REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive Wow – August, this means school starting back up soon. I know that some parents can’t wait for that to happen. Me, I’m not interested in rushing the season. I’m not a big fan of the 90degree weather, but I hate for the race season to end. The SCCA race season just got started in Watkins Glen in July. The Glen Double National race was the first race weekend of the year. The attendance at this year’s double was down from last year; I feel a consequence of two double national races this year. This is the first three-day race weekend I have been a part of and I can tell you, that third day adds a lot of more work, for everyone. Registration opened on Wednesday and it seems like we were open until Sunday night. Overall the event went well and I think everyone had a good time. The meals both nights and the three lunches were great and I received many thanks from drivers and workers. I would like to thank everyone for their help in making the event as good as it was. The first regional of the year is over as well, and the Fun One is right around the corner. We went to MotorSportReg. com for our registration this year and it has been a learning experience for both the drivers and the registrars. I keep finding out new things about the website, even a couple of weeks after the race. Hopefully the Fun One will be a little easier. The nominating committee is getting put together right now and if they call you please think of saying yes. It’s important that the board of directors has some representation of all programs; 4
unfortunately we currently have little or no representation from solo or rally, so please think twice about getting involved. This has been a busy week and I’m afraid that I don’t have as much time to work on this column as I would hope. So until next month…. Mike
Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes July 12, 2011 Location: Burgundy Basin Inn, 1361 Marsh Road, Pittsford, New York 14534 Regional Executive Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:09 p.m. The June general membership meeting minutes were approved on a motion by Meridith Croucher, seconded by Dean Croucher.
New Business Helen Cerino passed away on July 8. A brick will be purchased at the Watkins Glen Motor Racing Research Center. The purchase was approved on a motion by Bob Henderson, seconded by Dean Croucher. The purchase of a Motor Racing Research Center brick for region members who have passed was approved on a motion by Lynn Randall, seconded by Bob Henderson. Qualification is that the person should have been a region member for 35 years and to have held an office or received the region’s Outstanding Contribution Award. Two people have been named to the nominating committee, with two or three more needed. Lew Giesy and Rich Smith will represent the racing community. Representatives are needed from Solo and rally. Volunteers for nominations to the board positions are needed. Contact any member of the nominating committee. PROVIDING THE RACING COMMUNITY WITH INSURANCE AND DISABILITY INCOME FOR OVER 40 YEARS. August 2011
Race Report Glen National Race The race was a success with 254 drivers entered over the three days. Several competitors and workers commented that the event went well. The financial activity for the weekend is still underway. Hospitality for the event, which included three days of worker lunches and two end of day parties came in under budget. Thanks to Elizabeth Thiel for her efforts in arranging hospitality. On track incidents resulted in up to six hours of overtime at a cost of $2,700 per hour. The program was entertaining, with some inquiries about the Dog Show and Championship. Registration, Timing & Scoring, etc. specialty reports were given. Video was used to judge the starts, with the video being important in at least one occasion. Two Stewards of the Meet courts were available as a result of the large steward staff. Results were uploaded to MyLaps Monday. Links to MyLaps in Facebook were also made. The Official Results book was published and distributed.
RallyCross The RallyCross series is in need of helmets, cones and course maintenance equipment. The new helmets and cones will be used by Solo and the older ones passed along to the RallyCross series. It was felt that use on dirt would make them grungy and it would be better to keep the new ones clean. Rakes and shovels will be purchased for course maintenance. Solo Report Brian Buchman reported that we have had three Solos this season plus one out of region event. The upcoming event a Seneca Army Depot will be the middle of the season. Shaun Hallam and Bill Connors are chairing event number 4. Event number three at Rochester Institute of Technology on June 19 had 79 entries. Our Solo activities will be put up on Facebook. This should give us wider exposure than the current Yahoo site. NEDiv is sanctioning a Divisional Solo on July 30 and 31. Event #5 of the Finger Lakes Region’s Solo series will run in conjunction with this event. A chair is needed for the August 21 Solo, the seventh event of the series.
MotorsportReg.com was a learning experience with needs having been defined for the Fun One.
Treasurer’s Report Elizabeth Thiel reported on the status of the treasury.
Fun One Russell Jaslow reported that the budget has been approved. The sanction will be applied for on Wednesday.
Income from the Glen Double National is in the checking account. Several expenses from the event are yet to be paid.
Hospitality will feature the pig roast and worker lunches in the Media Center.
The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by Mike Brunner, seconded by Barb Lissow.
Rally Report The July, August and September rally meetings have been moved back a week to July 19, August 16 and Sept 20 respectively.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 p.m. on a motion by Mike Brunner, seconded by Elizabeth Thiel.
Summer RoadRally The July social rally will be rescheduled to a later date.

Bench Racing John Morris was reported as being in the hospital. Recovery is expected to take time. A card was passed around for Ken Buchel, a HP driver injured at the Glen Double National. A checkered flag for Gene Dinkel was passed around for signatures. Watkins Glen track rental is $17k per day, there is no reduction in rental fee during the week. One competitor entered two cars and ran the one that had the better qualifying time. Another blew the motor on his car and pulled the backup Exige out of the hauler. One national race license was renewed over the phone. The worker lunches at the Glen Double National were very good. Additional discussion, both before and after the meeting was not recorded.
Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes June 28, 2011 Location: Murph’s Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit, NY 14617 Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:42 p.m. Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Barbara Lissow, Activities Director; Dave Ciufo, Fran McAllister and Charles Tanck, Directors. Also present: Chris DeMinco, National Race Chair; Russell Jaslow, Regional Race Chair; Tony Zanni, RallyCross Chair; John Walsh, Area 10 Director and Dave Boyer, Caricaturist. 5
Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order. The minutes of the May 31, 2011, board of directors meeting were approved on a motion by Carl Dresie seconded by Barb Lissow. Activities Report The “Cruise Night” is on hold depending upon the health of family members. The September meeting has been moved to Sept 11 and will feature an “Old Driver’s” gathering. Fran McAllister and crew are working on details. Past members will be invited. Preliminary information is needed for the August issue of Top End; a flyer will be created for the September issue. New Business Dave Boyer presented the idea for using character drawings for race trophies. Cost is projected to be $130 per hour and can produce about 10 per hour. This can be done on an iPad 2. Other Business Mike Toombs reminded all that Chris and Mark McAllister can be contacted for merchandise and other club needs. Information on how to use social media needs to be presented to the region members. Race Report Glen Double National Race National race entries currently stand at 225. The STU class has been moved to Group 7. Facility needs were requested from the various specialties and will be sent to WGI be the end of the month. Trophies will be SCCA merchandise certificate and lap speed recognition. Things are under control. Fun One 2011 Russell Jaslow presented a budget for the Fun One based on 300 entries. Budget items were reviewed and changes from 2010 explained. The budget was approved on a motion by Dave Ciufo, seconded by Charles Tanck.

The Historic Race Group will have a separate session providing their car count is 20 or more. Rally Report The July social rally scheduled for July 16 will be rescheduled; the rallymaster has been out of town on business. The July rally meeting will be held on July 19. Promotion of the social rallies was discussed and several proposals made. (See the Rally meeting notes.) RallyCross Eight cars ran in the recent RallyCross at Perry’s Park.
cars. Low attendance may be due to school not being in session. Treasurer’s Report Elizabeth Thiel distributed copies of the Profit and Loss by Class statement through June 28. A SCCA merchandise bill for $1500 is not included in the statement. That needs to be sorted into the appropriate category. The Relay For Life Rally donation of $750 will be sent out before the end of the month. National race sanction/insurance and trophy bills have been paid. The recent Top End is not yet reported.
Tony Zanni presented a proposal to purchase “loaner” helmets and cones. They would go to Solo and the items being replaced used by RallyCross. The reason is that RallyCross use tends to be dusty and/or dirty. The proposal will be discussed with Brian Buchman. Tony would also like to purchase rakes and shovels to be used for course maintenance. Costs will be e-mailed to the board.
The tax return for 2010 has been completed and the taxes and preparation fees paid.
Solo Report The recent Solo at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) had 77

Special September Meeting By Fran McAllister
The region is planning a special meeting to honor drivers from the past who have helped to make the Finger Lakes Region and sports car racing what it is today. I am accumulating a list of current and former Finger Lakes Region drivers dating back to 1955 and I am impressed with how long the list is. We have also had some wellknown race drivers who have won national championships. Drivers such as Warren Agor, Bill Coykendall, and in more recent years Jerry Alaimo and the Dennis brothers. Expanding the list to RoadRally and Solo, it becomes even more impressive. The meeting will be held in September. The location and more details will be made available in the September issue of Top End. I am also looking for volunteers to help me contact as many of these past drivers as we can, to personally invite them to this event. If you know of anyone that should be invited, let me know. You can contact me at (585) 750-4674 or send an e-mail to jenright4@rochester.rr.com.
2012 Officers Nominating Committee A nominating committee is being formed to select a slate of candidates for the 2012 board of directors officers and directors. Consider contacting the committee or saying yes when you are called. A strong board of directors with representation from the racing, rally and Solo communities will insure the continued success of our region.

August 2011
What I Did for My 26 Years! By A well traveled Toyota Celica I arrived in Geneva on a cold winter’s day and was put out in the lot next to all of the other new cars. Man, if Geneva Toyota and all of the other Celica’s and Corolla’s knew what a great life I would get to lead they would all be jealous. Bob Henderson and his sales staff lined me up with a driver who belonged to the Sports Car Club of America and the BMW Car Club. Jim Dresser was a good owner who first introduced me to autocross and track days. Jim made a point in changing my oil on time and keeping me running at my peak performance. He drove me to the solo events in Webster and Henrietta and we both fought to win each and every time. Then came the track days at Watkins Glen, man running flat out on that prestigious track was awesome. I found that there was a big difference between autocrossing and running on tracks, at an autocross I didn’t have much time to think about was I was doing, on the gas, on the brakes and what felt like constant turning. On the track I could run to the red line in every gear chasing that high, how fast could Jim get me around that next corner? For years Jim and I would drive around the track lapping slower cars down the front straight (I’m sure I saw more than one jealous BMW during those runs around the track). But then things changed a little and Jim found he didn’t drive me as often as he would like, so he sold me to Craig Henry. Now Craig had other ideas of what he wanted to do with me and he worked with another Celica owner Paul Shaver and turned me into a street prepared solo car. This started a battle between me and Paul’s red Celica that lasted years and different owners. After all of the work Craig did I became stiff and sat closer to the road. I also shed some weight, getting rid of the useless air conditioning and the radio, who needs to listen to the radio when they can hear the sweet sound of my engine. I was so much fun running down close to the ground; you’d be amazed how fast Craig could get me around the corners with the stiff springs and it was so much

easier with the headers and the “not for on road use” catalytic converter. Those were some fun years. One year Craig towed me out to the Mecca of solo competition, the Solo II National Championships in Topeka, Kansas. The tow out was tough on me, to see nothing other than the back end of a Buick for the trip was not a lot of fun. But the racing was great; Craig was just short of winning a trophy with me! I felt like I let him down and the trip home was long and silent. Well Craig decided to move on and turned me into a daily driver. To say that driving to work every day in Rochester is not as much fun as racing is an understatement. The Rochester winters also started taking a toll on my paint and sheet metal, but I did as I was asked without complaints. After a couple of years Craig decided he wanted to see me racing again, even if it meant with someone else. So Craig took me to a solo event at RIT hoping to find someone willing to buy me. It was fun racing again, I didn’t care who bought me if I could just race again. So Mike Toombs bought me and put license plates on me, as long as he was going to take me racing I didn’t care if we drove on the street now and then. I think Mike found that I was a little to stiff to drive on the street much; he was having trouble missing those small holes that wouldn’t bother other cars. I was also having some problems with the tires Mike put on me – after the first year I was hoping he would go ahead and spend the money on getting me some sticky shoes. So the second year we started racing on some Hoosiers (man I love the stick of those tires). Mike took me all over the northeast, Boston a couple of times, and then he started taking me to Topeka. It was great to see all of my friends in Topeka; the only thing was that I was the only Celica running in F Street Prepared. I tried my best, but either Mike or I couldn’t put our best together to win that elusive trophy. One year I missed out when Mike and Todd Miller (the new owner of the Paul’s Celica) both raced that red Celica in Topeka, boy was I jealous when they took me off the trailer and put Red on. Red and I had become friends over the years, always competing against each other. Some years

I would win and others Red would pull it out. It was fun, but I became a little tired and some holes starting appearing in my armor. So Mike started thinking about moving on when Rich Smith offered him a ride in his Honda and Mike passed me on to Rich. Now Rich had other ideas for me and decided to take all of the race springs off and start driving me on the street. He took care of some of the rust problems I was having and gave me a slick new paint job. No more riding on a trailer for me. So Rich started driving me back and forth to work. Then when the winter came (a time when Mike would put me in the garage) Rich put some snow tires on me and went rallying. This rallying thing was something new that I hadn’t done before. It wasn’t racing, but it was still competition and I loved to battle with all of these new and those four wheel drive cars. Rich also took me to STPR and I was able to help work the rally. But wait, he and his friend Tony decided that I could run rally cross, racing again! Man was this tough, the dirt and mud would get everywhere and the bouncing was tough. This was a lot different racing than I had done before. Some parts started breaking, but I kept trying to be the best car out there. For three sessions I kept rallying in the winter and rally crossing in the summer. This past winter I tried helping with a rally in Pennsylvania but the snow was too deep and I couldn’t get my tires down to the road. Well the inevitable happened. This past STPR Rich took me down and I ran out of steam. My transmission just couldn’t take it anymore. It was heartbreaking to have to be towed back home to Rochester on a flatbed truck. For 26 years I was always able to finish under my own power, now I feel like I let Rich down. It has been a great life, I have done it all and couldn’t ask for anything more. Would I do it over again, hell yea! I’m going to miss the racing, but I know I always gave it my all. Maybe somebody can use some of my parts and I can go racing again, I haven’t raced a two mile oval yet! Thanks Mike Toombs for writing this down for me.

2011 KRYDERACING REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (updated) A couple of changes have occurred since the original of this sheet was issued this past spring. First of all, we are extremely pleased to announce the addition of a new track and event to the series. Finger Lakes Region has been a part of the series for several years with their Westward Ho event at Nelson Ledges Road Course. They are not holding that event this year. But they have requested adding their “Fun One Double Regional to the series. It is to be held September 17-18 at Watkins Glen. The updated schedule: Date May 28-29 July 2-3 July 30-31 August 21 September 17-18 October 29-30 November 19

Note: The May 28-29 and July 2-3 events are already history and points standings can be found at www.kryderacing.com. We are also on Facebook. 2011 marks the 29th Anniversary for the Kryderacing Regional Championship Series. The purpose of the series has always been to provide recognition to regional level SCCA racers while supporting facilities and SCCA Regions sanctioning them. Those goals remain unchanged for the 2011 season. The rules package will also remain basically unchanged and can also be found on the Kryderacing website. Points will still be awarded on a 9-6-4-3-2-1 basis with 1 extra point for each starting car beaten in class. While everyone will receive points, awards are only given to those competitors who participate in events put on by at least two of the sanctioning Regions. There is no fee to competitors to be eligible for the series. Everyone is automatically entered. However, we do appreciate those competitors who display the Kryderacing Regional Championship Series decals. Hoosier Tires, Carbotech Brakes, Sunoco Race Fuels, and Mazza Wineries continue their association with the series and awards will be given at the banquet. Check with us for any qualifications. We will also continue to honor workers and mechanics who contribute so much to these events. They are recognized at the banquet. Additional announcements for the upcoming season are also common fare during the banquet festivities. For additional information, go to www.kryderacing.com or call 330-854-4889. 12

Rally Tom Langdon Interim RoadRally Chair
Rally Meeting Notes June 26, 2011 96 Church Street, Victor, NY The following report is grouped by subject and may not be in chronological order. The follow six RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon and Tony Zanni Rally Meetings The July rally meeting has been moved from July 12 to July 19. The August meeting will be moved one week later to August 16. RallyCross Series One RallyCross clock has been fixed; a second needs to be fixed. Ben Gilmore will send the recent RallyCross results to Carl Dresie for publication in Top End. The course was in great shape. Two spots need to be smoothed due to ruts and/or roughness.
Summer Rallies Clean Out the Cobwebs, the first RoadRally in the Finger Lakes Region’s Summer Rally Series was cancelled. The July 16 rally will also be rescheduled. Work commitments have delayed creation of the rally. The July rally was planned as being similar to the winter series events. Open dates in September and October will be investigated for reschedule dates. The current event calendar will be sent to Tom Langdon and Rick Barnes. Promotion of Summer Rally Series events was discussed. In addition to Top End and flyers, possibilities include Finger Lakes Region social media as well as craigslist (http://rochester.craigslist.org/eee/), roclife.org (http://www.roclife.org/forums/ forumdisplay.php?52-Local-Motorsportsand-Racing-Events), Buffaloscooby (www. buffaloscooby.com) and others. Posting flyers at RIT and MCC is also a possibility. Promoting at the Solo and RallyCross events could also be done. Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally® The Celica has made it back from Pennsylvania. The transmission broke at the end of Stage 12, the last official use of the car. Winter Rally Series Rallymasters and RoadRally safety stewards are needed. Jerry Kerwin asked that zones with a “CAS all” not contain a checkpoint. That needs to be included in the rally safety check.
A proposal for the purchase of four helmets and about 20 cones will be presented to the Finger Lakes Region Board of Directors at the June 28 meeting. The new equipment will be used by Solo, with the replaced items going to the RallyCross event. Equipment used at a RallyCross can get dirty.
The requirements for a night RallyCross were discussed. Running an event with the Central New York region was discussed.
2011 August
It was noted that some links on the Finger Lakes Region website (http://www. flr-scca.com/) need to be update to the current year/version. There were no Subaru’s driven to the meeting. Church street is being redone and currently would require a “non-car busting” CAS of less than 20 mph. The September general membership meeting will be a “Long Term Member” meeting. The various cars in one member’s collection were discussed. The question is, “Are SCCA members more inclined to have more cars than the average citizen?” Workplace dress codes and the effect of pigments, dyes and other chemicals were discussed. An “oft heard” statement at the meeting was, “Back on topic.” Other discussions are not reported to protect the participants.
At Doyle Chevrolet Subaru, your Webster Chevrolet dealer and Rochester Chevrolet dealership resource, we’re looking forward to showing you our wonderful selection of Chevrolet cars, trucks, vans,
Paperwork for the rest of the RallyCross series will be filed within the next few weeks. Any change in dates should be given to Barb Lissow and Carl Dresie. Tony Zanni is on track to be licensed as a RallyCross safety steward. More licensed safety stewards are needed.
Miscellaneous Discussions Rick hosted a pre-meeting grilled hotdog feast with several different styles of dogs and sausage. Chips, dips, potables, cookies and brownies were also available. All were served outside next to the mulberry tree. This may be repeated, watch for a notice on the groups Yahoo site, (sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ FingerLakesRally/).
