REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive I thought I had better let you know that both of my computers are working better today. I was able to find an old keyboard so that I could get my desktop up and running in “Safe Mode” and then I could remove a patch and get the machine running again. So that is all that happened between last month and now. Wait there was a race that the region put on in Ohio in June. We once again resurrected Westward Ho! and we are hoping that we will break even. As I said last month we are giving a 10% discount at the Fun One this fall to anyone who entered Westward Ho! Marsha and I heard some crews talking about making the trip to Watkins Glen for the first time to run in the Fun One. So I think that we are going to find a bump in entry come September. I need to thank Lew and Wilma Giesy for all of the work they put into the race. We have changed the format the past couple of times we ran the event and assuming that we return next year I’m thinking that we should follow the same format we ran this year. The weekend before Westward, I and a quite a few region member made the trip to Ayer, MA for the Solo National Tour. This two day event was held at an old Army airbase northeast of Boston. We had a good time, but I keep hoping that I figure how to drive the car better. It was easy when I could blame the car, now I have trouble because I know the car is good and it’s only my driving to blame. So I keep going to events and keep trying to learn how to drive my car. I blew it; I was supposed to have the nominating committee together by the July 1. For some reason I always 4

have trouble remembering to do this on time. I know that this is important, because we have had to delay the vote a couple of years ago so that we could get the information out. So if someone calls you and asks you to run for office, please take the time and think about it. We currently have a racing centric board of directors and I would like to see more involvement from rally and solo competitors.

Race Report Westward Ho! – Lew Giesy The event went well with 87 cars entered on Saturday. There were four Miatas running in two classes and 14 total cars also running in the Enduro. It is expected that the event will be slightly less than break even.

Until next month, Mike

The weekend gave us some good ideas on the format to use in the future.

Activities Report – Mary Hartman Mary reported that pre-registration for the July 10 Membership Recognition Picnic is coming along, we expect 60 plus people. Adrienne Hughes and Roy Hopkins will give a presentation on Targa Newfoundland at the August 7 meeting. Bob Henderson will be talking about his boat trip from Geneva, NY to Florida at the September 4 meeting. Other Notes Lew noted that C.T. “Chuck” Gillens passed away last week. John Wolf of RCA also passed away last week. Race Report We have received a proposal from Deanna Flanagan in the national SCCA office to include the BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour in out 2013 Glen National. They want a time certain start. Mike will check with Deanna regards to what our advantage would be. Westward Ho! 2012 – Lew Giesy Except for a few problems that the drivers experienced we had a very good event. Financially we are close to break even. (Results are printed in the August issue of Top End. Ed.) There were 14 Formula First cars on track. They requested to have the qualifying race was converted to a second qualifying session at the request of the Formula First drivers. Lew stated that the format was successful. Fun One 2012 The competition board met prior to the board meeting and worked on defining race details such as scheduling and grouping. Elizabeth presented a draft covering part of the expenses in a budget based on the 2011 information. This should define if we need to cut expenses and where they can be cut. Controlling hospitality costs is a major concern. Awards, favors and program costs were not included in the draft budget. Entry levels are expected to be down. 5

The discount for the Westward Ho! entries needs to be handled by paying at the track and not through MotorsportReg. The race will be part of both the Kryder and NYSRRC series’. Disbursement of the driver donations to the worker fund was discussed. A random drawing to verified workers could be the best solution. Chris DeMinco will be race chair until the start of the weekend. Mike Toombs will assume the chair duties at that point. Rally Report Details for a social style destination rally are being worked on. Lynn Randall has ideas for the route. The goal is to get a wider range of region members involved in “fun” rallies. A Sunday at the end of September is the best possibility. Easy tulip style course following, paved roads, no checkpoints, questions regarding observations along the route, discount for “vintage” cars. Lew noted that STPR® had 45 of the 65 cars entered complete the rally. Solo Report The next Solo is scheduled for July 1. Mike needs to get keys made for the door of Solo van; it cannot be made on a standard machine. About twenty Finger Lakes Region members attended the recent National Solo. Sound levels were strictly enforced. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel The profit and loss by class statement for January 1 through June 26, 2012 was distributed for review. All but some of the bills for Westward Ho! were included in the statement. The deposit for Westward Ho! was included in the 2011 statement. The last Top End bill from FedEx of $828 and a SCCA printing bill of $13.24 also have yet to be entered in the P&L statement.

Not all income and refunds for Westward Ho! have been reported. The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by Dave, seconded by Carl. The meeting was adjourned at 9:33 p.m. on a motion by Dave, seconded by Chris. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary

TOP END on the internet. Internet or Hard Copy

You are reading this edition of the Finger Lakes region’s newsletter, Top End, on our website at http://www.flr-scca. com/topend/. This version differs from the hardcopy sent through the US Postal Service in several ways. The interior pages have color and there is more content. It contains less information only in that member street addresses, e-mail addresses and phone numbers are not included.

http://news.flr-scca.com Finger Lakes Region’s online news source

If you find that the hardcopy is not needed, you can send an e-mail to the editor at cfdresie@cs.com requesting that your name be taken off of the mailing list. This saves the region about $1.50 printing and postage per issue. (Some members find the printed issue more convenient to read and want to continue receiving the hardcopy.) A notice will be sent to all who have provided the national office with a valid e-mail address when an issue is available. It is also posted on facebook® and the news site. If you receive the printed version, be sure to check out the online version.

2013 Board of directors

The nominating committe is recruiting candidates for the 2013 board of directors. Because our region is made up of members involved in one or all of Club Racing, rallying and Solo, it is important that each of these areas be represented on the board. If called, consider helping guide or region through the next year.

Each of the region’s areas of interest need volunteers to do the jobs that let all of us enjoy our sport(s). Both on the front lines and in leadership positions. Look around and see who is doing what, what they are doing and find something that you would lke to try.

George joined the Finger Lakes Region in 1956, and Gene joined in 1959.Both have served as RE, and Assistant RE. Both have been members of the Board of Directors for multiple years. Both have served as editors of Top End. George was Comp. Board Chairman for nearly ten years. Gene has been chairman of both our National Race, and the Fun One several times. Well, you get the idea! No wonder that each of them has received the “Outstanding Contribution to the Region” award, the Region’s highest honor, in more than one year. George and Gene were also passionate race drivers. George has raced for a span of more than fifty years, and still owns most of the cars that he raced, including a Mercedes Benz 190SL that was his first race car! George was his own engineer, mechanic and preparer. He prepared his race cars HIS way, and he did it RIGHT, and it showed in his finishing record. Gene raced a Pinto and a Buick for several years, and was also a “collector.” He only recently sold his Buick race car. Gene was a P.R. and advertizing person by trade. He brought those skills to the Region in his race events, by writing about them and our members.

George was honored last September by induction into the Watkins Glen Drivers’ Walk of Fame for his long and distinguished career of racing at the Glen. We are fortunate that both George and Gene are with us this evening. You guys have been a very meaningful part of the heart and soul and success of the Finger Lakes Region for over fifty years. THANK YOU! We will always treasure your friendshop and contributions to Finger Lakes Region.

Bill Coykendall FLR National Road Racing Champion 45 year member. Bill joined FLR in 1967, he owned an MGB, using it to compete in gymkhanas (ask the solo driver what this was!). He ran with mild success against competitors such as Dave Elder. The next year he bought an old tired Bug Eye Sprite, and ran dirt track events at the fairgrounds. These were fun events, and Bill never planned on going on much further with competitive driving. His next vehicle to enter the picture was a Z28 Camaro; He did well in this car, but never did beat a guy named Red Kozinski. Bill finally decided to go racing, and being wise, he rented a car from Barry Budlong, a Datsun 510, for his driver school. Bill said that the school was a revelation of many things to him. Quoting Bill, “This was not just about how to drive, but also a lot about your own psyche which you might not have been aware.” As it turned out, Bill could go no further in his schooling process, as Lou Gigliotti was going to qualify for the Runoffs at Road Atlanta in it. Ultimately Lou did qualify and went to the national runoffs in it. At the end of the season, Bill purchased that car and took it to his second driver school at Summit Point. 10

Then, the race team of “Chiropractic on the Move” began. His first volunteer crew member was Roger Meredith, and then Mike Plain offered his help, followed by Jim McBride, and Lyn Wechsler. Not everyone starts out with a crew consisting of an RE, and member of the BOD, and the regional Flag Marshal. They registered the first win at Nelson Ledges, followed by two wins at the Glen 100. In 1975, Showroom stock became a national class. All in all, with six races in nine weeks, three engine changes, on set of rings, and a lot of education, Bill became received his National Competition License. In July of 1976, Bill won his first national race, in a very appropriate place, Watkins Glen. After that, he burst on the national scene like a July firecracker. Bill’s wife Missy joined FLR in 1975, and took to the racing life with great grace. She and four kids travelled to all the races in their motor home, packing and unpacking, making meals, and doing laundry each week for the whole racing season. Between weekends, Bill also had an active Chiropractic office in Greece, hence the name of the place that paid the racing expenses. Before this driving bug struck, Bill was Chief of Race Communications Association, of which he is very proud. RCA gave Bill a connection to motor racing the few drivers have. He met and dealt with some of the most prestigious names in the racing world. Bill was also FLR Flag Marshal until he began racing. Bill continued to race throughout the late 70s, competing with, and beating such well known racers as Rob Dyson, Bob Leitzenger, and Paul (PL) Newman. On his first trip to the Runoffs, he came in second in his class, only beaten by Elliott Forbes Robinson. The following year, he took first, making him a one of only four National Champions that FLR has produced. Needless to say, He won the Rookie Driver of the year trophy in 1975, Most Improved Driver in 1970, and in 1980, won FLR Driver of the Year.

Tom Palmer “As I moved from my first car, a ‘41 Ford ($50 barn find), to a ‘52 Chevy (with a Buick V8 engine), and then, at age 20 to a sharp used ‘60 Austin Healey 3000 roadster (I was making $1.55/hr. at the time)...I gain a love of “sports cars.” I don’t know how I head of SCCA, but I found FLR at the old Colonial Hotel in 1967 and joined. There were less than 100 members back then; most owning some form of imported fun car, and about 70 or so would show up every month for meetings. Great meetings, and a great bunch of people...they rallied, raced, crewed and worked. Cars and car talk was the focus. And maybe a little beer. Stuffed a Ford 289 V8 into my Healey, a very fun car to drive. Then I decided to go to Driver School. At the time I was owner of “Ol Yeller VII”... not really the correct car for a novice. High horsepower Corvette F1 engine in a lightweight car. It had been stored for quite a while...finally got it running the night before the event and actually moving (after we unfroze the clutch). Hit the track with no idea about the car’s handling or braking. With the same tires it had been sitting on for years...they had the grip of polished concrete! Proud to have been one of the founding STPR Pro Rally members, along with Bob Henderson, Bill Leathersich, John Robinson and others. We had to take multiple trips to Wellsboro just to convince the local authorities that we weren’t the Hell’s angels of the automobile world. With apology, I was pretty active in FLR until I found another interest... The National Warplane Museum. Got to spend many hours working of the WW2 warbirds. After having the controls of our B17 handed to me for an hour one day, I caught the flying bug and went on to get my pilot’s permit. I was Flight Line Chief of the “Wings of Eagles” Air Show for quite a few years...one of the best warbird air shows in the country at the time. Good fortune of hooking up with Rochester’s own Bob Tullius each year he and Brian with show up with 3 planes. Bob’s planes are as clean as his Group 44 cars, especially his P51 Mustang.

Hey..maybe I should become a little more active again... Thank you..

Wayne Scheible 45 year member Wayne’s name first appeared in John Castle’s history of the Finger Lakes Region as winning a combined rally with Triumph Club. He and his wife Pat were well known rallyists in the 1960s and 1970s, when the club ran a rally a month. He was chief of controls for an FLR Divisional Rally held in 1968. In 1969, he and Pat won the best rally driver and navigator award from the Region. Wayne served as Activities Director in 1970. He was chairman of an ice cross on Honeoye Lake in conjunction with the Honeoye Winter Carnival. He also autocrossed in the 1970s, running in E stock. During this time, their son Karl was taken along on rallies, and was allowed to work checkpoints when he was old enough to do so. Karl, with good rally genes, went on to Pro Rally, and won the US Group N champion and the Overall North American Rally Champion. Karl drove the “Cute Car” beetle in Pro Rally in early 90s, which was a factory ride for VW, which made Karl a TV star! Karl said his greatest thrill was when he and Dad Wayne competed in, and took third overall in the Pro Rally, “Rim of the World.”

Forty Years Ago in FLR 1972 Olgerts Sneidze was RE, and Tom Palmer was Activities Director. Bill Coykendall was Chief of Flagging and Communication. Wayne Scheible won first in a regional rally named “Matchbox Rally”. John Castle was Chair of the Fun One which saw 162 entries, with a Saturday evening party in the basement of Seneca Lodge. Racing had become the major focus of the

region, while participation in rally and autocross was way down. The region had only one autocross this year, and the rally program gave out no awards, due to lack of interest. Two young men arrived on the scene, helping the region turn its focus around again. These people were Chris Bucknam and Lyn Wechsler.

Chris Bucknam 40 year member Chris joined Finger Lakes in 1972, with an interest mainly in autocross. Throughout the years, he has been first in High Points in 1978, when he won first in C Prod autocrossing. He served as Activities Director in 1978 and 1979. In 1982, Chris was awarded the Region’s Alex Lafontant Trophy, for Outstanding Contribution to the Region. In 1978, he also was the NEDiv champion in DPrep. In 1980, with his varied interests, was Race Chair of the FLR National at Watkins Glen. Chris was Assistant RE in 1982, and became RE in 1983. In 2005, he was again Asst. RE. Chris’ major contribution however, was getting the solo program back on its feet, after, due to lack of interest in 1976. At that time, both the rally and solo programs were in danger of going under. Chris wrote a Top End article explaining what fun it was to Solo, which was a good part of the resurgence of interest in that aspect of the club. Somewhere along the line, Chris met his lovely wife, Joyce, and they produced a son, Jake who is taking after his father in the solo program. This is another FLR family of whom the region is proud.

Lyn Wechsler 40 year member Lyn, as mentioned before was a crew member for Dr. Bill. He was also instrumental in letting our Race

Physician, at the National Race in 1978, Dr. Pat Newman, meet her idol, the actor of the same name. She was chief of neurology at Upstate Medical in Syracuse, and had agreed to be our physician for free, if only she could meet PL. I thought for quite a while to see how could make this come about, and finally decided to just go over to where their cars were gridded. Lyn was standing against Bill’s car, and I shouted loud enough for PL to hear, “Lyn, I want you to meet our track doc, PL Newman (. I was not lying, as her name was Patricia Louise.) Lyn turned around, as did the driver of the car next to theirs, yes, and the famed actor/driver. Paul came over and asked if that was really her name, and she assured him that it was. PL allowed a picture to be taken with the other PL Newman, which I imagine is still on her desk in Syracuse. Lyn was my first station captain at the Fun One of 1974. I had been prodded into flagging the event as most of the usual flaggers had come down with pneumonia after the October Grand Prix. Fun One races were in October back then, and there always was a problem getting flaggers. He was a good teacher, as I continued on to get my National F and C. license. A perk of being on station with Lyn was getting a ride in his yellow Lotus Europa. Lyn was Assistant RE in 1975 and RE in 1976 and 1977. He continued to be a crew member for Dr. Bill, and was awarded the Mechanic of the Year award in 1984. Lyn has maintained his membership in FLR, but divides his time between Rochester and California. He has continued his interest in Finger Lakes Region for forty years. 35 year members Lew and Wilma Giesy and Alf Zeller along with 30 year members Michael Cianciosi and Judy Schoonmaker will be printed in the September issue of Top End. Rally Tom Langdon Interim Rally Chair

Rally Meeting Notes July 17, 2012 96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order. The following seven RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon, Mike Toombs and Tony Zanni. The Yahoo calendar function has been changed and the procedure for notification needs to be reviewed. Adrienne Hughes and Roy Hopkins will present a program on the Targa Newfoundland rally at the August 7 general membership meeting. The September general membership meeting will be held on the 4th, with Bob Henderson presenting a program on the boat trip from Geneva, NY to Florida. An “Old Driver’s social gathering has been scheduled for September 11. This pushes the September Rally meeting back to the 18th. Carl passed around the calendar as it currently stands. The rally to benefit Lollypop Farms running on October 13 will be put on the Finger Lakes Region’s calendar. This is not an SCCA event.

from as far away as Wellsboro and Central NY. There were 18 competitors. (The results are printed in the August issue of Top End. Ed.) Lunch was available for $5 for both competitors and spectators. Tom asked that the hometowns of the RallyCross competitors be listed in the results. This helps to show the area from which we are drawing people. Paperwork covering the cost of Perry’s Park field repair has been sent to Elizabeth Thiel. Dirt has been spread around in the pit area, more course work is needed. Jim Perrin has scheduled a barbeque at Letchworth State Park after the next RallyCross at Perry’s Park. The championship points system for the RallyCross series will be that used in New England. The national SCCA class system will not be used. Two wheel stock and two wheel open classes will be part of the points system. A computer capable of running the scoring system is needed. Tony needs contact information for the Warsaw Airpark. When can a RallyCross be scheduled at that site? The November RallyCross will be scheduled for the 17th. Summer Rally Series The destination rally has been scheduled for September 30. It will run from Canandaigua to the Glenn A Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport. Lynn Randall will be doing the route. It will be a paved road route with no checkpoints. Scoring would be based on answers to questions on items seen along the route. Special interest cars would be given consideration. Rick will be writing a “social” rally to be run October 14.

Applying for sanctions early will get the events on the national site and in SportsCar.

Winter Rally Series Winter Series for 2013 dates need to be set.

Tony has volunteered to be on the nominating committee. Rallu interest is needed on the Finger Lakes Region board of directors.

Jerry passed around an example of a trophy plaque on which small plaques could be applied for each event where a trophy is won.

RallyCross Series Tony will contact Elizabeth Thiel regards payment for helmets to be traded with Solo for their used loaner helmets.

RallyCross Season’s off to a great start. By Victor Prinzim

This year’s RallyCross season is off to a great start, albeit a rough one course wise. Eighteen drivers signed up to compete on June 30th, even a few with fully prepped rally cars. The stage was set for a good competition. First we had to figure out a good way around the beat up field. Last February’s RallyCross did a good job of rutting up the field something fierce. Lucky for us the Old MacDonald, who mows the field helped us out by grinding down and smoothing out the really bad spots. After a few minor changes to the course were tested in Tony Zanni’s 2008 Rally Civic, our safety steward Chris Thompson gave us the green light. I don’t remember who was in what run group, but highlights and lowlights include Andy Walker telling Jim Perrin, “If I just go faster I should be able to pitch it right around that last corner!” Let’s just say that didn’t quicken his lap times very much as he bent the control arm and several other suspension parts on the rear of his Green Subaru Impreza 2.2, aptly named “Grasshopper”. The other lowlight was a red flag thrown when Pat Smith, who can’t be named in this article because he was home sick from work that day, almost rolled his new whip, a beautiful Subaru Forester XT. An unfortunate rut caught a

June 2012

tire and sent Smith up on 2 wheels but his ninja driving skills saved it. I don’t think the same can be said for his pants though. Jeremy Keck could recite every one of his lap times to you at any given moment, as well as any childhood memories from Wellsboro PA. Keck is a padowon learner under the Tony Esposito Pizza Parlor Rally Team. Jeremy drove up from Wellsboro along with fellow Wellsboroian, Brandon West from All Wheels Driven. Keck fought back and forth for FTD in his Subaru Impreza 2.2 with Dave Potocki who may or may not have been driving Jim Perrin’s new wagon of doom. Potocki ended up winning the event with smooth fast and dusty runs all day. West on the other hand won the “I drove the biggest truck” to the event award. He drove his “slo-buru” Impreza 2.5 well but couldn’t keep up with the speedy Keck or Potocki, and ended up 13th overall. There is a quickly growing list of fully prepped rally cars showing up at these event’s Tony Zanni, Jim Perrin, and Eric Winters all showed up with 2WD beasts caged and ready for battle. Out of the group the Yellow wCRX, that Rich Smith built, Zanni drove took the win in the open class, after he discovered Perrin had added an extra run in the scoring sheet. The wCRX

also held up the best, as Winters lost a front bumper, and Perrin blew out a shock only weeks before he was headed to the New England Forest Rally. Thankfully He got it back together in time to go play in Maine. Only 2 tenths of a second separated Zanni from Perrin in the end, First and Second place in Open Class respectively. Other notables, Mike Woodruff showed up with the most bas ass looking car of the day an old 280 Z painted flat black with Hella rally lights bolted all over it. Woodruff ended up first place in 2WD class and 4th overall. Garrison Mosley came over for a few runs from the CNY RallyCross Series and drove well, placing 3rd in Open and 9th overall. Ben Gilmore’s Neon is still driving well, although Ben didn’t drive as well as he has in the past, we’ll give him some slack since he’s trying to get a new RallyCross course ready at his place, 2nd in 2wd and 15th overall. Ryan Kolupa and Sean Heavens had some fire in their bellies driving the only WRX’s in the field. They both had to put up with Zanni’s taunts on the internet about how he was going to beat them in a 2WD wCRX. They both put up good times, Kolupa ended up 4th in open and 11th over all and Heavens right behind him.

Your top five over all looked like this, 1st - Dave Potocki – U4, 2nd - Garick Tischler- U4, 3rd, Jeremy Keck - U4 , 4th - Mike Woodruff - 2WD 5th – Tony Zanni – Open. First in O4 was Andre Skandar in a Subaru Impreza 2.5 and first in soiling his pants Pat Smith. Pat we kid because we care. We’re all happy he brought an extra pair of shorts, and look forward to seeing him next month. All in all, minus a minor course adjustment due to the dust, it was a great afternoon of sliding sideways in the dirt at Perry’s Park. Thanks everyone for coming out we know we left a few of you out but we appreciate all the support and look forward to next month’s RallyCross on July 28th. Also a huge thank you to Bruce Perry, for letting us look at his new to him Lotus and driving the tractor to move the dirt to fix the pit area. And a Huge THANK YOU to all the participants who stuck around and helped rake shovel and otherwise smooth out the pit area we destroyed in February. We’re always looking for volunteers for RallyCross Chairs, and safety stewards, and timing help. Contact Tony Zanni for more details, rallycross@flr-scca.com or 585281-2510. See you on the 28th!

Race Fran McAllister Competition Board Chair

A New Shoe is Baptized By Jim Tyo

So, I went to a general meeting and shot my mouth off about the lack of racing content in Top End. After I got done yakking I felt like an idiot, so then I said I would write an article. I’m already more than a month behind on my promise and I have changed the topic of the article to something I have firsthand info about, A new racer is baptized during May Madness at the Glen on May 26- 27, 2012. Well, the first race of the year is always an extra challenge for a procrastinating fool like me. The question is not will there be a problem, it’s what will the problems be? So we investigate the timeline of a race weekend with Hail Mary Racing. The fresh greasy paw prints all over the lower side of the Winnebago is how our story begins. What happens when you don’t de-winterize your 28- year-old RV and test it out until the day before you need to leave for the track—A LOT. Water leaks, brake lines that blow out, first repair that doesn’t hold, auto parts stores that don’t have the fitting you need and a big brother that asks you, “Tell me why we PAY to do this?” referring to Club Racing. The plan was to pull out on Friday at 2:30 p.m., yet three hours later and two attempts at a repair with products that would not hold the pressure we had 20

a rumbling MINIWINNE with brakes. We thought we were being smart and had the car loaded on the trailer, and all the tires and tools loaded in the truck the night before. However, the tools we needed for the repair were in those boxes packed nice and tight in the back of the truck, of course. So we had to unhook the trailer, unpack the truck, use the tools, repack the truck and reconnect the trailer. We waited to plug the trailer lights in until we were 10 miles down the road, just for giggles. Now I get to tell you about the real story here; my son Chris is going to be the primary “shoe” for Hail Mary Racing this year. I get to spend all the money and he gets to have all the fun. This will be Chris’ first race after getting signed off at drivers’ school last October when he got to mix it up with Dan Glueck and some other fast Sport Racers. He is determined to do everything better than me, but I forgot to tell him not to do everything that I do, like hitting the wall. I left my mark at New Hampshire and he just had to top it; more on that to come. Saturday morning, plenty of coffee on the stove, all the pre-race checks are going well, and all is good. We got our call to the grid and Chris rolled out for the first qualifying session. Everything is running like clockwork, however I am uneasy about the set-up in the car. I tried to predict a set-up for Chris’ weight difference in a car that was completely dismantled over the winter and I was second guessing myself. The session went well with Chris turning some good lap times. We signaled him to pit halfway through the session to get tire temps. The wear pattern on the tires told me I was too aggressive on the rear camber. We made a half turn adjustment on the rear camber links and sent him back out. His lap times got a little better. Suddenly I noticed the flag tower was showing the yellow and checkered flags. OK, the session is over but why the yellow?

TOP END

The wall! Apparently Chris failed to predict his rate of closure on a Formula V going into the Bus Stop and had to check up drastically which upset the car resulting in a spin with the help of the grass and didn’t end well at the tire wall. Chris drove the car back to the pits on three wheels, with the right rear radius arms and lower A-arm all twisted up. Now the clock was ticking. Can we get this thing repaired in time for the afternoon race or is tomorrow's qualifying session the best we can do? I pondered. We needed both a Plan A and Plan B. I had some of the parts I needed with us but I didn’t have a radius arm or heim joints. The old, ugly spares I had were back in the garage in Rochester. They are so ugly I don’t let them out in public. There is also a collection of used heim joints sitting next to them. Of course the ones that are all twisted up on the car were brand new. Plan A: Crew member Brett ("I will do anything") from the Great North jumps in his Jeep and heads for Rochester; or, Plan B: see what we can find at the track or in town. We need to implement both plans simultaneously and see where we end up. Ready, Set, GO! We came up empty at the track with fellow Formula Ford racers so Chris headed into town looking for a welding shop and ended up at the garage I had been telling him about since he was in diapers, Smalley’s Garage. The calm fellow behind the desk looked at the twisted up radius arm Chris was holding, chuckled and said, "I've seen a few of these in my time." It was our good fortune they had a solid piece of round stock lying around the shop that fit the inside diameter of the radius arm perfectly. Chop, chop, weld, weld and a very small fee and we had a functional radius arm, ugly as sin, but functional. Thank you Smalley’s. Now Chris has had a race day saved by the legendary Smalley’s Garage. He is an official racer now.

June 2012

So now it’s back to the track to start panhandling around the garage for a correct size and thread heim joint. It took a few tries but we found one. We had a spare lower A-arm and bearing and a CV joint with us. We put it all together, applied a “high tech” eyeball alignment and we were ready to go with three or four minutes to spare. Chris was pulling out to go to the grid as Brett pulled up from his round trip to Rochester and back. Brett would have been justified in being grumpy about the whole situation but he just smiled, grabbed the tire pressure gage, clipboard and stopwatch and jogged over to the grid. (We had to give him extra beers that night.) Chris had a good qualifying time despite the off- course visit to the tire wall so he lined up in his assigned spot and rolled off the grid. The car ran great and Chris drove a nice race. But Sunday would prove to be even better. After hitting the scales there were a lot of smiles and tired out banter among the drivers. It was a good race. When Dan Glueck released the race group from impound our next problem stated to show up. The starter would not crank the engine. I figure we just had a low battery. Brett and Chris pushed the car back to our garage area (there’s that Brett again) and we put the battery on the charger and everything seemed okay. Sunday morning was another goodlooking day for racing. As usual our beloved support team Lucinda, Joanne and Kathy had the coffee brewing and were trying to make everyone eat. Phil and Brett were busy going through the pre-race checklist. Chris was practicing

looking good in a fire suit and being a “hired shoe” (check out those sunglasses) while I was trying to get used to the idea of not being in the car. We negotiated a new contract. I would double what I paid him to drive the car and he would triple what he paid me for race prep and track support; big-time business at HMR! With the sun shining and the car in one piece, we checked the battery and the starter and everything looked good as we put some morning heat into the engine. The pre-race checklist went smooth, yet there is something about the set-up still bothering me but I wasn't sure why. Just before Chris rolled to the grid, I decided to make some last minute changes including lowering the tire pressure in the front by a pound and take another full turn out of the camber links on both back wheels. Chris was careful but fast in qualifying. He grabbed a good starting position but didn’t want to break anything this time. Ha ha, guess what? A marshal had all the cars stopped behind the pit wall as they came off the track to explain a situation that had happened in Saturday’s race. When they were done and Chris tried to fire the car, the starter would not crank again. We bump started the car and it fired up easy so it seemed as if the problem was not the battery. Chris drove the car back to our garage area and we got it up on stands and ran electrical checks from front to back. The problem was in the starter so I gave Brett a little lesson in removing something that has bolts that you can’t see or touch. With the starter out we run some crude “redneck” checks with jumper cables. The problem was

actually in the starter motor itself and not the solenoid. So began the begging and panhandling once again around the garage area. We found a similar starter, but no matter how we tried to index the mounting it would not work on our car. No new starter, so we needed yet another new plan. It's time to talk to the grid marshal. We needed to bump start the car away from the grid between the five- and oneminute signals and roll through the grid to take our starting position as the grid rolls out. The grid marshal agreed. I thought to myself, "everything should be fine as long as Chris doesn’t stall the engine, if he does, we are done." The race was great. I was both envious and proud standing on the pit wall. Chris had a fantastic dog fight with two other Club Fords and a newer Formula Ford. They were swapping positions back and forth through the entire race. The close racing was evident from the gouge out of the brand new nose cone on the car. I wanted to be in the seat but also wanted to let everyone know "that’s my son!" After a lot of high fives and smiles and drivers talking with their hands in impound, it was time to put the car on the trailer and kill a couple of beers. So a new “shoe” was born at Hail Mary Racing and he got a baptism by fire in the events of a typical race weekend. (Does this make anyone really question the Glen Region’s name of“May Madness” as the name of this, the first SCCA race of the season at Watkins Glen? Ed.)
