REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive The end of the year is just around the corner. We have completed a very full season – three road races, eight Solo events, seven Road Rallies, six RallyCrosses, one Street Survival School and one Solo National Tour event: like I said, a very full season. There is one general membership meeting left, then the banquet in January, and the year will be complete for the Finger Lakes Region. So planning for next year is in full swing. Next year we are planning on running two races, eight Solo events, seven Road Rallies, six RallyCrosses, divisional Mini-convention, one Street Survival School and one Solo National Tour event. So next year looks like it is going to be as busy as the past year. In order to do this we need your help! Please think about talking to the event chairs and ask them how you can help out. The 2009 NEDiv Mini-convention was the first weekend in November in Pittsburgh, PA. It was an interesting meeting to say the least. The race schedule was a fascinating document when I got to the scheduling meeting. There were six double National Races on the schedule. The only National that wasn’t a double was the one at Lime Rock Park. Well, the Friday night meeting ended with the same list of events on the schedule, nothing was decided. The seminars on Saturday were very informative and I learned something at all of the meetings. One important item for NYSRRC drivers, there is going to be a change in the way reserved numbers are allocated starting next year; you’ll hear more about that next month. 4
The Sunday NEDiv Council meeting was quite exciting or should I say some of it was. The outcome - after much discussion - was that each double National had to be voted on independently, and if five regions voted against the event then it couldn’t be held. After it was all done, each double was voted down, even Pocono. I wouldn’t be surprised if next spring there may be some more discussion, but right now there are no double National Races scheduled for next year. I also heard that the Trans-AM series is going to continue next year. The race series is going to be taken over by SCCA Pro Racing and will become a part of other Pro weekends. They may run during a couple of club races, but most of their races will be during other Pro events. They will not run as part of the Glen National weekend. We made it work this year, but I can tell the Glen Region that they should be happy that they won’t have to worry about it next year. I mentioned the year-end banquet earlier; it is on the schedule for January 9. There is a flier in Top End and on the Web site with all of the important details. Marsha and I have been going to the banquet for quite awhile now and it is always a good time. It’s always fun to see how some people clean up. So I hope to see you there! Until next month… Mike

Rally Tom and Deb Langdon Road Rally Chairs
Rally Meeting Notes November 10, 2009 96 Church Street, Victor, NY Nine RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present. The rally group received a request from the 2010 Mini-Con chairs to provide a list of seminars and meetings. Possible subjects include a Town Hall meeting, safety steward training, etc. The last RallyCross event of the season is scheduled for November 14. Jim Perrin will be chairing this event. The Winter Series training rally is scheduled for Sunday December 6. The rally format will be an abbreviated winter rally style starting with calculations included and transitioning to the traditional instructions. Workers for five or six checkpoints and scoring are needed.
and February 20, Tom Langdon and Karl Haltiner as Rallymasters; March 6, Rallymaster Curtis Braun with Ben Gilmore. Tom and Karl need to decide which will do the February events. The general instructions will be an update of those used last year. Noise levels need to be reduced. Curtis Braun will review the 2009 series data to determine start order for the 2010 events.
The RoadRally and RallyCross Holiday and Awards Party will be on Saturday December 12. Information is available on the Web site and in TOP END. Mugs and pitchers are possible season trophies.
Manetti’s Restaurant in Canandaigua is closed. Recent rally headquarters have been the Yard Of Ale in Piffard and Cheap Charlie’s in Bloomfield. Other venues and their use need to be found. The Winter Rally Series trophies will be dash plaques.
The Winter Series will consist of five events: January 2, Alan Smith as Rallymaster; January 23, Gary Thomas as tentative Rallymaster; February 6
Rallymasters are asked to provide an article reporting on their rally. If no article is written a list of workers must be provided. Results should be sent to the
Top End editor and to the Webmaster. Jason Light will not be able to attend all of the RallyCross events during the 2010 season. He will handle some of the paperwork. RallyCross classing is being revised for next year. The over/under split for naturally aspirated engines will be raised. Stone needs to be added around the leach field and at a spot near the trees at Perry’s Park. An entry level of around twenty seems optimum. Tom Langdon will send the non-working clocks out for repair. Jason Light reported that the recent Glen Region RallyCross event went well. The course was short, smooth and well maintained. There was a large turnout for this event.

Targa 2009
(A Lesson in Racer’s Luck) Mark Laitenberger Navigator, Car 811 2009 was the third year I had a chance to compete in Targa Newfoundland, and as we all know, half of the trophy is the stories you bring home. Sometimes that is the only trophy, but those are usually the better stories. For those who are unfamiliar with this event, let me explain what Targa is and how it works. Targa Newfoundland is a six-day event, with one day of qualifying and five days of competitive auto racing. The first day, “Prologue,”
14
consists two stages whose times are used to assign the start order for the rally on Monday morning. Unlike Pro Rally, in Targa they start the slowest car first and the fastest cars last. This keeps the group together and provides an opportunity— or challenge—to pass cars on the longer stages. Every night they assign a new start order for the next morning based on the current times. Every car is assigned a class based on its age and then further categorized into Stock or Modified as well as Small or Large based on the engine size. This year I navigated for Afshin Montazeri in a Nissan Pulsar AWD. Afshin ran this same car last year and had an issue on the last stage of the last day, but with a new coat of paint and some other parts it was ready to run again. This car was never sold new in North America and had to be brought in from Japan as a right-hand drive. This was changed to a left-hand drive (probably when the
roll cage was put in), but the original instrument cluster was still on my side as well as a Terratrip rally computer. A new set of gauges (speed, tach) was mounted for Afshin, as well as some we could both keep an eye on to make sure the car was happy. Sunday had two short stages early in the day and a Special Stage later. The first stage was an open, flowing stage with a short sprint through a small town. We ran this stage twice before moving on to the Special Stage. New to Targa this year was a 2½- to 3-mile stage around a government facility on one of the major streets in the area. This included a run down a four-lane divided main street and a race up into the front parking lot followed by two back-to-back hairpin turns to bring us back onto the main street. A few more turns brought us into the finish. This would be similar to the spectator stage at the fairgrounds for STPR if it were paved and run twice
December 2009
including the jump. Frank Sprongl thought the jump was a good place to pass another competitor; I’m sure it looked great to the very large group of spectators on the lawn. We were supposed to run this stage twice for times then could take as many runs as we wanted for practice. Our extra runs were cut short by a blown radiator hose, and with service in the same parking lot as the start line this seemed the best place to have it fail. Monday brought some rain in the morning, which moved on by the second stage allowing the roads to dry out. Just before the morning break on the second stage we caught the car that had started in front of us, about two-thirds into the stage. They had missed a turn due to the still wet roads, and were having a bit of trouble getting back into the groove. Unfortunately, they slowed down and we were unable to pass (narrow roads) until we were in sight of the finish line. I didn’t even see the timing line as we rocketed past it and manage to make our time. Racer’s Luck. We ended the day with a total of 5 points (seconds late) for the day, good enough to put us in a tie for 16th place overall and first in Group 8. With the next Group 8 car only 11 points behind us, this was going to be a tough week. Tuesday brought a cold start to the day, but without the rain this seemed like a good sign. The first three stages were pretty short—2.8 km, 7.8 km, and 7.8 km—and were very fast, with few major turns and a smooth surface to keep the car on the road. This led into my favorite stage of the day if not the entire week. The Port Leamington stage is 28.5 km long with some instructions 3–4 km apart. That is not to say that it is a straight run. If they put every turn into the route book, this stage would take about half the book! Because of quite a few elevation changes, a lot of the turns can be seen with enough distance to slow down if you need to. The 27 or so turns in the book are usually a “Crest into …” so you don’t see it coming. There are a few stretches to pick up some time but not enough to allow you to relax. The stage ends in the town of Leading Tickles, one of the most scenic areas you can imagine. The run back out had to be transited due to a breakdown in the radio communications between the start and finish. Driving at the posted speed limit took about three times longer than racing in. We managed to finish the day with only 48 points (seconds) in penalties for the day, 30 on the last stage in the town of Gander on a 6.9 km stage with most turns 0.20 km apart and only one straight section, of 0.50 km. This is a stage that you find yourself constantly setting up for the next turn while you are still trying to get the car under control from the previous corner. It ends in the parking lot of the arena that we will be in that night and the following night. Because the stage runs down the street next to the arena,

Afshin and I were able to park the car and run through a neighbor’s yard to watch the last five or six cars run that section. The driveway we were standing in was about the braking point for us to make the next turn, but seeing the faster cars of Steve Millen running an additional 1–1½ houses into the turn, and Frank Sprongl shifting into 4th gear in front of us and locking up all four wheels as he slid his Audi Quattro A2 around the corner, made me realize we still have a lot to learn. Glen Clark/Andy Proudfoot in car 510 were the only competitors to finish the day with a perfect 0, putting them in first overall. We found ourselves in 15th overall and still first in Group 8, but the next closest Group 8 car had picked up a point on us, cutting our lead to 10 points. Wednesday brought us another cold morning and a series of shorter stages, the first three being fast with few major turns. The average speeds for these are higher, causing the few tough turns to be harder to maintain speed. The third stage caught us, and everyone else (including Glenn/Andy), with some points. As the day warmed up the stages became a bit faster, and we picked up more points. The last couple of stages had to be cut short due to construction, and we picked up a few more points. We finished the day with 101 more points for a total of 154. By then both the other cars in Group 8 had had some sort of problem: one had blown an engine on the Gander stage Tuesday and the other had an issue on one of the shortened stages on Wednesday and picked up 189 15
points while getting their car back onto the course. Racer’s Luck.
stage 4, we realized we needed to look under the hood after the finish.
On the way back to the arena, we noticed a smell of burning oil in the car for about a second every 10 km or so. When we looked at the car that night, we decided it was a gasket that had come loose. An easy fix, and we were pretty much done for the night.
As we crossed the finish line, I could see in the mirror the cloud of smoke (no oil) that we had left in our wake. At this point the oil temperature gauge had come full circle and was stuck on the 0 mark. The dipstick turned out to be dry and we ended up flat towing the car back to the service area. Fortunately, that night’s stay was also in Marystown and we were scheduled to run the stage again. This gave us about five hours to solve the problem and return to the event missing only three or four stages. The long story made short is, we burned a hole in a piston and every time the engine cycled it drew oil out of the sump, added race gas, and ignited. We tried a bunch of ideas and with the exception of the smoke and a loss of power, we decided that disconnecting the fuel injector for that piston would get us through a couple of stages on Friday.
Enroute to the first stage on Thursday, we noticed the puff of burned oil again, so we stopped at the first gas station/ restaurant/grocery store to take a look. The pressure relief valve was spitting out a drop of oil onto the hot engine block every so often. Chris, our service crew, just happened to drive by and cut a piece of hose so it would drip into a coffee can (I got from the restaurant) that we put in a safe location in the engine bay. The first two stages were a turnaround stage, 17.3 km each direction, and the coffee can was working fine. After breakfast in Harbour Mille and a short 2-km run, the car started to act up a little, just some extra smoke when Afshin let off the gas to shift. By the time we arrived at Marystown South (stage 4), there was a constant stream of smoke pouring out the exhaust pipe. It seemed that perhaps the rings had gone bad or a valve seal was leaking. We planned to take this and the next stage easy and look more closely at the problem during the lunch break. But about halfway through 16
Friday brought us torrential rain. After crunching the numbers, we determined that we needed to finish two stages to get our Targa medal. You have to finish 75% of the stages to receive a Targa (Finishers) medal. We selected the two shortest stages for the day and decided to trailer the car there. The stages were a short 2 km run through the town of Brigus, once before lunch and once after. We also offered to help out as Marshals
for some of the earlier and later stages; this way we could also watch some of the stages. Because of the rain, the first run of Brigus and another stage had to be canceled, and when we got the car out of the trailer to make the second run we discovered a new problem. Somehow, when we were getting the car on to the trailer that morning, the engine decided it had had enough and seized. We had thought that there was a problem with the battery because it quietly died, so we had pushed it into the enclosed trailer and put the charger on the battery. In the pouring rain we discovered the truth. Racer’s Luck. After talking to the chief of scoring and looking at our numbers again, we did make our 75% with the two stages dropped and rounding. We trailered the car to the finish line at The Keg in St. John’s to push the car across the finish line and receive our medals. Racer’s Luck—I’m not sure if it was good to us or bad. We could have damaged the engine a couple of stages sooner and not made our 75% or it could have waited until after we finished Friday. Good luck or bad luck I’m not sure what to call it, but I’ve seen it. Racer’s Luck. More information about the Targa Newfoundland can be found at: http:// www.targanewfoundland.com/.

The night before Christmas... (not quite)
Twas the night before Christmas and caught at the light, As was a Saleen with no cops in sight, I will try, I will try, I will try with this small motor, To beat this damn Saleen, even with it's big power, As the light goes green and I pull like no joke, The Saleen erupts in clouds of tire smoke, Now Smasher, now Rev-ver, now Stroker, now Blitzin, These are the names of my four VTEC pistons, Racing ahead I'm the Star of the Action, But I know I'm in trouble when the Saleen gets traction, Grabbing second, I hear the RPM sing, My mirror is blocked by my shopping kart wing, I now hear the roar, of that big monster gaining, All I can do is keep that four-banger straining, In a second, the shockwave hits with a blast, And my stickers go flying now, a thing of the past, Don't bother with third, cause now it's too late, Just try to act cool, like you can relate, Looking up at the taillights as they get smaller, The driver backs off just to give me a holler, "You can't win them all," he says in fling, "You may not win any, in that silly thing", I scowled and revved and let out a sigh, And did my trademark high-speed ricer fly-by. I scowled and revved as he pulled out of sight, With my new mods tomorrow…it will be a better night. or for the more upscale generation 'Twas the night before Christmas and there under the bridge Sat a S430 Mercedes feeling ignored just a smidge, It's seems dear McBrue had family over for supper But the poor little Benz needed a quick pickerupper So Hanz und big Franz brought Mobile 1, about eight quarts And a selection of accessories they'd ordered from Auto Sport There were K&N Filters and dust shields for the wheels They had performance exhaust pipes of buffed stainless steels There were new fuses (9 amp) for the electric door locks And WD40 to make those squeaking brakes stop They had new MB floor mats straight from Stuttgart And high-tech new headlights to make darkness part So at last when they finished McBrues' poor MB Felt as though it was loved and maintained to a "T" So sleep on dear McBrue soon Christmas will be here But lift your glass to Hanz und Franz better yet, wish them good cheer!
