REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive Another year has come and gone. We had our annual meeting Nov. 1 and our officers were elected for 2012. I would like to thank all of the people who ran for office this year. If you were not elected, I hope that you will consider running again in the future as we can always use new ideas and help running the region. Here is the list of 2012 officers: • Regional Executive: Mike Toombs • Assistant Region Executive: Dave Ciufo • Treasurer: Elizabeth Thiel • Secretary: Carl Dresie • Activities Director: Mary Hartman • Director: Charles Tanck • Director: Chris De Minco • Director: Fran McAllister • Director: Mark Eksten In many ways the region is like a small business with over 400 stockholders. As a stockholder you want the club to supply with the activities you want. As a member of the board of directors, we want the club members to get what they want and have enough money to keep the region going. So being on the board can be a balancing act and we need a group of people who want to see the region succeed. I am very glad to say that I feel we have a group of people who share that ideal. We are putting on Westward Ho! once again next year. The event is scheduled for the weekend of June 24 and 25. Lew Giesy has volunteered to chair the event and there is going to be a group getting together to see what can be done to make this event a success (special race, pro race, enduro, etc). 4

Ye a r s a g o t h e m e m b e r s h i p recognition and annual awards were separate functions. In an effort to bring the attention to the awards and membership, we decided to separate the two activities again. On Jan. 14 we are going to have our 2011 awards banquet at the Burgundy Basin. At this banquet we will honor our award winners and everyone will get together at a social gathering. At a future date will recognize the 2012 membership longevity awards. We have not set a date for the membership function nor have we decided what type of an event it will be. Next year's board of directors will be talking about that and will let you know. This brings to mind that we are not an autocratic organization and we would like your input. Do you have anything that you would like to see the region do? Let us know! The Northeast Division had their fall meeting in Saratoga Springs the first weekend in November. Saturday was spent in meetings. Motorsportreg.com was discussed during the registration meeting. There was Solo safety steward training and timing and scoring training with the new divisional administrator. The National Race Committee (NRC) also met for two hours. There was

discussion on what and how many double national races there will be next year; the decision was one, to be hosted by Mahoning Valley Region at Nelson Ledges, May 26-28. We also talked about Bonus National events, which would allow an existing National race to offer one (or possibly two) race groups a second race, thereby creating a double national for that group. There is a selection criterion that I won’t go into here, but I’m sure that several Nationals will have some extra race groups next year. There was not much discussed at the NEDiv Council meeting on Sunday. There was a large power outage early Sunday morning (some New England members said it seemed like home) and the meeting was a very short one. Until next month, Mike

Dresie, Secretary Bench Racing The picture on page 14 of the November issue of Top End was confirmed as being Dave Avery’s “other MG.” The one not shown is waiting for a transmission fix. The Glen Region Solo run at Watkins Glen International in conjunction with The Last Chance races proved to be interesting. Although the course was set up in the paddock area of the track, it was NOT flat. Several cars had their wheels off the pavement, with one 5

or two getting “squirrelly” over the “yumps.” Several cars created a new course layout. Mike Toombs reported that altogether is was a good event. The recent race held at Nelson Ledges was a Quad Regional. Entry fees were essentially $100 per race. A question was raised concerning the running of snowmobiles, with wheels on the front replacing the skis, at Nelson Ledges. Would they make it as far as the Carousel? The drawing for the door prize, a bottle of “Not Granny’s Grape Jelly – Cabernet Franc” was won by Brian Buchman.

What’s in store for FLR in 2012 By MaryAnne Curry-Shults

Incumbent Regional Executive Mike Toombs and incoming Assistant Regional Executive Dave Ciufo share their goals and concerns for Finger Lakes Region, both its members and programs, in the upcoming year. Finger Lakes Region held its annual elections at the annual meeting on Nov. 1, 2011. Three positions ran unopposed with incumbents returning while other positions welcomed new officers. Charles Tanck was elected to a second term as Director. Returning officers are Mike Toombs, Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; and Carl Dresie, Secretary. Fran McAllister and Mark Eksten return to complete the second year of their Director- at-Large terms. This is Toombs' fifth consecutive year in the region's principal role and his second time taking on this monumental responsibility. "I would like to congratulate the winners in the election of officers for 2012," Toombs said, "and thank everyone who ran for office for supporting the Finger Lakes Region." His main goal is to see more people take an active role in region activities. Stemming from a suggestion planted by McAllister, separating the annual awards and membership banquet into two events is one way of reaching this goal. "We have had a combined awards and membership banquet for a number of years and we are hoping that we can get a good group out for a picnic and cut down on the length of the banquet in January," Toombs said. "We're looking at having a picnic recognizing membership during the summer sometime." 7

Although delighted with his incoming board, Toombs is concerned with the lack of representation on the board representing the Solo and Rally communities. The lack of participation in this year's RoadRally and RallyCross events has dwindled and another of Toomb's goals is to revive these programs. Sometimes a thankless job, Toombs acknowledged the nominating committee did an outstanding job putting together a diverse slate of candidates representing all the main interest areas of Club Racing, Solo and Rally. "I am very disappointed that there are no representatives on the board from the Solo and Rally programs. I am concerned that those programs may not get the attention that they need to continue what I would say are both excellent programs," Toombs said. "When I ask people to be on the nominating committee, I try to get people from each area of the club so that we can have a well-rounded ballot." He noted that three candidates, not directly involved in Club Racing as either a driver or worker, accepted a nomination. To round out the attention given to each area, Toombs has committed to working directly with each program.

"I plan on working more with each program to promote a more diverse board," Toombs said. "In the interim, I will continue attending both the Solo and Rally meetings to make sure that I and the board are aware of what is going on in the region." He is also pleased that the region will once again return to Nelson Ledges to host the regional Club Race, "Westward Ho!" "We are looking at different things that we can do to make an event we can be proud of and not a big money loser," Toombs said. New to the role of Assistant Regional Executive, Dave Ciufo is no stranger to the dedication required as a board member. He's been a region member nearly 25 years, during that time, serving two terms as Director and in the mid-'90s as Treasurer. Ciufo said the most prolific change during the duration of his FLR-SCCA involvement is the drop in participation at general Club events such as meetings, outings, and other non-competition occasions. "My impression is that the Club has also become more polarized by activity," Ciufo said. "There isn't as much interaction between road racers, rally folks and autocrossers as there used to be." Making sure the region remained financially sound and participation levels were stable was Ciufo's goal as a Director during 2010-2011.

"I think the club has a lot of dedicated people who make this happen year after year and we've done this better than a lot of regions," he said. "The challenge is keeping the bench stocked with new members who will continue this." Ciufo resides in Livonia with his wife Pam, daughters Melanie and Sarah and son Chris. He is the owner of Emerson Oil Co. and Emerson Express Co. When he's not behind the wheel as a competitor, he enjoys skiing, running, biking, playing guitar and traveling. ### NEXT ISSUE: Meet Activities Director Mary Hartman and Director Chris De Minco.

but he was seconds a lap faster than every other driver there in the rain that day. The red flag was shown just as he was about to pounce on Alain Prost for the lead of the race.

Winner of the Audience Award World Cinema Documentary at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best International Feature at the 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival, I saw this movie and it left me wanting to see it again.

This documentary winds through the twists and turns of Senna's life both inside and outside of the cockpit and rivets the viewer with some of the persecution he faced throughout his career. His life off the track with family and friends is in stark contrast to the pressure of race weekends. The politics of racing are on full display to see from behind the scenes, with fly-on-the wall closeness, in behind-closed-door driver's meetings with bombastic FISA president Jean Marie Balestre as well as outspoken Formula One World Champion drivers, primarily Alain Prost.

One of the greatest racing drivers of all time was killed while leading his last Formula One Grand Prix in Imola, Italy. He burst upon the F1 scene and nearly won Monaco after just his sixth start. In fact, the world will never know whether he would've won,

Whether or not the viewer is a Senna fan, his talent behind the wheel to extract the most out of a race car is undeniable. This movie really puts you in a position to understand his viewpoint and what he went through in his career. For a race fan, it's fascinating to watch his

"Senna" is a documentary on Brazilian Formula One driver Ayrton Senna, who won the F1 world championship three times before his death at age 34.

career unfold on the screen. For a non-race fan, this movie really demonstrates what it's like to strap one's self into the cockpit, and face the danger auto racing presents. What's more is that if you never knew who Senna was, you'd have a great appreciation for who he was as well as a greater appreciation for the sport. Some scenes leave the viewer to decide if Senna is persecuted by his peers and icons, or if he has had so much success and adulation that he is delusional about his on-track actions. Nevertheless, there are many moments that leave you in awe of what he was capable of on the track. It also highlights the fragility of the human spirit when fighting an uphill battle without the proper equipment. Lighthearted moments, both personal and public, distract you for a short time; however you know that the inevitable fatal crash is coming. The director puts you in the cockpit with Senna on that fateful day moments before the horrific crash at the Tamburello corner. The on-board video is represented in a grainy film

format to start and gradually improves over the course of the film. However, an early in-car lap at Monaco was terribly distracting as the sound of the engine note failed to match where the car was on track. Of course, back in the day, those types of limitations did happen, it nonetheless distracts from an otherwise stellar in-car experience. I highly recommend this film for both the serious and casual race fan alike and for those who want to learn more about why racing draws such passionate fans. Keep in mind that the language used is often raw and to top it off, it's written in the subtitles when he's speaking Portuguese or being interviewed by Brazilian TV. Poignant moments abound in this film and it'll leave you talking about how and why certain things happened. It's also quite interesting to see how a superstar handled unpleasant situations that most people have lived through at one point in time in their lives. "Senna" is a limited release. For a complete list of showings, visit www.sennamovie.com where you can also view the film's official movie trailer.
