Here we are entering into February already and the National Convention is right around the corner. I looked at the schedule of events going on at the convention and there are several meetings I’m interested in attending. We are changing the registration system that we use for racing. For many years we have been using a homegrown system developed by a racer who was also a web developer. He has gotten a new job and retired his website. We looked at two different commercial registration providers and decided to go with the one that the National Office has made an agreement with, MotorsportsReg. There are going to be some changes, but mostly for Registration and Timing and Scoring. During the National Convention there are meetings planned to discuss how to use the new provider. The National Office is trying to come to grips with which and how many members are involved in the various activities of the club. They plan on starting with collecting information from races. This may force Timing & Scoring (Carl Dresie) to make changes to the information he supplies 4
with the results. The next step will be getting information from the rest of our activities, which is going to take a little work. There is also an opportunity for other region activities to make use of the new registration system. The rally program has started the season out great. The first two events have already run. The first had over twenty-five cars and the second was part of the WINTR (Winter INTernational Rally) series that brought in a lot of out of town participations. Even if you don’t want to compete I know the rallymasters could use some help. The one thing I have learned about working rallies, there always seems to be some stories that come out of an event. If I were to tell some stories, I would tell the one about the checkpoint crew that went to checkpoint 10 instead of checkpoint 3 first. Then ended up being there 3 hours early and had to kill some time in Mount Morris (take my word for it, there is not much going on Saturday night in Mount Morris) and to top it off they didn’t have a clock. So think about it, look for flyers in the Top End. Carl threatened to put an ugly picture of me with my column if I made it to short. So now I’m trying to come up with filler. Oh I remember now, the region board has spent a lot of time trying to come up with ways to keep the Westward Ho! race going. As I have mentioned before we have never made any money on the race and lost a lot last year. We talked about cutting out worker favors and discontinuing the Saturday night dinner. With the number of drivers we think we could get to the race we would need to charge $380 per car. In this economy we should be charging the drivers less, not more! We haven’t given up yet, we’re still working on it, but it doesn’t look good. Well I hope this is enough, I will have more next month after the convention. Until next month, Mike

Bench Racing
Mike Toombs reported on his experience working a radio observation point during Halloween. The boredom of sitting on a bridge on a Halloween evening/night as a ham radio operator, there to report pranksters throwing objects off of 5
the bridge, is occasionally broken by a police officer wanting to know why you are there. The question that is raised is, “Do they use their radios to talk to each other?” Tony Zanni and Rich Smith ran the ex-Mike Toombs Celica in a RallyCross at Rolling Wheels race track and broke the header. The noise was so loud that they drove the car home wearing their helmets. The officer that pulled them over told them to take it easy. After the meeting was adjourned, Mike Brunner suggested that the region purchase a briefcase for Elizabeth Thiel. Elizabeth stated that she prefers the large envelopes that hold the treasurer’s supplies. Other “bench racing” stories are not reported, to protect the reputation of the subjects and the narrators.
Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes December 28, 2010 Location: 753 Klem Rd., Webster, NY Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:36 p.m. Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; John Walsh, Assistant Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Barbara Lissow, Activities Director; Dave Ciufo, Scott Moller and John Morris, Directors. Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order. The minutes of the Dec. 6, 2010, board of directors meeting were approved on a motion by John Morris seconded by Dave Ciufo. Note that the November board meeting was rescheduled from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6. 6
Activities Report – Barb Lissow The Year-End Banquet is set. The children’s price will be for under 13 years old. Mike Toombs passed out a list of the members that have membership anniversaries to be recognized. Barb Lissow will send out letters to those celebrating an anniversary New Business Scott Moller resigned his position as a board member. He will be Assistant Regional Executive for 2011. WGI is looking for non-profit organizations to usher at the NASCAR event. A donation will be made to the organization for their support. Race Report Chairs have not been named for the National race and the Fun One. Volunteers are still being accepted. Formula First and Pro IT groups may be considered for the Fun One. We may not have time in the schedule for the Pro IT. Westward Ho Conflicts with other events are such that the only reasonable dates to run Westward Ho are May 14 and 15. A race
series needs to be part of the weekend to increase the entry numbers to a level that the region would not suffer a significant loss. Formula First is not willing to run during the Westward Ho on the May dates. Other series need to be investigated. A pared down budget will be prepared. Options for reducing the expenses and increasing income were discussed. If projected entries are not high enough to meet the requirements of a minimal budget, Westward Ho will not be run during 2011. Rally Report Flyers for the first three events of the Winter Rally Series are included in the January issue of Top End. The first rally will be run on Jan. 8, starting at MacGregor’s in Canandaigua. The flyer for the fourth event is in the web version of the January issue of Top End. Tony Zanni has nominated for the position of RallyCross chair. Mike Toombs and Tom Langdon will review the duties of the RallyCross chair with Tony. The nomination was approved on

a motion by Carl Dresie, seconded by John Walsh. Solo Report There is no word on the status of the Seneca Army Depot. Brian Buchman has been given the task of following up on the status of this site. We will not have the National Tour event because of the delay in acquiring the site. A divisional event could be held at SeAD if approval is received early enough. Other sites have been located, but contact information has to be determined. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel Financial reports were not available for review. Some sponsorship monies and expense reports have not been received for the Mini-Con. Payment, including a late fee, has been made to Topeka for a RallyCross event. Paperwork, etc. from the RallyCross group has not been received. Top End – Carl Dresie The January issue of Top End was delivered to the Post Office on Dec. 26. The holiday and weather conditions are factors in the delay to mail.

From the editor’s bench Both the December and January issues of Top End were delayed in delivery due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays respectively. As stated earlier, the schedule for the preparation of each issue is to deliver to the printers 15 days before the next membership meeting. That allows for a week to print and a week to deliver. FedEx Office provides a list of invalid mailing addresses for each mailing. Over six addresses were returned for the January mailing. If you did not receive a paper copy and should have, go to the SCCA national website (www.scca. com) and log in to your information starting on the upper right corner. Correct your address information. While doing the mail address, check that your e-mail address is also correct. The region’s leader can use the e-mail addresses to send out notices prior to the next issue of Top End.

Looking back at Finger Lakes Region 2010: The cold and not-so-dreary winter By Lynn Randall, FLR Historian
January 2010
"January is here, with eyes that keenly glow, a frost-mailed warrior striding a shadowy steed of snow." –Edgar Fawcett 2010 is now history. A year ago, we had just finished celebrating the New Year, and realized that a new decade had begun. A little bit of cold weather, ice and snow don't slow down the members of the Finger Lakes Region of the Sports Car Club of America. The last year began early with the Finger Lakes Region's Winter Rally Series, on Jan. 2, with Alan Smith as rallymaster of the 11th running of “The Long Way Home.” Nineteen teams gathered at the Yard of Ale in Piffard, N.Y. to compete in this event. Two teams of dedicated road rallyists, Tim Penasack/Marc Goldfarb and Dave Siessicki /Steve McKelvie made the trip all the way from New England. Overall winners were Karl Haltiner and Mac McCann running a Subaru WRX in the Limited class with only 20
points. Right behind with 29 points, second place overall went to Penasack and Goldfarb. A few weeks prior, Tom and Deb Langdon offered a training rally and workshop for novices or for those who just wanted to polish up their skills. Unfortunately, the most exciting story I heard was some minor ditch exploration near checkpoint 13," said At a checkpoint during the Ithaca Rally Smith, "The only other cell phone call I received was an I-phone presented, the region's special awards left in the snow at checkpoint 2, but that were given. Marnie Soom received team quickly returned to retrieve it. the Top End Award for a member who made an outstanding contribution to At the annual Membership motorsports in general. Carl Dresie Recognition and Awards banquet on was the recipient of the Gene Dinkel Jan. 9 at the Burgundy Basin Inn, the trophy for outstanding worker, and the region recognized David Elder and Finger Lakes Region’s highest award, Barry Budlong for their 55th anniversary the George Merwin Trophy, went to as SCCA members. Other long-time Dave Avery. members recognized included Bob Burns, 50 years; Jeff Hume and John Although rallymasters Gary Thomas' Bailey, 45 years; Judy Dennis and Fran and John Kastenhuber's Ithaca Winter McAllister, 40 years; Missy Coykendall, Rally was lacking snow, 25 cars braved Rosemary Goodnight and Kenneth the Jan. 23 event. Nick Meyer took first with Jim Perrin in second, both driving Impreza WRXs. To prove that RallyX isn't just a game for boys, Michelle Quinn took the third spot in an Impreza 2.2.

Winter road rallying's popularity wasn't diminishing. Twenty-four teams came out for Karl Haltiner's "Route of all Evo IV" on Feb. 20. This time a team in the Stock class rose to glory as Jamie Hayslip and his navigator Scott Grinnell finished in the top three overall. First went once again to the Smith/Hobron duo and third to Braun/Gilmore.

Approaching the OMP on “Route of All Evil” (see page 11.) Plans were underway for the traditional Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally (STPR®) event in Wellsboro the beginning of June with Meridith Croucher at the helm as chairman. With the organizing committee split into the Rochester team and the Wellsboro team, and the addition of conference calling for those geographically located in neither location, things were shaping up for this popular stage rally as all participants now had a communication medium to solidify the shaping of what would be another excellent event. The second RallyCross was run on Feb. 28 at Perry's Park with 14 cars showing up to slide around in the melting snow, which provided an unlimited amount of mud. Once again, it was the Subie drivers grabbing the top honors. All competing in the Under 4 class driving Impreza 2.2s, the top there were Brian Ciarlei, Nick Meyer and Punjabi Kohli.
event. The rally was quick but not dirty as the roads were dry and hard packed. Competitors could have asked for dust minutes! Radio controls were used on this rally, which had not been done in quite a while. This rally gave local competitors the opportunity to compete with ProRally legend John Buffum and his co-driver Marc Goldfarb. He did edge out first place in Equipped, but only by three points, barely beating the nearly undefeated team of Smith/ Hobron. A local tradition since 1908, the Rochester International Auto Show gives region members the opportunity to share their passion, and show-off their prized four-wheeled possessions. Northern New Jersey Region was the host for the Northeast Division (NEDiv) Roundtable this year. Western New York Region announced that the long-running “Great Pumpkin” race at Nelson Ledges the end of October was cancelled. A NEDiv National Racing Committee (NRC) was formed, consisting of representatives of all the racing regions within the Division. It was decided there, that one of the 2010 races in the division would be a double race and Glen Region agreed to hold that race at Watkins Glen July 9-11, 2010. By the end of March, spring and warmer weather had begun to tease the Rochester and upstate New York area. While some choose to hibernate in front of a roaring fire during the snowy and often frigid winter months, or migrate to a warmer climate when the calendar hits November, members of the Rochesterbased Finger Lakes Region of the SCCA had shown that there was still adventure to be found outside of four walls. Rally Tom Langdon Interim RoadRally Chair
Rally Meeting Notes January 11, 2011 96 Church Street, Victor, NY
Nine RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present. The following discussions are grouped by subject. Winter Rally Series There is no provision in the rally setup and scoring program for emergency speeds during transits. As a result, competitors are forced to drive at speeds that may be fast for emergency conditions. A sample scorecard should be given to the check-point crews to show where the in and out times are recorded. In addition, the checkpoint crew instructions should more clearly show the location and the direction of rally traffic. The rallymasters need to coordinate their routes so that they minimize reuse of roads. Roads to avoid should also be considered in setting up rallies. This could be done using a mapping program and could include past rallies.
Is This a Road? The Jan. 8 rally was reviewed. Discussion included the need for triple cautions, tight times for transit zones, the use of seasonal roads and pauses in difficult sections. Overall it was a good rally.
Ben Gilmore and Jason Light. Items for discussion include regulations, schedule, event chairs, etc. RallyCross venues in addition to Perry’s Park are being investigated. A series with the Western New York and Central New York regions is another possibility.

The Equipped win—as well as the overall first place position—went to Alan Smith and Eric Hobron, with a raw score of 22 points, beating the second-in-class/ second-overall team of Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber. In Limited, Karl Hughes and Mark Laitenberger came in ahead of Jerry Kerwin and John Werner, also finishing third overall. What was thought to be a close one-point finish in the Stock class was later discovered to be a data entry error; when corrected, the Langdons took the win over Jamie Hayslip and Scott Grinnell. First-timers John Frame and Andrew Colaruotolo took the Novice class win in a '95 Audi with a respectable raw score of 663. Special thanks to everyone who helped make this event possible. Michael Schumacher navigated during the event for Cory while Amanda Dolan (A.K.A. Farrah Daze Rage) navigated for Marnie. Frank Beyer and Mike Mazoway came all the way from Syracuse to do the pre-check. Checkpoint workers were Mike Toombs, Jake Bucknam, Larry Wells, Paul Walker, Chris England, Timothy Norton, Alan Blood, Adrienne Hughes, Roy Hopkins, and John Walsh. Jamie Hayslip teched the cars. Tom Langdon taught the novice school. Matt Rhoads and Craig McMaster took care of scoring. Rick Barnes and his dad worked a checkpoint and were kept busy running sweep.
