REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive As I write this, last night was the annual awards banquet. It was nice to see everyone once again. I would like to congratulate all of the award winners; to be recognized by your fellow competitors and region members is always a good feeling. Here I am speaking from experience; Marsha and I were once again humbled to receive the Outstanding Contribution to the Region award. As well as the region awards I was also able to give Chris De Minco the Robert Stephens Award. Each year the Glen Region gives this award to a NYSRRC competitor who exemplifies the phrase “In the Spirit of the Sport.” Chris truly exemplifies this and was a great help when he volunteered to chair the Glen National race last year.
to work every day, but this is winter in upstate New York and we are supposed to have cold and snow. The most recent Rallycross was canceled because it was too muddy to run. If the weather we are having right now continues, we should be able to get back on the track in a couple of weeks. We are continuing to have problems delivering Top End to everyone in a timely manner. I have always been a supporter of the monthly newsletter. We currently are having the magazine printed by FedEx and then they mail it third class. It used to be that we would print and mail it with arrival time to local members to occur just before the monthly meeting. Most people received the January edition on the 14th, two weeks after optimum arrival. So we are looking at offering the option of opting out of the printed edition for our members. If members would rather read the online version (which has more art and more color), they need to ensure that Carl Dresie knows their email address. Carl would then notify you when Top End is available online and not send you a printed copy. I am one of the old-school people and prefer the printed copy, but if you are not, please let us know.

Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes January 3, 2012 Location: Burgundy Basin Inn, 1361 Marsh Road, Pittsford, New York 14534 Regional Executive Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:14 p.m. There were 28 members and guests in attendance at the Solo and general membership meetings. The following is arranged by topic and is not in chronological order. The November general membership meeting minutes were approved on a motion by Lynn Randall, seconded by Mike Brunner. Activities – Barb Lissow The awards banquet will be Jan. 14 at the Burgundy Basin Inn. Cost will be $25 for adults, $15 for children. Barb is taking reservations. More information is available in Top End and on the Finger Lakes Region website, www.flr-scca. com. Membership recognition will be moved to a later date. Fran McAllister is heading up a group planning this event. Starting in February the Solo and general membership meetings will be held at Murph’s, 705 Titus Ave. Irondequoit.
Not sure if you are going to get this in time, but I would be remiss not to mention that our monthly meetings are moving. The February meeting is going to be at Murph's Irondequoit Pub at 705 Titus Ave., just down the street from The House of Guitars.
Membership Report – Mike Brunner Mike reported that the region currently has 410 members, down four since Dec. 5, 2011. The total loss since April 2011 has been 42. Mike Toombs noted that we are the largest region in Area 10.

Club Racing drivers contribute to a fund that is used to reduce the membership dues of race workers who have reported their workdays through the national website. A maximum of 12 days will apply, with additional days being applied to other worker incentives such as a Volunteer Incentive Program hard card. Old Business Membership input is requested on options for distribution of Top End. (See the article in the January issue of Top End.) Costs are about $3 per issue. First class postage would add another $1.25 to that cost. Several options were presented. Race Report Our guest speakers tonight are Glenn Donnelly and John Lehmann. They will be talking about Central New York Raceway Park, www.cnyrp.com, located near Syracuse. Fun One Fun One 2011 suffered a small loss due to entries being down by about 140 over last year. Ways to reduce expenses, such as eliminating T-shirts, will be investigated. Westward Ho! Fran McAllister and Dave Ciufo are working with 2012 Westward Ho! race chair, Lew Giesy on this regional race. They are looking at ways to control costs and increase entries, with a goal of eliminating any losses. Dave guaranteed that any loss would be covered. Rally Report – Alan Smith 2012 Winter Series “The Long Way Home,” the first event in the Winter Series will start at the Yard of Ale in Piffard on January 7. Alan Smith is rallymaster. This rally will again be the first event of the WINTR (Winter INTernational Rally) series. We expect several national level rallyists will enter. Alan is looking for a navigator for the

course-opening car. The second event will be “The 3rd Annual Ithaca Winter Rally,” starting in Ithaca, with Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber as organizers. “Herbie’s Revenge 2” will start at MacGregor’s in Canandaigua on Feb. 4. Jerry Kerwin and John Werner are rallymasters for this third event in the Winter Series. Further information can be found in the January issue of Top End and on the Finger Lakes Region website, www. flr-scca.com. STPR® The Waste Management Winter Rally is scheduled for Feb. 11. Several teams are waiting for information to submit their entries. Total entries are expected to be up this year. Plans are to plow the course. Solo Report Brian Buchman reported that we would no longer be using run/work at events held at Rochester Institute of Technology. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel All bills have been paid. Solo financial activity for 2011 was provided to Jeff Colegrove to be used in preparing the 2012 Solo budget. The financial statements are available for review by request through Elizabeth. The savings and investment data for 2011 will not be available until later this week. Guest Speaker Glenn Donnelly and John Lehmann talked about the development of Central New York Raceway Park, a facility being developed in Brewerton, just north of Syracuse. Bench Racing The Toyota Celica that had a ‘biography’ in the August issue of Top End has moved on. Kurt Thiel has converted it to an ice racer and if we ever get cold enough to have good ice, it should be out competing in another venue. Being first on an unplowed road in fluffy snow can sometimes result in difficulty knowing where the road goes. When the snow covers the headlights it becomes hard to see where you are going. Several regions have joined the ranks of “no printed newsletter.” Murph’s is noted for having great chicken wings. Additional food and drink are available.
Central New York Raceway Park By Lynn Randall
CNYRP representatives, CEO Glenn Donnelly and facilities manager John Lehmann were guest speakers at the January FLR membership meeting. This planned racetrack facility, located off Route 81 between Brewerton and Central Square, NY, is slated to break ground in the spring of this year, with a planned opening in the fall. The ambitious undertaking will encompass 140 acres of land, proposed to accommodate a two-mile road course, half mile synthetic dirt track and a quarter- mile drag strip. When completed, there will also be heated garage spaces with 56 garage bays. Each garage will have a catwalk for crew members and spotters to view the course. Grandstand stadium seating will have a restaurant on the second level, with an opportunity to view the entire facility. Peter Argetsinger, son the late 5
Camerson Argetsinger, the founder of Watkins Glen motor racing, is the chief road course designer. Peter is currently a professional driving instructor, and has coached famed drivers Damon Hill and Juan Pablo Montoya. Peter has raced successfully in Europe for 14 years. In addition to the road and dirt tracks, there will be a skid pad, and room for autocross events. SCCA will be given opportunities to run events at this new facility, as well as be the worker body for those events. As per protocol, as the sanctioning body, SCCA will need to approve the facility for SCCA events to run here, but when it is built, and ready for racing, this new facility will be a needed additional venue for road racing in the Northeast. Let us hope this plan becomes reality. Members of Finger Lakes will be watching the progress.

Starting Feb. 7 the Solo and general membership meetings will be held in the back room of Murph’s, 705 Titus Ave. Murph’s is near the east end of a small strip mall at the corner of Titus and Cooper, just east of Hudson Ave., in Irondequoit. Additional parking is in back of the building. (See map below.) Food and a full bar are available (the wings are thought to be some of the best in town). Come out and enjoy the company of like-minded car enthusiasts.

National News SCCA Announces Reorganization to Solo, Rally Departments TOPEKA, Kan. (January 16, 2012) – With an eye on program development, enhanced customer service, and improved operational effectiveness, the Sports Car Club of America today announced a reorganization of the Rally/Solo department in the national office. Still headed by Howard Duncan, SCCA Vice President of Rally, Solo, and Special Programs, the reorganization features a number of faces familiar to both programs with changes in responsibilities. Deena Rowland has been promoted to Rally/Solo Administrative Coordinator. Rowland’s duties will expand from her role as Solo Administrative Specialist, to include being the primary liaison to the RoadRally Board and community, additional budget support duties, increased support role for the Tire Rack National Solo program, and taking a greater role in the RallyCross and Solo National Championship events. Rowland has been at SCCA since the move to Topeka in late 2002. Brian Harmer joins the Rally and Solo department after working for four years in the SCCA Technical Services department,
concentrating on vehicle compliance for Solo events. In the new role, Harmer will be the primary liaison to the Solo Events Board and the RallyCross Board, provide assistance in developing programs to help the Regions grow participation, oversee safety programs, provide assistance for the Tire Rack National Solo program, serve as the project leader for the RallyCross and Solo National Championships, and assist with administrative matters such as budget development and monitoring. Sandi Brown will continue as an independent contractor, expanding her existing role of administration chief of the National Solo program to become the National Solo Operations Manager. Brown will tap into her years of experience and contacts within the SCCA community to provide enhanced coordination with the host Regions for events on the Tire Rack National Solo calendar and to better serve participants by managing the on-line registration for these events. Brown will also have a role in the RallyCross National Championship. In addition to the changes on the staff, Heyward Wagner will continue in an independent contractor role as the Solo Communications Manager, including responsibility for the program’s e-newsletter, SoloMatters.

They have directed that the CRB present a proposal for alignment of classes, with an overall reduction in the number of National classes. The proposed goal is 24, or less, national classes. So, suspension of the 2.5-rule does not mean that classes with low participation numbers will automatically continue in the National racing program. The CRB, in turn, has asked the Advisory Committees to start working on how to make this happen. Although the Touring and SS Committee has been working on this for some time, all classes are now included. The BoD has directed that the proposal be presented to them at the National Convention on March 3rd.
SCCA Announces New Club Racing Majors Program TOPEKA, Kan. (January 16, 2012) – Sports Car Club of America announced today a new, top-level Club Racing program dubbed the “Majors,” launching as a pilot program in the Midwest, Rocky Mountain and Southwest Divisions in 2012. Focused on providing fresh, enhanced opportunities for National-level classes within a geographical racing area, the Majors offer a new format race weekend focused on clustering competition and providing greater value for racers. The Majors concept comes from a two-year planning committee directive from the SCCA Board of Directors to evolve the top level of SCCA Club Racing with the changing times. For decades, “National” racing has served as the top Club Racing level, providing a path toward both Divisional Championships and the National Championship Runoffs®. “By definition in the SCCA General Competition Rules, National racing has not changed for decades, but many of these events have evolved away from their true purpose—to provide a high level event for the most serious competitors,” SCCA Chairman of the Board Jerry Wannarka said. “The Majors program does just that, not unlike the Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo® Series does for the autocross community.”
A Break from the Norm
The most significant philosophical and structural change from the current Club Racing model deals with treating competition classes

differently from one another at select events. Classes in the Majors program are placed in one of two groups—Invitational or Showcase. The highest subscribed classes in a particular geographic zone will be included in the Invitational program, with the remaining classes comprising the Showcase group. Both the Invitational and Showcase classes will have special opportunities throughout the season.
The 2012 Majors Pilot Program
For 2012 the Majors program will coexist with the current Regional and National programs in the Midwest, Rocky Mountain and Southwest Divisions. These three Divisions will be combined to make up the Majors “zone.” The Majors Championship will be comprised of six weekends, two being geographically held in each Division, including the three BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour events and three Invitational class-only events (one per Division). Additional opportunities will be planned on separate weekends for Showcase classes While all 29 National classes will be part of the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour events, the Invitational weekends will be a special opportunity for the highest-subscribed classes based on combined participation numbers within the Zone. Limiting classes for the Invitationals allows organizers to target two classes per race group, allowing for split starts to cluster likeclassed cars together on the racetrack. All six Majors races in 2012, including the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour events and the Invitationals, will feature a common preevent registration process, chief steward and management team from the National office for continuity and consistency, while still being operated by the local Regions to provide the local flavor and atmosphere. The idea is to take the best elements of the Club Racing experience and meld them with some components often found at professional events. Making events better than, and different from, other events is a key focal point.
Events
Each of the events will feature a pair of “points” races toward the Majors Championship (for the Invitational classes) that will also count toward the existing National and Divisional Point Championships. At Invitational events, drivers can expect to be on track two to three times per day for no less than 20 minutes each. For two-day events, Saturday will feature traditional timed qualifying followed by a 45-mile points race. Sunday will grid cars based on the fast laps from Saturday’s race for a brief qualifying race, which
will set the grid for Sunday’s feature 45-mile points race based on finishing position.
A New Championship and Path to the Runoffs and Super Sweep Award
Combining participants from the Midwest, Rocky Mountain and Southwest Divisions for the six Majors events creates a new opportunity for a meaningful Championship. Not only does a driver need to better the competition from his own Division, but also those from the neighboring Divisions as well. A driver will count his or her best eight finishes (out of 12 possible) toward their respective class Championship, using the GCR Points schedule established for Divisional Championships. Along with the prestige and prize package to be announced later, the Champions will be recognized as having met the second leg (Divisional Championship) of the four-legged Super Sweep award. The Midwest, Rocky Mountain and Southwest Divisions were grouped into the pilot zone based on the ability to travel out of Division within, for the most part, one day’s tow. Additionally, the average entry counts of each Division could benefit greatly with the incentive for drivers from the neighboring divisions to participate in one or more event outside of their own Division.
Showcase Events
Showcase Events are for the Nationallevel classes in the program not covered in the Invitational program. For the Pilot program, this will include 19 classes, which makes up just over 30 percent of the total entries based on 2011 participation numbers. Showcase classes will have additional racing opportunities at other events, likely a Bonus National in 2012. This program could also include festival events, anniversary races or marque-specific opportunities.
Future Expansion
The 2012 Pilot program is designed to both provide the Majors opportunity and experience for those within the Pilot Zone, but also be a test-bed for a coast-to-coast rollout targeted for 2013. While the Invitational program will initially include approximately 10 classes, there is nothing locking the program into one set of Invitational weekends per Zone. If more than 10 classes within a Zone can support the concept of clustering competition and providing good car counts at each event, then that number can, and will, evolve as needed. MIKE: “I don’t have a lot of jokes. (Sound of clapping.) But, I do have to say there was one thing if people read the Saturday morning Democrat and Chronicle.

The wife comes home and the husband is in his lounge chair. She says, “I just had the worst ride home ever, I ran out of gas in the middle of an intersection and people were honking at me and cussing me out. They were wanting me to get the car out of the intersection.” And he says, “What did you do about it?” She says, “I came home and told you.” ---“ “We have a couple of door prizes. ---“ 10
“That’s my emceeing. Now for my opening remarks.’ “Well a little more emceeing. Last year I made a pitch for mechanic of the year. At the February meeting I was awarded this trophy. I know many of you did not see it. It is the FLR Three-quarter Mechanic of the Year. I won it based on the fact that I torqued 15 of the 20 lug nuts on my car when I put the snow tires on my car. That’s why I got ¾ mechanic. I had some issues a couple of weeks ago. I was successful on earning this trophy for another year. I could have sworn on a stack of bibles that all the lug nuts were torqued. I know they were torqued. But something wasn’t right. $^*)$ I had only missed two or three of the lug nuts. So I did much better than last year. But I didn’t take it to the dealer and ask what was wrong with my car. I earned this award last fall and again this year.” “Everything I said in the past still applies this year. It still takes a lot of people to keep this organization running. There are no unimportant people when it comes to putting on our events. From the tech inspector, to the Rally safety steward pre-checking the rally course, every job is an important part of the club. We are lucky to have a region that has four very active groups; race, Solo, RoadRally and RallyCross.” “This past year we put on two races; the Glen National and the Fun One. I need to thank the chairs for each of these events; Chris DeMinco and Rich Smith for the national, Russell Jaslow and Wilma Giesy for the Fun One. The Glen National took a lot of extra effort this year because it was one of the two double nationals in the Northeast Division.” “The Solo program had eight events and helped put on the Northeast Divisional Championships. Brian Buchman continued to look after the local program and pushed it forward with the support of a countless number of people. The Divisional Championship was put on by the division and Tina Reeves, a member of our region, was
one of the chairs. Then there were the chairs for each of the events, three at Rochester Institute of Technology and five at Seneca Army Depot. These people spent hours designing and setting up the course for each event. Once again it looks like we have lost the Seneca Army Depot as a Solo site for this year. There are still a couple of avenues being looked at to get back in there and I am hoping to return to my home county, but it’s not looking good.” “This year we put on our fourth Street Survival School. Dave Avery continues to chair a fine event. Each year we gain a little knowledge on running it and hopefully help some young drivers live to be old drivers. We need to maintain our commitment and continue running these events. We also need more people to help, so please consider coming out and helping this year.” “The RoadRally program put on their usual night rallies once again. Deb and Tom Langdon did a fine job of 'not' chairing the Rally program for another year. As well as the night rallies during January and February there were summer rallies for a little extra fun. The rally event chairs spend a lot of time laying out the rallies, checking out the mileage and checkpoint locations so that every one running the rally can have fun. The one thing I have found out by working the rallies is that there are always a lot of stories that come out of each event.” “Tony Zanni joined the region and instantly took over the RallyCross program. We owe thanks to Bruce Perry for continuing to allow us to put on events on his property. We are still looking for other sites and if you happen to have a big field that you don’t mind people driving in let Tony know.” “STPR® LLC continues to be efficiently run by the three managers, Lew Giesy, Meridith Croucher and Alan Smith. Each year they strive to make STPR a better event. Last year the added

the one-day event in February with plans for it happening again this year. This year the Waste Management Winter Rally is scheduled for February 11.” “There are also a lot of people working in the background helping keep the region running. Carl Dresie spends a lot of time putting together Top End every month. I have always felt and continue to feel that a monthly newsletter is very important. I would like to say we will continue to put one out, but I’m beginning to wonder that myself. Our mailing has become more erratic. So we will have to look at that in the coming year as to whether we want to continue spending that money. MaryAnne Shults continues to keep our web page up to date. She is also the person who did the program for tonight’s festivities. And the Solo board, the Rally board and the Club Racing board are always there to make sure that each program continues to run well.” “I also need to thank the board of directors for their support and help this year. fixture in our region. She is a great driver and an extremely dedicated worker and advocate for Solo. She stepped up to cochair Divisionals this past July which is a huge responsibility in itself but even more importantly she was instrumental in allowing the Finger Lakes Region's Solo program to have a season last year. What many people may not know is that she nearly single-handedly negotiated with the Seneca County Economic Development Corporation to allow us to use the runway at the Seneca Army Depot. This consumed many hours of her already busy life and probably gave her her first gray hair. Our region cannot convey how much we appreciate what she has done this year as well as in years past. Hopefully this award will show a fraction of the gratitude that we have for everything she does so I would like to give the Outstanding Solo Contributor Award to Tina Reeves.” OUTSTANDING SOLO ROOKIE OF THE YEAR – (Finger Lakes Trophy) Awarded to the Finger Lakes Region driver who shows the greatest degree of promise during their first full season of Solo competition. The person shall also be a credit to the Region. BRIAN: “The next award, also chosen by the Solo board, is given to a

driver who shows the greatest degree of promise during his or her first full season of Solo competition. He or she shall also be a credit to the region. This year’s recipient started with our novice school at RIT in April. From that day she was hooked. The amount of enthusiasm she showed for autocross was staggering. She finished 25th out of 30 at the novice school and then came back just the next day to our first regular event to finish 9th out of 19 novices. She attended 7 more events throughout the season and continued to improve. She brought friends with her to watch and to compete and could always be found chatting with someone either about how much fun she was having or how to improve her driving. For just her first year she shows amazing promise which is why I would like to give the Solo Rookie of the Year Award to Gillian Pielow.” SOLO IMPROVED DRIVER Awarded to the driver who has shown the greatest improvement in his/her driving performance over the course of the season. This driver will also be a credit to the Region. BRIAN: “The next award is given to the driver who has shown the greatest improvement in his/her driving performance over the course of the season. The driver will also be a credit to the region. This year's recipient is no stranger to autocross having competed fairly regularly over the past few seasons. He regularly finished mid-pack and occasionally in the trophies. Always considered a good driver, he worked the car and the course equally well. This year was different though. At the first event he had a good showing with a 6th place finish out of 20 in Road Tire, good enough for a trophy. Apparently that was not good enough for him though. At every single local event he attended after that he placed first for a total of seven first-place finishes and then secured the Road Tire season title in a field of very skilled competitors. The best part of this story is that all this was accomplished in a car that was owned by another Road
Tire competitor! This is why the Most Improved Solo driver award goes to Andy Cocilova.”

Some consideration may be given to a driver’s performance and contributions during the season to the FLR Solo program as well. The winner will represent the Finger Lakes Region with dignity as well as excelling in his / her driving competition. BRIAN: “The final Solo award tonight is given to a driver who demonstrated exemplary skill in his/her driving during the season. competition. This year’s recipient fulfills all of these requirements and more. In our local Solo series he placed first in his class in five out of the eight events he attended. When he was first in class he also was first in overall PAX. PAX is a multiplier, meaning that if everyone was in the same car, he would have been fastest. In the rare instance he was not first in class and PAX he was second only to his equally competitive brother. This is all very impressive but the real success came when he attended nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska. Not only did he win he class there, he also beat the nearest non-sibling competitor in his class by a staggering 2.5 seconds and placed second in overall pax out of over 1100 drivers in attendance. As you can see he is used to leading on the track. For 2012 though he will also lead off the track taking over my role as Solo chairman. This year's winner of the Solo driver of the year award is the same winner as last year making him to only person in the history of our club to win two consecutive years in a row. Congratulations Jeff Colegrove.”

We are a pretty small group when it comes down to it. So when it comes down to looking at people’s credentials, it is easy to figure out who is where in the crowd. MOST IMPROVED DRIVER Awarded to the Finger Lakes Region driver who has shown the greatest improvement during the season. Usually not awarded to a beginning driver who shows great promise, but to a license holder whose improvement over the previous season has resulted in a greatly improved competition record. He shall have been a credit to the region on the race course. RICH: “This year our Most Improved Driver is an individual who at the July Sprints qualified third but managed to finish seventh out of 17 in the race. Improved at the Fun One by finishing fourth then third out of 20. Improved greatly at the Last Chance race by qualifying in the pole position and
DRIVER OF THE YEAR – (John and Emily Castle Trophy) Awarded to the Finger Lakes Region driver who has compiled the most outstanding record in SCCA race participation. Caliber of races attended and competition in class are considered as well as record of success. Recipient shall have been a credit to the Region at the racecourse. RICH: “I also stand here not 100 percent knowing a little bit of information, but I’m going to share it anyway. The next award is Driver of the Year and I’m not sure if the Pro 1600 Formula Series is SCCA- sanctioned.” [From the crowd, “It is.”] “Great, then I’m going to keep talking. This person competed in two different events, two different tracks and didn’t have staggering numbers. Sixteenth out of 22 and 23 and 14th out of 21. But taking in mind that the top eight competitors were faster than the track record, I think it is rather remarkable. Also third at Mid-Ohio 13
and two consecutive seconds at Watkins Glen, with really great races. I’m happy to report that Erik Shepard is Driver of the Year.”

TOM: “I did notice a problem with the program here. It says, “presented by Tom Langdon, Rally Chair” and we all know that is not true. It also lists a lot more awards than we have.” “A quick overview of the Rally program. This year we did five events total, we did four winter rallies. We attempted several times to do a daytime rally, spring, summer and fall. It finally got done in the fall. Rick Barnes kept recycling the event until it was done. It was quite successful and we wound up with 16 cars and everyone had a good time. Other than that one of the things is that we have a lot of Rally meetings, which by the way are quite a lot of fun if you happen to have an open Tuesday evening you want to waste.” “When you set a rally up, it is a double-edged sword. Number one, it takes forever to set one up, with up to 200 miles of driving several times to get the route done." "The other thing is that you can’t run all four of the events in the winter series. What we have done for our rally contributor of the year, the Rally board has decided that the rallymasters should get this award for the time and effort involved and not being able to run the event. Not many of them are here tonight; they are all out setting up rallies.” OUTSTANDING RALLY CONTRIBUTOR – (John Robinson Outstanding Rally Contribution Award) Recipients are selected by the Rally board and may be competitors, workers, organizers, or any combination thereof, in the Road Rally and/or Performance Rally program. Then we have a firsttime event as rallymasters with Scott Grinnell and Jamie Hayslip writing “Cabin Fever.” “I received a rather panicky phone call on Friday before the event from Jamie, where on Friday the weekend was a mud bath but had frozen up by Saturday. Up to 400 pounds of mud were picked up by the VW during a pre-run. Jamie is here tonight.” “The last rally was the “Fall Colour Tour” with Rick Barnes as rallymaster. A very well thought out, laid out event. As a reminder, they are serving cake at Kenny and Becky’s wedding next door. After this, I’m going over there and enjoy the cake and band.” “A couple of more quick notes on Rally; anyone that would like to be rally chair speak up, we are always looking for a person to chair the rally effort. TOM: “Moving along, the other award is for Rally Worker of the Year or the Steve Kittelberger trophy. This particular individual took a spot that I wouldn’t have taken; sort of a thankless job requiring a lot of dedication. Making great strides, even trying a night event that was well thought of. But we get more entrants in RallyCross from Western New York than we do from our region. Our Rally Worker of the Year is Tony Zanni.”

MECHANIC OF THE YEAR AWARD – (AAMCO Transmission Trophy) Awarded each year to a member in good standing of SCCA who has worked without financial gain as a primary motive. Success of the supported team

should be strongly considered. The winner should normally come from Club Racing, but mechanics that work on Solo or Rally teams are not excluded. The winner shall be a credit to the sport. There shall be no repeat winners. Nominations should be made by the Rally, Solo and Competition Boards and the Road Racing Drivers Club with final selection being made by the Board of Directors. Mechanic of the Year (AAMCO Transmission Trophy) presented by Mike Toombs MIKE: “The description of the award is in the program. I won’t read the description. This is one of the more difficult awards to give out, as you cannot receive it more than once. It was not given out last year, but it is the one I was campaigning for – but got the ¾ mechanic award instead. If you see someone that may qualify, let a member of the board know. The board may not see everyone that qualifies. This year’s winner co-drove with Gary Lippert. Gary had an incident with the car that required a lot of work to get it back together. The mechanic of the year is awarded to Keith Guthrie. He is not here tonight. OUTSTANDING WORKER AWARD – (Gene Dinkel Trophy) Awarded to the Finger Lakes Region member who has devoted a notable amount of his or her time as a worker at motorsports events sponsored or sanctioned by the Finger Lakes Region. The accumulated working points recorded in the Region’s High Points for that year will be considered. Primary consideration will be given to individuals who have worked in general worker categories, not as chiefs of specialties or as chairpersons of events. The individual must have worked in at least two different motorsports areas at least once, worked on at least one public service activity if the region has conducted such, and been a true credit to the region.
Outstanding Worker (Gene Dinkel Trophy) presented by Mike Toombs MIKE: “The Outstanding Worker Award has a large number of outstanding names. It takes a lot of work to keep the region together. Earlier I’ve given the names of a lot of people that have done a lot of work. There is one individual this year, as well as in previous years, who has done a tremendous amount of work for the region. Anyone that needed help, this individual was there to help, never looking for anything in return. I know personally I appreciate what this individual has done to help me. It is a deserved award. All areas of the club activities are taken into account—racing, rallying, concours, publicity, community services, etc. Participation is considered as well as working. The recipient should represent the best the region has to offer the sport.

Rally Meeting Notes January 10, 2012 96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order. The following six RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon and John Werner.
RallyCross Series The next RallyCross is scheduled for Jan. 15 at Perry’s Park. The forecast for cold weather should make the field solid enough to run the event. Winter Rally Series A budget for the series will be presented at the next Finger Lakes Region board meeting. The Long Way Home had 19 teams entered. Three of the teams do not normally run our winter series. Results are on the website (http://www.flr-scca.com/rally/2012/WRS_Event1_Results.html) and will be printed in Top End. Alan Smith is writing an article. The repurposed race trophies looked pretty good. The 3rd Annual Ithaca Winter Rally, running Jan. 21, is in good shape. Start and finish is at Manos Diner. Lodging is available across the street from the diner. Gary Thomas needs one more checkpoint crew. Herbie’s Revenge 2 will start and end at MacGregor’s in Canandaigua on Feb. 4. More information is available at http:// www.flr-scca.com/rally/2012/HerbiesRevenge2012_flier.pdf. Carl Dresie agreed to ride along with Jerry Kerwin to do a rally safety and pre-check. The Feb. 18 rally will be based on John Werner’s 2009 event. The Eiserd’s Elves committee will be organizing the rally. The date is in conflict with the Ohio Winter Rally. Karl Haltiner is rallymaster for the last March 3 event. Information for a flier is to be provided for Top End and the website.

STPR® A rallymaster is needed for the charity rally run as part of the Performance Rally weekend. Waste Management Winter Rally Entries are open for the Feb. 11 winter rally in Wellsboro. Miscellaneous Discussions John Werner has purchased and mounted a set of Falken snow tires. Expect a report on the traction of these stud less winter tires. Manetti’s in Canandaigua is being reopened as a Mexican restaurant. They do not yet have a liquor license. John Werner stated that Mickey Finn’s in Victor is willing to be our ending location. Tom Langdon noted that the new VW Rs will be available in March. Tom Langdon talked to Steve McKelvie regarding Rally Safety Steward training. We need qualified instructors. Miscellaneous topics of discussion included: deer damage, auto insurance, dog diets. (popcorn, meat on a string and alcohol), dog names (and why), misuse of retirement funds, in plant retirement, shifting a car with a bum right shoulder and driving through traffic in a snowstorm.

A RoadRally of approximately 137.28 +/- 10 miles east and south-east of Rochester, NY Entry fees are: $35/car for SCCA members, $40/car for guests. Post rally buffet - $10 Series classes are: Equipped, Limited, Stock and Novice. Speed groups are: A - 45, B - 40, C - 36 mph Snow tires are recommended (all season tires may limit your speed group), tow rope/strap, 90 minutes of flares or a DOT triangle are required. Start: Burger King, 20 Muar St. (just off Rt. 20) Canandaigua, NY Finish: Cheap Charlies Restaurant and Lounge 8 Elm St. (Route 444) Bloomfield, NY

The roads are used infrequently for the Finger Lakes Region’s Winter Rally Series. So you will be experiencing new roads with fewer instances of high adrenaline flow.
