Meeting Minutes

REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive

A lot of clubs have a quiet time – a time when things slow down and people get a time to breath, maybe even do some other things. After close to 30 years as a member of the SCCA, I keep waiting for the quiet time and I haven’t seen it yet. Now don’t misunderstand me, if I wanted to I could slow down, but how can you sit by and not join in the fun.

We are in the third week of January as I write this. So far we have had one road rally and our annual banquet. This coming weekend is our second rally, this one starting in Ithaca. Speaking about rally, John Walsh stated that the Finger Lakes Region accounts for over 5% of the rally entries for the entire club. How can I sit by and not take part in that? How can I let everyone else have all of the fun? Now I am not someone who wants to compete in the winter rally series, but I can go and help out, working that check point in the middle of nowhere.

Mary Hartman has taken on the task of finding more social activities for the membership to participate in. She wants to know if people would like to do other non-SCCA activities. Maybe get together to watch a race, or miniature golf, or go-karting? Wait, the last one might not be wise, I’m sure we would end up racing around the go-kart track.

I’m going to cut my column short this month. Carl is going to publish my remarks from the banquet and I want to make sure everyone takes the time to read them. I think we have a great club and it’s not because of one person, but a lot of people – so please read my remarks.

Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes There was no general membership meeting in January. Ed.

Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes December 18, 2012 Location: Murph’s Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit, NY 14617 Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m.

Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; Dave Ciufo, Assistant Regional Executive; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Mary Hartman, Activities Director; Chris DeMinco, Fran McAllister and Charles Tanck, Directors.

Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order.

The minutes of the November 27, 2012 board of directors meeting were approved on a motion by Charlie, seconded by Chris.

Activities Report The Year-End banquet is set for Jan. 12 at the Green Lantern in Fairport. Glen Region representatives will be invited to our Year-End banquet. Mike and Marsha Toombs will attend the Glen Region banquet.

Barb Lissow will be guest speaker at the February general membership meeting. She will review her trip to the Circuit of The Americas and the Formula One race.

The membership awards picnic will be held June 5. (Post eeting: Camp Eastman has been confirmed as the site for the membership award picnic.

The tentative date for the “Old Timer’s Picnic” is Saturday afternoon, August 24. A site needs to be confirmed.

New Business The January membership meetings (Solo and general membership) scheduled for Jan. 8 have been cancelled. Any business needing to be transacted will be covered at the Jan. 12 banquet. The meeting location will not be available. The web version of Top End will be changed to show this cancellation. It will also be sent out via e-mail, Facebook and the notice boards.

The cancellation was approved on a motion by Carl, seconded by Mary.

Active co-chairs are needed for events and activities, to insure that there are people able to step in and take over these duties.

Old Business The Year End banquet awards were reviewed. The October issue of Vintage Racecar magazine will be given along with the Sportsmanship Award.

Race Report Fran, as Competition Board Chair, and Westward Ho! chair Lew Giesy will talk to Bob Guhde about the schedule for Formula First. This will allow the format for their participation to be set before race schedules are set.

Chris has data showing that Club Racing participation in the Northeast Division is down. Overall participation has been down four to five percent over the last few years, while entries at Watkins Glen have been down ten percent per year over that time. With the increasing track rental costs at Watkins Glen and the decreasing participation, we cannot afford to run events at WGI. The five SCCA events represent 20 percent of the weekends at the track.

Chris is in discussion with the Glen Region about making a presentation to WGI showing that we cannot afford to run money losing events at the track.

Fran will form a race committee to oversee our events for 2013. The competition board member list will be updated and printed on page two of Top End and on the website: www.flr-scca. com/address.html.

The possibility of running a PDX on Friday before Westward Ho! was discussed. Chris reviewed a procedure used at previous PDX events.

Rally Report The Rally awards and Christmas party is Dec. 22 at Cheap Charlie’s in Bloomfield.

“The Long Way Home” event with Alan Smith as rallymaster is scheduled for Jan. 5. The following event is Jan. 19 running out of Ithaca with Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber as rallymasters.

Solo Report The Avon go-kart track has not been modified for cars. The kart start loop that could be used is narrow and overgrown.

Treasurer’s Report There was no treasurer’s report.

National News

Lisa Noble Selected As SCCA Board Chairman TOPEKA, Kan. (December 20, 2012) – In its final meeting of 2012, the Sports Car Club of America Board of Directors named Lisa Noble, of Manhattan, Kan., as its chairman for 2013. The Board also approved appointments for various committees and board liaisons that will oversee the organization in the coming calendar year.

Noble is a long-time Kansas Region SCCA member and begins her sixth year as the Area Six Director. As a Formula Vee driver, Noble was the first female in the class to earn a National race win, in 1995 at Heartland Park Topeka. Noble was also the 1999 Kimberly Cup award winner for most improved driver. She has spent the past three years serving as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors.

“This is an incredible time to be a part of SCCA,” Noble said. “We are presented with tremendous opportunities in 2013 to advance our Club into the future while also celebrating its heritage.

I thank my fellow Board members for their confidence and look forward to serving the Club as Chairman.”

The torch passes to Noble from outgoing Chairman Jerry Wannarka, who did not seek reappointment for a fourth year as Chairman.

SCCA Extends Its Partnership With BFGoodrich Tires Through 2014 TOPEKA, Kan. (January 11, 2013) – The Sports Car Club of America announced today an agreement to extend a partnership that designates BFGoodrich® Tires as the “Official Street Tire of the SCCA” and title sponsor of the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour events through 2014.

said SCCA President & CEO Jeff Dahnert. “Not only has BFGoodrich expanded its presence within our membership both through great competition and street tires, but it has been instrumental in helping to create a premium experience within our Club Racing program that was previously missing. BFGoodrich Tires recognizes the importance of SCCA and amateur motorsports, and all of SCCA appreciates their efforts.”

The BFGoodrich Super Tour highlights the SafeRacer National Series schedule with six prestigious events at Sebring International Raceway, Auto Club Speedway, Circuit of the Americas, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, VIRginia International Raceway and Watkins Glen International. Each of these events are a part of the 2013 U.S. Majors Tour.

In addition to the extension, BFGoodrich Tires strengthens its partnership with SCCA by expanding its presence in the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Tour and the Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Series, with an enhanced program for the country’s premier autocross events. That program will include joint promotional activities with the SCCA and a larger contingency program for participants.

Finger Lakes Region 2012 Annual Awards Banquet, January 12, 2013

(Note: Not all remarks were captured and most have been edited and summarized. My apologies for misquoting you. Some are taken from the presenter’s prepared notes. CFDresie, Secretary.)

Opening Remarks – Mike Toombs MIKE: (Sound of pounding.) I didn’t bring my hammer! I’ll be honest with you, I hate to break up the conversations going on; that is why I didn’t get things started.

I know that at ten o’clock when we finally get finished people are going to want to leave. That was a joke.

So thank you all for coming. Your program says that the master of ceremonies is Mike Toombs, so I’m going to introduce the guy giving the opening remarks, that is me. That is all the master of ceremonies is going to do.

I’ve given this same speech every year for the past few years so when I start the speech I look at what I’ve said in the past. Everything I have said in the past still applies this year; it still takes a lot of people to keep this organization running.

There are still no unimportant people when it comes to putting on our events.

From the sound control crew listening to cars; to the Solo safety steward prechecking the course, each job is still an important part of the club.

We are lucky to have a region that has four very active groups; race, Solo, RoadRally and RallyCross. This past year we put on two races, Westward HO! and The Fun One. I need to thank the chairs for each event – Lew Giesy for chairing the resurrected Westward Ho! and Chris DeMinco and Elizabeth Thiel for chairing The Fun One. Lew tried some different things with Westward Ho! last year and he came up with a format that we hope will continue to grow the event for the future.

The Solo program lost one of its best sites but continued to put on eight quality events. Jeff Colegrove continued to look after the active program and push it forward with support from a countless number of other people. The chairs for each event spent hours designing and setting up courses so that people would continue to come out and compete and have fun. We have not been able to reacquire the Seneca Army Depot as a Solo site; there are still a couple of avenues being looked at to get back in there.

Last year we did not put on a Street Survival School. I continue to be a strong proponent of these schools and hopefully we can help some young drivers live to be old drivers. We need to maintain our commitment and continue running these events. We also need more people to help, so please consider coming out and helping this year.

The road rally program put on their usual night rallies once again. Deb and Tom Langdon did a fine job not chairing the rally program for another year. (The fifth year since I’ve been Regional Executive.) As well as the biweekly Saturday night rallies during January and February, there were a couple of other rallies for a little extra fun. We resurrected the destination rally with Lynn Randall’s course running from Avon to the Glen Curtis Museum in Hammondsport. The rally event chairs spend a lot of time laying out the rallies and checking out the mileages and check point locations, so that everyone running the rally can have fun. There are always a lot of stories that come out of most rallies. (Mike related an incident that took place while working a check point during the Long Way Home.)

Tony Zanni is continuing his stellar chairmanship of the RallyCross program.

We also owe thanks to Bruce Perry for continuing to allow us to put on events on his property.

STPR® LLC continues to be efficiently run by the three managers, Lew Giesy, Meridith Croucher and Alan Smith. Each year they strive to make the Susquhannock Trail Performance Rally® a better event. Last year they had their second one day event in February,

unfortunately it doesn’t look like it is going to happen this year, but could possibly come back in the future.

This is a side note while I’m talking about STPR and the people involved.

Alan had the opportunity to celebrate his birthday today with a whole group of people, so I think we should all say “Happy Birthday, Alan!”

There are also people who are in the background helping keep the region running. Carl Dresie spends a lot of time putting Top End together each month. I have always felt, and continue to feel that the monthly newsletter is very important, and we continue to put out what I believe is one of the better ones in the country. MaryAnne Shults continues to keep our web page and all of our other social media up to date. The Solo board, the rally board and the club racing board (chaired by Fran McAllister) are always there to make sure each program continues to run well.

The bad news is that the race and Solo programs both had a deficient last year. I want the membership to be aware the board of directors is going to be looking a little closer at budgets this year and some of the things we have been taking for granted may not happen at these events.

I need to thank the board of directors for their support and help this year.

Carl, I appreciate everything you have done for the region and will continue to do.

This year looks like it is going to be another good year. Tom Weaver will be chairing the Solo program and Deb and Tom are continuing to not chair the rally program, at least through the remainder of this season. Tony Zanni is chairing the RallyCross program again this year and hopefully we will have a Street Survival School and that Dave Avery will continue chairing the event. I have yet to talk to Dave, but it is in writing here so it must be true.

We are going back to Nelson Ledges again this year. The Hoosier Tire Formula First Championship has put both of our regional races on their schedule again this year. We will be putting on three races this year with the addition of the BF Goodrich Tires Super Tour Glen National race at Watkins Glen. This event is a three day double event; and as the final Majors race in the Eastern Conference. I think, because of that, it might be one of the larger events in the country.

Next year’s board of directors is looking like it will be up to the challenge of running the region once again.

Rally Awards

TOM: I had a written version of my speech, but I left the blank paper at home.

There will be no weiner dog stories or submarine stories. (Some banter on submarine races and glare off of the top of heads.)

The rally program this year has been very successful, we had nine events. That places us as one of the most active rally regions in the United States. The Winter Series last year was very well attended and everybody had a good time. We had a few issues and a few cars were replaced at the end of the season with something new, unintentionally of course. The RallyCross program was very good with Tony Zanni doing a very good job. Tony couldn’t be here tonight and he sends his regrets. (Some banter on inspecting the bottom side of Chris Ciufo’s car.)

Alright, first up Tom Langdon will give us the winners in the RoadRally program.

Best Husband & Wife Team

The next award is the Ray and Fran Hicks Trophy for the best husband and wife team. Deb and I have received this award previously as have Alan and Amy Smith. This particular team rallied a number of years with someone else as navigator placing as high as maybe third.

Jamie Hayslip and Gretchen Kriesen did exceptionally well this year.

We have had a lot of help from a lot of people. The rally program, like a lot of other things in this region runs on volunteer help. A lot of very good workers, sitting alongside the road, freezing for a car every two to three minutes. Also, rallymasters spending a lot of time and gas money setting up events and a lot of people saying, “Tom, I’ll take care of that.”

I’m happy to see everyone here tonight and hope this is not the last time I see you this year. We have our monthly general membership meetings as well as our rally program with an event next week in Ithaca. Three races and hopefully eight Solos, so I hope to see all of you out there having fun, I know I will be.

Steve was one of our very active workers. Once again, I want to thank all of the workers that show up. The individual who we will recognize as Worker showed up and worked a lot of different things including winter rallies AND chaired the Charity Rally run as part of STPR. Kurt Thiel is Rally Worker of the Year. He took us to roads I didn’t know existed.

The next award is the Outstanding Rally Contributor. Rally as you know is a volunteer thing and sometimes twisting arms and saying please is not enough. We do have one individual when asked to do a second rally says “Oh, alright.” He is a go-to guy for a lot of things; our go-to guy is Alan Smith.

By the way that will be three winter rallies next year.

Solo Awards

JEFF: I see a bunch of the Solo program chairs in the audience tonight.

Last year I was kind of tricked into taking on the Solo program chairmanship after autocrossing for about five years. Until this year I’ve had the privilege of pretty much just showing up, rolling the car out of the trailer and taking part in great events. I had no idea how much work goes on behind the scenes to make it happen. In this region there are a small number of chiefs who make this monumental task happen. Each chief had their responsibilities locked down this year and all I had to do was show up and open the van for a great event.

Thanks to all the chiefs that made my job very easy.

Most Improved Driver

Our Most Improved Driver, Gillian Pielow, is not here tonight. After several years in the Novice class, this year she jumped into the Road Tire Stock class.

There were over forty competitors scoring points in two or more events, so Gillian had plenty of competition.

She made a significant improvement in reducing the time between her times and that of the top runners in Road Tire.

Best New Driver

Outstanding Rookie of the Year

We will start with the Outstanding Rookie of the Year. This driver started out the season in the novice class driving a car that pretty much looks like a big rust stain. He called it copper, but that is open to interpretation. Most people stay in the Novice class for a period of time, this competitor didn’t stay there the full season, jumping around into some of the classes with deeper talent.

Bob Day is our rookie of the year. This award is particularly noteworthy as it is the first time the region has ever given

SHAUN: I’ve only been doing this a few years and every year I keep telling myself I’m going to make the time and go to the Nationals. I never seem to make it, but every year I watch people from our region. It’s great to see people from our region get into the trophies.

The first award I will present is the Roger Clouser Memorial award for the Best New Driver. This award is given to the Finger Lakes Region driver who shows the greatest degree of promise during his first full season of competition. He shall also have been a credit to the region at the race course.

This year’s driver ran in SM, the most competitive class in SCCA. He was 13th in NYSRRC standings in eight events. He turned times at Watkins Glen that were in the range of those turned by experienced competitors. He shows the potential of being a national champion or a professional driver. One of the best new drivers that have come along in sometime, Daniel Thiel (Jr.). Elizabeth Thiel accepted for her son.

It has been rumored that Dan has been known to come into the pits after a race with signs of contact with other cars and the guard rail. Also, it is rumored that his father had a serious talk with him regarding this damage.

Most Improved Driver

The Most Improved Driver award is given to the Finger Lakes Region driver who has shown the greatest improvement during the season. Usually not awarded to a beginning driver who shows great promise but to a license holder whose improvement over the previous season has resulted in a greatly improved competition record. He shall have been a credit to the region on the race course. Awarded first in 1963 to R. Johnson. Previous winners have been Bruce Perry, Dave Ciufo, Michael Hausknecht and four different McAllisters.

This year’s recipient was Best New Driver in 1990, was always a top runner at the regional level, avoided confrontation on the track and has been a credit to the region. This year he competed in STL in national races placing 3rd in NEDiv out of 23 competitors. At the National Runoffs® he started seventh and finished seventh in STL. This year’s recipient is Steve Wheeler.

Driver of the Year

FRAN: The next award is the John and Emily Castle Trophy for the Driver of the Year. This recognizes the Finger Lakes Region driver who has compiled the most outstanding record in SCCA race participation. Caliber of races attended and competition in class are considered as well as record of success.

Again the recipient shall have been a credit to the region at the race course.

(Fran reviewed the highlights of the history of both John and Emily Castle.)

This award was first given to Gary Morgan in 1964. Following winners were John McGee, four times; Bob Henderson, four times; the Dennis brothers, six times; Bill Coykendall, 4 times. Others are Warren Agor, Lou Gigliotti, Eppie Wietze and Paul Miller.

This year’s recipient ran in SM, placing 9th in NYSRRC, won the Kryder cup, placed third in the Nelson Ledges National race and also ran in ITA. This year we recognize Dave Ciufo.

Special Region Awards

was the best new driver in 1978 and won the Top End award in 2011 and this year is awarded Mechanic of the Year.

Outstanding Worker, presented by Mike Toombs Awarded to the Finger Lakes Region member who has devoted a notable amount of his or her time as a worker at motorsports events sponsored or sanctioned by the region.

Primary consideration will be given to individuals who have worked in general worker categories, not as chiefs of specialties or as chairpersons of events, The individual must have worked in at least two different motorsports areas at least once, worked on at least one public service activity if the region conducted such and been a true credit to the region.

of sportsmanship throughout the year and whose participation in SCCA events has been a credit to the region. The term “Sportsmanship” implies that the award go to a true “sportsman” – one who competes in a race, Solo or rally seriously and who consistently places the ideals of sportsmanship above their own personal gain.

This person is someone who jumps in and helps, if someone has car issues. We autocrossed together for a year and after beating him at Rome there is a story to tell, he has improved. This year’s award goes to Dave Ciufo.

Mechanic of the Year, presented by Fran McAllister FRAN: This award was started by me in 1981 back when I owned an AAMCO transmission shop. It was started when I realized that there were more capable drivers than there were mechanics capable of building a winning car. Mechanic of the Year is awarded each year to a member in good standing who has worked without financial gain as a primary motive. Success of the supported team should be strongly considered. The winner should normally come from Club Racing, but mechanics who work on Solo or rally teams are not excluded. The winner shall be a credit to the sport. There shall be no repeat winners. Nominations should be made by the rally, Solo and competition boards and the Road Racing Drivers Club with final selection being made by the board of directors.

Carl Godwin wrote an article that was printed in a magazine that covers Alix’s history. The magazine went to Dave.

This particular person is not only a worker but a racer. He worked Tech, turned hamburgers, etc. The Outstanding Worker of the Year is Charlie Tanck.

Sportsmanship Award, the Alix Lafontant Trophy, presented by Mike Toombs Awarded to the member who has most consistently exhibited the attributes

Top End Award, presented by Mike Toombs Awarded to a region member who has made an outstanding contribution to the region and to motorsports in general. Service to the region can range from being part of a significant effort to provide events, to publicizing the region both within and outside the region, to assisting outside the normal activities of the region. There are two recipients this year.

The other recipient has done a lot for the newsletter and done a lot about keeping the membership up on the status of members who we don’t see much of now. Thanks to Bob Swinehart for his past and future efforts.

Finger Lakes Region Special Recognition Award, presented by Mike Toombs A special recognition award for the purpose of recognizing a member or members of the Region for recent recognizable efforts.

This award did not make it into the program for this evening’s festivities.

We recognize a person who spends a lot of time cussing me out. He has done a lot for the region in the past and is doing a lot for the region and the SCCA now.

We would like to take time to honor a region member and the current Area 10 director, John Walsh.

JOHN: I arrived on the SCCA board with no agenda, which is actually a really cool thing. I did not arrive with the agenda of “fixing” a lot of things, a “babe in the woods.” That allowed me to see a lot of elements of this club without a bias. The amazing thing about 12

There are a lot of names on the trophy of people who have done a lot of stuff for the club. It is always difficult to find a recipient, not because nothing is done, but because there are a lot of people who have done a lot for the region. After asking this person to do something for me a couple of years ago, he has become super involved. He is serving on the board, has chaired races the past two years and is doing so again this year.

The July race at Watkins Glen this year should be a challenge. This person has stepped up and pushed back against any complacency I’ve developed over the past ten years on the board. I would like to introduce our outstanding contributor for 2012, Chris DeMinco.

There are a lot of cool things about how this club works. My message is don’t be afraid to take a leadership positions in this club. It will naturally lead you in the right direction. Whether it is as a race steward, Solo chair or rally chair.

It should be noted that the region has between five and eight percent of the national rally entries. I would like to thank all of the active people in the region who put in their efforts. So thank you very much.

MIKE: I just tell John that the second term will be easier.

Outstanding Contribution to the Region the George B. Merwin Trophy, presented by Mike Toombs Awarded to the member who has contributed the most to the region during the past year. All areas of the club activities are taken into account – racing, rallying, concours, publicity, community service, etc. Participation is considered as well as working. The recipient should represent the best the region has to offer the sport. This is the region’s highest honor.

I thought there were a lot of other people who worked their tails of a lot harder than I have, whether it’s Bruce Perry doing Tech, or Mike (how many years have you been RE? – talk about stupid), John Walsh has already been recognized. But Lew (Giesy) you’re older than dirt and you are still doing it. God Bless you! These people in this region are great. You surprised me, this is an honor, but heavens forbid there are a lot of people that work a lot harder than I do. Maybe some of you don’t, maybe you should work a little harder and help out. So God bless everybody!

MIKE: Tom (Langdon), if you retire and don’t find a replacement, the rally program will no longer exist. So everyone, please feel free to ask if there is anything you can do to help. You may not be chairman, only the person standing on the corner.

Rally Tom Langdon Interim Rally Chair

Rally Meeting Notes January 15, 2013 96 Church Street, Victor, NY

These notes are grouped by subject, not in chronological order.

The following nine RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jamie Hayslip, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon, Alan Smith, John Werner and Tony Zanni.

RallyCross The last two RallyCross events in the Finger Lakes series are scheduled for Jan. 26 and Feb. 23.

Tony has trophies for the series winners.

Early registration for the “Ithaca Winter Rally” indicates that there will be a good turnout with several national level teams participating.

There will not be a Finger Lakes Region Winter Rally Series event on Feb. 2. The Ohio Winter rally will be run on that weekend.

“Cabin Fever,” the Feb. 16 rally is coming along fine. Jamie will need a safety check. The rally length, including transit zones is nearly 200 miles. The starting location is in Charlie Riedel’s in Canandaigua, ending at Cheap Charlie’s in Bloomfield. Additional information is in the flyer found in Top End and on www.flr-scca.com.

“WWR2013,” scheduled for Mar. 2 will start and end at The Yard of Ale in Piffard. At the request of the Yard, it will end earlier in the evening. Plans are to have “first car off” at 4:30. More information is available from Tom Langdon and John Werner (flybrick@ frontiernet.net / (585) 223-2036).

Rick Barnes is working on a rally for Mar. 16. This would be the last rally in the Winter Rally Series. Because of the

possibility of soft, muddy roads it would be a primarily tarmac event. Start and finish locations have not been set.

“Absolute Zero” will run in the Tug Hill plateau area on Mar. 9. This may be an invitation only event.

Winter Series trophies are glasses with series information silk screened onto the glass designed by Tony Zanni.

The color will be changed to red for next year’s series.

Miscellaneous Discussions Course closing DID have something to do during “The Long Way Home” due to failure to incorporate changes, hooking pavement edges, finding holes, miss set clocks, etc. This year’s version of the rally is the source of a number of stories.

Slow leg speeds in a rally can be offset by short times from a checkpoint to the out marker. A mile in a minute can prove interesting.

The technic for making handbrake turns and the inability to do so because of the location of the brake and the continued operation of the cars were discussed.

A bicycle computer could be adapted for TSD rally use.

The last Saturday of the month is being requested for dates in the 2013-14 series. November and December dates will be earlier in the month.

Tony has budget information that will be rolled into the rally budget. He will generate a volunteer incentive.

STPR® The Susquhannock Trail Performance Rally ® is the weekend of the first Saturday in June. For 2013 that puts it on May 31 and June 1.

Rochester and Wellsboro meetings have been set and are published in the Top End calendar.

Winter Rally Series The general instructions will be updated to indicate that the use of a smart phone for more than it’s clock

GPS units will measure distances accurately, therefore their use will put the team in the limited class.

Welded differentials, both rear and center, can help in straight line acceleration but have a detrimental impact on cornering ability.

Some stories have not been reported to protect the “innocent.”

Again the meeting was devoid of any discussion of wiener dogs and submarines. (Well almost!)

The Long Way Home January 5, 2013

The fourteenth version of the Long Way Home was held on Jan. 5. 17 teams competed, which is down from recent years, but I will attribute that to people being busy and the recent holiday season.

Unfortunately, I had come down with a “bug” about a week before the event and that made it quite a challenge to do all the finalization required. It wasn’t until Friday evening before the event that I was able to drive the route again.

We had some spectacular snow in the weeks before the event and I was hoping for challenging conditions.

Unfortunately, there is a short section of “Seasonal” road that goes straight down a hill for a couple tenths of a mile that I have used many times without much issue. However his year, when I arrived at that section, I only saw a couple of Amish buggy tracks down the road. I did drive it and had to work very hard to get DOWN the hill, but hoped that my “trail breaking” would make the road passable. I made the loop the long way “around the block” to create the alternate route instructions and arrived at the top of the hill again. Well, …. the second trip down the hill was as much work as the first time. Knowing that I have more ground clearance in 14

the Outback than most; alternate routes it was.

The rest of the route check went smoothly until I reached the infamous “Mudville Road” with the train tunnel.

This is another road that doesn’t always get plowed (so partying kids cannot “escape” out the other end, so I am told). I was excited with the conditions when it was narrowly plowed all the way through the tunnel and across the one lane bridge, but then it stopped and there was a 3 foot pile of snow on the road.

No way for me or anyone else to get through. Luckily, this one was an easier re-route and only required an odometer adjustment and a right at crossroad.

Disappointing, but sometimes too much snow is a bad thing.

Rally night was clear and cold, but with no falling snow to add to the driving challenge. However, as with any rally, there are always a few stories that come out of the “adventure”. One team did slide gently off the road before checkpoint one, but was easily tugged back onto the road and scored well at check point one with an appropriately used TA. There was a bambi that has sore knees in the southern tier after being “nudged”. One oil pan lost a battle with a rock after the team “ditch hooked” too far and another team “forgot” about the second re-route and tried the “Mudville Road”. Their mistake became obvious once they reached the 3 foot snow bank, and in their haste to return to the proper course, they high centered on a smaller snow bank and required some assistance from our skilled sweep team.

Results are posted online and elsewhere in this issue on Top End. As with all of these events, there is no way that they could be run without lots of dedicated workers. I would like to thank Tom Langdon for doing Tech and the Novice class, Deb Langdon for helping with registration. Living up to its name – Winter Rally One Report

At a total of 197 miles, the “Long Way Home” Winter TSD rally lived up to its name. Starting out at the familiar Yard of Ale in Piffard, N.Y. the kick-off event of the Finger Lakes SCCA Winter Rally Series saw a lot of old friends and new faces show up to run and work.

Rallymaster Alan Smith and selfdescribed rally widow Amy Smith were running registration and getting people settled in their pre-rally rituals. The Grand Pooh-Bah of Rally, Tom Langdon was helping out with tech while last minute changes to in-car lighting and snack placement were taking place outside. Inside new teams and navigators were furiously highlighting and making notes in their route books, in hopes of being at the right place at the right time.

After all the highlighters were put down, times figured out, car numbers given, the competitors were off. Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber in the “GT BA” Eagle Talon were car number 1, showing the rest of the Equipped class how it’s done. One new team out there this year was that of father and son, Karl and Jacob Haltiner, of course in dad’s WRX. Another family team, Dan and Anna Thiel made their return Continued page 16

The Long Way Home Results,

to the Winter Series in the coolest of the winter rally cars, a fully prepped Volvo 240 which had the best sound of any car in the field. Dan’s brother Kurt showed up in his wife’s Audi A40 wagon. He quickly showed by example why you shouldn’t take your wife’s car on a winter rally, as a rock put a hole in the oil pan and an end to his night, but hopefully not his marriage. Kurt and codriver, Dave McArthur, did make it back to the Yard of Ale with a little help from our sweep team of Rick Barnes and that other person in his Mountaineer.

Everyone was anticipating the return of the yellow Honda CRX of Rich Smith and Tony Zanni, however it was discovered that it had been replaced with a black one that they paid $200 dollars for. Although not fully prepped like the yellow one, the black one came with a fuel leak. The spokes-person for the PT Rally Camp said that although Rich wasn’t affected, Tony spent the next five days walking into walls and staring blankly out the window due to the fumes. Other teams also experienced some bad luck. Ben and Pamela Gilmore, our newly wed team, not only found a ditch before the first checkpoint but also had their car visited by a deer later in the evening. If she stays with you after going into a ditch, Ben, it must be meant to be.

Alan Smith always puts together a good route. This year was no exception, however one of our favorite roads, Mudville, had to be bypassed because of the big snow we had. Even with the route glitch, it was still a great event.

Somewhere in the 197 miles, Jim Perrin and Lee McElhinny didn’t get in a fist fight, or end up in a ditch, Jamie Hayslip and Gretchen Kriesen, only used one TA, and blamed one another for having to use it. And a pair of Mikes got lost on the Mudville Road (Mike McGinnis and Mike Harvey).

The familiar faces of Roy Hopkins and Adrian Hughes took advantage of Alan’s rally to do some Targa Training in their ‘merican themed Dodge Neon.

This fact is only assumed as Targa Newfoundland Rally is in Canada so it must be snowy there all the time. George Modlin and Shaun Hallam were back in their Suzuki SX4 to prove that TSD

Rally has nothing to do with horsepower.

Only thing they proved was that their car was Red. Jerry Kerwin took time off from sending car porn to all his friends to show off his EVO 10. He and Frank Beyer decided to enter the Equipped class at the last minute. We can only assume that Frank shares the same love for math as Zanni.

Some new faces came out to the “Long Way Home.” Performance Rally driver Greg Healey, and co-driver, Tina Massa made the trip from where they live. Another father/son team, Dave and Neil Guertin, made it out from the land known for the Morgan Horse; they brought about 192 of them in their BMX 325ix. Other people I never encountered at a winter rally include Evan Brent, and Scott Mason, in a Slowbaru WRX, Steve and Jeff Coppola in another Subaru entry. The night’s favorite new comers were the father/daughter team of Larry and Jessie Roland in a Ford Focus.

These two had more fun out there than any other team. Even with a last place finish overall they still came in first in Novice with huge smiles and big laughs at the bar.

Snowy roads, tricky check points and twisty roads made for a great event.

Alan Smith even made it to the end, after being sick for the entire week leading up to it. An update for those at the event, Zanni, still has a girlfriend after doing the first winter rally on his birthday. She is questioning his relationship with Rich Smith at this point though. Thanks again to the Yard of Ale, all the workers even that other guy in the Mountaineer, Jason Kostyshak, and our fearless rallymaster Alan Smith for one of the longest events of the season.

RallyCross Series Ramblings

Ok so it’s been a while since I’ve done a story for the rally cross series. There’s a good reason, I’ve been on a bender lately.

A root beer bender maybe. But anyway, there have been results posted from past

events, but no one has heard any of the stories but through hear-say and nay-say so lets set the record straight.

In august, Jeremy Keck almost drove off that big bridge on Rt. 15, on his way home to Wellsboro, PA, after losing to Brandon West by .09 seconds.

Chris Ciufo didn’t put enough air in the tires of his super fancy JDM - 1 of only 7(rumored) in the country - ‘91 Subaru Legacy. Ryan Kolupa didn’t say a word the entire event. Katie Marks couldn’t stop smiling. Michelle Richau thought about driving, and Charlie Tameris drove a Porsche 944 with a sweet paint job. Jim Perrin laughed at someone.

In September, Tony Zanni, Ryan Hallock and Erik Voekle did their best to destroy Erik’s Buffalo defending Dodge Neon. Ryan broke the exhaust, Erik popped a tire, and Tony set it on fire. There really isn’t anything else to say about that day. Flames 5-8 feet out the back of the Neon on Tony’s last run, as the exhaust melted through the power steering, and vacuum lines. Epic.

In October Captain Chaos showed up and drove a CRX. Then it rained. A bearded lady that looked like Jeremy Keck also showed up and drove a Subaru like a lady. Michelle Richau drove a Wagon of Doom. Chris DeMinco showed up with his car dressed like something from Mad Max, and drove it backwards. Jim Perrin came dressed as a “Ginger” and actually drove his Wagon of Doom. Chris Thompson came out of retirement. Rich Smith proved black CRXs are faster than yellow CRXs. And Nate Michals won his first event.

November brought the return of Ben Gilmore, in a Neon. He presumably won the event but with a shortened course and a lazy time keeper. Who’s to say? Jeremy Keck headed for a bridge embankment on the way home after being beat by a 2WD car. Thankfully he missed the embankment. Jim Perrin drove the Team Hazard Rally Jeep, sideways.

Ryan Kolupa said his first words at a RallyCross after seeing Chris Ciufo roll his super fancy - 1 of 7 in the country - ‘91 Subaru Legacy. Best part of the story, it was his second date with Kathryn Chapman, who was beating him in his own car. What more can I say.

February 2013

December was supposed to be cold and frozen. It was the opposite, cold, wet and muddy. Kurt Thiel brought the Toyota Celica, from the August 2011 Top End story, back to life, and won the event. Eric Winters drove a CRX, Tony Zanni should have driven the wCRX but was pissed at the weather. Charlie Tameris taught us what wheel spin is.

Jake Vallee bought a Subaru, and is now

selling it because he got beat by a 2WD car. Kevin Shepard got a rock stuck up Subaru STI and enjoyed himself on the way home. Darren Ohara came in last.

Hopefully January will be cold and snowy, and frozen. It’s been a long season, two more events, and the championship is coming down to the wire. Jeremy, since he kept in on the

road, had a narrow lead over Brandon West going into the last two events.

Other people could also win if they steal Jeremy’s tires, and pepper spray Brandon West right before their runs.

To that I say good luck. Drive Fast & Take Chances.
