REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive

Thanksgiving weekend found Marsha and me at the New York State Road Racing Championship banquet at Watkins Glen International. We had the honor of accepting some awards for Finger Lakes Region drivers and witnessing other region drivers getting their well-deserved awards. Those winning awards were James Tyo in Club Ford, John Morris in Improved Touring A, Dan Thiel was second in Improved Touring B, Dave Ciufo second in SM, and Mike Hausknecht first in Spec Racer Ford with Chris Pluta second. There was a close battle in the top ten drivers with Mike Hausknecht beating out Charlie Campbell from the MoHud Region by one point. Also finishing in the top ten from our region were Chris Pluta who was tied for fifth and Dave Ciufo finishing eighth. Special awards were given out to several region members as well. Mike Meyers won the Best New Driver award and Mike Hausknecht won the Driver of the Year Award. The Finger Lakes Region won the NYSRRC Inter Regional Award; I was happy to receive that award. All in all, Finger Lakes Region drivers had a good season. Now for some sad news - Judy Dennis, former Regional Executive, region board member, NYSRRC 4

administrator and National Registrar passed away Dec. 5. Judy did a lot for the region, SCCA and anyone who asked for her help. Marsha and I will miss her as a friend and the region will miss her 40 years of service. This year has been tough for the SCCA family in Upstate New York. I made mention of the year-end banquet in my column last month. I would like to expand on what I said. The board decided we would subsidize the cost of the banquet and would charge $25 for adults and $15 for children. We always take this time to celebrate another year; we offer our congratulations to members in all areas of participation. We also offer thanks to the members who have been in the club and made it what it is. So I need your help – I need you to come to the event and have a good time. This month I seem to be jumping all over the place. Every month I wonder how people write columns for newspapers every day. I find that sometimes I forget what I wanted to say until after Top End is published. The new Director for Area 10 took office on Jan 1. John Walsh has taken over the reigns from John Sheridan. I have gotten to know both Walsh and Sheridan well in the past few years. John Sheridan helped me a lot when I first became Regional Executive and there were some concerns with our LLC. Since then I have turned to him with questions more than once and have gotten sage advice. John Walsh has some big shoes to step into; he follows a long line of people who have taken it upon themselves to be members of the SCCA Board of Directors. Having worked with John Walsh on the regional level, I know that he is up to it. I would like to thank both John’s for their service to the club and for their help. On that note I think I’ll stop writing now and send this to Carl. See you at the banquet!

Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes December 7, 2010 Location: Burgundy Basin Inn, 1361 Marsh Road, Pittsford, New York 14534 Regional Executive Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:20 p.m. The following are arranged by topic and may not be in chronological order. The December issue of Top End had not reached a number of members by the time of the December meeting. Therefore the approval of the November 2, 2010, General Membership Meeting minutes will be approved at the January meeting. Activities – Barb Lissow The Year-End Banquet will be held at the Burgundy Basin Inn on January 29, 2011. Cost will be $25 per person. Information and a reservation form will printed in the January issue of Top End. In addition to the region awards, high points will be awarded. High points information will be printed in the January issue of Top End. Both are on the FLR website, www.flr-scca.com. Rotating trophies need to be returned to John Walsh. The auto show will be the end of February – beginning of March. Barb will have more information later. Membership Report Charles Tanck will be fulfilling the remaining year of Scott Moller’s term on the Board of Directors. Scott has resigned as a board member to take the position Assistant Regional Executive. Thirteen members were present for the General Membership meeting. Membership was down 18 from last month to 470.

Chairs are needed for the Glen National and Fun One races at Watkins Glen International. The WGI contracts have been received and deposits are due by April 1. Westward Ho The board made the decision to conduct Westward Ho in 2011 on May 14-15 contingent on the inclusion of the Formula First group. There are no Great Lakes Division conflicts with this date; it does follow a driver’s school held the week before.

Judy Dennis passed away on Dec. 5. During her 40 years as a Finger Lakes Region member, Judy served in a number of roles including 15 years as Chief Registrar for Finger Lakes. Chris Bucknam recounted his experience as Solo Chairman and the support given by Judy, including the making of flags. This is one of many stories about Judy. Mike Toombs noted that she started him on the path that led to being Regional Executive. Old Business The Mini-Con was a great success. Thanks to Elizabeth Thiel for a job well done. Due to her efforts, we will not lose as much money as we could have. The Competition Clinic was well attended. John Walsh put together a good set of seminars. The speaker on engine preparation could have taken up a full day. Attendance was more than expected. Race Report The Finger Lakes Region was awarded the Inter Region Award at the NYSRRC banquet. The region will be going with MotorsportsReg for race registration. This service will be at no charge for all but online credit card payments. The service can also be used for Rally and Solo events.

2011 January

Rally Report The RoadRally/RallyCross Awards and Christmas party is set for Saturday, Dec. 11, at Cheap Charlie’s in Bloomfield. Alan Smith is taking reservations. Jim Perrin would like to step down as RallyCross chairman. A successor needs to be named if a RallyCross series is to run in 2011. The RallyCross chair does not need to chair the events, but someone to complete the paperwork is required. The Winter Rally Series starts on Jan. 8, with “Is This A Road” chaired by Cory Kuhns and Marnie Soom. The start and finish is at MacGregor’s in Canandaigua. Registration opens at 3:00 p.m. First car off at 4:31. Workers are needed, contact Cory or Marnie. (See the flyer on page 5.) The second event is “The Long Way Home ‘11” with rallymaster Alan Smith writing his usual great event. This rally will be part of the WINTR series. (Flyers for these events will be in the January issue of Top End and www.flr-scca.com/rally/2011. Ed.) The February rallies are “The Ithaca Rally” with rallymasters Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber on Feb. 5 and an event on the Feb. 19. These will be split by a coefficient 2 performance rally on the Waste Management Site organized by the STPR® committee. This will be a oneday event. More information to come. Solo Report – Brian Buchman We will not be hosting a national Solo event at the Seneca Army Depot in the coming year. Approval to use the site had not been received in time to put an event on the schedule. The use of SeAD during 2011 has not been resolved. Attendance at the Solo nationals requires competition in a national or tour event, not a Solo Pro. A “Thruway Series” has been discussed with Western New York, Finger Lakes and Central New York. Nothing has been finalized. The Solo program needs to start putting effort into defining sites and a series. The rental cost of Rochester Institute of Technology is prohibitive. 5

Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel Elizabeth reported on the amount in the checking account as reported in the Nov. 30 bank statement. Another $1000 or so has been paid since then. The charges for the Mini-Con are included. Financial details are available from Elizabeth. All bills have been paid. The use of our debit card without a pin number led to confusion when paying the bill for the Mini-Con. A cashier’s check solved the problem. Other Mini-Con bills for NEDiv and the Competition Clinic have yet to be resolved. Weekend membership, etc., bills have been received. The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by the membership present. The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m. on a motion by John Walsh, seconded by Marnie Soom. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary Bench Racing An ice Solo, similar to the ice racing series, was raised as a possible winter event. Whether the quality of the band or the cold weather was the reason, a band playing at another function while an ice Solos was being run didn’t sound all that great. It was decided that Andy Smith was not doing donuts in the parking lot. He may be a good driver, but he was under one of the tables. The efforts of the National Race Committee were bypassed. The comments by Mike Toombs at the MiniCon on the reasons for folding NESCCA into NEDiv created quite a debate at the Sunday meeting. There was a surprising amount of support. The SCCA National mailing list includes only those who are regular members; spouse and family members are not on that list.

Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

Cost for the banquet will be $25 per person. A flyer will be printed in the January issue of Top End.

December 6, 2010

Charles Tanck will be asked to serve the remaining portion of Scott Moller’s term. Scott is resigning his position as a board member to take the office of Assistant Regional Executive.

Location: 753 Klem Rd., Webster, NY Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:50 p.m. Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; John Walsh, Assistant Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Barbara Lissow, Activities Director; Dave Ciufo, Scott Moller and John Morris, Directors. Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order. The minutes of the Oct. 26, 2010, board of directors meeting were approved on a motion by John Walsh seconded by Scott Moller. Activities Report – Barb Lissow The Year-End Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at the Burgundy Basin Inn. Awards will include membership and High-Points awards. High points information will be printed in the January issue of Top End and on www.flr-scca.com.

New Business The date and location of the Roundtable is changing.

The national convention registration for Mike Brunner and Tina Reeves will be subsidized. Old Business The Mini-Con went very well. Top End printing and mailing costs need to be reviewed with FedEx Office. Race Report The national office has contracted with MotorsportsReg for race and event registration. The cost will only be for credit card payments made through MotorsportsReg. Participation information will be provided to the national office. The program has additional features that appeal to the registrars. The other provider is DLB who will charge $150 per event.

January 2011

An agreement made at the Mini-Con was to go with the same registration program, the one that will be used by the Glen Region. MotorsportsReg will be available for Solo and Rally. The use of MotorsportsReg was approved on a motion by Scott Moller, seconded by John Walsh. Marsha Toombs has been appointed Region Chief of Registration. Mike Toombs will be registrar for the Glen National, Marsha Toombs for the Fun One. Race chairs are needed for the Glen National and the Fun One. Contracts for the Watkins Glen International events have been received. Deposits are due April 1. Westward Ho The dates for Westward Ho will be May 14 and 15 pending the dates available for a participating series. Rally Report Meridith Croucher will be at the December board meeting to review the planned STPR® (un-named) coefficient 2 event on the Waste Management site scheduled for Feb. 12. STPR® committee meetings have been scheduled.

The current RallyCross administrator, Jim Perrin, is resigning. A replacement has not been named. Flyers for the January 8 and January 15 RoadRallys have been printed in the December issue of Top End. Solo Report The Solo program is in the middle of the winter hiatus. Not much is happening. Solo awards and RIT have been paid. We have not heard on any decision by the Seneca County Development Corporation. Because of the delay, no national tour event was scheduled for SeAD (and the Finger Lakes Region). Follow-up with the development committee is needed. Cost of repairing the sealer between the blocks in the concrete area is part of the issue. We have offered to share the cost. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel The Profit & Loss by Class statement for Jan. 1 through Dec. 6 was presented for review. Not all of the transactions were included as the transactions for the Mini-Con are not all completed. The adjustments received from the accountant also need to be entered into the P&L statement. Expenses for speakers, etc. at the Mini-Con have not all been received. Money for several sponsorships has not come in. The bills for NEDiv speakers, etc. need to go out. The Mini-Con will show a loss, but less than previous due to sponsorships, etc. The checking and investment account transaction information has been received.

From the editor’s bench

The change in printers has allowed us to go full color on for the Top End. Currently we have only used that feature on the outer front and back cover. Paperweight and surface are also changes that are available. Comments and suggestion on the use of these features are welcome. The downside to this change has been a slowdown in delivery of Top End. This could be a problem with printing, but is more likely a problem with distribution (Post Office). More information is needed. I would like to not change the current issue preparation schedule. The schedule is as follows: 1.) Delivery to the printers 15 days before the next monthly meeting. That is Monday. 2.) Assembly of the issue Saturday and Sunday prior. 3.) All articles edited and prepared for assembly Wednesday through Friday. All material for inclusion needs to be available Tuesday through Thursday. To meet that deadline, submissions should be made by the 12th of the month.

Remembering Judy Dennis (Fleming, McAllister)

December 5, 2010. Predeceased by her husband, George; brother, Jim Fleming; granddaughter, Jayne Girven. She is survived by her children, Lynn (Don) Girven, Shawn McAllister Ruddell, Mark (Chris) McAllister, Scott (Jennifer) McAllister; grandchildren, Anne, Christine and Maureen. Judy joined the Finger Lakes Region and SCCA in early 1970, with club and Pro racing as her listed areas of interest. During her 40 years as an active member of the region she served as Regional Executive ('86), Secretary ('73 and '77), Activities Director ('84), Director ('85, '87-'88, '96-'97), Top End editor ('80, '82-'83), race chair ('83, '84, '86, '88. 06, '07) and region registrar ('95 - '10). As the region's chief of registration she held a national Registrar's license. Judy also served as coordinator of the New York State Road Racing Series. Many a region member has a story to tell about Judy and her influence on him/her and the region. We all will miss her. A Memorial Service was held Friday, December 10, 2010 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 1130

Webster Road, Webster, NY 14580. Donations may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

From the family

By Chris McAllister: Judy considered SCCA her second family and truly loved spending time with her many close friends over the past 40 years - friendships her children appreciated so much on behalf of their mother and thank all her SCCA friends for. Judy was the only family member among her husbands and children (and all but one in-law kid) not to race, but was the most ardent fan of her family of racers. Never an event went by that she wasn't calling and checking on her kid’s results - and passionately expressing her joy or frustration, depending on the outcome. I remember one of my first SCCA events when Mark had an incident in the 90 at The Glen...before he was even out of his car, Judy was there. After a brief check to see that he was OK, as a mom would, she immediately asked when he would be back on the track, as a fan would! She could always be found with a smile at registration, especially if you brought her a sweet treat as an incentive to overlook a late registration fee. So many racers have crossed Judy's path over the last four decades, and she was so familiar with these drivers' lives and racing careers! Many times she could be heard wondering why she hadn't received an entry from a regular...and worrying why! I remember overhearing many long phone conversations from late entries or last minute cancellations, conversations where one minute was SCCA business and the remainder was just "chatting". She never criticized or chastised fellow SCCA members, a trait that is to be much admired. SCCA, and Finger Lakes Region especially, lost a great worker, fan, friend, and family member. We are all a bit better for having had Judy in our lives.

National News Mazda & Honda Unveil B-Spec Racers For SCCA Club Racing ORLANDO, Fla. (Dec. 15, 2010) – With the goal of providing close racing in affordable cars from a variety of manufacturers, Honda and Mazda jointly announced the formation of “B-Spec” Showroom Stock racing. Honda Performance Development, the racing arm of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.; and MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development, the performance division of Mazda North American Operations, unveiled their entries for the proposed new low-cost B-Spec, developed from the MAZDA2 and Honda Fit at last week’s Performance Racing Industry show in Orlando, Fla. B-Spec refers to all cars meeting a common set of rules that can be adopted by any race circuit or sanctioning organization.

Together, Honda and Mazda solicited an independent body to develop a set of vehicle specifications that will be available for all to use – the motorsports equivalent of “freeware.” The final rules should be ready for release within 60 days. Both the B-Spec Honda Fit and MAZDA2 will be eligible for 2011 SafeRacer SCCA National Club Racing events in the H Production (HP) and Super Touring Under (STU) classes, and for regional races in HP and STU and the ITE class. Beginning in 2012, the cars will run in Showroom Stock C One of the fastest-growing segments of the automobile business, B-segment cars are among the most affordable, and enjoy great support from younger demographics. In addition to the MAZDA2 and the Honda Fit, the category includes the Chevrolet Aveo, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris. Two prototypes for the class – a MAZDASPEED-run MAZDA2 and a

Honda Fit, prepared and entered by Team Honda Research-West – debuted at last weekend’s 25 Hours of Thunderhill seasonending NASA endurance racing contest in Willows, CA. Designed to be an entry-level category, BSpec cars will feature showroom stock racing cars utilizing stock engines and chassis, fitted with a competition roll cage, racing seat and other safety equipment; and manufacturerapproved suspension components, tires and wheels. Weight distribution will be used to balance performance among competing manufacturers. The manufacturers will use an independent third party to homologate competing cars and provide equalized specifications to any interested sanctioning bodies or race tracks. A racer who builds a B-Spec car will be able to race the same car across multiple sanctioning bodies by simply changing the sanctioning-body decals. Only homologated OEM models will be eligible within the rules. This is intended to be a grassroots class of racing, and at present, there are no plans for a B-Spec professional series. Quotes: Jeff Dahnert, SCCA President & CEO – “We’re very intrigued by the collaboration of Honda and Mazda on a common rule set for these sub-compact market cars. It’s often perceived that manufacturers are seeking any advantage possible over their competition, but this effort is proof that rivals can work together toward a common goal—one that will likely be attractive to many of SCCA’s members. We look forward to seeing these cars in National competition in 2012” In addition to the four confirmed participants, others have been involved in the discussion with an eye to joining the B-Spec ranks in 2011 or 2012. Ron Stukenberg, Senior Manager, Motorsports, Nissan North America noted that “Nissan Motorsports is very interested in the B Spec program and is closely evaluating it for possible future Versa entrants. The concept of cost-effective, entry-level sedan racing is certainly a great way to hone a driver’s motor-racing skills and hearkens back to the days of our involvement with the BRE 510. In the next few months, Nissan Motorsports should be in a position to finalize our intentions in this new class.”
