REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive Another year has come and gone. I keep wondering if the next year will be better for the club than the last. Last year we organized two races at Watkins Glen. With all of the possible problems of putting on a race, the SCCA bureaucracy and dealing with a large business like Watkins Glen International, I believe that both races went well. We ran our Winter Rally Series with good turnouts at each event. Our Solo program put on another stellar season. Let’s not forget about out RallyCross program; they have had some issues, namely inclement weather and poor attendance, but we are looking forward to an improving 2012 season. So things have been going along well and we now need to celebrate. So I hope that everyone will come to the Annual Awards Banquet. As I noted last month we have separated the awards banquet from membership recognition.
PROVIDING THE RACING COMMUNITY WITH INSURANCE AND DISABILITY INCOME FOR OVER 40 YEARS. 4
The NYSRRC banquet was held at Watkins Glen International over Thanksgiving weekend. There were quite a few Finger Lakes members present and who received recognition. James Tyo won NCF with 67 points. Mike Meyers won Formula Mazda. Mike competed in three NYSRRC weekends at two different tracks and accumulated 102 points. Bruce Perry placed second in Improved Touring A; He finished the season with 118. Chris Pluta won Spec Racer Ford with a total of 84 points. Mary Hartman finished in second place in Showroom Stock C with 62 points. Charles Tanck finished third in Showroom Stock C with 40 points. The Inter-Region award was presented to the Mohawk-Hudson Region for their drivers accumulating the most points during the season. The weather has been quite something so far this November and December. I was reading in the paper that we have only had 2.1" of snow so far in December. Now for those of that don’t know, I live less than a half mile of the Rochester airport. I can’t remember seeing any more than one or two dustings and have trouble figuring out where they got 2.1". We set a record last December with 45.6" of snow, assuming we got 2.1 at the airport this December; we are far short of what we had last year. I started working the winter road rallies the winter after Marsha and I joined the region and have worked pretty much every year since. Over the years I have seen different weather conditions, but I don’t think I have seen this little snow this late in the season. Of course I’m writing this on the 15th of December, but I wonder if we will have any snow
by the first rally on the 8th of January. I know that the competitors will be disappointed if we don’t have a foot or more of new snow on that weekend, here’s hoping. The National Race Committee (NRC) has been getting some email from drivers complaining about the National race schedule next year. As I stated before, there will only be one double National next year and it won’t be at Watkins Glen International. A lot of drivers are disappointed in the NRC for not scheduling a double at WGI. I don’t see this changing at this point, the schedule has changed at the NEDiv spring convention before, but I wouldn’t count on it happening this time. I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season and is ready to get going for the upcoming year. We are trying new and different ideas this year and we can’t wait to see you at an event! Until next month, Mike
Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes December 6, 2011 Location: Burgundy Basin Inn, 1361 Marsh Road, Pittsford, New York 14534 Regional Executive Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:10 p.m. Twenty-five members attended the Solo and general membership meetings. The following is arranged by topic and is not in chronological order. The November general membership meeting minutes are being held until the January meeting, as the December issue of Top End delivery has been slow.

Membership Report – Mike Brunner Mike reported that the region currently has 414 members, down 22 since Nov. 1. The total loss since April 2011 has been 38. New Business A memorial service will be held for Jean Morris on Dec. 7. Shirley VanNostrand, Central New York Region, passed away on Dec. 2. Mary Hartman noted that Club Race drivers will be required to wear head restraint devices starting next year. A demonstration is scheduled for the Roundtable in March. A demonstration by Driving Impressions is tentatively scheduled for February. Mike Toombs showed an item from the SCCA merchandise supplier with the Finger Lakes Region logo. The selection of what you can buy with the logo is somewhat limited. Race Report John Walsh reported that a new National class, STL, will be open to Miatas. the short course on Sunday. All other sessions on Sunday would be long course. We have declined for 2012 due to overtime and the increased costs vs. the increased entry fees. We will revisit the issue for 2013 depending upon the status of the Historic Race Group. Westward Ho! Lew Giesy will be chair for the June 23-24 event at Nelson Ledges. A committee is looking at what can be included in the weekend that will increase participation. It will be part of both the Kryderacing and NYSRRC series. Rally Report – Alan Smith The Rally Christmas and Awards party was held last Saturday night (Dec. 3) at Cheap Charlie’s. A good time was had by most (read all). Cheap Charlie’s is willing to have rallies start and end there on Saturday nights. John Walsh noted that the Finger Lakes Region is responsible for 10 percent of entries in all SCCA RoadRally events. STPR® A Wellsboro organizational meeting was held Nov. 19; the first Rochester meeting is scheduled for Dec. 7. The Waste Management Winter Rally is scheduled for Feb. 11, 2012. The stages will be split to offer eight shorter stages. Plans are to plow the course. RallyCross The Nov. 12 RallyCross was an evening/night event, with 16 competitors entered. The next RallyCross event is scheduled for Dec. 10 at Perry’s park. (Note: It was cancelled due to field conditions. Ed.) 2012 Winter Series "The Long Way Home" is the first event in the series and is scheduled for January 7 with Alan Smith as rallymaster. The starting location is the Yard of Ale in Piffard. This event will again be part of the WINTR (Winter INTernational Rally
series.) This series has been cut to four events centered in the Northeast. The second event will be “The Ithaca Winter Rally” with Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber as organizers. Rallymasters have volunteered for the third and last events, we are still in need of a rallymaster for the fourth event. Solo Report – Brian Buchman The 2012 Solo schedule is being coordinated with Western New York. Dates are being set up and event sites are being investigated. A proposal for changes in classing and scoring is being circulated on the Solo Yahoo site and among the active soloists for comment. Mike Toombs noted that this was Brian Buchman’s last Solo report. Brian has served as Solo chair for the last three years. Jeff Colegrove has accepted the position starting Jan. 2012. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel Elizabeth reported that the bank and investment statements were received today. The deposit for Nelson Ledges has been paid along with a deposit for the Awards Banquet, the website and a Fun One refund. Payments for the Rally Christmas party, the last Solo site rental and additional payment to the Burgundy Basin Inn for the Awards Banquet have been paid but not yet recorded. The deposit for the Solo awards picnic is included in the monies received. The financial statements are available for review by request through Elizabeth. The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by Lew Giesy, seconded by Mary Hartman. The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m. on a motion by Mike Brunner, seconded by John Walsh. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary 5
Bench Racing Santa has issues, but was still able to make it to the Rally party. The Waste Management Winter Rally offers the opportunity for a romantic Valentine’s Day related getaway. Extra large t-shirts from the Fun One were made available to those at the meeting at no cost. Elizabeth Thiel has storage problems. The NYSRRC, New York State Road Racing Championship, banquet was held Thanksgiving weekend. Several Finger Lakes Region members were recognized.
Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes
November 29, 2011
Location: Murph’s Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit, NY 14617 Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:37 p.m.
Old Business John Walsh has unused race trophies that can be reused for other purposes. Scott Moller has the high points trophies. Rotating trophies need to be returned to Scott as soon as possible.
Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; Scott Moller, Assistant Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Barbara Lissow, Activities Director; Mark Eksten, Fran McAllister and Charles Tanck, Directors.
The membership fees need to be reviewed for consistency.
Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order.
The trailer has been written off.
The minutes of the October 25, 2011, board of directors meeting were approved on a motion by Mark Eksten, seconded by Barb Lissow. Activities Report – Barb Lissow The Awards banquet will be at the Burgundy Basin Inn on Jan. 14. The menu has been set. The cost per person will be the same as last year, $25 for adults, $15 for children. New Business The recipients of the year-end awards need to be named. Suggestions are needed.

Mike and Marsha Toombs have inventoried the storage shed. Used cones will be offered to the RallyCross effort. Uses for the other items need to be defined. Race Report All but one of the national races in NEDiv will be bonus national. A bonus national will have one or two of the six race groups running twice. That is that for some those groups the event will be a double national. The Glen region will run a race at Watkins Glen International using the Saturday – long course, Sunday – short course format. Fun One 2012 A request has been received to include ProIT in the Fun One. Running both HRG and ProIT would result in
overtime at a cost of $2700 per hour. The current ProIT financial arrangements may result in a loss based on those costs. Westward Ho! 2012 Lew Giesy will meet with Fran McAllister and Dave Ciufo to define how to increase attendance and reduce costs for the 2012 running of Westward Ho! Rally Report Charles Tanck brought up the possibility of organizing short rallies for various charities as a means of getting new people interested in RoadRally. Our primary charity rally is run in conjunction with STPR. We have organized rallies for St. Joseph’s Villa and others. The idea is to give new people the opportunity to participate in an easy, simple event. This needs to be investigated for warm weather next year. RallyCross RallyCross dates for Dec. 10, Jan. 15 and Feb. 19 have been scheduled. The Nov. 12 RallyCross at Perry’s Park was run as a night event, with 16 competitors entered. Winter Rally Series Flyers for the first two events in the Winter Rally Series were published in the December issue of Top End and are on the
January 2012
website. The first event will also be part of the WINTR series. Jerry Kerwin and John Werner will write the third rally and Karl Haltiner will do the fifth.
FLR News
Solo Report Brian Buchman will not be returning for a fourth year as Solo chair. Jeff Colegrove has volunteered to take over that position. Jeff’s offer was accepted on a motion by Mike Toombs, seconded by Scott Moller.
Solo and general membership
The cost of events at Seneca Army Depot, considering surface maintenance may be no more than the cost of renting the lot at Rochester Institute of Technology. Divisional Solo events are no longer required. Treasurer’s Report - Elizabeth Thiel Elizabeth distributed copies of the Profit and Loss by Class statement for 2011 through Nov. 29. Several expenses, such as the FedEx charges, weekend memberships, RallyCross site usage, etc.; were paid but not yet entered into the accounts. The Fun One will experience a small loss due to a lower than expected car count. The deposits for the awards banquet at Burgundy Basin Inn and Westward Ho at Nelson Ledges has been paid. Canandaigua National Bank will be invited to present our savings status at the December board meeting.
Meeting Location
Starting Feb. 7 the Solo and general membership meetings will be held in the back room of Murph’s, 705 Titus Ave. Murph’s is near the east end of a small strip mall at the corner of Titus and Cooper, just east of Hudson Ave., in Irondequoit. Additional parking is in back of the building. (See map below.) Food and a full bar are available (the wings are thought to be some of the best in town). Come out and enjoy the company of like-minded car enthusiasts.

Top End Delivery
The printed copy of Top End has fallen victim to the problems being experienced by the US Post Office. Delivery is now taking longer, and some cases much longer, than the 10 days seen in the past. Moving the preparation schedule of each issue to would put it in the hands of the membership prior to the monthly meeting would require material to be available more than three weeks before the meeting. As a result the content would no longer be relevant. Starting with this issue, both the printed copy and the digital copy will be wrapped up two weeks before the next meeting. The digital copy would then be available for viewing on the website, www.flr-scca.com/topend at least a week prior to the meeting. An e-mail notice will be sent to all members who have a valid e-mail address on file with the national office to advise when the digital copy is available online. Unfortunately this will not inform all Finger Lakes Region members. The national membership information does not include an e-mail address for 31% of the region’s members. Another 5% have addresses that are invalid, causing sent e-mail messages to be undeliverable. An unknown number

have e-mail addresses that are no longer in use (or that are not regularly used by specified member). Hence, it is important that every member verify his or her e-mail address on file with Topeka. (If you did not get a notice for the January issue, then you should follow the procedure on page 12. Ed.) There are three differences between the printed and digital copies. The digital copy has color capabilities on ALL pages, not just the outer cover; it is not limited to a multiple of four pages; it does not include address information for new members to protect privacy. Several options are available beyond just notification. The new member or address change information can be included in the e-mail notice and possibly the minutes of the last membership meeting. The issue with the membership information could be sent via e-mail to all. If that is done, some members may want to receive only the digital copy. Membership feedback on the various schemes is needed. CFDresie, Top End Editor.
More “What’s in store for FLR in 2012”
By MaryAnne Curry Shults When the election ballots were tallied for the Finger Lakes Region’s 2012 board of directors, six strong candidates vying for two open Director seats waited with baited breath for the outcome. Chris De Minco and Charles Tanck collected the most votes. Both are long-time Sports Car Club of America members, active in various road-racing activities including Club Racing, SCCA Pro Racing and both have some experience in rallying as well. Another similarity is both are retired mechanical engineers who worked for General Motors for 30-plus years. Those who work in this profession tend to be creative, intelligent and dynamic; this duo fits the stereotype, not only in their racing careers, but also in their administrative roles as Directors. This article introduces both men, their history, and goals as they continue to guide Finger Lakes Region into a new year. CHARLES TANCK: From running shoes to tires Back in the late ‘60s, Tanck competed in the autocross events put on by the Xerox Auto Club. Once a month, drivers wove through the cone course set up with orange cones in one of the big parking lots in Webster. From there, he crewed for a friend who raced a Formula Vee and drove it when it was available.

would try to help. I firmly believe that if you belong to a club and want to participate in events you should try to help in some way,” Tanck said. “When I work I can see how many people just show up and want to drive. They have no idea how many people it takes to put on an event. The SCCA needs members that want to help. If you do nothing, you have no right to complain about how things are run.”
Racing on four wheels wasn’t his only passion. For 20 years, he was race director for the annual Irondequoit 4th of July Race, 10K and two-mile footraces. This provided him with the behind-the-scenes insight of the commitment required to chair a competition.
Last January, Scott Moller took over the role of Assistant Regional Executive, leaving his Director seat vacant. When asked to fill the role, Tanck gladly accepted the appointment. This was his chance to contribute to the Finger Lakes Region. After serving for a year, he’s concerned about dwindling participation in the region’s Rally program—a concern expressed by several other board members. When asked how he would turn it around, Tanck said first there must be an in-depth look at what is offered. One suggestion he presented was offering more short, yet social, fun road rallies to attract the more casual competitor.
Returning to SCCA in 2007, Tanck ran a 1984 ITB Fiero then moved to a 1999 Escort ZX2, running in SSC. However, he wanted to not only be a competitor, but to play an integral role “With today’s 24/7 society, with in Finger Lakes Region. everything open every day, time is pre“Over that time we had many people cious to people,” he said. “Something that wanted to be on the committee but that takes less of their day may generate didn’t really want to do any work,” said some new participants.” Tanck, referring to his foot race commitHe also suggested going back to the tee. “I did not want to be that kind of format of assisting local charities by orDirector.” ganizing fundraising rallies, similar to One of Tanck’s early SCCA experi- the charity rally that has been a support ences made him realize he wanted to con- event for the Susquehannock Trail tribute more. events to be cancelled. We need a way to notify people if the venue is not usable or not enough interest has been generated,” he said. “People coming long distances and finding the event has been cancelled hurts our credibility.” Announcements on the region’s website and social media helps, but using other methods will also get the word out to a larger audience. Tanck is looking forward to the 2012 season. “I just renewed my National license and am looking forward to next season,” he said. “I’m also looking into a Miata— like everybody else!” CHRIS DE MINCO: Heart and soul of a dyno engineer De Minco is concerned about the future; one of his goals is to solidify the tenacity of the region. He feels with new motorsports clubs springing up today, especially those which cater to a specific interest, it can be difficult for our region to extend a personal hand to each and every member. He also understands the importance of avoiding volunteer burn-out. “Maybe bigger isn’t better but we need to be the best at what we decide to do and the main place where motorsports enthusiasts go to have a safe, fun place to play. I think we need to focus on fewer things. Be the best we can with the personnel and finances we have to keep up the Finger Lakes reputation for putting on first-rate events,” De Minco said. 9

“I had a short-course lap record as well as taking down the most catch
De Minco came to the Rochester area in 1974 for the mechanical engineering program at Rochester Institute of Technology. After befriending George Morris, who was the competition director at the time, De Minco crewed for Morris and once he was bitten with the racing bug, bought his own competition car. “I learned the ropes of racing from George [Morris], working on his E Production Porsche Speedster,” De Minco said. “I bought a G Production Spitfire in 1978 and started racing. I took drivers’ schools at the Glen and Lime Rock. George Dennis was my mentor.”
“We’ve got a very small core group that we seem to tax over and over again to support the main elements of the club and performance events—that’s bad. They get old, they burn out or they just get tired of constantly being asked to support the club. If everyone contributed a little it would prevent the few people from doing to much.” Moving aside the classification of being a “racer,” “soloist,” or “rallist,” De Minco said the cohesiveness is developed at fun, social events, using the recent “old-timers’ picnic” as an example. This opens the doors of communication. “The basic membership meeting used to be a place to do that, but now with monthly sub meetings for every specialty and minimal free time we’ve lost the close family of members that should cross pollinate within the whole organization,” he said. De Minco calls himself a “complete motor head,” who started racing motocross and snowmobiles as a teenager. “I’ve taken a green flag every year since,” he said. Many who join the Sports Car Club of America met another member 10
After a triumphant premiere year, winning his first race at Lime Rock and subsequently the New York State Road Racing Championship (NYSRRC), De Minco moved on to build a Nationallevel car for the 1979 season, but it proved unsuccessful. “I did about four laps that year after a painfully expensive learning curve,” De Minco said. By 1982, De Minco had proudly set two track records at Watkins Glen. However, the region’s register teased him he was known more as a liability for one.
De Minco campaigns an Alfa Romero in the Historic Racing fencing at the Fun One when I went off at the Outer Loop,” De Minco laughed. “Judy McAllister said I was the cause of the race loosing money that year, as the region had to pay the Glen to replace the posts and fencing.” Kicking it up a notch, De Minco went on to race in professional series including the Pro Bilstein Rabbit, Pro Renault, Firehawk and Playboy Endurance. He also partnered with Jerry Thompson running a Chevrolet Beretta in IMSA events. However, when the money ran out, he didn’t give up motorsports completely, only mixed it up a bit. De Minco competed in the region’s Winter Rally Challenge and raced go-karts. Then, for a few years, he focused

lots of scrap donor body parts and creative welding.”
“I started racing motorcycles and opened a shop selling Moto Guzzis and mostly used Euro trash. If you wanted a Triumph, Laverda, Ducati single or Moto Morini we were the place to come to in the Northeast,” he said. “I realized I was a better motorcycle builder than racer and had a rider run the bikes for me and won both 750 and 1000cc Vintage National Championships in 1999 and 2000. I even had a few top-three finishes in the Pro Battle of the Twins series.”
Most recently, he signed on with a Grand Am team to support testing for the upcoming 24-hour race at Daytona.
De Minco’s friend and neighbor John Walsh brought him back into the SCCA family. In 2001, De Minco ran Walsh’s ITB Golf at some track days. The sports car racing bug hit De Minco again and he bought a “rough” A Sedan car. “That was the decline of any spare cash,” De Minco said, “and a new SCCA membership for 2002.” He dove right in after rejoining SCCA, not just as a competitor, but chairing several Finger Lakes Region races over the next few years. Retired after working 30 years in advanced engine development for General Motor’s Delphi division, De Minco consults on engine development and teaches engine and vehicle dynamics part time at Rochester Institute of Technology in the mechanical engineering department.
The Rush resident has two daughters, 24 and 26. “They only call me when their cars need work,” he laughed. This year, both Tanck and De Minco send a challenge to each member. “Let’s make it a personal priority for each of us to go to a few membership meetings and maybe even volunteer to support a new club venue this year,” De Minco said. “We have enough of them so you should be able to work it into your busy schedules. As they say, ‘just do it!’ You may meet some really interesting people.” Tanck said the same, in a more succinct way, “Get involved, go to membership meetings, volunteer. The region is only as good as we make it.”

“Jean joined the Finger Lakes Region in 1966 and both ran and wrote rallies. Rallying activities included running in many of the Kid’s Rallys and co-chairing some," said FLR member and former Regional Executive Gene Dinkel. "In addition to rallying, Jean timed for the gymkhanas at the County Fairgrounds and for the winter events at the LeRoy Airport She won a national award when coediting the TOP END in 1969 and that same year was awarded the region's highest honor, the George B. Merwin Trophy, for her outstanding volunteer contributions Jean’s involvement with racing includes, Registration, Timing & Scoring. She was the chair for the National race in 1995 and to show thanks, she received the Gene Dinkel Trophy for her devotion as a worker. The following year she again took on the role of event chair with the region's pride and joy, the Fun One. In addition to working registration for many years, she worked in Timing & Scoring starting in the 1970s. In 1974, Jean was Activities Director for the region. She was Regional Chief of T&S in1974, 1977-80 and 1984-85. She was also treasurer for the region in 1981 and 1982. "Many of her weekends started with working Registration Friday evening and Saturday morning and end in Timing & Scoring," Dinkel said. "In addition to working Registration at STPR (and numerous other jobs not mentioned), Jean has been a great help to me and others doing FLR events."
Walsh and Kurt Thiel got De Minco into ice racing, his latest addiction. “I just bought a Miata that’s about two feet shorter in the front,” he said. “But, I’m working on a ‘Mad Max’ Miata theme with big truck crash bars,

The annual transition of event chairs, board positions and administrative duties is often overwhelming to the person filling the role. To ease this burden for the race chair of the bi-annual national race, Jean put together a handbook to guide novice chairs. 11
"Jean was pretty confident all the "i's were dotted and the t's were crossed and she attributes her successful preparation to Gene, as well as other members who assisted, and uses this as an example of members who are available to HELP. According to Jean, 'these people are there...there are all sorts of willing members to assist and help'," said Chris McAllister in a November 1996 article in Top End, after Jean mentored and encouraged McAllister to step into a leadership role.

McAllister said in addition to her very helpful hints, Jean prepared a detailed notebook for anyone taking on the task of Race Chairman.

"The region has had notebooks such as this in the past, however, on occasion they have been difficult to track down," McAllister said, "For this reason, Jean will keep the notebook and loan it out to other Race Chairmen. The benefit of this is that along with the loan of the notebook, comes some wonderful advice and suggestions!" The notebook explained the processes involved, the steps necessary for a successful event and even has examples of all the forms required for the event. Jean prepared the guide as a tool for members who would like the opportunity to chair an event. An added perk was Jean's personal assistance as a mentor and advisor for anyone with questions or concerns “The instructional book contained all the basic, underlying things that are required. the Race Chairman must now only needed to refine the basic things and make minor changes," McAllister said. "Jean's advice for new Chairmen is this; begin as early as possible, designate the responsibilities and take things one step at a time (and return the notebook as soon as you are done with it!) Obviously, this advice can be taken literally, just look at the success of our Fun One!" Jean is survived by her husband of 56 years, George; five children, Carolyn 12
A Memorial Service to celebrate Jean's life was heldd on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 2576 Browncroft Blvd., Rochester, NY, 14625. Memorials in memory of Jean
Scott David Hume, a 26-year member of Finger Lakes Region and the SCCA, passed away on Aug. 16, 2011, at his residence in Waltham, Mass. at age 45. He had moved to the Boston area in June from North Carolina and was a hospital administrator for Tufts University, recently giving up that job to pursue full time his dream of finishing his RN degree. Scott grew up around race cars and from a young age helped crew with his father at races around the country. Prior to his hospital administrative duties, he had been an EMT and was often part of race medical teams. His early hospital work as an OR Tech was noteworthy, for surgeons from around the country often asked for him because of his medical skills and technical expertise. Scott was a valued member of Race Medical at Watkins Glen in the late '80s and mid '90s and an avid race fan all his life. He will be remembered with fondness. Scott was an excellent photographer, a talented percussionist, a skilled IT person, a gourmet cook and a person who was well liked and highly regarded by his many friends and associates from around the country. He is survived by his parents Jeff and Terry Hume of Honeoye Falls, N.Y., who are also members of FLR.

Trivia and a scenic touring fall rally equal afternoon delight
By Rick Barnes, Rallymaster On Sunday, Oct. 16, the Genesee Valley Colour Tour Rally departed from Tom Wahl's Restaurant in Avon for a pleasant drive in the countryside surrounding the Genesee River valley. The weather cooperated, and 16 teams turned out. Two MGBs even showed up to take advantage of the discounted entry fee for classic cars. Eight teams were novices, the other half in the other-than-novice (OTN) category. Scoring was based on correctly answering 20 trivia questions; teams had to seek enlightenment along the route. Due to the nature of the event, there were a multitude of ties for various places. The Novice category had two-way ties for each place. First in class was won by the teams of Tony Zanni/Andrea Liberte and Jean Donnan/ Ann Mowry, both with 19 out 20 correct answers. In OTN, there was a four-way tie for first. The teams of Cory Kuhns/Marnie Soom, Wayne/ Pat Scheible, and Tom/Deb Langdon each answered all questions correctly. The Hall family adopted a two-team strategy, with Doug/Kate Hall rounding out the teams tying for first place. Team Hall II, Heidi and Maggie tied with two other teams for the runner-up position. Official results are given in Genesee Valley Colour Tour Results table. In the end, everyone enjoyed themselves and will hopefully come for future events. Special thanks to Alan Smith for safety checking the route, and Tom Langdon for offering instruction for the novice class, and of course, to all the folks who came out to play.

Rally Meeting Notes November 17, 2011
96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order. The following nine RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, John Kastenhuber, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon, Alan Smith, Gary Thomas, John Werner and Tony Zanni. RallyCross Series The calendar as it is updated will be forwarded to Tony Zanni to allow scheduling of winter RallyCross dates. The schedule needs to work around the Central New York ice racing series. The Nov. 12 RallyCross at Perry’s Park was run as an evening/night event. Sixteen drivers entered. This format worked well, a future event will be run at night. Reflective vests need to be used to allow workers to be seen. Tony Zanni will generate a list of items needed to conduct future night events. Cones and helmets are still needed. Competitor’s cars can no longer be left at Perry’s Park. If a second venue is used for the series, equipment logistics needs to be addressed. Rally Safety Steward A RoadRally safety steward class needs to be scheduled. Possibly at the end of a monthly rally meeting. Summer Rally Series Rick Barnes reported that the Oct. 16 rally, Genesee Valley Colour Tour, had 16 teams entered. Two of those teams drove MGBs. The event went well with very few complaints. Winter Rally Series Jerry Kerwin and John Werner will resurrect Herbie’s Revenge as the third event in the series. A rallymaster has not been named for the fourth event in the series. Several possible rallymasters were mentioned and will be contacted regarding volunteering to head up the Feb. 18 rally. 22
Karl Haltiner has volunteered to be rallymaster for the last event in the series. Tom Langdon will contact Matt Rhoades to get a copy of Matt’s scoring program to use for the Winter Rally Series. The possibility of conducting a novice class after each rally was discussed. This would supplement the pre-rally novice class. The goal is to help the new rallyists understand the process while the event is still fresh. Rick Barnes has offered to run sweep for the series whenever he is available. The rallymaster instructions should include no checkpoints in location where all cars are not running at rally speed. A blank safety form will be provided for all rallymasters. This should insure that the safety rules are followed. WINTR Rally Series The WINTR, Winter INTernational Rally series, will run The Long Way Home as part of their series. The WINTR series will include four rallies in 2012, all run in the northeast. The smaller geographic area for the series should allow more competitors to run in more of the events.
cancelled due to wet field conditions. Old Solo series cones in storage will be passed along for use in the RallyCross events.
Miscellaneous Discussions The Performance Rally prepped Honda CRX ran at the recent RallyCross as a shakedown.
It is possible that the Super Special stage may not use hay bales in 2012. Talks are going on with contractors concerning improving the Special Stage course surface. Changes in the cross over are being proposed to reduce some of the course following problems seen in 2011. The jump will also be eliminated.
John Werner has joined the Subaru club. The engine in his Volvo expired forcing the purchase of a more reliable car.
Summer Rally Series The results and an article for the Genesee Valley Colour Tour will be sent for printing in the January issue of Top End. STPR® A long-term contract has been signed with Waste Management for the use of their land for the Waste Management Winter Rally and for Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally. The Waste Management Winter Rally is scheduled for Feb. 11. The format will be two short stages down, two short stages down, two short stages back and finishing with two short stages back. Weather protection is being considered. Matt Rhoades will not be rallymaster for the charity rally at STPR. Possible rallymasters are in mind and will be contacted at an upcoming event. The RallyCross run in conjunction with STPR may be run on Sunday.
Failure to check the status of the recording device resulted in the failure to capture a number of irrelevant comments.
Winter Rally Series The first event in the series, The Long Way Home, is ready to be checked. It will be part of the WINTR, Winter INTernational Rally series.
December 13, 2011
The Ithaca Winter Rally is in good shape.
96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order. The following seven RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon, Alan Smith, Mike Toombs and John Werner. RallyCross Series The Dec. 10 RallyCross was
The flyer for the third event will be based on the one for the previous Herbie’s Revenge. Carl Dresie will modify the previous flyer and send it along to Jerry Kerwin and John Werner for approval. Cheap Charlie’s is a potential start/finish location. The fourth event needs either a rallymaster or be an “out of region” event. The date is in conflict with the

Ohio Winter Rally. Karl Haltiner has volunteered to rallymaster the last event in the series. The final standings of the 2011 series were reviewed. They will be sent to Carl Dresie for publication in Top End. The general instructions for the 2012 series are unchanged from last year. The redated generals will be sent to MaryAnne Shults for publication on the website. Unused race trophy mugs that are currently being stored by John Walsh will be used for Winter Rally Series trophies. The race stickers will be removed. McAllister Sign will be contacted about making stickers for the rally series. Tom Langdon has a few dozen unengraved glasses that can be used. Eric Hobron is making an additional six checkpoint signs. Replacements for the current rally timing clocks need to be defined. Miscellaneous Discussions The number of pages for the Winter Rally Series general instructions has increased from one and a half page in 2000 to the current four pages. Jerry Kerwin has yet to meet Santa at the Rally Christmas and Awards party. A number of checkpoint locations and other route properties that are considered to be in bad taste were discussed. They are not detailed in case they might be used in an upcoming rally. With the sale of RallyCar the name has been changed back to Rally America. Noting the difficulties of other rally competitors can lead to problems by the team laughing at others problems. Events need to be scheduled through the new Activities Director, Mary Hartman. The contract with FedEx is still in effect, allowing event copies to be made at a low cost. A number of military flight anecdotes were exchanged. (How is that related to rally?)
