REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive Wow, the year is half over, who would have guessed. By now we have had our resurrected Westward Ho! race. (Stupid word processor, it keeps yelling at me when I put a “!” in the middle of sentence, got a little off subject there.) You have got to understand something, I didn’t write this report until the 13th and I need to get it to Carl ASAP. My desktop computer installed some Microsoft updates today and now won’t boot up and my laptop installed an update from Logitech and now my mouse doesn’t work. I have never liked using mouse pads, but I need to get this done so here goes nothing. The first thing I need to remind you of is that the membership meeting in July is going to be on the 10th and it is going to be a picnic. So be sure and check out the flyer in this issue of Top End with the information on the picnic and membership recognition. Come on out and join in on the fun. Lew Giesy kept pushing that he wanted to try Westward Ho! once again. I’ve always had fun at the event and enjoyed working races at the track; it was just that we never were able to break even financially. Lew and the competition committee worked on making sure that everyone who came to compete would get a lot of track time. Formula First put our two races on their schedule. This helps to ensure that we get a good turnout for the race weekend. Also, anyone who races at Westward will get a 10% discount for the Fun One in September. Because of the money worries, certain things had to be rethought and at this point we have our fingers crossed. 4
The Solo season has continued and the third event of the Finger Lakes region’s series was hampered by bad weather. The event was a little wet in the morning and we had a torrential rain storm with small hail as we were leaving RIT. We should have had a couple of events when the weather was good in March. The National Tour for the Northeast was held the weekend before the Westward race in Ayer, MA. There were quite a few region members who made the trip, myself included, I’ll let you know how we did at the meeting. The summer season of RallyCross is right around the corner. Because of weather we have two distinct RallyCross seasons, the winter one when the ground is frozen (there wasn’t much of that this year) and the summer one when the ground has dried out. Tony Zanni has been working hard for the past couple of years on the program and I know that the events will be a success. At a recent meeting there was some discussion about the content on Top End and all I can say is Carl can only put in what people give him. If you would like to see more content about any subject you are more than welcome, and encouraged to submit articles to Carl for publishing. We have some people who can word smith the article for you so you need not worry about the grammar and spelling, it will look great when published. So I need to get this sent off to Carl, so to finish this off I want to remind everyone to come to the picnic on the 10th of July. Until next month, Mike
Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes June 5, 2012 Location: Murph’s Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit, NY 14617 Regional Executive Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:09 p.m. The following is arranged by topic and may not be in chronological order. The May general membership meeting minutes as printed in the June issue of Top End were approved on a motion by Mike Brunner, seconded by Alan Smith. Activities – Mary Hartman The July Solo and genera l membership meetings will be at Camp Eastman on July 10, 2012. This picnic meeting will include membership recognition. Festivities start a 6 p.m. (A flier for the picnic is printed in the July issues of Top End. Ed.) Sixty-four letters have been sent out to members to be recognized. Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes will be presenting a program on the Targa Newfoundland at the August meeting. Requests for other programs have been sent out. Area 10 Director’s Report – John Walsh News from the recent board meeting is that the club is in good shape. A number of new programs are being studied. The Alternative Driver’s School program has already been implemented. It is another path for driver ’s to become licensed without waiting for the traditional school conducted by a region. The program recognizes other
July 2012
track experience. Successful completion of observed sessions will then allow the granting of a regional license. Initial regional events include close scrutiny of the new driver’s ability. This program has allowed new driver’s to get into competition sooner. The “school” events do not need to be races or even SCCA sanctioned and insured events. This will be implemented at the upcoming Westward Ho! The Majors race program is running in prototype stage in the MidWest and SouthWest divisions. If no problems are encountered, the program will go nationwide next year. John plans on being at the Solo Nationals Thursday and Friday. Membership Report – Mike Brunner Twenty-six members attended the Solo and general membership meetings. The region currently has 415 members, an increase of one since May 1. Program – Mary Hartman Pictures taken at the VIP site during STPR® were shown. Pictures and videos taken during the Richard Petty Driving Experience at the Orlando track were shown. On track started with a three lap ride around then continued with an eight lap drive around and ending with a nine lap drive around.
PROVIDING THE RACING COMMUNITY WITH INSURANCE AND DISABILITY INCOME FOR OVER 40 YEARS. 2012 July
The drive around sessions were done following a car with green and yellow lights. The green light asked that you speed up; the yellow to slow down. Pre-driving classroom sessions include orientation, car construction and helmet fitting. Those seeing Mary after getting out of the car reported that she did not stop smiling for three days. Mary has information on the various tracks that the Driving Experience uses. Cars include NASCAR style cars, Indy style cars and Ferraris. More information is available at www. drivepetty.com. Race Report Worker registration can be done through Motorsportreg.com. We do not currently register workers that way. Other regions do to gain a better count on workers. The “May Madness” regional race at Watkins Glen International, conducted by the Glen Region, had about 160 entries. The board of directors agreed to jointly purchase with the Glen region, new scales for use in tech. Race Monitor is a smart phone application costing $5 that will allow a person to follow the session over the internet. The information is updated within two seconds. It requires internet access for the Timing & Scoring equipment. The Glen Region had it working at “May Madness.” We will be looking at implementing the program for future races. Westward Ho! – Lew Giesy Entries are coming in pretty good for the June 23-24 weekend. We currently stand at 36. Party expenditures will be set depending upon entries. Workers, especially flaggers, are needed. The event is being heavily promoted, at recent races and over the internet.
Rally Report Charity Rally– MaryAnne Shults The Relay for Life Rally run on Friday during STPR® weekend had eight teams scored. (Results are published in the July issue of Top End. Ed.) The late start on promoting the event may be one of the reasons for the low turnout. STPR® - Alan Smith Total entries were 65, with 45 finishing the sixteen stages. A number of the teams were all female. The event went very well with positive feedback from many of the competitors. The Friday Subaru Super Special was cancelled, with about half of the teams completing the two stages, due to severe thunderstorms. Dirt Excavating come in as a sponsor for the Saturday running of the Super Special. They created a very nice “dirt road” for the Super Special stages. Some freedom in pairings was allowed. Spectator attendance at the Super Special stages set a record. More information can be found online at news.stpr.org. Videos on youtube.com also show a number of stages. Competitor donations allowed the workers to enjoy the excellent Saturday night after event banquet. The wrap-up meeting is scheduled for August 12 in the Watkins Glen State Park. Summer Road Rallies A “destination” rally has been proposed. Details are being worked out. The need is for a simple course following event with a Solo Report – Mike Toombs The Solo meeting preceded the general membership meeting. The second event on Memorial Day weekend had 63 entries. The event was cut short because a special use permit was not obtained from Henrietta. The third event of the 2012 Finger Lakes Region’s Solo series was held last weekend. The number of entries was 5
low at 57, probably due to the inclement weather. The “redo” of the Rochester Institute of Technology parking lot has made it a much better and safer site. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel The current checking account balance was reported. All bills presented to date have been paid. They include: Maintenance at Perry’s Park, the RallyCross site; Nelson Ledges insurance application; Flags; Sound meter calibration; Top End printing and mailing; and Solo sanctions. Income items include Nelson Ledges entry fees paid by credit card through Motorsportreg.com. That income is reported once per month. One refund is to be paid. The sanction for the Alternative Driving School at Nelson Ledges is to be paid. The Alternative Driving School is covered under the race report. Financial statements are available for review from Elizabeth.
Dave Ciufo, Assistant Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Chris DeMinco, Fran McAllister and Charles Tanck, Directors.
The financial report was accepted on a motion by MaryAnne Shults, seconded by Chris Bucknam.
Others present: Jeff Colegrove, Solo Chair; Lew Giesy, Westward Ho. Chair, Shaun Hallam and Anna Thiel
The meeting was adjourned at 9:42 p.m. on a motion by Alan Smith, seconded by Rosemary Goodnight. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary
Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes May 29, 2012 Location: Murph’s Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit, NY 14617 Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:37 p.m. Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; 6
Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order. The minutes of the April 24, 2012 board of directors meeting were approved on a motion by Charlie, seconded by Fran. Activities Report Fran reported that the membership recognition picnic committee has met and the picnic is coming together. Fran also suggested that dates be set for an informal attendance at the Log Cabin Cruise Night. (The Log Cabin Restaurant is located at 2445 West Walworth Rd, Macedon, NY, near the intersection of West Walworth Rd. and Rt. 31F. They feature a Cruise Night every Wednesday during the summer.) Those showing up at the Cruise Night range from antiques to new, from motorcycles to high end cars; a wide
selection of things to see in a very casual atmosphere. The general membership meeting is currently being held at Murph’s Irondequoit Pub. That site has the capacity for 25 to 30 people. Suggestions are being sought for other locations, with the requirements being the availability of food and drink. Murph’s meets the requirements for the board meetings. New Business The purchase of a brick at Watkins Glen in memory of Ken Buchel was approved on a motion by Carl, seconded by Dave. Ken was the driver who died as a result of an accident at the Glen National race the Finger Lakes region conducted last July. Race Report The scales used by tech at Watkins Glen are starting to show problems. Approval to cover half of the cost with the Glen Region was passed on a motion by Mike, seconded by Carl. Westward Ho! 2012 Entries currently stand at 19. All arrangements have been made except for the Saturday evening party. That
July 2012
will depend upon the number of entries received. Fun One 2012 A race chair is needed. A committee of board members was named to work out the details of race chairmanship. Rally Report Lew reported that STPR® currently has 68 entries. A road is being built for the Super Special, by a road construction company that has just come aboard as a sponsor. The Relay For Life charity rally will be held on June 1. Promotion material for this event was sent out the second week of May. The route has been set and checked. Registration opens at 9 a.m. at the Tioga County Fairgrounds. A ‘destination’ rally is being discussed. Schedule and other details need to be set. This could be done by the June 12 RoadRally meeting. Solo Report – Jeff Colegrove The second event of the Finger Lakes region’s Solo series was held this past weekend at the Dome Arena. There were 62 entries. It was a good event except for the low entries. The event ended early because we did not have a special use permit issued by the town of Henrietta. The site rental will be refunded and that money will be used to reduce the entry fees for the competitors that entered the Dome Arena event at an upcoming Finger Lakes Region Solo. Competitors were able to get three runs in on the rather short course. The board previously approved the policy that any non-member who enters a Solo and joins SCCA will get that event for free. Eight people used this membership incentive to join at the May 26 event. Seven non-members chose to become weekend members. The August 12 Solo at RIT is in conflict with a Western New York Region event at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Scheduling at RIT may not allow this conflict to be resolved. 2012 July

to my usual 40. (note to those present – the blue Armco line down the driver’s side was from the previous owner at the Fun One last year – plan to have it gone by the next race!) My usual spot to park in the paddock was full, so we camped out across the street, making it a little harder for people to find us if they did not look both ways. I was group 1 for the weekend; it was nice being done before lunch!
“New” car, new helmet, new HANS, ….and I am WHAT!?!?!?!? By Mary Hartman Participation in the Memorial weekend regional at Watkins Glen was iffy the week before the event. Finally, Friday afternoon I went to Eksten’s where the car was being prepped, and picked up the new to me car, a 2006 Chevy Cobalt recently purchased from Steve in Yonkers. From there, it was time to head to the Glen. It helped to know that I had excellent crew coming this weekend: Jim and Ena, Don and Sharon with Brandon and Jeff, and Anita. Registration went quickly, with little to no line. I did not make it into the weekend’s program since I registered late. Hope people realize it is me in #49, as time did not allow for number changes
Had a great qualifying time Saturday and gridded next to the only other SSC car in the group, red neon. The Chevy corners better and has better pick up than my Neon did, yielding better times for me. I passed the red neon going up the SS’s after the first or second lap, and left him behind! However, disappointment ensued at impound. Something happened that has not happened to me before and words I have never been told personally – I was underweight! Hard to believe! Minimum weight is 3100, much heavier than my neon. I had seen an old weight sheet from the previous owner showing it as 3230, so figured I was fine going into the race. The scales show I was 60 pounds underweight! One of the Mazda’s was also underweight, so we both got bumped back, but at least not disqualified.
This put the crew to work to devise a solution before Sunday’s qualifying. We filled the gas tank and anchored some weight in the trunk. Went to impound to check it out. We were only 24 pounds over. We decided we needed to add more weight in the trunk to play it safe. Sunday’s qualifying went bad – the car handled terribly with the added weight in the trunk. Before the race, we rearranged things. Found a spot under the front passenger seat where weight had previously been located. We put most of the weight there. Handling during Sunday’s race was beautiful. The other SSC car and I played with each other through much of the race. We were side by side up the back straight. He got away from me in the inner loop, but I caught up with him in the SS’s again, only to repeat our story down the back straight. This went on until I lost him as the Mazda’s lapped us! Still, I finished listed right behind the other SSC car. Goal for the next race at the Glen is to beat him!

Regional-level competitors often tell an interesting tale By Marilyn Randall After having many different jobs at STPR® over the years, I chose to work with my daughter, MaryAnne Shults, who was the co-press officer, for the 36th running of the Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Rally®, presented by Citizens and Northern Bank, held June 1-2, based out of the Tioga County Fairgrounds near Wellsboro, Pa.
knew to conduct my first dialogue. Phil Barnes, a long-time Finger Lakes Region member, was participating in his 21st year at STPR. He has been a volunteer, driver and co-driver. This year, Barnes was co-driving—what those who do not rally would call navigating—for Tony Esposito, the only Wellsboro local in this performance rally. Esposito is the owner of Tony’s Italian Cuisine in downtown Wellsboro. This was Esposito’s third year of rallying, and hopes to gain more experience, and of course, to finish the rally. Being the local favorites, this team has a multitude of fans, proven on Day 2 when this team received the loudest cheer as they pulled up to the start.
I knew that many of the top-seeded drivers would be too busy with other interviews, so I decided to concentrate on those teams further back in the order, which did not get much publicity, namely those competing in the two regional-level rallies, the Sherwood Forest Rally and the Finger Lakes Rally.
The next team I interviewed was chosen by random, mainly because the young and pretty co –driver was standing by herself next to her car. This was a husband and wife team, Rachelle and Samir Kaltak, of Grand Rapids, Mich. They were part of SubaRoots, a group who are competing in stage rallying in memory of Matthew Nobles Marker who sadly was killed in the Olympus Rally a year ago April. This was the Kaltaks' first year of performance rallying. Rachelle Kaltak said the SubaRoots' goal was to promote safety in the sport, in Matt’s memory. Matt’s father was the crew chief of their team.
I was out of my comfort zone and a little nervous to do these interviews, so I chose the only competitor I personally
Long-term rally enthusiasts are noticing a substantial increase in the number of female competitors in
On Friday, I headed for the Green, a small park in Wellsboro, where the 65 entrants' cars were gridded at the Park Exposé. Here the teams have a chance to show off their cars to their fans, and do last minute repairs before getting the green flag and transiting to the first stage.

performance rallying. One team of note attracted my attention, and those of many others, because of the large decal on the side of the car that screamed "I [heart] Boobies.” The team of driver Erica Detota, of Passaic, N.J, and Allison Hirsh, of Waldorf, Mass., are calling attention to breast cancer awareness. Erica became interested in performance rally when doing marketing for rally competitor Travis Hansen. After loosing her grandmother to breast cancer, she tied in advocacy for regular screening for early detection of the disease. Erica has competed as a driver for three years, but this was the first time the women have competed together. Hirsch said she was first attracted to Detota when she saw the side of Detota's car with its powerful message. She is serving active duty in the U.S. Air Force and was deployed to Afghanistan two weeks after this year's event. Nathan Usher and his brother Aaron Usher, both of Mason, Mich., are relatively new to rallying. They did compete in STPR last year, but did not finish. However, they placed fourth in Central Regional Rally Championship. Their goal for this Wellsboro event was to finish and gain experience. I was attracted to car 702, the team of Tim Oliver and Sid Sareen, because of their rally mascot, Stig, the gray tiger cat on a leash. Sareen, a native of India, now lives in White Plains, N.Y., and Oliver

from Wannamasa N.J. This was the second event these men have competed as a team. After wishing the teams good luck, I went back rally headquarters at the fairgrounds, where I worked in net control to record information for the event's various social media. It seems that my good luck wishes for my teams came to pass, because all but finished at least one of the regional events. This was my third year being medic for the VIP bus. Previously I mostly was assigned to general spectator points. I like the bus – got a ride, got a smaller group of spectators, and lunch is included! Detota and Hirsh raising awareness of breast cancer. Photo courtesy of Lynn Randall

The bus arrived at the Tioga County Fairgrounds registration building at 8:50 Saturday morning. There was some initial confusion. Apparently different leave times were given to passengers. Most were told 9:00, while some were told 9:45. We left the registration building around 9:20 as we waited for some latecomers. About 15 minutes later as we were heading out of Wellsboro, we were radioed to head back, as there were people back at the registration building. People on the bus got upset, and some of the stage workers were anxious that they would get there too late to set up. It was decided to head to the stage, much to the relief of those on the bus. Our first stop was stage 7. We watched the approximately 60 cars go through the station, with some beeping a greeting as they went by. Some cars slid through, some splashed the puddle on the outer edge of the corner, and some drove neatly around. At one point, we were briefly joined by a couple drivers whose engine blew before our corner. They said there was another car near them that slid off the road and hit a tree. After a brief stay, they returned to their car to join the sweep vehicles. We then moved on to stage 11, where we had our sandwich wraps, veggie dip, cookies, and bottled water. Things were delayed and then word came that this leg was to be a transit to make up for lost time. Our passengers were disappointed, but accepted the decision, especially after they were told they would get a refund. We still had a good time waving to the cars as they went by. Many drivers waved and/or beeped back at us. Of special interest was car 689, who had friends and relatives on the bus. We got back to the fairgrounds early, with time to spare before the super special stage.

Rally Tom Langdon Interim Rally Chair
Rally Meeting Notes June 12, 2012 96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order. The following eight RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon, Alan Smith, John Werner and Tony Zanni. The general membership meeting will be a membership recognition picnic at Camp Eastman on July 10. The July rally meeting will be held July 17. More news later. The Yahoo calendar function has been changed and the procedure for notification needs to be reviewed. Tom is planning to end his tenure as interim Rally chair at the end of the 2013 Winter Rally Series. RallyCross Series The field in Perry’s Park has had the bad parts disc plowed. A maintenance day is to be scheduled to repair the course. Dirt is being purchased to fill in rutted areas. The course will be reset. Ben has a tractor that can be used to help work on the field. Rick has a trailer that can be
used to move the tractor. The box plate on the tractor has spikes that can be used to level or a York rake needs to be borrowed. It also has a bucket loader. Ben is working on a RallyCross course on his property. It could be ready by the end of the season. Tony needs contact information for the Warsaw Airpark. When can a RallyCross be scheduled at that site? Tony will contact Jeff Colegrove regarding helmets for use in the RallyCross series. Helmets are needed for the June 30 RallyCross, but they need to be returned to Solo for the July 1 event. The Central New York region’s RallyCross run Sunday on a modified Super Special course at STPR® had 14 entries. Overall winner was Matt Berkebile. Results can be found at cnyscca.com//rallyx/results/2012/2012_06_03_ combined.pdf. Summer Rally Series A summer social rally has been proposed. Lynn Randall has expressed an interest in working on this event. A date and other details need to be worked out. Carl will talk with Lynn. Possibilities are starting in Canandaigua, ending in the Hammondsport area. A paved road event without checkpoints was suggested. Scoring would be based on answers to questions on items seen along the route. This is similar to the last event Rick conducted out of Avon. Special interest cars would be given consideration. A picture rally format is another possibility. STPR® There are a number of stories coming out of this year’s STPR. Stories and links to videos can be found on www.stpr.org. The Super Special went very well, with the “road” built by Dirt Excavating. Several competitors who had not finished STPR came back to run the Super Special. Ticket sales
were up over last year, even with the inclement weather on Friday. An information feeder for the announcers needs to be defined. The Saturday evening dinner food was excellent. Thanks to the competitors, whose donation paid for the workers meals. Thanks to Kurt Thiel for being rallymaster for the Relay for Life Charity Rally during STPR®. (Results are published in the July issue of Top End. Ed.) Kurt wrote a good course. The schedule worked out well. The 2013 edition needs to be started earlier, and promoted earlier. Winter Rally Series Eric Hobron did an excellent job on building new checkpoint signs. He needs to submit a bill for materials and labor. Two RoadRally safety steward applications have been received. The RallyCross safety steward application form is the same. Four RallyCross applications are to be received. Miscellaneous Discussions Subaru WRX aftermarket five hole rims have weak center sections. The climate control system in the Mountaineer is fixed, that means the Subaru recovery vehicle now has heat and air conditioning. Tom Langdon will notify the rally group when the pick-n-pull junk yard in Williamson is open. Doggy treadmills need to be shallow for Dachshunds. People treadmills need holders for important items such as remote controls, drink cans, etc. Alan described the Solo event format done with heats. This format reduces changeover time resulting in possibly more runs. Bonfires, Druid Christmas tree burning parties, and other party activities around the campfire were discussed.
