REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive
I have been writing these columns for quite a while now, and of all I have written, this is the toughest one. As many of you are aware, I have been the regional executive for quite some time now. If you count the two years I did the 80’s and 90’s I am currently in my eighth year. Most of the time I have found the job enjoyable and I have been proud to serve as RE. As you have read in columns I have written before, there have also been some times when I was concerned about things in the region. Recently there have been many discussions on where the region should be going and what we should be doing, and maybe it’s time for someone new to lead us there. So if you haven’t guessed already, it is with deep regret that I am announcing that I will not be running for the post of regional executive next year. I don’t regret running eight times; I have made a lot of friends and have enjoyed working with everyone over the years. So where do we go from here? We need to find someone who has the time and is willing to put the effort into the job. It is not a position that just runs two meetings a month. The one thing about 4
running a region that races, rallies, rally crosses and runs solo events, there is some work to do between meetings. I don’t mean to scare people off, the effort you put into this job is worth it and anyone who knows and loves the SCCA can do it. On to other topics, we had our member recognition picnic this past month. I was late arriving, but got there just in time to see Marsha get her recognition as a 40 year member. It is important to thank the people who have been in the club for a while and made it what it is today. It is also important to thank everyone who put time into organizing the picnic, making the phone calls, cooking the food and presenting the awards. A couple of weeks ago the region went to Ohio and put on our Westward Ho! race. We have been running there for over ten years and I enjoy going out there, I just wish we could break even at this event. As I have stated in other columns, we didn’t have a very good financial year last year. We seem to be in a bi-annual cycle; we lose money one year and then make money the next. The problem is that we are not making enough during the up years to make up for the down years. So this year we have been looking closer at budgets to ensure that we can continue to put on events. Last year WGI changed their policy on when they bill the region and when we have to pay. Prior to last year we paid after the event was over, but now we have to pay a month prior to the event. So for our BFGoodrich Tires Finger Lakes SCCA Super Tour we have paid WGI over $50,000 a month before the event. I don’t want to scare you, we are not on the brink of bankruptcy, I just want you to know the financial pressures that the board of directors are dealing with when we make some of our decisions. Speaking of the BFGoodrich Tires Finger Lakes SCCA Super Tour, it is the weekend right after the 4th of July. Where I work we have Thursday and
Friday off and I’m sure many of you are in the same situation, so why not stop down? Registration is Wednesday the 4th from 6 PM to 8:30 PM, Thursday from 6 to 9 AM and then again from 6 to 10 PM. Then when the actual race weekend starts we are open from 7 to 10 AM and 8:30 to 10 PM Friday. There are other times on Saturday and Sunday as well, so why don’t you stop by and check it out. Until next month, Mike

July 2013
Race - Attendance at regional events is down 25%-30% - 14 entries for Westward Ho with one month left - Supertour has 60 registered participants - Insurance is ready for events - May Madness had disappointingly low attendance - The only way any regional chapters of the SCCA will be viable is if they consolidate races, and eventually the regions. - Considering co-chair from another upstate chapter for the Fun One as the first step to consolidating - We should informally gather with Western, Central, and Glen Regions - Consider an event at "Central Square" north of Syracuse - SCCA wants to do away with driver’s schools; we don't believe this is a good idea - It’s hard to rationalize five races at the Glen each year, given how many tracks are in the area today - SCCA has too many classes and we can't run many of them on the track at the same time. Solo - We lost Perry-Warsaw Airport due to new paving and FAA issues Rally - No News Activities - Picnic is Wednesday, June 5th and will serve as general membership meeting Other Business - www.motorsportreg.com has higher fees than credit cards at the event, and only simplifies registration slightly - Membership and Board meetings will move back to Murph’s, consider moving general meeting to Wednesdays? - We have a new webmaster - Mike Stutzman

New Business - Elizabeth reviewed financials with Gary Lippert? Motion to adjourn by Charlie, seconded by Dave, adjourned 8:42 p.m. Respectfully submitted Marcus Kroll, Secretary

Recognizing Bob Henderson
Bob Henderson has done more for auto sports in general, and club racing in particular than any other Finger Lakes member living today. We are celebrating his 50th anniversary of membership in SCCA at this member recognition picnic. Bob was born in Rochester, graduated from Brighton High School and Amherst College, in 1955 with a degree in history and economics. He joined the Army right after graduation, and became the chauffer to General John Throckmorton, Commandant of cadets at West Point. This prestigious position introduced him to many notable passengers, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Prince and Princess (Grace Kelly) Rainier, General Maxwell Taylor, US Army Chief of Staff during WWII. While there, he was a friend of Pete Dawkins, Rhodes Scholar and Heisman trophy winner. Bob joined SCCA in 1963. He then attended driver schools, got his competition license and began competing in regional races in a Mini Cooper. The following year, he ran the National Championship Runoffs at Riverside, CA, is the Mini, finishing 6th in D Sedan. In 2000, Bob was inducted into the Watkins Glen Walk of Fame, earning a star on the walkway on Franklin Street. He has driven more competition laps on the Watkins Glen Road Course than any other driver. Bob was instrumental in founding the Showroom Stock category of club racing, and may have saved SCCA from becoming the “Vintage Car Racing Club of America.” Bob served on the SCCA Board of Directors from 19661972. During that period, the concept of showroom stock competition was introduced to SCCA. Now it comprises of nearly half of the total entrants to Club Racing Events. Oscar Kovaleski and Dave Tollaksen, as well as Bob, convinced the rest of the Board to give
6
showroom stock a try, despite the strong objections of the comp board at the time. This move brought in many new members to SCCA who could finally achieve their dream of being a race car driver at a reasonable cost to them. He has run, for example, POR (Press on Regardless) and The Canadian Winter Rally, and the Shell 4000 Trans Canada Rally. The Highlight of his rally career took place when he became SCCA Rally Champion in a Subaru WRX Production GT with FLR’s John McArthur as co-driver. Phil Henderson was his co-driver in the 4,000 mile Trans Canada Rally, going from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Calgary, Alberta. They drove the first competition entry of a Datsun 540 in the western hemisphere. Bob was also involved in major performance rallies in both the U.S. and Canada. When Bob was the NEDiv Executive Steward in 1978, this question was posed to him, “What aren’t there any women in the Steward’s program?” When he looked around the northeast to find a suitable token woman to fill this spot, a lady by the name of Sue Roethel came to mind. The rest is history. Sue has been an outstanding example of a steward in the club…male OR female! There is no time to tell of all of Bob’s accomplishments, but I will try to do a brief synopsis: After joining SCCA in 1963, Bob competed in regional and national races in a Mini Cooper. In 1964, he ran the National RunOffs at Riverside California in the Mini. By 1965, he changed to a FV. Bob also ran SCCA national rallies with late SCCA member, Bill Bell, in a Triumph TR4, sponsored by Best Motors of Rochester. In 1966, he again ran at Riverside in the Mini, finishing 4th in D sedan.in “67, the RunOffs changed venue to Daytona, but Bob, consistent with the previous year, again finished 4th in the Mini. Also, by 1966, Bob entered the governing aspect of SCCA, but being Area 11 director, a position he held until 1972.
He continued to race the Mini, both regionally and nationally. By 1969, he changed cars, competing in a Datsun 2000(C and D Production) and again ran the run offs in Daytona. From 1963-2013, Bob has continued regular competition with no renewal waivers required. He competed in over 20 Runoffs between 1964 and 2001, with at least 15 podium finishes. Bob also competed in Pro Racing. In 1985, he was the Firehawk IMSA Endurance Race champion in a factory backed Eagle Talon. In 1966, he again won the IMSA Endurance Championship, this time with Eric VanCleef in a Toyota Supra. He also had several victories in the Motorola Cup and the Grand AM Cup Series in the late ‘90s. Bob still competes in his ’93 Toyota Supra, in ITR at regional events on a regular basis, still being competitive and consistent. At his current age of 79, Bob has no plans to hang up his balaclava and Nomex any time in the near future! Let’s all rise and give a BIG round of applause to J. Robert Henderson, who has carried the SCCA banner for Finger Lakes Region proudly for the past 50 years! A heartfelt thanks for all he has done for race and for our region.
Bob Henderson’s first encounter with an automobile! Sally’s Story
Bob Henderson has always been a driver. For years, he drove his sister and brother half nuts, and he seemed to enjoy every minute of it. True, in the early years, he didn’t win many races or parental approval either. We all grow up in time. Actually, the event that turned his interest to cars occurred when he was only two years old. You may not remember, but in those days, some cars were giant gas eating monsters, and had the very appearance which scared lesser drivers off the road. Bob’s family
July 2013
had such a car. It was a Cadillac and it was big, especially to a two year old like Bobby! Bob liked to go riding with his mother, and, as he was the youngest, got to ride in the front seat. The other children thought this was unfair, but being the baby did have its privileges. It was a beautiful day. Mother was going to drive older sister Mary Anne to camp, and planned to take little “Bobby” along. A car like that served as a great baby sitter. Mother put Bob in the front seat, and returned to the house to get Mary Anne and her camp gear. Mother had parked in the “portcochere,” a cover over the entranceway. She told Bob to be a good boy, as she had to go back into the house to get the stuff. It was like telling Dennis the Menace that he was in charge! Mother distinctly remembered setting the emergency brake, and setting it firmly. However, as two year olds are prone to do, Bobby started playing with the car’s controls, especially fascinated by the emergency brake. He, of course, managed to push the brake release, causing the car to begin to roll! His mother screamed for him to stop the car, but he had not yet had the lesson on how to stop, so, the car gathered speed. At the lower end of the driveway was a large tree, the family’s pride and joy. As Casey Jones said when the speeding train was about to hit another train, “Boy, you had better jump!” Of course, there was no Casey to warn Bobby, making it a contest of which “pride and joy” would survive. Much to Bob’s disappointment, the trip ended far too soon, but those who saw the wreck said that the tree came out best. Bob was shaken up a bit, but not really hurt. Being a small fellow, he hollered as loud as he could, and Mother’s instincts took over. Bob escaped the spanking he truly deserved. Since then, his success as a race car driver really comes from this early lesson at age two, that you can go fast and still survive1 This story was told by Sally Forsyth, Bob Henderson’s sister, at the FLR Member Recognition Picnic. Sally had her audience howling with glee, at her rendition of the story.
2013 July
Bruce Barletta Bruce Barletta 45 years in FLR Bruce caught the racing bug in 1756 when he watched his first race. Continuing with his love of racing, he attended his first drivers’ school in 1970, with an Alva open wheel car. In 1972, he participated in the Car and Driver Showroom Stock race at Limerock, CT. He arrived late to register, so no one knew who he was. He started the race at the back of the pack, but quickly worked his way up towards the front. The announcers, not recognizing his car, began calling him the “Phantom Racer”. However he spun, and ended up in the back of the field. Again he worked his way back up, but spun out a second time. However, with determination and perseverance, he raced his way back a third time, finishing third overall. This made for a very exciting stared to his racing career. However, in the mid 70s, Bruce suffered a traumatic back injury, forcing him to take a break from competition. Then, at work, he met Carol Snedeker, known as “CJ”, who was beginning her own racing career in the early 80s. Bruce became her crew chief and mentor. He did all the prep work for the all female race team at the Firehawk 24 hour Endurance race at Watkins Glen. In 1986, Finger Lakes Region awarded Bruce the AMCO Transmission Mechanic of the Year Award, for his willingness and generosity in helping others achieve their racing goals. Bruce then decided to try racing again. He bought a 1964 Mustang .For those who don’t know, Ford came out with a mid-season model, which Bruce raced in GT. This was quite the feat, as the car did not have power steering. Beginning in 1990, Bruce and CJ spent the next three years building a new home in Rush NY, ..or rather built a four car garage, with a lift in one bay. Then a house was attached! Even though Bruce was still having back problems, he borrowed CJ’s1984 racing Camaro.
This car raced in American Sedan, He won numerous races in the AS class. He had done all the engine and chassis work himself. In the 1990’s Bruce won the Kryder Racing Championship in that car. He participated in his last race in 2000. After several back operations, it was necessary to retire from racing. However, even though he is no longer able to be a participant, he still maintains his passion and love of racing.

Rcognition for Marsha will be printed in an upcoming issue of TOP END. Ed.

It is once again that time of year when candidates are being sought for the BOD for the upcoming year. A nominating committee is being formed at the direction of Dave Ciufo. Contact Dave if you would like to serve on this committee. Representation from each of the activities, Race, RoadRally, RallyX and Solo is needed. Input from each of these areas will insure that the region remains active in all of the areas of activity of the Sports Car Club of America. Your leadership participation is needed to keep the programs you enjoy strong and viable.

rescheduled due to a conflict with the New England Forest Rally. A worker day will be scheduled for Perry’s Park. A tractor is available, but other equipment needs to be sourced. This expense is included in the budget. STPRŽ Rally America commented that the 2013 edition of STPR was the best event ever. The bright green worker t-shirts had a very nice design printed on the front. A number of anecdotes from STPR competitors and workers were related. They covered competitor speeds, competitor errors, car problems, worker experiences, lost equipment and bears. Rally is good for stories. Tulips in the route book are based on the need to brake at a lower speed or at the end of a long high speed section. Stage notes are more definitive. The revised Super Special procedure worked well. The Sunday RallyCross at the
July 2013
Fairgrounds used primarily the lower portion of the field with the addition of a few “new” roads. The addition of “roads” may create a problem in course design for 2014. The wrap-up meeting will be scheduled for early August. Miscellaneous Discussions Videos and pictures taken by Ben Gilmore will be shown at the August General Membership Meeting if a work commitment does not occur. The July General Membership Meeting will be at Murph’s in Irondequoit on Wednesday, July 10. The next Rally meeting is Tuesday, July 9. Tony Stewart is at the Canandaigua dirt track, why aren’t we there? LED driving lights are coming down in price. Both spot and floods are very bright. The routes and worker schedule for ESPR left a lot to be desired. An 18 mile stage through residential areas can be difficult to control. Plans are to carry the “Weiner” dogs in long saddle bags. Rick and Alan have access to post messages to the Yahoo Rally site.

KEN BLOCK AND ALEX GELSOMINO WIN 2013 SUSQUEHANNOCK TRAIL PERFORMANCE RALLY®
Rally America (http://www.rallyamerica.com/) June 02, 2013, Wellsboro, PA Hoonigan Racing’s Ken Block and Alex Gelsomino took their first overall
win of the season at the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally® (STPR®) – round four of the 2013 Rally America National Championship – held on May 31-June 1 in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. The victory marks the duo’s second STPR Rally overall win and it comes at a critical time when Block needed a victory to close the gap to current Rally America National Championship point’s leader, David Higgins and Craig Drew from Subaru Rally Team USA. Block never relinquished the STPR Rally lead from the event’s first stage and built a solid margin over second place finisher, David Sterckx and Karen Jankowski, this year’s top finishing Super Production Class drivers. After winning the last two Rally America rounds, Subaru Rally Team USA quickly lost ground when they broke a steering arm on stage 3 that knocked them out of contention. The team returned to competition on Saturday using SuperRally rules, which allows a team to compete for Championship points after a time penalty, and began Saturday in the 21st position and drove outright to salvage a third place overall podium finish. David Sterckx and Karen Jankowski’s overall podium paralleled their hard fought Super Production Class victory. Sterckx overcame a number of mechanical problems to keep adding to his STPR lead and as a result Sterckx will now assume the top of 11

the Super Production Class standings from Evan Cline who skipped STPR in favor of attending the next round. Third place in Super Production was originally awarded to Garry Gill and Paddy Robinson, but the team did not meet minimum vehicle weight requirements during after-race inspections. Gill was given a time penalty, which moves him to sixth in class and will be given the respective Championship points. Motostar Performance Racing’s Tim Penasack and Marc Goldfarb, who returned to Rally America national competition after taking a two-year hiatus, received third place in Super Production. Reeves led the category from the beginning and stayed just ahead of Scion Racing’s Andrew Comrie-Picard and Jeremy Wimpey. Reeves impressively finished fourth overall besting his fifth overall finish at the Oregon Trail Rally. Comrie-Picard survived three broken transmissions, a roll during testing, but more importantly finished second place to preserve his 2WD National standings lead.

Amazingly, Dillon Van Way and Andrew Edwards also came through a rough rally event to take third place despite a broken drive shaft, turbo power loss and a fused clutch. James Robinson and Jordan Guitar rebounded from not finishing at the Oregon Trail Rally to take the B-Spec Championship round win at STPR. Robinson keeps Honda on top of the B-Spec Manufacturers’ Championship while leading his B-Spec category. In the Jack Sherwood Forest Rally for Regional competitors, Justin Prichard and Ryan Scott won in their Subaru Impreza, while Mark Piatkowski and Robert Maciejski took the Finger Lakes Regional Rally.

STPR® memories from a suitcase
By Marilyn Randall and MaryAnne Curry Shults The “Asaph Picnic Area” is one of the most popular spectator viewing locations for the fans of the STPR Rally. With its fast, sweeping hard-packed road surfaces and sudden sharp turn over a narrow bridge across a creek, a rally team could literally find themselves in some not-sohot water with only a minimal loss of concentration. Paramedic and former STPR volunteer Mike James recollects one such incident at Asaph with clarity. “It was sometime in the ‘90s when a rally car got airborne and landed upside down in the creek,” he recalled. “The water was over the drivers’ heads and there wasn't enough time to wait for the ambulance to respond, so we took all the help we could get from the spectators who came to their aid.” Mike fondly remembers the quick actions of the stunned spectators. “These people held the car high enough out of the water, so the drivers’ could breathe until the car was stabilized and they were able to be stabilized,” he said. “Fortunately, neither of the

competitors were seriously hurt, thanks to the quick thinking my crew and the fans who helped.” Standing at the Asaph Picnic Area spectator area on Saturday, June 1, 2013, the second day of the Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally, presented by Citizens and Northern Bank, Mike James nostalgically recalled his decades of working as an emergency medical volunteer at this rally, based only minutes from the small borough of Westfield, Pa., he calls his hometown. However, the last few years, he’d watched as a spectator. A kidney transplant two years earlier, the organ donated by his best friend and fellow EMT Darren Hunt, had saved his life, but prevented him from volunteering. If he was going to watch and not work, he wanted to be close to the location where he worked all those years, and on that Saturday morning the first official spectator location, aptly named was his first choice. Tucked inside the lush, green, rolling hills of north-central Pennsylvania, the Tioga State Forest is protected by a canopy of trees covering an active ecosystem that is wide awake the last weekend in May. The only sounds are chirping insects and birds and the chatter of rally fans anticipating the first telltale sign of a turbocharged engine whistling in the distance as the rally competitors fly down the flowing curves of the first

This spectator area is a 30-minute drive from Wellsboro, Pa., at the junction of three roads in a valley. The rally cars approach from the west down a sweeping downhill Left Asaph Run. The STPR Spectator Guide describes the approach as a series of left turns with the fanfavorite left over the bridge, followed by a 90-degree left where the rally course begins to ascend up Right Asaph Run. However, history has shown that just a slight miscalculation could mean twowheels off the bridge, or worse. Mike’s son Derek, 17, shares his father’s passion for STPR and rally racing. When he found a suitcase full of memorabilia he got out his cell phone and started snapping images of bumper stickers and route books to post on the STPR’s Facebook Page. The memories flooded back, even though he was only a toddler for his first event. “My favorite memory is of the water crossing,” recollected the high school sophomore. “I was a big fan of Paul Choiniere and the all-wheel-drive Hyundai Tiburon… today you don’t see to many of those.” Derek said he lives right “over the hill from Asaph,” yet trying to explain to his local friends exactly what STPR is about required getting stuck on the road (closed to the public during the event) in the winter in his Mini Cooper. 15

You either have good finishes or good stories, we have good stories. By Tony Zanni, co-driver car # 944 Where does one start a story about their first Pro Rally experience? February. That’s where I’ll start. It actually started 4 years ago but that’s a whole other story. Back to February, that’s when Charli Tameris, Wellsboro, PA native and RallyX rookie asked me to co-drive for him at STPR®. That’s where we’ll start. From there, it was a lot of phone calls, hours on the internet ordering everything a rookie rally guy needs to compete, all the way down to Nomex Socks. The excitement kept growing with every week. So did the nerves. Did we have everything? Was it all going to pass tech? Was I going to fit into my race suit after all that ice cream? I am going to try and condense this. The car is a 1987 Porsche 944, painted blue and orange, to pay homage to the Gulf Series Cars, Charli knows 97.4% of all people in Wellsboro, and 68% of all people in Rally America. We spent most of Wednesday wrangling tires, and doing last minute things to the car. Thursday was Recce, a one pass reconnaissance of the entire rally. With Charli, it was like a weird redneck time machine tour of the hills of Wellsboro. Luckily I got him to focus enough to tell me how he wanted me to call the turns. After 16
Recce we took the car down to the practice stage. This was ridiculous fun. Charli even let me slide the 944 around the stage once. Friday started with Novice school for Charli and me. As a co-driver, I was on time. As the driver, Charli was… let’s say slightly less punctual, but he made it before anything important happened. There were a bunch of us new guys there. I think something like 18 cars or so were novices. I learned, drink and pee a lot and you will do good. In all seriousness, take care of yourself and your fellow competitors. They are your first responders at a rally. Next was when things got real. We hopped into our suits and headed down to the Green for Parc Exposé. Parc Exposé is a fancy French term for open parking, where fans and teams get to hang out. Rally is really the only sport where you can meet all the drivers and co-drivers, look into your favorite driver’s car, get cool posters and autographs for free from the teams, and get your photo taken with them. It is the most access to drivers and cars in any professional auto sport. It is a blast. It was also a great time to meet Charli’s family, his entire high school class, all his cousins, his cousins cousins, and a few of our friends from RallyX and our rally family. Finally on the road, GoPro’s mounted, camel backs filled, extra cooler filled, and rolling to the start of Waste Management SS1. Special Stage 1. What? Are we actually rally car drivers? Hell YES! 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO! Charli and I drove this year using Tulips,
which are really non-descript lines and dots in the route book to tell you what is coming up. Not the best way to run full speed down twisty-turny forest roads but still gets the job done. We got through the first three hairpins, notoriously the roughest corners in the entire stage. This year, totally smooth thanks to the hard work put in by the Waste Management guys. The rest was gravy. Or so we thought, then we found Jim Perrin and Lee MacLinniey stuck in a ditch, we even tried to pull them out. However, a Porsche pulling a Jeep Cherokee out of a ditch just ain’t happening. Funny part was, we were pullin’ smoking tires and then SNAP! Something broke. We looked and each other, and without hesitation, I yelled, GO! GO! GO! And off we went down the stage, kicking up rocks and dust from our rear wheel drive bad ass Porsche 944. Thankfully, Jim got unstuck. We finished SS1 in 14:40 even with stopping to pull Jim out we did pretty well. Now to put that into perspective, the lead guys, Ken Block, David Higgins, they finished that stage in 10:00.07 and 10:45.0 respectively. Special Stage 2 Rattler, basically the practice stage run backwards. Pretty uneventful for us. At the bottom, the only words I hear from Charli, “I could have gone faster.” I silently agreed, however, I knew Saturday was going to be more roads just like Rattler. SS3 is Waste Management II, it is SS1 only backwards. We fueled up with some brownies from the Hazard Rally Team Guys
July 2013
and then it was back in the car for SS3. If only the batteries on the GoPro didn’t die halfway through. We had our first close call, straight at tree. Charli did an awesome job of avoiding that with the front of the car. The back of the car did some sliding into things, and we added a few small dents, but hell it’s a rear wheel drive car, you won’t get there fast but you’ll look good doing it. By the end of SS3 we had caught 2 slower cars. Awesome right? Only if you had dust vision goggles. On one long straight I was looking out the window following taillights, when I should have been reading the book. Book said stay right. We were left. That’s when we lost the exhaust. A few tenths later the first car was pulling off to let us by, thank you Jeremy Keck. The second car was oblivious to the fact we were on their back bumper. Oblivious my ass. He clearly blocked us trying to pass twice, but hot damn did we do our best to get by him. Some folks even got it on film. Charli drove his butt off trying to pass them and we almost had them twice if only the Porsche could have found some grip. Either way we got through Day one. Off to the fairgrounds. Now Charli being a local boy knows about 97.4% of everyone in Wellsboro. Honestly we had more fans than Ken Block. It was awesome. And we totally got screwed in one run because one guy went the wrong way, I won’t mention any names, Anthony Concha, Mark Tinsdale. As we lined up for our second run, a big puff of white smoke came up from under the dash. 5. Tony, “What’s that?” 4, Charli, “Don’t know?” 3, Tony, “Is there fire?” 2, Charli, “No.” 1, Tony, “GOOOOOO!” And with that we were off with something to prove, and a show to put on for Charli’s hometown crowd. Charli was hauling down the straight for the pin turn at the end. Got hooked on the berm and Monster trucked the hell out of it, to the delight of all his fans. And across the line… Now I must go back just a bit. Just prior to us going down to the Super Special, Charli was turned into a 4th grade school boy when Ken Block, yes Ken Block, came over to the car, and said, “I love your car.” What a moment. Seriously. Made up for that time he didn’t sign Charli’s kids Matchbox car 3 years ago. Pretty awesome to say the least,
2013 July
The 944 out in the forest before finding a tree. Lori Lass photo though to have the number one guy in the sport come up and tell you he loves your car. Bad ass. Day 2 started out with a fruit, a glass of OJ, three trips to the gentleman’s room, a trip to CVS, one more trip to the gentleman’s room, and then off to the Green for Day 2, the forest roads. Fast sweeping turns, tight little straights, crazy hairpins, tons of spectators, and trees that just want to jump out and eat your quarter panels. Note to self, 3 Gatorades at the end of the day don’t do a body good. First up SS6, Phasa, Asaph backwards just to change things up a bit. Charli and I started strong. Notes were getting better and I could feel we were going faster. SS6 SS7 and SS8 were relatively uneventful for us. We were getting faster and taking time out of the car ahead of us as told by the dust in the air and the fact they were still at the control when we finished. Things were looking good. SS8 Cedar I is the last stage before service in Germania. Germania was our first real service where we had a limited amount of time to eat, service the car, fuel up and check out on time. Let me tell you 25 minutes is not enough time to do all that when one of your crew guys bails on you after the first day. Thanks to the Hazard Rally Team Crew for all the help we got out of service in time, ham sandwich and all. SS9 felt awesome. Car was working well, pace was picking up. We were doing great. End of the stage, drink more water… “Charli, pull over, PULL OVER NOW.” Now mind you in a regular car seat belts move with you unless you crash. In a rally car, they do not. Therefore, I expelling the
lunch I had consumed 20 minutes before all over my race suit, the car door, and my rally bag. I will never eat another ham sandwich at a rally EVER AGAIN. We got to the start of SS10, I got out cleaned myself off, cleaned the car off, and started SS10. Note to self-eat fruit, eat slower. SS10 was again, Awesome, Faster, better calls; we were cooking and making up time. We got to the end, entered the control and handed the guy my time card, and politely asked him to move back. “Why?” he asked, as I pulled off my belts and opened the door. “OH!” as he moves back. I held it long enough to get to the right at T past the control. It was 7 or 8 tenths to the next stage after that, I am pretty sure I puked the entire way. Charli almost did too, listening to me puke through the intercom. Which he smartly turned off. At the start of SS11 I asked someone for a bag, everybody was like what for? Obviously they have never co-driven a rally car and gotten sick. Luckily for me I never needed that bag. SS11, Cedar II, is one of the longer stages in the rally. We were going faster, Charli knew it, I knew it. A double caution R2 to L3 at mile 3.43 ended our rally. I feel I got behind on the notes, Charli did everything he could to slow the beast down but the loose stone and rear wheel drive didn’t do anything to stop us from going into a tree. Tony “Is you OK?” Charli, “Yeah I’m F@#$*& OK. Are you ok?” Tony, “Yes does the car move?” Charli, then put the car in reverse the 1st, I think we tried 3 times to get out, but it was done. Get the triangles and the OK sign. I was in such a hurry, thinking the
17
next car was going to be on us by this point as I tried to get the triangle set up I ripped the thing into 3 pieces. Pretty damn funny if you ask me. Triangles up and OK displayed, we assessed the damage, cheered our friends past us, and laughed, cried, and carried on. Took some photos, handed our score card in, and called it a day. Sort of. What ensued from there can only be explained by what I am calling the Charli Tameris Affect. Anthony Concha and Mark Tinsdale also broke on SS11. We were all brought by the sweep teams to the end of the stage. Where Charli and Anthony went for the crew, and the trailers, only to show up in Charli’s moms car to pick us up from the end of the stage. From there, it was get the trailers, stop at Charli’s mom’s restaurant, meet up with Concha and team to transit out to get the cars, only after having an ice cream. It was quite an afternoon from then on. We got all the cars out of the woods, and got back to see the final 6 runs at the fairgrounds. We shared stories, watched the winners celebrate, made friends and hung out in our post rally hang over. Upon further inspection, our 944 was only a little broken up. Charli had parts ordered for it the next day. Lower control arm, fender, aw screw it; just buy a parts car… which is exactly what he did. As a local team, you’d think, let’s fix it for next year and do it again. But not Charli Tameris. Nope. Let’s fix it for next month. Plans are in the works to take this show on the road and head up to the New England Forest Rally at the end of July. Hope to see you there. I could drone on for pages about my experience at my first every Performance Rally event, I’ve tried to highlight it and keep it real… I have a million thanks for starts, Super Big Thanks to Rich Smith for getting me into this crazy amazing sport, teaching me how to drive, take cars apart, and put them back together. Alan Smith, Eric Hobron, Matt Rhodes, Jerry Kerwin, and Tom Langdon for teaching how to be a good co-driver. Jamie Hayslip for the Hans. Jim Perrin for some driving tips and ridiculous times at RallyX. Brandon West for helping out at RallyX and at STPR. All my RallyX friends, too many to list, you know who 18
you are (JK, EV, MF, NM, GL, GM, PS, JL, DO, MR, JV, KT). Most of all, thanks to Charli Tameris for asking me to co-drive for him. Lastly, to Ms. Sarah Peterson for being amazing and supportive. I know I forgot a few of you so thank you!
