Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes May 4, 2010

Mike Toombs Regional Executive June is here and everything is going at high speed. The solo season is running with planning for the Finger Lakes National Tour moving forward. The planning for the Fun One is reaching its peak and our convention is right around the corner. I spent the third weekend of May at the Lime Rock National race. This is the second track I have visited this spring. Earlier in the month Marsha and I stopped by New Hampshire when New England Region was running a driver’s school, one day regional race and solo event. It’s interesting to visit other tracks that I normally don’t get to see. No track is without its issues and it is interesting to see what other regions do when they run races. I have picked up a couple of ideas that we may incorporate in our races. At the Lime Rock weekend we talked a little more about next years National Race schedule for the North East Division. I’ll report on what we talked about at the June meeting and in next month’s column.

Location: Burgundy Basin Inn, 1361 Marsh Road, Pittsford, New York 14534 Regional Executive Michael Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:04 p.m. The following are arranged by topic and may not be in chronological order. The April 6, 2010 General Membership Meeting minutes as printed in the May 2010 issue of Top End, were approved on a motion by Mike Brunner, seconded by Gene Dinkel. Membership Report – Mike Brunner Mike reported that our current membership number stands at 472, an increase of five from April. Twenty-nine members were present for the Solo and General Membership meetings. It was noted that the conversion from spouse to family membership, that a members membership number would not change.

Now back to this year. The Westward Ho! race is just around the corner. Scott Moller and Meredith Croucher have put a lot of effort into making this race a success. As many of you are aware we have never broke even on this race but have been close several times, maybe this year will be the one. Marnie Soom is once again planning the National Tour at the Seneca Army Depot. This is a great facility and the competition is always good. If you are not attending the National Race at Watkins Glen, stop by. Speaking of the National Race at Watkins Glen, they need your help. This is a double National Race that is run over three days, Friday through Sunday. The race needs everyone’s support. If you show up I’m sure that you will find a place where you are welcome and appreciated. On the off weekends there are the summer rallies that are being planned for this summer. Maybe I’ll make a return to the TSD rally scene. The last time I ran a rally was back in the early 90’s, before cell phones and GPS devices, back when we competed with a sundial.

Until next month… Mike

Treasurer’s Report All bills are currently paid. We have less than $500 in the checking account. Elizabeth Thiel determining the amount that needs to be transferred from the investment account into the checking and money market accounts. Financial details are available from Elizabeth for review.

pavement.

The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by Gene Dinkel, seconded by Mike Brunner.

Race Report Scott Moller reported that towing; ambulance, etc. are set for Westward Ho. Plans are still being made for food. Favors are still to be finalized. A starter is needed.

Solo Report – Brian Buchman The first event of the Solo season was a Novice School on April 24. Thirty students enjoyed a beautiful day. The first regular event on April 25 had 85 competitors on course for four runs. Results are printed in the June issue of TOP END. Ed. The rental charge from R.I.T. will be less than expected as there were only two security guards, not the contracted five. Alan Smith will be the novice chief for this year. Alan stated that he would not be novice chief until his son, Andy, started Soloing.

VIP tickets are $50/day. Super Special Stage tickets will be available prior to the event. The radio pre-check will be on May 22, meeting at Harlan’s restaurant at 7:00 a.m.

We have three entries already. Mike Toombs reported that he and Marsha had stopped at the New Hampshire race facility. The facility is nice, with paved parking lots, etc. while the racecourse could be better. The decision on the track that will hold the second NEDIV double National Race next year will be made at the Lime Rock national. Watkins Glen will have a double national both this year and next year.

The next Solo event will be the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend at the Seneca Army Depot. Marnie Soom will be chairing that event.

Old Business

Dave Avery reported that the Street Survival Teen Driving School on Saturday before the next Solo event is coming together. There are twenty-nine students entered. Additional instructors are needed to meet the requirements of one instructor per student.

The business portion of the meeting was completed at 8:47 p.m.

Rally Report The third event in the NY Shortline RR Series is scheduled for May 16, starting and finishing at Tom Wahl’s restaurant in Avon. This is the first of three social rallies that Rick Barnes is putting together for 2010. Frank Beyer is rallymaster for the Charity Rally running on Friday, June 4, as part of the STPR® weekend. Frank has also requested that we schedule a Doctor Devio event, Route of all Evil, on October 9. This will be run using the winter rally format in the area northeast of Syracuse. Meridith Croucher reported that the final paperwork has been finished for STPR®. There have been changes to the route due to gas drilling in the forest. Some of the roads have had stone put down and widened. This drilling will force changes in the routes through the forest. The Waste Management stages are being redone. There will be free camping at the Tioga County Fairgrounds. Volunteers are needed to control traffic at the fairgrounds, especially on Saturday. You will be done before the start of the Super Special. There is a volunteer only spectator area on the Waste Management stage. This will be open to the public next year. There will be truck traffic during the rally. The stage road is a new gravel road adjacent to the paved truck road. Speeds are about 80 on the gravel and 10 by the trucks on the

2010 June

Plans are being made for the Mini-Con in November.

Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary Program The film, “A Look At Sports Car Racing,” featuring Dave Wild was shown. This film by Dave, Bernie Michaels and Leo Raab, with narration by Phil Struman follows Dave and his Elva Courier at the Dunkirk and Watkins Glen in 1963. Comments from Dave: “The film was shot using a Yashica electric drive camera mounted to the roll bar of his Elva Courier. Members seen in the film include Chuck Krueger and Gary Morgan. The movie was submitted to “Movies on a Shoestring” in 1964. That film festival is now known a 360/365. The white Corvette Coupe was one of the original lightweight cars and driven by Dick Thompson. It featured instrumentation that allowed General Motors, who were not involved in racing at that time, to replicate any racetrack. Gary Morgan is shown in his Abarth Special, a car he still owns. Dave still owns the car, with MGB engine, which does not have the race camshaft they were wanting. The Dunkirk regional race was run in May, the Watkins Glen national race was run during the summer. The Dunkirk race, using the Dunkirk airport, ran due to the influence of General LeMay. The cost to race at that time was about $300. Things were simpler at that time, tires were skinnier and drivers were fatter. Safety belts were B-17 waist gunner belts.” 5

The film, “Rendezvous,” by Claude LeLouch was shown following the feature. Bench Racing New England Region had 25 students at the New Hampshire Drivers School; the Sunday Regional Race had 50 entries. The drive from New Hampshire back to Rochester, through Vermont is a nice scenic drive. A large difference in speed driving to the New Hampshire track can gain you at least three minutes. Lew Giesy reported that he was passed on Route 81 by a motorcycle rider pushing an out-of-gas motorcycle. The Glen Region’s July Sprints race will have as many female Stewards and Chiefs of Specialty as possible. Peter Hylton’s article “The Success of a Really Bad Idea” in Sports Car describes a reply to the “freedom breeds less expense” policy of the time. Bob Henderson reviewed the efforts of he and two other Board of Governors members in creating the Showroom Stock classes. There were several comments that it was a very good article. Bill Bell reported that insurance provider for SCCA and other race drivers, John Gorsline, is planning a life-changing event during the Monaco Grand Prix. Bill is expecting a full report from his neighbor’s son.

Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes April 27, 2010 Location: 753 Klem Rd., Webster, NY 14580 Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:39 p.m. Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; John Walsh, Assistant Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Barbara Lissow, Activities Director; Gene Dinkel and John Morris, Directors. Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order. The March 30, 2010 board of directors meeting minutes was approved on a motion by Gene Dinkel seconded by John Walsh. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel The Profit & Loss by Class statement for the period January 1 through April 27, 2010 was presented for review. The current checking account balance is $482. $3,000 was transferred from

the money market account to the checking account. Funds will need to be withdrawn from the investment account. The need for funds is partially due to being billed “up-front” for items that had previously been billed throughout the year. Current bills are for Top End printing and mailing, weekend memberships, Solo van insurance and for the Solo program t-shirts. The charge for the t-shirts was $1800. The Solo van insurance coverage is for the following four drivers; Alan Smith, Brian Buchman, Michael Toombs and Dave Avery. Income from the past weekend’s Solo events has not been reported. The next large income source will be Westward Ho. The investment account is up by 1.8% for the first quarter of 2010. The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by John Morris, seconded by John Walsh. Solo Report The April 25 Solo at R.I.T. had 85 entries with four runs in wet conditions available. Jake Bucknam was “Kingof-the-Hill” with new rain tires on his FJA Kart. The school run on April 24 had 30 novices entered. Rally Report The Shortline Series Rallies are set. The Charity Rally for STPR has a Rallymaster. Frank Beyer has requested a rally date for a TSD event to be run northeast of Syracuse on October 9. The last Shortline rally is scheduled for October 17 and a RallyCross is scheduled for October 24. Race Report The availability of drivers school’s was discussed. The race driver licensing process for new drivers needs to be reviewed in light of the changes in track events. The ambulance and towing are set for Westward Ho. The food arrangements have not been completed. Elizabeth will send Scott Moller information from past events. The entry fees for two drivers and one car were discussed.

June 2010

A motion to buy new tires for the race trailer was approved on a motion by Carl Dresie, seconded by John Morris. Membership The National Office is asking for information on who is participating. This may require that the membership number be included in the results and that all results be sent to Topeka. They also want a “rights” statement included in entry forms, allowing use of photos, etc. Can this be included in the waiver? Membership applications are requested within 24 hours, by fax. SCCA membership information is available at www.scca.com by clicking on Join Now. Information is also available at the region’s website, www.flr-wcca.com and clicking on Membership. Old Business Arrangements are continuing for the Mini-Con. Contact Elizabeth Thiel if you have a request or suggestion. Mike Toombs will contact Dave Avery with regards to recruiting instructors for the Street Survival School. New Business Vendor information on “brass badges” has been received. Interest for badges, buckles, etc. should be investigated. Miscellaneous An article on Donna Mae Mims is in a recent issue of Spokes, the newsletter of the Western New York Region of the MG Car Club.

HPD Announces New Club Racing Contingency Program SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (May 7, 2010) – Honda Performance Development (HPD) has released details of a new 2010 Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) National Contingency Award program, providing support for additional SCCA National Racing classes and initiating awards for Honda and Acura IT participants at the American Road Race of Champions (ARRC) at Road Atlanta. In SCCA National Championship Club Racing, in addition to the classes supported by previous programs, HPD has added support for the Super Touring category (STO, STU); Formula F racers using the Honda Fit engine; and additional classes – such as CSR, DSR and FA – in which competitors use Honda engines. Payouts include $200 for a National race win, $100 for second and $50 for third; and are retroactive to the start of the 2010 season. Additional enhancements for Honda/Acura competitors at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs will be announced in the near future. At the annual ARRC for Regional SCCA racers, HPD will provide cash awards to Honda/Acura sprint-race competitors in ITA, ITB, ITC, ITS and ITR, where a Honda or Acura victory in any category will pay $500, with $300 for second and $150 for third, provided there are at least 10 competitors in the class. To qualify for the contingency awards, Honda and Acura SCCA racers must be members of the Honda Racing Line, HPD’s support program for club and entry-level professional racers, and

must feature the required HPD/Honda Racing Line graphics on their cars. Membership in the Honda Racing Line is free to SCCA competition-license holders. Both the National and Regional contingency programs will be administered by the SCCA. National competitors must register and file claims with SCCA within 60 days of the contingency announcement to receive awards for races already completed in 2010. Regional competitors must register prior to the ARRC to qualify for awards. “We are thrilled to be able to expand our support of SCCA Club racers through the Honda Racing Line, assisting more classes and expanding into Regional racing with support of the ARRC,” said Marc Sours, Production Division Manager for HPD. “Honda and Acura SCCA racers have been tremendously loyal over the years, and it’s exciting to be able to reward their results at SCCA Nationals, the ARRC and the Runoffs.” SCCA National Classes included in the 2010 HPD contingency are EP, FP, HP, GT2, GT3, GTL, T2, T3, SSB, SSC, STO and STU. Competitors using Honda engines in FF, FA, CSR and DSR also are eligible for contingency awards. Launched in July 2009, the Honda Racing Line is a program targeted at licensed participants in sanctioned amateur and entry-level professional racing. Rally Tom and Deb Langdon Road Rally Chairs

Rally Meeting Notes May 11, 2010 96 Church Street, Victor, NY Eight RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present. The following discussions are grouped by subject.

Winter Rally Season

Corrections have been made to the season points to include credit for work and place in class corrections. Although the point counts are impacted, position in class is not. The 2011 Winter Rally Season training rally is tentatively scheduled for late October.

Spring, Summer and Fall Rallies

The May 16 RoadRally, Rochester & Southern RallyRoad has been course checked. Frank Beyer is the Rallymaster for the 21st Annual Charity Rally, the Relay For Life Rally to be run on Friday, June 4 during STPR. Registration opens at noon at the Tioga County Fairgrounds with the first car off at 2:01. Checkpoint workers are needed, as many of the people are busy with other STPR assignments. Our ability to continue to support this rally is a concern. Information for the Geneva & Southern Rallyway scheduled for July 17 will be printed in the June issue of Top End. This rally will start late evening and be similar to the Winter Series rallies using tulips for route following instructions. Check point workers will be needed. A “Hold the Date” flyer for a Central New York rally with Frank Beyer as Rallymaster will be printed in the June issue of Top End. That event is scheduled for October 9. More information to follow.

STPR®

The Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally Presented by Citizens and Northern Bank will start with a parc expose’ at the Green in Wellsboro at noon on Friday. Cars will leave from the Fairgrounds and parade into Wellsboro to the Green. They will leave starting at 2:01 p.m. and will run a new stage on the Waste Management grounds. Stage two will be Rattler run backwards from the practice stage. They will return to Waste Management for a second run there and then run the Subaru Super Special Stage at the Fairgrounds. Saturday will start with a parc expose’ around the

2010 June

Green at 8:00 a.m. A full schedule and more details can be found at www.stpr.org. Admission to the Subaru Super Special both Friday and Saturday is $5 per person, volunteers get in for free. There will be a “volunteers only” spectator area on the Waste Management Stages. The plans for STPR® were discussed further.

Miscellaneous Discussions The checkpoint signs are in Rick Barnes’ garage. Copies of RoadRally forms are needed. Reversing the direction of travel and renaming a rally will result in an event that is not recognized by the competitors. Cell phone service is now available in areas around STPR®. At the recent Team O’Neil Performance rally, team Hazard Rally, with Jim Perrin as driver, finished third in class. Several calendars are needed to verify that 436 days remain. They include Non-Sequitur, Pearls Before Swine, Get Fuzzy and Argyle Sweater. They can be found on the Internet, along with other comics. These, along with several cups of coffee, all help to prepare for the day. It was noted by the driver that the resurrected Subaru Legacy has a ride that is significantly “fluffier” than that of a Solo tuned Honda Civic. The quality at Donuts Delite, the corner of Culver and Empire, is as good as before the previous owner’s closed the store.
