REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive It is May already, who would have guessed it would come this soon. Now is the time of year for things to get going, at least for road racing and autocrossing. So are you competing or working or both? I got my Solo car out of winter hibernation last weekend. I know there are many other people who are doing the same, getting ready for their race or Solo season. We need the help of everyone to make our region a success, so what are you doing? We need people to take an active interest in the club. We did see a lot of people at the April meeting for program. I found it interesting and I can say once again, that if you weren’t there you missed an excellent presentation and discussion. Thanks Brian, John and Al. Since my last column I attended the Northeast Division Round Table. There was a lot of discussion on the NEDiv events scheduled for 2012 as well as plenty of training for specialties and stewards. The race schedule for the Division stands as previously published, there were no changes. There is going to be more discussion on National races that may change things for next year. This year the division will be pushing the NESCCA Championship. This championship will be different from the NEDiv championship in that the NESCCA championship is for Northeast Division races only; you must run four National races in the division to qualify. The NEDiv championship rules are dictated by the GCR and will accept races from outside of the division. So it is entirely possible that we could award the NEDiv championship and 4
NESCCA championship in one class to two different people. There is going to be an effort by the National Race Committee to promote the NESCCA Championship with flags and banners at all events. Hopefully this will generate some interest. The winter rally series was once again a success, now it would be great if we could turn that success to a summer rally series. I know that we can’t run the same type of rally that we do in the winter, but I think that we could promote a series that would bring some people out for summer rallies. Maybe it could be a series of one or two events and they might even be a destination rally; this has worked in the past. Hey don’t forget that we have moved the July meeting, we moved it to the second Tuesday and it is going to be a picnic. Hopefully you can make it, we all had fun last October and with the picnic in July this year we can all bring our gorgeous cars and have a mini car show. The May issue of SportsCar is an online digital version only. As the RE I find that I read a lot of the magazine and I found it a little difficult to read this issue. I know that a lot of the membership will either not read the issue or not have access to read the issue. Maybe a lot of people won’t care, but if you do care one way or the other please let the publisher or you’re area director know. They will be publishing one more electronic only edition later in the year and it may become more prevalent in the future. I was surprised at the National Convention with the number of regions that are still publishing monthly newsletters. I had assumed that more regions had gone to the online magazine only. I know that this is a great way to save money, the printing and mailing costs are substantial. I still feel that sending out the monthly newsletter is worth the expense and we will be continuing to send it out.
On that note I would like to challenge you, the members of the Finger Lakes Region, to get out there and support the region. Go to a Solo event, compete in that summer rally, go work a race. I hope to see you there. Until next month… Mike
Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes April 3, 2012 Location: Murph’s Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit, NY 14617 Regional Executive Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:08 p.m. The following is arranged by topic and may not be in chronological order. The March general membership meeting minutes as printed in the April issue of Top End were approved on a motion by Chris DeMinco, seconded by Todd Miller. Activities The July Solo and genera l membership meetings will be at Camp Eastman on July 10, 2012. This picnic meeting will include membership recognition. Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes will be presenting a program on the Targa Newfoundland at a future meeting, date TBA. Also to be scheduled is Mary Hartman describing the Petty Driving Experience. Membership Report – Mike Brunner Twenty eight members attended the Solo and general membership meetings. The region currently has 413 members, an increase of four since March 6.

NEDiv Roundtable – Mike Toombs The format of Roundtable was primarily that of training sessions. The hard card and annual waiver is valid for the term of your membership and does not expire at the end of the year. Mike can witness your signature on the annual waiver. New Business The May issue of SportsCar is digital only. You will not be receiving a hard copy. If you would like a hard copy, let Topeka know. Race Report The national race schedule stands as it was published last fall. The double national will be Memorial Day weekend at Nelson Ledges organized by the NEOhio region. The July national race at Watkins Glen, hosted by the Glen region, will not be a double. It will be a three day event, as it is a double national along with a Trans Am weekend. There will be both a NESCCA and a NEDiv champion this year. The NESCCA championship will count a minimum of four national races held within the division. The NEDiv championship allows up to three out of division national races. There is a potential for two champions in a class.
The Memorial Day weekend races organized by the Glen region at Watkins Glen is not a one-time only event. Westward Ho! Dave Ciufo reported that the last few updates to the supplemental regulations will be completed in the coming week. They will then be sent to the NEDiv Chief Steward for approval. The supps will then be sent to Topeka and a copy to the treasurer, Elizabeth Thiel. Rally Report – Alan Smith RallyCross Mike Toombs reported that the PerryWarsaw airport is a potential RallyCross site. We only need to avoid the paved and grass runways. Program – Brian Fallon, John Simonson, Al Costich Fran McAllister introduced Brian and team. They gave a participants view of the 2001, 2002 and 2003 running’s of La Carrera Panamericana. In the introductory remarks, Fran noted that the first winner of La Carrera was Hershel McGriff. Hershel spent some time in NASCAR and other stock car races until he retired at the age of 74. Also competing in the early running of La Carrera was a Rochester area resident, Speed McPhee. Route books and pictures from the events competed in by Brian, John and Al, along with Ed Diamond were passed around. Brian has videos, printed material and pictures he is willing to show to anyone interested. Call Brian to arrange a time.
Solo Report – Jeff Colegrove The June 16 Test ‘n Tune has been dropped, the June 17 Solo has been moved to July 1. We are looking to schedule an event at Delphi, sometime in May, with an intermediate school included in the weekend. The school will be a joint effort with Western New York region.
A few of the many comments made by Brian, John and Al are:
An event will be scheduled at the Perry-Warsaw airport. The course will require some creativity due to the narrow runway.
John commented that the best way to get from place to place in the larger cities way to pay a taxi and then follow the taxi to the destination. Also, that it was not safe to stay with a disabled vehicle after dark in marijuana growing areas. The Porsche 356 driven in 2001 completed the full route. The Porsche 912 for 2002 and 2003 suffered mechanical failures both years.
Alan Smith reported that a Solo novice school is scheduled for April 21. The number of entries is limited to about 30, but for the $50 entry fee everyone will get a ton of seat time.
PROVIDING THE RACING COMMUNITY WITH INSURANCE AND DISABILITY INCOME FOR OVER 40 YEARS.
about ten days prior to the next general membership meeting.
Top End – Carl Dresie A reminder, anyone that does not want a printed copy of Top End should send Carl an e-mail at cfdresie@cs.com asking that they be dropped from the hardcopy mailing list. The digital version of Top End will be posted on the region’s website (www.flr-scca.com)
Brian stated that Mil Cumbres was his favorite stage, closely followed by La Bufa. Where the 1950 through 1954 La Carrera was full race over most of the roads, the 1988 and following editions were more typical of stage rallies, with short stages separated by longer transits.
Al observed that the 8 to 10 p.m. “driver’s meeting” was typically a party that started late and ran much later. This left little time to service the car, make any required repairs and leave the next morning, as early as 3 a.m., in the service vehicle to support the next day’s efforts. 5
(History and some results of La Carrera Panamericana can be found on the internet. Search for “La Carrera Panamericana.” A number of videos have been posted on YouTube. Mil Cumbres videos will inspire winter rally series participants. An audio recording of the program is available from Carl Dresie. Secretary) Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary
Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes March 27, 2012 Location: Murph’s Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit, NY 14617 Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:32 p.m. Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; Dave Ciufo, Assistant Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Chris DeMinco, Mark Eksten, Fran McAllister and Charles Tanck, Directors. Others present: Jeff Colegrove, John Walsh Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order. The minutes of the February 28, 2012 board of directors meeting were approved on a motion by Mark Eksten, seconded by Carl Dresie. Activities Report What can be done to draw people from the various activities of the club into other activities? Brian Fallon, John Simonson and Al Costich will give a presentation on La Carrera Panamericana at the April meeting. The Targa Newfoundland presentation by Adrienne Hughes and Roy Hopkins needs to be scheduled. 6
The July membership recognition picnic committee has met and will be holding more meetings. New Business MaryAnne Shults may resign as web master due to work and school commitments. MaryAnn has also dropped out of being co-editor of Top End. Old Business The Mini-Convention will be hosted by the Glen region in the Ramada Inn in Ithaca November, 9 through 11. Other Information – Mike Toombs The Roundtable was primarily a training event. The national website (www.scca. com) has a video of the presentations for the Hall of Fame. The next to last is the acceptance speech for Charlie Earwood, given by Terry Earwood. It is worth the watch. Race Report B-Spec cars will run in SSC. We need to keep Club Trials (timed events) and PDX’s (untimed events) in mind. When and where could they be conducted?
An alternate driver’s school program has been approved. There will be a NESCCA series this year. Four national races within the division count toward the points. The NEDiv championship can include up to three out of division races. The schedule stands as published on the NEDiv website. Pocono is changing the road racing configuration to eliminate the bumps. Westward Ho! 2012 Revisions to the supplemental regulations need to be completed. John Walsh, Dave Ciufo and Chris DeMinco will get together to finish the revisions. A charge for entering online and withdrawing is to be included. That is to cover our cost for the credit card transactions. Fun One 2012 A race chair is needed. Rally Report The RoadRally and RallyCross budget was presented. The budget was a combination an expenses sheet presented earlier and an updated income sheet. The budget was for the 2012 RallyCross season, the 2012 summer

rallies and the 2013 winter rally series. The rally budget was approved on a motion by Chris DeMinco, seconded by Charles Tanck. There is space at the Warsaw airport for a RallyCross. Spencer Speedway (parking area) and other sites were also discussed. Can we get the ice racer group to attend a RallyCross? Is there any interest in running daytime/summer rallies? Solo Report – Jeff Colegrove The Solo budget was presented. Timing light, cables and printer are equipment expenditures for 2012. Glass etched beer mugs will be trophies for class winners. Year specific t-shirts will be given for each competitor. Five events are currently scheduled for Rochester Institute of Technology. Darien Lake, Warsaw airport and Delphi are being considered. The Avon kart track does not meet our safety regulations. Plans are to start the events earlier. This will save guard expenses as we will be leaving earlier. A cost breakdown was included in the information. Breakeven point for $30 entry fee is 77 entries, 69 for $32. The budget was approved with an entry fee of $32 on a motion by Dave Ciufo, seconded by Elizabeth Thiel. The Warsaw airport site is a possible site for the Street Survival School. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel Profit and Loss for January 1 through March 27 and balance sheet as of March 27 statements were presented for review. Not included in the statement were the van insurance and FedEx bill. A check in the amount of $6650 is to be mailed this week for a deposit on the Fun One ’12. The Westward Ho deposit is on hold until the sanction is received. The treasurer’s report was approved

Pfanner to Again Publish SportsCar after Acquisition from Haymarket IRVINE, Calif. (March 20, 2012) – A group led by automotive media and marketing veteran Paul Pfanner has re-acquired the publishing rights to Haymarket Media Inc.’s motorsports titles, including SportsCar®, the official publication of Sports Car Club of America, as well as RACER, the 7
publication founded by the group 20 years ago.
its quality and informed, authoritative voice.”
The purchase returns the titles to the management team that sold majority ownership to Haymarket in 2001.
Joining Pfanner in the new venture are longtime business associates and SportsCar veterans Bill Sparks and Jeff Zwart. Laurence Foster will remain on as Editor-in-Chief of the publications, as will SportsCar Editor Philip Royle and Associate Editor Jason Isley.
"The SCCA and SportsCar have been central to my life, my passion for motorsports and my career in the media business and I am excited to be able to re-establish our relationship at this moment of change and opportunity for both organizations,” Racer Media & Marketing, Inc. President & CEO Paul Pfanner said. “I am grateful to Jeff Dahnert and his staff for their faith in our SportsCar magazine team and for making a smooth transition possible." “SCCA is experiencing a great deal of change, and we celebrated this at our National Convention earlier this month,” SCCA President & CEO Jeff Dahnert said. “This is another exciting development for the Club. Paul Pfanner and his team were at the helm of SportsCar through SCCA’s greatest era of growth. SportsCar has an excellent editorial staff in Irvine, and with a motorsports-based management team back at the helm, we expect great developments with our publishing and communications efforts going forward. Pfanner published his first issue of SportsCar in January 1984, and served as president of the magazine’s publishing company through its transition to Haymarket, along with RACER and Racer Communication’s custom publishing arm, in 2001. "Following discussions over the past several months, we are pleased to have finalized this deal," Pfanner said. "I thank Haymarket for their able stewardship of the business and I am grateful to [Haymarket Media, Inc., CEO] Lee Maniscalco and the Haymarket team for making it possible for the company to go forward under our leadership. King’s experience is 18; Daytona is more expensive than Orlando.) A friend who came to spend a week with me in Orange City came with me to be my personal photographer. I offered her the three lap ride around, but she declined.
Richard Petty Driving Experience By Mary Hartman
It’s not Daytona, but… I was ordering a beer with Lew and Wilma Giesy at Applebee’s in Orange City, Florida. My phone rang; unknown number. When I answered, it was a representative of the Richard Petty Driving Experience. I was scheduled to do the Rookie Experience at Daytona on Saturday, March 24. It is now Wednesday March 14. For those of you who watched the Daytona 500 or the news that night, you saw the fire when a car hit a newly filled dryer truck.
We got to the track early, not knowing how traffic would be to get there. We checked in, then wandered the store as I planned what I would spend some of my money on – a t-shirt and hat. I had my race gear with me, except for my new Hans device, as I still have to get my new helmet. Since we were required to wear Hans for both riding and driving, I used their head gear. I decided to use the Petty uniform for the sake of cooler pictures. I used my race shoes and socks. (FYI – had my favorite Fun One t-shirt on for the day!) I met the gentleman who would help me with my helmet fitting, and headed out for my three lap ride along. The ride is with a professional driver at somewhere between 140 and 160 mph. I am sure I never had a bigger smile on my face!
I got to talk to the guys working in the pits. Some of them were from the Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse areas. One had raced a corvette at the Glen. When asked if the cars being used were retired NASCAR race cars, they said they were replicas of NASCAR cars, but built for Petty. The coloring and names used were those NASCAR drivers who had supported Petty in some way. When 12:15 rolled around, we all headed to the classroom for our training session. There were 11 in our class, three females and eight males, including a husband and wife team. We had an orientation to the car, equipment, safety issues, and procedures. Guests were encouraged to sit at the back of the room while drives sat at the front. We then went out to the pits; each driver was assigned an instructor, who was in a lead car. We are to follow the instructor’s car, staying three car lengths behind. A green light will signal if we need to speed up, and yellow if we need to slow down. Two to four cars went out at a time.
It was decided the track needed repaving. Since it was currently bike week, paving was scheduled for the weekend following – MY weekend! The website states they do not give refunds, just rain checks. Petty’s group is only at Daytona the weekend of the repaving, so now what!?!?!? They had an offer I could not refuse. Instead of the 2.5 mile Daytona track on the 24th, I will be doing the King’s Experience at the one mile Orlando oval (did not know at this time that Indy ran there for five years in the 90’s!) on Wednesday the 21st, with a gift card and track ride around to more than make up the cost difference. (Rookie experience involves eight driving laps;

I was about the fourth or fifth participant to be called to a car. Being height challenged, I was graciously assisted with a stool to climb through the window. I was assisted with the safety equipment, and then given the instruction to put in the clutch. The pit assistant hit the on switches, while I revved it up to 2000 rpm. My instructor’s car then took off, and I was signaled to follow. The challenging part was to keep up with the instructor’s car while exiting the pits on a curve and shifting up to second and third while at 4000 rpms. I fluctuated between 3000 and 5000 before finally getting the magic number. Meanwhile, my instructor was not waiting! I got the green light already while trying to get up to speed in the pit exit. I did finally get there, and shifted up to 4th, where we were to keep it while on track. We were instructed to just follow our leader, and not pay attention to dials, unless the red light for oil overheating went on. We also were to ignore other traffic, as our leader would drive us around. Being an old racer, I did a couple times out of habit look at gages, and look at merging traffic from the pits. I got the green light a few times during my first eight laps out on track. I did my usual wave to the start/finish flag. Back in the pits, our group leader just said to keep up better
my next time out. I did not get much of a break when I was called back into a car. I was determined to get out of the pits smoothly and to keep up with the instructor’s car this time. Success! I shifted up through 3rd while exiting the pits, and easily into 4th as soon as I got out on track. I stayed with my instructor’s car, despite merging traffic. In fact, the green light only went on once when he sped up and went wide to avoid the merging traffic. The yellow light went on once as he slowed down to enter the pits. The whole ride and drive experience is on a memory stick that we were provided at the beginning of the day. Professional photos were also taken. Of course, I bought the whole package! We then had a graduation ceremony. We got lap charts with times and speeds, a certificate of completion, and a gift card good for $200 off a driving experience over the next couple years, anywhere but Daytona and Indy. I opened up my envelope to see my results. My times increased as I was out on the track (yeah!). My fastest first session was 121 mph, and second session was 126. A fellow classmate whose fastest the first session was 122 (he did not do a second session) said he thought I had the fastest time, that I looked faster than anyone out there my second time (double/triple yippee!!!) I was higher than a kite the rest of the day. On Thursday I woke up visualizing my time on track the previous day. I thoroughly intend to use my gift certificate – questions is – try to beat my time in Orlando, or try another track. Time will tell.

La Carrera Panamericana 2002 or Los Tres Viejos Locos! Ride Again By Brian Fallon (Reprinted from the December 2002 Top End) After a rather uncomfortable ride in a too-stripped-out Porsche 356 last year we decided to up the comfort and technology level this year with a 1966 Porsche 912. The '66 was one year over the age limit for La Carrera but as it was unchanged from a '65 the organizers accepted it. It offered more room inside, a more modern suspension and a fivespeed transmission while retaining the Porsche 356 SC engine that we were familiar with. Scott Harvey had won the class last year with a 912 so it was a logical choice. We would be running in the Historic A class for four cylinder cars up to '65.
the vintage-racing season progressed. Mid September to mid October blurred by as we frantically tried to get the car ready. It was running too rich, fouling spark plugs and we were unable to determine why. A change to the factory recommended street plugs instead of the racing plugs helped but not enough.
The car was purchased in May and preparation started in June but always took second place behind the maintenance required on the 356 as
A call to Vic Skirmants, the mid west and east coast Porsche guru, resulted in an invitation to come to his place in Warren, Michigan on the day we were to
The 912 prior to running the 2002 La Carrera Americana Photo courtesy of Brian Fallon leave for Mexico, so he could have a try at sorting it out. So, at 4 AM on the 14th Al Costich and I, towing the Porsche on a trailer with a Jeep Cherokee, left for Mexico by way of Canada! We arrived at Vic's place around 10 AM and he immediately set to work to straighten out the carburetors. After about four hours he had it about 90% right. The car ran well from half throttle to wideopen but was still rough and rich below that. Although we couldn't tell that at

the time as Vic's road test was a mostly flat out blast down his local streets and expressways with some handling tests on the off and on ramps. We left Vic's about 2 PM and got as far as Indiana before stopping for the night. The next day we made my brother's house in western Kentucky and stayed there for a day. The following day we stopped for the night south of Dallas, Texas. We arrived in Laredo, Texas on the 18th, procured liability insurance for Mexico for both cars, changed our dollars for pesos and spent the night in the Rio Grande Plaza hotel right on the river. Our adventures really began on the 19th as we attempted to cross the border. We went to Bridge #1as it was closest to our hotel. The US supervisor advised us not to cross there but rather at Bridge #3 or #4, as "The Mexicans are ready for you La Carrera guys there". We went to Bridge #3, the International Trade Bridge and saw the traffic was almost all trucks. As we crossed the border I noticed the usual customs posts were absent. We drove down about a mile of road and came to a huge truck parking lot and warehouse area. We parked and went in search of someone who could process us into the country. After about an hour the Mexican supervisor determined that we were at the wrong bridge and we had to go back to the
The “Office” Photo courtesy of Brian Fallon US. The line of trucks waiting to cross into the US was four lanes wide and a mile long. Finally, when we got to the US Customs they didn't buy our story of inadvertently having crossed at the wrong place and required that we have the rig X-rayed before we could proceed. Another hour of waiting in a long line of trucks to pass through a gigantic X-ray machine before we were cleared. Finally we got to Bridge #2 and into the normal flow of automobile traffic into Mexico. We went to the "Aduana" or Mexican

Customs building for the importation of cars and then the fun began again. Ed, when he drove the rig out of Mexico last year had neglected to turn in the necessary documents. The customs clerk discovered this as soon as she typed the VIN of the Cherokee into her computer. Now, we had to spend another hour filling out forms and getting the chief of customs to OK it before we could bring the Cherokee into Mexico again. Finally after several more hours of dealing with the bureaucracy we had the necessary documents and were on our way. We got to our hotel in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico about 3:45 PM. It had taken us almost seven hours to advance four or five hundred yards south. At the hotel we met the first of our companions and new friends that would make up the convoy to Tuxtla Gutirrez. It had been organized by the new US La Carrera representative, Gerie Bledsoe. Gerie won Historic C (8 cylinder cars) this year. Over the next day more cars and crews continued to arrive including a group from Car & Driver magazine with a '53 Ford. We left at 7 AM from Nuevo Laredo in a twelve-car convoy escorted by the
May 2012
"Federales", the Mexican Federal Road Police. The Federales seem to be similar to our state police in their functions but are a national police force. They were uniformly professional and competent in all our dealings with them. After driving all day we arrived at a truck stop about fifty miles north of Mexico City where we waited until about 11 PM to cross the city. Even at night with a police escort crossing Mexico City is difficult. It is about fifty miles across and has about twenty two million people (all of whom have cars). Some teams will drive hundreds of miles out of their way to avoid it. We finally arrived at our hotel in Puebla around 2 AM. We were up at 5 after three hours sleep ready for another long day. We left about 6:30 and arrived in Tuxtla Gutirrez, our destination and the starting point for La Carrera at 9 PM that night. We drove almost 2000 miles in 38 hours. There were only three of us left of the original convoy of 12. The others having dropped out with mechanical problems, fatigue or disagreement over the route. So far we had driven almost 4000 miles and the race hadn't started yet. John Simonson, our Co-driver, had flown in that afternoon and reserved two rooms. So our immediate need for showers and rest were taken care of. However, the lobby was full of old friends from last year and as tired as we
were, bed was not an option until we had dinner with Bobby and Zoya Johnson who come all the way from the Aleutian Islands to race in La Carrera. Bobby finished last year on three cylinders in his '53 Hudson coupe. The next morning we took the car out to the fairgrounds and secured a garage. All the processing for the race takes place there. We got the car and our gear through tech, had our physicals and received our Mexican competition licenses. That afternoon Ed Diamond flew in completing our team. On Thursday we finally received the graphics and number packages and spent most of the day applying them. Our car, Ed's helmet and gloves were selected as props for a Tag-Heuer advertising photo shoot so we may see it in an ad someday for the Heuer “Carrera" watch. There were large teams from Italy and Germany entered this year. The Italian team had such notables as former F1 drivers Clay Regazzoni and Arturo Merzario. Also driving an Alfa in the Original Pan Am class was Prisca Taruffi, the daughter of Piero Taruffi a brilliant engineer and driver in the 40s and 50s and author of one of the first books on race driving "The Technique of Motor Racing". Sadly, the ability of some of the Germans was not up to the demands of the cars they were driving
and all three of the Mercedes-Benz 300SLs were wrecked before the race was over. Friday, October 25th, was the start of **the race, **with Ed driving** and John Co-driving. Alan and I were in the "Servicio" Cherokee. We left about two hours before the first car in order to be set up and waiting at the first service stop about 150 miles down the road at La Ventosa. We were held up for an hour by a big truck burning in the road. There was no fire equipment available and we just had to wait until it burned out. However, we made it with plenty of time to spare. When Ed and John arrived at La Ventosa they complained of overheating. We bungeed the deck lid up and ran the rest of the event in that configuration. It was ugly but effective. The oil temperature stayed in the green for the rest of the race. That night in Oaxaca (pronounced Whahaca) we had a lot of minor problems to work on but nothing too serious. Ed and John were 4th out of 12 in class and 50th overall out of 79. Saturday, Oaxaca to Puebla, found me in the car with John for my first stint as driver. I can't remember much about the day except I couldn't find any rhythm as a driver and dropped us down to 8th in class.

A pair of Mercedes 300 SLs prior to one of them getting bent. Photo courtesy of Brian Fallon Sunday, Puebla to Morelia through Mexico City, was Ed's turn again. Alan and I got lost crossing Mexico City but finally made it to our hotel in Morelia by hiring a taxi driver to lead us there. I was standing at the entrance driveway chatting with a Brit who was crewing on a Mini. He had no sooner finished saying "Porsches ....bloody good cars, mate, dead reliable" when ours came in on a flat bed. The throttle linkage had broken on the first special section thus costing them the whole day. We jacked the car up and I crawled under to find the rubber buffer in the throttle linkage had broken. We didn't have a spare. Alan, ever resourceful, found a crew with some machine shop capabilities and in a few minutes made a steel replacement. Meanwhile, a Mexican friend of mine, Luis Unikel, who finished 3rd overall in his '54 Ford, came by to see what the problem was. His chief mechanic looked at the pieces and said "I can fix that" and half an hour later came back with the part as good as new. He had revulcanized the rubber in a hotel parking lot! Amazing.... it could only happen in a country where people have had to be very resourceful to keep their cars on the road. The next morning I was back in 14
the car with John again. We were driving the "Mil Cumbres" or 1000 Peaks sections and my driving finally started to improve. This area is very mountainous and it is like driving in the Adirondacks but on even tighter, twistier roads...great fun. We did three special sections and then it started to rain. It poured off and on for the rest of the day. All the afternoon stages were cancelled. At dinner that night the results were announced and we had moved up 20 places overall and back into 5th in Historic A. Day Five and it was Ed's turn again. It was to be a noon start from the mall parking lot where we finished the night before. The racers were to go to the racetrack at Aguascalientes for six hot laps and then proceed to Zacatecas for their first run over La Bufa. La Bufa is a mountain outside of Zacatecas with a long, smooth, sinuous but fast road over it. There are few guard rails and many long drop offs. La Bufa is taken very seriously by everyone. (Alan deCadenet crashed heavily there in a "C" Jaguar in '91.) Alan Costich and I were waiting at the service stop near the finish of that stage. The cars would be serviced and then run back the other
way over La Bufa into Zacatecas for the ceremonial finish to the day. While we were waiting Bobby Johnson drove up and said that the Porsche had broken its crankshaft on the racetrack and was being trailered down to us. An hour or so later another team, who had gone to the track to spectate, brought our car in. Our second try at La Carrera was over. We loaded the car on to our trailer and went to the hotel in Zacatecas. The next morning we adjusted the loads so all four of us could ride in the Cherokee and started home. We crossed the border that evening after stopping to do the correct customs procedures for taking the cars out of Mexico. Ed continued with the rig intending to drive it back to Connecticut. Alan, John and I flew out of Laredo Thursday morning and were home that afternoon. We are listed as finishing 64th out of 79 and 10th out of 12 in class. It was a sad end to a good try. We didn't do as well as last year when at least we finished. However, we all feel we have the right car for the job now and that when we go back next year we can do much better. Los Tres Viejos Locos! want to thank:

Larry Eksten, Rick Hoyt and Mark Eksten of Eksten Autoworks, Barry Brown and his crew at Riter Vintage Auto, Gary Moore of T-Shirt Express and Vic Skirmants for their help and friendship. Without their abilities and expertise our team would never have even gotten to Canada let alone Mexico. I personally want to thank Ed Diamond, John Simonson and Alan Costich. No one ever had better teammates and companions on a very grueling and ultimately frustrating trip and race. Finally a big “Thank You" to my wife "Kelly" and in fact to all of our wives and loved ones who continue to put up with our "NEXT last great adventure".

Rally Tom Langdon Interim Rally Chair
Rally Meeting Notes
This may not be a rally event, but more in the style of a hillclimb or race trials event. STPR® Tony passed around a proposed t-shirt graphic for use on the STPR volunteer t-shirts. Additional content could be “www.stpr.org,” car number, bank sponsor, etc. Is it necessary to have “volunteer” on the back of the t-shirt? How do we identify a volunteer during the event? Carl and Alan will send Tony a few graphics.
96 Church Street, Victor, NY
Kurt Thiel has volunteered to head up the effort for the charity rally held in conjunction with STPR.
These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order.
A spectator chief is needed; the past chief has a conflict.
The following seven RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon, Alan Smith and Tony Zanni.
Tony and Rich Smith are planning to compete in STPR 2013 and are planning to do it as money per mile charity effort.

RallyCross Series The Warsaw-Perry airport is willing to host both a RallyCross or Solo event. Series dates requested are the last weekend of the month through October, then November 10 or 18 and December 15. Events could be coordinated with the Central New York region. It was noted that while Perry’s Park is subject to damp weather, the Central New York sites are less susceptible. ITA spec roll cages are legal in the European spec RallyCross events being run at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Summer Rally Series We need to plan events for a summer series. Possible events and dates need to be set by the May rally meeting. Possibilities include repeating a Monte Carlo style event from several years ago, a destination event, picnic event, and a social rally. Late July or August dates would be the easiest to schedule. Tony raised the possibility of conducting a closed road summer event. 16
Alan described the tweaks being made to the Super Special. There will not be a jump this year. A gas well is being drilled in the middle of the pine tree section of the Waste Management stage. Winter Rally Series The check point signs made by Eric Hobron are very nice, with an improved design including an updated latching mechanism. We need to verify that Eric has been reimbursed for the signs. Guidelines for the winter series need to be available to the rallymasters and the pre-check crew. Items that need to be addressed will be discussed at the May rally meeting. Members should bring concerns and suggestions to that meeting. A training rally needs to be scheduled in late November or early December. It could be done as a standalone event and advertised as an opportunity to experience what a winter series rally is like, but in a lower key setting. Carl will refine “The Wrong Way Home” for this purpose.
with the logo printed on them. Stickers could then be applied for place. Is there a more permanent adhesive the can be used? That used for the 2012 series was not dish washer safe. Miscellaneous Discussions Tom will be scheduling a seminar style meeting to qualify as many Rally Safety Stewards as possible. Training material is needed. Anyone having safety steward training materials should send a copy to Tom. Tom passed around a plastic box, available for $1 at Staples that could be used to replace the snap top plastic containers for the rally timing clocks. Bed, Bath and Beyond has been the source of rally trophies and other supplies. Arm “slings” for use while driving can consist of things from that provided by the surgeon’s office, to a zipped jacket, to shoulder portion of the seat belt and other convenient items. Tom will be getting a new e-mail address. VWs are set up so that the throttle is cut when the brake pedal is applied. That has a negative effect on left foot braking, which is used to control a rally car’s attitude. The April general membership meeting was a “bench racing” session led by Brian Fallon, John Simonson and Al Costich describing La Carrera Panamericana. Several YouTube videos of the stages are exciting. Another program with rally interest will be the Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes program on the Targa Newfoundland. That program has not been scheduled. A number of tires and wheels are available from the people in the group. How stock are the cars running in the Rally America national events and where could you buy one?
Rally trophies could be beer glasses

This guy had just bought a brand new Ferrari F-50 and while stopped at a red light his little boy on a mopehead stopped next to him. The boy asked the man how fast his car could go and he said, "Oh, around 175-200. Want to see?" Of couse the boy nodded and waited for the light to turn green. The man took off at a very high rate of speed. As he was traveling down the road he saw a little light catching up with him and then flew right past him. Then the light came flying back and went way behind him. The guy then realized that it indeed WAS the boy on the mopehead. Then the light started to catch up with him again. He slowed down a bit to catch up with the boy to find out exactly how he got the little bike to go that fast and in a stunned voice the boy looked at the man and said, "Would you mind taking my suspenders off your rear view mirror?"
