REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive I keep hoping that things will slow down. Then I remember that this is the Finger Lakes Region and we are always doing something. I had someone from the national office tell me that our region is one of the “full-service” regions and I believe him. The race season finished up for us with the Fun One. The Solo program finished up a couple of weeks later with their event at RIT. But wait – the RallyCross program is just getting started and the RoadRally group is planning their Winter challenge series. We really don’t have a down season! The Fun One was a resounding success as I predicted last month. The celebration of out 45th annual event was fun and well done. There were several people who made the trip to this year’s event who were around for the first one. There was plenty of interesting racing going on all weekend. The Saturday night pig roast was once again a rousing success. The two cakes were well done and appreciated by everyone who had a piece. Thanks to Bob Henderson, John Walsh, Elizabeth Thiel, and Marsha Toombs for all of their work on the event. I need to also thank everyone else who helped out and made the weekend happen, you are too many to mention, but nonetheless deserving of my thanks.
for stepping up and doing this again this year. We will be looking at doing this again next year, hopefully earlier in the year and at a different location. I also need to thank Brian Buchman for stepping up and taking on the Solo program this year. They once again put together a successful season. The last event was at RIT the first weekend of October and the course designed by Todd Miller was one of the best courses we have had at RIT in quite some time. This event and the one at Xerox last month are proof that you don’t need the huge concrete parking lot to have fun. Unfortunately we had to cancel the region picnic. The response was underwhelming and we would have had enough food for twice the number of people who had said they would be there. We will have to look at this for next year, depending on what we are trying to accomplish, I’m not sure that we should continue this picnic. We will probably give out this year’s high points awards at the annual banquet in January. Speaking of the annual banquet, it looks like it will be at the Burgundy Basin Inn in early January. This leads to the question, do we need to have
a membership meeting in January as well as the banquet. The board will be discussing this and we will let you know. Scheduling for next year is going strong. We are going to have the Westward Ho! race at Nelson Ledges on June 26 and 27. Scott Moller and Meridith Croucher are going to be chairing this event. The Fun One is going to be the weekend of September 18 and 19. Elizabeth Thiel and John Walsh are going to chair this event. In November we are hosting the Northeast Division Roundtable. It looks like it is going to be the second weekend in November and at the Woodcliff in Fairport; stay tuned for more information. Before I forget, I would like to thank everyone who voted in the annual elections. I would especially like to thank everyone who ran for office. I realize that it is a time commitment and I appreciate those people who are willing to. The election results are listed elsewhere in Top End. We also passed the change to the bylaws at the annual meeting. Until next month… Mike
The same weekend of the final Solo event, we had our second Street Survival® School. We had 14 students, including an entire family who drove from Utica, three out of the four taking the course. I can only hope that they all took something away from the class and will be better drivers because of it. Once again I need to thank Dave Avery 4

Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes October 6, 2009 Location: Burgundy Basin Inn, 1361 Marsh Road, Pittsford, New York 14534 Regional Executive Michael Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:11 p.m. This is the 54th anniversary of the 1st annual meeting. The following are arranged by topic and may not be in chronological order. 45 members attended the Solo and general membership meetings. Top End had not been delivered to all members present. Therefore the minutes of the September general membership meeting will be approved at the November general membership meeting. The approval of the minutes was tabled on a motion by Jim Craven. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel All the bills presented to date have been paid. The bank statement was received on October 6. It has yet to be reconciled. The balance reflects the transfer of funds from checking to the investment account. More will be transferred after the Fun One bills are paid. The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by Gene Dinkel, seconded by Tom Langdon. Race Report Fun One – Bob Henderson Comments will be reserved for after the meeting. (See “Bench Racing.”) Other Race Race dates for 2010 will be June 26 and 27 for Westward Ho and September 18 and 19 for the Fun One. Other race dates and those that will be double events will be set at the Mini-Con in November. Lew Giesy reported that Charlie
2009 November
Cook was our lone driver representative at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs®. Charlie started 19th in GT2 and finished in 11th.
Mike extends apologies to Chris McAllister for misleading her on what will be used for awards.
The Last Chance at WGI, the Pumpkin Affair and a PDX at Nelson Ledges are upcoming events. Rally Report – Tom Langdon The September 26 RallyCross at Perry’s Park had 24 drivers and 10 runs.
Activities Report – Brad Johnson The annual picnic will be held at the Scottsville Fire Department Recreation building on October 18. Planning for the Year-end Banquet has started. It will be at the Burgundy Basin Inn on January 9, 2010.
The next RoadRally is a social rally on October 11 starting at the House of Ale in Piffard. If you can follow route instructions, you will not get lost.
Old Business A round of applause for the Fun One staff was approved on a motion by Gene Dinkel, seconded by Jim Craven.
The Winter Series training rally will be rescheduled due to a conflict with the Solo picnic. The Winter Rally Series is shaping up. The December awards party will be scheduled for Cheap Charlie’s in Bloomfield. More information is to come.
New Business Meridith Croucher is collecting for the Hillside Children’s Center. She will take memorabilia including new apparel, however nothing with alcohol or tobacco advertising.
Solo Report –Brain Buchman There have been two events since the last meeting; the first on September 13 used lot 207 at Xerox in Webster had 73 entrants. Our last event of the season on October 4 at RIT, with 81 entries. The Solo picnic will be November 15 at the Scottsville Fire hall. A flyer will be on our Web site and in the November issue of TOP END. The possibility of combining the street tire classes is being discussed. Dave Avery reported on the Street Survival School held Saturday, October 3 at RIT. There were 14 students. Thanks to all who helped with the school and covered all the details that needed to be done. Next year the school needs to be scheduled so as to not conflict with the BMW Octoberfest. That event pulled some instructors away from the school. Publicity is also needed. Membership Report – Mike Brunner The membership count stands at 470 as of October 6, up 10 from the September 1 number. Letters will be sent out for longevity awards at the January banquet. RSVP’s will be required if you will be attending the banquet. They will be delivered upon request.
A list of licenses was available.
The Rochester Auto Show will be March 3-7, 2010. Volunteers to staff the Finger Lakes booth will be needed. The changes to the bylaws, as printed in the October 2009 issue of TOP END, were approved as published. Scott Moller reported that a survey was taken at the Fun One. There were 91 returned and preliminary results were reviewed. No outstanding changes were indicated, however, an item of note is that if the party is to be changed it should be onsite and less expensive. The results were slightly different between drivers and workers. A report will be provided when all tallies are finalized. Election results are: Regional Executive, Mike Toombs; Assistant Regional Executive, John Walsh; Treasurer, Elizabeth Thiel; Activities Director, Barb Lissow; Secretary, Carl Dresie; Directors, Dave Ciufo and Scott Moller. The meeting was adjourned at 9:17 p.m. on a motion by Scott Moller, seconded by Jim Craven. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary

Bench Racing Charlie Cook shared this was his first visit to Road America since being there as a spectator while in college. At that time, several premier series ran at Road America. Several more visits will be required to learn the fast way around the track. The “kink” is a hair-raising turn with the wall close to the track. Charlie commented that the ability of some drivers to negotiate that turn without lifting baffled him. Lew Giesy reported that travel time to Road America was about 12 hours, plus an additional nine hours waiting for a parts store to open so that he could buy a maxi-fuse. He recommends visiting the Ford museum when around Detroit. Mike Toombs reported that the drive time to the Solo Nationals was 17:29:38. Among the local competitors attending, Michele Quinn, Brian Ciarlei and Brad Fish earned trophies. The site is unbelievable – two 60-second courses running simultaneously and paddock space for 1200 people. There was an additional 40-second practice course set up and in use. The auto related museum in Lincoln is also worth the trip. The fastest rental car at the October 4 Solo was driven by a Cal Club member who needed to vacate his hotel room in Rhode Island due to a football game. Included in the Street Survival School was a family of four with the sons and mother entered. Andy Smith, age 21 months, helped stand up or lay down cones during course setup. At this early age, the position of the cone was not completely understood. After the meeting, Bob Henderson reviewed the Fun One and recognized those that were instrumental in making it a successful event. “The Fun One is a monument to the Finger Lakes Region and shows what a region of our size can do to make the Fun One a premier event. It is believed that the Fun One is the longest running regional event in the country. The June Sprints National at Elkhart Lake has been running longer.” The key people that made the 45th 6
annual Fun One a success were presented symbols of appreciation. Those present included: Bill Bell, Announcer; Dean Croucher, Steward; Meridith Croucher, Steward; Gene Dinkel, Advisor and Black Flag Steward; Carl Dresie, Timing & Scoring; Ann Gilson, Trophy Queen and coordinator; Barb Lissow, Flagging & Communications; Bob Swinehart, Program; Elizabeth Thiel, Hospitality and Finance; Marsh Toombs, Registrar; Mike Toombs, Assistant Registrar plus; John Walsh, Co-Chair. Honorable mention was given to: Jim Craven, Sound; Syl Barlow, Past race chair and trailer coordinator; Brian Barlow, Program Advertising; Mike Brunner, T&S and Photography; Judy Dennis, Registration; Lew Giesy, Grid Steward and B&E specialist; Wilma Giesy, Registration; Al Isselhard, Program; George Morris, Race Advisor and Steward of the Meet; Jean Morris, Registration efforts; Bruce Perry, Tech and competitor: Lynn Randall, T&S Annex. John Morris, Dan Thiel and Kurt Thiel for help with the lighting at the Saturday evening party. Bob is proud to be chairman of such a top-notch event. All contribute to making this event what it is. Jim Craven led all in a "HURRAH!" for Bob Henderson. It was noted that some did not realize initially that the short course was used on Sunday.
Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes September 29, 2009
Location: 753 Klem Rd., Webster, NY 14580 The meeting was called to order at 7:41 p.m. Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; Scott Moller, Asst. Regional Executive;
Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Brad Johnson, Activities Director; Jim Craven, John Morris and John Walsh, Directors. Also present: Meridith Croucher, STPR Chair. Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order. The July 28 board of directors meeting minutes were approved on a motion by John Walsh, seconded by John Morris. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel The income and expense by class statement for January 1 through September 29 was distributed for information and comment. Money has been moved to the investment accounts. More will be moved after all of the Fun One bills are paid. All other bills received have been paid. Not all of the numbers from the Fun One are in. Refund checks have been written. The track rental bill of $28,000 has been paid. They did not charge any overtime. The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by Jim Craven, seconded by John Walsh. Rally/RallyCross Report Results/report are not available for the RallyCross on the schedule for September 26. The next RallyCross is scheduled for October 17. A social rally with Rick Barnes as rallymaster is scheduled for October 11. The Genesee and Wyoming Railroad will be providing door prizes. The Winter Rally Series will start the second weekend in January and run every other weekend for five events. Rallymasters are set for three of the events. (Note: The schedule will be changed due to conflicts. Ed.) Solo Report – Mike Toombs The September 13 Solo event at Xerox in Webster had 73 entrants recording times, with eight runs available. The course made good use of the available space due to a well thought out design. The Street Survival School and last
November 2009
Solo event of our series are scheduled for the first weekend in October. The Solo picnic is scheduled for November 15. Details will be printed in the November issue of TOP END. Race Report Fun One A total of 281 different car and driver combinations were on track on at least one of the days. A breakdown of the cars on track is available from Carl Dresie. Race results are available on the Finger Lakes Region, NESCCA and MyLaps websites. The Saturday qualifying session results for Groups 1 and 2 are not available. Jean Morris broke her shoulder in Registration on Friday as the result of a fall. Get well soon Jean! WGI required that everyone entering the track during the weekend sign a waiver at the gate. This is a waiver for the track, in addition to the SCCA waiver. With one worker at the gate, this caused a traffic backup entering the track. A software problem occurred during the first two qualifying sessions on Saturday. An upload problem resulted in the Saturday results being placed on MyLaps several days late. The preliminary results from the survey prepared by Scott Moller were discussed. A more detailed analysis of the results will be presented at the October general membership meeting.
October meeting. Meridith Croucher gave a wrap-up report on STPR. The DIRT 2 game uses Ken Block’s car with STPR logos on the box and in the game. Great exposure. A managers' meeting is scheduled for November. Startup money for the 2010 event will be retained. The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 p.m. on a motion by Scott Moller, seconded by Jim Craven. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary

Four Drivers Claim SCCA Solo Triad Award 09/21/2009
TOPEKA, Kan. (Sept. 21, 2009) – Four drivers, Michelle Seelig, of Edmond, Okla., Mark Madarash, of Red Oak, Texas, Clemens Burger, of Noblesville, Ind., and Jeff Cashmore, of New Berlin, Wis., have been named the inaugural winners of the SCCA Solo Triad Award. Introduced earlier this year, the SCCA Solo Triad Award incorporates all levels of the SCCA Solo National program and is the most difficult accomplishment a Soloist can earn in a single season. To win the Solo Triad Award, one must win the Eastern or Western States Championship, a Divisional Championship and a National Championship, all in the same class. Seelig claimed her prize by winning the Eastern States Championship, the Midwest Divisional Championship and a National Championship in Street Touring® S Ladies. Madarash won the Eastern States Championship, Southwest Divisional Championship and a National Championship in E Street Prepared. Cashmore was also an Eastern States Champion and claimed the Midwest Division Championship and National Championship in D Modified. Burger won B Modified at the Eastern States Championship and was the Great Lakes Division and National Champion in BM. All three drivers will receive a personal Solo Triad Trophy and commemorative vest, plus their names engraved on a perpetual Solo Triad Trophy. Each also received a free entry into the 2010 Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships and will be entered in a drawing to win a lifetime SCCA
The Weekend Membership Program continues to be a positive program despite some administrative issues. To d a t e w e h a v e p r o c e s s e d a p p r o x i m a t e l y 11 , 0 0 0 We e k e n d Memberships in 2009. We have made some changes on the administrative side that should result in fewer errors when invoicing Regions for the memberships submitted. Some of the recent changes we have implemented: - We have an outside company performing Weekend Membership data entry, thus reducing the time it takes to process the forms. - Created a log that summarizes the Weekend Membership received from each event. The log includes total number of forms received as well as the number of competitors vs. free memberships (passengers, etc.) - The information received from data entry is compared to the log prior to invoicing to account for any clerical errors. There are ways Regions can help to further reduce the errors: - Utilize the Weekend Membership Transmittal Form as requested in the program guidelines. Currently only a little more than half of the forms submitted are attached to a transmittal that helps clarify event information. The transmittal form can be found under "Forms" when you login to your SCCA account. - Ensure that the "Event Information" area on the Weekend Membership is complete and correct. We have found instances where the Region data has been filled in with the Region in which the member would belong instead of the Region that is conducting the event. This has caused Regions to be billed incorrectly. The input from Regions has been invaluable in improving this program and Member Services appreciates the continued support. If you have any questions regarding the program or invoices, please contact Michelle Lour.

Rally Tom and Deb Langdon Road Rally Chairs
Genesee & Wyoming RallyRoad By Rick Barnes, Rallymaster Rally competitors enjoyed a casual 60-mile road rally traversing the countryside in the area around Letchworth State Park, taking advantage of the scenic and vibrant foliage in its dynamic seasonal change of colors. On October 11, 2009, the Genesee & Wyoming RallyRoad departed the Yard of Ale in Piffard at 1:30 p.m., returning two hours later. The second event in the NY Short Line RallyRoad Series, it was formatted as a social photo rally; the total competitive distance was just 60 miles. Originally, the route was planned to actually pass through Letchworth State Park from north to south. However, due to a large craft fair that weekend, the route was changed to run from Mt. Morris to Portageville on the east side of the gorge. From there, it went through Castile, Silver Springs, Warsaw and Wyoming before heading back to Piffard. The event was a great success, as the combination of crisp, clear fall weather, bright leaves, and entertaining back roads drew 20 teams. That may be the most we’ve seen in a social rally locally in some time. A large number of the entrants drove in from Buffalo, and an equally large number of people drove Minis, thanks to Tom Langdon’s promotion of the event. As such, there were many new faces among the competitors. Teams were provided route instructions in tulip format. As an added fun assignment, teams were given 24 photographs, and had to locate and identify their location as they drove the route. Scoring was based on how many competitors correctly figured out the mileage to where each photo was taken to within a 1/10th of a mile. Some of the photos were obvious, while others were more challenging. My favorite, of course, was the picture of a railroad crossing in my rearview mirror. It must not have been as tough to find as I would’ve thought, though, because most teams got it right. With 20 cars, there was a range of scores at the end, including several positional ties and one team with a perfect score. The Smith family, in car #1, also finished first by getting every picture mileage correct. There was some discussion as to whether or not their dual co-driver strategy is what clinched the win for them. Was Andy at 21 months age an asset or could it be that they’re just good at this stuff. Either way, everybody had fun, enjoyed the roads, the leaves, the weather, and also enjoyed the challenge of finding the photo locations. A number of people even expressed interest in coming back for subsequent rallies. So, on that note, look for NY Short Line RallyRoad Series #3, possibly in the spring of 2010.

Anyway, no rally organizer can do it all alone, so special thanks to Tom & Deb Langdon for pre-checking the route and helping at registration, to Alan Smith for coaching the novices, and of course to the Yard of Ale for once again putting up with our lot.

November 2009
Rally Meeting Notes October 13, 2009 96 Church Street, Victor, NY Nine Road Rally enthusiasts were present. The following is arranged by topic and may not be in chronological order. The October Genesee & Wyoming RallyRoad event was a success with 20 teams entered. Results and an article will be printed in the November issue of TOP END. The Winter Series training rally was scheduled in conflict with the Solo picnic and will be rescheduled. Current date will be Sunday December 6. The rally format will be an abbreviated winter rally style. Tom Langdon, with help from other members of the group, will be Rallymaster. The first loop of the rally will include sample calculations, etc., while the second loop will then give the “students” the opportunity to apply those lessons. The year-end Rally party will be on Saturday December 12. Alan Smith will check on Cheap Charlies for these events. More information will be available on the web site and in the December issue of TOP END.
The proposed schedule for the Winter Series is: January 2, Alan Smith as Rallymaster; January 23, Rallymaster TBA; February 6, out of region Ohio Winter Rally; February 20, Tom Langdon as Rallymaster; March 6, Rallymaster Curtis Braun with Ben Gilmore. Jerry Kerwin will contact Greg Lester regarding the Ohio Winter Rally. The “Ithaca” rally cancelled last year may be updated and used for the January 23 rally. Several candidates were identified to be Rallymaster for the other event. Suggestions for the Winter Rally Series trophies are being solicited. Options are glass, plaques, tags, etc. Marnie Soom reported that Crown Awards is a possible source. Jason Kostyshak can create oak wall plaques. The light rules for the Winter Series will be the same as before. The factors for B and C speeds may need adjustment. Raw data from previous events needs to be analyzed. Any changes need to be defined by the November rally meeting. Additional RoadRally Safety Stewards need to be trained and licensed. RallyRoad events are being considered for early May and October of 2010.
It was noted that a broken axle on a Subaru Legacy reacts similar to a bad clutch.
September 26 RallyCross: record
attendance and a great course to boot! By Jason Light The September RallyCross event was the largest in recent years with 24 entrants. Big thanks go to Jim Perrin who was event chairman and to all the volunteers who stepped up to get the event going smoothly. The course conditions were optimal with smooth grassy conditions turning to light dust by the end of the event. We were able to fit in ten laps for everyone before the deluge of rain hit. Many positive comments were made about the condition of the field and the course design. That design made for a technical run with a few quick spots to "stretch the cars' legs," so to speak. The next event is scheduled for Saturday October 17th—we hope to set a new attendance record.

Didja’ Ever Wonder? In those moments between consciousness and sleep, ideas can skip through your mind. At the time they man seem to be an elegant solution to a problem, but the rarely pass the test of scrutiny. Or do they? – Didja’ Ever? An early McClaren Indy car featured a rear suspension design that linked the outer upper a-arm to the inner upper aarm mounting point. This caused a shift toward positive camber in the inner rear wheel whenever the outer suspension was compressed. Claimed to be good for developing left turn cornering power. The concept can be applied to both sides resulting in a desired camber change under roll. Didja’ ever wonder how difficult it would be to tune that suspension? Or the problems that would need to be solved in applying the concept to the front suspension? Didja’ ever wonder why push rods are used, especially in the front suspension of closed wheel cars? A pull rod would allow the springs to be mounted horizontally and oriented front to back. That would lower the center of gravity. Beyond that, the angles of the “bell crank” used to change the direction of the suspension loading could use something other than 90-degree connection angles while at rest. Changing the angles could give a rising rate suspension with a smooth transition from soft to stiff. Didja’ ever wonder why the crank rods on roll bars are parallel to the ground? If the angle was adjusted such that they were parallel under full compression and significantly angled downward for the inside wheel during cornering induced roll the result would be a tendency to pull the car downward. Didja’ ever wonder why the belly pans on flat bottom cars are parallel to the ground? Boundary layer generation would suggest that the front edge be the lowest point and that the bottom would slope up slightly after the front edge, flattening out near the back edge. The average velocity of the air under the car would set the distance. No down force would be created, but drag would be lessened.
