One of the clearer moments Sunday morning at Watkins Glen during Fun One ‘10. This is not the fog that blurs a driver’s vision during a race, but the one that clouds his vision going onto the track. 3
REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive
Last month I started out talking about the election of officers at the October meeting. All I can say now is that it was sort of done at the meeting. As many of you are aware, the ballots where either very late or they weren’t delivered at all, I’m still waiting for mine. So after some investigation, it was determined that the US Postal Service had some issues with some machinery and a good number of ballots got chewed up. So we took a voice vote and all offices that were uncontested were declared closed and that the three contested positions would be voted on next month. FedEx is picking up the cost of mailing the ballots again and you should get them in plenty of time to vote before the November meeting. Right after the November meeting we are putting on the North East Division mini-convention. There are plenty of activities going on that weekend. There is a meeting with the three SCCA directors in the division. There are
4
plenty of seminars from Solo Safety Steward to race Timing and Scoring. So this is an opportunity for you to see what happens on the division level without having to drive very far. The solo program completed another successful season and is having the picnic/awards ceremony on November 7. The Fun One is history for 2010. Elizabeth Thiel and John Walsh and their crew put on a great race once again. The large number of cars for the races made for some problems and some good racing. There were a lot of problems with car carnage on Saturday and the fog on Sunday morning delayed the start of things. We were able to get finished on time Sunday after the decision was made to start race groups two through eight based on the race finish on Saturday. What can I say about the pig roast, it was great, and continues to be a big crowd pleaser. The workers enjoyed getting lunch in the media center both days once again. This year has gone by as quickly as any of the years before it. We put on eight Solo events plus the Finger Lakes National Tour. We put on two Club Races, the very successful Fun One and the enjoyable Westward Ho! We put on six winter RoadRallys and the Charity Rally in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, a couple of fun rallies and five RallyCross events. We had one member who traveled to Road America to compete in the Runoffs® and 17 people who drove to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete in the Solo Nationals - sounds to me like we had a good year once again. Now we need to start planning for next year. We are putting on two races at Watkins Glen, the Glen Double National and the Fun One in the fall. I know all of the other programs are going to be conducting rallies, and solo events. So what are you doing? So, until next month… Mike

Election of Officers Due to problems at the post office, the ballots for the election of the 2011 board of directors were not mailed in time for the voting to be completed by the time of the October general membership meeting. The candidates for the uncontested positions were elected by voice vote on a motion by Mike Brunner, seconded by Alan Smith. The following 2011 board members are: Mike Toombs, Regional Executive; J. Scott Moller, Assistant Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer and Carl Dresie, Secretary. Replacement ballots will be sent out with a return-mail date of Oct. 25. November 2010
The schedule is being set. Race Report Fun One ’10 – John Walsh/Elizabeth Thiel The race currently shows a positive cash flow of about $20,000 Several entrants who had entered both days but were unable to compete on Sunday were given refunds. That refund changed their cost from that of a two-day entry to a one-day entry. Saturday was plagued with flipped cars, burning cars, etc. resulting in a long day. . Fog on Sunday morning caused the qualifying session to be canceled, causing the competitor's starting position for Sunday's races to be set by the finishing positions from Saturday's races. An early easing up of the fog let Group One run their qualifying session. There were 31 entrants who ran in more than one race group. One driver competed in four classes.
Those running are: Activities Director, Brian Barlow and Barb Lissow; Directors (two to be elected), Syl Barlow, Mark Eksten, Fran McAllister and Charles Tanck. Membership Report Thirty-one members were present for the Solo and General Membership meetings. Membership was up 21 from last month to 485 on October 4. Seventeen of the new members are from the Street Survival School. Mike reminds all to log on to their membership page on the national website (www.scca.com) and to verify that the information is correct. Also, any race days worked will reduce the cost of your yearly membership fee. Information will be in the November issue of Top End. Active military duty members receive a $30 discount on their membership dues. The membership report was accepted on a motion by Scott Moller, seconded by Barb Lissow. Mini-Con – Elizabeth Thiel The Mini-Con website is up at http://www.flr-scca. com/10minicon.html. The registration form can be printed out and mailed to the Mini-Con registrar, Marsha Toombs. Flyers and forms are also available from Elizabeth. Costs are: Full registration - $100, Dinner only - $45, Lunch only - $35, Seminars and Breaks only - $25, Competition Clinic – TBA.
2010 November
Mike Toombs extended thanks to those who worked the event and especially Elizabeth and John for their efforts. Race Registration A recommendation for the online race registration is expected from Topeka in December. Presentations by the online registration providers will be made at the Mini-Con. Westward Ho This event has lost money over the years. A change in date or cancellation are options being considered. Rally Report Upcoming events include a social RoadRally on Sunday, Oct. 17 and a RallyCross on Saturday, Oct. 24. A proposal for a winter rally series, similar to the MONY series of a number of years ago, is being discussed. (The Michigan/Ohio/New York rally series was a precursor to Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally. Ed.) Dates are being set for the Finger Lakes Region’s Winter Rally Series. Regional Executive Report – Mike Toombs Thanks to John Walsh for leading the September general membership meeting. Solo Report – Brian Buchman The Sept. 26 event at Rochester Institute of Technology had 96 competitors. The last event of the season is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 10 at R.I.T.
5
The Solo Picnic is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 7 at the Scottsville Fire Hall (Scottsville, N.Y.). A flyer for the picnic will be in the November issue of Top End. Mike Toombs noted that 17 Finger Lakes Region members attended The Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Championships at Lincoln Airpark in Lincoln, Neb.. A total of 1,168 competitors attended the championships. A first time Finger Lakes Region competitor, Jason Offord, placed eighth in G Stock, receiving a trophy for his efforts. Top End The last issue of Top End, which all should have received, was done through FedEx Office. This change in provider comes at a significant reduction in cost. With the lower cost we can accept, in fact we are asking for, more content from the membership. Suggestions for changes to Top End are welcome. Pass them along to Carl Dresie. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel Elizabeth reported on the amount in the checking account. Financial details are available from Elizabeth.

with up to 5 ½ inches of rain on Friday.
A card was passed around for signatures expressing our sympathy to Debbi Segall on the passing of her parents.
The Glen Region is planning a Solo to run at WGI on Sunday during the "Last Chance" race weekend.
The Colegroves were well placed in F Modified at the Solo Nationals in the rain, before the track was "oiled down." After the clean up, the rain let up and the remaining competitors were able to run faster. It was noted that when competitors are called to make a run, they are expected to do so. The only exception being a 10-minute mechanical delay if the competitor needs to work on the car. Our Solo Vee competitor was made aware of this rule. The Monday evening reception at the Solo Nationals was held at the Museum of American Speed. If you can arrange to tour the museum, do so. Some of those who attended noted that four to five hours would not do justice to all of the displays. The museum is a fantastic eclectic collection mostly related to various forms of racing. Rain at Lime Rock Park made the previous weekend's races interesting,
The fall Nelson Ledges events have been cancelled for financial reasons. The sanctioning of double (and even quad events) on a single weekend may be a factor in lower attendance for these events.
Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes September 28, 2010 Location: 753 Klem Rd., Webster, NY Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:37 p.m. Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; John Walsh, Assistant Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Barbara Lissow, Activities Director; Dave Ciufo, Scott Moller and John Morris, Directors.
All bills have been paid except for the NYSRRC fees from the Fun One. Several refunds for withdrawals from the Fun One need to be sent out. The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by Mike Brunner, seconded by John Walsh. The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m. on a motion by Scott Moller, seconded by Bob Swinehart. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary Bench Racing Mike Toombs commented, “I just love this thing.” (The mallet.) Using “the Hammer” to call the meeting to order 6
November 2010
Guest present: Lew Giesy, Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally® Manager Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order. The minutes of the Aug. 31, 2010, board of directors meeting were approved on a motion by Scott Moller seconded by John Walsh. Activities Report – Barb Lissow The Year-End Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at the Burgundy Basin Inn. The menu and other details need to be set. Board Meeting Location Family obligations may require that the meeting location for next years' board meetings be moved. Mini-Con Traditionally the spring NEDiv meeting has been devoted to training and the fall meeting, the MiniCon, devoted to other issues. The Finger Lakes Region-hosted event scheduled for Nov. 12-14 will include a competition car clinic. These sessions are relevant to Club Racing, Solo and Rally competition car preparation. John Walsh is continuing to arrange the program for these sessions. Elizabeth Thiel is looking for sponsorship of the breaks. A budget is being prepared. Race Report Westward Ho Financial activity for Westward Ho is complete except for entry charges. The status of Westward Ho for next year will be reviewed. Possibilities include discontinuing the event and rescheduling to a fall date; the latter depends upon the status of the traditional Mahoning Valley and Western New York events. Fun One – John Walsh and Elizabeth Thiel According to John, "A lot of things during the weekend went really well, but when Mrs. Murphy showed up
2010 November
things got interesting." A number of incidents on Saturday caused the end of the racing to be pushed back two hours. Sunday qualifying for all but the first group was cancelled due to fog. Starting positions for the other groups were based on Saturday race results. Full weekend entries that did not run on Sunday were given a refund of $125. The number of volunteer workers for the weekend was estimated to be 150. The high number of entries created a crowded event. The event schedule needs to be studied and the inclusion of the Historic Race Group considered. Options for the event were discussed and will be discussed further. The transfer of information from the competitor application through Registration to Timing & Scoring is being studied. Several problem areas have been identified. The use of an Orbits remote terminal in the garage helped update competitor information. The use of the NESSCA online registration site also needs study. Rally Report Lew Giesy reviewed the STPR status. The annual STPR managers’ meeting was held recently. The event had a financial deficit of about $3000 due to a low number of entries. The addition of a regional performance rally is being investigated. The event would be held this winter at the Waste Management site. Rick Barnes is rallymaster for a social rally running out of Tom Wahl’s in Avon on Sunday, Oct. 17. Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes had a DNF at Targa Newfoundland, a reported straight at T. We are waiting for a review of the experiences of the 1971 Dodge Demon, “Smurf”. Solo Report The Sept. 26 Solo event at Rochester Institute of Technology had 96 drivers.
The last Solo in the Finger Lakes Region’s 2010 Solo series is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 10 at RIT. Mike commented on The Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Championships at the Lincoln Airpark, Lincoln, Nebraska. The 17 Finger Lakes Region members entered are listed in the October issue of Top End. This was the second year at this site and the event went much smoother. There were 1,168 entries. A problem with finding a place to serve 1,500 people still exists. The Monday-night welcome party was held at the Museum of American Speed, a fantastic museum featuring racecars to lunch boxes. (More information can be found at http://www. museumofamericanspeed.com/. Ed.) A meeting with the Seneca Industrial Development Authority to discuss the use of the Seneca Army Depot is tentatively scheduled for October. Other sites for Solo events are being investigated. Top End and Secretary Report – Carl Dresie The changes in Top End that have been made with the change in printers were reviewed. Other changes are planned. Suggestions are welcome. The ballots have been given to the printers and were delivered to the post office on Monday. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel All general expense bills that have been submitted are paid. Top End printing was paid directly to FedEx Office rather than going through Topeka. Fun One ’10 financials are still being finalized. Worker fund donations by the entrants totaled $2,000. Those donations were distributed to the SCCA workers using a list based on the worker sign-in list. Taxes have been filed. The Canandaigua Bank financial contacts will be at the October board meeting on Oct. 26. They will review the investment portfolio. 7
The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by John Walsh, seconded by John Morris. The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 p.m. on a motion by John Walsh, seconded by Dave Ciufo. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary

Material for TOP END is due on the 12th of the month. This date reflects the needed for printing, mailing and receipt in a timely manner. Add three or four days for compiling all of the material and we arrive at nineteen days. With the change in printing and mailing to FedEx Office, the time between completing the issue and delivery may become less. Due dates may be adjusted, watch page 3. The inside pages of TOP END are printed in black and white, but the version sent to MaryAnne for the website retains color in the photographs, etc. Other differences include removing address information for the membership news and the addition of ”filler” for that space. Be sure to check out the website version. - Ed.
Doug Seim Formula FST Champion Doug Seim wins the Hoosier Racing Tire Formula FST Championship The Championship of Formula First has been decided for 2010 and the winner of this 10 race series is Doug Seim of Okeana Ohio. Doug is a former long time member of the Finger Lakes Region. Seim won six out of the ten races and he led every race he started
with one exception. The Hoosier Tire Championship is intended to be a model for the growth of Formula First and this year the series was contended by 22 different drivers on five racetracks in the Midwest and Northeast. All the Formula First cars use a hard compound spec Hoosier Tire and all are powered by VW 1600 air-cooled motors with about 85 HP. Doug’s Championship included a win at Blackhawk Farms, two wins at Nelson Ledges, a win at Road America, a very strange win at Grattan Raceway where he started last, lost both of his front shocks ¾ of the way through the race and still won. The season culminated with a win at Mid Ohio where he lowered his own lap record. Doug drives his Mysterian M5.1 for RGU Racing and has engines built by Autowerks of Dunellen, NJ. RGU Racing is owned by Finger Lakes Region member Robert Guhde. Finger Lakes Region members Ron Fish and Scott Grinell played important roles in getting this car on the track. The Formula First group now migrates to Atlanta and the ARRC for its last bonus race of the season. While the year’s championship is settled, this race is taken very seriously by all involved and promises to be action packed and totally competitive - a hallmark of Formula First.

November 2010
Rally Tom Langdon Interim RoadRally Chair
Rally Meeting Notes October 12, 2010 96 Church Street, Victor, NY Seven RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present. Discussions are grouped by subject.
Winter Rally Series A tentative schedule for the Finger Lakes Region’s Winter Rally Series is as follows: 1. Long Way Home, Alan Smith, Jan. 15 2. Ithaca Winter Rally, Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber, Jan. 22 or Jan. 8. 3. Feb. 5 4. Feb. 19 5. Mar. 5 Several candidates have been identified for events 3 through 5, but no firm commitments have been made. The Long Way Home will be the second event in the proposed WINTR (Winter INTernational Rally) Series. We have been asked to add hometown, etc. to the scoring spreadsheet. Including that information in the results would help in defining the demographics of our competitors. Entry fees will be held the same unless analysis of financial data from the 2010 season shows a need for adjustment. A budget needs to be prepared.
WINTR Rally Series A WINTR rally series is being promoted. The series would consist of various rallies from Michigan to Vermont into Ontario, Canada. The organizers of the series are Greg Lester, Frank Beyer and Steve McKelvie. Alan Smith received an e-mail from Steve asking that his January rally, “The Long Way Home” be part of that series. The events currently scheduled are:
2010 November
1. 2. 3.
Son of Sno*Drift, Jan. 8 Long Way Home, Jan. 15 An event conducted by SMCC of Montreal, Jan. 22 4. Ohio Winter Rally, Feb. 5 5. Vermont Winter Rally, Feb. 19 6. Maple Leaf Winter Rally, Feb. 12, 19 or 26. The goal of the organizers is to have competitors be able to run at least two or three of the events in the WINTR Series. General instructions for the series are to be those of the individual region/events. A $5 surcharge per entrant would be assessed to cover the cost of prize monies. More information is available through Alan Smith.
Rally America National Championship Rally Car® has announced the dates for the six event 2011 Rally America National Championship. The events and dates are: 1. Sno*Drift, Jan. 28/29 2. 100 Acre Wood, Feb. 25/26 3. Olympus Rally, April 30/May1 4. Oregon Trail Rally, May 13/15 5. Susquehannock Trail, June 3/4 6. New England Forest Rally, July 15/16
R e g i o n a l Pe r f o r m a n c e Rally
The STPR® managers are working on a regional performance rally for February using the Waste Management and adjacent forest site. Possible dates are Feb. 12 or Feb. 26. This would be a one- day coefficient 2 performance rally.
NEDiv Mini-Con Ted Goddard and Scott Beliveau have not committed to attending the Mini-Con. Kathy Barnes will be conducting a Solo Safety Steward training session. That training could apply toward a RallyCross Safety Steward license.
Miscellaneous Discussions Alan Smith will arrange the Finger Lakes Region’s Rally and Awards Party to be held in December. The December rally meeting will be held as discussion and planning will be needed for the Winter Rally Series. A donation to the White Deer Association at the Seneca Army Depot might result in more support to the Solo program. An article on a Solo event suggests that the operation at Solo and RallyCross events would help the uninitiated. Adjustment to the front-end alignment of the “Angry Smurf” of the team of Hopkins and Hughes during Targa Newfoundland started with a fork lift and continued with a chain and piling on a pier. Continued straightening resulted in a tear of the unibody and subsequent withdrawal from the event. The comment was made that Stock class is for the older competitors, using steampowered calculators. After a long-term marriage, some people are noted to grow close enough to being the same to the point they purchase identical anniversary cards. Ben Gilmore has the field mowed, but needs to start removing rocks, especially the “mother” rock. That removal should reduce the rate at which rocks appear in the field. Piecing together sections of different roads, not the road you are on, can lead to interesting TSD Rally experiences. A “Top Gear” marathon on BBCAM was reviewed. A WRC rally driver appeared to have fun with a Reliant Robin. The jokes are getting older.
Spring, Summer and Fall Rallies Tom Langdon is checking event #4 of the New York Shortline RallyRoad Series, “Avon, Geneseo and Mt. Morris RallyRoad,” scheduled for October 17. A volunteer for rallymaster of the charity rally during the STPR weekend has come forward.
Santa and one of his trusty elves are expected at the Rally Awards Party. 21
