REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive We find ourselves having our annual meeting in November this year. The nominating committee had problems putting together a slate of candidates. I’ve tried everything in an effort to get people involved in the region and yet once again we have trouble getting a group of people to run for office. I have no concerns that the group that is running for office is involved and interested in the advancement of the club; I just wish that it was easier for us to find more people. As I enter the eighth year of my being the regional executive, I wonder when someone will come forward and show an interest in running the region. Maybe next year… The Solo program finished up a tumultuous season on Sunday Sept. 30. The last event was a late add on and for those who missed it; you missed a lot of fun. The turnout was a low, just over 30 drivers and we all had a good time. The event was run much like a two-day event with the morning runs going in one direction and the afternoon going in the other direction. Then the best run from the morning and afternoon were added together to determine the winners. Unfortunately I didn’t win my class, but my car (which ran on drying pavement that Brian and I didn’t have) had fastest time of the day for the combined runs. Then to complete the day, we had a challenge series with the 16 fastest drivers running in brackets against each other and the 16 slower drivers. Well lo and behold I was the fastest driver among the slower drivers. Who said you can’t win and lose in the same day? 4
The SCCA Club Racing program at Watkins Glen International ended the year with the Glen Region’s Last Chance weekend. They once again put together a multiple sanctioned event with enough racing to make everyone happy. They also ran an autocross again on Sunday using the paddock. Try as I might I couldn’t get any heat into the tires and the car spent most of the day sliding around the corners. Now if the track had done a better job of paving the paddock! I’ve never seen so many elevation changes in such a small area, so when I wasn’t sliding around corners I was bouncing. The National Office has been promoting the Majors Program. They have requested that we make our National race next year part of that program. I have talked to Club Racing and discussed our options. Now this isn’t a simple thing, there are some requirements that make it tough for us, but there are also some advantages that make it right for us. I need to do some more talking to people before we can make a decision on what to do. I’ll let you know as soon as a decision has been made. Don’t forget the RallyCross season is in full swing. Then we have the upcoming Rally to the Glen H Curtiss
Museum on Nov 3. This rally includes entry to the museum, Marsha and I have been there before and it is quite the place. For years the region had these types of destination rallies and we are trying again. We are hoping that this might attract more people and become a yearly thing. Are you going to be there? Well, Carl asked me to get this done so he could put Top End together so I had better finish it. I would love to see all of you at the Annual Meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Until next month, Mike
Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes October 2, 2012 Location: Murph’s Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit, NY 14617 Assistant Regional Executive Dave Ciufo called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The following is arranged by topic and may not be in chronological order. The August general membership meeting minutes as printed in the September issue of Top End were approved on a motion by Mike Brunner, seconded by Chris Bucknam.
PROVIDING THE RACING COMMUNITY WITH INSURANCE AND DISABILITY INCOME FOR OVER 40 YEARS.
Activities – The 2012 NEDiv Mini-Con will be held Nov. 9 – 11 at the Ramada Inn in Ithaca, NY, hosted by the Glen Region. Information is available at www.nediv. com and from Sandy Sanders at (607) 423-4137. The Finger Lakes Region Year-End banquet is scheduled for Saturday Jan. 12 at the Green Lantern Inn in Fairport. The Rochester Automobile Dealers
November 2012
Association show is scheduled for Feb. 28 through March 3. Think about showing your competition car and let Barb Lissow know that it will be available. Membership Report – Mike Brunner The region currently has 432 members, a decrease of six from the September count. Eighteen members and guests attended the Solo and general membership meetings. New Business Elections will be held at the Nov. general membership meeting. Ballots will be sent out via “Click-to-Mail” the week of Oct. 22. They will include a choice of day of the week for the general membership meetings. Race Report We will be purchasing two TranX Pro decoders from IndyCar. They will be tested initially as a second or backup system at an upcoming race. Fun One 2012 Entries were right at the 250 budget number. Damage and oil dry costs were higher than expected. As a result, financially the event was just below breakeven. The power outage Friday evening, caused by a lightning strike, had an effect on registering competitors. It also delayed entering competitor information into the timing & scoring software. The results book is available, contact Carl Dresie, (585) 544-6482. A debriefing meeting will be scheduled by Fran McAllister to review the weekend. Rally Report The October rally meeting has been moved back a week to October 16. Rick Barnes will be out of town on the original date. Rally Cross The Sept. 29 RallyCross had 22 competitors making up to ten runs. (Results are printed in the November issue of Top End. Ed.)
2012 November
The remaining 2012 events are Oct. 27 (a night time RallyCross), Nov. 17 and Dec. 15. The last Saturdays in Jan. and Feb. 2013 have been requested for the start of the 2013 season. Social Road Rallies Rick Barnes has written a rally to be run on Oct. 14. A flyer is printed in Top End. The rally to the Glenn H Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport is scheduled for November 3. Lynn Randall is rallymaster for this 60 competitive mile social rally. A flier will be printed in Top End. Winter Series A “Dust Off The Cobwebs” event is scheduled for Dec. 1. This is a paved and smooth unpaved rally designed to bring the competitors back up to speed on navigating skills and to give new rallyists a chance to learn the skills needed to navigate a tulip style rally. Some of the more experienced competitors may also use this opportunity to try new procedures. The first event of the Finger Lakes Region’s Winter Rally Series scheduled for Jan. 5 will have Alan Smith as rallymaster. The Jan. 19 rally will have Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber as rallymasters. That event will run out of Ithaca. Solo Report An event was run Sunday, Sept. 30 at Delphi, with 32 competitors entered. The course was well designed for the small area available. Five runs were done in the morning, and then the course was reversed for another five runs in the afternoon. (Results are printed in the November issue of Top End. Ed.) A set of challenge runs were made after the regular runs. They were run “head-to-head” with times based on the best time of the competitor. The Solo picnic needs to be scheduled.
Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel Elizabeth reported the checking account balance. The amount reflects payment of entries for the Fun One ‘12. Both race and Solo did not break even for 2012. All Fun One bills are paid. Guard rail charges will be submitted for insurance reimbursement. Audit reports are needed for the last few Solo events have been submitted and we will not be charged any late penalties. A refund for overpayment of the cleaning charges for the Driver’s Social picnic has been deposited. A check has been written to pay for two MyLaps decoders purchased from IndyCar. Financial statements are available for review from Elizabeth. The meeting was adjourned at 8:33 p. m. on a motion by Alan Smith, seconded by John Walsh. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary
Program –
John Gorsline was introduced by Andy Villa, who has joined John in providing insurance services to the racing community.
John’s first experience with racing was as a young child accompanying his father in a black with red interior Jaguar XK 120. After leaving the Marines, he started providing insurance to race car drivers through the Gorsline Company, Protection Strategies for High Risk Professionals. Starting with questions covering road racing events and people the program continued with a slide show of places and people. That was followed by racing anecdotes and descriptions of the race track services that the Gorsline Company provides. Thanks to John and Andy for a very interesting evening.

2012 SCCA Runoffs Finger Lakes Region drivers compete at the 2012 SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Road America. Stephen Wheeler placed seventh in STL. Michael Hausknecht did not finish in Spec Racer Ford after qualifying 19th in a field of 40 cars. ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (September 23, 2012) – Ray Huffmaster, of Clarkston, Mich., won the Super Touring Lite® class debut at the 49th SCCA National Championship Runoffs® after a final-lap pass on Jim Drago, of Memphis, Tenn. Rich Walke, of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., made a last-lap pass of his own to finish third. While the STL class was running as a supplemental class this year at Road America and not for a National Championship, the action was no less intense. Huffmaster’s No. 31 Huffmaster Security/Hoosier Mazda RX-8 and Drago’s No. 2 East Street Racing Mazda Miata swapped the lead officially eight times, and many more times at the back of the circuit before crossing the timing stripe. 1, (1), Ray Huffmaster, Clarkston, MI, Mazda RX-8, 13. 2, (2), Jim Drago, Memphis, TN, Mazda Miata, 13. 3, (4), Rich Walke, Hawthorn Woods, IL, Mazda RX-7, 12. 4, (3), Bob Beede, Greenwich, CT, Honda Civic Si, 12. 5, (5), Greg Amy, Middletown, CT, Acura Integra, 12. 6, (6), David Palfenier, Naperville, IL, Mazda MX5, 12. 7, (7), Stephen Wheeler, Geneva, NY, Acura Integra, 12. 8, (10), Mike Smith, Elk Grove Village, IL, Honda Civic Si, 12. Todd Harris, of Portland, Ore., finished second, and Schofield was third. Driving the No. 58 Cottage Senior Living Spec Racer Ford, White’s car appeared to be hooked up early and often. He could choose just about any racing line he wanted and make it stick. White spent most of the race battling Harris, Schofield, and Scott Rettich, of Camden, Ohio, for the top spot. With the exception of White, each of these drivers led the race at one point. In fact, the only part White led was the final straight to the finish line, with a little help from Harris. The final margin of victory was 0.135-second. 1, (2), Cliff White, Huntsville, AL, SCCA Spec Racer Ford, 13. 2, (6), Todd Harris, Portland, OR, SCCA Spec Racer Ford, 13. 3, (1), Brian Schofield, Lakeland, FL, SCCA Spec Racer Ford, 13. 8

The Green Lantern Inn has been a landmark in the Rochester New York area for over 125 years. Originally built as a private residence, the Inn was converted to a boarding house, a tavern, a full service restaurant and is presently a banquet facility. The Deland House, now known as the Green Lantern Inn was designed by Mr. John Thomas and is in the style of a French chateau. Started in 1875 and occupied in 1876, it is considered to be the best local example of high second empire architecture. Handicapped accessible entrance and parking off Route 250.

National News New Member Communication Options Available TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 19, 2012) – Sports Car Club of America has launched three new initiatives to better communicate information to members, including a Video Mailbag, the SCCA Official Blog and new content through Twitter. The SCCA Video Mailbag is an opportunity for members to submit questions about SCCA to the staff. Questions are up to the member, but the goal is for staff to offer insight into decisions or programs within the Club. This would be the type of question you might ask one of the staff if you were face-to-face at an event. The staff will collect questions and then record a video answer, courtesy of our friends at GoPro, the Official Camera of SCCA. Go to www.scca.com/mailbag to submit questions. Available at http://sccaofficial.blogspot.com, the new SCCA Official Blog is the opportunity to get a peek behind the scenes from the perspective of the SCCA Headquarters. Topics can range from more detail about a program or decision, to more lighthearted topics that pop up from time-

Majors to Replace Nationals by 2014
the intense competition of Championship racing within the SCCA.” A path to the National Championship Runoffs will exist through both the Majors and Regional programs. For 2013, that path includes Majors Conference Championships (comprised solely of Majors events) and the National and Divisional Point Championships (including all Majors and regular National events). Details of the 2014 path are still being determined, although the Board has committed for paths to exist for Runoffs-eligible classes through both the U.S. Majors Tour and Regional Racing.
TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 18, 2012) – Sports Car Club of America’s Board of Directors announced today the most significant change to its amateur road racing program in 50 years. Following the 2013 season, “National” racing will be phased out, with the U.S. Majors Tour serving as the top level of a two-tier SCCA Club Racing program in 2014. “As the U.S. Majors Tour gains momentum, it will take its natural position as the premier level of competition within SCCA’s amateur road racing program,” SCCA Chairman Jerry Wannarka said. “By 2014, amateur road racing will have two levels of racing – the U.S. Majors Tour and Regional Racing, with the Majors program focused on clustering the best and toughest competition and Regionals focused on local racing programs.” SCCA’s amateur road racing program has been tiered for more than half a century, with “National” racing serving as the top level. “Over the years, SCCA’s ‘National’ program has evolved across the country into something with little cohesion,” Wannarka continued. “With only a handful of General Competition Rules requirements separating a National event from a Regional event, these two programs have morphed, in many cases, into one type of event that is managed entirely at the local level.
“The goal is to have a very direct path to the Runoffs through the U.S. Majors Tour,” Wannarka said. “But, there will continue to be an additional path through local events that a driver might support throughout the year. It is important for both the U.S. Majors Tour and the Regional Racing programs to thrive. The Runoffs need to support this initiative with a qualification path for each.” Details on Championship point structures, 2013 events and Runoffs criteria will be announced in the coming weeks. Additional information is available at www.sccamajors. com.

“The changes over the next year will take the premier events, geared toward our National Championship drivers, and provide a better link through a series managed by the SCCA National Headquarters. For non-Majors events, this change will remove the limitations that holding a National event have historically placed on our Regions, providing the flexibility needed to customize their Regional Racing programs. “The focus of the Regional Racing format is on the experience of getting on track and racing wheel-to-wheel. The U.S. Majors Tour takes that same experience and focuses on

Rally Tom Langdon Interim Rally Chair
Rally Meeting Notes August 14, 2012
96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and any attempt to put into chronological order is beyond the ability of the author. The following eight RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Bill Laitenberger, Tom Langdon, Debbi Segal and Alan Smith. RallyCross Series The plan is to have the October 27th RallyCross be a night event. A RallyCross only budget needs to be prepared for the 2013 season. The last Saturday of January and February will be requested for the start of the 2013 season. Summer and Fall Rally Series Rick has redone an early rally. The “Genesee Valley 2012 Colour Tour” will run on Oct.14.
Genesee Valley Colour Tour 2012 Rick Barnes, Rallymaster
On Sunday, Oct. 14, five teams turned out to run the 2012 edition of the Genesee Valley Colour Tour, a fall-foliage social rally. The weather was reasonable – any day with temperatures in the mid ‘60s and no rain will qualify as such in NY during mid October – and leaves were just about at their peak color change. Some sunshine might have made them a little more brilliant, but all-in-all it was a fair fall day.

Lynn Randall, with the help of Mike Brunner will be rallymaster for the “Rally to the Glenn H. Curtis Museum scheduled for Nov. 3. This is a destination rally starting at Tom Wahl’s in Avon in Avon and ending at the museum in Hammondsport, NY. The flyer for this event was in the October issue of Top End and will also be in the November issue. Winter Rally Series A pre-Winter Rally Series, event will be organized by Carl Dresie. “Dust off the Cobwebs” will be written as a training/ learning event. The early stages will demonstrate the various instructions used in the winter series. Many of the instructions are included in the glossary of the general instructions. The Winter Rally Series is scheduled for Jan. 5, Jan. 19, Feb. 2, Feb. 16 and a March date to be named later. Alan Smith will be Rallymaster for the Jan. 5 event starting and ending at the Yard of Ale in Piffard. This will be the 2013 edition of “The Long Way Home. Gary Thomas and John Kastenhuber will again be rallymasters for the 4th annual “Ithaca Winter Rally.” (Fliers for these events are in the November issue of Top End. Ed.) Rallymasters for the remaining events will be named later. Miscellaneous Discussions Bill and Debbi did not have the rally gods with them at the recent national rally in Pittsburgh. The rally featured twisty-curvy roads and a Saturday finish at an exotic car dealership. Thirty-three points could not be explained even by the fractional CAS’s The route looped from Tom Wahl’s Restaurant in Avon, out through Lakeville, Livonia and the surrounding countryside, before returning to Avon. All told, the total competitive distance was just under sixty miles. Scoring was handled by way of trivia questions – competitors were given a list of twenty questions with their route instructions. The answers to these questions were found along the way.
Official results as follows: Place 1 (tie) 1 (tie) 1 (tie) 1 (tie) 5
Driver Anderson, Blair Scheible, Wayne Smith, Alan Zanni, Tony Perrin, Jim
and odd pauses. The computer needed the tenth mode with a zero to give correct calculations. Overall it was a great rally. Leaving Arizona, if you ask Bill and Debbi, can take several days. A bent trailer axle is not easily found. Cell phone problems only compound the problem. Tom Langdon is now a Rally safety steward trainer. If a charity rally is run in conjunction with STPR 2013, it will be conducted as a social rally. This format will have a maximum of 60 competitive miles. Tony Zanni is teaching on Tuesday and Thursday evenings through the spring. RallyCross information will need to be requested prior to the meeting. Notes will be sent to Tony as they are prepared. Curtis Braun is home, continuing rehabilitation for his stroke. Subaru odometers are just there for effect. The Massacre Rally is a trap rally based on the Rand McNally map book done on paper. Competitors have nearly two months to complete the rally. A number of Finger Lakes Region people have worked as teams for this rally in the past. Bill and Debbi have information on the rally and welcome other people on their team. More information can be found on the internet at: http://home. earthlink.net/~oldmaltese/massacre.html. St Valentine's Day Massacre
Despite some controversy regarding one or two of the answers, or perhaps the meaning of a question itself, everyone managed to do a decent job of finding the answers. Well enough, in fact, that four of the five competitors tied for the first place position and the remaining was just one point behind. In reality, everyone enjoyed the drive, had fun finding the answers, and left pleased. Well, at least as far as I could tell they did. So, it’s a win-win situation for all.

Dedicated to the memory of pioneer aviator, Glenn Curtiss, the museum contains a priceless collection relating to early aviation and local history. Curtiss began his career as a builder of bicycles, then motorcycles. In 1907 he became the “fastest man on earth” when he attained a speed of 136.4 MPH on his V-8 powered motorcycle. An exact reproduction of this bike is one of several Curtiss motorcycles that are on display. On July 4, 1908, Curtiss gained notoriety of a different kind when he flew his flying machine, the “June Bug”, a distance of over 5000 feet to win the Scientific American Trophy. This was the first pre-announced, public flight in America. A full-sized reproduction of the “June Bug” is one of several historic aircraft on display. Visit www.glennhcurtissmuseum.org/ for further information about both Glenn H. Curtiss as well as the museum.
