REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive One of the toughest jobs I have to do as Regional Executive is the day-to-day running of the region and thinking of what we can do to keep the region vibrant. I have not done a very good job in planning for the future and have spent most of my time on the day-to-day issues. So I’m going to look for some help, what can I do to get more people involved, whether it means coming to a meeting or attending an event. I’m not asking for someone to implement their ideas, I’ll take care of that; I need some suggestions on what we can do. Okay, what has been going on since September? Marsha and I attended Ken Buchel’s memorial service, or should I say party. (Ken is the driver who passed away due to injuries suffered at the Glen National race. See page eight of the September issue of Top End print version, page nine of the web version, Ed.) Barbara Buchel told us that they were trying to decide what Ken would have wanted and they decided that a party was required. There were well over 50 people in attendance with the rain from Irene starting about the same time. The Solo program had their last event at the Seneca Army Depot for the season and quite possibly forever. I won’t go into a lot of detail but to say that the Seneca County EDC voted five to zero to discontinue allowing car clubs to use the airfield for autocross events. They want to be guaranteed to get $20,000 per year for events, so there maybe some room to work with them, only time will tell. As many of you may be aware I bought a new Solo car, a 1994 C Street Prepared Mazda Miata. I started driving it in late July and found I was driving it like it was a front-wheel-drive car. After I noticed what I was doing wrong I feel like I have gotten better. There is only one problem,

4

the season is almost over. We have one more local event and then an event at Western New York. I am thinking about running the event the Glen Region is having at WGI during the driver’s school weekend, I don’t want the season to end! At this point we are planning on returning to Nelson Ledges and resurrecting Westward Ho! It seems that the region’s drivers like running at that track and I like going out there. We have some people who have ideas to improve the event and draw a larger crowd of drivers. Now this goes back to my first paragraph, do you have any ideas? Now I have one last program that needs to be addressed. Our RallyCross program has cancelled the last two events because of low attendance. We only run events when the field at Perry’s Park can handle the traffic (no events scheduled when the field may be real wet). Now we have had to cancel two events that were scheduled to run in the middle of summer when the field is at its driest. What do we need to do to make these events more attractive? The election season is upon us. The slate of candidates didn’t make it into the September issue of Top End so we have two options, a separate mailing listing the slate of candidates or delay the vote for one month. Should I tell you or let it be a surprise? Until next month… Mike

Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes September 13, 2011 Location: Burgundy Basin Inn, 1361 Marsh Road, Pittsford, New York 14534 Regional Executive Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:08 p.m. The following is arranged by topic and is not in chronological order. The July general membership meeting minutes were approved on a motion by Meridith Croucher, seconded by Mike Brunner. Note: The August issue of Top End was delivered late. The August general membership meeting minutes were approved on a motion by Lynn Randall, seconded by Brian Barlow. Activities - Barb Lissow An invitation has been received for the Rochester Auto Show, March 1-4, 2012. The October meeting will be a picnic at the Rotary Lodge in Camp Eastman. The region is providing hamburgers, hotdogs and soda. See the flyer in Top End. Fran McAllister is chairing a committee to bring in those who were involved in the sport during the early days of the club. Membership Report – Mike Brunner Mike reported that the region currently has 445, an increase of one since the August meeting. A review of the membership numbers for April through June showed a loss of 27 members. About one third of those members were college students and a few did not reside in the Finger Lakes region area. There were 26 members in attendance at the Solo and general membership meetings. New Business The Annual Meeting and Elections has been moved to the November 1 general membership meeting. This was

Treasurer’s Report - Elizabeth Thiel Elizabeth reported on the status of the treasury. Full financial details are available from her. The bank balance has grown from the amount reported for August 31 due to income from the Fun One. All bills presented to date have been paid. They include refunds from the Glen National race. Other expected income is the return of money from the bulk mail account. We no longer are using the bulk

mail account, Top End mailing is now handled through FedEx Office. A bill for the trademark usage fee will be presented to STPR®. The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 p.m. on a motion by Mike Brunner, seconded by Charles Tanck. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary Bench Racing Tapping the wristwatch is sometimes used as a signal to start the meeting. Question, why is East Aurora 90 miles west of Aurora. Maybe there is another Aurora. Rain and splashing water can cause photoelectric timing lights to not function properly. Was that a car or just a splash? The Glen Region is planning a Solo on the Sunday of the Last Chance event at Watkins Glen. Michelle Quinn, daughter of Finger Lakes Region members Paul and Jane placed first in F Mod Ladies at the Solo Nationals. Michelle is a member of Western New York Region. It is difficult to find $25 bills. Dave Skinner, who was involved in a crash with Russell Jaslow in 1998, sent Russell a note saying he would be at the Fun One. And should he bring a wrench so that they could relive good times. WGI may have banned them from being on the track at the same time. Bob Burns is home with a new hip. The comparison of safety equipment used in the late '50s and '60s with what is currently specified by the General Competition Rules shows how far the sport has progressed in the last 50 years. Bill Milliken, at age 100, drove a replica of his '50s vintage racecar at the recent vintage race event in Watkins Glen. Mike Toombs attended the memorial service for Ken Buchel, the driver who died from injuries sustained during the Glen National race. Hurricane Irene attended the party as well.

Race Report Fun One 2011 We currently have 165 entries. Entries can be checked on MotorsportReg.com. The garages have all been rented.

The Seneca County Economic Development Corporation voted at their August 19 meeting to halt use of the airstrip at the former Seneca Army Depot by outside groups starting in 2012. It is reported that $90,000 will be needed to repair the separation strips on the airstrip. A fee of $20,000 per year may allow the use of the airstrip. That could be raised on a per car charge.

The Glen region will be holding a blood drive at WGI on the promoter’s test day. Westward Ho! 2012 We will be going forward with this event. Fran McAllister met with Lew Giesy. A committee is desired to work on event details in an effort to keep costs down. Rally Report The only rally currently scheduled to run is the Oct 16 social rally. FLR News George Morris inducted into Walk Of Fame

By Gary Morgan Earlier this year Bob Henderson and I had a conversation regarding who each of

us thought would be a good candidate for the Watkins Glen Walk Of Fame. We both

picked the same person, George Morris. We both knew some of George’s racing history; he was his own engineer, mechanic, crew and driver. He was dedicated to doing things as they should be done and if he didn’t do it, it probably wasn’t done right. He also was a hard, fast and determined driver. I got to know George pretty well when on several occasions he invited me to drive the pace car with him at some of the Finger Lakes Region races. He was as serious about his performance with the pace car as he was when driving a racecar. When Bob and I proposed George as a candidate for the Walk Of Fame, Bill Green and Jim Scaptura, co- chairmen of the Watkins Glen Historical Committee, quickly agreed and approved it. George joined SCCA and started rallying his Mercedes 190 in 1956. He graduated to racing at the Holland Hill climb in 1957, obtained an SCCA race permit in 1958 and after racing Dunkirk and Watkins Glen, he received his SCCA license in 1959 and has experienced about everything racing has had to offer. George raced his 190 SL until 1967 when SCCA decided they would no longer include that car in their production car category. The next car George raced was his Porsche Speedster; he was very successful and won the Area 11 E-Production championship. In later years, after retiring the Porsche, George continued racing a VW in Improved Touring with much success. One experience George had, which most of us have not, was racing against his son. In a conversation with John, he told me how tough his father was on the track when they both raced in IT. John has been an accomplished racer for a number of years and shows the utmost respect for the lessons that George has given him. While talking to John and Bill Green, we decided that rather than to just recognize George’s racing success in a particular race, it would be more appropriate to recognize something that he is likely the

only one to have accomplished, that is, 50 years of racing, congratulations George! I now want to thank Jean Morris, George’s dedicated wife, for all of the good upbringing she has provided for George and her other five children throughout these 50 years of racing history

The company scans publications of car collectors, historians, auto and racing museums, etc., converting them to a digital archive. The magazines have been scanned in a highresolution (300 dpi) color PDF format and run through an OCR (optical character recognition) program, which makes them completely searchable. Every issue has been scanned from 1944 through 1970 – the “Golden Age of Auto Racing”. Issues include national/local race reports, entry lists, race schedules, photos, ads and feature articles. Everything is copied to a mid-sized USB flash drive (8GB, PC and Apple compatible) and organized by year and month. This format allows for ease of use and portability. "Based on my own knowledge and others who hold high esteem in the industry, the fact this in an entire set and scanned is very desirable and coveted," said Chad Struer, a representative for Sports Car Scan. "There is an exclusive licensing and distribution agreement in place with the Sports Car Club of America so there are no copyright violations." Free samples are available for viewing on the company's website at www.sportscarscan.com. A copy is available for $325, a $50 savings from the retail price, for SCCA members. Contact Struer at cs@sportscarscan.com or call 831-277-1118 for a discount code.

SCCA launches allnew web site TOPEKA, Kan. (Sept. 13, 2011) – Sports Car Club of America, Inc. has launched an all-new website at www. scca.com. Working with renowned motorsports web developer RACERSITES, the allnew site has been built to both address the needs of current members and potential members. “Our site needs to serve two core groups—current members and potential members,” SCCA President and CEO Jeff Dahnert said. “Both groups require a lot of the same information but presented in a different fashion.” The first time a user visits scca.com, they will see a page geared toward someone that might not be familiar with the organization, providing overall information and giving a tour of the club. For the general membership and advanced users looking for specific news or information, the SCCA Tour page can be closed, taking you to the full site. The Tour page will not appear again for a period of time, unless the user requests it in the main site. The main SCCA site contains news, event and membership information, rules, forms and downloads, multimedia links as well as social media feeds from Facebook and Twitter.

loop at the west end, long traverse to the other end, and finish back towards the middle after a 180 sweeper at the east end. All of the normal safety issues like speed, light poles and spectators were covered. There was also discussion on the details of turning this from a rough layout to a finished course. Initial planning for the picnic is underway. Looks like it will be in November. There was much discussion on local

sites should we not be allowed back into Seneca Army Depot. Several locations were discussed including Brockport, Roberts Wesleyan, Elmgrove, Irondequoit mall, Elmgrove and Letchworth. Finally, there was some discussion on Divisionals. Apparently there is a rule that says that each SCCA division has to host a divisional event. That rule may be changing. The general consensus is that divisional events no longer serve the same purpose that they did in the past.

September 13, 2011, 7:00 p.m. By George Modlin In attendance: Brian Buchman, Shaun Hallam, Mike Toombs, Mike Stutzman, Chris Bucknam, Jake Bucknam, Jeff Colegrove, George Modlin The first half of the meeting was spent discussing the upcoming event at Rochester Institute of Technology. The parking lot will look a little different since the grass dividers have been paved over and the bus stop is gone. The course won't cross the new pavement but the extra space will be leveraged. The course will use the large side of the lot with paddock and grid in the other side. The course will start roughly in the middle of the lot, do a
