REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive
Our race season finished another successful year with the 49th running of the Fun One. Each race offers its own challenges, from dealing with the track, to making sure we have enough workers, to making sure we thank the workers, to putting on a good weekend for the competitors. It takes a lot of up front work and a lot of work the weekend of the event to make the event a success. I need to thank a lot of people for all of their hard work. Garry Lippert for taking on the race chairman responsibilities, to the entire competition board for helping Gary out, to Charlie Tanck for getting the t-shirts and bringing them to the track on Thursday, to Elizabeth Thiel for working with catering at WGI for the lunches and our pig roast on Saturday night, to Elizabeth for sitting in the garage Sunday afternoon and selling t-shirts, to Marsha Toombs for all of the work that goes into being the registrar of an event. There are several WGI employees that go above and beyond what is required to help us out and we need to make sure that they know we appreciate their help. But like all events that we put on at a race track, it takes more than the Finger Lakes Region to do it. There were Glen, Western New York, Steel Cities, Northern New Jersey, New York and I’m sure other Regions I missed, there helping us out. Well, the annual meeting and election of 4
officers is coming up in October. Unfortunately, there is no competition for any positions on the board of directors. In a way I think this is unfortunate, but I also think this is a good thing. I like it when people want to get involved in running the club, but don’t like it when someone who wants to become involved, runs for office and doesn’t win. So if you may want to get involved remember, there will be another election next year and think about stepping up. Right now I’m on my “Giving Thanks Tour.” I know that without a lot of help from a lot of people over the eight years I wouldn’t have been able to do the job of Regional Executive. I’ve tried to thank people when they helped, but I might have missed a few. I want everyone who helped me, listened to me and offered a potential solution, or sometimes just listened to me, to know I appreciated your help, whether I expressed it or not. To the people who I couldn’t help, I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to help you out, but please keep trying, it’s everyone’s club. The past couple of years have been tough. Last year’s Solo and racing programs both lost money. We made some cut backs and were forced to raise entries in hopes of returning the region to solvency. Top End is a drag on the bottom line, but I still support the continued printing of the monthly newsletter. I have seen what happens to some regions when they discontinue printing monthly newsletters and have gone to an online only newsletter, and I don’t want that to happen to us. We need to find a new location for the monthly meetings. Murph’s is good place, but the shape of the room and two machines at the end sometimes make it difficult to have meetings there. We have looked at other places, but we have yet to find a
PROVIDING THE RACING COMMUNITY WITH INSURANCE AND DISABILITY INCOME FOR OVER 40 YEARS.
place that meets our needs. If you know of a place and think it might work, please talk to someone on the board and we will check it out. The Solo program has their last event planned for the first weekend in October. Speaking of Solo I must offer an apology to a couple of people. Last month I stated that there were no Finger Lakes members going to the Solo Nationals and I was wrong. I would like to offer my sincerest apology to Alan and Adam Schoonmaker. When I was checking to see if anyone was registered I looked for NY (you can’t look for region on MotorsportReg) and didn’t notice Alan and Adam, who are members and live in North Carolina. And of course, I have to mention that our Area 10 director and region member John Walsh was also in Lincoln during Nationals. The same weekend as our last Solo event, the Glen Region is having their Last Chance Race at WGI. They are trying something new with having a Race Experience session on Friday. For $150.00 you can have three hours of time on the track, no SCCA competition license required (or allowed). All you need is a race car with a GCR legal roll cage (car doesn’t need to be GCR legal), a legal helmet and driving suit (Hans type device recommended but not required) and you can go racing – with some restrictions. Sounds like fun to me, I hope that enough people signup so that it can become a yearly thing. Until next month… Mike

JOHN MAGEE, WATKINS GLEN “WALK OF FAME”, SEPT. 6, 2013.
One of the best drivers that ever raced a Formula Vee car! That’s how people described our Finger Lakes Region driver John Magee. John proved he was one of the best and wasn’t afraid or intimidated by racing against some of the best drivers in the world. Back as far as 1964 thru 1967 John Magee was racing at events such as those at Nassau Speed Week against top drivers like Chris Amon, C. Peterson, Ray Caldwell, Charlie Parsons, Bruce McLaren, Peter & Doug Revson, Pedro Rrodriquez, Bob Bondurant, Charlie Kolb, A. Foyt, Mike Rothschild, Sam Posey, Geo. Wintersteen, and Dan Gurney. The fields were as large as thirty or more cars and John Magee finished as high as fourth and tenth positions. The races at these events ranged from five lap qualifiers to 100 and 200 mile Formula Vee Championship Races, it was here that John Magee demonstrated; he was a first class driver! A number of accomplishments for the years 1964 through 1970 were noted. Including Finger Lakes Region, Driver of The Year for five years. Also ne of three Formula Vee drivers selected by VW of America to represent them in two FV races in Europe. John was obviously a great driver and was someone not many of us knew very well, but he was someone we all respected. Thanks to Bill Green and The Watkins Glen Historical Committee, we say, John rest in peace, with this stone, now you will never be forgotten! Sponsor: Gary Morgan

Rally Tom Langdon Interim Rally Chair
Rally Meeting Notes September 10, 2013 96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order. The following nine RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore and Tony Zanni.
General Rally
The October rally meeting date has been changed from Oct. 8 to Oct. 15. Ben Gilmore is running for a director’s position on the 2014-2015 board. Ben should be able to bring the rally interest to the board. Events need to be promoted at the local colleges in addition to Facebook and other social media. Additional effort is needed to promote RoadRally, RallyCross, etc. at the other region events. A winter series flyer needs to be put together. Carl will send out an old version. Debbi Segall created flyers in the past.
Summer and Fall Rallies
Rick has written a social rally to be run on Oct. 5. A flyer for the Genesee Valley Colour Tour 2013 is in the September issue of Top End and will be in the October issue. Carl can safety check the event.
10
Lynn Randall has a social rally to Bully Hill scheduled for Oct. 19. A flyer is in the September online Top End and will be in both October issues.
2014 Winter Rally Series
The winter series schedule is: Jan. 4 - Finger Lakes Region Winter Rally Series, The Long Way Home ‘13, Alan Smith, (asmith2357@aol.com / (585) 359-4688 J a n . 1 8 - Fi n g e r Lakes Region Winter Rally Series, Ithaca Winter Rally, Manos Diner, 357 Elmira Rd (Route 13) in Ithaca, NY, (Contact Gary T h o m a s @ g a r y. george.thomas@ gmail.com / (607) 277-0501) Feb. 1 - TBA Feb. 22 - Finger Lakes Region Winter Rally Series, Karl Haltiner @ HaltinerKM@aol. com / (585) 425-4569 March 8 - Finger Lakes Region Winter Rally Series, Rick Barnes (rbarnes@ torsen.com / (585) 967-3762 A rallymaster is needed for the second February event. Get any changes desired to the general instructions to Tom Langdon. The 2013 Generals can be found at: http://www.flrscca.com/rally/2013/2013_WRS_GIs.pdf
RallyCross
The August RallyCross had 27 entrants. Results will be printed in the October issue of Top End. The recent RallyCross events were timed using photocells wirelessly inputting into a computer running a program similar to that used by Solo. If that equipment is not available there are several options: 1) Using the clocks with manual input into an EXCEL spreadsheet; 2) Using the race photocells (which are no longer used and may be in the possession of the Solo group) wired to a computer; 3) The second option with the purchase of wireless equipment. The Solo style program has the ability to include car capability adjustments (PAX). Timing can also be done via pressure tubes.
A printer on site at a RallyCross would help in sorting out results. Results for the August event may have had several people listed in the wrong class. Use of a “stage rally” scoring process has been proposed. Issues to be considered include increased time, accumulating times for scoring, educating the competitors, off course allowance and equipment usage. RallyCross safety stewards are needed. The next RallyCross event is scheduled for Sept. 28 at Perry’s Park.
STPR®
The Wellsboro Winter Rally is tentatively being scheduled for Feb. 15. 2014.
Miscellaneous Discussions
Promote, promote, promote (Facebook, etc.) National calendar needs about 45 days and is done through the sanction application. For all activities. Ben asked if the board structure could be adjusted to insure that each activity is represented. How to get the region to be more cohesive was discussed. Would restructuring the meetings lead in that direction? More “bench racing” could be a way to increase socialization. It was mentioned that the rally business could be covered in less than a half hour, but that the “bench racing” makes the meeting worthwhile. How do we get participants in the events to volunteer to help running events? Incentive programs, etc. are possibilities. Carl volunteered to analyze participation number for race, RoadRally, RallyCross and Solo. Tony will be running Black River Stages with Rich Smith on Sept. 21 and 22. Team tactics in racing, in NASCAR, Formula 1, World Rally, etc. leads to interesting results. Tony noted that having earlier cars “sweep the stage” has not been a big help. Andy Smith needed Alan’s (Dad’s) help with the pedals to drive a car. Due to Tom Langdon’s Irish vacation, wiener dogs and submarines were not topics of the conversation.
