REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive September, it can’t be that late in the year. That means the 40th Annual Solo Nationals are right around the corner. That means that the Fun One is a couple of weeks after that and that the RunOffs® is right after the Fun One. This summer went to fast! Due to scheduling problems the local Solo season is already over. There are a large number of people who make the trek to Lincoln, Nebraska and the Solo Nationals. I had hoped to be one of them, but felt that it wouldn’t be a good idea to start a new job and ask for a week off three weeks later, maybe next year. Last year we didn’t have any drivers at the RunOffs® and I’m not sure if we are going to have any this year, let’s hope we do. I’m sure there are several workers making the trip to Road America. Registration for the Fun One opened on a Sunday night, we never told anyone and we had 15 entries in the first 24 hours, not bad. A lot of work goes into making this event a success every year and I for one appreciate it. Of course we are going to have the Pig Roast on Saturday night, what would the Fun One be without the pig. Of course I especially appreciate both Chris De Minco and Elizabeth Thiel for stepping up and agreeing to chair the event. It’s always tough to balance track time with the cost of running events at The Glen and Chris has tried to keep the overtime down and the track time up. Elizabeth has put in all kinds of work getting everything ordered and arranged and with both of them putting in the time I’m sure that this event will be one not to miss.
4
Well I needed to get together a nominating committee so that we can put a slate of candidates together for next year. I know that July seems to be early for said committee and I kept forgetting it, but with the required schedule for publication and getting the ballots out the time is necessary. So I eventually got the committee together and I’m sure they are going to put up a good slate of candidates. So please take the time and vote. These positions are important for the region and we need good leaders to help grow the region.
Meeting Minutes
Last year we had the Old Driver’s picnic and that was a great success. We are going to be doing it again on the 11th of September. This year it will be at the Scottsville Firehouse. Check out the flyer in Top End and I hope to see you there.
The following is arranged by topic and may not be in chronological order.
Well I find myself at the end of my column with nothing more to say. I need some kind of closing statement that will get everyone going and interested in the region. I need, no; we need everyone’s help to grow the region. So have I accomplished it? Until next month, Mike
Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes August 7, 2012 Location: Murph’s Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit, NY 14617 Regional Executive Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:12 p.m.

September 2012
(See the treasurer’s report.) Several ideas for making the weekend better in 2013 came out of the event. Fun One 2012 The Fun One currently has 26 entries. There will be seven race groups with a 20 minute qualifying session followed by a 25 minute race, using the long course on Saturday and the short course on Sunday. We will again have the popular pig roast Saturday after the racing. New race tracks John Walsh reported on the New York Safety Track, being built near Davenport (east of Oneonta, near I88 between Binghamton and Albany. The track is scheduled to open in May of 2013. More information can be found by searching for “New York Safety Track.” There is no news on Central New York Raceway Park. Rally Report - Alan Smith Rally Cross The July 28 RallyCross had six competitors making 16 runs. (Results are printed in the September issue of Top End. Ed.) Kurt Thiel mentioned that RallyCross events have been run at Black Rock speedway in Dundee. John Walsh mentioned the possibility of running an event at Watkins Glen International in conjunction with the Fun One. Summer Road Rallies The rally to the Glenn H Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport has been rescheduled to November 3. Lynn Randall is rallymaster for this 60 competitive mile social rally. Solo Report – Jeff Colegrove The sixth event of the 2012 Finger Lakes Region’s Solo series was held August 5 at the Rochester Institute of Technology with 76 cars registered. It was called after the lunch break due to heavy rain. Everyone was able to complete three runs. The Solo will be held at RIT on August 11.
2012 September
Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel Elizabeth reported the checking account balance. The amount reflects payments and receipts for Westward Ho, Top End, RallyCross, membership recognition awards, officer’s bond and insurance. Funds will be moved from the savings account to checking to cover the full rental of Watkins Glen International. Westward Ho will show a loss of about $900. The Wealth Strategies report is available for review. Financial statements are available for review from Elizabeth. The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by Chris DeMinco, seconded by John Walsh. The meeting was adjourned on a motion by Alan Smith, seconded by Carl Dresie. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary Program – Adrienne Hughes and Roy Hopkins Roy and Adrienne competed together in Targa Newfoundland from 2003 through 2010. 2006 through 2009 in their “Woodstock” and in 2010 in the Dart. Both later navigated in separate cars. The Targa is well liked by the local Newfoundlanders; they are wonderful people and are willing to help anyone having a problem. The event is well organized and covers a week around the island. (There is significant coverage and information on the Targa on the internet. Search and enjoy! Ed.) Videos of the event were shown, starting with a “professional” coverage. Several in car videos taken from Adrienne and Roy’s car were then shown. The last two were of Woodstock at the Pittsburgh Grand Prix in Schenley Park and ice racing on Waneta Lake.
Finger Lakes Region, SCCA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes July 31, 2012 Location: Murph’s Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit, NY 14617 Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 7:38 p.m. Officers and directors present: Michael Toombs, Regional Executive; Dave Ciufo, Assistant Regional Executive; Elizabeth Thiel, Treasurer; Carl Dresie, Secretary; Chris DeMinco, Fran McAllister and Charles Tanck, Directors. Items are presented by subject and may not be in chronological order. The minutes of the June 26, 2012 board of directors meeting were approved on a motion by Dave, seconded by Elizabeth. Activities Report Adrienne Hughes and Roy Hopkins will give a presentation on Targa Newfoundland at the August 7 meeting. Bob Henderson will be talking about his boat trip from Geneva, NY to Florida at the September 4 meeting. The September 11 driver’s meeting will be a dessert social, not a picnic. Fran and committee will be contacting the older drivers. S u g g es t i o n s fo r m e m b e r s h i p involvement were discussed. Ideas for events are welcome. The calendaring process needs to be printed in Top End. Old Business The nominating committee is in place. Four committee members have been named. The membership recognition picnic went over well. Frames will be sent out for the member drawings. A favor will be sent to the long term members that were not present. 5
Race Report Fun One 2012 – Chris DeMinco The supplemental regulations (supps) were reviewed. They will be sent in next week. The schedule has been accepted, groupings may still change. Stewards have been named for the weekend. Registration will be done with the windows assigned to the driver’s last name alphabetically. Trophies have been selected. T-shirts have been designed; you will have to wait until the weekend to see the design. Dave Ciufo raised the question of putting advertising on the backs of the t-shirts. Westward Ho! 2012 An alternative to Westward Ho! is to alternate the May weekend with the Glen region. Could we run a PDX along with a test day at Nelson Ledges? Dave noted the website: roadracingworld.com/magazine/ track-day-directory/ as a source of information for track days. General Racing The registration process was discussed from entering through MotorsportReg.com the signing the waivers. A problem with an express lane is incomplete information in the application. Rally Report A social rally to the Glenn H Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport is being developed. Rick Barnes will be doing a social rally October 14. RallyCross dates have been requested through the end of the year. Solo Report The next Solo is this coming Sunday at RIT followed by another the following Saturday. The move to Saturday was to accommodate Western New York Region at Ralph Wilson Stadium. There will not be any more events at RIT this year due to construction. A Solo on ice would need to be sanctioned as a RallyCross. Mike suggested that we contact the Seneca Army Depot about renting the area

we Solo on for the year. One person would then be responsible for all scheduling at SeAD. Treasurer’s Report – Elizabeth Thiel The profit and loss by class statement for January 1 through July 31, 2012 was distributed for review. All but some of the bills for Westward Ho! were included in the statement. Everything has been balanced. All but two items are included. A bill for $2,900 from Action Ambulance for Westward Ho! has yet to be billed. Considering the amount paid last year we should be slightly negative for Westward Ho! Membership services expenses are not included in the balance. The fairgrounds rental fee has been returned. Due to submission errors, the new members from the Solo series was credited as weekend memberships by the national office. Mike has talked to them and the member status is being corrected. There were 16 memberships involved. The treasurer’s report was accepted on a motion by Chris, seconded by Charlie. The meeting was adjourned at 9:12 p.m. on a motion by Dave, seconded by Chris. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary

From the Editor’s Bench Top End Delivery
The problems in the US Post Office ave resulted in bulkmail taking ten days or longer to be processed and delivered. That delay, along with the time required for FedEx to print and deliver Top End to the post office, means that the previous 15 day lead time no longer is enough to get the issue delivered before the general membership meeting. The goal date for delivery to FedEx is being moved up to 19 days before the meeting. This moves the deadline for submission of articles to three weeks before the meeting. Articles, classified ads, etc. should be sent by the 12th.

Membership Recognition 35 year members Lew and Wilma Giesy and Alf Zeller along with 30 year members Michael Cianciosi and Judy Schoonmaker were not printed in the August issue of Top End but are printed here in the September issue. Ed.
Alf Zeller, 35-year member Alf Zeller has continued to be a member of FLR for 35 years, even though he no longer races. You do not see him at meetings, or other activities, because Alf lives in a suburb of Toronto. Alf drove a CSR, otherwise known as a C Sports Racer. In 1974, he was first in NYSRRC for CSR. In 1980, the region recognized Alf with the Most Improved Driver award. In 1981, he took second in the Northeast division in his CSR, and went to the Runoffs in Atlanta. He went to the Runoffs in 1979-1981 and 1983-1985, finishing as high as third in 1983. Thank you for your loyalty to the Region, Alf.

Lew and Wilma Giesy,35-year members Both Lew and Wilma have been SCCA members since 1977, and have contributed much to the Region. In no particular order, Lew has held a National Competition License, driving a Showroom Stock Neon. He is currently a National Chief Steward. Lew has held several offices in Finger Lakes Region, and has been RE for six years, holding two three year terms. He is tied with Mike Toombs for this honor. Lew has also been both a regional and national race chair, and has been instrumental in our Region’s involvement at Nelson Ledges, as an alternative track to run our Regional events. To honor these accomplishments, he has been awarded the Region’s top three awards, Outstanding Worker, Sportsmanship Award, and Outstanding Contribution to the Region. Wilma has been active in the region for the same number of years. She holds a National F and C license, and a National Registrar’s license. Wilma has been Asst. Race chair of several events, as well as a staunch backer of all Lew’s sports car endeavors. Wilma has acquired her
infinite patience, because of her many years teaching Kindergarten! The family loves racing so much, their cat decided to spend one winter at the Glen Club, coming back to them in the spring, realizing there is no place like home.
Judy Schoonmaker, 30-year member
A Force to be Reckoned With Alan Schoonmaker with MaryAnne Shults Judy Schoonmaker joined Finger Lakes Region in 1982. Her friendly smile and jovial demeanor fooled many once behind the wheel of whatever largebore vehicle she was driving because she quite often kicked butt in the various classes in which she competed in not only the FLR Solo II Championship Series, but divisional and national events as well. Over the years, she proved to be a dedicated, hard-working volunteer in many facets of the region's everburgeoning Solo II program, taking on various roles such as chief of registration, trophies, and more. She was also the editor of the Xerox Auto Club's newsletter. "She'll say she didn't do much," wrote husband Alan in an e-mail.
35-year members Lew and Wilma Giesy Mike Brunner photo 8
"But, I think she has some impressive accomplishments." The region awarded her the Alix Lafontant Trophy for outstanding sportsmanship in 1984 and she and Alan earned the Marv and Eunice Brudno Trophy for their outstanding contribution to the region's Solo II program. Two years later, Judy’s multitasking paid off and she received the Solo program's highest honor once again. Carl Blokker was the Solo Chair that year and said today he cannot remember any one particular reason Judy got the award. "I do remember that any time I needed help I could ask Judy and she would do what ever she could to help the events run as smooth as possible," Blokker said. On the competition side, she not only won several different classes at the local level, but a National Championship in 1988 in E Street Prepared Ladies driving a Camaro Z28. Add to that, three additional second-place National finishes and eight Northeast Division championships. "Two of her second-place National finishes are nearly as impressive as her win. First, she never competed in classes without competition and rarely less than 10 in the class," Alan said. "Her first second place was to Rita Parke (Haltiner, Edinger) in our car!

September 2012
Parke, also a Finger Lakes Region member, was the national champion in F Stock Ladies four consecutive years, 1981 to 1984. "The year before Judy won, she finished second to a 454 Corvette with our 305 Camaro by .6 seconds over two days, "Alan added.”Pony cars got their own class the next year." Her dedication and passion for autocross did not diminish the same for her family. Her husband Alan was also an accomplished competitor, former Solo II chair, and wearer of a variety of hats within the region's administration. Not surprisingly, son Adam says his passion for autocross began at the point of conception. Judy kept a secret from most when competing at the Solo II Nationals in September 1984. In less than a year, she would give birth to son Adam. "What few knew is that she was also baking a little bun in her womb... ME! So, to say that I have been autocrossing my whole life is not much of an understatement. My first National Championships was one month past conception." Adam laughed about a story his father told him that at an autocross during late term, Judy was tired of being pregnant and just wanted to get it over with. "Mom was driving our 1985 TransAm with the tilt wheel all the way up at the region's first event of the '85 season," Adam said. "The story goes that many times that day Mom said, 'I wish this kid would just come out already!' Rumor has it that she was racing that day to induce labor, but all she did was put more oil in my blood and made darn sure her little boy would be an autocrosser just like her." Adam did go on to be quite successful in Solo II, following his parents' example. After Adam and his brother Nicolas moved south, Alan and Judy decided it was time to get away from

the upstate New York winters, and they moved to Concord, N.C. in 2007 to be closer to their boys. Although she and her family now live well out of the geographic area of FLR, Judy has maintained not only her region membership, but her friends and memories they all created in cone-filled parking lots.
Michael Cianciosi, 30-year member My interest in SCCA started when I was a kid watching Can-Am and the early Trans-Am on TV. Road racing looked much more appealing than stock car racing. As a teen and through my college years, I used to go to the Glen to watch Formula One; I just loved all forms of road racing. Once out of college, my first job was in Rochester, where I worked with George Morris. In talking to George at work, I discovered he was a racer and he filled me on the Finger Lakes Region meetings; thus, I joined the region. When I first joined the club, I did Solo for a little while. In one Solo event I beat the times of an RX7 and a 5-liter Mustang with my 4-cylinder International Scout 4X4. Those two drivers were not happy about that. That was quite memorable for me though. Where did I go from there—on to road racing of course. I worked F&C for quite a few years, working a lot of events for SCCA, IMSA, NASCAR, Motorcycle road racers, Skip Barber and other schools, etc. I crewed for George Morris for more years than I can remember. Really, after a while it all became a blur. I push started George's Porsche so many times I was going to buy a new starter for it myself. George finally broke down and got a new starter, but not before I wore out several pairs of sneakers push starting the car. You know how George is.
30-year member, Mike Cianciosi Mike Brunner photo. I lost track of how many engines I helped George build, how many times we rebuilt the transaxle, cleaning parts, cleaning the slicks, applying traction compound, etc, etc. George won quite a few NYSRRC trophies during those years. George finally retired the Porsche and we partnered on the 16-valve Golf for a while. After a time George bought out my half of the partnership. I also helped him maintain the old timing system he built for the club a long time ago—bet hardly anyone remembers that system. Along the way, I helped crew for a few other drivers as well. Finally got my competition license after going through novice school with an ITA Toyota MR2 and road raced for a few years. My first race was at Nelson Ledges. There was another student with an ITA MR2 who got signed off to race that weekend as well. During that first race, he and I were going at it so hard the instructors were making book on which one of us would beat the other. I beat the other guy. After the race the instructors came over and told us about them betting on us and that we put on really great show. That was quite memorable...First race, win, kudos from the instructors...awesome. I was hooked...gotta get me more of this! Then I went on to race Volkswagens. The racing fun-per-dollar ratio was much more favorable with the VWs. You 9
probably have an idea of how I prepared my race cars from when Mark bought my Rabbit, how it was set up, and the spares he hauled away. I worked up to a National competition license and did a lot of regional races with the Rabbit at the Glen, Lime Rock, and Nelson Ledges. I also did some endurance racing at the Glen and Nelson with the Rabbit and at Summit with Kurt Thiel and Bob McDonald in Kurt’s ITA Golf. I worked as an instructor for a few years for SCCA as well as Porsche club, BMW club, and Track Masters; was on the competition board for a few years, drove the pace car a little, was in the stewards' program for a while. I also worked registration occasionally at Watkins Glen and Nelson Ledges. I helped with the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally (STPR) a little along the way, serving on the organization committee and working tech inspection at the event once. I served on the board of directors for a while and was Assistant Regional Executive for a couple years and was even RE for a couple years. During that tenure, I filled in for the treasurer when I we didn’t have anyone to fill that position for a while. Really with all the vowels in my last name, they trusted me with the club's finances! Well maybe that was a little more than a little history. After all it’s been 30 years and some of those years were pretty well jam-packed with tons of SCCA fun. Particularly considering I haven’t been very active in the club for about the last 10 years due to my working situation. I get plenty of seat time on the Thruway driving to Syracuse for work every day. I do get to keep my racing skills up though, practice visualization skills, keep reflexes sharp, dodge trucks and other drivers who are texting and talking on their cell phones, running 65-75 mph in the snow, etc. Got to stay sharp out there—some days its worse on the Thruway than the start of an ITB race with a field of 30-plus cars. Going 10
across the Montezuma Swamp, I try to imagine I am on the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans, only with a particularly uncompetitive car. Ah, you can take the driver out of road racing but you can’t take road racing out of the driver—it never goes away. There are some twisty bits the last mile or so to work, so its mash the throttle, up through gears, hammer the brake, heel-and-toe rowing down through gears for a few curves and into the parking lot. Ah, I still got it; what’s that smell? Oh, the clutch was slipping a bit. By the way that’s with my Chevy Cobalt. Anybody can drive a powerful car fast—takes a bit of skill to drive an underpowered car fast—that would be SCCA Road Racing Skill.

Statement on Goodyear Slick Availability
Sports Car Club of America has received numerous comments and concerns over tire supply from Goodyear Tire for the remainder of the 2012 season. We have inquired from Goodyear and received the following statement: “The demand for Goodyear sports car tires has outpaced our 2012 forecast by over 25%. Unfortunately, this has created shortages of some specific codes for our customers. Production has been prioritized by our contractual commitments and those codes with the highest demand. This will result in the inventory of some codes not being replenished before the end of the season. We apologize for the difficulty this may cause some customers.”
2814 – 21.0x5.0-15 R430 2815 – 22.5x5.5-15 R430 Racers are encouraged to check with their dealers as some may still have remaining supply of these tires. Racers with contingency awards from 2012 that are not able to redeem due to availability will have those awards honored in 2013.
SCCA Tabs Kummer As Director of Club Racing TOPEKA, Kan. (July 6, 2012) – The Sports Car Club of America today announced an addition to its full time staff, naming Butch Kummer to the newly created Director of Club Racing. Kummer’s role with the organization will focus on the National Office-operated programs, specifically the 2013 rollout of the Majors program. Kummer will work closely with the regions to put together those events and will oversee and guide the Club Racing Technical Department. A 30-year member of SCCA, Kummer has worked with the SouthEast Division and Atlanta Region in a variety of leadership capacities, and has helped to restore the American Road Race of Champions to one of the premier events on the schedule. Kummer is also a long time racer, with wins behind the wheel of both SCCA Club Racing and Solo cars. In his position, Kummer will report to Terry Ozment, the Vice President of Club Racing. “When we posted this position, we wanted someone familiar with the Club and the challenges the Regions face,” said Ozment. “Butch’s experience in all facets of SCCA activities fit that bill, and we’re glad to have him on board.”
Per Goodyear, the tires subject to shortages are as follows:
Initially, Kummer will split time working from both the National office in Topeka and his Woodstock, Ga., home, where he lives with his wife, Harriett.
GT & Production 1705 – 20.0x8.0-13 R430 1711 – 20.0x9.5-13 R430 2069 – 23.0x9.0-15 R250 1873 – 23.0x9.0-15 R475 1783 – 23.0x9.0-15 R600 Sports GT 1653 – 23.5x11.5-16 R430 Sports Car Radial 5875 – 23.5x10.5-16 R210 5880 – 25.5x12.0-16 R210 Formula
Kummer can be reached at bkummer@ scca.com.
Once this job came open, I knew it was something I wanted to do,” Kummer said. “I’ve been passionate about racing my entire life, and as a long-time member of the SCCA I want to do my part to help keep the Club moving in such a positive direction. There’s a lot to learn, but we’ve got some great people working on this Majors concept and I’m looking forward to helping build the program.”

September 2012
Rally Tom Langdon Interim Rally Chair
Rally Meeting Notes August 14, 2012
96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and any semblance of chronological order is impossible. The following seven RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon, Alan Smith and Tony Zanni. The Yahoo calendar function is still not working properly. The September Rally meeting has been moved to the 20th, due to a work commitment by Rick Barnes. Location and time of day will be the same. RallyCross Series Tony has purchased four helmets, one small, two medium, one large for use as loaners at the RallyCross events. Tom has a 2005 helmet that he will donate to the series. The July RallyCross had six entries with 16 runs each. With three drivers, one of the loaner cars made over 50 runs if you count the “pre-runs.” The rain that ended in the morning kept the ground damp enough that there was not a dust problem. A rookie won the event with Tony’s help. The Perry-Warsaw airport has been contacted and arrangements are being made to run the September 29 RallyCross in the field adjacent to the runway. Tony has outlined a course. Parking/paddock has been defined; a traffic control person
2012 September
is needed to control crossing the runway. Help is needed in moving equipment. The plan is to have the October 27th RallyCross be a night event. Ben has the goal of having his RallyCross course available for the November 17 series event. The championship points system for the RallyCross series will be that used in New England. Classes will be based on the needs of the competitors. Two wheel stock and two wheel open classes will be part of the points system. Tom will provide a computer capable of running the scoring system. Alan, with Tony, will write an EXCEL program to do the scoring and keep championship points. Even with the loss of a few cones to an agricultural implement there is still a sufficient number of them to set a course. A RallyCross only budget needs to be prepared for the 2013 season. The last Saturday of January and February will be requested for the start of the 2013 season. Summer Rally Series The destination rally has been rescheduled to November 3. Lynn Randall is the rallymaster. Rick will be writing a “social” rally to be run October 14. Winter Rally Series December 1 will be requested for the running of a pre-Winter Rally Series, event. This will be an opportunity to refresh driving and navigating skills, practice new techniques and/or learn how to compete in a winter rally. Worker training will also be available.
Jerry passed around an example of a trophy plaque on which small plaques could be applied for each event where a trophy is won. Miscellaneous Discussions The Wellsboro Winter Rally will be scheduled around Valentine’s Day, depending upon Waste Management. Tom is a rally safety steward trainer. Anyone wanting to be a licensed RoadRally or RallyCross steward should download the form from the national site and provide the needed information. Tom will then schedule a training session. Jim’s story about the Jeep at the New England rally is well worth the read. Finger Lakes and Central New York are among the few regions that run a RallyCross event as anything more than an AutoCross on a dirt parking lot. The goal is to have the Rally CRX finished to the point that it can run at the September RallyCross. Subaru engines have been used in VW van conversions and experimental aircraft. It is important to define a braking point when checking the top speed of a car on an airport runway. Canandaigua restaurants were discussed, anything from Mexican to Italian to German. Weiner dogs and submarines were not mentioned. Other subjects are not reported to protect the reputation of the attendees.
The first and third Saturdays of January and February, Jan 5, Jan 19, Feb 2, Feb 16 and a March date will be requested for the 2013 Winter Rally Series. Rallymasters will be named later. Options to the trophy plaque with small applied plaques Jerry demonstrated at the July meeting are glasses with stickers for each event. The series information could be silk screened onto the glass.

Jeremy Keck and Brandon West showed up from Wellsboro with their Subarus again and got the runs going. It was as slippery out there as Bon Jovi’s first album and that is putting it mildly. It didn’t matter how much power you had, or what kind of tires you had it was tough going. Finding grip was as hard as finding a gear in a Lotus Espirit. Some how they did and got around in pretty good time. Nate Michals showed up and drove Jim Perrin’s Team Hazard Rally Slo-buru in the first run group warming it up for Tony Zanni and Erik Voelkle who were driving it in run group two. With six competitors we decided that eight runs per run group was a good idea, (insert your own Danger Zone reference here) and it was. The field was starting to dry out and someone actually got the grill started for lunch before the second group was finished with their first set of runs. Ryan Kolupa of New Hartford, N.Y., drove his WRX wagon to a good finish 3rd overall, even after popping a bead and having to switch to a summer tire on one corner of the car. Rookie Erik Voellkle*and Tony Zanni were also driving Perrin’s THR Slo-buru, which turned out to be not so slow. Erik was leading at the break, with the help of his teacher, Zanni on the e-brake. I bet Voelkleler* is in a band, he’s got the looks like Wham has George Michael. Eight runs were made by each competitor before lunch was ready. The sun had come out and the course started drying out, which made Perrin a little bummed he didn’t run. But we thank him none the less for doing timing for us all day. He’s kind of awesome that way. After lunch we got back to it. Minimum dust,

All in all, a great soggy start with a fast dustless afternoon set of runs made for a great second event. Full results are printed in this issue of Top End. A great big thank you to Jim Perrin for helping out with scoring and registration and everything else, Bruce for the use of the field, Monica Roche, http://rochephoto.wix.com/rochegallery and Darren Ohara, for shooting photos and everyone for coming out and running! The next RallyCross is August 25, and then we’re going to try a new location on September 29. See the website for details. Until then Rock out with your shocks out. Rain poured down all night, and finally let up around 10 a.m. Several drivers and photographers anxiously awaited the decision to run or go home. With Danger Zone playing in my head and drivers from Pennsylvania, we weren’t about to cancel this event. It was on, a quick registration and tech session, a parade lap and we were off to a slippery start around 11a.m.

maximum fun, 16 runs for the day! Lessons learned though, don’t show the new guy all your tricks, and don’t try so hard when taking the photographers for a lap during your runs, and if you drive out - enter. Perrin had one lap in the afternoon, (Shhhh) and tied Zanni for FTD with a 1.44 over the .74 mile course. Zanni had 2 runs where he was showing off a little too much while he took the photographers for a spin and spun out in to the Danger Zone missing a cone. A not so quick loop around to not get an off course penalty put him just behind the RallyCross rookie Voelkkler*, for second place over all. Congratulations to Voklelker* for his rookie event and leaving with nice clean consistent runs and the win.

Willie’s Sticky Tires By LKEiserd
(Reprinted, with editng, from the May 2003 issue of Top End, by permission of the author.) Many of you have seen W. G. “Willie” Phast at the occasional Solo, working at the track race or navigating a RoadRally. If you have talked to him, you know that he is a “try anything” kind of guy. I got to know Willie better when we were assigned to the Q71 project at the smokestacks down the road. Through that association I’ve gained an appreciation for his inventiveness and ability to see each problem from a different angle. A trait probably picked up from “Old Man” Phast. (How else can you explain Willie’s middle name of Geaux.) The project brought together people from many different technologies. They included Den Heiser, an adhesives expert, who also had a streak of uncontrolled genius running through his work. (Den was the one who applied a slow acting, temperature sensitive adhesive to the seat of a chair. If you sat around for two hours or more, you were “stuck to your job”.) Willie and Den got to talking at the spring picnic, about the time that Willie was working on a new Solo car. I joined them for a short time in a discussion of the need for traction. The conversation lasted of and on until burgers were served after 5. Willie showed up several times the following week at Den’s office, two doors down from mine. Their meetings may not have been related to the project. Well I can’t really say that, we did have a need for a coating that would reduce the slip between product and machine whenever the temperature went above 120 F. A problem with the time dependency of the amount of “tack” had not yet been solved. 22
At about this time I had built several “garage dollies” to help move engines, transmissions and the occasional wheelless car around my garage. Willie had suggested several of the design features. About a week ago, I get a call from Willie asking if he can borrow the dollies. I said sure and that I could deliver, that the wife was out to a club meeting and some parts had arrived at the “racer’s supply” shop near where he lived. When I arrived, Willie was puttering around the car in the shop half of his garage. After setting the timing, adjusting the fuel mixture, setting caster and camber, etc. he had taken the car out for a trial run. When Jen went out for a shopping trip to the mall, he mounted the “race” rubber and drove around the neighborhood. Everything was going as planned until he tried to move it before closing the garage up for the night. The car wouldn’t move, as if the brakes had locked up. We got the dollies out and under the car, but couldn’t get the tires off of the floor. They were stuck! After a beer, he admitted that part of the test run had been to evaluate a tire treatment provided by Den. Braking, acceleration and cornering all seemed to be improved. As he pulled back into the
garage he had gotten a 45-minute phone call from his sister, Betty. About that time he remembered Den’s admonitions to get the tires up off of the pavement until they had cooled. Water, pry bars, even an attempt to drive a thin steel plate between the tire and floor wouldn’t free them from their grip on the floor. We got the car jacked up enough to take the weight off of the tires, dollies and blocks in place. Willie then unbolted the wheels and let the air out of the tires. After several tries we were able to pull them over at a great enough angle that the car could be rolled out into the driveway on the dollies. We returned the tires to an upright position, placed boxes, etc. between them and threw a car cover over it all. Willie thought that Jen might take it to be a FF he was storing for one of the guys. The Solo car was left in the driveway with the “street rubber” bolted up. Note: After running a thin hacksaw blade between the tire and the garage floor Willie was able to get to the remaining adhesive. The remaining material was then dissolved using a nonOSHA approved solvent, a blow torch and finishing up with “hard” solvent (emery paper for those who want to know). LKE
