REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive Some days are tougher than others, for all of God’s creatures. Why do I mention that? Marsha and I live in the 19th Ward of the city across the Genesee from the University of Rochester. This area has been known to have bats and bats have gotten into our house a few times. It has happened about a dozen times the 26 years we have lived here. The problem is that it has happened twice in the past two weeks. There is one good thing is that I have become pretty good at getting them out of the house, the last one I was able to bat down and then grab it with my gloved hand and throw it out the window. I’m hoping that I found out how they are getting in the house and fixed it today, Marsha is really hoping that I found the spot they are getting in. If you want to hear any of the stories I can tell you that go along with our bats, ask at the next meeting. The Northeast Division Solo championships were the last weekend of July. I thought the event went great, plenty of entries, four runs each day and we were finished early both days. The welcome party Friday night was good as was the free lunch. My new car ran great, just couldn’t find the point where I was pushing the car enough, but not too much. I also found that when I had my left foot over the brake pedal instead of the clutch and went to shift to 2nd gear, not only does the car stop but it doesn’t go into gear well. There were a lot of people from all over the division that worked to put the event together and as much as I would like; I can’t name them all, but thanks for putting on a great event. 4
As many of you know we changed our online race registration this year and this has lead to changes in the registration process at the track. The Glen Region’s July Sprints was the first event at Watkins Glen where we didn’t use folders in registration. It went pretty smoothly and I think it made registration a little faster. At the Pocono Double National they also went without folders with a twist, they had the binders divided up by the alphabet. The huge advantage that they have at Pocono is that everyone can get into the track prior to registration being open. This way the drivers are able to get unloaded and don’t seem to be in the big hurry that you see at WGI. Friday afternoon I did some sight seeing around the track and the bumps at the bus stop are not something I would want to drive my solo car across. I saw several cars catch some air and found themselves turned a little sideways. Our October meeting is going to be a special meeting that you won’t want to miss. We are going to have a picnic and some story telling by some long time drivers (not necessarily old). It’s amazing how things have changed in motorsports so check out the flyer elsewhere in Top End and come out. It is with a sad heart that we found out that Ken Buchel died on August 9th. Ken was injured at the Glen Double National Race. Marsha and I had gone to Strong Memorial Hospital and meet the family a couple of days after the race. I’m sure that the family appreciates everything that was done by everyone during their long stay in Rochester. I would like to thank Chris De Minco for all of his efforts for the Buchel family. There is a notice elsewhere in Top End if you would like to help the family out. Until next month… Mike
Meeting Minutes Finger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes August 2, 2011 Location: Burgundy Basin Inn, 1361 Marsh Road, Pittsford, New York 14534 Regional Executive Mike Toombs called the meeting to order at 8:12 p.m. The following is arranged by topic and is not in chronological order. The August issue of Top End has not been delivered to most members. (The reasons for late delivery will be looked into. Any changes in the schedule required for a timely delivery will be presented to the board of directors. Ed.) Activities An “Old Timer’s” meeting is being planned for the September meeting. We are hoping for lots of bench racing from racers, rallyist, soloists and ? (This meeting has been moved to October. Ed.)
PROVIDING THE RACING COMMUNITY WITH INSURANCE AND DISABILITY INCOME FOR OVER 40 YEARS. September 2011
Membership Report – Mike Brunner Mike reported that the region currently has 444. That is down two from July. Nineteen members attended the Solo and general membership meetings. John Walsh reported on the discussion being held by the national planning committee on membership retention. If a member stays for three years that person will likely be a long-term member. Most of those who drop out do so before the three years. Ideas, suggestions, etc. on how to retain those members should be passed along to John. It was noted that people who enter the Solo series as a group tend to stay and compete as a group. Members who do not enter as a member of a group are more likely to quit. Old Business The nominating committee for the 2012 region’s board of directors is Dave Avery, Lew Giesy, Lynn Randall, Alan Smith and Rich Smith. Volunteers for nominations to the board positions are needed. Contact any member of the nominating committee. Race Report A brick has been purchased honoring George Morris and will be dedicated on Sept. 9. Transponder sales are going well. We have six remaining; three that appear to be in good working order and three that have various problems. Glen National Race The double national at Watkins Glen was reviewed at the July meeting. (Finger Lakes member results are in the August issue of Top End. Ed.) Thanks and a round of applause to Bob Swinehart for the excellent job on the program. Financial activity is not complete on the race, but we will have a positive cash flow. Fun One – Russell Jaslow Sanction numbers have been received. Registration will be open on MotorsportReg.com within a few days.
2011 September
The supplemental regulation will be posted on the website within the week. Westward Ho! The board has approved scheduling Westward Ho! for June of 2012. Lew Giesy has accepted the position of chair for this event. Possible support series are being investigated. Rally Report Alan Smith is arranging for the end of year Rally Party and visit from Santa. Probable date and location is the second Friday in December at Cheap Charlie’s in Bloomfield. The 2012 Winter Rally Series is tentatively scheduled for every other Saturday from January 7 through March 3. The region’s year-end party and the Wellsboro Winter Rally may impact that schedule. The March event may feature more paved roads than typical. Summer RoadRally The remaining rally in the summer series will be a social event on Oct. 16. Rick Barnes is rallymaster for that event. A flyer will be available soon. RallyCross The July 23 RallyCross was cancelled because there were only two entries. Solo Report – Brian Buchman There have been two events since the July meeting. The July 17 Solo at the Seneca Army Depot (SeAD) had 81 entries. The other was the Northeast Division Divisional Solo on July 30 and 31 at SeAD with about 130 entries. Tina Reeves and Kathy Barnes chaired the event for NEDiv. This was also the 5th event in the Finger Lakes Region’s 2011 Solo series. The FLR results are still being pulled from the overall results. Upcoming events at SeAD are on August 14 with Marnie Soom as event chair and on August 21 with Marcus Kroll and Dave England. Marcus and Dave are rookie event chairs and will be getting assistance from Jeff Colegrove – course design – and Shaun Hallam – chair.
Mike Toombs reported that the Divisionals went fairly well with a dinner Friday night and smooth operation on Saturday and Sunday. Runs were wrapped up by 3:30 on Saturday and 3:00 on Sunday. Jake Bucknam was second in F Mod. The Street Survival School will be held on August 20 at SeAD. Dave Avery needs instructors, course workers and a few students. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m. on a motion by Mike Brunner, seconded by Lynn Randall. Respectfully submitted, Carl F. Dresie, Secretary Program Motorsports and Social Media – MaryAnne Curry-Shults and Mike Toombs. Social Media includes the various sites available through the internet (computers, cell phones and other mobile devices). It provides communication for different size groups with various connections doing anything from notification to individual interaction. The Finger Lakes Region, SCCA has several paths of social media. www.flr-scca.com is our primary website and is used to tell the world who we are and what we are doing. Race, rally and Solo areas of interest are covered from the basic description to current activities. www.facebook.com/flrscca is used for notification and conversation through both “like” and “group.” www.youtube.com/user/flrscca is a place for the posting of videos made by members. Race laps, rally stages and Solo runs can be posted for viewing by anyone. www.sports.groups.yahoo.com/ group/flrsolo and www.sports.groups. yahoo.com/group/FingerLakesRally have been available for several years. 5
The Solo group is used to notify members and to hold conversations on various topics. The rally group is used for notification of events, primarily the monthly meeting. http://twitter.com/#!/flrscca is a website where up to date announcements of up to 140 characters can be posted, informing followers regarding current events. Bench Racing Local jobs for RIT graduates and girl friends that are into Solo and other SCCA activities would help in membership retention. Jake Bucknam helped on cone pickup at the Divisional Solo. There would have been more than two if the extra people had been able to catch the truck. (Some people walk slower than others.) The difference between a slide and a spin is whether you can get the clutch in early enough to not kill the motor. Getting the clutch in so that you don’t need to restart the engine qualifies as a slide. A spin requires that you reach for the ignition key. It has been reported that the “Winding Stairs” road out of Hammondsport has been paved. That and a car with more power make that hillclimb a possibility for the last winter rally. A left turn “up the hill” while already on a hill can result in late times at a checkpoint. Some people are still asking about the dog show at the Glen double national. It was reported to be near the world’s larges Olympic size pool, not the duck pond. The ability of the EZPass units to be read on the Thruway apparently is dependent upon the vehicle. MG’s can be a special problem, requiring stopping still without reading unit, as reported by Dave Avery. AMB transponders are potted in plastic (epoxy?) to give the units shock resistance, etc. This makes swapping out a battery very difficult.

September 2011
Special Meeting By Fran McAllister
The region is planning a special meeting to honor drivers from the past who have helped to make the Finger Lakes Region and sports car racing what it is today. I am accumulating a list of Finger Lakes Region drivers dating back to 1955 and I am impressed with how long the list is. We have also had some well-known race drivers who have won national championships. Drivers such as Warren Agor, Bill Coykendall, and in more recent years Jerry Alaimo and the Dennis brothers. Expanding the list to team members, race workers, RoadRally and Solo, it becomes even more impressive. The meeting was originally scheduled for September, but the task of contacting everyone and making arrangements have forced it to be moved to October. The Rotary Lodge at Camp Eastman has been reserved for the evening of October 4. A flyer promoting this picnic meeting is printed in the September issue of Top End. More information will be available in the October issue of Top End, both as mailed and on the region’s website at www.flr-scca.com. I am looking for volunteers to help me contact as many of these past members as we can, to personally invite them to this event. You can contact me at (585) 750-4674 or send an e-mail to jenright4@rochester.rr.com. (Updated August 25, 2011. Ed.)

From the Timing Tower
The number of competitors renting battery powered transponders at our races has dropped to the occasional one. Because of the low rental rate, the region’s board of directors voted to sell off the remaining working transponders on a first come-first served basis to the region’s racing competitors.
Ken was self employed and ran Buchel's Auto Body and was a long time racer, first with motorcycles and then sports cars with both EMRA and SCCA. There will be a Celebration of Life for Ken Saturday August 27th at 5:00 PM at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Rd, Stevens Pa. 17578
These AMB transponders were purchased by the region in the early For those of you who would like to 2000’s and were manufactured by AMB make a personal contribution to Ken's up until 2005, at which time a newer family please send cards or donations design was brought out. The batteries directly to Ken's wife Barbara at: on these units are becoming weaker (the working units will hold a charge for three Barbara Buchel or four days). The batteries are not easily 700 South Ridge Rd. replaced. I can provide more information Denver, Pa 17517 if you need. 9

Solo Brian Buchman Solo Chair
Solo Meeting Notes, August 2, 2011, 7:00 p.m. By George Modlin
Attendees ======== Dave Avery, Brian Buchman, Chris Bucknam, Jake Bucknam, Ed Jeffries, Corey Kuhns, George Modlin, Mike Stutzman and Mike Toombs Topics ===== Course reviews Both August 14 and August 21 course maps were reviewed, August 21 at start of meeting, and August 14 at end of meeting. Both courses are in "draft" stage with changes still being made. Speed, safety, concrete transition and start interval were topics discussed for both. Cory Kuhns is doing the August 14 event. He did say that he doesn't want to do another "speed maintenance" type of course. Course setup will be early (8 a.m.?) on Saturday. The second August event has lots of contributors. Marcus Kroll and Dave England (former CS Boxster, now Porsche 924S co-drivers) are the event chairs. Shaun Hallam is lending a hand in a mentoring role. Jeff Colegrove is the course designer with a course layout based very loosely on the Divisionals Sunday course. The feature element of this layout is a long combination of sweeping rights out of the "P" all the way back around to the runway center. (Side note: in my car this took a full seven seconds at between 43 and 52 mph peaking at 1.00g.) Split event with course reversal The basic idea is that since lower
2011 September
attendance results in us doing six run events, why not do three runs with the course in one direction, and then three in the reverse direction. There were several reasons why this idea was rejected. A.) It would take too long to swap mid-event while ensuring safety. B.) There would be some additional work for timing. C.) It would dramatically change the feel of the event. The idea was shelved for now. Work/run order The feedback that was received from this experiment was clear. It won't be tried again. Balancing run groups Most of the meeting was spent discussing this topic. It was rather unstructured and took several side paths. A lot of time was spent working through the idea that Ed presented that the biggest reason for the imbalance between groups is the need to keep all of the Novices together in one run group. It should be noted that the Novice Chief wasn't at the meeting; so all topics related to the Novices will still need to go through him. How to split the Novices into multiple groups was discussed. It was thought that two groups of Novices is the right number of groups for the number of Novices that we have been seeing this year (one is too few, three is too many). One idea was that it might be possible to separate, or at least identify Novices depending on experience. This would help dealing with having too many green Novices working course at the same time.
Another idea was to have Novice buddies that mentor Novices through their day. A sidetrack discussion was about having the right number of Novices. In other words, should the Novice program focus on just the newest Novices that need the most help, or should the Novice program handle everyone that isn't ready to compete in open classes. This discussion should be handled outside of the run group balance issue, and we ďŹ nally got back on track. Even though the Novice distribution was pointed to as the primary issue with worker balancing across groups, there were other issues discussed. One of them is that not everyone is reporting and working with the right groups. This may have been a problem at the last event since we did work/run rather than the normal run/work. Another discussion point to help with worker balance is the number of exempt workers. It may be possible to reduce the number of exempt workers in multiple areas and create a larger worker pool. There is also some variability from event to event depending on who shows up that day. It seems that we are most exposed when we are near the crossover point between doing two and three run groups. An observation is that we may be operating as if the attendance was greater than we are currently experiencing.

Rally Tom Langdon Interim RoadRally Chair
Rally Meeting Notes
July 19, 2011 96 Church Street, Victor, NY The following report is grouped by subject and may not be in chronological order. The follow six RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon and Alan Smith. Rally interest representation is needed on the region’s nominating committee and on the board of directors. Rally Meetings The August meeting will be held on August 9 as originally scheduled. Rick’s plans have changed. Be sure to check http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/ group/FingerLakesRally/ for any changes. The September general membership has been moved to the 13th, as a result, the September rally meeting has been moved to Sept 20. Summer Rallies The last of the summer social rallies is scheduled for October 16. A flyer will be printed in the September and October issues of Top End and on the website. Winter Rally Series The training rally needs to be scheduled closer to the start of the start of the winter series. Rallymaster and format/length need to be defined. Eric Hobron is making several new checkpoint signs. Five events are wanted for the winter rally series. Tentative dates are: Jan. 7, Jan. 21, Feb. 4, Feb. 18 and March 3. Possible conflicts are the Finger Lakes Region’s Year End Party and the Wellsboro Winter Rally. Rallymasters need to be recruited for the series. Year End Party Alan Smith will contact Cheap Charlie’s in Bloomfield about holding the Rally Year End Party there. The first choice date is the second Friday of December. Miscellaneous Discussions Tubular meat products, chips, dips, potables, etc. were enjoyed prior to getting down to serious (?) business. The food, discussion and meeting were all enjoyed outside around the picnic table. This may be repeated, watch for a notice on the groups Yahoo site, (sports.groups.yahoo.com/ group/FingerLakesRally/).

Although a GPS may not be totally accurate, it can be useful in navigating for both competitor and worker. Another benefit is moving serious competitors out of stock class into limited. “Winding Stairs” outside of Hammondsport is reported to have been paved. Use of paved roads may be advisable for the March 3 rally, this to avoid the soft, muddy roads frequently seen in the spring. It was noted that some roads driven in the summer seem familiar from the winter series. Getting to others is a question of “how did we get THERE?” The “Old Driver’s/Long Term Member” meeting will be held at the October general membership meeting. An 1893 Columbian Exposition commemorative fifty-cent coin has an estimated value of $80 on the collector’s market, fifty cents at the local bar. How do these and other collector coins get into the currency steam? Ride height on several motorcycles can lead to interesting contortions when coming to a stop. Six-ounce lean steak burritos are available at Whole Foods in Portland, Maine. Course following, staying on the road and other rally anecdotes were shared. They are not repeated here to protect the storytellers. It was noted that enjoying the humor of a competitor in front of a team, missing a turn, could lead to that team also missing the turn. The remainder of the hour and a half time was spent discussing things ranging from Subaru rust problems, to fun driving roads, to hair, to bicycles, to trucks/pickups, to pastors and more. Minimum reference to growing up in Kansas or working on submarines (how many subs are there in Kansas?).
August 9, 2011 96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not be in chronological order. The follow five RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin and Tony Zanni. Rally interest representation is needed on the region’s board of directors. Rally Meetings The September general membership has been moved to the 13th, as a result, the September rally meeting has been moved to Sept 20. Changes for this and other meetings will be given on http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ FingerLakesRally/. RallyCross Series The July 23 event was cancelled; the next scheduled events are August 27 and September 24. Tony Zanni will contact Elizabeth Thiel regarding the process used for the approved purchase of helmets. The new helmets go to Solo and the older ones used for RallyCross.
Ben Gilmore proposed that the November event be run on his property. That would require that the last two events be moved to a week earlier. The current Finger Lakes Region calendar for the rest of 2011 will be sent to those at the meeting. (Post meeting -The site will not be available because the crops will not be harvested in time. Ed.) Summer Rally Series The last of the summer social rallies is scheduled for October 16. A flyer will be prepared for Top End and the website: www.flr-scca.com. Winter Rally Series Rallymaster, date and format/length need to be defined for a training rally. This event is a noncompetitive event used to teach new rallyists and to clear out the cobwebs for the rest. Five events are being planned for the winter rally series. Tentative dates are: Jan. 7, Jan. 21, Feb. 4, Feb. 18 and March 3. Dates may change to avoid conflict with the Finger Lakes Region’s Year End Party and the Wellsboro Winter Rally. Gary Thomas will be rallymaster for the event following Alan Smith’s rally. The last event could be primarily on paved roads in Wayne County. Possible conflicts are the Finger Lakes Region’s Year End Party and the Wellsboro Winter Rally. Additional rallymasters are needed. Miscellaneous Discussions The August issue of Top End was late getting through the system that may have led to confusion regarding the date of the August rally meeting. Meeting notices are printed in Top End, can be found on the website at www.flr-scca.com and are announced on the rally yahoo site, http://sports. groups.yahoo.com/group/FingerLakesRally/. The Toyota Celica featured on the front cover and the page nine article still has a dead transmission. The use of Trakker at STPR was discussed, both the requirements and the high number of “non-finishers” was discussed. If a competitor is time barred, Trakker may pass that team. The current STPR operating procedure should be reviewed to verify the actions taken between the last competitor and the course-opening car. The Honda Civic “Kit-car” of Tony and Rich should be ready to run the upcoming winter series. Randy Zimmer’s Miata bodied, tube frame RallyCross car was described. A problem with an evening/night RallyCross event is the ability to find misplaced cones. (Would the LED flashlights survive?) Trees are not an effective sound barrier. Kancamagus Highway (SR 112) through the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire is an interesting drive except during leaf viewing season. Rumble strips along the edge of the road can be a valuable driving aid during periods of reduced vision. Orange paint can be used to define hazards in the road, such as rocks. The options for mounting a rally sending units were discussed and where to mount them to prevent damage. JBWeld is good for mounting the magnets.
