REPort Charlie Tanck Regional Executive
As we start the New Year the region has many things going on. The Race and Solo programs are done for the year and starting to plan for 2014. The Rally and RallyCross programs are underway and continuing into the coming months. We have our annual awards banquet coming up January 25th at the River’s Edge Party House and hope to see many of you there. We are also moving our membership meeting to the Fireside Grill and Sports Bar, 3939 East Henrietta Rd., Henrietta, NY 14467. We should thank Murph’s in Irondequoit for hosting us the past 2 years. The room we were using got to be too small for the membership meetings and the games in the room were a bit disruptive at times. The food was good and the staff friendly but a larger venue was needed. My tenure with the board has taught me a few things. First is that the year goes by very fast and with only 12 board meetings we have to be organized and 4
decisive. Second, there are a myriad of opinions on any subject within the board and among the region members. Lastly we are an organization of volunteers and we need to support peoples’ efforts and give them clear direction. More things come to mind but that’s for another time. I should give you a little background about myself. I am a retired engineer. I worked for GM and Delphi Automotive for 34 years. For the most part I enjoyed my various jobs. Being an engineer I found that you had to continue to learn things on an ongoing basis or you quickly become obsolete. Relative to automotive engineering, I currently feel obsolete. Engineers are cursed. They want to know why things happen and look for logic that is not always evident and sometimes does not exist. I don’t think you’ll find many engineers that go into politics. I rejoined the SCCA in 2007, after a long absence. My primary interest has been Club Racing. I know some of you are concerned about a single focus, but I have done rallies and solos (long enough ago that they were called gymkhanas) and enjoyed both. I feel a bit out of my element taking on the Regional Executive position but will give it my best shot. We have to do a better job promoting our events. What makes them unique? How do we use social media, the newspaper, and our website? What do we want people to know about the region? Seasons in the Northeast are short. On any weekend competitors can pick and choose where they want to participate. These things will be important if we want to grow. How will we adapt for the future? Expenses at Watkins Glen have gone up. How do we put on an event that produces some revenues but doesn’t price us out of the market or compromise quality? Venues for a SOLO event are hard to find. Is there a place other than RIT? How do we get members to be more active in the region? We had a tough time filling the board of directors’ slate, what happens when we can’t?
PROVIDING THE RACING COMMUNITY WITH INSURANCE AND DISABILITY INCOME FOR OVER 40 YEARS.
I hope that my future articles will have answers to some of the questions that were posed. Change is inevitable. Not everyone will be happy as we move forward. We have a solid foundation due to the work of previous boards and Mike Tombs’ long term commitment to the region. Feel free to attend board meetings and offer suggestions and ideas. But also be willing to work on their implementation. The region needs your support. Charlie

2014 Rules Changes Approved at SCCA Board Meeting
TOPEKA, Kan. (December 9, 2013) – Sports Car Club of America’s Board of Directors voted to approve rules changes proposed by the Club Racing Board, effective 1/1/14. Recommended for approval in the December 2013 Fastrack® News (http:// scca.cdn.racersites.com/prod/assets/13fastrack-dec-club.pdf, beginning on page 11), each item passed unanimously. Additionally, the Board requested that the CRB consider permitting Improved Touring-spec cars into the
GT category, as it approved for the Production category via request letter #12279.
Kansas Region SCCA – The First To Unveil New Region Website Template
TOPEKA, Kan. (November 21, 2013) – The Kansas Region SCCA today unveiled the new look KSSCCA.org website, becoming the first Region to take advantage of SCCA’s new Region Website Template. The new program allows participating regions to build a working, functional website in less than an hour, with support from the SCCA National Office, for a nominal fee.
Each website, following a common template, features customized information about the Region, but also news and information about the SCCA that is populated as it is updated on SCCA.com. The result is a website that remains fresh for the Region, who is most often using a volunteer to provide content, with little necessary upkeep. “The website is an opportunity for the local Region to both communicate with existing members and greet potential new members, but it’s not always easy to do with a volunteer staff,” Rick Myers, SCCA Region Services Manager, said. “Under the new format, a Region website will have relevant information handy, a crisp look, and stay refreshed with little effort on the Region’s part. We applaud the Kansas Region for getting its site up and running, as well as the Alaska Region and Las Vegas Region, which are also in the works.” Regions can get more information on the available Region Websites by contacting Rick Myers, SCCA Region Services Manager.

We will provide assistance for a first time rallymaster. Tom has made a few minor updates to the series general instructions. They will be posted on the website. Review the need to work as part of the series points. Worker incentives need to be reviewed. Possibly an endof-session recognition. The artwork for the 2013 series will be updated for 2014. Charlie Tanck will be invited to “ride-along” on a winter rally. RallyCross November results have been sent to Top End. October results have not been sent. The next event is scheduled for Dec. 14. December 10, 2013 96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order. The following eight RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon, Alan Smith, Jerry Trippe and Tony Zanni. General Rally Sponsorship packages were discussed. Interest has been expressed for both the RallyCross and Winter Rally Series’. Size and number of ads in the Top End, where the name and logo are used, what the sponsorship covers and rates for the various packages were discussed. Depending on ad timing, size could be ¼ or ½ page. Sponsor ID could be on the trophies, fliers and rally paperwork. RallyCross sponsorship could include lunch, etc. Cost of trophies, etc. could be split between the sponsors and the club. A SCCA member discount is also a possibility. The reach of ads, etc. needs to be part of selling the packages. An 9
advitorial could be offered. Use of the Finger Lakes Region’s website was discussed. 2014 Winter Rally Series Equipment needs for the Winter Rally Series were described for Jerry T’s information. They include: Good snow tires, Good long tow rope, Triangles or flares, A set of highlighters – not pink or yellow if using a red “head light”, Good interior lights – not the car lights but a book light or “head light,” Calculator, A navigator that is good at math, a GPS unit. An area map can be useful if you go off course. Check point procedures were reviewed. A beginner rally team should have a goal of staying on course. On time can be attempted with practice. Tony has put together a flyer for the series. Information is need for the events after the Ithaca rally. Possibilities for the Feb. 1 rally were discussed. If the rally cannot be organized by Feb. 1 it could be run March 22. Carl will send Tony several routes to use as a base. Tony would need an assistant to set up a rally. Areas would be east or south from Canandaigua. Event flyers need to be on the Finger Lakes Region website and Facebook.
RallyCross The next RallyCross events are Dec. 14 and Jan. 11. STPR® The Waste Management Winter Rally running Feb. 15 has a possible five entries at this time. Miscellaneous Discussions Snow caused some members to arrive later than usual. Alan turned in a 60 minute TA request. A Mini Clubman rides better on the highway than the coupes, reported by Tom after driving the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire. Tim O’Niel’s rally school had a 30% off “Black Friday” special. Learning the car is a big part of the novice becoming faster. Left wheel braking equals left foot braking. NYSDOT plows can effectively block a road, especially with the help of their wings, but they can be passed in an emergency by an EVO Trader Joe’s has GOOD cookies.
