REPort Charlie Tanck Regional Executive
We now have a date for our summer picnic. It will be August 23 at the Scottsville Fire Hall, 385 ScottsvilleMumford Rd. For the past 3 years this has been deemed our Old Timers picnic. As I began writing, I thought of the discussions that have taken place about this picnic and what we were trying to do. We are trying to have an outing that would bring our members together to socialize. Every competitive group seems to have its’ own events. This one was geared toward Club Racing. Why don’t we keep it simple and call it the Finger Lakes Region Summer Picnic. A lot would remain the same. We would like to have a car show, but not limited to cars. Bring anything that interests you, Muscle cars, Rally cars, Motorcycles, Classic cars, Model airplanes, Bicycles whatever. If anyone is in the Region that is in a band or a DJ please volunteer and help us by bringing music to the event. If we can get a feel for people 4
bringing young children, I’d like the Region to consider a bounce house. Fran McAllister is looking for help planning the event. He would like a co-chair at minimum; it would be great if we could get a representative from the Race, RoadRally, RallyCross, and Solo communities to help with planning and contacting people. In our March meeting I talked about our need to do a better job at the auto show. This is no longer a one person undertaking. It is an opportunity to expose the SCCA to the community. I thought we should get a TV and DVD player for the region. My town had its spring electronics recycling event this past weekend. This made me think that before we purchase these items we should see if anyone in the region was upgrading their TV or DVD player and would be willing to donate their old one to the region. We have a storage facility and an equipment manager so we could keep it there and have a way to make it accessible if someone had an opportunity to talk to a group about the SCCA or if you wanted it at an event. They could also be used at banquets, etc. The last thing I want to touch on is Top End. Carl Dresie puts a lot of work into getting out our monthly publication. He could use some help. The chairman of the various committees should be writing articles for the publication.
PROVIDING THE RACING COMMUNITY WITH INSURANCE AND DISABILITY INCOME FOR OVER 40 YEARS.
Members could write a brief description of things they have participated in. I am mostly involved with Club Racing but am sure many things are going on. We have a new Divisional Race Series, in Solo there is an effort to help regions expand their programs, and RallyCross is gaining popularity. A lot of good things are going on. We need to keep members informed.

National News SCCA names Lisa Noble president and CEO
It is our pleasure to share with you that the SCCA board of directors has overwhelmingly selected Lisa Noble as president and CEO of the Sports Car Club of America. Having served as interim president and CEO since October, Lisa will start immediately and hit the ground running. Our selection of Lisa Noble was the clear choice. Lisa has been involved with SCCA since her teenage years, spanning several decades as a volunteer and driver. Voted to SCCA’s board of directors in 2008, she has held a variety of positions, including chairman of the board in 2013. As a road racer, Lisa has been a fixture in the Formula Vee community for years.

Rally Tom Langdon Interim Rally Chair
Where’s the snow?
Rally Meeting Notes
April 8, 2014 96 Church Street, Victor, NY These notes are grouped by subject and are not in chronological order. The following five RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Tom Langdon and Tony Zanni. General Rally Tony brought up the idea of having the Winter Rally Series award banquet after the end of the series. This would allow recognition of the RoadRally and RallyCross competitors shortly after the season ends. Would this replace or supplement the December party? Input from the rally community is requested. Ben asked if there are any rally subjects that need to be brought to the board. Tom will be presenting a rally budget. 2015 Winter Rally Series A pre-season rally and/or a training rally were discussed. The difficulty is in 8
finding a day that doesn’t conflict with other social activities. Training novices can be done by a post rally “class” and/ or the training rally. Would a sit-down while the rally is being scored help in getting the novices up to speed? This should be announced during the prerally novice school. Requested dates for the series are: Jan. 10, Jan 24, Feb. 7, Feb. 21 and March 7. Getting the dates in early will get them on the national schedule. The use of extra lights was a problem in the 2014 series. The light and speed rules in the general instructions need to be more strongly enforced. The question raised is what are LED light bars equivalent to in terms of extra lights. 2014 Summer Rally Series Lynn Randall and Mike Brunner are conducting a Sunday daytime rally on May 4. Tom needs information to file a sanction request. Several options for summer rallies are possible. Something directed to older or “special” cars is possible. Carl will send the current version of the calendar to Tom, Rick and anyone wanting a current copy. RallyCross RallyCross dates being requested are: May 17, June 1, July 26, August 23, Sept. 27, Oct. 25, Nov. 22, Dec. 13 or 20, Jan. 24 and Feb. 28. The May date will be a Test ‘n Tune and course work day. Miscellaneous Discussions Ben reported on his time in central Europe. He commented that the Italians take on traffic rules is that, “Everything is Optional.” Also, the further south you go in Italy, the worse the drivers. Also, never drive in the third lane as it is the double parking lane. The streets in Monte Carlo are very narrow, so much so that keeping the mirrors on the VW Golf was a concern. Ben does not recommend driving in the Netherlands if you are an enthusiast and may want to push the speed limit. They are very strict on traffic enforcement. They have both speed and average speed cameras. Two
kilometers over will get you a ticket. Part of Ben’s trip included the WRC Monte Carlo rally. Ben and Pam were able to catch a little bit of the rally and service areas. http://www.rally-maps. com has maps, videos and more and covers everything from WRC down to STPR®. Videos include driving the stages of the WRC rallies. Very cool site! An issue of the Official Spectator guide and several freebie guides were passed around showing what WRC puts out for promotional material. The official guide was in both French and English; the others were all in French. The trip from Turin into France was over the mountains with snow. Tire snow chains were required. The first rental car offered was a station wagon of sorts. The search for a smaller car turned up a VW Golf with high mileage and dents, scratches or dings on every corner. That proved a better choice based upon the drivers encountered. Later in the Netherlands and Germany the rental car was a Ford Focus ST-H. (Similar in concept to the Shelby Mustang GT350H.) Capable of 155 mph on the German autobahns. The acceleration in 6th gear was exceptional as was the torque steer. Hella is offering LED driving lights in the shape of previous driving lights. Tom may be looking at a ’05 Subaru Outback with turbo charger and manual transmission. That car would join Alan Smith’s similar car in the list of rally vehicles. It was noted that some styles of Subaru with manual transmissions are hard to find. Rick is considering picking up a “driver” car while in the San Francisco area. He is looking for a low rust high gas mileage car. “It is better to be lucky than handsome.” The requisite wiener dog comment – “The full moon drives one dog crazy.”

Finger Lakes Region SCCA to hold autocross school at RIT Finger Lakes Region SCCA will hold its annual Solo Novice School at Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, June 7. "Solo" is the Sports Car Club of America's brand of autocrossing. It's defined as a driving skill competition, where you and your car negotiate a course laid out in a parking lot and marked with traffic cones. The lowest time wins, and penalty seconds are added to your score for each cone you knock down. It's just one car at a time, so there's little risk of trading paint with other cars. Solo speeds are relatively low, typically second gear for most cars. The turns come up quickly, though, so don't be fooled into thinking Solo is boring. To get a good low time you must be smooth and precise, and quick. The skills you learn in the parking lot will greatly improve your car control, and help make you a safer driver on the street. You'll get personal training with experienced competitors Attending our Novice School is for those who are just starting out in autocross, yet want to learn valuable skills, or who want strategy tips for the quickest way to navigate through a slalom--all this from experienced competitors and in just one day's time. Do you want more hands on time learning about car control? The FLR SCCA Solo Novice school can get you there. We setup a course and everyone gets a baseline run. Throughout the day the drivers will practice various elements with an in-car instructor at different stations like slalom, braking, skid pad/figure eight and mini course. At the end of the day, drivers get another try at the course It's a fun learning experience, plus you get a ton of seat time for much less than most driving schools. The cost for the day is only $75 Pre-register through motorsportsreg. com.
