REPort Mike Toombs Regional Executive
By the time you read this, our big race weekend will have come and gone. The Fun One was put together by Chris DeMinco and Elizabeth Thiel. They put in a lot of time and effort into having the same races that we conduct every year and to do it with less money. Of course we still have the world famous (assuming that you live in a small world) pig roast and T-shirts. I’m writing this the weekend before the race, but I know it will be a successful event. In 1981 when I first heard the term “The Fun One” I wondered how a group of people could put on a race that they knew ahead of time would be fun. I thought that making that type of declaration was a little presumptuous, but silly me, I didn’t know the people putting on the race back then and that they were putting on a fun event. So I went to my first Fun One, I was attending college in Rochester and had some trouble getting my class work done and driving to Watkins Glen. Low and behold the group calling themselves the Finger Lakes Region did know what they were doing when they named the Fun One. So every year we have worked to keep the race meaningful and truly fun. I talked about the election of officers in last month’s column. Unfortunately the nominating committee was having problems getting a slate of candidates together. Of course there are many things that I want to say about people not stepping up to help run the region. I know that there are people out there 4
who have been consumers of what the region puts on every year; and if nothing else they may want to make sure that their activity continues. Okay, back to the election, due to the problems with getting the slate together, the annual meeting and the election of officers is going to be delayed until November.
Meeting Minutes
We had a group of people who drove the 18 hours to compete in the 40th Tire Rack Solo National Championships. Unfortunately not everyone could win, but we do have a national champion, Jeff Colegrove, who just edged out his brother in F Modified. I’m sure there are some stories about the nationals and hopefully someone will take the time to write a first-hand report of their experience.
September 4, 2012
The second annual Old Driver’s picnic was the Tuesday night before the Fun One. This event was a rousing success last year and I hope that we were able to duplicate that again this year. The SCCA National Championship RunOffs® start up the week after the Fun One. This year they are trying to cut down the number of days the competitors are required to be at the track. Hopefully this will make it possible for more drivers to compete. If I’m not mistaken, we unfortunately are not going to have any region drivers competing this year at the RunOffs. Now that the racing and Solo seasons are over we can look forward to the fall RoadRallys, the Winter Rally Series and the continuation of the RallyCross season. Due to scheduling conflicts the first RallyCross event to be held at the Perry-Warsaw airport has been moved to Perry’s Park. It would be great for us to develop another site to give Bruce’s field a little rest. Well I have decided that this column must now come to an end. So until next month… Mike

There will be seven race groups with a 20 minute qualifying session followed by a 25 minute race, using the long course on Saturday and the short course on Sunday. The number of Westward Ho! competitors entering the Fun One is lower than expected. We will again have the popular pig roast Saturday after the racing. Guest will be charged $5 for the pig roast. A “Dust Off The Cobwebs” event is scheduled for Dec. 1. This is a paved and smooth unpaved rally designed to bring the competitors back up to speed on navigating skills and to give new rallyists a chance to learn the skills needed to navigate a tulip style rally. Some of the more experienced competitors may also use this opportunity to try new procedures. Solo Report There will be no more events at Rochester Institute of Technology. The Western New York Solo at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sept. 23 will be added to our out of region events. JOHN GORSLINE TO SHARE 40+ YEARS WORKING WITH MOTORSPORTS' A-LIST By MaryAnne Curry Shults
John Gorsline not only has a passion for racing, but more so for the people involved. For nearly half a decade, The Gorsline Company has provided financial services and insurance to some of the top names in motorsports. And he's got 40+ years of stories to share, which he will do on Tuesday evening, October 2, when he is the guest speaker at the monthly membership meeting of Finger Lakes Region of the Sports Car Club of America.
Gorsline is founder and chairman of The Gorsline Company, started in 1966. The company has earned an international reputation for its services. It utilizes colleagues throughout the U.S. to provide intimate service to their specialized clientele. "Our depth and breadth of knowledge, expertise, service and experience are unsurpassed in the motorsports industry," according to the company's website. "The Gorsline Company is proud of their long-standing relationships, which are maintained under the strictest of confidences." The Gorsline Company annually presents the Human Performance Institute Scholarship to "a young aspiring driver who consistently displays exceptional talent and a professional respect for motorsports." John Gorsline started the scholarship "as a way to promote the sport and to recognize young future championship drivers." Some

As a young man, Gorsline had diverse career experiences, but when he sold life insurance to renowned local journalist and newspaper icon, Paul Miller, he found his tie-in to motorsports. Miller was the editor and publisher of the Times-Union and Democrat and Chronicle. From 1957 to 1978, he was the president of Gannett and from 1963 to 1977, president of the Associated Press. Gorsline helped Miller's son, Paul (Jr), with his race team and Gorsline has never looked back. Don't miss this opportunity to meet John Gorsline in person, hear his stories, and ask him questions. The FLR-SCCA meeting begins at 8 p.m. at Murph's Irondequoit Pub, 705 Titus Ave. in Rochester. Visit www.flr-scca.com for more information about the Finger Lakes Region, SCCA.
"My passion is the racing people, they absolutely intrigue me," Gorsline said. "I have lots of stories to tell, so there will be some interesting questions of your audience." Not the executive who prefers to sit behind a desk, Gorsline attends about 50 races a year to offer trackside support to drivers he considers not only clients, but also friends窶馬ames familiar to racing enthusiasts such as Earnhardt, Mears, Rahal, Sullivan and Redmond. His agenda includes some of the top events

GLENN H.
MUSEUM H A M M O N D S P O R T, N E W Y O R K
Saturday, November 3, 2012 Start: Tom Wahl’s Restaurant, Avon, N.Y.
Come spend a fall afternoon exploring the natural scenic beauty of the Finger Lakes area of Upstate New York, famous for everything from its lakes to its wineries. We’ll traverse the countryside to the famous Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, a favorite for history buffs. This fun, 60-mile, easy course-following road rally includes tulip diagram instructions with questions to be answered along the way. Rules are based on the SCCA GTA (Game/Tour/Adventure) style.
Registration ...................................... 11 a.m. Drivers’ Meeting .......................... 11:45 a.m. First car out ......................................... Noon
$20 per car with two participants Price includes admission to museum.
Pre-registration required. Visit www.flr-scca.com/rally/2012 Questions? Contact the rallymaster: Marilyn Randall lynnscca@itimem.org, 585-889-1289 (before 9 p.m.)
Dedicated to the memory of pioneer aviator, Glenn Curtiss, the museum contains a priceless collection relating to early aviation and local history. Curtiss began his career as a builder of bicycles, then motorcycles. In 1907 he became the “fastest man on earth” when he attained a speed of 136.4 MPH on his V-8 powered motorcycle. An exact reproduction of this bike is one of several Curtiss motorcycles that are on display. On July 4, 1908, Curtiss gained notoriety of a different kind when he flew his flying machine, the “June Bug”, a distance of over 5000 feet to win the Scientific American Trophy. This was the first pre-announced, public flight in America. A full-sized reproduction of the “June Bug” is one of several historic aircraft on display. Visit www.glennhcurtissmuseum.org/ for further information about both Glenn H. Curtiss as well as the museum.
