As of January 1, the unification of TSAE and FSAE is complete and from all aspects it has been a positive and seamless transition. The reason for this has been the leadership of both organizations. I would like to thank both the FSAE and TSAE Boards for making this a deliberate and well thought out process that will reap rewards to the association community in Florida for many years to come.

The benefits of unifying both organizations are already very easy to see. Membership in FSAE has swelled to well over 900 members and at last count stood at 950. This growth makes us stronger in the resources, education and networking opportunities we can bring to our members. We also get to welcome Sherri Banyas as our Membership and Events Coordinator. Sherri brings not only her seven plus years of experience with TSAE, but also her knowledge of association management. Most importantly, this unification will allow FSAE to offer more programs in 2015 than it has ever offered. Innovation and Creativity A creative culture is a must in any organization! Every association competes to stay ahead of the curve, demonstrate their relevance and to provide value to current and prospective members. What do you do when a member or leader invariably asks, “what’s new” or “what are the latest trends” for their field or industry? The challenge is how best to have a list of new ideas, goods, services and best practices readily available for members.

So what is Innovation? “Innovation is the implementation of a new or significantly improved product, service or process that creates value for business, government or society.” This is the definition found in “Creativity is the Most Crucial’’ www.creativityatwork.com. So how do we create a culture of finding and generating new ideas?

The experts tell us we must motivate. Most people are driven by curiosity and motivation; the desire to make things better. However, “creative” people are different because they apply their mental or physical energy to figuring out a solution and have the tenacity to bring that idea, service or product forward. We need to remember that the willingness to persevere despite setbacks is important. Ben Franklin, the great inventor is a role model of that behavior as he never “gave up” no matter the number of failures.

Can creativity be developed so we have innovations? Yes, according to a study by George Land, creativity is a skill that can be developed and a process that can be managed. Just look to some of the world’s most innovative companies: Apple, Google, Amazon and Uber. Each of them has revolutionized the way a product or service was delivered. Some organizations rebranded to have their product image viewed in another way, such as: • “AARP” - Using the acronym to change their image from older adults to cool aging baby boomers.

• Girl Scouts of America- From traditional troops to developing leaders with flexible options for participation.

• Dental services- From the traditional dental office to the Dental Spa experience.

So what tools do we need to utilize to encourage a creative environment? According to author, Daniel Burrus in “Creativity and Innovation: Your Keys to a Successful Organization” suggests using these ten strategies: 1) Observe real life situations to learn what motivates people 2) Knowledge. Continually expand your knowledge base 3) Defer judgment. Be careful about how you’re perceiving things 4) Visualize new ideas and concepts and how people could use them 5) Incubate. Take a break and do something different so you shift your brain into another place.

6) Experience as much as you can 7) Treat patterns as part of the problem 8) Redefine the problem completely. “When you define the real problem, you can solve it and move on.”

9) Look to see what others are not seeing.

So what exactly is innovation? According to the dictionary, innovation is a new idea, device or method; the act or process of introducing new ideas, devices or methods. Why is innovation so important to the FSAE Foundation, important enough to be our word of the year? Because innovation solves challenges today in a way that positions us to address the unforeseen challenges of tomorrow.

FOur perspectives on Association Management: interviews with four members on Advocacy, diversity, professional development, and young professionals

Shaddrick Haston, ESQ. joined the FL Assisted Living Association (FALA) in April 2014 as their CEO. While Shad has an extensive background in the assisted living field, this is his first time working for – and running – an association.

exist. I’m here to answer their questions and help where I can on industry issues and problems. It’s a different role for me and a new way of relating to the facility owners that are now my members.”

Shad worked for Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (ACHA) for over seven years in their regulatory/compliance and then licensure divisions, enforcing the state’s regulations on the assisted living industry. Now, those providers are his members and his job is to educate and offer best practices to the facilities so that Florida’s seniors receive the best possible care.

Since Shad started with FALA in April, the 2015 Legislative Session is his first full Session representing FALA members.

His office is already preparing bills and position papers to best serve Florida’s Seniors. “Regulation is important – and it’s needed,” Shad added. “I see my role with FALA as seeking a balance between ‘knee-jerk’ reactions to the industry which tend to over-correct issues, and regulations that are intended to truly protect the health, safety and welfare of residents. As the Assisted Living Unit Manager for the Agency for Health Care Administration, I got a phone call from a facility that I was very close to shutting down. They invited me to visit the facility and see for myself what happened there. What I saw was how intimately the

decisions and policies made in Tallahassee affect the lives of Seniors every day. Over my career, I’ve visited over 120 facilities, over 40 since joining FALA, and I am trying to make sure I fully understand what matters most to our members and how I can help them achieve their goals through advocacy.”

Members of FALA are the owners/operators or the assisted living facilities. However, Shad sees the role of the association as there to serve all facility employees. “Most of the facility employees are what we call ‘care givers,’ not nurses,” he continued. “We wanted to create programs that help our members help their staff. We partnered with Rasmussen College to offer employees college education at a discounted rate. This year that offer is extended to staff family members as well. Whether they’re going to school for nursing or any degree, that program is there to help them succeed – and help our members build and retain quality staff.”

“I’m young, and so people may have pre-conceived notions about me until they understand my background,” Shad continued. “I make sure our members see the vision I have for this organization and how we plan to achieve the goals that will best help our association and our members prosper and fulfill our mission.”

Shad graduated from law school and had always planned to be an attorney. When he was approached about leaving the Law Offices of Robert Wesley in Orlando to work for ACHA, he wasn’t sure of the direction his career was going to take. But he took a chance and never regretted it. “You never know where opportunities will lead you,” Shad said.

“I always thought about career advancement in financial terms – and while that’s important, the knowledge and experience you can gain can really catapult your career in a direction you never imagined. My advice to young professionals: embrace the opportunities that come.”

I still go to campuses now and tell my story to get other college staff involved and help them grow in their careers.

Marsha kiner: Diversity

Marsha Kiner considers herself living proof of what her association can do for its members professionally. She started this path as a member of the Association of FL Colleges, “at a remote location where no one outside of the people working with her knew her name,” and rose through the ranks of leadership to serve the entire state on the Board of Directors and then as the association’s Associate Executive Director for the past 8 years.

“It was eye-opening to go from a volunteer leader to staff of the organization,” Marsha said. “I had no idea how hard staff worked. And since I came from the ranks, I take things really personally and want our events to be perfect. I know how important they were for me, and I want them to give that same experience to everyone else.”

Marsha’s members are the employees at colleges in Florida – and everyone, from the president to the janitor can get involved. “When I plan a meeting, it’s for that person that may have never been to a conference or stayed in this level of hotel. I want our events to be fun, but also foster and develop relationships among members. I see my role as not just bringing people together, but connecting them.”

The association has changed in Marsha’s tenure. They’ve used technology to engage younger members as well as actively recruited and encouraged diversity in leadership.

“When I was hired, I was the first black professional to work for the association. That was huge for me. I love this

“I also went out of my way to recruit members to run for office and our Board is more diverse than it’s ever been before,” Marsha added. “We’ve had our first African American female president and second African American male. People of all colors and creeds now come to me to find out how to advance in leadership instead of me seeking them out.”

Marsha’s advice to encourage diversity: “Organizations have to give more than lip service. You have to seek out specific people for leadership at the committee and board level.

Your leadership needs to mimic your membership makeup.

I can tell you – it’s tough being the only one. It matters when I walk in a room and see someone that looks like me.

The same way it would matter if I was the only woman in a room full of men. Achieving diversity takes baby steps and being aware of the makeup of your staff, your board and your whole organization is the first one.”

Volunteering has always been part of Marsha’s life and she’s experienced the benefits of giving back. Working on committees and organizing events has given her professional skills, no matter what her role or job title.

“Building professional relationships and having colleagues you can count on is crucial,” Marsha said. “I know that someone will respond when I reach out, and they know they can count on me. A network equals relationships.

This is what I want to create for our members – both in my organization and in FSAE. When you reach out, and when you volunteer – it blesses you. It blesses you with the skills you are able to develop and you are blessed by the people you are able to meet along the way.”

“We’re always telling our members to take advantage of what our associations offer. I also point the finger at myself and ask – what can I do to better myself?

How can I grow? publication and marketing staff. Some team members may work for multiple associations, some may be assigned to just one – depending on client needs and scope of work.

“We’re able to share best practices among our staff for what works, and what doesn’t work, for the clients we manage,” Rachel added. “The nice thing is that you never have to go too far to find someone with experience on a particular issue. FSAE does the same thing for me – I get different perspectives and ideas outside of our office and a larger pool of people to learn from.”

Professional Development Rachel Luoma, MS, CAE had never heard of associations until a friend introduced her to Bennett Napier, MS, CAE, President of Partners in Association Management, an association management company (AMC) in Tallahassee.

Nine years later, she’s worked her way up from an entrylevel job to a Chief Staff Executive and a Vice President of the company managing three associations. Her secret for career advancement: taking advantage of professional development opportunities.

Starting her association career with an AMC, Rachel was able to work in almost every department and gain experience in membership, events, marketing, certifications, and board management. “I was lucky to have the opportunity to grow within the company,” Rachel said. “Partners has always been incredibly supportive of professional development both outside the office through organizations like FSAE and internally with crosstraining opportunities. I’ve been able to get my feet wet in most areas of association management and moved up from Member Services to Director of Operations where I managed several departments, to Chief Staff Executive (CSE) in 2011 running three national associations to my Vice President role today.”

Rachel explained that AMCs operate much like a traditional captive association. Each association has a client team that consists of a Chief Staff Executive, program manager(s) and other specialists that includes events, membership,

I was selling membership, but only telling people about the tangible benefits we offered. After FSAE, I could explain to our members and prospects why they should engage and get involved with other members in their industry. It’s about meeting and learning from other people and being part of something.”

Rachel has continued to incorporate professional development into her life. She attends meetings, reads articles, watches webinars and earned her CAE in May 2014. “We’re always telling our members to take advantage of what our associations offer. I also point the finger at myself and ask – what can I do to better myself? How can I grow? What can I learn to do the best job I can do for the associations I serve, my company and myself?”

When asked about challenges she’s faced along her journey, Rachel shared, “Being young can be its own challenge.

There are times that I might be 10-20 years younger than most people in the room and I know I have to prove myself – that I belong at the table too, and that can be daunting at times. I think this is one of the barriers to getting young professionals more involved. I have talked to many people and they say that they aren’t a Chief Staff Executive so they don’t join FSAE. I try to explain to them that it isn’t about where you are in your career, but where you want to go.

Everyone has to earn the respect of their peers, no matter where you are in life.”

ryan tucholski, CAE Young Professionals

Ryan Tucholski, CAE started his career working for the REALTORS® Multiple Listing Service in Toledo, OH. During the real estate boom he was hired as Director of MLS Operations – a subsidiary company of the Toledo Board of Realtors. This was his start in both the association world and the Realtor Association business, where he’s served as CEO for three REALTOR® Associations across the country.

He has also made his mark with the National Association of Realtors starting the Young Professionals program serving almost 700 association executives.

Attending a NAR Executives meeting in 2006, Ryan found himself one of the youngest people in the room. Knowing he wasn’t alone, Ryan helped develop a Young Professionals workgroup and became the founder of NARs Young Professionals network nationwide for association executives.

He’s taken this model to help Realtor Associations and other non-profits start their own Young Professionals programs as a consultant, and now first hand as the CEO of West Volusia’s REALTORS® Association.

“Most organizations recognize the need to include Young Professionals, they just aren’t sure how to get started,” Ryan said. “I was able to create a basic template and work with associations to implement successful programs in their memberships. Here in Volusia County, I’ve taken the program I used as a consultant to create a Young Professionals program first hand.”

Ryan identified key members that he appointed to an

“Members have to take ownership of the process,” Ryan continued. “Young Professionals especially aren’t going to participate or do something just because you tell them it will be good for them. Staff worked closely with the advisory group to develop not only an understanding of the organization as a whole, but also the young professional’s role there. We then created a strategic plan for young professionals – a wish list of programs and services they’d like to see and also a reality list of what we’re able to do right now to build interest and momentum. Part of my role in the program’s creation is to help define what success looks like. If we plan a young professional’s event and only 10 people attend – that’s successful. It’s got to start and build momentum. It’s my job to help them see that 100 people on the first try may not be realistic and that’s ok.”

The Young Professionals Advisory Board became a Young Professionals Committee for Ryan’s association. They set their own goals, create programs and actively recruit new members to participate. “They’re in charge of their own destiny,” Ryan added. “I knew who the pioneers would be, gave them the tools and let them grow it. Now young professionals are taking leadership roles in the association and on other committees. This has created a huge opportunity for members and growth potential for the organization. It’s doing exactly what it was intended to do.”

Ryan’s young professionals group is now the most active and productive committee within his association.

Ryan’s advice for young professionals: “It’s critical to make connections with other association executives – both young and seasoned. Right now, young professionals are often bringing the waves of change, and that can be hard for both sides of the generational spectrum. It’s important to learn how to handle that change and successfully integrate it into the workplace. Both for young professionals now and for when they’re the ones hiring the next wave. We all have something to learn from each other, and that’s the most important thing to remember.” t

Same-Sex marraige in Florida: An Update

Effective January 6, 2015, same-sex marriage became lawful in Florida.

Slanker On December 19, 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to extend the postponement of the implementation of relief provided for in the decision of United States District Court Judge Robert Hinkle for the Northern District of Florida holding that the Florida Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. Judge Hinkle delayed the implementation of the majority of the relief provided in his order until January 5, 2015, so that the parties could appeal the decision to higher courts. Florida’s Attorney General, Pam Bondi, requested that the U.S. Supreme Court and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, Georgia extend the date of the stay, but both courts declined to do so.

An appeal is pending with the Eleventh Circuit as Florida became the thirty-sixth state to legally recognize samesex marriage when the district court’s stay expired in early January.

Most federal judges and appeals courts have ruled against state same-sex marriage bans. As a result, same-sex marriages are occurring in about three dozen states. Like many other judges and appellate courts, Judge Hinkle ruled that Florida’s same-sex marriage ban violates the United States Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection.

The recent decision by the Supreme Court does not resolve the larger legal battles still brewing over same-sex marriage in Florida. Oral arguments before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals in the State of Florida’s appeal of Judge Hinkle’s decision are likely to commence early this year.

In any event, Florida continues to move closer to allowing same-sex marriages. Now is the time to revisit your employment benefits and other policies that may be dependent on the definition of marriage in Florida and make decisions regarding the appropriateness of those policies in light of the status of same-sex marriage in Florida.

Executive Member News Lonny Powell Elected to Two Leadership Positions in Marion County Organizations Lonny T. Powell, Chief Executive Officer of the Ocala-based Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association, has been elected to board-of-director leadership positions with two of the most recognizable organizations within the Marion County equine and business communities: Chairman of the Florida Horse Park Board of Directors and Board Member for the Chamber and Economic Partnership of Ocala and Marion County.

The two Vice Presidents are Rachel Luoma, MS, CAE and John Ricco, MPA, CAE. Both are current employees of the firm. The promotion to the Vice President roles stems from continued growth of the company through the acquisition of new clients and through the creation of their new consulting division, Partners Strategic Solutions.

The attendees loved the venue and I received an overwhelmingly positive response plus several RFPs. South Seas is no stranger to hosting FSAE. In 2000 we hosted the Annual Conference Welcome Reception and people are still talking about it when I see them today. We were very excited to have FSAE CEOs return in 2014 to see the changes and updates we’ve made to the property.

I’ve been a member of FSAE for 15 years and I know that the success I’ve had in the association market is because of the relationships I’ve built from my involvement with the organization. I attend as many lunches and conferences as I can, and I’ve been active on the Associate Advisory Committee for several years. The relationships I’ve formed with executive members translates into business for my resort. I can directly attribute over $161,000 in booked business since January 2014 from my relationships with other FSAE members.

After the CEO Retreat, we contacted attendees to ask them what we could do to better serve our association clients.

Their responses resulted in the FSAE Partner Perks Program – launched at the TSAE/FSAE Education Day last October and now available to all FSAE members. Perks include no resort fees, complimentary reception, free internet in guest and meeting rooms and more.

The New CAE for 2015 ASAE announces updated Exam Content and eligibility requirements

ASAEs CAE Commission has announced an updated Exam Content Outline and expanded eligibility requirements for 2015.

The CAE Exam Content Outline is updated every five years and is based on research and subject matter expert input from a job analysis study conducted in 2013-14. The updated exam outline reflects the increasing sophistication of association executive considerations, including a broadening of business models beyond membership, as well as increased competencies in brand management, diversity and globalization and applies to 2015 through 2019 exams.

FSAE is offering a CAE study class in the fall for the December 2015 exam. We are also partnering with the Michigan SAE to bring online study courses to FSAE members at a member rate. For more visit www.fsae.org/cae

New Eligibility Requirements In response to the changing landscape of employment in association management, the CAE Commission determined that an alternate pathway should be provided to the employment experience requirements. As a result, the CAE Commission has adopted a two-tier alternative to the current employment experience requirement: “Ten years paid service as an employee, independent contractor, or consultant who has demonstrated professional involvement within the association community by providing services as defined by the CAE exam content outline or five years of such service if substantially all of their work is devoted solely to qualifying organizations.”

Several ideas to get this moving in your organization this year are: • Establish a program for your members to exchange best practices and innovative ideas.

• Take a “problem” and crowd source among your members for solutions.

• Encourage free flow of ideas and the opportunity to create for staff.

• Attend education and training for new concepts and ideas.

• Try to create new project or service. What is the biggest crisis facing your members? Generate ideas.

• Implement the new product, service or event.

• Celebrate your successes.

For example; while working with a healthcare association our members were worried about having to deal with Managed Care. We gleaned understanding about what they felt was frustrating, their unmet needs and fears. Then we visualized approaches that could work in a different way.

In this example we “created” our own Provider Network to give members control over their destiny. A Provider Network was not a new idea concept – but what was different, was doing so for long term care providers in Florida!

So make 2015 the year of Innovation and creativity in your organization!
