I hope you’re getting as excited as I am about the FSAE Annual Conference! Exceptional speakers, a new schedule, fantastic hotel and some fun social and teambuilding events all add up to the makings of a wonderful event. Our Co-chairs John Clark, CAE and Eric Szymanski have done a great job of revamping the Conference and creating something for everyone – from young professionals, first- timers and seasoned veterans. If you have not yet registered, stop whatever you doing and make sure you are part of the premiere event for FSAE! We have a brand new, interactive session this year - The Amazing FSAE Challenge Course and Leadership Adventure. Developed in partnership with Catch Your Limit Consulting, the Challenge is a combination scavenger hunt (think Amazing Race), learning lab and strategic thinking about the future of association management. This is absolutely something new that you have never experienced before. Participants will share best practices in growing membership and how to increase non-dues revenue, as well as innovative ideas and leadership strategies. My first month at FSAE has been great! I’ve been able to participate in the Meet & Greet Luncheons in Central and South Florida as well as the Foundation’s Executive Series Luncheons. I do feel a real sense of energy and enthusiasm about FSAE as I get to connect and reconnect with members around the state. Our membership has exploded since the first of the year with over 140 new members, and a strong majority of those are Executive Members. The Qualified Association Specialist (QAS) Program continues to be the hottest ticket in town. We have begun to partner with other SAEs around the country so they can offer QAS to their members. “Leaders should learn to relish interruptions and distractions. It’s through these moments that leaders learn what’s going on and can help cut a path through the chaos and confusion of corporate life. Every ‘interruption’ offers an opportunity to lead impactfully, to set expectations, bring clarity to an issue, or infuse a problem with energy and insight.” As I began my year as your Chair, I could not have envisioned the interruptions and distractions that have appeared along the way. I am so proud of the FSAE Board for being the leaders they are. We have taken advantage of these “opportunities” to develop focused plans for FSAE’s future. We have not allowed the interruptions to keep us from our work, but have embraced them as our work. We have tackled some difficult situations this year and always have done so with the utmost professionalism and discrete candor that was required of each.

It’s hard to believe this is my last column as Chair of the FSAE Foundation. I want to thank the membership for the opportunity to serve in this leadership role and the Board of Trustees for their commitment to the success of FSAE and the FSAE Foundation. Last year, the FSAE Foundation set some fairly modest goals. They included: increasing member contributions, broadening the donor base, expanding the Silent Auction to include an online component and revitalizing Think Tank. I am pleased to report that progress has been made in these areas. While the Foundation is moving in the right direction, revenues must continue to increase so that the FSAE Foundation can become financially selfsupporting.

In 2013, member contributions to the Foundation exceeded budget and were 60 percent higher than in 2012. Even more positive was that the number of donors increased from the previous year. To help keep the fundraising momentum going the Foundation produced its first Annual Report in many years in January. The Annual Report recapped the year’s activities, recognized donors for their generosity and encouraged FSAE members and others to make annual giving to the Foundation a priority.

As Association Executives, we understand that while it might be easier to widely communicate what we are doing to handle a situation, it is not always appropriate. It is at these moments that one hopes your members trust that those they elected to lead the organization are doing so in the best interest of, and for the future of the organization. Though it may not have made sense to you at the time, I know when you see the result you will agree that our Board did an exceptional job this year.

Also in 2013, the Silent Auction, the Foundation’s biggest annual fundraiser, was expanded to include an online auction. The online auction was a logical progression in response to outgrowing space at the Annual Conference and has significant growth potential as non-conference attendees have the opportunity to get in on some great auction deals while supporting the Foundation. The inaugural online auction was a success and will continue to grow as donors and bidders get used to the new event. This is a perfect time to remind you to donate an item to the Foundation Auction, purchase Big Tickets and set a reminder in your calendar to participate in the online Auction May 30 – June 6.

Like most of our members, Jim Ayotte, CAE, Executive Director of FL Manufactured Housing Association (FMHA), needed a strong value proposition for his industry. For FMHA, that value is providing a consumer-based website that educates homebuyers on the benefits of manufactured housing – and connects them with members’ homes or communities that meet those needs. FMHA is a trade association for the manufactured housing industry. Members are comprised of the manufacturing companies that build the homes as well as community owners, retailers, developers and service and supply firms. The two primary benefits that FMHA provides are:

and educating consumers on housing options which generates leads for members.

“The legislative and regulatory advocacy we do for members is extremely important,” said Jim. “Some of our members get it and support the organization 100% on this aspect alone. But it’s intangible. We needed to provide something all our members would find value in and our website strategy has been key.” FMHA has had consumer information on its website since 1997, but in 2012 they reinvented the site to become the premier source of education for the industry. “We’re educating consumers on affordable housing options,” Jim said. “Our website provides a non-threatening way to evaluate the advantages of manufactured homes and communities without the hard-sell. Just recently, we added the functionality to include homes and community listings so consumers can search specific areas of the state for specific home-features and amenities they’re looking for. When they find something they’re interested in, we send those leads to our members.” By adding listings to their site, FMHA is able to offer members something they can’t do on their own. The real estate industry considers manufactured

homes ‘personal property’ and not ‘real property,’ so many real estate websites like Tulia or Zillow won’t take the listings. This leaves manufacturers and community managers with limited options for marketing available homes. FMHA saw this opportunity and had a custom-built Multiple Listing Service (MLS) for its members. “Our members loved the idea of having our own MLS system,” Jim said. “The more information we can provide consumers, the more likely they are to reach out to members on specific homes. We know that browsing for real estate happens online long before a potential buyer calls an agent, so it’s extremely important that our members are able to show their inventory to prospective buyers from the comfort of their living room.” FMHA’s website also helps the association maintain and grow membership through its tangible benefits. “We’re able to use the site analytics to show members what we’re doing for them,” Jim said. “Not only can we tell them how many potential homebuyers we’re reaching, we’re also able to show members how many consumers are looking directly at their communities and properties. This tangible measurement of member value is huge. Plus if you’re not a member, you’re not on our site. “The housing market is coming back, and our site is gaining traction,” Jim added. “We have the information on the areas of the state to live in, and now specific, searchable housing and community listings to make it easier for prospective buyers. It’s our job to market the website to potential snow-birds and retirees looking to move to Florida, and we plan to kick off an aggressive marketing campaign this quarter. The more listings we have and more traffic we generate, the greater our member-value proposition becomes. With good metrics, we can grow our membership and drive non-dues revenue through sponsorship and banner ads.

“Every association wants a value proposition that makes joining and renewals a no-brainer. We know that a good membership ‘hook’ has to be something that’s unique, provides significant value and is something members can’t get on their own. For us, it’s connecting members to customers and our website is an integral part of cultivating and generating those leads.” Has your association implemented an innovative program? How to Deal With Change:

Take Bold Action How do you usually deal with change and uncertainty? Do you freeze? Do you try to ignore it? Do you go into overanalysis mode? Or do you take bold action? Conference Keynote Speaker

In these cases you may be tempted to spend a lot of time analyzing and thinking By Avish about your options. However, Parashar this approach may greatly slow down your path to success while giving your competition the chance to get ahead. Great improvisers, and anyone who is excellent at finding opportunity in the unexpected, understand the power of taking bold action: When uncertain, take bold action. You’ll either get big results or big feedback. Either one will accelerate your success.

When uncertainty strikes, you have three options:

Taking No Action

When you do nothing but analyze and think, you make no progress. You quickly fall behind others who take action.

Taking Tentative Action

When you take small, tentative action, you either get small results or small (or no) feedback. Small results are un-motivating and don’t move you very far down the road to your goals. When things don’t work out, small action leads to little or inconsequential feedback. You can’t learn and adjust if you don’t get enough feedback. Examples of tentative action: • Planning • Researching


• Forming committees (and waiting to meet) • Tabling things “for now” None of these are bad in and of themselves. And you will of course want to do some research and planning before leaping into action. However, when done excessively, or as a way to procrastinate (as is often the case when change hits or you feel uncertain), then they become problematic.

Taking Bold Action

Bold action, on the other hand, leads to either big results or big feedback. Big results are obviously what you are after. They feel good and move you forward. When thing don’t work out you get big feedback. This may sound like a bad

thing, but when you get feedback you can learn from it, make an adjustment, and try again.

Don’t Be Stupid

This is not about being stupid. Bold action doesn’t mean that you bet the farm or take unnecessary risks. It just means that you make a decision and do something. Examples of bold action: • Testing a new pitch to an actual prospect or client. • Trying new material in a speech or training session. • Assembling a prototype and testing it out. • Implementing a new meeting or event format. • Launching a pilot program with a small group of clients.

It may seem scary, but you will learn far more and make much faster progress by taking bold action, analyzing the results, making adjustments, and then acting again than you ever will by just analyzing. The next time you are faced with change, or an unexpected setback, or any kind of uncertainty, take a small, smart, and bold step and see what happens. You may very well be pleasantly surprised.

The NonDiscrimination Provisions

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been a dominant news item since being passed in 2010. One provision of the ACA that has not received much attention (or scrutiny) is the rules on non-discrimination. Non-discrimination in the provision of insurance benefits is not an entirely new concept. In fact, since 1981, selfinsured health plans have been subject to non-discrimination rules. Under traditional notions of non-discrimination in employer-provided insurance, employers may not discriminate in favor of “highly compensated individual[s]”. As such, an employer may not discriminate based on eligibility for participation and the amount of benefits provided to its workforce. However, fully insured plans have been treated differently. For fully insured plans, employers were allowed to discriminate among health insurance benefits offered to employees (i.e., the plan was funded through commercial insurance). Thus, historically, an employer was allowed to provide comprehensive health insurance to its executive employees at no cost to those employees, while providing minimum coverage at a cost to its hourly employees. The ACA closed this disparity. Now, under the ACA, non-discrimination rules apply to all group health plans that are grandfathered under the law. Stated differently, group health plans cannot discriminate in favor of highly compensated individuals based on “eligibility to participate” and benefit level. The ACA adopts the Internal Revenue Code’s definition of “highly compensated employees, as follows:

Perhaps the most troubling aspect of the ACA’s non-discrimination rules is the penalties imposed by the law. In fact, the penalties are harsher than the traditional non-discrimination rules that apply to self-funded plans. Under the ACA, the penalty is generally $100 per day per discriminated employee. So, by way of example, if an employer pays a higher portion of the premium for its executives and has 100 employees that are not treated the same, the employer’s penalty would be $10,000 per day (100 employees x $100). Moreover, employees who do not meet the definition of “highly compensated employee” are able to file a lawsuit under ERISA to require the employer to provide nondiscriminatory benefits. As a result, unlike the play-or-pay provisions of the ACA, an employer may not simply choose to incur a penalty in lieu of complying with the non-discrimination rules.

Group health plans cannot discriminate in favor of highly compensated individuals based on “eligibility to participate” and benefit level. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has not yet promulgated rules implementing the non-discrimination provisions of the ACA. Because further guidance is necessary before employers can comply with the ACA’s non-discrimination rules, employers are not required to comply until after the IRS engages in rulemaking on this subject. Nevertheless, employers need to be proactive and take affirmative steps to ensure non-discrimination in the provision of health insurance does not exist regardless of whether the plan used is self-insured or fully funded.

Carol Berkowitz Joins Florida Health Care Association as Associate Director of Government Affairs Florida Health Care Association (FHCA) is pleased to announce that Carol Berkowitz, Esq. has joined the staff as Associate Director of Government Affairs. Carol has a Master’s Degree in Gerontology and will provide FHCA with advocacy, public policy, legal and legislative expertise. She also brings an important understanding of skilled nursing and assisted living facility regulations and not-for-profit association management. The Florida Bankers Association launched the Bank On My Dream contest, which will award 10 - $5,000 prizes to individuals nominated by Florida non-profit groups. Nominations are due by May 23, after which the public will be invited to vote on their favorite submissions. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded in June and July. The Californiabased Don and Lorraine Freeberg Foundation recently pledged $3 million to support the expansion efforts of the Give Kids The World Village, based in Kissimmee, FL. Recently, Shirley

Hough, president and CEO of Sierra Land Group, Inc., along with the foundation’s board of directors, presented Pamela Landwirth, president of Give Kids The World, a check for $1 million, along with the commitment of an additional $2 million over the next two years. entertainment-show room section of its new Towne Hall that will house the food service and entertainment components for the entire Give Kids The World Village. I am happy to report that we have achieved those goals. We have utilized the interruptions to evaluate our programs and services to assure we are providing relevant services at the highest level possible. This evaluation led to the expansion of some events into the Central and Southern areas of the State. Our Sponsorship Task Force led by Jim Ayotte, held several conversations with our Associate members and determined that the current program was not broken, but simply needed to be refined – that will be implemented in 2015. Under the leadership of Nominating Committee Chair John Ricco, our committee identified four individuals who will bring new blood and a new perspective to FSAE’s Board of Directors as they are installed at this year’s Annual Conference. It was never a goal of mine to change the world as Chair of FSAE, but I feel comfortable that we have together changed the direction of FSAE for the better and for a long term, sustainable future. The steps taken by the Board, coupled with the hiring of our new President and CEO, Frank Rudd, has brought a new level of energy to FSAE, and a promise of a member centric philosophy that puts serving the members in the most exceptional way possible, at the top of our list of priorities. We know when we can accomplish that, everything else becomes exponentially easier. Someone once said that “organizations are living systems in which people are connecting all the time” and how true that is of FSAE. The connections that our members are making at FSAE are remarkable and have proven to catapult individuals who chose to become engaged forward in their careers. If you have enjoyed that result, please share that with others and encourage others to join and get involved so they too can experience FSAE. As I leave my position of Chair, I encourage you to treat every interruption as a golden opportunity to contribute meaningfully. When we can embrace the unexpected, our true capacity to lead surfaces, and we can seize the chance to inspire a sense of possibilities and innovation. Through that, we can stimulate the continuous desire to take strategic steps that will better the entire organization. Thank you for allowing me to serve.

The success of Think Tank set the wheels in motion to identify the next cutting-edge industry topic and develop a program for the next Think Tank. A Task Force has been formed and specific recommendations for a topic, facilitator and dates will be made to the Board of Trustees in July. Stay tuned for details. Lastly, I want to congratulate the incoming leadership of the Foundation. In July, Deborah Boza-Valledor, COO of the Miami REALTORS will become Chair; Jamie Caldwell, ACHE, VP of the South Florida Hospital & Healthcare Association will become Vice Chair; and Donna Son, Executive Vice President of Operations and Administration/ Chief Financial Officer of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants will become the Treasurer. Buy FSAE: It Matters Value. Time. Connections. Network. ROI. Community. Each of these words has such a strong presence in our lives, yet none of them are simple to quantify. When you’re hanging around your association executive fellows, it doesn’t take long for the conversation to digress to the topic of the association management system (AMS). And when it does, no association exec is lacking emotion about the technology that they have to use every day. By Teri Carden

Selecting an AMS is one of the most important investments an association has to make. And as humans, we highly value the opinions of our family, friends, and peers. With these two things in mind, Review My AMS has been born. Review My AMS is a website where executives can speak openly and honestly about their experiences with their AMS. The site allows association executives to anonymously review, comment on, and rate their AMS based on customer service, ease of use, reliability, and customization. End users share their review for free then they get to read all the reviews of their peers for free. It’s a beautiful thing! Here are a couple excerpts of real reviews that you will find on Review My AMS.

From Should We Do It to Making It Better Thoughts from Peach New Media’s Dave Will For most organizations, the question about technology and learning has changed from “Should we use technology in our educational content?” to “How do we better our educational content with technology?” The conversation used to be focused on the benefits of creating technology-enabled or technologyenhanced learning. The spotlight has shifted from should we do it to making it better. The sophistication of the administrators and end users has evolved, causing us to ask how. How Dave Will do we create an educational program Chief Executive Peach that helps us achieve our mission? Peach New Media How do we drive more non-dues revenue? How do we drive loyalty to our organization? How do we increase the value of membership? As the Chief Executive Peach at Peach New Media, I speak on behalf of our team and our experience with hundreds of associations that deliver learning to millions of professionals through our Learning Content Management System, Freestone™. Our experience supports the data we see in this Tagoras Association Learning + Technology report, where we learned that nearly 90 percent of associations and member-based organizations are already delivering technology-enabled learning, primarily via live and on-demand content. The emphasis is not on social media or gamification, as much as it’s on delivering a valuable, reliable, accessible continuing education program. My conversations with association executives tell me that doing learning well is the ultimate goal. The more Peach partners with clients, the more evident it is that doing it well is not about offering more bells and whistles; it’s about providing an effective and enjoyable learning experience. Since I’ve mentioned the focus on doing it well, here are three trends that are at the forefront of successful technology-based learning programs.

Platform integration

When dabbling in technology-based learning, it’s only natural to start with a few Webinars, Webcasts, and on-demand seminars. However, part of the evolution of many associations not only includes ramping up the volume of content, but also utilizing a learning platform to its potential. This means allowing your learning platform to “talk” to your membership platform, as well as any other database your association uses. By utilizing APIs as the key to data exchange, you can offer end users a single sign-on experience. You’ll offer your members the opportunity to only have to remember one ID and password to access everything available to them on separate systems.

Oftentimes, it’s your association management system (AMS) that acts as the database of record and the gateway to the other platforms. An integration allows data to transfer back and forth between platforms. This data transfer can happen in a wide variety of ways. A common need we see is for membership status from the member database to control the privileges of an end user on your learning platform. This can be easily managed through integrations. Many clients also track member activity in their membership database, meaning a push of information from your learning platform will have to be accepted to track members’ learning data. A successful integration can manage all aspects of data exchange for you, allowing you to have a far greater understanding of your members, their interests, and their involvement in your association.

Software as a service (SaaS)

Traditionally, enterprise software solutions were sold with a perpetual license and installed on your on-site servers. This usually required a large and complicated up-front investment, followed by expensive upgrades upon new product releases. Today’s market is offering faster configurations with Webbased solutions. Learning platforms are no exception. The best platforms require a minimal up-front investment and are paid on a flat-fee, monthly model that may incorporate live and on-demand content capture, hosting, and distribution. This allows for growth in your program without penalty. This style of solution provides regular updates to the software that don’t require changes to critical integrations. SaaS learning platforms also have a comprehensive set of administrative controls so that you can configure the platform specifically to your needs while managing the learner path for the end users.

Free versus fee

Everything worth doing is worth overdoing, right? Well, we’re beginning to see strong competition in online content. It’s forcing content providers, like you, to think about competitive pricing and increased value. A common trend is to incorporate some component of free content in your learning strategy. Often this contributes to membership retention and your organization’s value proposition. Some associations are focused not only on driving non-dues revenue via technology-based learning, but also boosting membership value, therefore increasing retention and growing membership. Of course, there are many other important components to a continuing education program, like superior customer service, or the need for mobile accessibility as highlighted in the Tagoras report. These factors and more show us every organization is thinking about delivering learning even better than they are now. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Is this on the mark or completely off base? Hot Trends in Association Tech: the case for Gamification Successful online engagement can benefit from utilizing the top disruptive trends in technology, and many are important for association execs and their techs to embrace. Success in online communities is not one-size-fits-all, but rather something an association determines and works toward. Tracking performance allows for measuring how well the community is doing, or what’s needed to improve engagement.

Gamification is one useful tech element that can bolster member activity and participation in online communities, and some associations are using gamification-style solutions in order to better measure member engagement.

A little competition goes a long way for a more active online community. Members appreciate recognition, so awarding levels of prestige such as online badges and ribbons helps to incentivize them to continue participating. Competition drives people to participate, since every community has its share of both active users and lurkers. Gamification features ultimately make participation “sticky,” which means what starts as competition among members soon becomes genuine engagement and daily habits. These elements all support gamification as a vital element of online community success. Another way to boost engagement with gamification is to send out calls to action in order to ask members to engage more. With the nickname “shamification,” it uses messaging tactics that spur users to higher engagement levels out of a natural inclination to do better than their peers or make the most out of their membership benefits. For example, send out an email campaign that touts “80% of your peers have a more completed profile than you,” or “60% of your contacts have already registered for the annual conference.” Even in a worst-case scenario, if the activity quality has diminished as a result of people posting low-value content to “game” the system, simply adding a weighting based on the rating of respective contributions can help significantly.

It’s important to remember that every association is different. Simply throwing gamification tactics into the mix and declaring the community a success within one time snapshot is not a complete solution. Community engagement takes time to build and success is not likely to be immediately apparent. It’s highly likely that there will be some mistakes and missteps on the path to success. Mistakes are good – it’s always productive to learn from them and then adapt.
