COVER STORY
The Global
City of Future
VIJAYAWADA
Shweta Kulkarni explores the fast evolving commercial hub – Vijayawada, which has been the most important centre of culture and commerce in Andhra Pradesh, and hopefully soon to be the new state capital.
T
outed as the global city of the future, Vijayawada boasts of a dynamic economy based on agriculture, trade, and commerce. The city’s flourishing economy is further enhanced by the presence of the biggest rail junction in India, availability of abundant water through its various river network, airport and four lane road network. Better known as Andhra Pradesh’s business capital, this quaint town with its unique agricultural base as well as industrial set-up played an underdog for years. However, now the city of victory has suddenly sprung up into limelight, ever since the State has pitched
for locating the new capital between Vijayawada and Guntur regions. The region rightly takes credit for heavily influencing the evolution of modern Andhra Pradesh, as it provided a critical mass for vibrant cultural, political, and entrepreneurial growth. The fertile soil and abundant water supply facilitates the agriculture sector in Vijayawada, which in turn supports the numerous plants involved in manufacturing goods based on agriculture produce. The city’s economy is further fuelled by the explosive growth in the industrial sector, which largely comprises of small-scale industries for garments, automobile body building,
hardware and iron . Industrial hubs like Auto Nagar and Kondapalli Estate houses several automobile parts manufacturing units, thermal plants and other power plants employing more than 100,000 workers. The city also has a flourishing wholesale trade mainly concentrated on iron products, cereals, pulses, and other edible products, pharmacy, fertilizers, mango exports, metal, fancy markets, and so on. Formerly known as Bezawada, Vijayawada saw rapid growth after the construction of the famous Prakasam Barrage and three irrigation canals—Eluru, Ryves and Bandar canals, in 1855. Andhra Pradesh largely owes its rich agriculture to the Prakasam dam as the project facilitated the irrigation of large tracts of farmland. The three canals associated with the barrage run through the city of Vijayawada crossing it and giving it a Venetian appearance. In fact, some former politicians and mayors
10

of the city often spoke about turning Vijayawada into a place as beautiful as Venice and to build it as a flourishing trade centre. However, despite having enormous potential to tap, Vijayawada remained to be the most understated city. Mr. Suresh Rayudu Chitturi, Chairman of CII Andhra Pradesh, and CEO of Srinivasa Hatcheries Group wisely points out, “The Vijayawada-Guntur area as well as other parts of Andhra Pradesh faced a setback
as the state government focused more on developing Hyderabad and completely overlooked the potential of other regions.” However, now with the keen interest shown by the government in building this industrial hub as the state capital, the city can be expected to undergo a complete makeover in terms of development. “The biggest enterprise in Vijayawada is ‘Enterprise’.

Going forward it is important that the government supports the entrepreneurs who are playing a big role in shaping the town as a business centre. Government should facilitate transparent rules, which are easy to follow and enforce,” says Chitturi. He further adds, “While agriculture is the mainstay of this region, food processing and food related industry has a huge potential to grow too.”
Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam with Mr. L.P. Bhaskara Rao at Chinmaya Vijaya Orphanage.
Chitturi’s wise comment stands strong given the fact that individual enterprises have played the most dominant part in the growth of the city and has contributed to a great extent to the economy of Vijayawada, making it the business centre that it is today.
Groups like LEPL have constantly strived to redefine the economic image of the city and have made large contributions through its various CSR activities. One commendable project that the LEPL group initiated is the Chinmaya Vijaya Orphanage, in Kaza, Andhra Pradesh. This non-political, non-government, all-girls orphanage was opened in 2007 by the Chairman of LEPL Group Mr. L . P. Bhaskara Rao along with NRI doctor, Dr. M Apparao. Built on six acres of land, donated generously by LEPL group to initiate social responsibility, it is committed to the care of orphaned and homeless girls. It provides them with a family, a home, education, recreation and builds a strong foundation to
prepare the girls to face life independently by providing them with professional and/or vocational training. Presently there are 110 girls who get benefitted with this initiative. The aim is to absorb them into the social mainstream and help them, if they choose, with the completion of their education, employment, and/or marriage. Initiatives such as these are driving the city towards accelerated growth. So far, Vijayawada has achieved and grown on its own with such enterprise and private initiatives. Interestingly, the GDP of Vijayawada for 2008 was estimated at Rs. 5526 crores, which rose to Rs.18,000 crore in 2010 and is projected to grow to Rs.1,00,000 crore by 2025. The city today boasts of a thriving agro-based industry, manufacturing sector as well as a booming retail sector. What is most captivating is that about 72% of the population is involved in the tertiary sector, which speaks highly of the economic development the city has experienced. With its energy and the accelerated economy, time is not far when Vijayawada overcomes all its setbacks and becomes the most talented and powerful city of India. It’s time for triumph, for the land whose name itself means victory.

Air Costa MD, Mr. L.V.S. Rajasekhar, who has been instrumental in bringing multinational retail brands to cities such as Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Guntur, shares his thoughts on the flourishing business hub – Vijayawada.
he creation of the new state of Andhra Pradesh and the ensuing new capital city being proposed in-between Vijayawada and Guntur thrusts the two aforementioned cities into a vortex of growth and expansion. Vijayawada is already well-connected by extensive road and rail networks, and adding air connectivity will definitely encourage the economic development in this region and make it a true commercial hub. As announced by the Airports Authority of India, there is a proposal to develop a new international airport at Vijayawada that will soon connect the city to international destinations, thus capturing the attention of multinational companies and the world at large. This would not only stimulate existing industries in Vijayawada, such as infrastructure, agro, automobile, hardware, textile, consumer goods among others, but also bring in other service-based industries such as IT/ITES, banking, finance and insurance. All this, eventually paving the way for the city to emerge as a cosmopolitan industrial service centre. Air Costa has definitely contributed a great deal towards this brand new dynamism of Vijayawada. Very few cities in the region can claim to be the hub of their very own airline. With growth in the metros reaching saturation point, Tier II cities like Vijayawada present great potential for growth, if fully leveraged. Even before the bifurcation of the State, LEPL had taken the lead to transform the way of life in Vijayawada by bringing in international retail brands, along with world-class housing and medical facilities. I am confident that Air Costa will also play a vital part in this transformation story of Vijayawada.
Apart from being the buzzing commercial centre, the land of victory also has several tourist attractions, which are a must visit when on a trip to Vijayawada.
Bhavani Island
14
Bhavani Island It is one of the largest islands on the Krishna river. AP Tourism is converting this 133 acre (54 hectare) island into an attractive tourist spot and a River Front Resort. The island currently has some cottages to stay in and some good adventure and fun sports. The island is accessible from the mainland by boat. The placid waters make it an ideal picnic spot, besides there is extensive forest coverage, shimmering ponds and rolling meadows.

I believe in an inclusive growth structure that benefits everyone. We at LEPL subscribe to the notion that generating employment and tapping local talent is very important for the development of any city. The future looks promising, however a lot of work remains to be done and it can’t be done by the government alone. And we believe that the only way ahead in turning this dream into a reality is by the participation of private players.

Mogalarajapuram Caves The caves are reputed to be the first of their kind in South India. The idols of the Hindu gods Nataraja, Vinayaka and Arthanareeswara were carved here, but none of the statues are available here. Out of the three cave temples constructed here, only one is still in good condition with the idols of Lord Nataraja, Vinayaka and others. Prakasam Barrage Prakasam Barrage is an impressive 1223.5m long, modern regulator and road bridge that stretches across the river Krishna. Built across the river Krishna connecting Guntur district, Prakasam Barrage has created a panoramic lake. Its three canals that run through the city give Vijayawada a Venetian look.
Mangalagiri Mangalagiri means ‘The Auspicious Hill.’ This elephant shaped hill is one of the eight important Mahakshetrams (sacred places) in India. There are three Narasimha Swamy temples in Mangalagiri. One is Panakala Narasimha Swamy on the hill, another one is Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy at the foot of the temple and third is the Gandala Narasimha Swamy at the top of the hill. Lakshmi Narasimha is one of the most famous temples of Mangalagiri. The temple, built by the Reddi Chiefs in the 14th Century on a hillock was remodelled in the period 17th to 18thC. The devotees believe that the deity accepts only half the quantity of ‘Panaka’ (jaggery dissolved in water) offered by devotees. There is a small Garuda Shrine in front resembling a chariot.

While every downpour revives your spirit, the wet-season often dampens the fashionista in you and looking good can be quite a challenge. However, all is not lost as we bring to you all the monsoon essentials that will help you wade through the season fashionably. Go Shorty Monsoons is the time when one should give a break to that favourite pair of jeans. Denim pants are too difficult to dry off in this wet weather. tank tops and loose t-shirt for that mess-free-chic rain look. Cropped trousers also works well for this season. Wear them with a casual t-shirt or pair them with sleek blouses for a corporate formal look. Material Matters Soft—cottons, poly fabrics, nets, nylons, georgettes, and sheer are apt for this weather as they dry off easily. Fashionstreets and stores are lined with dresses, skirts, and tops in these fabrics. Ensure that you avoid wearing long maxi dresses and skirts, a few seconds in the rain and

he essence of energy consumption has not changed over the last few decades. People have been using fuel-powered vehicles and the internals of the combustion engine have pretty much stayed the same; people have been using conventional coal powered energy to fuel their homes and offices; governments have built plants relying on conventional sources of energy and so on. But, this is not sustainable—we have limited deposits of fossil fuels on earth and with an everincreasing demand, mankind needs to changeover to a more environmental friendly and renewable source of energy. Renewable energy is still a niche in India and especially solar-powered homes, but due to our geographical location (around 8-9 hours of sun everyday in most parts) a
large part of the country has an immense potential to reap the benefits of solar power. After all, why should you pay steep energy bills when the
biggest source of energy is right above you? With around 5000Twh received every year, even the potential to tap one tenth of it could signal the end

Musk’s new venture, a solar powered city, aptly named Solar City, is making big waves as it aims to provide electricity to your home and charge your electric car, with zero emissions to the environment and minimal bills (for the installation of the solar panels). Another interesting campaign on the popular crowd funding site, Indiegogo, was about raising money to build solar roadways—a modular paving system powered by the sun, which if installed on a wide scale can arguably produce more energy than a particular
country consumes as a whole. With governments supporting the push by the private sector into renewable, we are playing on a level field as small and big companies have the opportunity to make a big impact for a more sustainable future. With regards to solar energy and India, there are a lot of existing solutions that could get you started for your home; but renewable energy still needs a massive push from the government and the biggies in the electric sector for it to be pushed out on a grand scale to the common man. For economic and environmental reasons, the push towards renewable/sustainable energy will be the key in elevating
the current energy related problems faced by people living in the rural and urban areas. Sport psychologist Dr. Shree Advani explains what it takes to become a real champion!

ou are down 30-40 and 3-5 in the deciding set of a crucial tennis match. The sweat on your palms is not only due to physical exertion or the heat. The pressure to win by your parents and coach weighs down heavy on your head and chest. Your heart is racing and thoughts rampantly flooding. Your strokes are not working even though you have practiced them a million times. There are so many questions but no answers. What is going on? Now, freeze this image and ask any athlete to relate to this scenario. Not ideal, yet, they all in their respective sport will find themselves in such

predicaments. Its crunch time and only the tough will prevail. In addition, this toughness is not primarily of the body, but more to do with the entity residing upstairs—the Mind. In a holistic sense, there are two areas that a professional sportsperson needs to develop in order to be successful—Mind and Body. The ‘Body’ aspect is looked after by a skills coach, fitness trainer, nutrition specialist, physiotherapist, etc. Just having one coach is not enough these days, although many such coaches may not agree, as they have struggled to move with the times and instead prefer being a jack of all. A sports coach is there
activation, team dynamics and performance routines. In our culture, we believe that one has to visit a sport psychologist only when there is an issue on the mental side of things. A gross misconception. World champions and many topranked players are aware of the importance of the mind and never fail to keep this area of training active and ongoing. Why, you ask? Well, the practical sportsperson knows that his or her competitors are working as hard, if not harder than them and the solution is to keep finding ways to get better. Since sport psychology is in its nascent stages in India, those opting to go with a mind coach will gain the competitive edge. While choosing a sport psychologist, however, be certain to check the following: • Solid, relevant qualifications - There are many fly-bynight operators in the system that have read a few articles on Google and now call themselves “Sport Psychologists”. Beware! • Ask the psychologist about their experience in terms of years, sports, clients, and
success rate. • Ensure that they have had competitive sporting experience themselves or else they will only be giving you book knowledge (it is of little use without the pivotal element of coaching). • Be positive that frequencies match; that you feel comfortable in their company and believe you can trust them. A vast age gap can prove detrimental, as the psychologist may not be able to relate to the current day’s challenges faced by the youth. Rest assured that Sport Psychology is growing in
popularity as its importance is being recognised at even entry-level of competitive sport. Professionals, amateurs, schools and universities—all are exposing themselves and/or their sportspeople to mental skills development in order to enhance performance levels. Of late, corporate honchos and business people too are applying sport psychology principles to improve their own and as well as their employees’ abilities to deal with pressure and perform to their potential. While playing a sport is considered natural
to help with the technicalities and strategies, but other areas such as nutrition, fitness, and mind need to be catered to. And for that, one needs many coaches—a team of specialists, so to speak. When it comes to coaching the ‘Mind’, the field deals with: • Redefining thinking patterns that have been engrained over a period of time • Subconscious programming • Emotional management, and • Sport-specific mental strategies. Sports psychology deals with three board areas – Confidence, anxiety, and motivation and covers key coaching topics like goalsetting, imagery, self-talk, AUGUST 2014 / HAPPY FLYING!

or easy, applying the honed skills is a science in itself. For example, one can learn to walk. Once we know how to, we just do it. We may feel there is nothing more to it. We just simply walk. But only a specialist, like a chiropractor or a physiotherapist will be able to improve our gait by asking us to keeping the back straight, shoulders thrown back, swinging arms and so on. While we all know how to walk, consulting a specialist will enhance that experience. Likewise, a sportsperson will know how to play the sport, but how to excel in it is the role of sports psychology. Delving a little deeper into the subject, we come to understand that in order to perform, the mind requires unlearning counterproductive habits, relearning new and effective ones, developing mental strategies to control stress and pressure, strengthening mental processes as well as behavioural patterns. It taps into latent potential and better regulates emotional stability. In sports, it helps the athlete in their approach towards tournaments as well as practice. Whatever the result in a championship, the sportsperson must not
42
AUGUST 2014 / HAPPY FLYING!
waver post-tournament. Handling a loss at times is as challenging as dealing with a title. An exit from a tournament can adversely impact the confidence levels whereas a win in the finals may, at times, get the athlete to take the foot off the pedal in the next competitive outing. But when guided properly, victories can be used to further enhance performance next time around. If not, the pressure of living up to growing expectations can prove damaging resulting
in substandard training and practice. Mind coaching is meant for anyone who is looking to improve the quality of efforts in their respective field of expertise, in a role that brings with it its share of pressure as well as expectation to perform. In addition, even parents are guided as they play a significant part in the child’s journey in sport. Having a sports child requires parents to be a lot more sensitive and aware of the weight of
their words and actions. My personal experience of 18 years with a younger sports sibling made me realize the power the people who form the direct circle of influence have on the athlete. The vocabulary used – forbidden terms like “failure” or “bad performance”—or the inadvertent pressure applied to get positive results can deny the sportsperson a decent show in a match. Dealing with losses must be done gently, providing them comfort and encouragement. At the end of the day, there is no failure. Winning makes you triumphant while losing makes you more experienced and better equipped for the future. My billiards and snooker playing brother, Pankaj (Advani), often states, “Winning takes you one step forward, losing takes you ten.” Of course, no one wants to lose. However, when it does happen, and it definitely will to everybody, it will only make you stronger, provided it is taken in the right spirit. Parents are guided to let go of ‘results’ and develop patience. They send kids to an academy or club and expect a trophy in a couple of months. Instead, they need to be more interested
in the child developing the necessary attitude and skills over a period of time, building a solid base for the future, whether the child remains in sport or not. The target should be incremental success— learning and developing step by step. No sportsperson becomes a world champion overnight. In conclusion, sport is a spiritual experience. In the situation stated at the start of the article, we have to dig deep within to pull out from the reserves of our innermost being to supersede our own level of play and then that of our opponent. It brings about greater self-awareness through the right coaching medium, allowing athletes to discover more about themselves on a continuous basis. How we interact with our mind throughout the day is critical. The mind goes through over 50,000 thoughts a day. And more than 90% of them won’t be entirely positive. What does this tell you about our mental being? Our internal dialogue with ourselves can get extremely destructive. We wake up to negative news, while stress is carried forward from the previous day and worries about the day ahead. Sports people and those in performance-orientated roles
have massive requirements to remain positive, light and focused on their goals. There is no room for negativity. But with mind coaching, one can be helped in re-wiring the brain and its established patterns. Our thoughts lead to forming our beliefs, which in turn establish our ability, thereby producing commensurate action, and ultimately yielding its result. Therefore, to get the desired result, start with thinking right. Wishing you a pleasant flight and great mental health!

Gorgeous Wedding Hairstyles Renowned celebrity hairstylist Asgar Saboo prepares a Do-it-yourself (DIY) guide to no fuss, chic hairdos that will help you look your best with minimal effort at any wedding functions.
e Indians love weddings, especially destination weddings, and whilst the thought of a getaway to an idyllic beach wedding sounds like the perfect escape from reality, the fact is that for most guests, taking the day off to get pampered and prep is not always an option. So for those of us rushing from work to pack a cluttered suitcase and jump on a plane, Asgar Saboo, celebrity hairstylist and style director at the Daniel Galvin salon (Mayfair) shares some quick fixes that will leave your friends in awe. The Unique-Picturesque Princess Whether it’s a castle or a vineyard, a lighthouse or the mountains, there is no need to fret. You cannot go wrong with a classical bouncy blowout. Start by applying a volumizing anti-frizz mousse and divide your hair into four sections, then part it across the middle. Clip up the sections and then patiently work on one at a time with the help of a classic round brush and a good hairdryer. Tame the strands by directing the nozzle over the bristles and brush the strands from top to bottom. It is important to work the roots before giving the ends that nice soft curl. Finish by applying a hairspray to secure the hairdo. The Rustic-Belle A rustic country wedding calls for a romantic and feminine ‘undo’. Think glamorous yet understated. Wash your hair the day before to allow the hair to produce enough natural oils so it will not fall flat immediately. Apply a styling mousse to your damp tresses, this will make it easier to hold the curl and will give it a nice volume and texture. With the

help of curling tongs, create loose waves with the top and front sections of your hair. Then divide your hair into three sections and gather the middle section into a low undone bun. Secure it with bobby pins. Take the remaining sections and loosely pin the strands into the bun creating a ‘loose tuck’ effect. If ever there is an occasion to wear flowers in your hair, this is it. Adorn the ‘undo’ with pretty flowers for the ultimate rustic-belle look. The Boho-Beach Babe A boho-chic half-up halfdown twisted hairdo is apt for a sweet playful look that will weather the seaside breeze and stay in place. Start by
applying salt spray to your damp hair and scrounging it up to get a tousled texture. Use large Velcro rollers or a hair curler to get large bouncy curls. Then center-part your hair and carefully twist one strand of hair on each side carefully securing them at the back. The twisted sides frame the face beautifully and can be adorned with flowers, for a bohemian look. The City-Glam Chick Sleek sophistication is the key to a glamorous city wedding; hence go for a classical and elegant updo. The ballerina bun is ideal, timeless and feminine. This is a very easy style that works with every dress. Start by thoroughly brushing your strands and apply a serum for a smooth and tangle-free feel. Then pull your hair up in a high ponytail and proceed by grabbing the base of the ponytail and carefully wrap it around the bun and pin it down with bobby pins.

ART into much more than just art—it is a medium for fearless self-expression, an alternate voice with an alternative point of view. From radical political views to branded messages, graffiti is a vibrant, versatile canvas. Moreover, if you look carefully at graffiti art, you will realize that it is a reflection of all that is right—and wrong— with our world today.

Making A Statement Graffiti has always been a global phenomenon. Brazil is known globally to have one of the most rich and diverse graffiti art scenes in the world. In fact, artists from all over the world head to Brazil when they need that spark of inspiration. Brazil has always been a country with a massive rich-poor divide, with most media concentrated in the hands of the wealthy few. Against this socio-economic backdrop, graffiti art became the alternate voice—where ordinary voices came alive in extraordinary ways. Meanwhile in troubled West Bank, the giant concrete barrier erected between Israel
and Palestine has become an unlikely yet effective canvas for graffiti artists. From provocative political messages like — ‘If building walls secures freedom, who is really free?’, to desperate calls for peace such as — ‘God is too big for just one religion’ and even humour in the midst of all the tension — ‘Make hummus, not walls’, the West Bank Barrier is fully loaded.
Graffiti has an interesting past of showing up amid political strife. In the 1920s, Mao Zedong (commonly known as Mao Tse-tung) used graffiti messages to galvanise China into a communist revolution. Mao is credited with a 4000 character-long graffiti message (which extensively detailed all that is wrong with the Chinese society), believed to be one

propaganda, promotions for films and shameless advertising for all sorts of products—from local soaps, aerated drinks to mobile network services. Several years ago, Mumbai saw a rather interesting spurt of graffiti take over its streets. ‘Beanbags,’ followed by a landline number hastily scrawled in red handwriting, started showing up on walls, buildings, pillars, light posts, abandoned blocks of concrete… no surface was
spared. The graffiti caught the imagination of the city, with endless speculation about its origin and purpose. Graffiti in India is gradually coming of age. If you visit Delhi’s upmarket Hauz Khas Village, you will be greeted by vibrant and vivacious graffiti art, taking over abandoned buildings, empty parking lots and uninhabited structures. A graffiti artist who goes by the name of Daku takes credit for much of this work. Daku (meaning ‘dacoit’ in Hindi)

Interestingly, the recent 2014 general elections saw a frenzy of political graffiti take the country by storm—an interesting mix of beautiful art with a political point of view. Caricature-like graffiti that cropped up on the streets of Kolkata, for example, lampooned the state’s top leaders. raw face—ultimately taking away from the very sanctity of the medium. That said, there is an important circumstantial element in the battle between creativity and commercialization. Some of the best graffiti comes in times of war—and some of the worst (branded) graffiti comes in times of peace. Ironic, but true.
The Road Ahead Legally speaking, graffiti still occupies a grey area. While cities around the world give permission for graffiti art, even demarking areas for the purpose, the very nature of graffiti is that it needs no one’s permission. Various brands have explored graffiti as a communication medium with differing degrees of success. I do fear that commercialization will cause graffiti to lose its honest, unapologetic,

You lose yourself only when you lose perspective of why you are doing what you are doing. Yes, initially perhaps I signed up for the first of the lot merely because all other actresses were doing that kind of work and I simply did not want to lose out or look unapproachable for any sort of work. Eventually I realised that it’s just not me, but a girl has to live, I thought I might as well make some money in the bargain. Despite the many odd films you agreed to do, you seemed to have rubbed some producers and actors the wrong way; some did not even let you promote your own films... I want someone who has a strong persona, who takes command over his life and guides me. At the same time, I am someone who is pretty head-strong; I can be pretty stubborn too. I think I need to stand up for things I believe in, I have been doing that from a very young age. I come from a patriarchal family—my father holds the reins very tight—yet when I needed to I showed I could stand my own even against him. That is me—I don’t mind a guiding hand but I refuse to be smothered. It’s a thin line and who is to say a strong person would like someone like me? He might prefer someone more malleable. It’s better to immerse yourself in your craft rather than analyse things too much. I guess it happens with most successful people. I am listening to you but I am stuck to that previous comment. Did you say dangerous? Annoying perhaps would be more apt... Tell me, when parents are busy keeping their brood alive will they notice any affliction that has caused the trauma? The teens you see carrying kids at traffic signals, what do they know about parenting? It’s too deep in the muck, that’s where we are. I don’t mind a guiding hand but I refuse to be smothered. That is not to say I won’t date and I will be celibate all my life – I am just buying time.” forget everything else? I go to sleep. My mom says I act like a patient when I am home. I sleep my days off, wake up only to grab a bite and then back to the bed. A young girl like you must not confess to this, you should claim your date diary is full! And scare off Mr. I-haveshoulders-you-can-lean-on further away? But seriously, that’s how I am at home, at least the first day of a break in schedule. The second day onwards, you will find me fleeing the house. After all, a young girl my age would need to get away from the mad-house from time to time. Seriously, how I would love a strong shoulder and the rest of the person too, of course. Love and acceptance are so important in life... …As are respect and trust; these are the fundamentals in a relationship. Unfortunately, having lived life on my terms for so long, I am really not willing to compromise on any of them. I want it all and I need it all. And I am certain I am not the only one with this ‘all or nothing’ take towards relationships. It might take time but it will happen. I have seen glimpses of the bliss that awaits in love in my previous relationship, but it had to get over. Now I know what I want, which is half the battle won! HAPPY FLYING! / AUGUST 2014

LEGENDS
“I have played every role with
utmost sincerity” Jamuna
Jamuna, the leading Tollywood heroine of ‘50s, ‘60s and the early ‘70s says life couldn’t have been any better in a candid chat with Shweta Kulkarni.

he graced the silver screen as a leading lady for about three decades—portraying a variety of feisty women characters, which were rarely depicted on the Indian screen. She survived through flop films, emerged as a triumphant warrior when a pair of powerful male stars put an embargo against her—and after thirty years, she graciously gave up her successful movie career to dedicate herself to social work and politics. Moreover, amid all these she successfully played the role of a homemaker and a mother. Looking back, yesteryear’s legendary actress—Jamuna has no regrets. Rather she smiles contentedly as she says, “I have played every role with utmost sincerity, be it of an actress, a politician,

a social worker, a wife or a mother. I gave my hundred per cent and I am happy that God was so kind to me by giving me so many opportunities in life. Very few people from traditional families have become film actors in my generation. I survived as a successful actress for about three decades without losing my self-respect. I began as a heroine and remained one for 30 years.” The 77-year-old actress has worked in over 200 films, having started her film career at the young age of 15. “I was only 15-years-old when I got my first break in the film PUTTILLU in 1952. I used to take part in school dramas and plays, I used to enjoy being on the stage. It was during one stage performance —Maa Bhoomi, that Mr. Raja Rao Garikapati saw me. He wanted to introduce a new talent in the industry and was searching for a heroine for his next film. When he saw me on the dais, he was impressed
by me. He immediately connected with my father and called us to meet him. I still recall when we went to meet him I was without any make-up, and was dressed up simply. He didn’t even take any look test or voice test and signed me for his film PUTTILLU,” she explains, adding further, “My mother and father always encouraged my talent and hence they never stopped me from being an actor. They were very supportive.” Support was something that Jamuna had in abundance. Not only from her parents but also from her husband, Professor Juluri Ramana Rao, who encouraged her to carry on with her work and Jamuna continued to perform on-screen post marriage too. “All credit goes to my husband,” Jamuna declares proudly. She adds, “I think I am the second lady from the industry to marry someone from outside the industry. Padmini was the first one; she
got married to a doctor. I was brought up in a traditional, conservative family and my marriage was arranged. My mother was a very strict woman, she told me that after marriage it would be my husband’s decision whether I should continue working in the film industry or not. So after marriage I asked my husband if he was okay with me working and if not I would quit. I still remember his encouraging words, ‘Don’t! You are very talented and this is God’s gift that you have. Not every person can become

“After marriage I asked my husband if he was okay with me working and if not I would quit. He told me, ‘Don’t! You are very talented and this is God’s gift that you have. Not every person can become an artiste, only selected few get that opportunity. So I will not expect you to leave what you love doing. “ an artiste, only selected few get that opportunity. So I will not expect you to leave what you love doing. But, yes, whenever you get tired of it, when you get bored of doing what you are doing you can quit. But till then continue to act’.” Jamuna smiles at the memory. She further adds, “So it was his support that I could continue to work after marriage too. However, I ensured that I did not work late nights. I told my directors that I would not work after 6.pm, which gave me enough time to be with my family as well.” Having worked with the best talents from the south film industry as well as Bollywood, one wonders what are the life’s lessons she learnt throughout her journey as an actress? “Perhaps, to be humble,” she says after a thoughtful pause, “All the love that people bestow upon you as an actor,

all the awards and felicitations, affection… it only makes you humble, it makes you count your blessings. I worked with some of the biggest stars like N T Rama Rao, Sivaji Ganeshan, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, S. V. Ranga Rao… In Hindi films I worked with Rajendra Kumar, Meena Kumari, Raj Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Raj Kumar, I even acted with Prithviraj Kapoor in a Kannada film where he played an uncle. So I have worked with many legends and I learnt a lot from each one of them. Not only in terms of my craft but also the way they behaved
Does she miss being in front of the camera? “No,” comes the prompt reply from the septuagenarian. “Because you see I did get to essay some beautiful characters. I have done a variety of characters in 30 years of my career, so I don’t miss being in front of the camera. I did all I could and gave it my best shot. Then I got involved with social work,” she says with a contented smile. She elaborates, “I established Telugu artist association and have done social service through it for the last 25 years. Indira Gandhi was much impressed with my social contributions and she asked me to join politics. I was never interested in politics but when she called, I could not refuse and I joined the Congress party. Rajeev Gandhi recognised my services and offered me a parliamentary seat. I contested and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rajahmundry constituency. So I didn’t miss anything in my life. I lived my life to the fullest as an actress, I lived my family life to the fullest, as a social worker and a politician I contributed towards the county and till now I am very active. I have had so many good things in my career—so many national awards, love from my fans and an array of diverse characters, which till date are remembered. I have had a good life, God has given me a good husband, good children and now fantastic grandchildren. Life could not have been any less beautiful,” she sums up with a brightest and broadest smile.

Your Forecast For The Month Of August By Poonam Sethi Aries
Cancer
Libra
Capricorn
You will accomplish most of your goals and emerge into a new plateau of potentiality, yet you will know that this is only the first step and there’s much more ahead to be achieved. You are going to receive some money for ‘work-welldone,’ and will have enough to spare for pleasurable pursuits, products, or gifts. An old flame or romantic interest will re-enter your life, but you may still be strangers. There will be checkups, tests, or health-related problems on the horizon, but all will end well. Lucky number: 4 Lucky colour: Pink
You are going to receive a positive sign or omen of what is to come. Some new information concerning your work or a ‘working product’ will change your perspective and cause you to look at things in a much brighter light. You will begin to feel more secure as money starts to come in or free up. You are going to meet or be attracted to a very unusual/striking person, who will be just as interested in you. A spiritual cleansing would be very good for you and if you have been ailing, you will soon experience better health. If contemplating a health profession, it should be very rewarding. Lucky number: 8 Lucky colour: Yellow
Activity in your work will be renewed. Expect a positive flow of creative, innovative, or inspired ideas and lots of praise or admiration. You will forge ahead in spite of money worries and will begin a new project (or two) that will supplement your income or defray some of your expenses. This could also indicate a pleasant financial surprise and a decision to buy something you could not afford before. You are going to have a surprise call from an admirer, but not necessarily, the one you want to hear from or are attracted to. You will be in excellent condition, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Lucky number: 4 Lucky colour: Purple
Business and finance will take first place and improve, ideas for self-promotion will begin to formulate, and (phone) orders or calls for work will increase. You are going to acquire money through new or repeat business contacts, but will want to make more. You will be easily irritated, explosive, or impatient, but that will change because a new vision or romantic opportunity will inspire more confidence or optimism. You will be watching your health or diet, but may be suffering from tension, headaches, or lower backache. You could also begin a new treatment or exercise regimen. Lucky number: 3 Lucky colour: Sea green
Taurus
Leo
Scorpio
Aquarius
Results may be slow in coming, but you will hold your own, get a lot accomplished, and summon up enough energy to do what it takes to get the job done. In some way, you will be recognized or rewarded for your efforts. Financial troubles will be handled effectively—money that was held up, promised, or expected will arrive and all debts will be paid. You will not be ready to get involved in a new relationship; this could be because of an emotional attachment to the past. Your energy will be dynamic, and if there should be a problem, you will have the strength to overcome it. No physical disability or handicap will keep you down. Lucky number: 5 Lucky colour: Black
You will experience temporary blocks to your progress with nothing really going on, or you may be unemployed at present. However, things will improve considerably and you will have more work than you can handle (or want). You are going to acquire money from more than one source. This could also indicate a tax refund or interest gained on an account. Your in-laws will be a burden you will not want to deal with, or a separation in the family will cause unhappiness. You will be recuperating from an illness, injury, or infection and should slow down and take it easy. Also, if you are seeing a doctor, you may have to switch to another. Lucky number: 1 Lucky colour: Blue
There will be correspondence connected with your work that will involve mail, phone calls, or special application. Money matters will be in a state of ‘delicate’ balance, but prospects look as if they are improving, and you will enjoy spending money on others, and may pick up someone’s tab or he/she will pick up yours. Emotions will rock the ocean in a very unusual love affair. You will be subjected to erratic eating or sleeping habits and/or sexual preferences. However, if you have been ill, you will soon recover. Lucky number: 2 Lucky colour: Orange
You will begin a new enterprise, which will afford you the opportunity to work with or teach the public on a grander scale. If you have been thinking about leaving your current job or taking a leave of absence, in time you will. A decision concerning your career and finances will be made soon, and if you have been expecting some money, it will arrive. You will have mixed emotions regarding another, who will want more than you are ready to give or commit to. Part of you will want to enter the relationship with complete abandon, while another part will hold it at bay. You will feel as though you are not running at your peak ability. You may also speak with someone in the healing arts or visit a friend in the hospital. Lucky number: 2 Lucky colour: Green
Gemini
Virgo
Sagittarius
Pisces
A business partner or an associate will upset or irritate you. Steer clear! You cannot win anyway. At times, you will feel very self-conscious and will want to run and hide, but at other times, you will meet issues head on. You will also become extremely angry easily. Your income will come in chunks, not in small, stretched out amounts and you will do better than you thought. You are going to be disappointed, as plans to unite with the one you want to see or be with will fail or be cancelled, at least for now. You will feel tense, anxious and subject to muscle aches, neck or backache, and general physical discomfort, and/or sex with your partner will be un-rewarding. Lucky number: 9 Lucky colour: White
You will succeed in work that’s done behind the scenes and in any self-help or self-discovery area. Your success will come through your ability to take decisive action, solve problems, and get positive responses or assistance from others. You will want to get on with your work but will be feeling boxed in because some basic need or element must first be fulfilled. You will be grateful for money received from your work. You can afford to buy whatever you want or need (within reasons, of course). You are going to receive a calm answer in an emotional storm, and get a call from an admirer. You will be very impressionable and may experience an emotional drain as a result. Problems with your feet, knees, or legs could also be indicated. Lucky number: 7 Lucky colour: Sky blue
You may have run up against unforeseen obstacles in the past, but you will soon find a better opportunity. Something more aligned with what you want or through a different source than that which was previously established. Someone will forget or neglect to pay or mail money that is owed to you, but on the whole your financial position will be stable. Romance will enter your life, but the relationship will not get off the ground because you want an elevated love and will not settle for less. You will sacrifice love altogether rather than have a relationship that is not right. You will experience chest pains, shortness of breath, or respiratory problems. Lucky number: 3 Lucky colour: Grey
At this moment, you may feel that there is nothing you can do that will lift you out of the slump you are in. However, someone or something is going to come to your aid and brighten up your spirits. Money will be slow in coming, and not as much as you hoped for, and you will have conflicts with others or worry about what you should do. However, there will be unexpected financial gains soon. ‘How do I handle this?’ will be the issue concerning a romantic interest, and because you will meet it with a sense of responsibility for your actions, you will feel very good about yourself, whether your relationship has a future or not. You may experience choking sensations, backache, or problems with your stomach, ears, or throat. Lucky number: 6 Lucky colour: Red

Feedback Hello Readers, In April 2014, I had planned a month-long trip to Bangalore and was looking for available flights for the same. While checking the flights on internet, I noticed a new airlines name, which I had never heard of before. The flight listing included a newly started regional carrier – Air Costa. I googled Air Costa and found some very different features in their service as compared to other carriers. After opting for my desired date—15th May, I booked one seat for myself. On the day of departure, I reached the airport on time and passed through all the formalities of check-in. (I was having a bag for check-in which weighed around 16 kg, I was worried as only 15 kg is usually allowed but Air Costa is an exceptional case, they allow 20 kg baggage for check-in.) I will not further share any Air Costa experience of this journey as I think one flight of less than two hours is not enough for judging. Therefore, I booked my return ticket too, with the same airlines. 35 days later, after all the check-in procedures, I found myself inside the big metal tube, which was ready to carry me to Jaipur. I searched for the 26th row and then jumped on my pre-selected window seat. Unlike all other airline carriers’ fleets, Air Costa’s fleets do not have the Middle Seat. It was an Embraer 190 aircraft with 2x2 seat alignment. A Cabin crew member was announcing some stuff and I heard him announcing one more unexpected thing. He
said the journey from Bangalore to Jaipur would be of 1 hour and 50 minutes. (Seriously? The usual scheduled journey from Bangalore to Jaipur is of 2 hour and 20 minutes.) Journey with Air Costa is comfortable as they do not have middle seats and there is enough comfortable space even after one reclines the seat. Soon we were landing at Jaipur airport and I must say that was the best landing, I experienced at Jaipur. Runway of Jaipur airport is not a classy one. 70% is constructed with bitumen while remaining 25% is of large cement blocks, which makes landing a scary experience. We were assisted till the terminal by the Air Costa staff and I was left there with some good memories of the journey. It was really a good flying experience with Air Costa. Jaipur is the only city in North India where this South Indian regional carrier is operating. Air Costa started its operations with second tier cities and kept their fare low, which is building strong roots for them. I will never opt for any other carrier if I can fit my journey through Air Costa. I ask all the Jaipur-ites to check the service of Air Costa for their next possible trip. The Four Dragons (Asian Folktale)
O
nce upon a time, there were no rivers and lakes on earth, but only the Eastern Sea, in which lived four dragons: the Long Dragon, the Yellow Dragon, the Black Dragon and the Pearl Dragon. One day the four dragons flew from the sea into the sky. They soared and played hide-and-seek in the clouds. “Come over here quickly!” the Pearl Dragon cried out suddenly. “What’s happened?” asked the other three. Pearl Dragon pointed towards earth and they saw many people praying. A woman, kneeling on the ground with a thin boy on her back, murmured, “Please send rain quickly god, to give our children food.” There had been no rain for a long time, the crops had withered, and the fields had cracked under the scorching sun. The Yellow Dragon said, “They will die if it doesn’t rain soon.” The Long Dragon nodded and suggested, “Let’s go and plead to the Jade Emperor for rain.” So saying, he leapt into the clouds. The others followed and flew towards the Heavenly Palace. Being in charge of all the affairs in heaven, on earth and in the sea, the Jade Emperor was very powerful. He was not pleased to see the dragons. “Why do you come here instead of staying in the sea and behaving yourselves?” The Long Dragon stepped forward and said, “The crops on earth are withering, Your Majesty. I beg you to send rain down quickly!” “All right. I’ll send some rain down tomorrow.” The Jade Emperor pretended to agree. The four dragons responded, “Thank you, Your Majesty!”
The four dragons went back happily. But ten days passed, and it did not rain. The people suffered more, some eating bark, some grass. Seeing all this, the four dragons felt very sorry, for they knew the Jade Emperor only cared about pleasures, and not the people. They could only rely on themselves to help the people. But how to do it? Seeing the vast sea, the Long Dragon said that he had an idea. “What is it?” the other three demanded. “Look, There is plenty of water in the sea. We should scoop it up and spray it towards the sky. The water will be like rain drops and come down to save the people and their crops,” said the Long Dragon. “Good idea!” agreed the others. “But,” said the Long Dragon after thinking a bit, “we will be blamed if the Jade Emperor learns of this.” “I will do anything to save the people,” the Yellow Dragon said resolutely. “Then let’s begin. We will never regret it,” said the Long Dragon. They flew to the sea, scooped up water in their mouths, and then flew back into the sky, where they sprayed the water out over the earth. The four dragons flew back and forth, making the sky dark all around. Before long, the seawater became rain pouring down from the sky. “It’s raining!” the people cried and leaped with joy. On the ground the wheat stalks raised their heads. The god of the sea discovered this and reported it to the Jade Emperor. “How dare the four dragons bring rain without my permission!” said the Jade Emperor. He was enraged, and ordered the heavenly generals to arrest the four dragons. The four dragons were arrested and brought to the Heavenly Palace. “Go and get four mountains to lay upon them so that they can never escape!” The Jade Emperor ordered the Mountain God. The Mountain God used his power to make four mountains fly and pressed them down upon the four dragons. Imprisoned as they were, they never regretted their actions. Determined to do good for the people forever, they turned themselves into four rivers, which flowed past high mountains and deep valleys, crossing the land from the west to the east and finally emptying into the sea. And so China’s four great rivers were formed — the Heilongjian (Black Dragon) in the far north, the Huanghe (Yellow River) in central China, the Changjiang (Yangtze, or Long River) farther south, and the Zhujiang (Pearl) in the very far south.

A little boy was afraid of the dark. One night • his mother told him to go out to the back porch
A Sunday school teacher asked the children just • before she dismissed them to go to church, “and
and bring her the broom. The little boy turned to his mother and said, “Mama, I don’t want to go out there. It’s dark.” The mother smiled reassuringly at her son. “You don’t have to be afraid of the dark,” she explained. “God is out there. He’ll look after you and protect you.” The little boy looked at his mother real hard and asked, “Are you sure he’s out there?” “Yes, I’m sure. He is everywhere, and he is always ready to help you when you need him,” she said. The little boy thought about that for a minute and then went to the back door and cracked it a little. Peering out into the darkness, he called, “God? If you’re out there, would you please hand me the broom?”
why is it necessary to be quiet in church?” Little Johnny replied, “Because we must not disturb people while sleeping.”
