The ground floor has been divided into two areas, an outdoor area to facilitate an al fresco style seating open to the sky, in addition to which the rest of the area shall act as the main bar and dining area.
Gangsta’s – Café and Bar, Mumbai’s newest hot spot A pulsating underground restobar with a nonchalant cool-meets-bold quotient to it, Gangsta’s – Café and Bar is the latest spot in suburban Mumbai that promises great Indo-Mediterranean food and an even greater ambience. The intermingling of old carved rustic walls with mafia inspired quotes along with rugged art installations of metal chain chandeliers give it a grungy, almost bordering on scruffy ghetto vibe. But elements like the VIP and fine dining section called “Boss’s” on the second level elevate it many notches higher, both literally and otherwise! Mediterranean dishes like the pizza-esque laffa taftoon, the delightful Syrian couscous, and the mantar dolmasi are blithe companions to their Indian counterparts like the mustard-redolent sarso mahi tikka and the dahi ke kebab. Quirky cocktails like the “bull homage-paying” trio of the
sexy bull, bull on the beach and Long Island ice bull pack a mighty punch, while other foodie innovations like the panko crusted fried camembert with raspberry and the blini topped with egg, caviar and cheese wow you silent.

THE ITINERARY
Closer to Heaven...
The Temple of Kapila Theertham is the only temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in over a 50 mile radius of Tirupati and Tirumala that abound with Vaishnavait temples. This huge temple stands at the entrance to a mountain cave in one of the steep and vertical faces at the foot of the amazing hills of Tirumala, where the waters of the mountain stream Paapa Vinasanam cascade as a huge waterfall. Located in the heart of Tirumala, the S.V. Museum, also known as Sri Venkateshwara Museum, is housed in a beautiful temple complex. Besides being a wonderful repository of historical artefacts, such as ancient weaponry, pooja items and idols, the museum also boasts of a meditation centre for people looking for tranquillity and peace.
Huzur Office Road is not just famous for its genuine, handcrafted textiles, but is also a platform for local weavers to flourish and sustain the craft of hand-weaving. Speaking of weaving, the villages near Tirupati—particularly Ekambrakuppam and Narayanavanam (around 48 kms away)—are famous for the weaving and exporting of cotton dress materials.

There is no doubt that the number one trump card of Tirupati is its vast array of temples to pay obeisance at. And the most prominent and venerated of them all is the Venkateswara Swamy Temple located about 20 kms North West of Tirupati in the Tirumala hills at an elevation of 853 metres. The temple is on Venkatadri, the seventh peak of the Tirumala hills, and is also known as the ‘Temple

of Seven Hills’. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Venkateswara (also known as Lord Balaji), an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the temple has the distinction of being the most-visited place of worship in the world. The temple is visited by about 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims daily (30 to 40 million people annually on average), while on special occasions and festivals, like the annual Brahmotsavam, the
number of pilgrims shoots up to 500,000! The other popular temples here are the Sri Kodandaramaswamy Temple that is dedicated to Sri Rama, the Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple and the Sri Kapileswaraswami temple located at about 3 km from Tirupati Railway station.
While it may not have the huge malls of Hyderabad or the silk saree shops of Chennai, shopping for idols and home temple artefacts is definitely big business in Tirupati. The Lepakshi Emporium in Tirumala is a treasure trove of localy made handicrafts like statues, lamps, Tanjore paintings and other religious ornaments and decorative elements. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD—the administrating body of the temple) shop is a great place to pick up books and periodicals based on the Hindu religion. They also stock CDs and cassettes of the Vedas, Sanskritanas and Pravachanams. The APCO Handloom House on Old

But make sure you get yours from the Venkateswara Swamy Temple itself. In fact, TTD is planning to patent the Tirupati laddoo to stop counterfeit versions that are available all over the holy city.
Although it’s considered auspicious to eat at the temple, there are many eateries located all over Tirupati and Tirumala. In the temples, food is served on banana leaves and a variety is available with the most popular being the ‘sweet rice’. Other than that, there are many stalls and restaurants offering strictly vegetarian Andhra and other South Indian cuisines. Some of the popular restaurants in Tirupati include: Manasa Restaurant, Palace Café, Pongali Restaurant, Andhra Spice, Sindhu Fast Food Center and Deepam Food Plaza. And for those who wish to brave the serpentine queues, the reward at the end are great tasting wholesome meals that are provided free of cost to all devotees at the TTD’s Annadanam Complex near the temple from 9.00am to 11.00pm every day. There is no dearth of good quality accommodation in Tirupati. Hotels like Grand World, Kalyan Residency, Sindhuri Park Hotel and PLR Grand offer comfortable rooms along with facilities like laundry and internet. Alternately, the folks at TTD have made it their mission to ensure that comfortable accommodation is provided to pilgrims at a reasonable cost. It has constructed over 7,512 cottages and guest houses in both at Tirupati and Tirumala. Besides these, there are also several large choultries with free rooms for families to stay in reasonable comfort provided by TTD. Electricity and water are provided free of charge. For free accommodation, pilgrims may contact the Central Reception Office, near the bus stand in Tirumala.

REARMING HINDUISM
THE LINCOLN MYTH
Rearming Hinduism is a handbook for intellectual resistance. Through an astute and devastating critique of ‘Hinduphobia’ in today’s academia, media and popular culture, Vamsee Juluri shows us that what the Hinduphobic worldview denies virulently is not only the truth and elegance of Hindu thought, but the very integrity and sanctity of the natural world itself. By boldly challenging some of the media age’s most popular beliefs about nature, history, and pre-history along with the usual Hinduphobic myths about Aryans, invasions, and blood-sacrifices, Rearming Hinduism links Hinduphobia and its hubris to a predatory and selfdestructive culture that perhaps only a renewed Hindu sensibility can effectively oppose. September 1861: All is not as it seems. With these cryptic words, a shocking secret passed down from president to president comes to rest in the hands of Abraham Lincoln. The present: In Utah, the fabled remains of Mormon pioneers whose nineteenthcentury expedition across the desert met with a murderous end have been uncovered. In Denmark, a Justice Department agent, missing in action, has fallen into the hands of a dangerous zealot-a man driven by divine visions to make a prophet’s words reality. And in a matter of a few short hours, Cotton Malone has gone from quietly selling books at his shop in Denmark to dodging bullets in a high-speed boat chase. By Sarah Waters Acclaimed bestselling novelist Kunihiko Hidaka is brutally murdered in his home on the night before he’s planning to leave Japan and relocate to Vancouver. His body is found in his office, in a locked room, within his locked house, by his wife and his best friend, both of whom have rock solid alibis. Or so it seems. Police Detective Kyochiro Kaga recognizes Hidaka’s best friend from years ago when they were both teachers. In a brilliantly realized tale of cat and mouse, the detective and the writer battle over the truth of the past and how events that led to the murder really unfolded. Which one of the two writers was ultimately guilty of malice? Published by Hachette India (Little Brown imprint); R350
It is 1922, and London is tense. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa, a large silent house now bereft of brothers, husband and even servants, life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers. For with the arrival of Lilian and Leonard Barber, a modern young couple of the ‘clerk class’, the routines of the house will be shaken up in unexpected ways. And as passions mount and frustration gathers, no one can foresee just how far-reaching, and how devastating, the disturbances will be. FURTURISTIC Depicting the trends and silhouettes for the years to come, designers are beginning to explore their creativity and construct garments for the future. Structured ensembles take center stage with unique textures and fabrics that are edgy, yet formal. Varying from dresses to coats and gowns to trousers, Fall/Winter 2014 has seen it all. Showcasing the future sensibilities
designers like Amit Aggarwal, Asa Kazingmei and Anuj Sharma among many others mixed unique cosmic prints with metallic hues and tulle to bring out the sci-fi styled garments that included exaggerated shoulders, mesh capes, high necks and draped pants. Enhancing each look were oversized accessories like headgears, ear and hand cuffs with broad necklaces from designers like Outhouse and Suhani Pittie.
The dhoti suit seems to be the past-meets-future leitmotif in festive menswear this season. If we had the rust brown bandhgala with a cobalt blue piped collar, by SVA collection then designer Anju Modi upped the ante with her interpretation of the dhoti suit that saw a baroque style gold embroidered slate grey jacket and waistcoat combo teamed with a matching grey gold bordered dhoti worn with tan coloured brogues
beach or a casual day out. On the other hand for the men who are courageous to try the bold styles, Aarti Vijay Gupta and Anita Dongre have experimented with printed straight fit trousers and draped pants. HAPPY FLYING! / DECEMBER 2014

PRINTS GALORE Bringing the digital age to the fore, this season, we saw the love for prints blooming in abundance. Splashing the runway with various prints and patterns, designers embraced this grand graphic mash up with a mélange of colours. Silhouettes like cigarette pants, gowns, straight dresses, jumpsuits and even
sarees were seen with prints inspired from nature, Indian miniature paintings and abstract motifs. Showing us how to accentuate different parts of the body, smaller prints were placed cleverly on each outfit. And for the ones who love to make a statement, designers like Dhruv Kapoor, Kristy de Cunha, Yogesh Choudhary and Kallol Datta
used their print patterns all over. As for menswear, prints can be seen in this hitherto ignored segment as well and with a vengeance, might we just add… From the Jackson Pollock-esque whimsical paint splattered prints on suits by Issey Miyake to the geometric prints of SVA and Comme des Garçons, its prints all the way!
FROM PASTEL TO CAMEL This season designers have decided to flaunt the monotone trend with subtle pastel and camel tones. Epitomising timeless elegance this colour trend has created a dominant position in defining the menswear range. The catwalks have seen a variety of silhouettes ranging from traditional wear to western

wear from designers like Shantanu and Nikhil, Anuj Bhutani and Krishna Mehta as well as accessories. Embracing these tones the fashion forecasters have shown how one can easily incorporate them in their daily wear as well as occasions. Making a sophisticated statement one can also pair them with unique prints and colours.
Apart from being a fashion witer with Happy Flying, Miloni Shah is also creatively inclined towards styling and is the co-founder of an Indian couture brand as well. HAPPY FLYING! / DECEMBER 2014

The Nomads...
They may travel a lot for work, but it is those personal, intimate getaways that these Bollywood stars crave, as Shubarna Mukerji Shu finds out. Lisa Haydon “I am a beach bum, somehow it might have to do with the place I have been born and brought up. I relate to water. You could call it my Australian-South Indian genes but it is a fact that I like Mumbai because of its beaches. Of course, I don’t go swimming here, but knowing that the sea is close, keeps me happy. Broadly, people are supposed to like either mountains or beaches right? For me, it’s not like I hate the other. I love the beauty of nature, I guess. Somehow, nature in all its glory seems to shower unconditional love on one and all.”

Shahid Kapoor “For us actors, it is frankly very difficult to get up and go outside and have a holiday, in the true sense of the term, in India. For us, it becomes imperative that we go outside India to holiday because you want to let go and not be reported about in the tabloids - before you let your imagination go wild, even if we are not wearing coordinated ensembles or making the right fashion statement on a holiday, it can be held against us. So it is best to do it away from the media glare. I have never had a problem with that, we get to see a lot of beautiful places, but when you look around India you notice there is so much beauty right here… While shooting for Haider, we got to see Kashmir the way perhaps not many people of my generation have seen it. It is raw, harsh but very therapeutic. I remember there was this one day when the traffic was disrupted and nothing was moving, so I decided to just get out of the car and walk back to the hotel, I just didn’t see the sense of being holed up. I put on my music and just walked. The way I connected with Kashmir, its snow… its moods... I don’t think I will ever forget.”

Nargis Fakhri “For a very long time my only dream was to get out of the place where I was staying. I didn’t know where I wanted to go, what I wanted to do after I got out, but I just needed to get out. Somewhere in the process of getting out of Queens, I realised I had the whole world ahead of me. Thankfully, the kind of profession I was in, travel was pretty much a part of it all. I kept seeing new places, meeting new people… Since I didn’t really have a work-schedule I kind of got used to packing my bag and taking off. There was a time I decided, I would just close my eyes and point somewhere on the globe and go where it
60
DECEMBER 2014 / HAPPY FLYING!
took me. That’s how I first reached New Zealand! Somehow I always end up talking about this place because it left me feeling untouched and alive over again. I guess it is the air or the fact that there are more cattle there than people, I don’t know what pulled me there. Today life is a lot more scheduled, I don’t have that free will to just disappear at whim, maybe part of me misses that freedom. It is obviously a fact that a job of an actress has totally sapped all the pleasure from travelling… but I wish one day I could go back to being able to just point a finger on the globe and take off.”
Advt. Rahul Bose ”We live in a concrete jungle, so it is of course required to stretch your limits. My travel is related to work and my sports. I am very inclined towards adventure sports. It often takes me to some obscure places of the world and, believe me, it is when you are pitted against nature be it on a boat or on a rope, that you know just where you stand in life. It is amazing the thrill when you just get out of it alive! With your adrenaline
pumping through your veins, it is an exhilarating experience. I mostly travel with my group of friends, people I have met during work and some of my team members (Bose plays rugby) but what is amazing is through the years of travelling and meeting people from all walks of life, I have also managed to keep in touch with some people whom I have met on journeys. I think that really makes for good friendship, bonding over nature!”
Welcome to GardenWorld —The Growing Wonders!! You have reached the best landscape company in India! We are a dedicated team of passionate and qualified persons, consisting of landscape architects, designers, manufacturers and maintenance staff and are able to give to you the designs you can only dream of, thus making them a reality!!
Isha Sharvani “I am a restless soul and somehow, staying in one place for too long isn’t something I can do. While taking off with friends is something everyone likes, I too enjoy it but somehow, once in a while I just like to go away, all alone. I really like landing up in a place which I have not studied, struggling to converse with people, trying different cuisines. Frankly, when you step out in the world and
meet new people you realise that everyone actually just wants to welcome you, give you memories to take back and hoping they will be remembered. I love that experience. Though being a girl, my options are not too wild and pretty much limited to easily accessible places, I love to go on treks alone. Somehow it gives me time to retrospect and, in knowing other random people, I realise I am getting to know myself better. Isn’t that something?”
We are the “Growing” Dream Merchants! Our concern is about bringing back a choice of fast disappearing native and indigenous plants. Someone’s unkind comments may cut like a sharp-edged weapon. You may not be satisfied with the new set up at your work station, but there is little you can do about it. Interest and eagerness may have to be shown, if you want to remain on the right side of a superior. You will need to be levelheaded, where finances are concerned to cater for the rainy day. Those unlucky in love should not lose heart, as some positive indications appear!

Trivia Time!!
(Translated by George Fyler Townsend)
The hottest continent on earth is Africa, where a record high of 136.4 degrees F was once recorded.
The Raven and the Swan A raven saw a swan and desired to secure for himself the same beautiful plumage. Supposing that the swan’s splendid white colour arose from his washing in the water in which he swam, the raven left the altars in the neighbourhood where he picked up his living, and took up residence in the lakes and pools. But cleansing his feathers as often as he would, he could not change their colour, while through want of food he perished. Lesson: Change of habit cannot alter nature.
The Sick Lion A lion, unable from old age and infirmities to provide himself with food by force, resolved to do so by artifice. He returned to his den, and lying down there, pretended to be sick, taking care that his sickness should be publicly known. The beasts expressed their sorrow, and came one by one to his den, where the lion devoured them. After many of the beasts had thus disappeared, the fox discovered the trick and presenting himself to the lion, stood on the outside of the cave, at a respectful distance, and asked him how he was. “I am very ill,” replied the lion, “but why do you stand there and speak? Pray enter within to talk with me.” “No, thank you,” said the fox. “I notice that there are many prints of feet entering your cave, but I see no trace of any returning.” Lesson: He is wise who is warned by the misfortunes of others.
The Bees and the Honey-Pot A number of bees were attracted to a jar of honey which had been overturned in a housekeeper’s room, and placing their feet in it, ate greedily. Their feet, however, became so smeared with the honey that they could not use their wings, nor release themselves, and were suffocated. Just as they were expiring, they exclaimed, “O foolish creatures that we are, for the sake of a little pleasure we have destroyed ourselves.” Lesson: Pleasure bought with pains, hurts.

The longest bout of hiccups lasted 69 years! The Amazon rain forest supplies one-fifth of the world’s oxygen! Australia is the only continent on earth without an active volcano. American baseball legend Babe Ruth kept a cabbage leaf under his cap to keep cool.
The longest recorded flight of a chicken is thirteen seconds.
Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting his whole life and that was to his brother!

Feedback Dear Air Costa Management & Team, For the first time today I boarded the Air Costa Flight LB673 from Hyderabad to Bangalore along with my dear wife and mom who is 86 years young! From the very beginning—at the entrance of Gate 1 of the Hyderabad Airport itself—the ever-smiling Air Costa staff came with a wheelchair to pick up my mother from our car itself (a first time experience, despite my mom flying with various airlines to Chennai and Bangalore for almost for a decade!!!). Wow 1. At the check-in counter, the staff was so kind in following the quickest mode of issuing our boarding cards with seat Numbers: 18A,18C and 18D and waiving off our excess baggage fee to the maximum possible discount (since we happen to be international passengers flying to the US on the 2nd of December). Wow 2. Right from the check-in counter till the boarding of our aircraft, my mom was taken care of very well! Wow 3. The aircraft departed 10 minutes ahead of schedule and the whole flying experience was so amazing and arrived 10 minutes before time. Wow 4. Throughout the flying duration, my mom was very well taken care of by the beautiful and affectionate Air Costa crew members! Wow 5. I was excited to see my wife enjoying her first Air Costa flight. She was so delighted that she told the captain in command of our today’s flight that this was one of the best and finest landing experiences! Wow 6. The pilot got so delighted that he told us that we should take more and more Air Costa flights within India, to which I replied that we will fly only with Air Costa from now onwards and will soon become frequent travellers of Air Costa! Wow 7. I had the opportunity to go through your Air Costa’s in-flight magazine and got some firsthand information about the Founder and Executive Chairman Shri. Lingamaneni Poorna Bhaskara Rao Garu and his two sons, Shri. Rajasekhar Garu and Shri. Ramesh Garu, who is also the chairman of Air Costa. I was so delighted when I came to know about Air Costa’s charity initiatives on the occasion of its First Anniversary... Kudos Air Costa—you really rock! Valuing human beings is the highest value indeed. We are carrying with us today so many “Wows” for a delightful experience. Thank you Air Costa once again for understanding our inner child... I find no words in my vocabulary to praise Air Costa any further now. Also thanks to the very heavy Bangalore traffic which gave me the time and pleasure to mention something very interesting about our Air Costa experience today! Our special appreciation may please be conveyed to all the crew members of today’s Air Costa Flight LB673 from Hyderabad to Bangalore. God bless Air Costa. Cheers, Raghuraman Dandapani & Family Managing Director, Richmond Group India

Fly into a “HAPPY LIFESTYLE” Smile Please! Dr. M. C. Das
“A smile is happiness you will find right under your nose” -Tom Wilson Of the 8.7 million visible species on earth, only human beings are endowed with the rare trait of a “Smile”. It is an expression denoting pleasure, sociability, happiness and amusement. In animals, the exposure of teeth, which may bear a resemblance to a smile and imply happiness, often, conveys other signals. The baring of teeth is often used as a threat or warning display, known as snarl, or a sign of submission. A smile is understood by everyone, regardless of culture, race or religion. It is a global phenomenon! A smile is a good exercise for the face and it makes the body secrete endorphins which develop immunity for the body. A smile is a tool to win friends and influence people. Smiling faces are always welcome in society and frowning faces are abhorred. A smile costs nothing, but pays more! A smile makes a family happy, neighbours friendly and a work place pleasant. Start your day with smile and end with a smile and see the difference. A smile spreads happiness and brings joy—both to the giver and the receiver. Just try it with your fellow passenger!
