Hermes’ White Field of Flowers!

Known for their display of innovation, Hermes the French luxury house brings an array of timepieces every season that are inspired from various forms of art. Within its Arceau Millefiori models, Hermes marries two unusual encounters—watchmaking and glassmaking. The designer, Cristalleries Royales was inspired by the beautiful nineteenth-century paperweights seen in Saint-Louis that produced crystal canes that were cut into small portions which revealed the final pattern. The glasswork sections are then placed vertically in a cast iron bowl where they form a bed of flowers or a millefiori—a thousand flowers in Italian. This time piece has small marguerite blooms in a pink field which is brought to life by the mechanical calibers and the diamond studded bezel. Available in two colours and one pocket watch model, the leather straps are co-ordinated with the dial which leaves a whimsical vibe.

An Evolution by Fendi

Back in time, Silvia Fendi was inspired by the 90’s minimalistic trends which lead to the creation of the Baguette Bag. After two decades, Fendi decided to revamp the tasteful bag and give it a contemporary structured look with a modern twist calling it the 3Baguette. This classic name is derived from the new features that the silhouette carries—an adjustable strap that makes it easier to carry it as a cross body bag, across the shoulder or as a pochette. Making the bag functional and convenient to use, the iconic FF buckle was transformed with an innovative technique which made the lock rotate and decompose in tiny scattered lines when the bag opens. Available in a variety of colours and embroidered fabrics, this bag is spacious and brings out a new meaning to timeless style!

Southern Jewel!

While Coimbatore might be the ‘Gateway to the Hills’, there is a lot to see and do in and around the Manchester of South India as it were.

Blessed with superb all-yearround weather, Coimbatore is often called the Manchester of South India, as the city is a major industrial hub of the country. It is known for its automobile spare parts manufacturing, engineering firms, textile industries, health care centers, schools, colleges, and of course, its beauty. Serving as an entry and exit point to neighbouring Kerala and the ever-popular hill station of Udhagamandalam (Ooty) and Kodaikanal, no wonder this city wears the moniker of the ‘Gateway to the Hills’ with great aplomb! But Coimbatore is an excellent South Indian tourism spot on its own, popularly known for its landscape dotted with divine

the Anaimalai Hills of Pollachi, Valparai and Udumalpet Taluks of the Coimbatore District is situated at an altitude of 1,400 metres above sea level, while the area of the sanctuary is 958 sq. kms. It has various kinds of exotic fauna like elephant, gaur, tiger, panther, sloth bear, pangolin, black headed oriole, green pigeon and civet cat. The Amaravathy Reservoir and dam in the Anamalais has a large number of crocodiles. There are also many places of scenic beauty around the sanctuary such as Karain Shola and Anaikunthi Shola. A must visit for all science history enthusiasts is the G. D. Naidu Museum. Built in honour of G. D. Naidu who is also referred to as the ‘Edison of India’, here one can see the history of industrialisation in Coimbatore. Also on display is an old motor bike which G. D. Naidu learnt to assemble from a British officer after which he got interested in engineering. The attached Germany Gift Shop is a great place from where one can buy interesting toys that are made in Germany.

SHOP shrines and temples like the beautiful Perur Pateeswarar Temple. Some of the major attractions of the Coimbatore District are Aliyar Dam, Monkey Falls, Siruvani Dam, Cholayar Dam, the Botanical Gardens, Horticulture Farms

and Vaitheki Falls. Perhaps the most iconic and stunning of all Coimbatore getaways is the Annamalai Wildlife Sanctuary or to use its formal name The Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary. This protected area located in

As scenic and beautiful as Coimbatore is, it would be untrue to call it a shopper’s paradise. The main shopping areas are R. S. Puram (D. B. Road and C. B. Road), Gandhipuram (Cross Cut Road) and Town Hall Area (Oppanakara St, Big Bazaar St, Raja St). You can definitely splurge on different types of South Indian silk sarees like Kanchipuram silk, Mysore Silk, etc. A visit to Coimbatore is incomplete without going to a few of the huge textile showrooms in the city notably Chennai Silks, Ganapathy Silks and Crocodile Gallery on Oppanakara Street, Mahaveers, Shree Devi Textiles and Trouser Town on Cross Cut Road, and Kalyan Silks on 100 Feet Road.

Other must-buy items from Coimbatore include banana chips, sambar and curry powders from Annapoorna, and the famous melt-in-themouth Mysurpak!

EAT Speaking of food; Coimbatore is an ideal stop if you want to take some rest while on the way to or from Ooty, Bengaluru or Kerala. From the best South Indian fare like idlis, dosas and vadas served with an array of yummy chutneys at the Annapoorna chain of vegetarian restaurants to the meaty excesses at places like Kovai Biriyani Hotel, Angannan’s, Anjappar, Sampoorna, Rayappas and Thalappas restaurants, this city will leave you satiated! Try Krishna Sweets too, the sweets chain has their origins in this town. But for a change of flavour, try the pure veg Rajasthani-Gujarati thalis at Khandani Rajdhani who’s Fun Republic Mall, Peelamedu branch is popular with both locals and visitors alike. An interesting fact about Coimbatore is its drinking water. The Siruvani water supplied to the city of Coimbatore from the Siruvani Waterfalls that is also known as Covai Kutralam is said to be one of the tastiest waters in the world, in fact the second tastiest. So, ditch that bottled mineral water and go au natural!

STAY There are a huge number of hotels, guesthouses and home stays in and around Coimbatore to suit all budgets. Some of the best options are; Le Méridien Coimbatore, Hotel City Tower, Kanimani lodge and Hotel Prince Gardens. Of late, a number of service apartments have sprung up in the city offering superb accommodation at a fraction of the cost of a traditional hotel. Guestlines Service Apartments, Dunag Springs Service Apartments and Hive Service Apartments are three such properties that come equipped with amenities like gyms, WiFi and in-house pantry services.

Situated at an altitude of 7,000 ft above sea level, Kodaikanal boasts of a man-made lake, which is the main attraction of the hill station; most of the tourist action is centered around the water body. Next morning, I decided to start the holiday with a morning walk around the lake, where I could soak in the beauty, silence and peace of the surroundings. I enquired and found out that one could hire a cycle and pedal around the lake. If not anything, you can just sip on hot tea and look at the blue sky and relax.

Golf Club. The club holds a number of tournaments every year. Cheese and chocolates The next day I found another way to relax—boating in the lake. I decided to hire a row boat and enjoy the lake. After the boat ride, I checked out the shopping. The best thing to take back home are the chocolates—almond rocks, raisin, white chocolate, bitter chocolates, that are so reasonably priced that you can buy tons. Only issue was that they melted once out of the cool weather of Kodai. Other must buy items are eculyptus oil, lemon grass oil, ginger or elaichi tea. Walking down the market road or the lake front, don’t forget to sample the cheese. Buy some world class cheese from the single cheese outlet called the Kodai Dairy

Brilliance all over Breathtaking beauty in nature is the hallmark of Kodai. All around you can

spot lilies, petunias, begonias, orchids and roses growing in wild splendour splashing the landscape with colours. With flowers growing in such abundance, most residents and hotels just cut them and use them in vases in most rooms. The sky is a clear blue, the mountains in shades of green and steep slopes, valleys add to the panoramic views. Cows and sheep graze on the meadows and grasslands that cover the hillsides. Gigantic eucalyptus trees and shola forests are a common sight. A couple of waterfalls flourish in the valleys and are a favourite among sightseeing tourists. As a sport, golf is very popular in Kodai. The golf club goes back to 1895, when a few golfers chanced upon the rolling grassland, where they set up the Kodaikanal

As for meals, I tried out the biryani at the Hill Top restaurant that dishes out large portions that are priced reasonably. The Bakery next to Hill Top is also a good bet for desserts.

Coaker’s Walk, 500 metres from the bus-stand, constructed by Lt.Coaker in 1872, is a one kilometre paved pedestrian path running along the edge of steep slopes on the southern side of Kodai. Bear Shola Falls, three kilometres from the bus-stand, is a tall waterfall in a reserve forest. The final approach to this quiet area is a gently climbing foot-path. How to get there? Fly in to Coimbatore with Air Costa. Hire a car for about R1,800 which takes you right into Kodaikanal. The drive takes about four hours. There are buses plying too from each of these places to Kodaikanal. The nearest railway station is Kodai Road. From Coimbatore to Kodaikanal there are 14 hairpin bends. So, watch out! Where to stay? The best place to live it up is at The Carlton, while there are also a few budget hotels away from the main market place. The Fairway Inn is a good place for a home stay.

Fujitsu A544 Lifebook (R33,590) The Lifebook A544 is an all matte-black 15.6-inch notebook clad entirely in plastic. This gaming laptop draws its juice from a 3.1 GHz 4th Generation Core i5- 4200M processor coupled with Intel HD graphics processor, thereby delivering a powerful performance every single time. With regards to design, the lid is easy to twist and the viewing angle stability is low but the build quality is decent along with a SD card reader that is housed on the front edge and looks hidden. The HD display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels is not as impressive because of the marginal viewing angle stability in conjunction with the low opening angle. Along with 4 GB DDR3 RAM in addition to 500 GB hard disk storage capacity, the Fujitsu LifeBook A544 definitely scores well owing to the Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000 Mbit), Intel Wireless-N7260 b/g/n LAN and Bluetooth v4.0, RJ45 LAN, HDMI port, VGA port and rightly placed USB ports. It also features a multi card slot that is compatible with SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. For a Core i5 processor, this laptop is priced just right so that it attracts both business as well as normal users. Thanks to the 6-cell battery, the laptop gives a strong battery backup of up to six hours.

Acer Aspire V5-572 (R24,500) This starter notebook from Acer is rightly named ‘Aspire’ just because it’s not only the cheapest one on the block but also it’s an ambitious product from Acer to attract all the ‘notebook virgins’ out there! The Acer V5-572 sports a third generation Intel Pentium dual core-2117U processor with a clock speed of 1.7 Ghz coupled with an Intel HD graphics processor for gamers. This 15.6 inch HD TFT LCD display with LED backlit (Acer CineCrystal Technology) has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixel and even with good brightness levels on the display, this value for money laptop gives a fabulous five hours of battery life easily. Other notable features include Acer Crystal Eye HD Webcam, Acer Zoom Perfect Touchpad with Two-finger Scroll and Pinch, three properly placed USB ports and its polar black colour. Therefore, for anyone who has waited so far for some inspiration to buy their first laptop, then Acer Aspire V5-572 is definitely here to inspire.

film music

Sounds of Bollywood

Rubina P. Banerjee takes a look at the emerging trends in Hindi film music, which are a true treat for the ears!

Indian Folk Tunes And Instruments: A 24-State Treasure Trove Today’s composers are stretching out to the far reaches of Indian folk music. It is no longer the Punjab’s bhangra or Bengal’s bhatiyali that makes its way into these magic mixes but bihu beats from Assam, lavni tunes from Maharashtra, purvi, kajri, chaitis from UP, baul and chatka from Bengal, kummiattam and thappattam beats from the south and, of course, the dandiya tunes of Gujarat and the jhoomar tunes of Rajasthan, to mention a few! And the songs…Take the raunchy ‘Bedardi raja…’ from Delhi Belly (Ram Sampath) with its harmonium and dhol fused with strident western beats adding to its seductive energy. Or the do tara introduction to the mellifluous ‘Monta re…’ (Amit Trivedi) with its santhal rhythm or the lavni folk song ‘Navrahi majhi…’ with its Marathi lyrics sung by both Sunidhi and Natali

Di Lucio to give it the Indian abroad flavour. Classical Raagas: Eons Of Heritage Raagas have been a favourite in Hindi film music from the times of Baiju Bawra, Mughal-e-Azam and Anarkali. In the 80s, Khayyam’s awardwinning music for Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan underlined the role of raagas in Indian film music. The tradition continues but has a great variety now drawing on light classical dhuns, teasing thumris, delectable dadras, all enhanced by the curious combination of contemporary music. The qawwali has come a long way from the ‘Parda hai parda hai…’ days of Amar Akbar Anthony. Amit Trivedi’s rocking qawwali ‘Jhalla walla…’ from Ishaqzaade gives it a seductive edge while Rahman’s ‘Piya Haji Ali…’ takes it to a new height of spirituality However, it is the sufiana HAPPY FLYING! / JANUARY 2015

trend that has caught the fancy of the audience by its sheer sublimity with songs like ‘Kun faya kun…’ (Rockstar), ‘Khwaja mera Khwaja…’ and the simple soulful ‘Iktara’ (Wake Up Sid) or the soulstirring ‘Mitwa’ (Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna)! Going West: Dipping Into Contemporary Western Trends The infusion of electronic beats in Bollywood music has been the trend of recent times and the audiences have embraced the beats and vibe of the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) scene as their own. Only a decade ago, there were very few soundtracks that featured House influenced sounds. From 2010, however almost every movie has some sort of song that incorporates aspects of electronic dance music. The song that introduced this trend was ‘Fanaa…’ (Yuva) by A.R. Rahman. While it did create some ripples, it wasn’t until later that this definitively electronic sound emerged. The soundtrack of Karthik Calling Karthik brought EDM to the ears of the masses. Voice Bank Part of the western influence includes using western voices like Snoop Dog in ‘Singh is king…’, Akon in ‘Chamak challo…’ and Kylie Minogue with her ‘Chiggy wiggy…’ (Blue)! The vast range of voices makes for interesting voice textures and ensures versatility of pitch range and dialect. (‘Lungi dance…’ Chennai Express), Benny Dayal (‘Badtameez dil…’ Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani), Papon (‘Maula sun le re…’ Madras Cafe), Ravindra Upadhyay ‘Ankhon mein sapna…’ Iqbal), Clinton Cerejo (‘Kaali kaali…’

Ek Thi Daayan), Harshdeep Kaur (‘Katiyan karoon…’ Rockstar) and so many more. Whacky Lyrics: HinglishVinglish To add to this heady mix are the whacky lyrics that film songs have today, which seem to boil over with laughter! Imagine Gulzar composing ‘Oye boy oye boy charlie tu dil ki baazi marli/ Oh my dolly dolly meri vitamin ki goli/ Oh my baby baby tera chakkar chala jalebi…’ (Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola).

54

JANUARY 2015 / HAPPY FLYING!

This, by the same Gulzar who has written immortal lyrics for films like Aandhi and Gharonda! Ace Of All Trades! What is even more fascinating is that music composers, lyricists and singers today are so talented that often they are an allin-one package. Whether it’s composing, playing instruments or singing, they do it all. Rahman has sung on many of his compositions like ‘Luka chupi…’ (with Lata

Mangeshkar in Rand De Basanti) and ‘Dil se re…’ (Dil Se) while Amit Trivedi has sung for ‘Zinda…’ (Lootera), ‘Manjha…’ and ‘Meethi boliyan…’ (Kai Po Che) and Ram Sampath for ‘Lakh duniya kahe…’ (Talaash) and ‘Bhaag DK Bose… ‘(Delhi Belly). Musically speaking, 2014 sure has a lot to look forward to and it’s all happening here in Indyah! …Thanks, guys. You truly add a song to our hearts and to our lives!

Quite the ardent traveller, aren’t you! I do like to travel. I think more than travel, I like to make the most of the job that I am doing and one of the things that my work does for me is it lets me travel and then I extend my stays! When I have 10 days off, I always take off. I always take my summer break. I think that is the way I have been brought up, you know… always take two holidays a year. For my summer break, I had gone to Spain and just now I was in Sweden for work and after

that it was my birthday so I went to Paris. So if the choice is between spending my little saved up cash on a big party versus just going and seeing a new place, I will always choose seeing a new place. What, according to you, is a perfectly sorted vacation? There are two types of holidays; one is a budget holiday and one is just going all out. With the latter, there is no end to it—even a yacht is not good enough! I am not that kind of person but I always try and make sure that I do a lot of bookings online so you get the best deals.

What are the kind of places that you would not want to go to at all? Freezing cold places. They are not my thing. I am not a cold place person. The most essential thing for me is a beach. If I have to go for a holiday in December, I would like to go to a place like Australia or South America, the Caribbean, some parts of the Pacific because they are still warm.

Italy and the US. The US because we also go there for work a lot and in India, I would say Kerala and Rajasthan.

Which places have the maximum repeat value for you?

Any embarrassing moments encountered while travelling?

JANUARY 2015 / HAPPY FLYING!

Do you like to travel by yourself and explore places or do you like the idea of the more the merrier? I feel that on a holiday, you need some time off and also in the kind of profession I am in, I am already around so many people all the time.

When I travel, my bags are sometimes very heavy and I get really embarrassed when they ask me if I could transfer some of my stuff to the other bag. I get really embarrassed to open my bag in front of everyone and, just out of respect for myself, I always end up paying excess baggage. Also, I have had crazy experiences like packing for winter and reaching my destination to find it’s summer there! Or sometimes I’m like, lets go to the beach but I find I have the top of one bikini and the bottom of another!

Start off this month as you would like to finish it. Difficulties at work need to be encountered with expertise and support. An arrogant stance of a family member is likely to prove upsetting. Impulse shopping can leave your budget in tatters. It may be difficult to get your money back from someone you have loaned it to. Digestive or skin problems can cause problems.

Media professionals may get an opportunity to rub shoulders with the bigwigs of the industry. Excellent preparation is likely to find some soaring on the academic front. Prayers of those in the family way are likely to be heard. Restructure your workout schedule to benefit more on the health front. Sound financial health allows you to pay off the old debts.

Aesop’s Fables (Translated by George Fyler Townsend)

Trivia Time!! The chameleon has a tongue that is 1.5 times the length of its body!

The Bat and the Weasels A bat who fell upon the ground and was caught by a weasel pleaded to be spared his life. The weasel refused, saying that he was by nature the enemy of all birds. The bat assured him that he was not a bird, but a mouse, and thus was set free. Shortly afterwards the bat again fell to the ground and was caught by another weasel, whom he likewise entreated not to eat him. The weasel said that he had a special hostility to mice. The bat assured him that he was not a mouse, but a bat, and thus a second time escaped. Lesson: It is wise to turn circumstances to good account.

The Man and the Lion A man and a lion travelled together through the forest. They soon began to boast of their respective superiority to each other in strength and prowess. As they were disputing, they passed a statue carved in stone, which represented “a lion strangled by a man.” The traveller pointed to it and said: “See there! How strong we are, and how we prevail over even the king of beasts.” The lion replied: “This statue was made by one of you men. If we lions knew how to erect statues, you would see the man placed under the paw of the lion.” Lesson: One story is good, till another is told.

The Wolf and the Lamb A wolf, meeting with a lamb astray from the fold, resolved not to lay violent hands on him, but to find some plea to justify to the lamb his right to eat him. He thus addressed him: “Sirrah, last year you grossly insulted me.” “Indeed,” bleated the lamb in a mournful tone of voice, “I was not then born.” Then said the wolf, “you feed in my pasture.” “No, good sir,” replied the lamb, “I have not yet tasted grass.” Again said the wolf, “you drink of my well.” “No,” exclaimed the lamb, “I never yet drank water, for as yet my mother’s milk is both food and drink to me.” Upon which the wolf seized him and ate him up, saying, “Well! I won’t remain supper-less, even though you refute every one of my imputations.” Lesson: The tyrant will always find a pretext for his tyranny.

JANUARY 2015 / HAPPY FLYING!

If all the blood vessels in your body were laid end to end, they would reach about 60,000 miles. A Japanese explorer named Maomi Uemura was the first man to reach the North Pole alone, on April 29, 1978, after his eight-week journey. The smallest egg laid by a living bird is that of the hummingbird. It is less than 0.39 inches in diameter. It takes food seven seconds to go from the mouth to the stomach via the esophagus. In North America, children put stockings out at Christmas time. Their Dutch counterparts use shoes.

An African adult elephant eats about six hundred pounds of food a day; that’s four per cent of the elephant’s body weight! Your brain is move active and thinks more at night than during the day. The honeybee has to travel an average of 43,000 miles to collect enough nectar to make a pound of honey! The stonefish, which lives off the coast of Australia, is the most poisonous fish in the world. It is impossible to sneeze with your eyes open. (Try it the next time!!) The earliest fossil cockroach is about 280 million years old—80 million years older than the first dinosaurs!

Just For Laughs Q: What d wear to th id the tree A: Swimm e pool party? ing trunk s!

Fly into a “HAPPY LIFESTYLE”

Feedback I would like to share my experience flying on Air Costa’s Flight 667 on December 5, 2014 from Hyderabad to Coimbatore. I would first like to thank the ground staff at the Hyderabad Airport for upgrading us from Economy to Business Class—thus making the journey more comfortable. The on-board crew members Sujata and Uma entertained my son throughout the journey and were very prompt to address any request. Lastly, the pilots ensured a smooth flying experience despite the cloudy and turbulent weather conditions. We’ll surely consider Air Costa for our next journey! Thanks all for the excellent service and making it a pleasurable trip. I wish you all the best. Keep up the best service. Anagha Masane-Meena

Dear Air Costa, The experience on your flight as a passenger was an awesome one—right from start to end. Cabin crew members Vijisha Niranjan and Venky Vinky were friendly, and most importantly, the seating on the Embaer was as best as you get in an airline. And Captain William and First Officer P. S. Bharadwaz, thanks for the smoothest landing I have ever experienced. Over all the experience was FIVE STAR! Sashi Raj

‘Houses’ are made with bricks and mortar, but ‘Homes’ are made with love, affection and warmth. It is a place where people live together, eat together, grow stronger together, get enlightened together and love each other. It is a place where the members of the family share their joys and sorrows. Eating together is one of the basic tenets of family life. It gives everybody an opportunity to meet together and eat together. Unfortunately, in the modern ‘busy bee’ world, family members are not finding time to meet at the dining table. There is a great difference between ‘eating food’ and ‘sharing food’. When people eat food, they ‘exist’ and when they share food, they ‘live’. However busy one is, one can always plan some time for him and for his family. Calling oneself busy and missing important aspects of life is not wisdom. All that one has to do is to restructure one’s time frame. Call for a family get-together and arrive at a consensus for a ‘common eating time’! It could be breakfast or lunch or supper. Still, if you think that eating together every day is not possible; make it at least once in a week. Preferably at home! If you go out and eat, there is a danger of your losing that family cohesiveness. When you eat together, you enjoy the food along with love, affection and warmth. Food eaten in such an ambience will do well to the body as well as to the mind. Eating-together! Start this good ‘custom’ today itself, lest tomorrow may be too late!
