Face Behind the Mic
FLYERPROMONOW presents
DJ Bobby Black DJ Bobby Black is a very familiar name in Atlanta and especially in the mix tape industry. His mix tape series “Down and Dirty ” has been flooding the streets for
DJ to start breaking records online. Currently, he stays busy being the official tour DJ for Monica & Gorilla Zoe but he is also in the studio working hard to complete his new album dropping this year. years and he just maybe the first southern
So Black, I’ve been hearing your name and seeing your grind out here for years man. Where are you from and how did you get your start as a DJ? Well, I started off as an artist rapping from Springfield, Massachusetts. I moved to Atlanta in 98 but the group was still back home and all I had was my turntables. So I decided to go hard on the DJ tip because I didn't know anyone to get access to a studio. Then I met my first manager Mr. Brown and he discover that I could really DJ so we started working together and that’s when I came up with my first "Down and Dirty" mix tape. Who were some of the DJs making noise in the city when you got started and what do you think about the saturation of the DJ industry? When I was coming up, you had DJ Ron G, DJ Mars, Frank Ski, DJ Emperor Searcy, Farenheight, DJ Jelly, Juice, & Drama...These are just some of the names I can remember right now but all these guys were good. They were scratching and blending so you couldn't come up behind them or call yourself a DJ back then if you couldn't keep up with them. No disrespect meant but today a lot of people call themselves DJs but that doesn't always mean they're students of the craft. I feel like the saturation of DJs is only affecting the mix tape game because some don't respect the art enough. It takes a little bit more then DJing with a mouse, Lol. My advice is if you're gonna call yourself a DJ learn how to do it properly. Now, I know a lot of DJs but only a few can say they've been tour DJs. How did this opportunity present itself and what’s the biggest difference between doing a club set and a stage show set? I ended up being Monica's tour DJ when this guy Luis who use to manage the Super Friends gave me a call and I went out to do the first show. It went good but I was nervous. Not because of the show but because it was Monica. I didn't do any groupie stuff but I grew up listening to her and I might have had a little crush on her too, Lol but I did my thing and after that I continued spinning for her on tour. Now the biggest difference between a club set and a show set to me is that a stage performance pays more and you play for an hour or less. A club set can be like 4-5 hours but the downside is when you get off tour it can be a little difficult getting back into the club thing. So what projects are you working on currently and where can my readers check up on you? Currently, I’m still doing shows with Monica and Gorilla Zoe. I have a DVD dropping, a new single out with O.J. The Juice Man and Verse Simmons called "Pretty." Also, another single coming with Gorilla Zoe and a new "Down and Dirty" and "Crack Addiction" mix tape. understanding the politics behind the game. Not understanding the true definition of the business as far as royalties, publishing, mechanicals, and the depth of a contract and going through those experiences and finding out that we were being ripped off just made me want to get educated about the business.
Ok, what was the moment or situation that caused you to start booking for artist?
on top of the game If you haven’t heard of entertainment mogul Johnnie Cabbell, you’ve definitely heard of his work. From the Award winning rapper Shawty Lo to hit groups such as gold-selling snap quartet D4L and the group that started it all, Crime Mob, Cabbell has been at the forefront of their success as both trusted manager and loyal friend. “I started off booking shows for artists like Pastor Troy, Trillville, Yo Gotti, Franchise Boyz, Webbie, Lil Boosie and Lil Scrappy,” states Cabbell. “The shows I booked were always run professionally and after artists saw how I handled my business they would open up to me and discuss problems about their contracts or financial issues and I would offer my advice, which is when I took a chance on helping guide people to profitable careers. I’ve put a lot of food on a lot of tables.” As CEO of Hitt Afta Hitt Entertainment (HAHE), a mega-media conglomerate and a former R&B singer himself, Cabbell not only has a thorough knowledge of the business of music, but relates to the artistic side as well, much like the industry heavyweights he respects, such as “LA” Reid, Jay Z, Master P Miller, 50 Cent and Diddy. Cabbell’s wide-range of professional pursuits will certainly cement his position in the industry sooner rather than later.
Where are you originally from and what circumstances caused you and your family to move here? Well, I am originally form Cleveland, Ohio. My parents divorced when I was young so that’s what brought me to Atlanta. I was like 7 or 8 yrs. old and I’ve been here ever since.
Ok, I know your root background in the industry is in R&B. Who inspired you to become an artist and why do you feel that dream never came to pass being that today you are responsible for so many artist succeeding?
Well, as far as inspiration, what inspired me to be an artist was music itself. I've always had a passion for music. I was blessed to have this talent so that’s what led me to pursue being an artist. Now as far as that endeavor not coming to pass, I just found my niche and that was being behind scenes. Sometimes a real person must understand where there true talents are and when GOD calls you to go in another direction. Also, I learned from the downfalls and stuff I went thru when I was coming up in the music industry as far as singing and not
You know that’s funny you asked that question because I was doing it a whole year before I knew that’s what I was doing. I mean from traveling on the road and being around a lot of the top artist and being in that circle allowed me to gain a lot of relationships. I have always been a people person and able to adapt real quick so I was gathering information along the way. I knew how to get in touch with certain artist/people and if someone asked me for a contact I would just make the connection for them. Then one day someone pulled me to side and said, “do you know you can make money, what are you doing,” then I realized my lane and got focused.
What are some of the problems you run into dealing with promoters?. People saying they got your money and don’t have it, people booking hotels fraudulently, promoters counting on the door to pay you all your money and then can’t or trying to pay you with counterfeit money. I mean, I experience some of everything and I learned that people could be very sneaky.
I see you’re about to make another major move with a TV network. What can we look forward to with that project and how can I submit a show? Yes, we’re launching our online TV Network and just getting more into the digital side of things. I mean everybody is on the internet and the game has changed so much from what it use to be so as business owner you have to be able to adapt to stay on top of things.
Does HAHE function as a management co. and if so who do you currently manage? I do have a management company as well and I manage Crime Mobb, D4L, Shawty Lo, Fabo, Yung Ralph, Ray Lavendar, Neffe from the “Frankie and Neffie show” and I have some new artist coming out as well. I just teamed up with Rico from Block Ent and we working together to make something real big happen and I am excited about some of these new artists we’re working with.
What’s the deal with Julia Beverly of Ozone trying to trash you? Why would she direct so much time and energy to this negative press? I think she’s coming at me like that because she is intimidated by my success, she’s intimidated by the relationship I have with some of these artist. Also, it came from her being upset about a situation that went bad for her because she didn’t handle her business the right way trying to be a big bully and ended up loosing out. I mean all the stuff she’s been putting out hasn’t been proven. There is nothing with documents backing up her accusation as far as her alleged statements about “Federal Charges.” Its just a lot of hatred. Overall, I think she just has a lot of animosity built up and I think she just need a hug. Sometimes you win and sometimes you loose and there’s no need to lash out at other people. atlanta

Check Out some of the hottest up and coming artists in ATL Featured Artist: Algebra Blessett "R & B Songtress"
Ironically there are no textbooks or classroom instructions that could help one balance the equations of Kedar Massenburg's newest protg, ALGEBRA. The Atlanta native insists that one can only discover her sonically. As an R&B solo artist with such a simple solution, when mainstream success seems to be more about the right hair, nails and make -up, Algebra is the perfect curriculum for breathing life back in to a genre overwrought by factory made clones. No stranger to performing, Algebra has been lending her melodic voice to projects and live shows for years. To read more about this young lady log ontp: www.myspace.com/algebrablessett

S H A W T Y L O "TALK OF ATLANTA" S
hawty Lo is no doubt one of Atlanta's most noted names in the streets and in every household. Not only has he set the city on fire with several hits, but he also continues to make his presence known on the charts and to his industry peers. He supports causes like The Chancy Davis Charity Foundation which seeks to educate and reduce diabetes cases. A diabetic himself, Lo understands the importance of efforts such as this. In addition, Shawty, along with Hit Men DJs, contributes to Toys in the Hood, donating money, toys and time. Recently, I caught up with Shawty Lo and in an exclusive interview, got the 411 on the man behind the image. What's up, Shawty? Thank you for taking time out of your schedule to sit for this interview. No problem. It's all good. Let’s get it. Who are some of the artist you grew up listening to and what inspired you to become an artist yourself? Basically, a lot of rappers. But who really inspired me was Jay Z because what he was talking about was in my lane. That was my real life. I'm originally from Florida and I can remember a time before MTV and BET, when radio rarely supported hip hop. If you didn't have a relative up north or someone to send you a mix tape back then, you couldn't hear certain artist. So when did you get into Jay Z? I wasn't really into music like that. I was in the street back then. It wasn't until around 2006 when I started rapping. Hard Knock Life was the 1st album I heard when I got into Jay Z. And from that I went back to check out his past two albums. So when would you say was the turning point to you becoming a serious artist? Was there an incident in your life or was someone around you making it happen? Basically the streets and the drug game were becoming too much of a gamble. The police seem like they were getting too close so I said to myself, "Let me invest my money somewhere else". We were already like a company with D4L in the hood, so I went and got some guys I knew could rap from different projects and formed a the group called D4L. I really wasn't trying to become a rapper. I wanted to be more like the CEO behind the music. Then I ended up going to prison in 2004, but I was blessed to come home in one year, 2005. By then we had the music thing going, but one of my artist named Lamar came up to me and said, "People in the streets are saying D4L ain’t nothing without Fabo." So I kind of took that offensively and that’s what made me start going hard in the studio late at night to make music. Finally I came up with my first solo song called, "I'm The Man". I put it out and people were coming up to me like, "Shawty Lo, we feeling that." They said, “We wanna hear this kind of music from you. Because we know you're from Bankhead and live what you're rapping about.” In my mind
By: Knowa Logic “The Interviewer”
I started thinking it was luck, but I kept doing music and they were like, "Shawty, you're the one". Let me ask you this: How did you drop "I'm the Man"? Did you hit the strip clubs or do a Gansta Grillz CD? To be honest with you, "I'm The Man" was released on our first album D4L- Down 4 Life, and people just pin-pointed that song. That's what made me start rapping, when that song took off. It was blowing up all over the Westside and city. Most people didn't even know it was me on the song because the CD was labeled, “I'm The Man” by D4L instead of Shawty Lo. I ask this question because I believe the readers need to know what a lot of artist had to endure to get where they are today. What has been the biggest change you have had to make since you’ve become successful in the music industry? Well, not in a million years would anyone think I would become a rapper, man. So the biggest change for me, coming from being on of the largest drug dealers and to be blessed to do something else that could turn a negative into a positive like music, and to continue living a lavish lifestyle like I was living. I don't like to really glorify how I used to survive, but to be able to make a change and be alive for it is a blessing. What’s your label situation presently? I have my own label D4L Records and I'm backed as an independent by Assylum. Recently I was reading an article by a local writer titled "The slow death of ATL Hip Hop". In this article, the writer’s opinion was that because the artists in Atlanta don't work hard enough on their craft, like they did in the Motown days, the eye of the music industry would look away soon. What do you think about that statement? Basically people got their own opinion but I don't believe we have to focus on our craft. I really don't consider myself an artist. I'm just a real dude who just kicks my life story on beats. So I can't really speak for the next rapper, but you know, everybody got their time. If Atlanta got its time then it got its time. East coast had their time, west coast had their time. Rappers like me, T.I. and Gucci, we just kicking what we live. We ain’t trying to be nobody else. We're just being real and that’s what our fans expect from us. So my craft is being real. That’s what up. So where can the people find out what’s next from Shawty Lo? Okay, my Myspace is myspace.com/therealshawtylo and my twitter is the same. I got the new cologne coming out on Valentine’s Day called Lo Seductions, the liquor is called Funnel. I got the new mix tape dropping in the 1st quarter. My new album, "I Am Carlos," is coming, also a book on my life story. New artist, videos, and I just opened a foundation called LO LO (Loving Our Little Ones). atlanta - www.flyerpromonow.com 15

REMOTEKONTROL J
ulius “iGlide” Chisolm, Marquese “Nonstop” Scott, and Bryan “Chibi” Gaynor are masterful dance animation artists and fresh new faces on today’s dance scene; a world class act with talent beyond measure. The trio was formed in 2008 as the Electric Beat Magicians (EBM crew). Limited to performing only around Atlanta, they decided to audition for the hit show "America’s Got Talent." The name then evolved into RemoteKontrol when the vision of performing as remote controlled statues came to mind. The crew did exceptionally well on the TV show and made it all the way to the Las Vegas rounds. These days, in between performances, RemoteKontrol is preparing for a middle and high school tour across Europe and the USA to begin in early 2010. For this tour RemoteKontrol is teaching today’s youth how violence, alcohol and drugs can cost them their lives. Sponsored by The Melanie Thornton Youth Arts Foundation, a nonprofit organization, RemoteKontrol performs exciting animated dance scenarios to illustrate the power of choice. atlanta

The Drama-Free Zone With A’ndrea J. Wilson
Atl
anta, you have just entered the Drama-Free Zone–NO HATERS ALLOWED! Check in with me monthly, here at Flyer Promo Now Atlanta, to get my top five countdown of the most positive and inspiring current entertainment and lifestyle trends. Here at the DramaFree Zone, we check the negative press at the door and give props to those deserving of it. The year 2010 brings us new resolutions, commitments, and aspirations. With the continuation of economic uncertainty, it is important that we save our energy (and money) for the people and things in life that really matter. Although Atlanta is known for being a city of financial growth and prosperity, I would like to encourage this city to embrace the beauty of simplicity. So, in this issue of Flyer Promo Now, we’re counting down my top five suggestions for how to live a more simplistic life in the ATL. Let’s start the countdown…

Just Say “No” To Poppin’ Bottles At The Club. Although it may look fly in music videos, poppin’ bottles of expensive alcohol in real life does not make you cool. In all actuality, the only people benefiting from your foolishness are the club owners who are making a 300 to 400 percent profit. If you must go out and consume liquor, be on the lookout for drink specials and open bar promotions. Leave the bottle poppin’ to the celebrities and save your money for important stuff like the Georgia Power bill, child support, gas money…You get the point.

Appreciate Your “Free & CleanTitled” Car. Ahh Atlanta. Home to the “everyone owns a BMW or Benz”. Okay, so you may not turn heads while driving in your 1999 Honda Accord, but guess what? It’s paid for and still getting you from point A to point B. Why enter into debt taking on an auto loan trying to impress? The next time you see someone cruising by in their brand new luxury car, ask yourself this: Is it really worth a $400-$700 a month headache? Uh, probably not.

It’s Okay To Rent. I know, I know, it’s a buyers’ market. That doesn’t mean you have to buy a house. Who cares if all of your friends already own a house? Now, don’t get me wrong. I am all for economic advancement and home ownership, but wait
20

until you are one-hundred percent prepared to take on the financial responsibility of buying a home. Until then, enjoy the many benefits of renting such as freedom from paying for maintenance, property taxes, homeowners’ insurance, and homeowner association fees. When you are finally ready to purchase, opt for something affordable with a low interest rate rather than the six-bedroom house in Buckhead. This is not an episode of Cribs.

Prada, Flatscreens & Wii, Oh My! I will be the first to admit it; I’m a lover of Coach and Chanel. Who doesn’t like nice things? Every few months a new purse, fashion line, or technological gadget comes out and we do what consumers do best: consume. Despite popular opinion, you really don’t need it all. Yeah, it’s shiny and maybe even on sale, but you already have two older versions of it at home or one in blue. Learn the difference between wanting and needing and you will save a whole lot of cash.

…Love The One You’re With. I know in today’s society it seems a bit taboo to be in a monogamous relationship, but being faithful is both emotionally and financially beneficial. Divorces, separations, and breakups can be costly matters regardless of the stage of your relationship. There are a lot of unfaithful people who are living with insurmountable regret (Hint: Tiger). The essence of simplicity is contentment right where you are. There is no need to be greedy or gluttonous. If the person you are currently with has been good to you, return the favor and leave all others to find someone special of their own.
And
Until the next time, keep it positive! A’ndrea

MARTIN LUTHER KI N G
by Attiyya Anthony
During the tumultuous American civil rights era in the 1960s, Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream described a revolutionary world— a world of racial peace. A world where fire hoses and German Shepard’s weren’t used as ‘negro removal’ methods, a world that didn’t distinguish ‘coloreds’ from ‘whites,’ a world that guaranteed every citizen justice, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Now, almost 50 years later, we still can’t stop talking about this man and his dream. So every January 15th of every year, we recognize and honor Martin Luther King Jr. and his message, and remember to be progressive, well-educated, world-changing individuals. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. King always excelled at school and skipped both the ninth and twelfth grades, which allowed him to enter Moorehouse College at age 15. Once he received his Bachelors in sociology he enrolled in theological school, and soon became a Baptist minister and a civil rights activist. He then went on to receive his Doctorate in philosophy. His civil rights work began in Birmingham, Alabama in the 1950s. He was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, founded the Southern Christian Leadership Council and helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott that made Rosa Parks so famous. He continued to inspire change and equality in the South, before storming the steps of the Lincoln Memorial with millions of supporters for the ‘March on Washington’ in 1963. On these steps, he gave his historical “I Have a Dream” speech, which solidified his place in American history. His speech was a platform for dissatisfaction and a call to action for black Americans. He said that day, “we cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one…No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.” A year after that monumental speech, he became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation through non-violent means. He gladly donated the $54,123 in prize money back to the civil rights cause. Despite his message of peace and equality, King was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. His death was a national upset and sparked nationwide riots’ in over 60 cities across the nation. He is survived by his wife Coretta Scott King and their four children. Even in death, his inspirational legacy lives on in the hearts of contemporary leaders, like Barack Obama, Oprah, Denzel Washington, and those dedicated to seeing total equality and change in our world. If nothing else, Martin Luther King Jr. has shown the world that you don’t need to wish upon a star for your dreams to come true, all you need is within yourself.

Frat Corner by Mokah D.
Black College Football Hall of Fame On Feb. 20, 2010, Doug Williams “Super Bowl MVP and James "Shack" Harris “Pro Bowl MVP” are expected to officially launch the Black College Football Hall of Fame by enshrining it’s first eight inductees, right here in Atlanta. Atlanta has made positive footprints in many lives, especially within the doors of Historical Black Colleges such as Clark, Spellman, Morehouse, & Morris Brown University. These colleges/universities enabled AfricanAmericans to earn a higher education when there where limitations and have produced great athletes and business professionals. With this in mind, Williams and Harris selected Atlanta to House the Hall of Fame. Williams and Harris’ goals are to preserve the legacy and honor the greatest players and coaches in Black Colleges and Universities. The Hall Of Fame will operate as a traveling exhibit, giving general students and black college football fans another resourceful platform. The Four Seasons Hotel will host the enshrinement. February is Black History Month, making the timing of this event seem perfect. A list of several candidates includes Ed “Too Tall” Jones (DL), Leroy Kelly (RB), Willie “Honey Bear” Lanier (LB), Coach Marino “The Godfather” Casem (Alcorn State, 1963-1992), Coach Alonzo “Jake” Gaither (Florida A&M University, 1945-1969), and Coach Willie Jeffries (Head Coach, South Carolina State University, 1973-2001).
