FACE BEHIND THE MIC

FLYERPROMONOW presents FLYER

DJ MLK BY KNOWA LOGIC "THE INTERVIEWER" What’s happening BRU? Just country cooling man you know. Doing what I can to make this money. So MLK why don’t I see more mixtapes out there hosted by you? Well, I don’t really consider myself a mix tape DJ but I have a few out there. I was really introduced to the mixtape game by DJ Scream and DJ Black Bill Gates. I’m a country boy so I wasn’t really up on that but I got my start in the clubs and that’s where I been for a minute. I’ve been part of some significant projects to keep my name out there and it helps but at the end of the day I’m a Club DJ. Being that you’re in the clubs spinning, do you find that a lot of independent artist want you to pick their singles or validate their talent? Since I’m in Atlanta, I get that on the regular. They holla on Twitter, Facebook and even when I’m out and about but there has only been a hand full of artist I’ve really dealt with. It takes a good artist to get me behind a project like it’s my artist.

So MLK do you spend a lot of time on the road now a days? Oh yea man. I’ve been the DJ for T.I. for about 2 years now. I have been in almost every State. I also did 106 & Park and a couple of other TV shows. So where did you get your name from? Well, it’s interesting that you asked that because presently I’m taking care of some legal issues to make sure I don’t have any problems in the future. You see, most people don’t really know but MLK is my real initials. So now you know where the name came from. Being that you spend a lot of time on the road do you ever enter a market and discover there’s a new sound bubbling there? Aw man, for me I would say South Carolina, Florida, L.A., Detroit and North Carolina. Man, I hit some places and heard some jamming ass records. You’ll be like damn, why this shit isn’t out there yet? But one thing about this business is that until it’s your time it won’t happen. Let me put it like this. My dad was a well-known DJ. So this is something I’ve been around even before I had my 1st turntable. I was taught that being a good DJ is like being a good preacher in the sense that you have to motivate the people to get involved. So I don’t really have a set, I just let the spirit and the energy of the crowd persuade me. I might even throw a slow jam on. So the passion is still there. I feel you man, cause just like in the church, the people in the club go thru things too and need to release. So MLK where can my reader keep up with you and your grind? Yea, before I go, I want yawl to look out for a project DJ Scream and I are doing with 8 Ball & MJG and you know T.I. is back so he about to do it big. He’s in the studio with some major cats now so look out for that and yawl can hit me up on Twitter@MLK.

ATLANTA'S ARTISTS Around 2ish, on a beautiful afternoon of mid October year 1985. In a small hospital on Naples AFB in Brindisi, Italy, a young American woman delivered an Angel and named her Michelle. With her, Angel Michelle brought to the world a new tune. This vivacious tune enabled her to share her musical talents with a myriad of audiences, attend Magnet Schools for the Performing Arts, and explore her musical talents in diverse ways. Now at the age of 24, Angel Michelle conquers her first independent album Magnetic Attraction. Listen as she continues to bring to the world her fascinating appeal.

ANGEL MICHELLE

In 2003 Dirty Red performed at the birthday bash hosted by the Atlanta radio station Hot 107.9. From performing the club banger ‘Crank This Shit Up’, to the female crowd pleaser, ‘Shorty, Cutty, Buddy, Freak,’ he gave the audience an energetic, head bobbing, performance. After that, Interscope Records invited Dirty Red to enter into a contest that was going to be shown on the cable network Showtime. It was a special show called ‘Next’ where they would pick two rap artist from five to six cities, and through a process of elimination, the last rapper would be given a contract with Interscope Records, but Dirty Red declined, choosing instead to continue to sow his own seeds, taking more time to network throughout the hip-hop, and rap community. He went into the underground network of the rap circuit making mixtapes. He performed at numerous clubs around Atlanta. Opening for some of hip hop’s biggest acts, such as Gucci Maine, Bohagon, F.L.Y. , Sean Paul of the youngbloodz and the list goes on. To performing at college shows, appearing on talk, and radio shows getting airplay along the way, song after song getting better and better. Distributing over 20,000 units independently without a major record company behind it. This shows how much the people have an ear for his style.

DIRTY RED

Born and raised in SW Atlanta, Georgia as Gerard Fuller. He is an indubitable polished rapper who understands all to well the dynamics of living in the ghetto. His parents split when he was young and was not stable as a youth. He always pursued more constructive ways to win in this game called life. Always having had the gift of connecting with people, Rallo G., became interested in acting and signed with Jumandi productions as a child. He enrolled in North Atlanta High School's Arts Academy and learned how to be comfortable on stage. His peers have titled him “the hardest working man in the underground rap movement in Atlanta”. Rallo G. is grounded and ready to let the world know who he is. He has life stories to share with the world expressed through rap. Through this he wants you to become part of making his dream a reality. With his initiative he wants to go beyond the normal expectations set by mainstream. During his career he led his group MaSON (Mama’s son) vigorously throughout the southeast region. Realizing the fan following and gaining creative control, Rallo G. started his own record label, MaSON Inc. Records, three years ago. He has skillfully completed two solo albums and the MaSON Inc. mixed tape. Rallo G. www.myspace.com/rallog facebook.com/rallog reverbnation.com/rallog

ON TOP OF THE GAME

PRINCESS OF CRIME MOB

BY KNOWA LOGIC "THE INTERVIEWER"

PRINCESS, ONE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE ATLANTA BASED RAP GROUP CRIME MOB WHOSE DEBUT SINGLE "KNUCK IF YOU BUCK" FOUND SUCCESS ON URBAN RADIO DURING THE SUMMER OF 2004. THEIR SELF-TITLED DEBUT HIT THE SHELVES IN AUGUST OF THE SAME YEAR, REACHING #5 ON BILLBOARD’S R&B/HIP-HOP ALBUM CHARTS. IN LATE 2006, THE GROUP RETURNED WITH THE SINGLE "ROCK YO HIPS," ONCE AGAIN SETTING THE CLUBS AND AIRWAVES ON FIRE.

What’s up Princess! Are you good? I’m doing good thank you for asking. I’m excited about interviewing you because you’re going to help me understand of what took place during the snap movement. I have questions like, how did it feel to be a part of something so big from the inside? I feel like you will be able to explain from an artist perspective what took place. Well in the beginning we really didn’t take it serious enough. I never planned on being a rapper, it just suddenly happened. It was a hobby for me that took off. “Knuck If You Buck” was just an undeniable hit you couldn’t ignore. We recorded in my parent’s basement using Fruity Loops, not in a big studio with expensive microphones. Before that nobody really took Fruity Loops serious. The Poole Palace was the club on the Westside that help break the movement. We were from the east so there were clubs like Chocolates, Prime Time and of course The Atriums.

What DJ do you give credit for breaking the record? Oh that was DJ Southern Bread. He was spinning out of town and in a lot of spots. He did teen parties in Marietta and Atlanta. We never did a radio version so the radio came to the streets to get the record and they actually used the DJ Southern Bread version. So what was it like when the group starting hitting the road to do shows and getting paid? We started doing show in 2001.Those were shows that my brother and I worked to pay promoters to open up. I was working at McDonalds, paying for show and for DJs to spin the record. But the first couple of shows we actually got paid for we received $300. So with six of us, we got about $50 each and thought we were balling (laughs). My mother was like, “Yawl the #!$& group in the city and that’s all they’re paying?” We thought she was tripping, but low and behold when we hit the road we found we were getting screwed. Then Johnnie Cabbell came along and took the position of being our new manager. When he stepped in we were doing shows everywhere. We had to have a meeting and decided to ask Johnnie to slow down on the shows because the road was starting to take a toll on us. We were getting aggravated with each other and needed a break. The money was good but it was becoming too much. I know you mentioned before that rapping was a hobby for you, but let me ask you this. At what point did you realize you could make a living doing it? Well, acting is my first passion. On the stage I noticed I can get that same feeling as when I’m in a play. So it was once we started performing. I don’t like traveling that much, but I love doing shows now. And once we stopped doing so many shows I was like this doesn’t feel right. I got to go do some shows. I need money. So it’s a business and that helped me put things in perspective. So what’s next for Princess and where can the readers keep up with you? Right now I’m finishing up a mix tape. I’ve changed the name on a couple of times and still haven’t settled on that. But it’s almost complete. I may be featured on a new reality show and I’m working on starting my label. Everyone can stay in touch with me at myspace.com/ princessofcrimemob, on Facebook it’s princessdigitall. My advice to new artist would be, put God first, keep humble, God-fearing people around you, make moves for you, and don’t compromise yourself or body for anyone. atlanta

Yung Smoke

making life work for him

BY KNOWA LOGIC "THE INTERVIEWER"

For a lot of people growing up in the hood, music is a great escape to what is really going on in their neighborhoods. Yung Smoke, being a true go-getter and representative of the Atlanta swag movement figured this out and allowed his lyrics to take him places that only few in his position can imagine. Focusing on not allowing his environment to corrupt the goals that he has set forth for himself, his future will prove to be very bright and full of knowledgeable experiences.

BEFORE WE BEGIN, I WANT YOU TO TAKE A MINUTE AND LET OUR READERS KNOW EXACTLY WHO YUNG SMOKE IS? I’m a pioneer originating from Zone 3 in SW Atlanta. I got my name as a kid just always smoking, (lol) imitating Smokey from Friday. I’m definitely wellspoken and a go-getter, never stopping or backing down from anything. All-in-all I when you say I can’t do it, my passion is to prove you wrong. SO HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU DECIDED THAT YOU HAD A PASSION FOR CREATING MUSIC?

13 years old. I remember writing and spitting my freestyles in the lunch room and on the back of the bus. I recorded my first song with Full Brown Studio. THIS INDUSTRY WILL SOMETIMES KNOCK YOU DOWN. WHAT DRIVES YOU TO KEEP GOING? My kids. People who are behind me. I believe that you are only as strong as the people that you have behind you. Anyone can be a Mc Hammer with fast lyrics and dance moves, but my family and life situations make me stronger and bring more understanding to my overall lyrics. WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE KNOW YOU FOR? “On My Way” which is an old school track with a reggaeton vibe. WHAT WAS THE NAME OF YOUR FIRST RELEASE? My first release was the Bricks on the Baseline mixtape featuring my first single “Block Bunkin.” Right now I got my mixtape hosted by DJ Dre of the Legion of Doom called Swagah Boy MVP. The streets love my new single “Okay” featuring Tamika Scott of Xscape. TELL ME SOMETHING THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT YOU? I’m a sweet, sensitive guy, but most people wouldn’t think so. I am very emotionally close to my family. At

first glance most people think that I am mean, but to the ladies I am nothing much a straight teddy bear. WHAT ATTRIBUTES DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE THE SEPARATES YOU FROM ALL OTHER ARTISTS TRYING TO FIND SUCCESS IN THE A?

Man, most of these artists really put effort in to being a product of their environment. You see I venture out of the projects to see and talk about new things that can’t be found in the hood. Trust me, my music speaks for itself. IF YOU COULD WORK WITH ANY 3 ARTISTS OR PRODUCERS IN THE WORLD, WHO WOULD IT BE?

I definitely gotta say T.I., Anthony Hamilton, and Jay Z. I would love to collab with anyone that has changed the game of hip hop at one stage or another. WHO IS YUNG SMOKE OUTSIDE OF THE MUSIC? Overall I am a genuinely cool dude. I like to chill out like mostly everybody else does. I do exactly what other normal 25 year olds do. I am the same guy all the way around the board. WHAT ONE WORD WOULD YOU USE TO DESCRIBE YOU AND WHY?

Confident, because I am my best believer. ANY TIPS OR ADVICE THAT YOU CAN OFFER THAT YOUNG BOY OR GIRL THAT IS TRYING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN HIP HOP? Don’t ever stop reaching your goal. Everybody needs a plan. Only the strongest will survive. You are the only person that can kill your dreams. Stay focused on your goals. HOW CAN YOU BE REACHED? You can follow me on twitter.com/1yungsmoke and myspace.com/1yungsmoke. I can also be reached at xumane1976@gmail.com, swagahboyent@gmail.com, and 678-508-4546.

OUTKAST

A Tribute

O

utkast is an American hip hop duo based in East Point, Georgia, consisting of Atlanta native André "André 3000" Benjamin (formerly known as Dré) and Savannah, Georgia-born Antwan "Big Boi" Patton. They were originally known as The OKB (The Outkast Brothers) but later changed the group's name to Outkast. The group's original musical style was a mixture of Dirty South and G-Funk. Since then, however, funk, soul, electronic music, spoken word poetry, jazz, and blues elements have been added to the group's musical palette. The duo is one of the most successful hip-hop groups of all time, having received six Grammy Awards. Over 25 million copies have been sold of Outkast's eight releases: six studio albums, a greatest hits release, and the Grammy Award-winning (for Best Album) Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, a double album containing a solo album from each member. Along with their commercial success, Outkast has maintained an experimental approach in their music and are widely praised for their originality and artistic content. On April 14, 2010 Big Boi said Outkast had something "brewing" and that it was "top secret". The new Outkast album will be released in the summer after Big Boi releases his solo album. The title of this album is to be announced.

“Getting to Know

62

Shawty

by Jessica Williams

Atlanta, a city that truly has its own unique sound. The artists are all energetic and animated, and the sound of this movement can be heard throughout all regions of the US. Atlanta artists know that there was a lot of money to be made in the music industry and figured out a way to get it. 62 Shawty knew this when entering the music game nearly 10 months ago. He tasted success and has never looked back. SO TELL ME WHO EXACTLY 62 SHAWTY IS? I’m hood, a gentleman, and I am definitely a pro at making a $1 out of $0.15. I made my successful transition into the corporate world. And at the end of the day I am known to get the job done. Of course I’m from Atlanta, but I have spent a lot of time traveling around the globe. I never really had a true childhood. Grew up in a barber shop, been cutting hair since I was 11 years old. I was always trying to get $1 by any means, from cutting hair to picking up cans. I always had a taste for success at a young age. WHAT ARE YOU MOST POPULAR FOR? I’m Mr. Whip It Bring It Back, the real culinary chef. I teach in the kitchen. IF THERE WAS ONE WORD THAT DESCRIBED YOU

PERFECTLY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Magnificent! I’m a people person and I put a smile on every individual’s face. I always want to bring joy to every situation. I mean, you never know how anyone’s day is going. WHO WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF COMPARABLE TO AS AN ARTIST? I’m comparable to Young Jeezy and Yo Gotti, mixed in with a little bit of Killer Mike and Plies. More of goon than anything else. WHAT ARE THE 3 MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN YOUR

LIFE?

God, my family, and money TELL ME SOMETHING THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT YOU? WE ALL LOVE SECRETS.

At the end of the day, no matter what is going on in my life as a goon, as an artist, or as an entrepreneur, I never let anyone see me sweat, no matter the circumstance. I have half a million. I’m a hundred thousandaire. Sweating is not an option. SO HOW DID YOU GET YOU START IN THE INDUSTRY. Out of the blue. My partners were recording at their studio one day, and they kept joking around, asking me to spit on some tracks. After so long I got tired of them asking me, so I went in and just started playing around in the booth. 2 years later I ran into one of the producers that was in that recording session. He played me a beat, and that was the beginning of 62 Shawty, the artist. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST SINGLE? Keys in the Cabinet ft. OJ Da Juiceman, it did excellent. I’ve been on the road doing shows all over since I put it out. (LOL). I’m getting’ that groupie love. WHO HAVE YOU WORKED WITH TO DATE? B. West, Track Hustlas, Big Country Kane, OJ Da Juiceman, Bohagen, Young Dro, the Grand Hustle Family, Brick Squad Family, and the Black Cartel. WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? Right now I’m working on my mixtape coming out called Keys in the Cabinet, Tap Manual Volume 1 with DJ MLK. He’s a Grand Hustle and Hoodrich DJ. My upcoming single is ‘Riding Down I-85’ and its like Akon and Jeezy’s ‘Soul Survivor’. DESCRIBE HOW KIDS AND LOVE FIT IN TO THE LIFESTYLE

OF 62 SHAWTY.

I love kids, and when it comes to kids, I want to show them the better side of life. I want them to see me like a big brother figure. My view on love is that at the end of the day, you have to forgive the people you hate to truly be blessed. HOW WILL YOU SPENDING THIS UPCOMING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND? I will be on the road travelling, doing shoes, and interviews. I’ll be working. It looks like I will be in Greensboro NC. HOW CAN YOUR FANS FOLLOW YOUR MOVEMENT? They can get at me directly at either i85ent@gmail. com or 62shawty1@gmail.com. Also they can follow me on myspace.com/62shawty, facebook. com/62shawty, and twitter.com/62shawty. ANY LAST WORDS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE TO OUR READERS? It’s your boy 62 Shawty, trapped out like a 9 to 5, ya’ll know the click. Bricks r us. One the road like them trailers up thru there. (Gone).
