ell…that was fun! Hottest summer ever, in my opinion. Then when I think about it, if the summer is over, then that means 2009 is damn near gone! Have we really partied away most of the year already? This year was definitely 2000-GRIND in the nightlife. Veteran promoters trying to redeem themselves and climb back to the top. Upcoming promoters trying to get in where they fit in. Even those promoters who have regularly scheduled events have found themselves putting in more work to maintain their reputation. To the outsiders, the promoting life looks easy. For those promoters already in the groove, this is a full time job. Nevertheless, keep those parties coming because we can’t get enough! This week, I tried out some different events and some familiar venues. Did you get a chance to make it out? “Pillow Talk” @ Room 23
I honestly didn’t see many promotions for this event. This event takes place every Sunday at one of my favorite looking venues, Room 23, located on Church St. Hosted by Ricky P, this event brings out the mature audience. This lounge-like venue is situated with deep, dark wooded walls, and ember glowing hues. They have a couple of oversized VIP booths, and the DJ booth is placed away from the crowd…great layout! I have to admit I love the concept of this party: all our favorite slow jams and RnB songs played by DJ Lyvewyre its entirety surely sets the mood of this event to something sexy & smooth. However, this concept doesn’t match
the venue. If I am going to be bumping the night away to Jodeci, Shai, Maxwell, and other great crooners as such, I am going to need a place to kick up my feet and really get into the groove. Loved the music, but the whole bumping & grinding scene was poppin in “House Party” and middle school dances. We are too grown to be all groping and sweating up on each other…not sexy. I am still surprised how fast the summer has come & gone. We all thought we were going to die with these record breaking temperatures. Good ole summer nights! Well, though the season is coming to an end, we know the heat will be around for a bit longer. So there is still time for a little more summer partying to do! Where will I be this week? You can catch me at “Trendsetter Thursday” at Club Envy on September 13 for a live performance by Black Dada. Can’t wait to see him perform that summer banger “I’m a Zoe”. They are letting the first 100 ladies in free! Also, they have started a new night at Rain Ultra Lounge called “Barcode,” and it features specials for those in the service industry. Definitely want to go check that out! Have an event you want the streets to know about? Invite me! Send emails & flyers to starletinthestreets@gmail.com. Party out the rest of the summer right… LET’S CELEBRATE!

Big Bag Complex We all would like at least one designer bag in our life time, "but hunny" no need to take that (knock off) bag to the club. If there is one thing that rattles my last nerve is the Big Bag Complex. Clutches or cute wallets are to be worn in the club. I don't want your big ass bag rubbing up against me when I'm dancing or trying to get my drink on. Shit probably fake any damn way.
Club Sweat Get your dance on, your groove on, or your mack on, but put some baby powder everywhere if you know you have an issue with your sweat glands. This shit right here is just ridiculous! All up in the booty area just dripping. I mean can you feel that? Would you want to look at this shit standing behind yourself? Get it together boo boo.
Best Dressed Just enough with both looks. Good job ladies!

Talk of Orlando, one of Hip Hop’s most anticipated artists to ever touch a microphone. He is classified as the “Beast from the East”, and is better known as JoeKel. Born Shawn Faison, he was raised in North Carolina and is Orlando bound. With his respectable track record and great quality music, JoeKel is destined to be a fan’s favorite. He has opened up for many signed artists, but most notably, his performance with Jadakiss and D-block was one to remember. He has been requested to represent the state of North Carolina at the Southeastern Music Festival as presents this weeks
well as giving back to his community by performing at Picasso, a benefit that is held to for aids awareness. JoeKel is determined in setting the bar high for artists that take the art of hip hop lightly.
JoeKel continues to heat up the streets with his When interviewers ask JoeKel “Why aren’t you signed yet?” JoeKel sits back and humbly says “That’s all about to change!” slew of mixtapes.
Miss O..!!: For every great story teller there is some type of hardship pain or realization that they must go through, in order for them to be considered a great story teller. What is yours? JoeKel: I went through a lot growing up in a single parent household. I had to make sure that both my younger siblings stayed on the right path; even though I was addicted to the fast lane. Growing up in the Carolinas there are not an enormous amount of options, especially living in a low income area. I may not have been the biggest gangster in my city, but I do feel that I had one of the strongest drives to get whatever I wanted and what I wanted was getting out of the “hood”. Don't get me wrong, I love my hood, but if you not doing anything to better your community, then you're only hurting it. Miss O..!!: What inspired you to get into the music industry? JoeKel: There were signs that had lead me to be in the music industry. I remember I was staying in Atlanta and this elderly couple told me that I would be involved in the music business and I didn't believe them. I believe now! Soon after that my homeboy Rich Mac told me that I should give it a chance and I have been in the industry ever since. I truly owe everything to Justin "Stress" Hill (RIP), one of my home boys that encouraged Rich Mac who in turn encouraged me. Justin was one of my hoods first and hottest rappers may he rest in peace. Miss O..!!: What makes your music different from other local artist that you have come across? JoeKel: What makes my music different is the sound. A lot of artist really don't take the time or don't know how to brand themselves. Looking at these independent or underground artist, I think they are selling themselves short if the keep it 100 percent street, instead of expanding their marketability. You have to look at artist such as 2Pac, Biggie, 50cent, Rick Ross, Trick Daddy, Jeezy and Gucci Mane who all do or did street music, but have been able to do it in a commercial way. You’re only going get so far in the underground market. Don't get me wrong you can be successful in the underground market but there’s not as many artist out there like UGK (RIP Pimp C) who have been truly successful.

Miss O..!!: It says in your bio that you have been compared to Biggie or to Rick Ross, what is about your style that they are comparing? JoeKel: I think my size and presence are what people first compare when they first see me. Then when they listen to my music that's when the comparison really comes into play. I try to have music for the hood, radio and clubs. You have to be versatile these days, plus both of those artists went from ashy to classy! Miss O..!!: If there was 1 album you would take with you to your grave, who would it be and why? JoeKel: What album would I take to the grave with me? Wow! I would take my first official album because that's what got me a deal. But if I had to choose another artist it would have to be Biggie's Life After Death album, because it was a complete album to me. It had club, radio, and street music from front to back. Miss O..!!: Talk about the album that you’re working on. What where your inspirations? What is the message? JoeKel: The album I'm working on is going to encompass different genres of music from urban, commercial, pop to rock. I believe that you have to tailor your music in such a way that you can secure your spot with a major label and become a household name. My album is going to be on an international level while at the same time deliver a message, at the end of the day it’s a numbers game. That's what I plan to do, an MJ 4th quarter shot! I have a whole state on my back so I can't afford to have spaghetti legs! Miss O..!!: How do you feel about the direction of rap? Do you feel it has lost its meaning? JoeKel: I think the direction of rap music basically evolved into what it is today due to major record companies looking for that “one hit wonder” so they can make their millions and leave. You can't really blame the artist that are out now because if a company pushes an artist that they know won’t survive to the next single or album, they are going to go for the quick buck. Again, it’s all a numbers game. I don't think rap music has lost its meaning, I think a lot of albums now have lost it's substance I do believe that's all about to change.

ooks like The Dream and Christina Milian have been busy. The Dream was recently promoted to Executive Vice President of Island Records; however while out shopping on the town, C. Mili was looking very pregnant. This is her second time to be photographed by the paparazzi dressed in winter clothes in the middle of summer. We'll stay tuned for this one. Just in case you haven't had enough of Beyonce, it's being rumored that Destiny's Child may be set to reunite in 2010. And speaking of The Carters; Jay-Z closes a deal with the New York Police! He's not snitching, but Hov did ink a benefit concert deal supporting the NYPD, Fire Widow's Association and The Children's Benefit Fund with FUSE and RocNation as event sponsors.
A weekly Entertainment, Legal News & Advice column from Shannon A. Ligon, The Entertainment & Legal Diva And on to some much needed advice... Dear Shannon, A close friend of mine started flirting with me and asking me out on dates. He's a really charming guy, but there's one major problem, he's my best friend's man. I know it's wrong but I've started to develop a genuine crush. Please help! Best Regards, Falling in Love Dear Falling, Wow! That's a tough one, but don't fall for it. I've been there before and its a bittersweet feeling. Every girl likes attention, but whatever you do, don't hook up with him! Just consider him as a crush to admire from afar and move on for now. If its meant to be later in life, it will be. It's an unwritten rule to never date a friend's ex, but every situation is different. Just be respectful of your friends feelings. TRUE
to the game by: Nick Grace
How long have you been in the business of selling rims and tires? I've been in the business roughly 20 years of experience started back in 1988. How was business different in New Jersey rather than down here? Basically, it's the same but down here it's mostly old school cars rather than the new cars. The weather is also a big factor being it's beautiful annually rather than seasonal.
407
Customs Superstore has been in business for ten years here in Florida. The business originated in New Jersey over 20 years ago. 407 Customs has been featured in such magazines as Vibe, Rides, and The Source to name a few. They have done business with many of the top name athletes, artists, and celebrities. The store is located at 1233 West Sand Lake Road across from the Florida Mall. I was able to stop by the shop and sit down with the owner True to discuss his business and his plans for the future. True, what's good with you homie? Just chilling man. Another blessed day trying to bring in more customers and make more money.

Due to the economic times being the recession have you had to market business differently or have sales still been pretty good? The economy has affected everybody one way or another. As Obama stated times will most likely get worse before they get better so it's basically a stability issue. However, being a hustler and a business man you find different avenues of how to still make your money. You can do cut backs, promotions, and several other methods to still bring in revenue to your business. This is an opportune time for you to test the waters and see just how much of a business man you can be. Are there any particular type of rims that sell more down here in the south rather than what was accustomed to being seen in the north? Dubs!!! I don't think it's worth the money at all because it is a cheap rim that is targeted towards the inner city. My true opinion is that it's an expensive wheel but still built cheap and is marketed towards the inner city. Who are some of the celebrities or ballers if you will who you done business with? I’ve done business with Shaq, Vince Carter, Brian Dawkins, Raekwon, Wu-Tang, Heathcliff the professional baseball player, Dominique Wilkins, Darryl
Armstrong, Tracy Mcgrady, Tony Battie, Jameer Nelson, DJ Prostyle, DJ Nasty, Briscoe-from Cash Money, DJ-Strong, DJ Caesar, Total, Mary J. Blige, Drew Gooden, Travis Fisher, Eddie Murphy, DJ Clue, Grandaddy Souf, Zaza Pachulia, Kelvin Cato, Daunte Culpepper, Dru from the Runners, and many more. Who is the most surprising celebrity that you have met who seems really down to earth? I would say Dominique Wilkins because he is like a legend, for us to be personal friends is quite amazing. I'm opening up business in ATL, having dinner with him being able to have his number and call him up anytime is remarkable. From seeing him on TV now to working with him that's crazy I have so much love for him. From me being a business man from the hood, I love the hood and how celebrities look for your business to bring publicity and fame. However, my business is built from the community and hard working blue collared workers. I'm real humble and I love my inner city regular 9-5 workers that is our target market. What made you move your business down to Florida? I necessarily, didn't move my business but expanded my market to the south. I have family throughout Florida and especially Orlando. I felt I could bring my business down here and I have had success in doing that. I still have businesses in the north and plan on doing more expansion in the future. What other services and products do u provide rather than just rims and tires? We do full custom installation from interior, car alarms, engine work, exhaust, custom paint work, audio, and pretty much everything you can think of.
is also in business with me because without him it wouldn't be possible. So much love in that regards because he has always been there. Are you running any specials at this point in time? We have specials everyday of the week. We have the best prices this is a proven fact. If you are not buying from us then its pure hate because we can compare the prices to other businesses and will always be on top. How can you be contacted outside of your shop? Through the store phone number: (407)-903-9228 fax: (407)-226-7029, twitter at twitter.com/truecooper, MySpace at www.myspace.com/407customs, facebook, and the store website www.407customs.com. What plans do u have in store for 407 Customs in the future? We are looking to expand open more stores as I stated earlier like in ATL. I have also started a wholesale business. I also went into business with some other people on an entertainment company called Drop Top Entertainment. I am also starting a non-profit organization/ charity because it's always about the future and the kids of today. I would like to provide a lot of support to the inner city and the community. Do you have any other comments you will like to share with the readers? Stop the violence!!! Be real with ourselves; love ourselves, always put god first in every scenario and everything will fall in to place. Please black people support our businesses. Please note, that now that we have a black president please do not get lazy because it is harder now because we have a better example and image to look up to. I wanna be a pro in the community and the inner city through my non-profit organizations.
How have you advertised your products via magazine, commercials, etc.? We have been in several magazines including Rides, The Source, Vibe, King, Makes & Models, commercials for the store basically ads, and also on-line on the various urban sites. How many other people are partners in your business? I'm the main owner of my business but at this point in time I'm trying to sell shares. I feel like my brother www.flyerpromonow.com

eing number one and winning is always the goal for any and every player or team. But sometimes winning doesn’t always mean your number one. This is the case with Serena Williams and her ranking in the US Open. Serena won three of the last four majors this year and is ranked No. 2. Of course in order to determine who number 1 becomes they have to use numbers and percentages and math, similar to the BCS rankings of NCAA football. I understand why it is done the way it is however it just boggles me that after winning three Grand Slams in one year Serena Serena Williams isn’t number one in the world. On the flip side, Tiger Woods hasn’t won a major this year thus far and he is ranked number one. With the BCS it isn’t always the number one and two teams that make it to the National Championship game. If you know anything about it it has to do with a voting process. I totally disagree with this system. I believe there should be playoffs in college football. I don’t see why the bowl games couldn’t be turned into playoff games. Speaking of NCAA football I would like to see golden boy Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators win a third title in four years. In college sports news John Calipari, the former University of Memphis basketball coach has ducked and dodged another scandal. Calipari conveniently left Memphis before it surfaced that an unidentified player, obviously Derrick Rose, had another person take his SAT’s for him. This is against NCAA rules meaning that Memphis will have their record-breaking 2008 season and final four appearance taken off the record books. It’s like it didn’t even exist. This is the second time Calipari has disappeared in the wake of controversy. In ’96 he left UMass after Marcus Camby was caught up in a scandal that involved him accepting $28,000, prostitutes and other gifts from an agent.

That incident also resulted in the team having their record for the season and their final four appearance struck from the books. Both times it couldn’t be proved that Calipari had known of the incidents and violated NCAA rules and regulations. It seems to me as though John Calipari isn’t the highest paid college basketball coach for no reason. That is a smart man. I’ve picked my fantasy football team. I didn’t get everyone I wanted during my leagues draft but I’m going to pull a Tom Coughlin and just work with what I have. Although the Giants have good depth in their wideouts I’m not sure if any of them will make up for the Plaxico Burress loss. Now that I am a T.O. fan (he got me from the reality show) I could see him doing good things in NY. But I know that’s not a possibility just a thought. In the Huddle Brandon Marshall was acquitted on two counts of simple battery stemming from an incident with a former girlfriend. Adam “Pacman” Jones signed a 1 year contract with a CFL team (Canadian Football League). Jones must have thought Roger Goodell was playing with him when he told him to behave. I understand he is a grown man and can do as he pleases but when it comes to getting a check I’m always on my best behavior.

Top 10 Reasons Why an Orlando Rapper hasn't blown up yet 1. Jealousy. Every rapper in Orlando wants to be the "King of the O", the problem is none of them want anyone else to take that title, so they don't get behind any rapper that they feel is a threat to them becoming "King of the O". Lets support other artists so the whole city can be put on the Hip Hop Industry's Map! 2. Money. Lets face it, most artists aren't spending too much money on their own music, so why should anyone else support their music? Alot of artists that do have money, don't have quality music and the ones that have great quality music, don't have money! 3. Disney World. Lets face it, Disney is a billion dollar corporation, do you really think they are gonna turn their head and let rappers who are rapping about killing, drug dealing, etc blow up in their backyard? Orlando/Kissimmee are known to hide alot of their crime in order to keep the tourists coming in and the money coming in! 4. Lack of local support. If Orlando's Hip Hop fans aren't supporting your music locally, it makes it that much more difficult for a label based in New York or Los Angeles to sign you or even hear about you. 5. Lack of consistent promotion. This topic goes back into the Money & Lack of local support factors. If these artists aren't spending money to press up their cd's & flood the streets, how are the Hip Hop fans in Orlando going to even hear their music to even know if they like it enough to support it? 6. Stop following trends, lets start trends! Ok, we all know alot of people who live in Orlando aren't originally from Orlando. So this means we bring in alot of outside trends into the city. The problem with this is people on the outside looking in, think that we are biting Atlanta or New York's style. I think we need a group of artists to come together and create something that originates from Orlando and lets set the trend!
7. Learn how to take Constructive Criticism. If an artist has done everything they can to try to get a DJ to play their music and the DJ still doesn't want to play it, they need to be able to take constructive criticism. Alot of artists press up CD singles on songs that are not good singles. Please learn how to get feedback before you spend money shopping a single. Once you receive that feedback, learn how to accept it. If most of the DJ's & people aren't feeling that song, this doesn't mean they are "hating on you", it means you need to switch up your single! 8. Only Listening to your Homeboys. Alot of times artists' homeboys will tell them 'your music is fire' when in reality they are afraid to tell you that they wouldn't listen to your music if they weren't your homeboy. Get feedback from sources outside of your immediate circle before you claim "I'm the hottest rapper in Orlando". 9. Lack of quality production/mixing. We get sent music all the time that is not properly mixed down. Please do not send anyone outside your immediate circle any music that is not mixed properly (First impression is sometimes your Last impression). If you get hot beats from a producer for free, take them all day. However if you are just taking a beat because it's Free, you are wasting everyones time! Artists you need to build relationships with hot producers and I'm sure that the prices can be worked out for hot production. 10. Build relationships, Don't Burn Bridges! If you understand the music industry you obviously see that their are alot of politics involved! Accept it, don't overlook it! I'm tired of hearing artists saying "I ain't no industry n****"! Obviously thats why you haven't made it in the "Music Industry". Introduce yourself to a DJ before you ask them to spin your record! Don't curse a DJ out if he doesn't spin your record, why should he? You complain that DJ's only spin local artists that they are cool with, so take notes and get "cool" with these DJs!
