DJ

Khaled believes he was born to be an entertainer. That’s understandable, considering that the 30-year-old New Orleans native has spent more than half of his life DJing. Even his birth name, DJ Khaled DJ Khaled, makes it seem like his life was never intended to be ordinary. For the past 15 years, that predestined entertainer has found his goal commanding South Florida Hip-Hop fans to follow DJ Khaled's signature phrase and “listennn.” The Miami-based DJ is now using that same enthusiastic self-promotion for Listennn…The Album, his debut on Koch Records. The Terror Squad DJ flexed his rolodex muscle and called on some of the top names in Hip-Hop to lend vocals and production. While DJ Khaled can forever claim to have brought Beanie and ‘Kiss full circle, he’s not quick to follow suit with his own crew’s G-Unit issues. This kind of attention may draw attraction to the project, but will that be enough? DJ compilations are traditionally dismissed by critics and consumers. However, the self-proclaimed “new logo of Koch Records” is out to spin that notion right around.

Akon|

born Aliaune Thiam, grew up in Senegal before he and his family (including his father, jazz percussionist Momar Thiam) eventually settled in the USA, in the state of New Jersey. There he discovered hip-hop and R&B music as well as crime. He was eventually jailed, but he used the time to work on his musical ideas. Upon release, Akon began writing and recording tracks in a home studio. The tapes found their way to SRC/Universal, which eventually released "Trouble," Akon's debut LP, in June 2004. The album was an interesting hybrid of Akon's hiphop-influenced sung lyrics and silky, West African-styled vocals with East Coastand Southern-styled beats.

Bobby Valentino|

Born in Mississippi but raised in Atlanta, smooth R&B crooner Bobby Valentino had a hard time convincing his skeptical parents that the music business was the place for him. When the 16yearold Valentino who was then known by his real name, Bobby Wilson hooked up with the Organized Noize Productions team, his parents knew he was serious and that his dream of a record deal was entirely possible. With a group of friends, Valentino formed Mista, a Boyz II Menstyled singing group that made some waves with their "Blackberry Molasses" single. The group's selftitled album appeared in 1996 but failed to match the single's success. A second, unreleased album was recorded with producer Timbaland's help but management problems split the group and Valentino decided to focus on college. After earning his degree in 2003, Valentino returned to demo work. One of his demos ended up in the hands of Ludacris, who made Valentino the first RB singer in the rapper's DTP (Disturbing tha Peace) crew. The sultry "Slow Down" announced the singer's rebirth as a DTP member in early 2005 and soon became a BET and radio favorite. As the ballad was landing numerous schools' prom ballots, Def Jam/DTP released Valentino's selftitled debut.

“ The Florida Turnpike is my best friend,” jokes the Orlando born promoter G Money. He has found himself going back and forth to Miami several times a week throughout the course of last year, involving himself with new companies and new clubs. Lately, he has been teaming up with Kim Champion of the National Street Basketball Association (New York) and Derrick Edwards of Redefined Entertainment (Miami) to enlarge the hip hop club scene in Miami. With one of the biggest events of the NFL Super Bowl XLIV weekend right around the corner, he has found himself in more last minute meetings and a Blackberry with a very low battery. When he was asked about why he chose Miami he simply stated, “ I had been doing a lot of work in other states such as South Carolina, and I realized that I needed to bring it back home and help hype up Florida. All of the reality shows and movies glorify Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and people should be having the same fun in Miami and Orlando. When people hear Miami, they think of drugs, murder, and detectives. It’s time to think of fun, beautiful people, and luxury.” So what does he have his hands in now? A lavish Super Bowl smash at Club Epic located in the Five Star rated River Lounge with Chris Johnson (the #1 running back in the NFL),Kenny Turner(a star running back at Fullerton College in California), Akon, Bobby Valentino, Tyson Beckford, and some of your favorite athletes lined up in the most exclusive sections of the club. If you are in Miami on Saturday night during Super Bowl weekend and you feel like a star, that’s the place to be. This is an event that involves concerts and a fashion show. The cool thing about the line up of celebs for this Super Bowl smash is that G Money has a personal relationship with most of them. He met Akon in 2004 and has completed several projects with him and different affiliates since then. Also, Kenny Turner just so happens to be G Money’s nephew. This youngster isn’t pro yet, but is getting closer by the second. Kenny Turner has been recognized as the Conference Player of the year, First Team All California and first team All American, with 1518 rushing yards, 400 receiving yards, 15 rushing touchdowns, and three receiving touchdowns. What about the City Beautiful? If you are looking for fun in Orlando, you can wait until February 15th and check out what G Money and Hollywood East Entertainment have coordinated. Showcasing live Waka Flocka Flame at Club Tabu. This will be one not to miss, especially since the young rapper has bringing so much buzz to Gucci Mane‘s label. He made a quick come up and is ready to show Orlando some L-O-V-E after Valentine’s Day.

Florida’s

SUPERMAN Promoter

After 12 years in the promotion and entertainment industry, G Money has lost count of all the events he has successfully promoted and planned. From Juvenile to Gucci mane to Trina to Plies and too many others to name…it would be almost impossible not to have attended one of G Money’s often sold out events held across the city. G Money has been a diligent entrepreneur throughout his entire life. He is even mentioned as being a pioneer in Florida’s circle of promoters. For years, G Money has collaborated his established entertainment company with many others in the southern states to push music artists to the top and coordinate the most talked about concerts in Central Florida. With the tireless hours of hard work that goes into each event, G Money believes in this day and time, it is vital to stay focused and driven. He says one must believe in their dreams, and do not allow the next per-

son’s dream to knock you off course. Born and raised in Orlando, G Money can remember getting into trouble over little things at an early age. He learned to overcome his obstacles by learning to deal with people, certain rules, know morals, respect his elders and trust God. Although he has never really counted the number of artist whose career he catapulted, many artists will tell you from their own mouths what his role in the industry has done for their career. “I helped them go street platinum, then the record labels did their work,” G Money modestly says. As a lifelong entrepreneur, G Money hosted his own television show years ago and was the CEO of his own magazine. His entertainment company, Word on da Streets, has been alive for more than a decade, and now has a local newspaper that is distributed in several cities throughout Florida. G Money is motivated to pro-

mote his events and publish the Word on Da Streets newspaper to bring everyone together. “The community is consistently involved in informing everyone of accomplishments and events, and as a whole we are shining!” he says. As an entrepreneur, G Money is no stranger to building a bridge from the streets to the boardroom which is no small feat for most. Nevertheless, G Money knows you have to keep a certain respect within the community, and sometimes it is okay to make things personal however when in the boardroom, you must “keep it all business!” G Money’s energy and state of mind is focused on more than street cred. “I only really want to hear that people have the time of their life at all of my events,” he explains. This industry is not without its difficult times, when things get hard and difficult G Money says he looks to God, his family, and this beautiful community for strength and support. “Whenever I have had a set back, it has always involved me being caught up in someone else’s dream. I started to trust myself, and God helped me to build mountains,” says G Money. You can catch this G Money in the community centers and parks hosting family affairs for the holidays. If you are a weekend person, check him and his buddies out at Club Destiny, where the hottest music artists are showing. Keep your eyes open for G Money’s projects, and consider attending because they are never failures.

Ben-G Ben-G B

en-G been making noise in the Orlando area for over ten years. At 23 years old he is cocky and confident that he is the best rapper bred out of orange county. Managing his own label and working on his new mix tape has kept him pre-occupied for the new year. Last time we sat down with Ben-G his hit single "I'm Gone" was buzzing all through you tube with over !00,000 hits. His highly anticipated new mix tape is yet to be named but being the trendsetter he is it's sure to catch your attention. As I sit down and chop it up with Ben-G he expresses his views on various topics and give the readers his upcoming schedule up to the date of his mix tape debut.

Ben-G, how's life treating been you?

It’s good we been on the grind just trying to do what we do. Working on this new mixtape it’s untitled but we green flaggin!!! What part of Orlando did you grow up in and what high school did you attend?

I grew up in Pine Hills but really all over Orlando. We moved a lot from East colonial and surrounding areas. I attended Evans High School right down the road. I also attended West Orange for a short while. How long have you been in the rap game?

I’ve been in the rap game for twelve years. However, I would say I’ve been taking it seriously the last five years. I felt I could become the best so “F” it and why not try and be the best. What are some of your major influences in and out of the industry?

God first and for most. Some of my major influences in the industry are mostly old school Wu-Tang, Jay-Z, definitely Nas, Lil Wayne and Trick Daddy from the South. For your hit single ‘'I'm Gone’ how did you come up with the concept of the video?

Basically, everybody is GONE on their own type of high. I mean everybody be doing there own thing on a whole new level and it’s just like Plies with “Wasted”. When you mix grey goose and patron you get “I’m Gone”. We shot the video downtown and everybody came and showed loved from local artists such as Preacher. Our next upcoming show is On February 7th at Epic in Miami super bowl Weekend other mainstream artists are Akon and Bobby Valentino. Another show with Wacka Flacka here in

Orlando later on in February. My new mix tape will be dropping on February 20th. The album release party will be at club Epic in Miami. Shot out to Black n’ Mild he will be keeping it crunk all night long on the 1’s and 2’s. What is your day by day activities being that you rap and also own your own label?

Basically, I get up early in the morning thank God that I see another day. Eat breakfast and go to the studio. I have an office in the front and the studio in the back. My business stays and gets done there. DirtyBakerz Ent is the name of the label Ben-G Entertainment. Do you feel like you are one of the top artists coming out of Orlando?

Yes, I most definitely feel that I am one the top artists here. I’m trying to move my music further than Orlando and throughout the nation. I migrated to North Carolina and everybody knows my music. Are u planning a tour or some type of appearance to promote your music?

February 7th at epic in Miami headlining Bobby Valentino and Akon. Feb. 12th at the Coliseum in Tampa other local artist being Drop, Papa Duck, Bloodraw, Young Cash, P.I. Bang, and Show Boy to name a few. February 20th is the album release party for my upcoming mixtape upcoming untitled it will be going down at Epic in Miami. Who has really helped you stay focused on your music and keep your eye on the prize?

My Brother David and my brother Jarvis always were there to support me. My Brother Jarvis spent all his money on filming my first DVD. Wu-Tang was

a big influence them boys slept on my floor. I seen them go out and do shows 20 G’s a night and go back the next night and do it all over again. They really made me want to be successful in the rap game. I was hungry at a young age to be at the top in the industry. How did the worldwide tragedy of Haiti impact you?

That whole event was a huge travesty. I took it hard even though I’m not Haitian or from that country. My roommate Ace was stranded in Haiti for a long time and I know personal stories of friends who have families that are still trapped down in the rubble and aftermath of the earthquake. Our show on February 12th at the Coliseum in Tampa will be a fundraiser for the Haiti Foundation. We f*** wit Wyclef his cousin is my manager so we have much love for Haiti and our deepest prayers go out to the loved ones in that country. Do you have any tips or advice that you can offer some advice to up and coming local artists or teens who like to pursue the music industry as a career?

All I could say is get your money right!!! LOL!!! Nothing is free!!! Get in the studio do two or three songs you got to go hard. Nobody will move on your time. Pursue everything yourself. Unless you like Lil Wayne and have all the hype coming out then it’s not going to go that way. It’s all about who you know look at Nicki Minaj she’s not all that hot but sign with Wayne and she go platinum. Once you get your name out there that’s where the big cash come in. I’m doing singles forget an album. Always remember put God first and everything will fall into place on its own.

Do you have any other comments you will like to share with your fans and the readers?

This new mix tape album dropping at the end of February is not titled yet. I have plenty of features Papa Duck, Preacher, Lil Slate, Rick Ross, and OJ da Juiceman supposed to be on the remix it’s in the works to being a hot album!!! www.flyerpromonow.com

PRO-LEAGUE ON THE COURT! THE NEW

by Kim Champion

On Thursday, April 9, 2009, The National Street Basketball Association Corporation successfully announced the inception of their new professional basketball league to the public at New York City’s largest sports facility, Chelsea Piers and received a warm welcome nationally from supporters including government officials, coaches, athletes, basketball fans, the press and many others.

T

he National Street Basketball Association (NSBA) is a voluntary not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing a non-traditional avenue of opportunity for outstanding basketball athletes (ages 21-38), to try-out and compete on one of their league member teams. The NSBA will incorporate four (4) divisions (East Coast, West Coast, Midwest and International regions) which currently include the following cities: New York, Maryland, North

Carolina, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, Orlando, US Virgin Islands, and the Dominican Republic. NSBA anticipates more cities and countries will join their league divisions for opportunities to gain notoriety and compete professionally. hile the Super Bowl is around the corner, some players better learn to lay low during the off season. According to TMZ, Rams player Steven Jackson just got hit with papers after allegedly beating up his girlfriend Supriya Harris, while 9 months pregnant with his child. Harris claims Jackson, “continued to shove me against the door until his nephew … interceded and yelled, ‘uncle, she has a baby, stop.'" Gorgeous in her own right, actress Vanessa Williams better start looking for a new job, as ABC just announced they are canceling the show "Ugly Betty".

Actor Gary Coleman was spotted being escorted from jail in a wheel chair after his recent release. His bail was set at $1,720 for a domestic violence case, however there’s been a little drama about who actually paid it.

A weekly Entertainment, Legal News & Advice column from Shannon A. Ligon, The Entertainment & Legal Diva And on to some much needed advice... Dear Shannon, My husband of six years had a known gambling problem, but promised he'd quit when we were married. I am pretty sure he's been gambling lately as money has been missing and suddenly reappearing as of late. I hope he won't do anything drastic with the SuperBowl around the corner as we have bills up to our neck from the holidays. What should I do? I feel like I need to choose between my man and the money. - Man over Money Dear Man over Money: Gambling is highly addictive and very popular among men. While it is often a source of entertainment it can become a financial and emotional strain to others. If you think it has become addictive in nature, try getting him help through a support group or counselor. This is a problem he had before the marriage; I encourage you to support and help your loved one through this difficult time. Also, try to make some preventive measure to keep you and your family's money secure. Good Luck!

Best Regards, Shannon “If you must play, decide upon three things at the start: the rules of the game, the stakes, and the quitting time." - Chinese Proverb Love. Live. And Entertain, Shannon A. Ligon, Entertainment & Legal Diva www.LigonLawGroup.com 407.897-SHAN

T

ime to order the wings, pizza, and beer because it's Superbowl time! If you won't be in Miami celebrating with the NFL and other celebrities then make sure you find a good party to attend to watch the game. Although I predicted the Vikings and Colts fighting it out, it's actually the Saints and the Colts. This is the Saints' first Superbowl appearance in Franchise history. The Colts however are no stranger to the Superbowl, as a matter of fact the last time they played for the Lombardi trophy was in Miami. I haven't decided where I'm going to be come game time, but I will be rooting for the Saints. They are the underdogs and have played well all Payton Manning year (except that loss to the sorry Bucs). I predicted the Vikings last article and as we all know I was wrong. They made too many mistakes at crucial moments and fumbled more times than I can remember. It just wasn't their time. Other than the Saints being the underdogs my reason for wanting them to win is that they play with a drive that shows they want this and their not stopping until they get it. Some people may be a little concerned that Drew Brees and the Saints don't have

the experience that Payton Manning and the Colts have. To that I say "you never know what you can do until you put your mind it." The Saints not only want this for themselves but for the city of New Orleans as well. The team was almost moved to another city after Hurricane Katrina. What better a way to show the power of resilience than to win a Superbowl? So, whether I'm in Miami or sitting infront of someone's 60in Plasma I'm going to be chanting with the rest of the Saints fans "Who Dat Gone Beat Dem Colts!"
