Scott Keach

Aussie Jumping Overseas Scott is planning to compete in the $1.6 million dollar class on the 27th of March if he is able to ride following recent injury. The following week after is the CSI 5 star in Wellington, after which, Fedor will have a short break and then he plans to do a 3 star in late May in Kentucky, a 4 star in the first week in June in Pennsylvania and a 5 star one week later at the Tryon Equestrian centre in North Carolina. Assuming all is well with the plans for Rio Olympics, Scotts last competition will be a 4 star in mid July. Scott currently has six horses, two are younger and green, two are jumping 1.45m and ready to start jumping Grand Prix very soon. Viriato has placed in World Cup qualifiers and 3 star Grand Prix and will do his first 4 star in June. Scott is always busy and also trains a young rider who has been jumping the 1.50 m classes since she was 16

and this young lady also has six horses show jumping, of which 3 are Grand Prix horses. He also trains another jumping rider with several horses and helps two event riders with their show jumping, one who is in the US team for Rio. On non-show days the usual routine for Scott is to tend to ride his own horses first and then train other people. Scott has a great support team and a very good girl who rides regularly for him, that he has been training in Show Jumping for over two years and acknowledges that he has great owners, without whom life would be much more difficult. As an example Show days can be busy for Scott. The nearby local show (12 km away) goes for 10 weeks straight with 5 consecutive jumping rings competing from Wed to Sun each week, therefore organizing the day ahead really well can be important!

Great Loss To The Community

MyEA - Online Now!

Jill Mosey

Equestrian Australia and the State Branches in conjunction with Nominate have launched MyEA – an online portal for EA members.

It is with sadness that we advise of the recent passing of Jill Mosey, whom many Equestrian SA Members, particularly in the Show Jumping community, will remember with much fondness. Jill was a very active and staunch supporter of Show Jumping in this State, an interest shared with her family. She was a regular volunteer and hard working Committee Member for the Northern District Show Jumping Club for many years. Always dedicated to the task at hand and would get the job done on time with a smile, nothing was too much trouble.

MyEA consolidates all the important functions that members need to access. Through MyEA you can complete your rider and manage other details, view results and more. MyEA provides greater efficiencies in the way EA members renew their membership and allowing members to complete tasks anywhere, anytime. Through MyEA members can do the following: • Renew your membership

Jill’s passion was extended to the wider Equestrian community through her business Just Ribbons supplying beautiful quality ribbons, rosettes and sashes for the many Equestrian and Agricultural Shows and events held in South Australia.

• Update your membership details

Her attention to detail and can do attitude, made Jill a pleasure to deal with and she will be very much missed.

• Enter Nominate Events

We extend our deepest sympathy to husband Peter, children Kerry, Kym, Richard and families.

• See upcoming events which you have entered (only available for Events which use Nominate online entry system)

6 | FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | AUTUMN 2016

From left to right: Caroline Jones, Lucinda, Judy Whyntie

Another successful clinic from Lucinda Green MBE Lucinda, who needs no introduction, concluded her Australia wide series of Eventing clinics with a 2 day Clinic in mid-February at Reynella arranged by Caroline Jones & Judy Whyntie. The riders attending the clinic ranged from younger, less experienced riders learning the fundamentals of SAFE, enjoyable cross country riding to older, more experienced riders refining their techniques and at all times being reminded of how to achieve clear and under time rounds SAFELY. Lucinda has been coming to SA for several years now and there is always high demand to attend her clinics. 20 lucky riders benefited from her wealth of knowledge that covers so many more facets than just cross country riding. Lucinda manages to fit in many topics with lengthy conversations. One of her pet subjects is bits and bitting and she carries with her from UK a bag of bits that she suggests riders use and experiment with during the clinics. Some of these provided dramatic results. General horsemanship tips on horse health, gear, feeding tips and general horsemanship were brought into the lessons. Lucinda talks endlessly and her passion for teaching is always apparent. It was compulsory for all riders to attend both days as on the first day Lucinda utilises complicated lines and angles designed to make horses “see” for themselves and work things out with quick footwork - this did not necessarily relate to the same amount of strides in combinations for all horses and, in fact, she was quite pleased to see horses put in half strides in order to sort things out for themselves – much like what might happen out on course. The second day saw these principles being put into practice with great emphasis on the way horses see fences (after a length explanation of how horses’ eyes actually work!) Some of Lucinda’s teaching methods include using acronyms such as ELBOW. This stands for ENGINE,

LINE, BALANCE “OW”. “OW” is what happens when riders don’t have enough of the E, L, B!! Lucinda loves teaching at Reynella. She is a strong believer in horses working on grass arenas from which they can get more spring as opposed to manufactured “perfect” arenas that so often are too deep. The variety and size of XC fences at Reynella also makes coaching varying levels of riders easy. Her only disappointment with the course was the disappearance of the ditch. She likes to train over ditches (seen regularly on xc courses) as they are a valuable tool for teaching vision and confidence. Whilst it was originally declared to be the last Lucinda Clinic, mainly due to the expense involved due to the bad exchange rate between Australian $ and English £, the level of interest was such that we will consider running another next year. The help from riders (and spectators) in setting up, doing rails and also packing up was greatly appreciated and is another contributing factor in making a 2017 Clinic a distinct possibility. Thank you!! Horseware Australia donated a pair of Ice Vibe Boots to the most improved rider at each clinic in Australia. It was a close decision but the award finally went to Liz Hayman. Well done Liz but you were not alone in learning and benefiting from Lucinda’s teaching.

EA Statement - Helmet Standard Equestrian Australia can advise that Helmet Standard EN1384 will remain effective until 31 December 2016. In addition, a new standard VG1 has been added to the General Regulations effective immediately. As of 1 January 2017 helmets with the EN1384 standard will not be permitted under EA’s General Regulations. As per the EA General Regulations, Equestrian Australia highly recommends the use of helmets that conform to Australian Standard AS/NZS 3838, as this standard provides for more stringent testing and further periodic retesting.

From The Equestrian SA Chair The ESA Youth Development and Awards night was a highlight of the past few months. Many members attended the dinner at the SAJC and it was wonderful to see so many young people attend who participated in the Youth Development weekend. Included in this issue are profiles of the winners of the scholarships. Another highlight of the evening was the awarding of the Jim Dunn Award to Gillian Rolton. In late January the Board invited all Discipline Chairs to a meeting so that information could be shared between the Board and the Disciplines. The agenda included tabling the first 6 months financials of ESA, tabling of the Strategic Plan, discussion on training for the Discipline Committees and Officials, and reports from all disciplines on their activities. At the meeting all disciplines discussed problems, issues and suggestions with each other which was beneficial to other disciplines. The ‘Joint Chairs’ meeting will continue to be held quarterly and the feedback from the Chairs is that it is very worthwhile to get together. The Board wishes to review the Youth Development Scholarship weekend to see if it can be altered, changed and or improved. It has been the same formula for many years and a review is necessary to ensure we are meeting the goals of the Scholarship. At the next meeting the Board will raise with the Disciplines a review and proposed suggestions on the format and delivery of the Youth Development Scholarship to see if it can be redesigned to better meet the needs of the ESA juniors.

We are looking forward to Stuart’s contributions to the Board. Recently we have sent a survey on the Horses Mouth. I do hope many members have responded. It is important we receive your feedback to ensure we are meeting the communication needs of the membership. On April 17 – 19, ESA will be staging the Young Rider Expo at the Royal Show grounds. The Expo covers a variety of horse topics, from instruction to correct feeding to safety procedures for horses, fitness for humans, and sports psychology. The cost is $150 per person and horse with full catering for riders included in the cost. We do hope our young members will participate in the Expo, to further their knowledge. In the coming months, ESA members have many exciting events. The Show Jumping Championships are being held on April 8 -10, the Interschool Championships on April 15-16, the Dressage Championships on April 30 – May 1, and the Vaulting is hosting the National Championships on April 22 - 24. I do hope many members compete or go and watch these fabulous events, being the showcase of our sports. See you there!

Elizabeth Fricker Chairperson - Equestrian SA

The 2016 – 2020 Strategic Plan has been sent to Discipline Committees for feedback and in the next month or so, once the feedback has been reviewed and included, will be put on the ESA website for members comment and input. Please take the time to review the Plan, as it is your ESA, your plan and we need to ensure that the plan is taking the direction the membership wants. I am pleased to report that the casual vacancy on the ESA Board has been filled by Stuart Platt. Stuart not only has extensive knowledge and experience in equestrian sport, he has very strong skills in Business including Not for Profit experience.

SA’S SCOTT KEACH CREATES HISTORY WITH RIO SELECTION By Sharon Cimarosti manager@equestriansa.com.au

Show jumpers Edwina Tops-Alexander and South Australian Scott Keach, along with their respective horses Caretina De Joter and Fedor, have earned early selection on the Rio 2016 Olympic Team with their outstanding performances. For 51-year-old South Australian Scott Keach, RIO is his second Olympics and remarkably 28 years since his Olympic debut in the Eventing Team at the Seoul Games in 1988. Scott has surpasses the Australian record for the longest time between competing at the Games. Scott and Fedor have won a high level 4 star event and he knows he has a horse that is well suited to the Olympic challenges. Fedor was purchased in Europe three years ago as a fairly inexperienced horse and Scott has produced him up to Grand Prix level.

Things started falling in to place two years ago and that is when the Rio Olympics became a real focus to Scott. “The horse has the ability to jump any jump, and jumps at the Olympic Games are big and they jump several days in a row over big jumps, so a horse with scope that can jump these jumps without too much difficulty hopefully has an advantage as the Games go on. Fedor also has a great mind in the ring and lifts to big occasions.” Keach took a big break from the sport in the early 90s and after moving to Florida seven years ago he started riding seriously again. He had always wanted to try show jumping again after loving it so much when he was younger. Scott’s journey to get to a second Olympic Team has been relatively unknown compared with Tops-Alexander, who has 200,000 followers on social media and has won some of the most prestigious events in the world.

CARRIAGE DRIVING

14 | FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | AUTUMN 2016

WAYNE MATTEN Wayne spent many years Show Jumping and Course building he then took up Camp Drafting. Wayne has recently taken up driving. He drove “trotters in his youth “ so the transition to Carriage Driving was easy.

Pleasant in February. He has an interest in course designing which will be a great asset to our sport as well as a great knowledge of saddlery and harness.

At Wayne’s fist Carriage Driving event he placed second at a driven dressage competition and won several ribbons at a Harness show at Mt

Carriage Driving Update EQUESTRIAN SA Carriage Driving Committee has started planning for the next FEI driving event to be held 5th, 6th and 7th November in conjunction with the Aus3de. We are hoping to hold both a one star and two star event this year . The later will consist of driven dressage and cone driving on the Friday and a Marathon on the Sunday. We will have a gap day on the Saturday when we can enjoy the Aus3de cross country. After discussions with Aus3de Event Director Gillian Rolton we are hopeful that we will be able to modify some of the cross country jumps to use as obstacles in the Marathon course. We are also looking to hold a clinic / judges workshop following the event utilising our FEI judges and officials. Carriage Driving will also make an appearance on the main arena this year with a planned Jump and Drive on the Saturday night. Other events will include EQUESTRIAN SA Show Driving Championships and EQUESTRIAN SA CDE Championships later in the year.

MORGAN LINDH 10 year old son of Mark and Belinda Lindh has also started driving an experienced pony twice his age. Morgan drove his first set of cones recently and only knocked four down!

Kathryn Mitchell & Cooramin Ramiro

State Champs In April! The first quarter of the year has been and gone – can you believe it? We’ve already seen some wonderful events happening throughout South Australia, and as this issue goes to print, the 2016 SA Dressage Championships will be upon us. What a start to the year! Most recently, we saw our South Australian representatives well at the exciting Dressage and Jumping with the Stars event in Werribee. This was again a wonderful event, with a reinvigorated Shopping Village. Congratulations to those who represented us so well – it was great to see familiar faces in the arena, with plenty of SA supporters on the sidelines. Congratulations to those riders Cooper Oborn and HV Sonnet and Fairbanks Picasso, Heather Currie and Grets and Up to Go, Cecile Buckton and Royal Valuta, Kathryn Wright and Cooramin Ramiro Hit, and Fiona Guthrie and Don Duchovny. It is a wonderful achievement to compete at this prestigious event – so, well done to all. The SA Dressage Championships are coming very soon! With April 30 / May 1 not as far away as it seems, we hope you have all got your entries in. With sponsors flowing in and the subcommittee working hard to bring you an exciting event, the State Championships will be a showcase for our state. With a small group organising,

we always welcome volunteers, so if you can spare some time to pencil or help with other activities, please do contact the committee on dressagesouthaustralia@ gmail.com. We are seeing interest from interstate riders, as well as regional combinations, so are looking forward to a wonderful event at the Mount Crawford Dressage Club. Please note that the 2016 SA State Championships will also play host to a Riders Meeting, where DSA Riders Rep, Ruth Schneeberger, will update and take feedback. Should you have any specific issues you would like raised at this meeting, please contact dressagesouthaustralia@gmail.com.

SPOTLIGHT ON Cooper Oborn Cooper Oborn is an up and coming rider, recently listed on the SA State Squad, and regularly seen out and about with his impressive team of horses. Cooper spends plenty of time on the road, attending interstate events, representing SA professionally and often seen on the winner’s podium. We caught up with Cooper while he was travelling to Werribee for DWTS. How long have you been riding? I’ve been riding for 15 years, I started as a 10 year old. Current horses in your team? Coaches Corner. So you want to be an EA Coach or Official? All EA Coaches and Officials qualifications are developed to meet Australian Institute of Sport guidelines. Coaches are qualified under the National Coach Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) and Officials under the National Officials Accreditation Scheme (NOAS). The AIS support coaches and officials in all sports and have Community courses on line to help you understand what will be required as a coach or official. These courses are free and on line available here http://www.ausport.gov.au/ Coaches Coaches begin at Introductory Level and can progress from there to Level One to Three. However they are only insured to teach at the level they have been accredited and Introductory is at basic beginner rider level. To start the Introductory Coaching, candidates need to have already completed pre requisites.

Once they have all this they can purchase the Introductory General Coach workbooks but before they can actually start any Intro Coaching Assessments, they must attend two days of training in what is now called ‘Orientation for Introductory Coaching’. This has a Theory component and generally this covers •

Basic structure of the NCAS system and EA

Risk Management for facilities and events

Safety both personal and horse/rider

Appropriate dress and saddlery

Coaches Code of Ethics

Child Safety/Harassment/Abuse of power

Coach Insurance (briefly as now we refer candidates to the Insurance web pages)

Coaching styles/communication styles

Conflict management

Physiology and psychology of the rider and their needs

Introductory Riding

Introductory Horse Management

Creating lesson plans and delivering them

ASC Community Coaching course

Assessing horse and rider

Police Working with Children check

Tracks/ figures/school movements

Current First Aid including CPR

Controlling the ride.

ESA membership

The next day is Practical with candidates delivering a lesson plan (maybe two) they have prepared the night before and receiving feedback and guidance. They watch each other and are expected to help each other. They also have practical sessions in Risk Management, Coach Observation and a Theory Exam. After these two days the candidate is expected to organize their own practice sessions with a Coach Educator. Under the current terms from EA, candidates can no longer purchase their own Trainee Insurance but are only covered by insurance when they are under the direct supervision of an NCAS CE. The next course for Introductory courses is expected to take place mid year 2016 and you can register your interest in attending by contacting Suzanne Skibinski on email at coordinator@equestriansa.com.au Judges The requirements for Judges are all determined in the Rules for each different Discipline. Judges will always have to complete and application which usually describes their equestrian competition background and training. There are also practical activities which need to be completed before the application can be considered by the particular Discipline State Committee. Dressage Dressage applicants must also complete an Open Rule Book Test (ORBT) which is sent to the ESA Office for marking. As it is an ‘open book’ test, it is an opportunity for new judges to familiarize themselves with the current Rule book. As well, Dressage applicants must also attend a Seminar for new judges and also do some ‘Shadow Judging’ which is an opportunity to Judge a ‘live’ competition and then compare their results and comments with a qualified Judge Educator or Mentor getting immediate feedback on their judging progress. All this information goes next to the State Dressage Committee for their approval and the new Judge is qualified at ‘G’ level. Progress after that is encouraged and supported by the Dressage Judges Committee. See the application form to get started here http://www.equestrian.org. au/sites/default/files/EA%20Dressage%20Judge%20 Application%20Form%20G%20Level%20judge.pdf Show Horse Judge applications for Show Horse are similar to the above. These applicants must also show their knowledge and experience in the application and complete an ORBT as well. These judges start at Provisional level and as their experience grows and they are invited to attend and judge State competitions so they can progress to State and even National

judging. The application is here http://www.equestrian. org.au/sites/default/files/NJAS%20Show%20Horse%20 judge%20application.pdf Jumping Again, the qualifications and accreditation requirements are all set out in the Rules for this discipline. Applicants can focus on Course Building or Judging or both depending on their interests. There is an application to become a Provisional Judge and a structured assessment process which is usually conducted at the bi-annual seminars held for Officials. Progress to higher levels is gained by experience and being mentored by senior officials. Stewards All disciplines use Stewards, especially Eventing and Jumping and a new course for Stewards is being planned later this year. Other disciplines all have processes to encourage and introduce candidates to the job of being an official, whether a Judge, a Course Builder, a Technical Delegate or Steward. All Officials and Coaches also have to be re- accredited every three years by providing evidence of attending update seminars and of their official activities. More information about becoming a Coach or Official is available on the National EA website under Education or go to the Rules for specific Disciplines or call the office on 8391 0488. Next Coach and Rider Update. The State Coach Committee have invited one of the Sports Institute psychologists to give a seminar for riders, coaches and judges in July 2016. Geof Boylan-Marsland is a Psychologist at SASI and Director of Mind Matters Psychology. His specialities include performance enhancement, mental skills training, improving focus and attentional skills, emotional management skills, goal setting, competition preparation, managing the competition environment, building self-confidence/esteem, team building, communication and injury management. Eventing SA Riders Out And About Report from Di Schaeffer on behalf of the Eventing SA committee

Smokin’ Sun was 10th in the CCI** at Tattersalls in May 2015 against opposition who were World Champions, Olympic Gold Medallists and Badminton winners !

While I was at Lockington and judging at the water jump, eagerly watching Smokin’Sun’s little sister, Canterbury Sun Rose cantering around the XC course, our top horse, Bertie was admitted to hospital in UK fighting for his life. For those of you who missed Wendy’s tragic Facebook post….

He was my greatest hope for the future and was in work preparing for CIC3* leading up to Bramham CCI3*………But, although he was still working well in dressage & jumping, by mid February his continuing, and recent weight loss, concerned me enough to request a gastroscope & blood picture. Gastric ulcers were only a minor concern !. Blood picture showed major kidney protein dysfunction. His kidney function then deteriorated dramatically over a week - requiring hospitalisation, fluid therapy (like renal dialysis) but all to no avail….

Devastatingly, I have had to euthanise my exciting 2* Eventer Smokin’ Sun today (Friday March 11th 2016) who deteriorated quickly with a recent onset of acute kidney failure. Such a gentle giant standing at 17.2hh, he was an exciting prospect - impressive in the dressage ring and an amazing galloper & jumper XC. RIP Bertie #YouWentBeforeYourTime #GreenerPasturesNow

That said, I revert to the splendid event that Lockington Horse Trials presented over the March 5/6 weekend, with some comments from me as the fence judge at the water. Brilliant going cross country on slightly greener grass down south, thanks to Phyll Whellams, Property Owner and Tracey Leigh. Excellent viewing spectacle over the course, brilliantly designed & built by Tracey and we were all very grateful for the ocean breezes that kept the predicted temperatures a little cooler at Victor. Interestingly the 2 water jumps caused fewer problems this year than last few years, and were generally more positively & better ridden from Introductory up. Two riders in EvA 105 had faults at the initial fence before the big pond but other faults were well spread around the 105 course with Louise Chapman & Kirby Park Exquisite winning from Danni Hampton & Omega Moon with young Interschooler, Connie Miller & Don Roccado in third. In CNC1* Robert Hutcheson & Allegro Bravo scored the win for the fastest clear round, of only 4 clear XC, (much to Rob’s surprise !) but refusals & glance off ’s surprisingly accounted for several of the more fancied competitors, however the water complex was jumped faultlessly by all. Anthony Thomas & Levitation were second with Isabeau Garner & Even Stephen third.

Mad march saw numerous interschool riders compete successfully throughout local and interstate shows and events including Mundulla Show, Eyre Peninsula Show, Lockington Horse Trials, S.A dressage association show, Tanunda Ag Show, Southern Vales Dressage show and the Waikerie Easter Show. Recently, EQUESTRIAN SA and the Eastern Fleurieu School played host to the Interschool Gymkhana held at the Strathalbyn polo grounds which saw over a hundred primary and secondary school riders compete in a variety of encourage and competitive events. The show ran successfully and it was great to see so many riders and schools engaging in team spirit and sportsmanship among each other. We congratulate Seymour College on winning the overall highpoint school trophy and thank all schools, riders and volunteers for helping the weekend run smoothly. Next on the Interschool calendar we have a busy couple of months with the Kirkcaldy Park Horse Trials, Jim Dunn Memorial, South Australian Showjumping Champs, Two Wells Horse trials, South Australian Dressage champs, Reynella Horse trials and some exciting new regional clinics. Please make sure you get your entries into these shows and clinics and if you have not already nominated, send your Interschool nominations into the EQUESTRIAN SA office. Youth Development Show Jumping Finalists The Equestrian SA Youth Development Scholarship weekend was held in 28th-29th November, 2015 at Kirkcaldy Park. The show jumping finalists were Courtney de Barrow, Troy Wollard, Amelia Ramsey, Phoebe Bowen, Sarah Wigney, Kate Crauford, Ruth Fisher-Bent, Alana Livesy, Chrissy Grear and Chloe Wedd. Unfortunately, due to the Pinery fires Troy was unable to make it to the scholarship weekend. At the last minute, due to a hiccup with Scott Keach’s travel arrangements, Clive Reed stepped in to be coach and co-selector for the award. A great bunch of young show jumpers spent the weekend showing off their prowess on their horses under Clive’s instruction and built a show jumping course under the supervision of Andrew Paech. They also were individually interviewed which, among other things, tested their general knowledge on show jumping and their grasp of the rules. There was considerable

cramming and studying of the rule book leading into their interviews, which was amusing and undertaken in good spirit!! Thanks to Tessa Fairweather and staff at the ESA office who organised a great weekend. Thanks to Clive and Andrew for their involvement too. The finalists then gathered at the ESA Awards night in February 2016. Congratulations to Kate Crauford who was the awarded the winner of the “Be Active” Show Jumping Youth Development Scholarship for the second year in a row. The scholarship is valued at $500 and is to be used to help develop horsemanship skills. It is expected that the recipient will use the scholarship for coaching. Nominations for the scholarship are called around October each year and ESA encourage all show jumping riders under the age of 21 to consider applying.

2016 Thomas Foods International South Australian Show Jumping State Championships Jumping SA wishes to thank all our sponsors for their very generous support of the 2016 State Championships. We are particularly excited to welcome Thomas Foods International as our naming rights sponsor for the next three years. Thomas Foods International is a SA based company that began operations in 1988. Of course, the business has grown and changed a lot since then. Today, Thomas Foods International has annual revenue well in excess of $1 billion, and they are Australia’s largest 100% family-owned meat-processing company. Their business operates with strong family values. Chris Thomas provides the leadership and vision, his son and CEO, Darren, drives their growth. TFI will always have deep respect for South Australian roots – while they take on the world. TFI believe that it’s about remembering the things that underpin everything they do: the quality of their livestock – and the dedication of their people. October each year and ESA encourage all show jumping riders under the age of 21 to consider applying. “These are the real secrets to our success – and we’re extremely proud of both.” –Thomas Foods International We would also like to thank our other major sponsors, Chris White of Sambec Sheds, the Lindh Family and Ross Air and the newly formed partnership of Lara

Pizimolas, Kate Schlichting and Carla Cerchi who now head up the increasingly popular Dapple EQ. John Patterson Tribute 135cm Class As most people will know, July 2015 saw the sad passing of greatly respected man in the Show Jumping world. John Patterson was not only the greatest of gentleman but he made a huge contribution to our MACKIE sport. This year we dedicated the major class on the EXPLORATIONS ANNE & DAVID first day to his memory. The Patterson family are very LINDH kindly supporting this class and we welcomed his wife Helen Patterson, to present the prizes at the State Show Jumping Championships. VIP Marquee We thank White Marquee Event Hire and Renniks Hire and for their support for the VIP marquee. The VIP Marquee this year was known as the White Marquee VIP Pavilion. From this vantage point could watch all the action in the Sambec Sheds Ring from the best seat in the house! Lunch along with beverages, morning and afternoon tea was served to all in attendance. We also held JEFF EVANS TESTIMONIAL and RIDERS REUNION with great success. Live Streaming We were very excited this year to provide Live Streaming the Sambec Sheds Ring on the Saturday and the Sunday. This was proudly brought to you by Pryde’s EasiFeed. The link is still up now if you want to review the action post event. https://livestream.com/accounts/18088090/ sashowjumpingchampionships.

Victoria Fricker

Riders With Bright Futures Ahead Victoria Fricker CARRIAGE DRIVING

I was very proud and absolutely delighted and honoured to be awarded the ESA Carriage Driving Scholarship for a second year. My sister and I have been around show horses all our lives. When I was ten, the Norris family introduced both of us to Carriage Driving. Over the next few years I was fortunate to be able to drive one of the Norris family’s harness ponies, ‘Timmy’ in harness classes at Agricultural shows and some classes at the Adelaide Royal. I was also able to get a taste of CDE’s competing with Protea of Anne Lindhs. Protea although in her 20s still enjoyed competing especially when she could go fast! I was so fortunate to drive Protea, she was a gorgeous and patient girl. I learnt so much about competing in CDE’s from both Anne and Protea! Once my mother and Aunt realized I was very interested in driving and wanted to pursue it further, we purchased a harness Shetland, Greenhills Low Rider aka Louis. Louis had already competed at Royal show

level and knew his way around the Carriage driving ring. Late last year we had Silkwood Nutkin broken into harness. Nutkin has been most successful in the Show hack ring, retiring after winning at the Champion Show Pony ne 12hh at the National Show Horse Championships in 2014. She has commenced showing with Kim Norris and I have been driving her at home, I look forward to showing her this year. Last year I was able to use the funds for lessons with both Vince Corvi and Bram Chardon. I benefited greatly from these lessons and look forward to utilizing the scholarship funds for more lessons with experts in the field. I wish to thank both the ESA and the Carriage Driving committee for organizing the coaching sessions with Mrs Shirley Crossley and arranging the training day. It was an informative and fun, both my pony and I learnt so much.

Rebecca Vandepeear My name is Rebecca and I am 18 years old. I vault at Quicksilver Equestrian Vaulting Academy where I am coached by Wendy Singlehurst and compete on Merlin, lunged by Gail Beattie. I have been vaulting for about nine years now and have lived and trained in many states, including New South Wales, Western Australia and finally South Australia. I compete in the “advanced level and in CVIJ**. My most significant achievement in the past was training for and competing at the first ever World Vaulting Championships for Juniors in Ermelo, Netherlands in 2015. This 6 month experience alone has taught me more about my sport than the whole nine years I have been vaulting. I am proud to say that I have worked with many world class vaulters in the past, including current and three time female World Champion, Joanne Eccles, and many more athletes considered legends in the sport.

Rebecca Vanderpeer

VAULTING

I look forward to achieving more goals in the future. I plan on studying in Germany next year, where I hope to join a vaulting club there and receive top class training to represent Australia the best I can. The contacts I hope to make in the next couple of years will help me achieve another large goal of mine to represent Australia as a senior individual at the World Championships in 2018. There are a number of goals I am going to achieve within my club. I want to continue training our two newest horses; Dan and Sly. I believe that a successful athlete needs a strong foundation, which is why I want to focus on training our up and coming horses, which will only bring positive things to my team mates and myself.

Ashleigh Westcott My name is Ashleigh Westcott, I am 18 years old, I have been riding since the time I could walk. I have been eventing EA competitively for approximately five years. I work at Danson Dressage under the expert guidance of Heather Currie, based in Birdwood SA. My goals and ambitions are to bring on my two young horses to be training and competing at the highest level they can in not only eventing but also dressage and show jumping. My next ultimate goal is to compete at the Adelaide International Horse Trials on a horse

EVENTING

that I have brought on myself. I am also aiming to get selected for the State eventing squad in 2017. I feel very grateful to have been given this scholarship as it will help me this year with getting more lessons that will go towards helping me reaching my goals and ambitions. I have found that the opportunity for this scholarship is great motivation for all JNR/Young Riders as the riders get the feeling that people understand and believe in their riding and horsemanship in all aspects of any discipline.

Kate Crauford I have been riding for as long as I can remember. Starting at pony club and finding interest in eventing before changing to showjumping. At the age of 7 I competed in the State Pony Club ODE on a once in a life time pony who is currently aged 27 and is lent out to a young girl down the road. I have been exclusively showjumping from the age of 10 and have been lucky enough to compete on multiple horses. In 2015 I competed all over South Australia, Victoria and also in Sydney. One of my competition highlights for the year was competing in Part 2 at the Adelaide Royal on SL Itza Worry. The track on the final day was around 145cm high, and whilst I didn’t place I was very proud to have only 2 rails down for the week. Other competition highlights include qualifying 2nd for the Super Junior Final on Master Darnley at the Sydney Summer Classic, Winning Champion Junior Showjumper at the Whittlesea Show (Victoria) and winning two 120cm Junior Championships at Boneo on

Kate Crauford

SHOW JUMPING

2 different horses on the same weekend. I am particularly interested in producing young horses and am excited about my young Oaks horse which we purchased late 2015. He has placed 2nd in a couple of well contested D Grade Championships and I am excited to be taking him to Jumping with the Stars in March 2016. Last year I was fortunate enough to travel to Western Australia with one of my horses to live, train and work with Glen, Liane and Caitlin Bolger. Whilst there I enjoyed a clinic with Rod Brown and competed at a number of shows with my horse. I look forward to travelling to the West again this year. The Scholarship weekend is a lot of fun as it gets a great bunch of jumpers together in a relaxed environment. Thank you to Equestrian SA for continuing to support these weekends and I would encourage all riders to consider applying in 2016.

Phoebe Seneca DRESSAGE

I started riding at the age of nine when my parents finally agreed to let me go to a riding school. We got weekly lessons and after a while I got to go to my first show with their support. This was where I found my love for the competition ring and knew that I wanted to compete at the highest level. At the age of ten my parents bought me my first horse (Ruby) and we joined the Clare Horse and Pony Club. With the support from the pony club I found the discipline of Dressage I loved it and I discovered that I could get my horse to carry me through amazing movements at this stage this was just a leg yield but you know. This was when I set my sights that I was going to be an Olympian and represent my country doing the sport I love – Dressage. In 2011 I started to compete in dressage competitions and have grown so much

as a rider and trainer because of this. I competed in the Pony Club State Championships 3 years in a row on three different ponies (Tommy, Pumba and Huey). Because I wanted to do more dressage we started to compete outside of pony club eg. SADA. My main Highlight of my career so far other than receiving this Scholarship would be competing in the Pony Club National Championships as I was lucky enough to be one of the 6 riders selected. In late 2015 we were encouraged to join EA so we did so I haven’t experience much yet but the scholarship weekend was ran amazingly and I would like to say another massive thankyou to the coaches, selectors and everyone that made the weekend possible. Winning this scholarship is going to help me out so much as I just got a new horse who I hope to get competing at a higher level.

Abbie Bernardo SHOW HORSE

This year I was fortunate enough to win the 2015 Be Active Youth Development Scholarship for the Show Horse discipline on my galloway Elvis. This was my 5th year running in the scholarship program, I have thoroughly enjoyed every year that I have competed in this event. I feel we have a very strong youth pathway for young riders within Equestrian South Australia, I have always attended the mid-year youth development weekend and last year I attended the development pathway camp at Wayville all of these experiences have been very informative and have helped improve my riding and general horsemanship. I started riding from a very young age I was sitting on horses before I was on my own two feet, I got my first pony when I was two a grey Shetland, Rosie who taught me the basics in riding. I then got my second pony Blondie a Rivington mare

Abbie Bernardo

who I began my riding journey through Gawler River Pony Club. I then began getting lessons and staying with Louisa Smith, this is where my show career began. From the lead rides, to lessons on the lunge I started riding Dunelm Sequin, who I competed on for a few seasons in my rider classes and smartest on Parade this was the beginning of my show life. I fell in love with going to shows with the people, the horses, and the atmosphere. I then went on to purchase my own show horse Wynara Chilli, a large show hunter pony and shortly after my small hunter galloway Wynara Entertainer, who will be my main focus this season due to year 12 commitments. My main ambition for the future in Show Horse is to represent South Australia at the EA Nationals.
