Equestrian SA Chair Report Our Australian teams have also done us proud at World Equestrian Games aka WEG with a number of disciplines now fully qualified for Tokyo in 2020. More importantly our SA Members competing at WEG have done us proud with their excellence in competition as a superb effort from Vaulters, Steph Dore and Jamie Hocking, as well as Show Jumper Scott Keach and in difficult circumstances Stella Harbison – Endurance.

Dear Members, Three months has flown and we are now right into the swing of the Spring Agricultural Show Circuit in South Australia with a lot of our Members out and about in competition with their horse. Many members have performed extremely well at the recent Royal Show (Adelaide) and others are currently away in Melbourne and other interstate venues competing and doing our State proud. Interschool is currently attending the National Championship competition in Werribee Vic, and we wish them well as they say GO TEAM SA! The Show horse annual prestigious Horse of the Year Show is almost here and I thank the Show Horse Working Party and all of your helpers for making this event happen. I also wish all the competitors all the best and look forward to seeing them parade before interstate judges at the Royal Adelaide Show grounds in October.

The ESA Annual General Meeting has come and gone, and it was encouraging to see so many attend, and then participate in a general forum. The new Board will attempt to investigate suggestions and where possible seek further member input into resolving some issues Discipline Committees will be working hard to make your chosen interests happen, so please support these volunteers where possible. As members we thank all volunteers that have retired off of each of the Discipline Committees for your time and commitment, as well as welcome and thank the new faces that have offered their services to their equestrian sport. Things are afoot to organise the next Youth Development weekend, and all the Disciplines Committees will be involved to make this a great weekend for our younger riders. So I wish you all well and please contact any Board member if you have ideas or wish to clarify anything that is causing you concern going forward. Peter Graham Equestrian SA Board Chair

Jump Off ‘Life After Racing’ TV series launches on Seven Network Broadcast details: Episode one – 30 September Sydney & Brisbane – 3pm Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Tasmania – 3:30pm Jump Off is an exciting new reality television format where five teams compete for $100,000 in prize money. Hosted by Hamish McLachlan and produced by Showmakers Equestrian, the series features off the track race horses and promotes the lifetime care of thoroughbreds.

The highly anticipated series which marries the sport of horse racing and show jumping will be broadcast on Seven Network from Sunday 30 September. Replays of Jump Off will air on Racing.com (Ch 78) three times a week – Monday evening at 6:30pm, Saturday at 8:30pm and Sunday mornings at 8:30am. Jump Off features a line-up of Australia’s best racehorse trainers and each trainer is paired with an Olympic or champion show jumping rider. Broadcast over the duration of the popular Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, Jump Off includes some of the biggest names in racing with David Hayes of the Lindsay Park powerhouse, Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir, multiple Group 1- winning trainer Mick Price, former jockey turned trainer Patrick Payne, and Godolphin Australia’s Head Trainer – James Cummings.

Jump Off’s show jumping riders include equestrian legend and three-time Olympian Vicki Roycroft, current Australian Show Jumping Champion and WEG competitor Jamie Kermond, Olympians Peter McMahon and Russell Johnstone and former Australian Show Jumping Champion and coach, David Cameron. Between them these formidable riders have won six Australian Show Jumping Championship titles, represented Australia at five OIympic Games and frequently campaign on the international circuit. They are the best of the best. The series culminates in a spectacular indoor show jumping competition in front of a live audience at Boneo Park Equestrian Centre in Victoria. The stakes are high with the five teams competing for $100,000 – the richest Australian show jumping class in recent history. Jump Off is an original concept created by Steve Dundon, Executive Producer of Showmakers Equestrian. Dundon, a TV industry veteran with over 25 years’ experience, and also a keen show jumper, saw an opportunity to raise the profile of equestrian sport in Australia. ‘There is no equestrian content on television in Australia. It’s very popular overseas and there is an opportunity to showcase the sport to a broader market. Show jumping is very easy for the public to understand – you either knock a rail or you have time faults.’ Equestrian sport is already very popular in the United States and Europe and

many Australian riders head overseas to compete at the elite level. They do this because there is decent prize money. Dundon believes ‘the only way we will attract bigger sponsorship, and therefore bigger prize money, is by producing quality equestrian content.’ The Jump Off series was created to promote equine welfare and the versatility of thoroughbreds. ‘Not every horse can win a Melbourne Cup’ says Dundon. ‘We wanted to focus on those horses that don’t win and their life after racing and show that many of these horses can have a second career in equestrian disciplines’. Showmakers Equestrian have been successful in attracting key support from the racing industry with Racing Victoria and RV’s Off the Track program signing on as Major Partners of the series. Other sponsors include Bates Saddles, Horseware, Barastoc, Coprice, Pryde’s EasiFeed, Horsepower, National Horse Transport, Willinga Park, Boneo Park and Horizon Show Jumps. In addition to Jump Off, the Showmakers Equestrian team have also recently produced three one-hour specials for Willinga Park which will be broadcast on television later this year. These are Dressage by the Sea, Tokyo Dream – an eventing special and Outback Cowboys – a campdrafting special.

Save the date! The Equestrian SA State Show Jumping Championships will be held on 5th, 6th & 7th April 2019. Put the date into your calendar now!

to Werribee to compete at thee Marcus Oldham Australian Interschool Championships from October 2-5. We had nearly 50 riders qualify this year, however due to varied reasons such as injuries we will be taking a team of 40 riders. This year we have the biggest team that South Australia has ever had travelling to the Nationals, which is very exciting! Our team Captain this year is Sophie Miller and our Vice-Captain is Claire Nitschke. Both girls are working hard to help Team SA win the Team Spirit award back this year! However, this year we are also working towards giving the other states a run for the overall trophy. Due to having so many riders on the team this year, we have three Team SA Coaches, Megan Jones, Clive Reed and Tamsin Adcock. Our team manager is Lyndal Clarke and Chef d’Equipe is Mary Nitschke.

Belle Ker Trip of a Lifetime 2018 Performa Ride ENSW Southern Stars ‘Grand Champion Owner Rider.’ The class that won me a once in a life time trip. Opportunities like this don’t come around often, therefore, I would like to thank each and everyone who helped make this opportunity occur. Firstly, ENSW, it’s not often that a trip to England and learning knowledge off some of the most knowledgeable people in our sport is offered from winning a class. Thank you to everyone from the ENSW for organising and supporting the trip. Very few prizes like this are offered in showing and I am very fortunate to all the effort that was put into organising this trip and ensuring that I had the best opportunities and experience. David Ingal, thank you for organising members passes for us at the Roy al International Horse Show, our time there was simply amazing!! Such a prestigious show that is inspiring to see. Allan Dillingham (UK) thank you for giving up your home, time and ensuring I got the full ‘English showing experience.’ I’m so greatly appreciative for you and Evon for allowing me to ride your horses while staying at your yard. I will take on the knowledge you have shared with me.

Belle Ker in the UK

To Loraine and Alice Homer, thankyou both so much for providing me the opportunity to compete at ‘Mid Herts Show’ and stay at your yard. The years of knowledge amongst your whole family is desirable and I am extremely fortunate to have had insight from you all. The time spent with you all was unforgettable and I will put in place everything skill and tactic you have taught me. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon!!! To the Hood family, thank you all for giving me the opportunity to visit your yard, amongst some of the worlds most beautiful horses. It was an honour to listen to your knowledge on horses. Dad and Harvey, thank you both for coming along to enjoy the experience with me. Or though it’s not the ‘typical Holiday’ I don’t think I could ever imagine a holiday any better!! With horses!! To Vicky and Chris Lawrie, Nicola, Alyssa Giustozzi, Eloise Guistozzi and Alyssia Giustozzi thank you all so much for everything you have done for me while I was away in the UK, it means a lot. My family at home and in England always supporting me even from the other side of the world!! Last of all, Levi!! For being the best horse I could ever dream for, without you I none of this would have been possible. Once in a life time horse for sure.

Jumping SA Update Whilst we have a few more key shows to finish off the 2018 season, the Jumping SA committee continues to work hard to support all areas of our sport in this state. We have a great group of dedicated people with different skill sets, working together to manage our sport both functionally and financially, striving to improve the sport for all jumping riders in this State. In addition to our regular facebook posts we have improved our information available to our jumping riders and show organisers via the Equestrian SA website. This is now a ‘one stop shop’ for everything related to jumping in our State. This includes the annual event calendar incorporating special

award classes, up to date Leaderboards, Jumping Squad criteria, Show Organiser information and much more. Our sincere thanks to Felicity in the ESA Office for helping to make this possible. Our Jumping Squads have continued to improve with three members of our Junior Development Squad recently upgrading to the Junior Young Rider Squad. Some of our Junior Riders from last year are also now established and competitive in Young Rider classes. We held two clinics with David Cameron and one with Jamie Coman this year. The clinics were extremely well supported and we are planning more.

Australian Junior Nations Cup Team Success Congratulations to South Australian rider Conor Reed who was selected in the Australian Junior Team together with Amelia Douglass and Clay Simmonds, both from NSW to compete at the FEI CSIO J&Y Event in Beijing, China at the end of August. This is the first time Australia has sent a National Junior Nations Cup Team away and they were victorious winning the Junior Nations Cup event convincingly with zero penalties over the two rounds, beating China who finished in second place on 34 faults. In addition to the Nations Cup event, Conor Reed, riding Uriah, won the warm-up class on the first day posting a fast, clear round. On the final day of competition, Clay Simmonds, riding Ba Dun was second in the individual Grand Prix with Conor (Uriah) and Amelia Douglass (Commander Van De Helle) in 4th and 5th place respectively. All of the Australian junior riders finished in the top 10 placings on each of the three days of competition without having any faults. The Australian Team was commended by Equestrian Australia, the other Nations and event organisers for their outstanding performances throughout the FEI event.

National Young Rider Elite Squad Selection of the National Young Rider Elite Squad is based on rider results from the National Young Rider Series and any talented young riders as identified by the National Selection Panel. The squad recognises the best of Australia’s young jumping riders, who are between

the ages of 16 and 21 and competing at a top level. This Equestrian Australia National High-Performance Squad is designed to identify our future Olympic Games and World Championship athletes. We were excited to see two of our SA riders (Sarah Wigney and Conor Reed) selected on the 2018 National Young Rider Elite Squad and are keen for more of our talented SA riders to be recognised by gaining selection next year. The Young Rider Selection Series for 2019 is well underway around Australia with two of the qualifying events already held in SA, with one more to be held at the Mt Gambier Junior and Young Rider Festival. Double points will be on offer at the Australian Championships with the final placings of the Australian Young Rider titles. We commend all of our top Young Riders vying for selection on this National Squad - Troy Woollard, Liam McMaugh, Sarah Wigney, Ella Fairweather and Conor Reed – and we wish each of them success for the remaining selection events.

Adelaide Royal Show This year’s Adelaide Royal Show saw large entries from SA and interstate in most of the Jumping sections. It was great to see some of our newer young Squad members entered in the Junior section and they put in some great performances over the week of jumping. It was mainly our more seasoned Junior riders who were successful in the placings, but the others put in some consistent performances at their first Royal Show to finish just outside the placings. This would have been a great experience for all of them and they are to be congratulated.

The senior sections had very good entries with quality horses and competitors hotly contesting the classes over some quality tracks set by Dutch Course Designer, Gerrit Beker, now based in New Zealand. It was great to see some of our younger riders stepping up in the open sections to join our more experienced riders to contest these competitions. Congratulations to all of you who were successful at the show. The Young Rider Selection Series event was won by SA rider Troy Woollard. Liam McMaugh and Sarah Wigney also performed exceptionally well to finish in the placings. There were some amazing performances in World Cup Qualifying event held at the end of the week. Whilst there was an unfortunate delay in running the second round, the spectators were treated to exceptional jumping. Congratulations to the eventual winner, Clint Beresford riding Emmaville Jitterbug, with SA rider Kristy Bruhn riding Jack finishing a credible 3rd place in a tough field.

State Indoor Jumping Championships The State Indoor Jumping Championships were held at the Mallala Equestrian Centre mid-September. Whilst numbers were down slightly, the organisation, venue and competition was first class and we were treated to some great performances all round. Thanks to the Mallala Showjumping Club committee, Tim & Michelle Clark and Mrs Rae Brice for their efforts. The weekend’s program was supported by some amazing sponsors and offered a range of classes for all levels in the two rings Congratulations to the following riders who had success in the State Indoor Speed Championships and the three major State Indoor Championship titles held in memory of John Vaughan on the Sunday.

Australian Jumping Championships The Australian Jumping Championships will be held at Boneo Park in Victoria this year from 7- 11 November. This is an amazing event where the best riders in the country come together to contest the Junior, Young Rider and Senior title events or one of the prestigious ‘Series’ events on offer.

Some of our SA riders are already well underway in their planning and preparation for the Australian Titles and we wish them all success with their campaign. State Jumping Selectors will soon meet to nominate who will represent South Australia in the “Teams” events. We wish everyone success.

Eventing out and about

The last major event of the Autumn season was the Melbourne International Three Day Event at Werribee, June 7 – 11th. Billed as the final selection event for WEG, Tryon, USA 2018 - it lost some interest for SA when Megan Jones withdrew her horses, leaving only Jaimie Stichel & Image Blue Ice in the CCI 3*. Jaimie did complete in 11th place after surviving (an acrobatic recovery effort) when almost dislodged at the hollows - an important save, as they are now qualified 4* for Adelaide ! CCI 3* was won by Jade Findlay & Oaks Cordelia finishing on her dressage score of 32.2. while Amanda Ross & Koko Popping Candy won the CIC 3* just pipping Shane Rose & Virgil when they had an unusual rail and both these CIC 3* combinations have recently been announced in the Australian Squad of 8 for WEG in September. Congratulations Shane & Amanda.

Jaimie and young horse, New World Rolls Royce, had an ‘almost’ brilliant result in the CCI 1* with an excellent dressage on 30.7 to be 8th, clear with only 0.8 time faults on 31.5 to climb up to 4th and less than one rail behind the leader on 27.7. However with scores so close, show jumping proved influential as Shane Rose’s double clear won the event on 30.5, a rail to the leader dropped them to 3rd, and second place was on 31.7 - so a clear would have had Jaimie in second...... but not to be as 3 rails dropped her to 28th ! Similarly Rachelle Verma & Koyuna Dark Sun came up from midfield dressage with a double clear cross country to be 18th but only 6.8 from the lead – 2 rails and finished 22nd as highest placed SA rider. Anthony Thomas finished 32nd on Irish Craft and 41st on Allegretto, Danni Hampton 44th on Wynara Bronze Medal with a fast XC with only 1.2 time, while Emily Nettle & Cash Cab completed in 54th after a run out but a double clear SJ to finish well.

Other SA riders had less fortunate results, with Jess McEwen & Allegro Diva in 12th after dressage on 31.6 having two refusals on course and deciding to withdraw before show jumping. Both Hannah Hardy & City of the Moon and Kate Bailey & Acacia Ridge Beaudancer had accumulated refusals as also did Anthony on his first horse Southern Warlock. Not our best statistics – 7 riders, 10 horses, 6 completions and 4 did not complete. Similarly our three CCI 2* riders had disappointing results with only Sarah Clark & LV Balou Jeanz completing in 33rd place having been assessed a crossing of tracks in approaching the two narrow stumps by almost jumping the wrong 3* one before changing course and incurring 20 penalties. The stumps were to be a SA ‘bogy’ fence as both Stephen & Va Va Voom and Steph & True Celebre had glance offs here and then trouble at the difficult Rose Garden combination where Steph retired and Stephen collected his 3rd refusal, neither combinations completing the 2* course. Let us hope lessons are learned and more SA riders qualify for Adelaide in the Spring season to come.

Working backwards, Canoe Tree Horse Trials, June 1st & 2nd, ran their EvA 65 and 80 ODE’s on the weekend before MI3DE offering a combined competition of dressage and show jumping rounds at CNC1*/ 2* especially for riders going to Melbourne 3de as well as for 105 & 95. This was well received by riders taking the opportunity to compete on an excellent grassy surface at Pt Elliott show grounds. EvA 80 was won by Elizabeth Hayman & Manhattan BHI on a flash dressage score of 22.2, from Kaitlin Teichert & Coolidowns Wrangler with Grace Neuhaus & Tuxedo Cat third. EvA 65 was won by Chelsea Clarke and the everlasting pony, Mighty Murphy on 30.6 from Eloise Entraigues and newly purchased Koyuna Dreamcatcher on 30.8 (but for those 0.4 time faults !) while Laura Salisbury & Grand Ali placed third. The weekend after Melbourne 3DE the Francis Figwer Pony Club event combined with the Monarto Horse Trials on June 16 & 17th, offering EA classes at CNC 1* won by Danni Hampton & Kalinga Nora from Jo Davis & Sleepy Jackson.

EvA 105 was won by interstate visitor, Lucy Long & Another Option from Danni Hampton & Viscount Visage with Connie Miller & Don Roccardo in 3rd. EvA 95 was won by Charlie Germein on Karin Edwards’ Schavello finishing on their dressage score of 32, from Rachelle Verma & Gizella and Jeanine Joubert & Mr Wilson in 3rd. EvA 80 was won by Ashleigh Westcot & Danson Donnerkiss on the amazing dressage score of 22 (a 78 % !) from Eloise Entraigues & Orange is the New Black with Tanya Johnson & Veneficus in 3rd. EvA 65 again won by Mighty Murphy & Chelsea Clarke from Tania Edmonds & Chelleason Crown Dior with Shaye Clark & Star Attraction in 3rd. EvA 50 was won by Steph Cooper & Allen Park Arzona from Tamzine Omerod & Ralph’s Legend with Georgina Symons & Im Kinda Tuff in 3rd. Mildura Horse Trials, Victoria 28th & 29th July. As the first event after the winter break, Mildura in the sunny Riverland, is always a

drawcard for SA riders as well as Victorians. With a encouraging course built up to EvA 105 by Melbourne Course Designer, Ewan Kellett, it is an inviting long weekend away with extra activities on Friday. EvA 105 was won by, first time at 105 combination, Kristy Dodd & KL Colombus from Danni Hampton & Kalinga Nora while Ashleigh Westcott & Renown Mr Truman were 3rd, all within one point of each other in a tight finish. EvA 95 was won by Victorian, Robyn Brown & I’m Bobby Too from Mildura’s Phillipa Durban & Doubtless with young Courtney Munro & Aylestone Park Apple Blossom back on form for 3rd. EvA 80 A and EvA 80 B were both won by Kerrie Bowman, - all the way up from Millicent with renewed enthusiasm and introducing a competitive little daughter into the sport – well done Kerrie on both counts ! Kerrie & Fourwinds Union Jack won A on a very smart 26 from Rachael Freely & Impian Just Coop with Robyn Brown & Havada in 3rd. Kerrie & Fourwinds Douglas took out B from Grace Neuhaus & Tuxedo Cat with Emma Paech & Silent Winchester in 3rd.

The riders that attended Mount Gambier HT fought through gale force winds, heavy hail and rough rain but some still managed great weekends. Asha Warnock took out the win in the CNC** riding Lane End Bond, leading from start to finish. Together they produced a 65.21% dressage score, clear XC (just incurring a few time penalties) and a double clear SJ round! They were closely followed by 2nd place getter, Rachelle Verma & Koyuna Dark Sun… Great effort as this was ‘Darky’s’ first ever 2*!! The weather was certainly not favoring the CNC* riders! Inconsistent rain and hail made for some less than ideal XC rounds, but Jessica Tainsh & Punching In A Dream managed double clears in both their SJ & XC rounds! This (combined with their 65.12% dressage score) meant they were the winners of the CNC1*!! 2nd place was taken out by Christina Grear & her OTT Roger That. EvA105 was a huge class! Out of 31 starters, 26 finished with 4 riders having refusals and 5 incurring Elimination. Craig Andrews and his super-mare Belstone Lucille won this class with a foot perfect dressage test, scoring 75%!! This was backed up by double clears in both SJ and XC. Lucy Long and Another Option followed with 2nd place. The last XC riders of the day were those competing in the EvA95. A dressage score of 72.40% and double clears in both jumping disciplines meant Madeline O’Callaghan & Equineaffair Mystique won 1st place. 2nd place went out to Juliet Hittman & Dobby who also had double clears in jumping but a slightly lower dressage score.

Kendra Petney & Belcam Carra took out the win in the EvA80 class, a Brilliant dressage score of 74.60% paired with double clears in both SJ and XC meant Kendra held her position throughout the event! Kaitlin Teichert & Coolidowns Wrangler closely followed her and took out 2nd place. Rachelle Verma coaches both these young riders, which she felt was a personal win for her as a coach! Well done all!! The EvA65 was won by Brooke White & Turnback Time. They scored a huge 77.92%

Dressage score and only incurring 0.8 time out on XC to add to their positive dressage, meant they kept their 1st place! Sharyn Jong and Gday Nate took out 2nd place with a slightly lower dressage score but double clears in both jumping disciplines. Mount Gambier yet again proved to be a successful event despite the city’s typical weather fluctuations. A few updated XC fences freshened the course and gave the riders some new challenges. It was overall a steadily run weekend!
