event on the 12th and 13th January at Strathalbyn. This year we trailed a new concept, running a joint Master Class for both Dressage and Show Horse. This evening event on the Friday proved very popular with over 120 spectators enjoying listening to our special guests Maree Tomkinson and Dirk Dijkstra. Maree is one of Australia’s leading Dressage riders commencing her career in Show Horse and later moving into dressage where she represented Australia at the 2014 World Equestrian Games. Dirk is an accomplished Grand Prix rider and competitor. Prior to moving to Australia from the Netherlands Dirk competed primarily in Show Jumping events and has competed at the highest level in all Olympic disciplines.
Joe Hooper, Board Chair, Equestrian South Australia
Dear Members, Another busy beginning to the year with lots of events being planned and some new developments we hope you will enjoy. In January we kicked off with the inaugural Gillian Rolton Youth Development Scholarship Programme named in honour of our late SA Equestrian legend. It was great to see so many of our youngest and best riders in the State attend this
We are very thankful to our presenters, discipline committees, coaches and to all members and parents who supported the two days. We will be working hard to bring this important development opportunity to our young riders again next year. Show Horse held the first of the Classic Series at the historical Oakbank Racing Club and our Interschool Gymkhana day was held immediately after the ESA awards night, again both were a big success and particular thanks must go to Lyndal and Felicity from the ESA Office for all their hard work to make sure all entries and spectators had a wonderful time at both events.
We also facilitated a Show Horse Judges Accreditation at the ESA Office in early March presented by Show Horse National Chair Wendy Hunt and State Riders Representative Chris Lawrie with good attendance. There was also an EA Official Forum & Course held at the Oakbank Racecourse in late February, for new and re-accrediting Officials, Stewards and Medication Control Officers with keen interest from new and existing SA Members participating. The first event for the Eventing season commenced in March at Kirkcaldy Park on the 17th – 18th March. This had great entry numbers and was followed by the Reynella Horse Trials 24 – 25th March, again a terrific event which was well supported by members. ESA is about to hit the silly season and no, it’s not Christmas or Mad March…. it is April and in the world of Equestrian SA it is one of the busiest times of the equestrian calendar. This includes: • State Show Jumping Championship 6-8th April • Show Horse Autumn Classic 8th April • Riders of the Future 14th – 15th April • State Dressage Championships 28th – 29th April Good luck to all competitors in these events and others. We are pleased to acknowledge two ESA members who received Australia Day Awards this year, a posthumous award of Member of the Order of Australia (AM) to the late Gill Rolton and the Order of Australia (OAM) to Michael Scott for his dedication to the community, particular in the area of emergency services.
Both were also acknowledged at our ESA Awards Night held on February 2nd 2018 at the Stamford Plaza. This special night was very well attended and on behalf of the Board and membership I congratulate all those who received awards on the night. In particular, I want to acknowledge the winners of the youth development disciplines for their achievement. These were; Kaitlin Petney - Dressage, Conor Reed - Jumping, Skye Barrowcliffe - Vaulting and Isabelle Ker – Show Horse. Well done and thank you to our special guest Greg Rolton for presenting the Gillian Rolton Youth Development Program Awards. Not only is the night a great opportunity to see our youngest and best talented riders, it is also a chance to mingle with those outside your own discipline interests. Intra-discipline communications is so critical and develops not only a support network for our younger riders, but also nurtures a culture an appreciation of cross discipline engagement and appreciation and hopefully future mentorship as our young riders progress in the equestrian journey across various disciplines. We wish all winners on the evening and all development squad members the best of success in your journey. On the international stage it is pleasing to see South Australia represented on the Long List for the 2018 World Equestrian Games to be held in Tyron in September. These are: Stella Harbison (Endurance);Rebecca Vandepeear (Vaulting); Jamie Hocking (Vaulting) and Scott Keach (Jumping). All are ESA members and we congratulate them on their achievement and wish them all the best for their preparation. Its great to see South Australia represented at this level.

Another South Australian who is continuing to achieve at the international level is Megan Jones (Eventing ) who has been named on the National Green Squad. The ‘Green Squad’ is for athletes that have achieved current results in the last six months (i.e. CCI3*, CSI4*, CDI4* and above) demonstrating a capability of medal performances at the upcoming World Equestrian Games and/or Olympic Games’. We certainly wish Megan all the best in her endeavours. Last week we held our High performance ‘off horse’ education session at the Arkaba Hotel. Topics covered sports psychology, injury prevention and management; use of social media and an overview of the High Performance reporting requirements. We thank all guest speakers for their time and contribution which was well received by over 30 squad members from all disciplines who attended. We apologise for the late notice for some which we understand affected attendance. We will be working with the squad members and discipline committees for input into the content of the next education session to be held in April and all invitees will receive ample notice next time! Whilst the membership is keeping busy we at the Board have also been very active continuing to make the necessary changes to best direct our limited resources to serving you the membership as best we can. Having finalized the move to a new accounting system we have commenced providing the Discipline Committees with improved information on their budgets to help committees balance their organizing of events. There is still some fine-tuning but overall it is much improved.
Other work being undertaken is our ongoing review of our internal procedures; delegations; communication processes; policies around complaints management and our membership engagement. We are also exploring some exciting development opportunities for the equestrian community that we hope to be able to tell you about soon. I appreciate such background work is not front of mind for our members, nor should it be. But it goes to the heart of trying to make sure we have as efficient and connected an association as possible. My thanks to all Board members for their hard work, our Executive officer Sharon and the office staff for their tireless support and commitment to make the changes necessary to make ESA a success in the future. Finally, thank you to all of you, our members who participate as Chairs, committee members, officials and volunteers…or competitors who turn up at our events and give your all in competition. Have a great Autumn season and stay safe. Joe Hooper - Board Chair Equestrian SA

VALE - Russ Ritter Equestrian South Australian is deeply saddened to advise our members of the passing of Mr Russell Ritter on the 4th February 2018. Russ’s love of horses began at a young age, he commenced riding at the age of four and had a desire to become a jockey when he was older, unfortunately he grew too tall for racing but became involved in showing and show jumping and then helped his daughters develop their love of jumping. In early 1975 Russ was driven to act when two girls died riding their horses on public roads. Russ convinced the airport to lease some of its land in the south west corner, the venue became the home of the Metropolitan Show Jumping Club later renamed the SA Equestrian Centre. For many years Russ worked tirelessly in assisting the club run monthly freshman days, local jumping events and rounds of the World Cup. Russ was all things to the club from mowing grass, painting to serving in the canteen. In 2016 Russell Ritter received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to equestrian sports. Russ had been involved in the sport for over 60 years. A long serving volunteer of the show jumping community Russell served on numerous committees including the board of Equestrian South Australia.

He was an inaugural member of the Equestrian Australia SA Branch Show Jumping Council and also founder of the SA Metro Show Jumping Club. In 2000 he was the recipient of the Australian Sports Medal and in 2012 he was also awarded the Sport SA Volunteer of the Year award.
Helmet Regulations Updated The helmet approved standards list has been updated in the Equestrian Australia (EA) General Regulations as from 19 October 2016. Current American standard SNELL E2001 and British standard PAS 015 have been added to the list of approved safety standards to offer a wider range of choice for our members. The new Australian ARB HS 2012 standard has been added to the ongoing and current AS/NZS 3838 Australian standard. This standard has been published by Racing Australia in 2012. EA’s responsibilities include maximising safety in our sport. That is why from now on, except where Sport Rules allows otherwise, riders and drivers competing in an EA competition, must wear an approved helmet with the chin strap fastened at all times. The same is recommended when riding a horse at any time. Judy Fasher, Chair of EA says “Equestrian Australia is pleased to have aligned our rules with international standards for riding helmets. The new rules offer variety, combined with the most advanced technology available in the production and design of riding helmets.”
Following the withdrawal of the safety standard EN1384 in Europe during 20142015 EA had followed the movement in February 2016 by informing members that the EN1384 standard would not be permitted as of 1 January 2017 and that in addition, the new VG1 was a new approved standard on the list. The year notice gave riders time to purchase new helmets if necessary. See the February 2016 statement here. As per the EA General Regulations, Article 122.2: Dress and Salute, the following will apply: Except where Sport Rules allows otherwise, riders and drivers competing in an EA competition, must wear an approved helmet with the chin strap fastened at all times. The same is recommended when riding a horse at any time. Protective headgear must conform with one of the current approved safety standards: • Current Australian standard AS/NZS 3838 (2006 onwards) provided they are SAI Global marked. • New Australian standard ARB HS 2012 provided they are SAI Global marked. • Current American standard ASTM F1163 (2004a or 04a onwards) provided they are SEI marked. • Current American standard SNELL E2001. • Current British standard PAS 015 (1998 or 2011) provided they are BSI Kitemarked. • Interim European Standard VG1 (01.040: 2014-12) with or without BSI Kitemark.tgoing European
SUMMER 2017 | From the Horses Mouth | 9
BSI Kitemarked: The BSI Kitemarked logo can look different depending on the year of manufacturing of your helmet. This is only given as an example.
Note 09/01/2017: We are receiving many inquiries about Helmet Regulations and would like to reassure members. Your helmet can conform with one or several standards AT THE SAME TIME. If your helmet is approved EN1384 (the old standard no longer approved by EA) BUT ALSO approved under another standard (PAS015, ASTM F1163, VG1, etc.) then it is “good to go” ! I am 16 years of age and have been involved with horses all my life. My parents operate an equestrian centre with my dad Clive Reed a full-time jumping coach and trainer. My major sponsor is Horseland Adelaide. Currently I have a team four competition horses. Last year I was fortunate to win Leading Junior Jumping Rider after both my horses had amazing performances in the Foster’s Cup series finishing first and second respectively. Clasique Dorien, owned by my parents and aunty was also awarded Junior Jumping Horse of the Year. I am a member of the SA Junior/Young Rider State Squad and am proud to represent SA in team events. Through the Squad I have participated in clinics and high-performance activities to assist my development as an elite rider. I am dedicated to my training program and passionate about horses and the sport of Jumping.
• Gaining a Certificate of Capability (COC) qualifying for 2018 Youth Olympic Games selection. • Finishing 6th overall in the Australian Junior Jumping Championships. • Winning my first start in the Australian National Young Rider Selection Series event. • Winning the 2017 Gillian Rolton Youth Development Scholarship • Winning the 2017 SA Leading Junior Jumping Rider of the Year I started the 2018 season with two wins and a second in the first three Junior Championships classes on Nightwish with other placings on a relatively young horse BoLuke. Clasique Dorien won the first Young Rider class of the 2018 Series held at Angaston Show and we also both stepped up to win the Platinum League class against some of SA’s best senior riders. My aim is to one day represent Australia in Jumping at the highest level such as the Olympic Games.
Isabelle Ker Growing up I have always been around horses, it wasn’t until I was eight when I started riding and found my real love and passion for horses. I’m currently studding at Seymour college in year 12. Once completing my final year, I hope to work with horses, showing them, breading and teaching younger children. My first show was maccasfiled ag show, where I fell off and never made it into the ring. However, this didn’t stop me, we were back at a show not long after.
I have been lucky enough to have a great support group and I believe this is a significant factor for the last few successful seasons. Being under the guidance of Vicky and Chris Lawrie is not only a dream of mine but has helped me achieve some of the highest goals I never thought I would be able to achieve. Such as, qualifying in seven classes for the nationals over three years, two royal show championships, a Horse Deals Rider Profile, Sponsorship with county saddles and now the Gillian Rolton youth development scholarship. I highly look forward to the upcoming seasons with my 4-year-old Boy Soprano Galloway (Levi.) with Levi only being four we are teaching each other as we go. I am looking forward to the opportunity to attended the AIS, to further my knowledge.

Kaitlin Petney
Kailin Petney I have had an interest in horses and riding since I can remember. My mother was a huge influence, having had horses her whole life. At the age of 4 she bought me my first pony and it all progressed from there. I have been lucky enough to have gained a diverse knowledge of many disciplines, from Western Events, Dressage, Eventing, Pony Club and working at Thoroughbred Studs handling foals & yearlings and as a working pupil at various Competition Stables. Over the last 8 years we have travelled throughout the State, as well as a few interstate events to compete predominantly in the sport of Eventing and also local Dressage competitions. Originally it was myself and my middle sister competing in most of the Pony Club
One Day Events. Next came my younger sister who joined in as well which was pretty difficult with only a double horse float! Eventually my middle sister found other interests, leaving Kendra and myself, making it a bit more manageable. Even though the early years were spent mostly training horses and Eventing, I guess I knew even then that Dressage was what I was most passionate about and where I would end up. I have been privileged to ride and spend time at some of Australia’s leading Dressage Stables including: Danson Dressage, KEA Training Stables (NSW) and Chapplehurst Dressage (NSW) which has given me valuable knowledge and experience. Currently I am a Committee member for the Mount Crawford Dressage Club – learning new skills, and contributing to the Equestrian Community.
My future ambition is to increase my knowledge and improve my riding to progress through the Dressage levels. At present, I enjoy training and competing my two horses: Jazz Fusion R and Nadahka. I intend to ride at the next Australian Youth Championships and other Interstate competitions this year. However, my ultimate long-term goal is to train and ride at Grand Prix level!
Skye Barrowcliffe My name is Skye and I am an equestrian vaulter. I’m 20 years old and have been vaulting for the past 16 years. I am very passionate about vaulting and love the artistry that is incorporated with a love of horses. Vaulting is a bit unique and quite a small sport in Australia. The easiest way I describe it is as a mixture of gymnastics and dance performed on horseback. I mostly compete individually, however, I have competed in teams and am currently competing in a Pas de Deux as well. The level I compete in is Advanced where everything is performed at canter. Not only do I compete but I have also trained a lot of vaulting horses as it is very rare to buy a horse that has already been exposed to such an unusual sport. I am currently training up a new horse in the hopes he will replace my current competition horse when he is ready to retire. In the future I would like to go overseas to train and compete, whilst I only compete at a 2* level now I would like to qualify for 3* in the future. Since I have been involved in vaulting from such a young age I am very interested in the sport’s future and know most of the people who vault in South Australia. I am on the Vaulting South Australia committee to help the sport grow and to give a competitor’s perspective. I would also like to get my
coaching qualifications so I can continue to help others progress in the sport. I am honoured to have received the Gillian Rolton Youth Development Scholarship and am looking forward to what I will learn at the Australian Institute of Sport.
Steph Hann I started Eventing in 2012 on Di and Wendy Schaeffer’s old schoolmaster Aussie and completed 3 Introductory events with him before beginning my journey on my Off the Track Thoroughbred True Celebre at EvA65 in the end of 2014. It was a tough journey over coming the many trials of an Off The Track Thoroughbred and inexperienced young rider, but we had our first eventing success in 2016 in the EvA105 at Hills and Barossa. 2017 saw our first 1* start at Hills and Barossa Horse Trials which we won and going on to win our next 2 starts at Lockington CNC1* and Reynella CIC1*. Our aim for the year was to compete at our first International 3 day event at Melbourne CCI1* where we finished the best placed South Australian. We also fit in our dressage schedule around our busy eventing one and are on the Youth High Performance Dressage Squad for 2018 as well at the 2018 Eventing State Squad. My plans for the future in eventing is to get True Celebre to Adelaide CCI2* in 2018, which a plan for also complete Melbourne International CCI2*. I am also planning to bring my young horse up through the levels over the next couple of years.

Eventing out and about
Firstly Congratulations to the Award Winners for 2017. Steph Hann took out the Gillian Rolton Youth Development Scholarship (for a second year) and also the Tasha Khouzam Memorial Award for best Young Rider competition performances over 2017. Megan Jones took out the Anna Savage Memorial Award for best performed Senior Rider and her top horse, Kirby Park Impress, won the best Senior Horse by a substantial margin with a top performance to be second at Adelaide 4*. Megan & Impress have recently been announced on the National Green Squad in the lead up to WEG at Tryon, USA, in September. Good Luck Megan, we hope to see you on the Green & Gold Eventing Team.
Megan & KP Invader, 5th CCI 3* Wallaby Hill. Photo courtesy Hilary Hann.
Reverting back to December 2017, five SA riders made the long trip to Wallaby Hill for the final Three Day Event of the year at Alex Townsend’s stunning property in the Southern Highlands of NSW, near Robertson. An absolutely beautiful course, designed by Mike Etherington Smith, with an apparently unlimited budget judging by the beautiful dry stone walls setting off banks & steps, landscaped ditches & creeks, two water jumps and super drainage throughout. So beautifully inviting to jump that only 4 riders out of 44 starters in the CCI 1* had any cross country faults – a factor not appreciated by our SA contingent of Wendy Schaeffer & Canterbury Sun Rose, Rachelle Verma & Koyuna Dark Sun and Steph Hann & True Celebre, all 3 with less impressive dressage scores than usual, but double clears XC, still not quite up into the placings. However all 3 riders did achieve qualifying results making the long trip worthwhile. The CCI 3* class, in contrast to CCI 1*, had significant XC faults with no less than 11 Frangible Device penalties and numerous run outs elsewhere. Won by Emma Bishop & CP Issey Miyake from Amanda Ross & Koko Popping Candy and Yona Lloyd & Seargent Crisp, while SA’s Megan Jones & Kirby Park Invader placed 7th at his first CCI 3*. James Deacon also competed in an ODE class, not to be outdone by Megan.

February 16 & 17th saw an excellent clinic with eventing legend, Lucinda Green, held at Reynella grounds – which is well worth attending, even as a spectator. Several State Squad riders took advantage of her visit to SA.
February 24 & 25 Geelong HT. Eventing in Victoria at Geelong attracted 11 SA riders and 17 horses keen to get an early season start on a pleasant undulating cross country course - encouraging, but mildly challenging, built by Ewen Kellett with its dressage & warm up all in green lucerne fields. Rachelle Verma & Canterbury Sun Rose finished 3rd in CNC 1* with Koyuna Dark Sun in 10th. Danni Hampton & Wynara Bronze Medal came 4th in EVA105A just ahead of Chrissy Grear & Roger That in 5th, with Charlie Germein & Garman GZ and Tarnya Brennan & Ella also completing. EVA105B Danni Hampton & Kalinga Nora was 7th with Enya Crockford & The Griffon and Isabeau Garner & Fiction also completing. EVA95 saw Enya Crockford & Bamboo Textiles Roulette come 9th with Isabeau Garner & Second Glance and Kristy Dodd & KL Columbus completing. EVA80 had variable results with Sophie Gerstlauer & Hugoifigo best placed SA rider.

2018 Eventing Season in SA has a late start with Kirkcaldy scheduled for March 17 & 18, the same dates as Wandin runs a CIC in Victoria and a week later than the CIC at Tonimbuk, both of which may attract many SA riders seeking CIC qualifications interstate.
March 10 & 11th – Tonimbuk, Victoria CIC.
State Squad riders have a clinic with Prue Barrett on March 5 & 6th coming up and an interesting clinic & dressage critique scheduled for March 12 & 13th with Christian Landolt, from Switzerland, the Head of Grand Jury at Aus3DE last November. Later in April and again at end of May there are show jumping clinics with Jamie Coman. All aimed to maximise Squad training in the lead up to Melbourne 3DE in June.
CIC 3* was won by Megan Jones and her recently Nationally listed horse, Kirby Park Impress, with a dressage of 70%, clear SJ & XC with some time faults and a finish score of 51.1 ahead of Robert Palm on 54-2. Great start “on the road to WEG” for Megan!
A brief report of this weekend’s main results for SA riders at Tonimbuk, Victoria, the first CIC events of the season.
CIC 2* and a qualifying score gained by Young Rider, Steph Hann & True Celebre, in their first 2* finishing a respectable 9th. CIC 1* Megan Jones having her first start on newly acquired New Zealand 1* horse, Impeccable, placed 8th on a score of 40.1. EVA105 B – Lara Pizimolas & WHF Labyrinth impressed in dressage to lie second on 25.8, clear jumping but a few time faults dropped him to 7th. While James Deacon & Del Sequoia finished 14th. EVA95 B Abby Dibb & Northern Lights led the dressage on 26.4, but a 20 penalty XC ruined her day to finish 24th and Lara Pizimolas retired JEP Frapant on XC. Liv Beissel & Kirby Park Irish Mink placed 7th in EVA80 C.
Rule Changes for 2018 Eventing Rule changed to make use of approved FEI frangible devices mandatory from Feb 1st 2018, on those fences 1*/2*/3* in Australia where the materials fit the specifications for use of a frangible device. This initiative was implemented with the support from “EA Making Eventing Safer Fund” (supported by Terry Snow) and the “Olivia Inglis Foundation”. Riders still need to realise that frangible devices can’t make up for bad riding decisions and the onus is still on the rider to ride each fence with respect and to the best of their ability at a level they are confident is within their capability. Riders need to be reminded that after 3 stops/ refusals at one fence, or 4 refusals throughout the course, they are Eliminated and must not continue on course. This ruling now applies to all levels, not only official EVA95 and above, but also even EVA80 & below now. Dressage scoring has also been altered for 2018 with the co-efficient being taken out to make scoring more understandable. Now a percentage awarded for a test of say 70% good marks converts directly to a penalty score of 30 (ie the marks below 100% that are missing, eg 65% = 35; 60% = 40 etc).
Qualifications to compete at a higher level for “Uncategorised” riders generally require 3 MER’s at the previous level to advance to a higher level, eg 3 x MER’s at EVA105 to progress to CNC 1*. For these riders to qualify to compete at Melbourne 3DE, CCI 1* in June (or Camperdown CCI 1* in April) they would then require 3 x CNC 1* or CIC 1* as a combination. Riders need to check up on FEI/EA Rules on qualifications – Chapter 5 ; Technical Requirements for Participation, Articles 517; 518 ; 519 ; 520. Particular attention to the tables in 520.3 and 520.4. If unsure of your qualifications ask an official (TD or Coach or ESA Committee member) for help with interpretation.

Trinity College Interchool Gymkhana
Interschool Competitions Interschool in South Australia is slowly gaining momentum, with over 70 riders registered this year, with many in more than one discipline. More events were included in the calendar for Interschool in 2018, starting in January at the Mount Gambier Junior Show Jumping Championships and concluding at the Mt Crawford Autumn Dressage Festival on May 26/27th. Mitavite are now in their third year of sponsorship for Interschool. The sponsorship from Mitavite helps make the coaching and running of Interschool events possible. The two big events on the Interschool calendar are the Gymkhana run in conjunction with the Eastern Fleurieu School in February, and the Riders of the Future Championships incorporating Interschool State Championships in April.
Also in its third year, the Mitavite ESA and Eastern Fleurieu Gymkhana was a great success with almost 100 riders competing on the day. Thanks to the support of the Eastern Fleurieu School, riders are able to compete as day members and participate in Interschool classes for the first time at the Gymkhana. The Gymkhana held on February 3rd had seven arenas running for dressage, show jumping, combined training and show horse. Classes are for all levels of rider from encourage hacking through to Elementary Dressage and 120cm Show Jumping. Aggregate trophies won on the day were awarded at the rider’s school to raise awareness of Interschool and give the riders more recognition in front of their peers.

Show Horse
Show Horse has had a busy calendar to date with the introduction of new shows. All events are open to every EA member throughout Australia with the exception of the state HOTY. The first of the Classic events was conducted in January at the historical Oakbank Racing Club, the venue surpassed our expectations. We wish to thank the Oakbank Racing Club for the use of such a beautiful venue, we were privileged to be able to showcase this venue to our participants and spectators.
Our next show is the Autumn Classic on the 8th April at the University of Adelaide Roseworthy Campus, which will be an additional qualifying event for the 2019 Southern Cross Horse Spectacular, as well as a qualifying event for the ESA High Points awards. The Judge for the event is Mr Mark Kenzig. Entries are now open online. The Show Horse Working Party are well into planning for the 2018 Horse of the Year which will again this year, be held at the Wayville Showgrounds on the 12th – 13th and 14th October 2018. A further edition to this year’s show calendar will be a Winter Classic, date and venue are yet to be confirmed, we will advise as soon as all details are confirmed. This month sees an exciting new event, ‘Southern Cross Show Horse Spectacular’ being conducted on the 16th/17th/18th March 2018 at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. The first major event to hold a National New Comer final for all newcomers throughout Australia and New Zealand, who have been lucky enough to qualify. We were fortunate in being able to hold 2 qualifying events in SA for this event, giving more members an opportunity to qualify. We wish all South Australians attending the very best of luck.

Over the winter months the ESA office will be making alterations to the current ESA Show Horse web page. This will benefit all
Show Horse members. Once the website is updated it will provide more up-to-date information including programs, show information, results, rules, measuring information, this will all be available on the dedicated Show Horse tabs. We wish to thank all members for their ongoing support and we encourage you to offer feedback and ideas to the Show Horse Working Party. Through this feedback and sharing of ideas, we are able to continue to develop and improve Show Horse within South Australia. We wish you all a safe and successful show season.

EA Coach of the Month Ruth Schneeberger Coach of the month is a regular Education series. It is a way of highlighting the EA coaches and educators who work with dedication and passion all over Australia. Ruth Schneeberger is an is an EA level 2 General and Dressage Coach based in Mount Torrens, South Australia. She was
born and grew up in Switzerland where she achieved the highest level in her coaching qualifications before moving to Australia, becoming an Instructor, that is the highest International Expert level, as defined by the International Group for Equestrian Qualifications (IGEQ).
Already at an early age, Ruth was very interested in horses. “Nobody else in my family was “horsey” and in Switzerland it is not common at all, to grow up with a pony in the backyard!” So it wasn’t until she turned 14, that she started riding. “I found a farm about a half an hour bicycle ride from home, that had horses. Soon I spent every free afternoon and weekends there, helping with all sorts of chores and as payment being allowed to ride! There was no arena, all the riding was out in the forest and surrounding fields.” shares Ruth. When the dedicated rider turned 18, she started a three-year apprenticeship as a Bereiter mit fahigkeitsausweis (Equivalent of an EA Level 2 General Coach) at a riding school with a qualified Instructor. For the first time, she enjoyed proper riding lessons in Dressage and Jumping. During those three years, she also started teaching people at the riding school. She passed the exams at the end of the apprenticeship and after a further two years working there, she passed her next exam to become a Bereiter mit Berufsprufung (Equivalent to an EA Level 3 General Coach). When she turned 25, she took and passed the exams to become a Dipliméirter Reitlehrer or Instructor (no equivalent in Australia). During all those years she competed in Dressage (up to medium level), Showjumping and Eventing (up to 2-star level), mainly on school horses, or some horses owned by other people. Ruth stayed at the same riding school for another 3 years, teaching full-time and riding. Then she decided to take 6 months off to travel part of the world! On her travels, she came to New Zealand and Australia and got the opportunity to work
in South Australia. “I applied for a working permit and was successful on the basis that my coaching level equalled level 3 here. I was given the level 2 General and Dressage. After 4 years I applied for permanent residency and became an Australian citizen in 2001!” she says. The first 7 years in Australia, Ruth worked for Sylvia McLachlan in Mount Pleasant. She gave me her the opportunity to train and compete several horses, and also as part of her earnings gave Ruth her first horse called Superstar. He was a 4-year-old thoroughbred/stock horse cross, and with him, Ruth learned over the years all the movement up to Grand Prix! Her partner Hennie is a draftsman by trade, and they have they own property, 20 acres, in Mount Torrens. Hennie doesn’t ride but is a little bit involved, helps Ruth where possible and does all the work on the property. When they bought the property, there was only a house and a garage on it. “Hennie has done all the fencing, plumbing, designed and built the stables, shelters etc. and maintains and keeps improving things all the time!” says Ruth proudly. About 16 years ago Ruth started regular lessons with Dianne Jenkyn, who found for Ruth her next horse: Hervey Bay, at the time a 5-year-old warmblood. With Dianne’s help, they got to Grand Prix and competed at that level in SA and also in Werribee and Sydney. Over the last 20 years, Ruth was lucky to work with a lot of different horses! She trained and competed horses up to Prix St. Georges/Intermediate 1, the last one being Ponderosa Stud Royal Dancer. Ruth still train and organise clinics with Dianne Jenkyn about six times a year!

At the moment Ruth has 4 competition horses: Roxleigh Fidelio, a 6-year-old gelding, training at medium level; Miramar Serene, a 6-year-old mare, which she only bought 4 months ago, training novice/ elementary; Cooramin Rialto Hit, a 7-yearold gelding, training at medium/advanced level, owned by Cheryl Hatswell from the Ponderosa Stud and Evie, a 6-year-old mare, training novice/elementary, owned by Jo McEvoy. “Roxleigh Fidelio has been the star these last few months, being reserve novice champion and fourth in the elementary championship at the 2017 Australian Dressage Championships, and also reserve novice and reserve elementary champion at the Dressage Festival in Werribee. He was SA elementary state champion 2017, and ended up EA Dressage Horse of the Year 2017 in South Australia. Exciting times ahead with those four horses, especially as they start moving up the levels!” explains Ruth. Along with all the riding and training, Ruth enjoys teaching as well! “It is very rewarding to see riders improving themselves and their horses. I always try to improve a
horse’s self-carriage, try to teach the rider, how to achieve and maintain it! Another really important thing for me is accuracy! Accuracy in riding a dressage test as much as accuracy in riding movements in training! Riding accurate movements will help improve self-carriage and if a horse is in self-carriage, it is much easier to ride correct movements!” Ruth teaches quite a wide range of riders and horses at different levels. “I think it is important to take the correct steps in teaching a horse or rider, there is no point in taking shortcuts! Sometimes someone wants to start flying changes, but the canter isn’t a good enough quality! Or there are the opposite ones that still haven’t started a basic leg yield with a horse already a few years under saddle. I try to adapt to each rider and horse duo capabilities!” A little over two years ago Ruth joined the South Australian Dressage Committee, as the Riders Representative and award coordinator. “Doing this, I feel I can give something back to the sport, which is my profession, my hobby and my passion!” she says.

Angas Harness Driving Club (EA affiliated club) held a Driven Dressage and Cones Competition 18th February at Auldearn Echunga .The Dressage test was one of the new FEI Driven Dressage Tests for Young Horses. It is a test that incorporates the three trots – working, collected and extended and of course halt, rein back and walk. After completing the dressage test drivers went on to the Cones Course. This incorporated the Angas Bridge which has not been used by the club for some time due to the size and time involved setting it up. It has a reputation of horses being reluctant to cross over it mainly due to the noise. However every combination had no difficulty negotiating the “dreaded bridge”. The Cones Course was designed by Jackie Boyd and flowed well. Competitors included Jackie Boyd who had the highest dressage score (horse) with her Hackney Horse Ashwood Quest for Fame and Anna
Vaudin who had the highest pony score with her son Rhys’s pony Nugget. New competitor Belinda Mattner, groom on many occasions did her first dressage test .Kim Norris had a Horse Pair in their first competition as a pair and had the best dressage score of the day. These two horses have a great future ahead of them in Combined Driving. Thanks go to Scott Evans who set the bridge up as well as competing with his horse . The Committee thanks judges Prue Copping and Margaret Fricker. Three ESA Carriage Driving members attended a clinic with Phil Marshall from Victoria 17th February and all felt they benefitted from his expertise. These included Anne Lindh, Kim Norris and Junior Driver Morgan Lindh who fitted in his lesson with show jumping at Mt Pleasant the same weekend.

New VaultingSA Committee elected With a new VaultingSA Committee elected after the AGM in place, the committee held a forum with participating clubs in SA to develop a calendar of events for the forthcoming year. This calendar of events can be seen on the website. The forum gave each of the clubs the opportunity to discuss with the VSA Committee what direction and activities they felt would be beneficial for the sport. A consensus was reached that Coach development and retainment of Senior Athletes into coaching roles was a major priority for the sport to continue to grow. With the EA Coaching syllabus undergoing a major review the VSA Committee is having discussions with John Eccles as to his availability to conduct a FEI Level 1 Coaching clinic in mid 2019. Club Insurance is another topic that VSA is having dialogue with Equestrian Australia through the EAV Committee. Club Insurance for Vaulting Clubs through the current policy premium matrix is proving expensive for most clubs. A request has been tabled to EA whether there is a better model for calculating insurance premiums for Vaulting Clubs. The Equestrian South Australia Awards Night was a great evening. Congratulations goes to the Award winning Vaulters Zac Singlehurst for receiving Senior Male Vaulter of the Year & Emma Moulds for being awarded Senior Female Vaulter of the Year. The Junior Male Vaulter of the Year was presented to Ben Rosiak and Junior Female Vaulter of the Year was awarded to Lainie Thomson. Official Horse of the Year was awarded to Next Generation Romulan.
The Associate Vaulter Awards will be presented at the first Vaulting Competition in March. Congratulations to Jamie Hocking who currently is training overseas in Denmark with his horse French Kiss. He has been invited to participate in several World Cup Events and done Australian Vaulting proud with his results. He has also been invited to participate in a Youth Forum by the FEI and is preparing for WEG in the United States. The Gillian Rolton Youth Development Scholarship event was conducted at Marlene Hunts Indoor Arena near Nairne. The event was well supported with Robyn Oram-Thomson and Nina Fritzell sharing their Coaching skills and knowledge with the participants. The selectors of the Scholarship recipient were Di Goldsworthy and Emma Moulds. Thank you to all who assisted with the program the feedback from everyone was most positive. Skye Barrowcliffe was the successful candidate for the Scholarship. Congratulations Skye. I would like to thank the Staff of the ESA Branch for their work and dedication that went into both the Gillian Roltan Youth Development Scholarship and the Equestrian South Australia Awards Night. Both events were very enjoyable and well organised. I understand how much work and effort that goes on behind the scenes to conduct such activities, much of it going on unnoticed. Well done to all involved at the office and thank you. I am looking forward to this years round of competitions and everyone participating and enjoying our wonderful sport.
