CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT
4 | FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | SUMMER 2016/17
Equestrian SA Chair Report This is my last report as Chair. At the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in late October two new Board members were appointed to ESA, Karin Edwards and Jacqui Lang and Stuart Platt was reappointed to the Board. Judy Whyntie and Caroline Jones retired from the Board at the AGM. I wish to thank both Judy and Caroline for their untiring work, commitment, ideas and energy that has both benefited the Board and the members of ESA. Their contribution will be sadly missed. Leading up to the AGM, Michael Haese, Manon Strachan and Shaun Flynn resigned from the Board. As the Board is skill based, the following gaps in the skills were public relations, legal knowledge and education/official knowledge. Mr Joe Hooper was identified as a member with legal skills and was appointed to fill a vacancy prior to the AGM. The Board has elected the following office bearers. Joe Hooper Chairman, I was elected Deputy and Stuart Platt Chair of the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee. The other 2 casual vacancies have been advertised on the ESA Web page. Additionally, members were appointed to each discipline, to provide feedback and communication to the Committees and the Board. The following Board Member Discipline appointments were made: Dressage

The 2016 – 2020 Strategic Plan is still in draft form and will shortly be put on the website for comment. Please take time to review the plan, as it is your ESA and we do need your input to ensure we are aware of the needs of the members for the next four years. It will be unable to be finalized until the Equestrian Australia Strategic Plan is finalised, so that the ESA can ensure that our plan doves tails into the EA plan. Congratulations to Gill Rolton and the fantastic team for again staging a very successful Australian International Three Day Event. The complimentary events held during the 3 Days, Show jumping, Interschool jumping with the Cone competition by the Carriage drivers, and the FEI CDE competition, enabled other disciplines to be show cased during the competition. I also wish to congratulate Jill Rolton being inducted into the Legends SA Sport Hall of Fame at the recently held Sports Awards. Jill is very worthy recipient and has joined the ‘greats’ of South Australian sports people. I wish you and your family a happy and safe Christmas and fruitful New Year.

Tail Blocking in Australia It has been drawn to ESA attention that the practice of “tail blocking” may be occurring in Australia. This can involve the injection of an unregistered chemical.
NEWS
News Check your Equestrian SA membership or horse information on line with My EA!
Tail blocking is a medical/surgical procedure that alters the tail set and carriage of horses to reduce and/or prevent tail movement. Tail blocked horses have varying degrees of permanent to semipermanent tail paralysis.
Equestrian Australia and the State Branches in conjunction with Nominate have launched MyEA – an online portal for EA members.
It is a practice that:
Through MyEA you can complete member registrations online, manage your details, view results and more.
• Can have serious welfare complications for the horse
• Is banned/prohibited under the rules of all Equestrian sporting bodies worldwide
• Cannot be justified as a therapeutic procedure • Gravely threatens the image and integrity of our sport
MyEA consolidates all the important functions that members need to access.
Take a tour of MyEA today by clicking on the button below. Please note you will need your EA member number and password to access MyEA. If you do not remember your password you will be able to retrieve this by following the prompts on the next window.
ESA is advising all members that the practice of altering the tail carriage of horses by medical, chemical or surgical means is banned under EA rules and the Code of Conduct for the Welfare of Horses. Responsible person(s) found to have altered the tail carriage of EA registered horses will receive sanctions under EA disciplinary rules. The practice of tail blocking in horses has no place in Equestrian sport and will not be tolerated.
Access MyEA button here
ESA encourages anyone who may have information regarding “tail blocking” to contact ESA.
You can reset your password through the log-in page available here. If you have forgotten your member number you will need to contact your State Branch.
How do I access MyEA? MyEA is exclusive to EA members; all you need is your EA member number and password. To access the portal simply visit the page here
What if I have forgotten my user name or password?
What if I am a new member, how do I gain access to MyEA? Before you can gain access to MyEA you will need to become a member of your State Branch. Becoming a member is easy and can be completed online and follow the instructions for new members here.

Helmet Regulations Updated
fastened at all times. The same is recommended when riding a horse at any time.
The helmet approved standards list has been updated in the Equestrian Australia (EA) General Regulations as from 19 October 2016.
Protective headgear must conform with one of the current approved safety standards:
Current American standard SNELL E2001 and British standard PAS 015 have been added to the list of approved safety standards to offer a wider range of choice for our members. The new Australian ARB HS 2012 standard has been added to the ongoing and current AS/NZS 3838 Australian standard. This standard has been published by Racing Australia in 2012. EA’s responsibilities include maximising safety in our sport. That is why from now on, except where Sport Rules allows otherwise, riders and drivers competing in an EA competition, must wear an approved helmet with the chin strap fastened at all times. The same is recommended when riding a horse at any time. Judy Fasher, Chair of EA says “Equestrian Australia is pleased to have aligned our rules with international standards for riding helmets. The new rules offer variety, combined with the most advanced technology available in the production and design of riding helmets.” Following the withdrawal of the safety standard EN1384 in Europe during 2014-2015 EA had followed the movement in February 2016 by informing members that the EN1384 standard would not be permitted as of 1 January 2017 and that in addition, the new VG1 was a new approved standard on the list. The year notice gave riders time to purchase new helmets if necessary. See the February 2016 statement here.
As per the EA General Regulations, Article 122.2: Dress and Salute, the following will apply: Except where Sport Rules allows otherwise, riders and drivers competing in an EA competition, must wear an approved helmet with the chin strap

Outgoing European Standard EN/1384 during 2016 only – not permitted from 2017. The accepted safety standards can be found at all times on the EA website here and in the General Regulations here. Helmet Manufacturers generally recommend replacing your helmet every 5 years or so. If you have a hard-blow impact accident while wearing your helmet, immediately replace it for a new model. There may be damage to the helmet that is not visible to the naked eye.

CARRIAGE DRIVING
SUMMER 2016/17 | FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | 9
Winners of the Carriage Driving Ride and Drive contest on Friday night. with Eventer Megan Jones Driven by Deb O’Dowd, Jumping by Connor Reed (not pictured)
The FEI One Star Event 6th November 2106 The ESA Carriage Driving Committee held the second FEI event for SA in conjunction with the Aus3de. It would not have been possible without the support of the Gillian Rolton and the Board of the Aus3de and for which we are very grateful. We are a small but dedicated committee with the aim of promoting and moving Carriage Driving forward . Hopefully there is another Boyd Exell in our ranks. We have three promising young drivers who competed at the event – in FEI Horse and Pony classes and a pony pair in the EA classes. We held EA classes to boost the competitor numbers. The event consisted of a Dressage and Cones competition in the morning ( Format 3 in FEI Driving Rules ) and a Combined Marathon in the afternoon. The later consisted of a series of cones and 2 marathon obstacles driven as a fault competition. Our FEI judges were Jennifer Nichols , Head of Ground Jury from NSW, Peter Harkness Course Designer from Victoria and Andrea Webb FEI steward from NSW. Other judges and officials. ( TD ,cone driving judge , assistant course designer, assistant steward, dressage judge were all EA qualified judges. The committee was overwhelmed by the support given to the event by the driving community and the ESA office. As our entire dressage arena and cones course had to be set up after the conclusion
of the Aus3de cross country at 4pm, this task was completed by driving enthusiasts and competitors. On the Friday evening of the Aus3de we held a Jump and Drive event which consisted of 6 driven combinations and 6 Interschool riders who negotiated the show jumps. An Olympic celebrity including Shane Rose and Stuart Tinney rode on the back of the carriages. This was a lot of fun and attracted a crowd of spectators. Unfortunately we did not attract any competitors from Interstate as our event clashed with another held in NSW however the total number of competitors exceeded that of 2015. We look forward to 2017 and the opportunity to make this event bigger and better. To this end we would like to:
• run a 2 star as well as a one star FEI event or at least have a marathon course as part of the one star.
• expand our media coverage to encourage more competitors from interstate, SA and spectators
• explore the possibility of a Masterclass given by a driving celebrity
• incorporate a seminar for driving officials. Again thanks to Aus3de, ESA , EA and committed drivers.

SUMMER 2016/17 | FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | 11
Successful applicants of the 2016 Dressage Youth Development weekend, with Dirk Dijkstra and Selector Jen Gilligan.
Welcome to the new year of Dressage in SA! We hope that you’ve all battled through the wetterthan-usual months, and have stayed as mud-free as possible.
make the effort to thank these volunteers when you see them – their efforts have been long-standing and have had a huge impact. Thank you!!
At the first Dressage SA Committee meeting of the new season, we welcome our new co-Chairs, Belinda Lindh and Collette Wheadon. Well done to these two very productive and efficient committee members who we have no doubt will further grow the sport this year. Vice-Chair was also elected with Carly Boon retaining this role. At the time of writing this, the committee roles and new members were in progress, so if you notice omissions, this is why – keep an eye on the DSA web page for the most up to date information. Further portfolios will be assigned at the next committee meeting and the work for the year will be in full swing.
We will also welcome new committee members, which will be announced once the formal processes have been undertaken.
Of course, we must mention a huge thank you – which doesn’t seem nearly enough! – to outgoing Chair, Lorraine Wohling. Many of you would already be aware of the huge impact Lorraine has had on Dressage SA over the past years. When you see her at an event (which she will now have time to ride at!), please do thank her personally for her efforts. We thank and farewell long-term committee members Jen Gilligan, Helen Whittle and Gerry Wellington, and wish them all the very best in their future endeavours. All SA dressage riders should
It has been great to see our SA riders out supporting events even in the wet and cold. The past months have seen another fantastic Treasure Trove event, run by the Senior Squad members, at Southern Vales. Again, another great event where riders won donated rugs from the Squad riders. What a thrill for riders to take home championship rugs at levels above their own – some very excited riders and well-dressed horses! Well done to the Squad riders for making these fundraising events such a fun and successful weekend. For 2017, we are pleased to announce some important changes to the SA Dressage Squad. Full details can be found either on the Dressage SA Website, or linked on our Facebook page. As a committee, we are always looking for ways to develop new initiatives to add value for members, and encourage participation and high performance. As a results of discussions, some of the major changes include:
12 | FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | SUMMER 2016/17
For senior DRESSAGE
• We are introducing a new squad – ‘Progression Squad’ for horses competing in Novice/ Elementary & YH Classes, and,
• Removing the age restriction of the horse on the Advancement Squad.
For junior/young rider • It is now a ‘Youth’ squad which sees riders up to 25 years eligible to apply for the squad, and
• Qualifying scores from Novice and above only. Applications for the 2017 Squad riders are to be in by Thursday 15 December, as per the form available on the website. Please do spread the word of this great initiative – we hope to be overwhelmed with applicants. Well done to Belinda Lindh as Squad Coordinator for getting this change up and running for next season. Don’t forget that the SA Dressage Championships (State Champs) are well underway! This fantastic event is scheduled for 11th – 12th April 2017. This exciting event will be held at the Strathalbyn Polo Grounds, and we are anticipating a lot of support and fantastic dressage! The Committee is working closely with the grounds committee to ensure that the grass surface will be of the highest possible quality, and has engaged agronomists and professional advisers to ensure they best preparation occurs. Considerable funding is also being input to support the preparation of the grounds. We hope that riders in SA will support this event and will trust that we are working hard to
make sure the surface is of a high quality, with work being undertaken prior to the event. In November, the SA Youth Dressage Scholarship weekend was held at the wonderful McLaren Park Equestrian Centre – thank you to Sue for providing such a professional venue. Ten riders from SA welcomed Victorian coach Dirk Dijsktra for a weekend of coaching. Dirk and Jen Gilligan formed the selection panel, and reported that all rider presented themselves professionally – the future of dressage is bright! Congratulations to the following riders who were selected for this event: 1. Phoebe Foulkes 2. Nicole Berry 3. Molly Ellis 4. Jessie Smith 5. Claire Hodge 6. Jemma Dodd 7. Samantha Coleshill 8. Courtney O’Leary 9. Emily Tickner 10. Keely Menadue The winner of the $500 coaching scholarship will be announced at the ESA Awards dinner in early 2017 – we can’t wait to hear who has been the successful winner! Don’t forget to ‘follow’ the Dressage SA page on Facebook for all your instant news and updates! It’s great to see so much engagement, and the community of dressage joining in on discussions. COACHES CORNER
14 | FROM THE HORSES MOUTH | SUMMER 2016/17
Coaches Corner. Evidence Based Training The welfare of horses in sport is increasingly being scrutinised and coaches are at the forefront of educating the equestrian community in best practices in horse handling and training. Some of the best information a coach can arm themselves with, is found in evidence based training. We now have a substantial body of evidence in equitation science. This emerged as an academic discipline in 2006 and combines learning theory biomechanics and ethology to examine the importance and efficiency of more traditional horse training techniques. This is not a “method” of training but an overview of all techniques, based on the knowledge of how the horse processes information about the world (cognition), how the horse/rider move (biomechanics) and equine behaviour needs and preferences, learning, value systems and motivation (ethology). The application of equitation science to coaching was presented by Dr Andrew McLean at the 2014 ESA coaches seminar and was very well received. Knowledge of horse/rider biomechanics has increased enormously in the last 10 years and new technology such as rein pressure gauges, saddle pressure analysis and GPS on horses legs have produced useful data to confirm or negate what trainers thought they were observing. As coaches, updating and using this information allows us to develop skills in riders more efficiently. It may sound complicated but snippets of evidence based information can transform training. A good example is “apply the aid in the swing phase of the target leg (sounds like a no brainer of course as you are not going to apply the aid when the hoof is on
the ground!). But applied rigorously with accuracy and reliability can transform the ease of response in the horse. Equitation science can influence our sport for the better at the competition level also. The dressage rule change 1/1/2017 permitting snaffle bridle use at Advanced and all EA-FEI levels is a welcome result of evidence and common sense. This rule change was on the wish list of the first International Equitation Science conference in 2005. Resources for coaches in equitation science are gradually becoming more easily available. “Horse and People” magazine published in Queensland (and available online) is a good source of interesting evidence based information covering many aspects of the horse industry. Manuela McLean published 14 articles in this magazine during 2015/16 titled “Boost your dressage scores and with learning theory” which is an excellent resource for coaches.. The articles are also available at aebc.com.au/news. Dr Hilary Clayton has written 6 excellent books on biomechanics, the most recent of which is called Equine Locomotion. Dr Andrew McLean has published 5 books in addition to DVDs so there is solid reference material available. For those coaches who wish to further add to their knowledge, The International Society for Equitation Science will be holding their annual conference at the Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga in late Nov 2017 (dates tbc). Most recent conferences were in Vancouver 2015 and. Saumur France 2016. These are key events in the international equitation science calendar (equitationscience.com)
Meet our new Pathway Manager for Coaches Alison Gestier comes to us with ten years of experience in sport development and education and is well versed with the Australian Sports Commission’s National Coaching Accreditation Scheme. Most recently, Alison has been working with Macquarie University Sport in a role spanning swimming, martial arts and gymnastics. Prior to this, Alison led the education program for Gymnastics NSW for four years developing courses aligning to the VET sector and rolling out a new education pathway and undertook various roles with Pittwater Sports Centre and Gedling Borough Council. Sport, education and managing/mentoring coaches has been a strong theme in Alison’s career. Alison completed her physiotherapy degree in the UK and has since completed diplomas in business management and HR, as well as her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. She has also undertaken considerable volunteer work in her local community. Recently Alison visited ESA to meet the Coach Committee and outline her thoughts and priorities for Equestrian Coaching. She feels that it is important for Coaches to have support to move through the levels by having resources clearly available and able to be delivered across a variety of educational platforms. Alison also wants to improve the marketing of the NCAS brand for coaches and to make it valuable for
coaches to aspire to higher levels. It is also important, she thinks, for riders of all levels to recognize the value of using NCAS trained coaches. Engaging the wider equestrian community by promoting the skills and experience of NCAS Coaches can only add benefits to the sport. You can contact Alison at
alison.gestier@equestrian.org.au and on 02 8762 7709.
Here are Alison’s 3 Key priorities for coaching education:
Streamline existing pathways and encourage ongoing professional development
Clear communication and transparent policies and processes assist all levels of coaches
Increasing accessibility of coaching education with consistent resources and online an learning system

Australian International Three Day Event Firstly I report on an honour awarded to Equestrian SA’s Gill Rolton. At the annual KPMG SA Sports Hall of Fame and Advertiser Channel 7 SA Sports Awards on Thursday 17th November, Gill was promoted to LEGEND status as a Member of the South Australian Sport Hall of Fame. Gill, (Eventing Team Gold Medallist, Barcelona & Atlanta) together with Victor Richardson from Cricket, joined the elite group of only 3 prior Legends, - Sir Donald Bradman (Cricket), Barrie Robran(Football) and Bart Cummings (Racing) – selected by a panel from media and all Sports. As well as being a great personal honour, Gill is the first woman selected as a legend in SA Sport, it is also great for Equestrian Sport. Gill is also Event Director of our most successful & prestigious Event, the Australian International 3 Day Event held in Adelaide City’s East Parklands. This year’s event expanded to include the inaugural Equestrian Australia Dual Crown in Eventing & Jumping, plus a round of the Thomas Foods International World Cup Showjumping as initiated last year and this year included a new RM Williams CIC3* class run along the lines of the Event Rider’s Master series in UK. This format for the RM Williams CIC3* made for an exciting finish as the 5 highest placed riders started their final cross country phase in reverse placing order such that the winner was

The prestigious $120,000 Adelaide CCI4* class had no SA riders this year and was won convincingly by NSW’s Hazel Shannon & Clifford, who had added only 0.4 time faults cross country to their dressage score and show jumped double clear, to finish on a good score of 52.5. This victory added to Hazel’s points from Melbourne 3DE making her the inaugural winner of the Equestrian Australia Dual Crown Eventing supported by SA Tourism . However, it was hotly contested on the final show jumping day where a double clear round to (ex show jumper turned eventer) Andrew Barnett & Bradgate Park Dante elevated them from 4th to give them a narrow win over Katja Weimann & BP Escapade who dropped one rail and Young Rider, Gemma Tinney & Annapurna, who had led throughout dressage & cross country, but faltered with 2 rails to lose that lead and finish in 3rd place. As consolation, Gemma was the clear winner of the Young Rider award. SA rider, Luke Jones & Music completed in 14th place and Emily Daley & Aremdale Donn Piatt completed in 27th place. Reynella is now going ahead this current weekend, 19 – 20th November, with a curtailed program of lower level classes up to EVA105 & an unofficial CNC1*.
Adelaide 3DE 2016 Emily Daley. PHOTO: Courtesy of the Australian 3 Day Event. will allow them to be transferred to the April calendar date next year. The cross country course has had a major re-vamp by Course Designer, Wayne Copping, and now runs in the reverse direction – perhaps, like Badminton, we will be changing directions each year ? The highest XC course this weekend is the EVA105, but the feedback is that the jumps are very much up to standard and even use old 3* fences, appropriately redesigned I am sure. Cross country and show jumping both proved a little more difficult than usual on Sunday accounting for numerous faults, however it was a State Championship and the winners well deserving of their titles. There was much envy around for those winning the smart lightweight summer winner’s rugs donated by Horseware Australia, made up and printed in Ireland and sent over especially for this event. Horseware Australia sponsored the Cross Country and Show Jumping while Bit Bank Australia sponsored the Dressage, in conjunction with our naming rights Sponsor, Infinite Lending Solutions.
Luke Jones & Music on cross country over the Marquee Houses. It was pleasantly surprising to arrive at Reynella venue this morning to see all the hard work put in by committee in improving the grounds, with new white fencing and a new cross country warm up area with XC practice jumps and a new verandah over the shed entrance for scoreboard & seating. The judges boxes from Adelaide were also in situ on the dressage arenas, making it all look very professional. Pity there is no 1*, 2* & 3* CIC, but hopefully the FEI
EVA 105 was won by Jaimie Stichel & Kirby Park Irish One on 61.4 just a bit ahead of Steph Hann & True Celebre on 62.7 with Ashleigh Westcott & Babingtons Revenge, (on limited loan from Georgie Watson) in third. EVA 95 was won by Rebecca Martin & the beautiful palomino, Jaybee Amigo from Courtney Munro & the smart pony, Aylestone Park Apple Blossom, while the experienced Fiona Heysen (who also judged dressage as well) & Kalinga Nora came in third.

EVA 80, Division 1 was won by Charlie Germein on Jan Macpherson’s Tik of Faith from Sonia Steinemann & Star Light Eclipse and Rianna Jordon & Fevolenko in third. EVA 80, Division 2 was won by Alyssa Penley & a beautiful TB, Fiction on a smart score of 40.1 from Jaimie Stichel & Leonardo’s Puzzle with Jamie-lea Burns in third. EVA 65, the largest class, for Newcomers was won by Meredith Phillips & Westbury Park Roxburgh from the comeback story of Karen Carmichael & Rochester. Karen, a past Chaiman of SAHT, was having her first start in 7 years ! Well done Karen. Jo-anne Lowe & Unpredjudiced came in third.
The final presentation for the year of the Barastoc Leaderboard was postponed due to some confusion over final scores. The Youth Development Scholarship weekend for Eventing was held on November 26 and 27th at Reynella with Martin Plewa of Germany as the Eventing Instructor. We are pleased to have such a high quality of applicants for this year’s scholarship including several past winners in the top group of 10 riders. The second tier of 8 applicants were sufficiently deserving to have been invited to attend the weekend also as participants, though not eligible for the scholarship, with some coaching for that group to be done by Gill Rolton and Tracey Leigh.

Gillian Rolton OAM Awarded Legend Status in SA Sports Hall of Fame! Gillian was given her first horse at the age of 10 and thus began an illustrious career in equestrian eventing. With Gold from the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games, and a number of Australian Championships to her credit, Gillian Rolton is one of Australia’s greatest riders and the first Australian woman to medal in equestrian. Her inclusion in the 1992 team was third time lucky after missing out on team places at LA and Seoul due to injury. She returned to the Olympic Games in 1996 with her beloved Peppermint Grove to again be a part of the Gold Medal Team not withstanding a broken collarbone and ribs. She was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2000. On behalf of the Equestrian SA Board and Members we congratulate Gill Rolton on being awarded the KPMG South Australian Sport Hall of Fame LEGEND Award as recognition for all that you have achieved in Equestrian Sport.

Interschool Nationals 2016 in Sydney with TEAM SA about to enter the Main Arena together for the last time and be awarded the NATIONAL TEAM SPIRIT AWARD!
2016 Interschool Australian Championships 2016 was a huge year for Interschool in South Australia. With a three year sponsorship agreement with Mitavite, there were more qualifying events, higher rate of participation and a much stronger team heading to the Australian Championships. The 2016 SA Team was the biggest South Australia has ever had with 48 riders selected to compete in Sydney. Captained by Sophie Ludbrook, with Team Leaders Mary Nitschke, Demi Taylor, Liv Beissel and Sophie Knight, the team once again brought home the Team Spirit award. Congratulations to the whole team on your support of each other, showing the other states what Team Spirit really means, and congratulations to the riders that placed individually in their classes. Thank you to coaches Megan Jones, Di Keach and Clive Reed for making the trip to Sydney, sharing you knowledge with the riders before and after the event, and for helping them to arrive safely with sound horses. Thank you also to Charlie Germein for your contribution to Interschool in 2016, your enthusiasm was contagious and showed in the team throughout the season.
Behind the scenes there are countless hours from volunteers to help run the events for Interschool riders, without the support of parents, volunteers and sponsors Interschool events would not be possible. Thank you to everyone that contributed in any way during 2016, I hope we will have your continued support in 2017.
Interschool in 2017 The Australian Interschool Championships in 2017 will be held in Toowoomba from the 2529th September. Ali Madill and Daisy Lane Huntsman National Champions 2016
ESA Show Horse of the Year and Team SA By the time you read this the SA Team will have made its to Werribee for the ‘Nationals’. Only winners and runners-up from each state EA Horse of the Year (HOTY) can qualify for the National Championships. SA’s 2016 Mitavite HOTY was held on 14-15 October on the beautiful Royal Adelaide Show grounds main arena. The showground is a perfect venue for the peak show of the Equestrian SA show horse calendar with plenty of stabling, spacious working areas and picturesque competition rings. Qualifying is a huge honour and is often the result of many months and often years of hard work training and preparing horse and rider. There is a story behind every successful qualifier and for some the journey has been a difficult one. Take Sally Bond, last year’s winner of the Rider 14-17 years. Sally had the misfortune to suffer a very serious riding accident earlier in the year. Just two weeks before the HOTY Sally was unable to even get on a horse. But courage and determination saw her push through the pain and jump on a borrowed horse to be awarded Runner –up Rider 15-17yrs to Champion Jemimah Watson.
The six interstate judges, David Calbert (NSW), Allanah Bigg (QLD), Judith Hill (QLD), Ann McClelland (NSW), Bev Richards (Vic) and Joshua Clark (Vic) had a busy two days judging 54 classes. All national qualifying classes require three judges, who rotated throughout the show. The introduction of 14 new national qualifying Children’s classes to the National Championships this year provided a huge timetabling challenge for the SA HOTY. Many of our young riders had a very busy show over the two days piloting their own and other owners’ horses. Harry Beckel, Kate Kyros and Ella Manning all enjoyed multiple successes in the Championship, Children’s and non-qualifying classes. Several horses were back to back qualifiers this year including Shelly Pollard’s Medium Show Hunter Pony of the Year, Holly’s Twitter ridden by Margot Haynes, Alli Madill’s Small Show Hunter Galloway, Daisy Lane Huntsman (AKA Spider), Angela Forster’s Yildara Park Twilight, Large Show Hunter Galloway of the Year, Sarah Binn’s Willowcroft Safari, Runner-up Large Galloway of the Year and Chris Lawrie, Margot Haynes and David Quayle’s SA Small Hack of the Year DQ Grace, ridden by Chris Lawrie.

This is what it is all about, the SA kids supporting one another, celebrating the day, spreading the Team Spirit and showing their genuine joy at success whether you placed or not. Great role models for all, wouldn’t you agree? You do us proud TEAM SA - (L-R ) Millicent Quigley Smith, Isabella Schiller, Dallas Merry and Ella Manning riding Kate Halliday’s - Mirinda Jackpot after Ella placed third in Champion Junior Rider at the 2017 EA Nationals Horse & Rider Championships held in Werribee. Several of the new faces at this year’s show made the successful transition from newcomer to national qualifier. The Winner of the Newcomer Show Hunter Pony ne 12h, Isabella Schiller's aptly named Dunelm Fashion Star, ridden by Ella Manning went onto become runner up Childs Show Hunter Pony ne 12h, to the very successful Bamborough Prunella. Prunella , owned by the Holtham family and ridden by Bianca Evans had a super show winning the open, Childs and runner up in the Lead Rein Show Hunter ne 12h classes. Nicole Berry’s striking warmblood mare, Danson Debonair, runner-up Newcomer Show Hunter Hack, blitzed a strong field in the open class to win Champion Large Show Hunter Hack of the Year. The beautifully bred Rosevale High Alto, owned by Kate Halliday won its Newcomer Galloway class
and then went on to be awarded Runner-up Small Galloway of the Year. Record entries were received this year and the live streaming received many ‘hits’. The show was watched from as far away as the United Kingdom. Planning for next year’s show is already underway. A huge thank-you to all the generous supporters of the 2016 Mitavite Horse of the Year show; major sponsors: Mitavite, Harris Real Estate, Thoroughbred Racing SA and Equestrian South Australia, all the live streaming, championship and class and product sponsors, all those who volunteered throughout the show and the Royal Adelaide Show grounds for such a beautiful venue. Without your support this show would not be possible.

State Vaulting Champs November 2016 The South Australian Vaulting Championships was held at the Mallala Equestrian centre on the 5th and 6th of November. The SA vaulting committee were pleased to invite Robyn Bruderer and Chris Wicks from NSW and Janet Leadbeater from SA to be our official ground Jury. This event also attracted competitors from Victoria and the South Australian vaulting community generously provided horses to these athletes. The South Australian vaulting community is a small but vibrant group who would welcome new
members into our dynamic and exciting horse sport. Vaulting is gymnastics on horseback and combines the skills of both gymnastics and horsemanship. It provides for both individual and also for team participation in sport. Vaulting improves a rider’s seat, balance, rhythm and coordination as well as their confidence on the horse. In many clubs in Europe a period of vaulting is a prerequisite to riding. Why sit on horse, when you can stand on one!!
