Equestrian SA Chair Report From time to time there will inevitably be resignations from committees for many reasons. Our sport is no different to any other in this regard.

Joe Hooper, Board Chair, Equestrian South Australia

Dear Members, Wow! What a time for ESA – changes in accounting systems, changes in strategy, operational guidelines and strategic governance, changes in Discipline Committees – it all goes on to ensure that ESA Members are successful in their chosen Disciplines well into the future! Equestrian sport in South Australia has every opportunity to thrive, given the great commitment, passion and huge talent of our membership. The Board of Equestrian SA exists to support the sport we all love. We will continue to encourage riders, committee members, volunteers, coaches, judges and officials to give their best and I am confident that we will meet any challenges along the way with nothing less than the professionalism our members expect and deserve.

In a recent letter to all members, I thanked the individual Chairs and Committee Members for their contribution to our sport. As you know all too well, equestrian sport runs on the efforts and goodwill of our many volunteers who put in many hours, either at committee level, organising working groups and the officials and helpers on the day of any event. The goodwill amongst our members is fantastic and to those who contribute all the hours you do we are eternally grateful. We know it’s not always easy. I reiterate that it is the role of ESA to investigate all complaints brought to the Association under the rules and we take all such matters very seriously. We have a solid complaints process in place, an independent investigator for matters of a serious nature and we will seek to resolve any issue brought to our attention through these formal channels. Bullying has no place in equestrian sport—never has and never will. Bullying behaviour of any kind is unacceptable within our sport or our community. The ESA Board and members all share a responsibility to ensure bullying is reported and appropriate action taken. If you have any concerns about inappropriate behaviours through your association with ESA—as a rider, official, parent or spectator—please contact us as soon as practicable.

At a national level, all states and territories have expressed concerns about the way in which Equestrian Australia has been running. The SA Board has made its concerns known to Equestrian Australia and following a recent refusal by the National Board to hold a meeting with all the states, we have now sought a special general meeting to help address the issues we have raised for over a year. We will make sure your concerns are heard at the highest level. ESA is still rebounding from the mad April schedule, with major competitions being run in this period including.

• State Show Jumping Championship 6-8th April

• Show Horse Autumn Classic 8th April • Interschool State championships & Riders of the Future 14th – 15th April

• State Dressage Championships 28th – 29th April

• Hills & Barossa Horse Trials 21 & 22nd April • Vaulting Regional Champs & Competition in April/May

• Lockington Horse Trials 5 & 6th May • Naracoorte Horse Trials 19th & 20th May • Canoe Tree Horse Trials 2nd & 3rd June • Monarto Horse Trials 16th & 17th June The Show Jumping Official course is to be held in ESA Office on 30th June & 1st July, this is the only update to be run until after March 2019. Winter Woolies Gala Show 15th July Open and Encourage Rings available. Good luck to all competitors in these events and others. This month we will hold our 2nd Seminar in the High Pperformance ‘Off Horse’ education session at the Arkaba Hotel. Topics covered will be sports psychology, anti doping, alcohol and drugs in sport, and an overview

of attracting and maintaining sponsorship relationships. We thank all guest speakers for their time and contribution, which will be well received by over 40 squad members from all disciplines who will be in attendance. Whilst the membership is keeping busy, we at the Board have also been very active – listening to concerns raised and continuing to make the necessary changes to best direct our limited resources to serving you the membership as best we can. Last time I reported that we have finalized the move to a new accounting system and commenced providing the Discipline Committees with improved information on their budgets to help committees balance their organising of events. The fine tuning continues, but overall it is much improved. Other work being undertaken is our ongoing review of our internal procedures; delegations; communication processes; policies around complaints management and our membership engagement. We are also exploring some exciting development opportunities for the equestrian community that we hope to be able to tell you about soon. I appreciate such background work is not front of mind for our members, nor should it be. But it goes to the heart of trying to make sure we have as efficient and connected an association as possible. My thanks to all Board members for their hard work, our Executive officer Sharon and the office staff for their tireless support and commitment to make the changes necessary to make ESA a success in the future. Finally, thank you to all of you, our members who participate as Chairs, committee members, officials and volunteers…or competitors who turn up at our events and give your all in competition. Have a great Winter season and stay safe. Joe Hooper - Board Chair Equestrian SA

Stallion Identification update The Equestrian Australia Board has responded to the request for a review of rules in relation to the use of Stallion Discs. It was decided at the Board’s last meeting that green number holders should be displayed on both sides of the horse’s bridle, or, alternatively, green discs on both sides of the saddle cloth will also be accepted. When a stallion is being led or tied to a float or truck, green discs should be attached to both sides of the halter or head collar. Identification discs or numbers should not be attached to either martingales or breastplates. This is because both martingales and breastplates come in a variety of designs and as a consequence it is not easy to determine a point that accommodates all designs. EA State Branches Joint Statement

• The failure by EA to undertake adequate

The purpose of this statement is to inform our membership of the current actions taken by the undersigned State and Territory Branches in relation to Equestrian Australia (EA).

• EA’s refusal to meet with the State

The maintenance of a strong, safe and sustainable sport for the benefit of our members is our highest priority.

What are the State Branches doing? The majority of the State Branches have called for a Special General Meeting to amend the constitution to remove the current restriction on directors of state branches sitting on the EA Board. This decision was not taken lightly and is intended as an interim step only to deliver the reform that is necessary to ensure our sport meets the diverse needs of our members now and into the future.

Why are the State Branches doing this? Our action follows a series of unsatisfactory performance and/or inaction by EA including:

• Failure by EA to adequately respond to

State Branches’ repeated requests for full disclosure of financial information, combined with attempts to unilaterally increase fees beyond CPI.

• Failure by EA to fulfil it’s responsibility

under section 39 of the constitution to update the MOU with the state branches.

• Failure by EA to fulfil it’s responsibility

under section 29 of the constitution to hold a strategic forum at least every two years.

• The recent and sudden unilateral

decision by EA to cease the operation of the ICDF after the State Branches asked for transparency about the sources of

revenue and expenditure. due diligence in appointing three directors who were not members of the organisation.

Branches following a written request to hold a strategic planning day with an independent facilitator.

We acknowledge that the holding of dual roles as state and national directors is not ideal governance. However, we do not anticipate nor desire that it will be necessary for this to be anything other than an interim arrangement to guide the reform of the sport. While there has been recent promotion of one model for operating EA, namely the discipline led model as occurs in NSW and Tasmania, there are several options for future operating models. Any final model will need to accommodate the national interests and be applicable across all States and Territories. This requires a full and inclusive consultation process with all our membership which will occur in consultation with the membership and key stakeholders, including the Australian Sports Commission, something we are committed to undertake before implementing any change. Ultimately our goal is to act in the best interests of our members for the long-term benefit of our sport. David Finch

Warning regarding detection of banned substance Synephrine in Teff Grass Hay, Common Rush and Supplements Equestrian Australia wishes to warn its members about the prohibited substance synephrine which is currently listed by the FEI on the FEI Prohibited Substances List as a Banned Substance. Banned substances are substances that are deemed by the FEI to have no legitimate use in the competition horse and/or have a high potential for abuse. They are not permitted for use in the competition horse at any time. Synephrine is a stimulant known to affect the metabolism of body fat and has been demonstrated to cause an increase in blood pressure in human subjects consuming synephrine orally. Synephrine is traditionally found in the peel extract of bitter orange (also known as Seville orange), an ingredient found in a number of herbal and nutritional supplements which are promoted as weight

loss supplements and appetite suppressants in humans. Members are advised to avoid using supplements containing bitter orange or similar products as well as supplements whose active ingredients are not listed on their packaging. Synephrine has also been detected in certain plants, including common rush (Juncus usitatus -also called pin rush or mat rush), Mullumbimby couch (Cyperus brevifolus) and the leaves of citrus trees (mandarin, orange and lemon). Members should ensure that their horses do not have access to these plants. Racing New South Wales has recently advised that high levels of synephrine has been detected in Teff Grass hay analysed by the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory. Although this does not imply that all Teff Grass Hay is affected as this is likely a seasonal and regional issue, EA recommends that members do not feed this hay to competition horses. Synephrine has previously been detected in race day samples from racehorses in NSW, Queensland and Victoria. State Dressage Championships Winter is well and truly upon us now and we were very fortunate to have fantastic weather for the 2018 Pryde’s Easifeed South Australian Dressage Championships held 28 & 29 April at the Mount Crawford Dressage Club Grounds. Thank you to all the sponsors, judges, pencillers, stewards, volunteers, trade village stall holders and riders who all made it such a great weekend of competition. Thank you also to the organizing committee who put in such a huge effort prior to the event to ensure that it was such smooth running over the two-day competition. An honorable mention must go to Collette Wheadon who was the main driver of the event, and with a number of sleepless nights ensured that everyone got their jobs done! Not only was it great weather, but it was a fantastic, friendly atmosphere at the competition, and competitor numbers were up on the 2017 event. Well done to all

those that competed, in particular, those that competed for the first time. We hope that you had a great experience and will be back next year. A number of judges were recognized at the event, most importantly, Erica Taylor, one of Australia’s most successful international competitors, as well an B level judge, who has decided to retire from judging. Other judges that have also decided not to reaccredit include Marion von Saagh, Kerry Kirchner and Margs Lees. Thank you to all these judges. The contribution that you have made to the sport has not gone unnoticed and we hope to continue seeing you out and about at dressage competitions in the future. Congratulations must go to all the competitors that performed well over the weekend but most importantly to our 2018 Champions.

SA Carriage Driving EA Affiliated club Angas Harness Club were lucky enough to obtain funding to hold a Carriage Driving clinic at Mylor 5-6th May at Echunga. NCAS level 2 Coach and Judge Max Pearce from NSW officiated. Show Driving was discussed with such topics as suitability of a harness horse, different breeds, conformation and movement. Max has a great deal of knowledge and experience with Hackneys and ways to train them. Different workouts for show harness classes and turnout were covered. Driven dressage was discussed – driving different movements, one handed circles, marks allocated by judges, accuracy and more advances tests. Prue Copping, an Advanced ridden dressage and CD judge was able to comment on things such as paces, impulsion, obedience and lightness. Max’s main “claim to fame” is that he was instrumental in starting Boyd Exell in Carriage Driving in Bega NSW and had some interesting anecdotes. The second day of the clinic consisted of individual lessons where everyone was encouraged to contribute. The correct bit, tightness of nosebands and having a horse

that was comfortable in the mouth was paramount. Drivers varied in their level of experience as did the ponies/horses from a young Hackney pony to an Arab stallion to a recently broken in Clydesdale. Max was happy to drive them himself to “get the feel”. It was a worthwhile weekend which the club hopes to repeat again later in the year.

Kurt Uellendahl It is with sadness that the ESA Carriage Driving Committee and Angas Harness Club heard the news of the death of Kurt after a long battle with cancer. Kurt was a founding and long standing member of ESACD committee and President of Angas EA affiliated club. He was an EA accredited Judge and course designer and set up and designed many cones courses. He was a great host and hosted many dressage days and rallies at his Echunga property. His favourite was the drive out led by himself driving his horse Luter. He leaves us with an amazing and well set up trailer of equipment for CD events. He was known for doing the job properly and will be missed by the carriage driving fraternity.

Eventing

Eventing out and about

Last issue we reported on the early start to Eventing in Victoria at Geelong in February and Tonimbuk on March 10 & 11th, with many SA riders competing, notably Megan Jones & Kirby Park Impress, her National Squad horse, who won the CIC3* starting their quest for WEG on a good note.

Kirkcaldy Park HT March 17 & 18th started off the SA eventing season with a wind storm blowing down the dressage rings Saturday and early drizzle making conditions slippery on cross country early on Sunday, with quite a few faults in the EvA80. Karin Edwards as both landowner and Course Designer does an amazing job with a small committee to produce this event each year. The new innovation this year was the addition of the Jupiter Creek Pony Club HT run in conjunction with EA classes at Kirkcaldy Park. I must say although all classes finished on time, and ran with no problems, the collating of multiple scores & age groups, plus the Interschools competition within EA, made for complex scoring and time delays before a long Prize Presentation. In addition to a CNC 1*, a 1.5* was also offered which requires a 2* dressage test and show jumping 1m.15 with the 1* cross country course, as for 1* class. An easy way to partly upgrade a young horse, which several riders took advantage of.

CNC 1.5* was won by Anthony Thomas & ESB Irish Craft with the only double clear SJ round, from dressage leader, Rachelle Verma & Canterbury Sun Rose and Anthony in 3rd on Southern Warlock. CNC 1* was won by Danni Hampton & Wynara Bronze Medal from Hannah Hardy & City of the Moon with dressage leader, Rachelle Verma & Koyuna Dark Sun, dropping to 3rd. EvA 105 saw a second win on the day for Danni Hampton & Kalinga Nora (initially produced by Fiona Heysen), from Chloe Hittman & Tommy Fraar and Sahara Warren & Shropshires Big Ben in 3rd. EvA 95 had a larger field with 22 starters and was won by Enya Crockford & Bamboo Textiles Roulette from young Jasmine Fordham on the Connemara pony, Kahean Trooper Ohara in 2nd and Janeth Flowers & the spectacular pinto Grandview Fox in Sox in 3rd. EvA 80 Division 1 was won by Elouise Entraigues & Time to Test from Amelia Wallace & Emmooki Street and Rachelle Verma & Cleo 3rd. EvA 80 Div 2 was won by Chelsea Clarke & Dr Jamieson from Sophie Knight & Harry and Luke Jones & Remy Jones 3rd. EvA 65 was won by Cheryl Weekly & Pagan Magic. EvA 50 was won by Katie Banks & Ballymount Fancy That.

Eventing

Wandin, Victoria on 17 & 18th March clashed with Kirkcaldy, however some 4 combinations chose to compete at the amazing Wandin course with Connie Miller & Don Roccado placing 4th in EvA105 and Kate Bailey & Acacia Ridge Beaudancer 16th.

Reynella HT March 24 & 25th grounds looked a picture with some new fencing and tidying of shrubs around arena and additional new fences cross country, by CD Mick Pineo, extending the somewhat shortened courses of last year, and again using the more horse friendly track around the hills rather than directly up & down them. CNC 2.5* had only the 2 starters, but an important run for them in their lead up to the Sydney 3DE in April, with Megan Jones & Kirby Park Impress setting the standard with a 70% dressage, and scorching around double clear cross country to finish on a smart 33.3 somewhat ahead of her star pupil, Jaimie Stichel & Image Blue Ice, also Sydney bound. CNC 2* was won by Sarah Clark & LV Balou Jeanz from Steph Hann & True Celebre and Jessica McEwen & Allegero Diva in 3rd, the only 3 to complete with a 50% attrition rate at 2*. A very determined visiting big kangaroo was highly disruptive, firstly scared Image Blue Ice, then disappeared only to reappear right by the water jump as Megan’s recent New Zealand import, Impeccable, turned towards the water jump. Having never seen a kangaroo, he almost suffered a heart attack and even when it was chased away, Impeccable was so stressed that Megan quietly walked him home.

CNC 1* Was won by Rachelle Verma & Koyuna Dark Sun, by virtue of a double clear SJ taking her 1.5 ahead of Kate Bailey & Acacia Ridge Beaudancer, whose one rail proved expensive, with Anthony Thomas & Allegretto in 3rd. EvA 105 saw a win to Connie Miller on their dressage score of 34.2, but only 0.3 separated Jaimie Stichel & New World Rolls Royce 2nd from Ashleigh Westcott & Renown Mr Truman in 3rd. EvA 95 was won by Abigail Dibb & Kirby Park Northern Lights maintaining their dressage lead this time with only 0.1 separating Cathy Haensel & Caribou Sam from Enya Crockford & Bamboo Textiles Roulette, 34.2 & 34.3 respectively while 34.4 was 4th with young Jasmine Fordham showing the seniors how to finish on a dressage score! EvA 80 was a doubly whammy for Rachelle Verma taking the win in both divisions, both horses finishing on their dressage score, being double clear SJ gave both the win as second placegetters each had one costly rail. The Koster’s Cleo won Div 1 from Jaimie Stichel & the impressive WB, Danson Don Fiesta, with Jeanine Joubert & The Golden Rule 3rd. Rachelle’s own Gizelle won Div 2 from Juliet Hittman & Dobby with American visitor, Hannah Scherer & Peacetime in 3rd. Both Divisions had 25 starters, as did the EvA 95. EvA 65 saw young Carmen Koster & Coleraine Coaltown pipped at the post by Megan Jones on Elouise Entraigues’s Orange is the New Black 35.1 to 35.4 when Carmen dropped one rail to lose her dressage & XC lead to a 4* rider! Jason Andrews & Sandon Grove Cadence came 3rd of 23 starters.

Camden Equestriad, NSW, April 7 & 8th.

EvA 105 Div 2 Isabeau Garner & Fiction placed 6th.

Megan Jones made the trek to Camden as did Jaimie Stichel for the CIC 3*. KP Impress led the dressage on 25.4, but had an unaccustomed run out XC still completing in 4th place. Only 7 of the 17 starters completed, with Jaimie & Blue Ice retiring.

EvA 95 Kiv Agnew & Kokimo Jax placed 9th.

Camperdown Lakes & Craters 3DE, April 21 & 22nd. Held on the same weekend as Hills & Barossa in SA, some riders seeking CIC qualifications went to Camperdown, Vic. CIC 2* Stephen Bow & Va Va Voom placed 3rd and achieved their qualification for Adelaide 2*!!! CCI 1* Rebecca Martin & Jaybee Amigo placed 7th and achieved a 1* 3DE qualification. EvA 105 Div 1 Connie Miller & Don Roccardo placed 1st.

Hills & Barossa at Kirkcaldy Park April 21 & 22nd. After the previous weekend of soaking rain, Kirkcaldy Park was transformed into a tinge of green throughout and the going XC was so much better for that rain! Course again went in the same direction with less changes than last year, however the course still provided sufficient challenges at all levels. CNC 1* was won by Emily Nettle & Cash Cab from Danni Hampton & Wynara Bronze Medal this time into 2nd as Sahara Warren & Shropshires Big Ben dropped to 3rd on SJ rails. Danni was also 4th on Kalinga Nora in her first 1* start. EvA 105 A quinella here with 1st & 2nd to Enya Crockford & Bamboo Textiles Roulette

1st in their first 105, and The Griffon 2nd with our “comeback kid”, Rebekah Foster-Brown & Carisbrooke Legs Eleven returning to eventing, after years away having babies, coming in 3rd. Could have been first without that nervous rail! EvA 95 was won by dressage rider at Danson Dressage turned eventer, Craig Andrews & Belstone Lucille finishing on a dressage score of 28.3 ( Lucille was evented many years ago by Stephen Bow, before sale to a dressage home). Second to the flying Connemara pony, Kahean Trooper Ohara & Jasmine Fordham and 3rd to Trudi Day & Riverside My Mugatea. Great to see Karin Edwards back out competing on Schavello and placing 4th on her own course.

EvA 80 Div 1 was won by Tamzyn Schibrowski & Yarraman from Kelzie Schipp & Westbury Park Lexington with Sarah Clark & her lovely baby horse, Valkyrie S, in 3rd. EvA 80 Div 2 was won by Kristy Dodd & Cambiaso, (amazingly back winning after “kissing spine” surgery), from Rachelle Verma & Gizelle with Ruby Corner & Mixologist in 3rd. EvA 65 was won by Kendra Petney & Belcam Cara from Tracey Jacobs & Royal Convict with Zoe Hadley & Mr Milo in 3rd. EvA 50 was won by Katie Banks & Ballymount Fancy That (must be a Kirkcaldy Park 50 specialist – that’s two wins here!) from Isaac Gosling-heysen & Rocking Horse Park Regency and Trudi Day & Riverside Pebbles.

SYDNEY 3DE, SIEC, NSW April 28 & 29th. Only one SA competitor in the CCI 3* but Megan Jones & Kirby Park Impress were highly competitive to be lying a close 2nd after dressage and cross country but.... a sore foot from a stone bruise on day 3 meant Impress did not show jump as well as usual and dropped to 6th overall. Despite this setback, I believe Megan is still in the mix of Aussie based horses to fly to UK for final WEG training and final selection.

Two Wells Pony Club ODE, April 28 & 29th. EA classes at EvA 80, 95 & 105 were run in conjunction with this Pony Club event giving riders an opportunity for a further run, qualification or upgrade, which Janeth Flowers & Grandview Fox in Sox did, going up to place third in their first EvA 105 behind Jaimie Stichel & New World Rolls Royce who won to enable an upgrade to 1* for Lockington. EvA 95 is another win for Craig Andrews & Belstone Lucille, who is also stepping up to 105 soon. EvA 80 Ashleigh Westcott who leads from start to finish, is first on her very baby horse, Danson Donnerkiss & a close 2nd with another Danson horse, Oceanview Expresso.

Lockington HT, May 5 & 6th Another spectacular weekend of eventing at the beautiful properties of Phyll Whellams and Tracey Leigh, which has become, in my personal opinion, the best eventing venue in SA with its challenging cross country course, superb going and fantastic spectator viewing.

CNC 2.5* had only Jaimie Stichel & Image Blue Ice out for a run with a nice clear round, albeit a little slower than the competitive CNC 2* class won by Isabel O’Loughlin & Lagoes Choice, (back from a couple of years competing in Victoria), in a super quick cross country of only 1.6 time faults. Sarah Clark & LV Blue Jeanz made up for a slower XC round with the only clear show jumping to come 2nd, leaving Steph Hann & True Celebre in 3rd. CNC 1* saw another win to Anthony Thomas this time on Allegretto, making an impressive return from injury last Melbourne 3DE and well on their way to Melbourne 3DE again this year, winning on their dressage score of 35.8. A close 2nd was Rachelle Verma & Canterbury Sun Rose on 37, having an expensive 2 time faults cross country (but better that than walking home like last year!), and 3rd was Anthony again on Southern Warlock while his third mount ESB Irish Craft placed 5th – a good day ‘in the office’ for Anthony! EvA 105 was won by Connie Miller & Don Roccardo on her dressage score of 35! making it 3 wins in 3 starts 105 (at Reynella & Camperdown & Lockington) from Courtney Munro & Aylestone Park Apple Blossom and Rebekah Foster & Carisbrooke Legs Eleven in 3rd, for the second time on her comeback trail. EvA 95 had a huge class of 38 starters but again was convincingly won by Craig Andrews & Belstone Lucille with a 73.8% dressage and finish score of 27.8! from another flash young coloured horse, Viscount Visage & Danni Hampton on 34 and Rachelle Verma & Cosmic Crusader in 3rd (Cleo when she won Reynella 80, name upgrade for 95!). EvA 80 Div 1 was won by Ashleigh Westcott & Oceanview Expresso finishing on a

dressage score of 27.8 (72.2%) - this horse is for sale from Danson Dressage. Juliet Hittman & Dobby were 2nd and Kaitlin Teichert & Coolidowns Wrangler 3rd. Big fields of 29 in this and 27 in Div 2. Ashleigh Westcott took out the double winning the EvA 80 Div 2 on her own stunning young horse, Danson Donnerkiss, finishing on her even smarter dressage score of 26.8! Sophie Knight & Harry were 2nd and Kerrie Spiers & Spierwood Millington 3rd. EvA 65 Div 1 was won by Jacinta Schwob & Tasha from Sharyn Jong & G’day Mate 2nd, with Tamara Bakker & Kingsbrook Victory in 3rd. EvA 65 Div 2 was won by Octavia Shaw & Kalina – great to see Octavia back competing & winning when we once used to see her running our EA Office! Second to Megan Jones & Noodle (thought I saw a video of this at Sydney being vetted and it was only 10 hands. Pony change or name change Megan ?). Third was Alizee Mcgregor & Tommy.

Ballarat HT – CIC, May 12 & 13th. Torrential rain beforehand was a bit of a downer and many combinations did not run cross country, however the stand out result from a SA rider came from Steph Hann placing 2nd out of 33 riders in CIC 2*, most importantly completing her first double clear show jumping round at 1* or 2* level. Megan Jones & new ride, Impeccable finished 23rd with a qualifying result also in CIC 2*. Steph also placed 11th on Sonic Hit BHI in a division of Eva 80 while Megan placed 2nd in same division on young TB, Donna, and Chloe Jaksic & Insidious Ghost placed 21st. CIC 1* Danni Hampton & Wynara Bronze Medal completed in 20th and Kalinga Nora in 23rd place while Jaimie Stichel & New World Rolls Royce completed CNC 1*, and Image Blue Ice completed CIC 3* in 10th place. James Deacon & Del Sequoia placed 15th in EvA 105 and Cathy Haensel & Caribou Sam placed 8th in EvA 95.

WINTER 2018 | From the Horses Mouth | 23

Good weather and excellent going and a newly revamped cross country course designed & built by Wayne Copping (largely using big timber with no MIM’s clips in sight) brought us back to the more usual, challenging Naracoorte course – a fitting challenge for the SA State Championships. Unfortunately for SA competitors, all three Star classes were won by the same Victorian rider, Murray Lamperd, winning the CNC 3* on Toronto convincingly from Jaimie Stichel & Image Blue Ice. Murray & Pahia Wilhelm took out the CNC 2* from Megan Jones & Impeccable 2nd, with Sarah Clark & LV Balou Jeanz in 3rd – all combinations having clear rounds with confidence, looking towards Melbourne 3DE. Murray was successful again on Sebastian in the CNC 1* when he finished on his dressage score of 37.4 but only just ahead of Rachelle Verma & Koyuna Dark Sun whose one rail dropped them to 38, just clear of Anthony Thomas & Allegretto on 41.3 and Southern Warlock on 41.7. Close finishes! EvA 105 State Champion was at least a SA rider, Craig Andrews & Belstone Lucille extending their winning streak to 4 in a row and upgrading to 105, but still finishing on their dressage score of 25.4 and a cool 74.6%. The only contest was between 2nd & 3rd on 39.1 and 39.3 respectively with Beck Foster & Carisbrooke Legs Eleven (proving her comeback no fluke) in 2nd edging ahead of

Jade Kluske & Danson Gamestar, another good performance from this young horse. EvA 95 was a hotly contested class, won by the ever consistent Spierwood Millington & Kerrie Spiers on 35.5 just ahead of Chloe Thomas & Wilky Wheres Wally on 35.9 and equal score 35.9 to Luke Jones & new young TB, Remy Jones on count back in 3rd. EvA 80 Div 1 was won by Victorian Taryn Proctor & Koyuna Work Rest & Play from Juliet Hittman & Dobby, the perennial runners up – must be 3 seconds out of 4 completions I think – and another ‘comeback kid’ in Nigel Treloar placing 3rd on Mainga Here’s Hollie. Nigel used to compete against Juliet at Gawler in the past, but is now competing alongside his two daughters. On the same theme we noted that Leanne Hayward was also competing in the same class as her son Sam, and her daughter was making a comeback to eventing in the 65! The EvA 65 was THE most hotly contested class with a two way tie for 1st place requiring a countback – equal dressage scores, equal time cross country, all clear show jumping and it came down to the show jumping time to split the placings with Julie Robertson & Burlesque being 3 seconds slower than young, 11 year old Ella Manning on her feisty jumping pony Rivington Little Bird, who therefore won the class & State 65 Champs at only her second eventing start, after a ‘practice run’ at Lockington. A ‘well bred’ youngster here following in the eventing footsteps of both parents. Third was Katrina McDougall & BB Moulin Rouge.

State Squad Clinics Riders on both the State Senior Squad (2*/3* MER & criteria) and Development Squad (1* MER) have had the opportunity to train with past National Coach, Prue Barrett (dressage & eventing) in March and May pre Melbourne 3DE and have also had two show jumping clinics with Jamie Coman in April and again in May, also aimed at maximising training pre Melbourne 3DE.

Rule Clarification In last issue of horses Mouth I wrote : “Riders need to be reminded that after 3 stops/ refusals at one fence, or 4 refusals throughout the course, they are Eliminated and must not continue on course. This ruling now applies to all levels, not only official EVA95 and above, but also even EVA80 & below now”. To clarify the above. This is accurate for EvA 105 and all classes below that (95, 80, 65, 50 & 45).

The Rule changes for the Star classes, - 1*, 2*, 3* & 4*, may have only 3 refusals throughout the course. Refer to Article 548 Scoring - 548.1 Faults at Obstacles “a third refusal, run out or circle on cross country is Elimination”. Next month SA eventing riders are all aiming for the prestigious MELBOURNE 3DE, Werribee, June 9, 10 & 11, which will be the final WEG selection trial in Australia. Finally I would like to thank all the photographers who generously donated images to illustrate our sport with an emphasis on cross country jumping pictures. “A picture says a thousand words” Thanks to - Martin Waddingham, Emma Woolman, Pyt Equine Photography and Roger Foster, Steph and Rachel Heysen, and Abby Pinter, - all featuring in this issue. Interschool Competitions With the Interschool competition season finished for 2018, the focus has shifted to Team Selection to represent South Australia at the 2018 Interschool National Championships in Werribee. It will be an exciting time for South Australia with the potential to form one of the largest competitive teams to date with representation in all disciplines Before that happens however, it’s an appropriate time to reflect on, and celebrate what has been an incredible five months of qualifying competitions. Registrations

for Interschool this year have been the highest since inception, with all disciplines represented very strongly in both the Primary and Secondary categories. Riders and parents should be very proud of their achievements this year and we look forward to celebrating such achievements at the 2018 Interschool Awards Night being held at the picturesque Wallis Auchendarroch House in Mt Barker, on Friday 29th June. Well done everybody.

2018 South Australian State Jumping Championships In glorious autumn weather the 2018 South Australian State Jumping Championships were again held at the Wayville Showgrounds located close to the surrounding parklands of the City of Adelaide from Friday 6 April to Sunday 8 April. This year our premier jumping event saw record entries from far and wide. The program catered for all levels of horse and rider experience, from novice through to our National elite competitors. In addition to our talented SA riders, we were most fortunate to welcome some of Australia’s top riders from Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. We were again privileged to have Thomas Foods International as our naming rights sponsor of the event and Pryde’s EasiFeed and IRT sponsoring each of our arenas. This year we also welcomed Horseland Adelaide as a major sponsor. The valued support from all of our Sponsors and business partners was once again exceptional this year. Their support and generosity were instrumental in helping to set the stage of this spectacular event. We offer our sincere thanks and appreciation to all of our valued sponsors, including: ATCO Australia, Austin’s Peak Agistment, Bit Bank, Barton Equine, Coonalpyn Silo

Café, Coopers of Mt Torrens, David & Anne Lindh, Equissage Australia, Hann’s Horse Transport, Macdonald Dunlop, Mallala Equestrian Centre, Megan Jones Equestrian Team, Morphettville Equine Clinic (Horsemed SA), Mrs Rae Brice, Nick Roberts Equine Dentist, Bridget Dunn, Piccadilly Vineyards, Reed Equestrian Australia, Strathalbyn Showjumping Club, Thoroughbred Racing SA, Wansbone Nominees P/L. We thank both of our expert and professional course designers - Mr Graeme Watts of Queensland in the Pryde’s EasiFeed arena and Mr David Johnson of Victoria in the IRT arena who ensured the competition was first class. In addition to the excellent jumping on display throughout the three days, the Rider’s Lounge was again a huge success offering riders a place to relax ring-side whilst enjoying some refreshments throughout the day. The Dapple EQ VIP Marquee on Championship Day was once again a sellout class event. Our major sponsors, invited guests and ticket holders were able to relax and enjoy the fully catered lunch and experience the thrill of the competition of our top horses and riders in front row seats.

We could not have provided such a quality event without the patronage of our amazing sponsors and business partners. We are indebted to them all for helping to showcase this event and look forward to their continued support in 2019 as it continues to grow from strength to strength.

Live-streaming of the events in the main arena on Championship Day was a huge success giving many people interstate and overseas the opportunity to watch the event live.

We offer our sincere thanks to the ESA office staff and especially to all of our hardworking officials, stewards and volunteers. Without each and every one of you, this event could not be possible.
