FROM THE EDITOR

Live,Love,Lake ...Laundry

A

s we put together our third annual Lake Living issue, the anticipation was high and the pressure was on. With three full days of touring gorgeous lake homes and eclectic boutiques, we couldn't wait to show you some of the hidden gems in the Detroit Lakes and Ottertail areas. As we ventured through winding roads and picturesque woods, lost and frustrated with my poor navigational skills, we were often reminded why we hold the lakes country in such high regard. There is nothing that brings more peace to the soul as a day surrounded by sun, sand and nature, even if you have no idea where you're at. As a busy mom, it's far too easy to get caught up in obligations and daily burdens. Relaxation is a word I used to know. As Friday nears, I find myself wondering if maybe this weekend I should just stay home and catch up on life and, well, laundry. Excited but somewhat reluctant to head to my family's lake home, I turn the corner and catch my first glimpse of the lakeshore. Immediately the tiny voice in my head reminding me of my in-town obligations goes mute. At that moment, life's problems and obligations are put on hold ... at least until Sunday night. This is lake life. Slow, quiet, serene and redefining. A special thank you to all of the homeowners who so graciously allowed us to tour their

beautiful cabins and lake homes. A varied tour consisting of million dollar year-rounds, remarkable remodels and captivating cottages, nearly stole our hearts. As we have come to realize, each of these lake retreats, no matter how vast their differences, were built on the same premise. For the homeowners, having a lake home held sentimental, not monetary value. The true value was in the purpose — a place to reunite and once again bring their families together, even when obligations and life pull them apart. As summer's peak is just around the corner, let this issue be your reminder to make the most of this short season and maybe set your obligations on the back burner, at least for the weekend. Don't worry, the laundry will still be there when you get back. As always, a sincere thank you to our readers and contributors for helping to put each and every issue together. Your knowledge and feedback are invaluable.

PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS DEMONSTRATE COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION By Clay Dietrich, Dietrich Homes, Inc., HBA of F-M President

H

ome Builders Association of FM members hold professional designations from the National Association of Home Builders and the North Dakota Association of Builders because they care about their professionalism and want to demonstrate a commitment to continuing education.

Here is an explanation of the designations the HBA regularly highlights in its member directory, Parade of Homes magazine and Home & Garden Show magazine:

How do you earn a designation? To earn these designations, members must take NAHB-approved courses from a set curriculum and meet NAHB’s requirements. North Dakota Professional Builders must meet requirements that include contractors licensing, complying with building codes, adhering to a code of ethics and completing continuing education annually.

Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) Teaches technical, business management and customer service skills essential to competing in the aging-in-place market.

How can designations help? I hold the Certified Graduate Builder designation from NAHB. It helps open conversations with potential customers about our qualifications for designing and building their new homes. When we can talk with customers about the curriculum of the CGB program it gives us an opportunity to show our company as knowledgeable, experienced and professional, and I believe that others who hold a designation feel the same way.

26

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • J U LY 2 0 15

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HOME BUILDERS DESIGNATIONS nahb.org NAHB has the most targeted curriculum, accomplished teachers and widely respected education opportunities in the business. The following are brief descriptions of designations that HBA of FM members have earned:

Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) Emphasizes business and project management skills. Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) Emphasizes business management skills as related to a remodeling operation.

Clay Dietrich owns Dietrich Homes, Inc., with his son, Tom. Their company provides custom home-building services to the FM and lakes area. Clay has over 35 years of experience in the construction industry.

NORTH DAKOTA PROFESSIONAL BUILDER DESIGNATION ndbuild.com NDAB makes its best efforts to determine a builder’s qualifications for certification as an NDPB. While the program recognizes the professionalism of a builder, NDAB does not make warranty or representations, express or implied, to home buyers or others. It has not inspected construction of any home and does not and cannot address the quality of a home. NDPBs must do the following: • Meet membership requirements of their local builders association. • Must have held a contractor’s license in the state of North Dakota for at least two years. • Comply with all appropriate North Dakota statutes concerning contractors. • Build in compliance with appropriate local, state and national building codes. • Adhere to the Code of Ethics of North Dakota Association of Builders. • Complete seven credit hours of continuing education annually.

Certified Green Professional (CGP) Teaches techniques for incorporating green building principles into homes without driving up construction cost. Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCP) Demonstrates high level of knowledge, experience and education in the LIHTC (lowincome housing tax credit) industry.

The Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead promotes an environment in which members and their businesses can prosper.

An old house and gas station make up this unique store in the heart of the lakes destination area.

R

ed Willow has been a staple in Detroit Lakes, Minn., for the past 30 years, providing lake-inspired gifts, kitchenware and home décor products to tourists and residents of the area alike. The quaint, locally-owned store, which opened in 1984, sits right on Washington Avenue in the heart of town. The building used to be a gas station and 13-room house, which the owners later converted into a gift shop. Barb Engberg was one of the original owners of the shop. In 1992, she and her husband, Lane Engberg, took over the reigns. A few years later, in 2005, they opened a second Red Willow store in the Washington Square Mall, also in Detroit Lakes. The original store remains as Red Willow’s flagship; the old house stuffed with many different products from cutlery to artwork to furniture. “When we originated, it was a 13-room house and each room had a different theme,” Barb

Engberg said. “You’d walk from one feel to the next. We still carry that out upstairs because we have the four different rooms (upstairs) and so they’re all organized differently.” From its inception, Red Willow has been a family endeavor. Barb and Lane Engberg have gotten their two daughters involved, who help with ordering and stocking certain lines in the store. “They (daughters) do a lot of helping and that keeps things fresh,” Barb Engberg said. “I started when I was their age and now they bring it a new life because everything evolves.”

O

ne of many gems on the main drag in Ottertail, Minn., The Williams Company Store & Deli boasts far more than the eye can see. The owners, Marnie and Dan Whitehead, originally from Burnsville, Minn., were frequent visitors to the town with their own cabin nearby on East Leaf Lake. Growing tired of the hustle and bustle, the Whiteheads left their city life behind and happily traded it in for year-round lake living. ABOUT THE STORE Wanting to keep the store's vibe from the previous owner, Pamela Williams, the Whiteheads offer an extensive selection of gourmet food, wedding items, books, spa items, lake theme and nautical dĂŠcor. Throughout the store, local talent shines with handmade clothing, vintage jewelry, custom towels and local art. If the 500+ vendors in this storefront isn't enough to entice you, head out back to The Cottage, their backyard garden store. THE COTTAGE Take a walk through the backyard garden and explore the charm of The Cottage. Gorgeous accent pillows, hand-sewn curtains, Jaipur indoor/outdoor rugs, pottery and delightful art grace this rustic space. DELI Serving up soup, sandwiches, wraps, gourmet ice cream and coffees, The Williams Company Deli is a hidden hot spot with garden view dining.

FAIRY GARDENS Noticing that these whimsical gardens are becoming a popular trend, the Whiteheads consulted a local fairy garden expert who brought in pots and showed them how to build and layer indoor plants to create a fairy garden within. IN-STORE PARTNERS Proud of their vast selection, the Whiteheads have partnered with others like Wendy Billie, a local Yoga Instructor with a clothing line she sells at the store. Other local partners create everything from embroidered towels to custom curtain panels. EVENTS Hosting at least two events per month, the Whiteheads love to get the community involved with garden parties, yoga events, fairy garden how-tos and ice cream socials.

ith a mere 572 residents in Ottertail, Minn., this lake town boasts stores, sights and talents worthy of big cities. One of the must see stops on its quaint main street is the Red Brick Boutique and Coffeehouse. This historic building was once the town's creamery and has since taken on creative renovations to restore it's industrial elements and infuse some unconventional and artistic design. Check out the main level with boutique and coffeehouse or head upstairs for a service at the owners’ worship center, Firestarters. HISTORIC ROOTS The 1921 Ottertail Creamery was purchased seven years ago by the Thiel family with Pete Thiel starting renovations to open the store and the upstairs church five years ago. On our visit to the boutique, we spoke with daughter-in-law, Paula Thiel, about her role in the boutique and renovations. "I can’t take a ton of credit for it. The store is mine and some of the decorating, but my mother and father are pastors here at Firestarters, that’s who owns it, the group Firestarters. My father-in-law is the architect;

he’s not a licensed architect, he’s just really awesome at it," she said. Creating a space this community loves, its walls have hosted weddings, events, fashion shows, worship services and music events. HANDMADE JEWELRY On one wall of the boutique, Paula Thiel features her own jewelry line, Rust and Luster. This hand-made line is a combination of new, vintage and found jewelry elements. BOUTIQUE Throughout the boutique, shoppers will find an eclectic mix of home décor, jewelry, clothing, art and even chocolate. CUSTOM FURNITURE After we inquired about a reclaimed wood coffee table, Thiel said, "He’s (Pete's) kind of an enigma. For a living he has started to contract to do interiors. But he’s not a traditional, draw it out kind of person. I could never really see him making table after table after table. He does a lot of custom pieces."

FASHION SHOW HOST Don't miss next year's Diamonds & Pearls Garden Party & Runway Show. The historic creamery was transformed into a high fashion, outdoor runway featuring local artists and clothing designers for this year’s show. Creating the set was Sarah Theisen of Theisen Design Studios, also known for her work on The Boiler Room restaurant in Fargo. FIRESTARTERS Within this historic building on the top floor, Pam and Pete Thiel lead Firestarters Worship Center. Firestarters is a nondenominational church. Worship services are on Sundays at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and live music events are hosted throughout the year.

A WINNING DESIGN By Jayne Harms & Trever Hill Photos by J. Alan Paul Photography

nn and Jeff Clark went to the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show this past winter with only one thing on their minds: ideas for their new master bathroom. Stopping by the Design & Living Magazine booth, the Clarks registered to win a $500 room makeover from Design & Living Magazine with consultation from Trever Hill Design. Little did they know, the couple that Ann Clark said, "never wins anything", ended up as the big winners of a modern new look in their great room. The Clarks built their beautiful Rose Creek home 20 years ago through Building Concepts, but have since remodeled much of the home to fit their current lifestyle. Initially, the couple signed up for the makeover thinking that if they won, they would naturally put it toward remodeling their master bathroom. The Clarks soon realized that $500 wouldn’t go as far as they'd like for such a big project. Hill's challenge was to take that $500 and make the most out of it in the Clark's already beautiful home. Seeing that the house did not need dramatic makeovers in any of the rooms, he focused on a few details to polish up the existing spaces. The makeover took on a new purpose when Hill started playing off the angles in the great room to create a comfortable and functional space for the Clarks to enjoy. This made a significant difference and gave the space a whole new cozy feel. Hill was inspired by a beautiful batik, dyed cloth that Jeff picked up while on a trip to Indonesia and a vibrant glass bowl that had been a fixture in the space.

The oriental style rug pulls bright and punchy colors from the inspired piece of art in the room. Area rugs are a great way to update a space without digging too deep into your pockets. Rug from Scheels Home & Hardware $119, Pouf from TJMaxx $49.99

Accomplishing his goal, Hill managed to stay under his $500 budget with a final total of $491.02.

ABOUT THE HOME As a Pacific archaeologist, Jeff Clark’s primary focus is on the Pacific Islands. Because of this, the Clarks are fortunate enough to travel to many places where they have acquired a lot of unique artwork such as batiks and bark cloth.

“I love it. It needed some color. When I came home from work and saw it I was so excited. It really made a difference. Trever moved the furniture around just slightly and it now feels more conducive to the space.”

TREVER’S TAKE

“It was challenging to stay under the $500 budget. I started with furniture placement to go along with the architecture and angles of the room. I flipflopped the sofa and love seat on opposite walls. The furniture being pulled away from the walls actually makes the room appear much larger and makes for a cozy space to converse. By doing this, it also ended up connecting the side chair to the rest of the space. There were two art pieces that were the inspiration for the space. One above the fireplace and the other on the opposite wall. I also moved the accent pieces to different areas in the home, such as the vases on the island. Bringing them together and placing them on the island made a bold statement.” -Trever Hill

hannon specializes in metal sculpture and clay. Johnson is a silver jewelry artist. The two found each other 32 years ago when they were both exhibiting at an outdoor art show in Minot, N.D. As often is the case in North Dakota, the wind was terrible that year. “The winds completely blew over my booth and all of my batik paintings. There was broken glass everywhere,” Johnson said. “That’s when I showed up,” Shannon interjected. “He came to the rescue,” Johnson said, laughing.

THE GALLERY Forest Edge Gallery enchants visitors. In addition to Shannon and Johnson’s home, the grounds host the gallery building, Johnson’s jewelry making studio, two separate buildings for Shannon’s metal and clay studios and various outbuildings such as a chicken coop (no chickens this year) and storage sheds. A creek with a waterfall meanders through the property. There’s also a special patio area devoted to live music and guest seating.

The property is meticulously landscaped with annuals, each identified with a label so guests can know the plantings. Shannon pointed out a groomed area next to a large pond, anchored with two of his sculptures.“This flower garden is new this year,” he said. “We keep adding new things to the grounds every year.” The outdoor space also acts as a sculpture garden, showcasing Shannon’s large-scale metal and stone works. All are offered for sale. Visitors will find a wide range

Forty years ago, Shannon bought a cabin for $50 and moved it from Detroit Lakes, Minn., to its current location. Over the years, he added on to the structure, designing it to suit their needs. “We built the house to display our

art," Shannon said. “Both Helena and I are collectors.” Today, only one wall remains from the original cabin. As the main entrance to the house, it features a stone exterior and large wheel-like window. Shannon is nearly finished installing stones, enhancing the exterior of the entire house. He gathered the rocks from the property and elsewhere. “When I travel, I haul rocks back here. I’ll stop and collect rocks because I use them for my artwork,” he said.

DESIGN&LIVING ARTIST

FINDING HIS NICHE Shannon started working in metal 15 years ago. Before that, he was a potter. “I got an order for Kokopellis and they wanted the head to be copper,” he explained. “I ended up buying different sizes of copper. Then I bought a welder and found that I could weld on copper.” Today, about a third of his sales are special commissions for copper and steel installations in private homes and public spaces. “Out here, there are a lot of large buildings and large homes with fireplaces. People like to decorate with the large-scale pieces. Copper became the niche,” he said. Inside the gallery, Johnson’s silver jewelry fills the main jewelry case. Shannon’s copper wall platters and other sculptures fill the walls, along with the artwork of about a dozen other artists. “We feature artists whose work we love. Most of them are artists we met when we were doing summer shows,” Johnson said. Shannon recently returned to pottery and those new works can also be found in the gallery.

“Artists have distracting minds," Shannon said. “I think working on one thing all the time should be avoided if possible. I find it to be too restrictive. I might be working on something and do something similar later, but I improve on it. I also have artistic license to do what I want." Thinking ahead to the winter months, Shannon plans to work more with clay. He also hopes to add a metal forge to his collection of tools and machinery. When asked what he intended to make with the forge he said, “I’ll just make more.” WOMEN’S WEDNESDAYS A couple of years ago, Shannon and Johnson launched “Women’s Wednesdays” during the summer months. From 3 to 5 p.m., visitors are treated to gallery shopping, light appetizers, and live jazz. The events have been known to draw more than 100 visitors at a time. “People love coming out. They bring their friends and relatives," Johnson said. "Some have never been here before. Sometimes we have entire bus loads of people."

“We really have the best customers. They are happy when they come out here, and we do our best to make sure they are happy when they leave. We are very appreciative of the people who support us and support the gallery,” she added.

Taking a cue from nature, this season’s Pantone color picks are softer and cooler shades of the artist’s palette. We zero in on the blues that will have you feeling like you are lounging on a beach. Aquamarine, scuba blue, Lucite green and classic blue are the colors that bring serenity to a space and remind us of quiet and relaxing days outdoors.

“There could be a lot of reasons why you would use a blue. It can be a soothing color, very relaxing, it doesn’t have a lot of intensity to it. It could be the punch though, when you have white backdrops. Each one has a different mood, like an aquamarine. I think the reason people like that is because they travel and they come back and it’s a reminder of where they’ve been.” Delrae Schefter, Northern Home Furniture & Design

S A FORMER COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL ATHLETE AT NDSCS AND THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA MORRIS, JOHN NORDGAARD HAS HAD SUCCESS ON THE FIELD, COURT AND NOW THE BEACH. “OTTERTAIL LAKE CAN BE WAVY AND WINDY, SO YOU HAVE TO HAVE SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T BLOW AWAY. PUT PLASTIC CHAIRS OUT THERE … THEY’RE GONE,” HE SAID.

John Nordgaard routered and painted this rustic pop and beer cooler, adding a vintage Coca-Cola bottle opener to the side.

BACKGROUND A retired teacher and coach from Dawson, Minn., Nordgaard and his wife Eleanor have spent their summers on the west end of Ottertail Lake just down the way from Zorbaz. For the past 10 years, John Nordgaard has honed his woodworking skills, perfecting adirondack chairs and more recently, vintage water ski chairs. Spotting a ski chair in an antique store four years ago in Ottertail, Minn., John Nordgaard sat in it and decided the chair was too low and the price too high. Soon after, he went to work gathering old skis to construct his own. “It’s just a hobby. I put an ad in the paper in Dawson to get some skis just so I could make my own ski chairs. And friends of mine, former students, what have you, dropped the skis off. And so I finally made chairs,” John Nordgaard said. Endless requests from area lake-goers ensued and John Nordgaard has been constructing these beach beauties ever since. COST Depending on how many skis John Nordgaard uses, these chairs can run anywhere from $300 to $375, which is a steal compared to most other online sites selling them for up to $1,400.

“IT’S A HOBBY. IF YOU’RE RETIRED, YOU CAN’T JUST DRINK BEER AND FISH ALL DAY.”

IN THE MAKING “It’s a pretty slow process,” John Nordgaard said. “I usually work from nine o’ clock to three and it’ll take me six to seven days to do one chair. And it’s a lot of refinishing the skis. Some of them are good enough, and I like them if I don’t have to do anything. But some of them are so bad I have to sand them down and do all of it.” John Nordgaard finishes the oak and pine chairs with acrylic and a Marine Spar varnish to protect them from the elements.

Nordgaard makes everything from beer coolers, yard games, adirondack chairs, ski chairs and even "man" benches.

WANT TO SEE MORE OF NORDGAARD’S WORK? Just head to the west side of Ottertail Lake between Beach Bums and Zorbaz. Here his work is displayed all summer long, some for sale, some in progress. You won’t find a storefront for John Nordgaard, just a cabin and a sandy beach.

TO THE LAKES For those that live in the Red River Valley, not a second of summer is wasted. We swim, soak up the sun, take in the views and try to make the most of every waking moment. Here at Design & Living, we do the same. Each year we head out to the lakes area to capture gorgeous landscapes, remarkable cottage remodels and stunning lake homes. It seems for every home we tour, there’s a story that begins with family and ends with something beautiful. So, go ahead and jump in. After all, life really is better at the lake. From the shiplap walls, white-washed oak flooring, custom beams and beadboard, texture is at the forefront of this living space. With the previous owners leaving much of their furniture, the Strohs chose to keep some of the pieces like the rustic coffee table, modernizing it with classic furniture from Cisco, a sustainable furniture company in California. Lending some industrial elements to the space, they incorporated pulley and telescoping lamp fixtures from Restoration Hardware.

TO LAKE LIVING Well known for his work in commercial and residential architecture, Terry Stroh and his family have spent 18 years sailing away their summers on a 35-foot sailboat. Last Fall, Terry Stroh and his wife Mary finally decided to drop their anchor into West Battle Lake, purchasing a 100-year-old, 1,056-square-foot cabin with an interior renovation inspired by their beloved sailboat.

Creating a simple transition from the living room to the dining area is the original two-way, oak and tile fireplace the Strohs painted white. A gorgeous, reclaimed oak table from Cisco, along with industrial lighting from Restoration Hardware, create simple elegance for the space.

DESIGN&LIVING

Terry Stroh loves to cook, so when he spotted the Wolf range & Subzero fridge, it was love at first sight. The kitchen would be the only space that would not undergo a dramatic renovation. The Strohs painted the walls white and added Restoration Hardware lighting but kept the black cabinetry, granite countertops, cherrywood floors and appliances.

"We lived on a sailboat for 18 years and that was our lake place. So when we got this we decided we needed it to feel nautical." - Terry Stroh, homeowner

63

DESIGN&LIVING

Continuing with the nautical theme, Mary Stroh kept the smaller bedrooms uncluttered, adding in only minimal pops of color and pieces from local artists, Pottery Barn and Joss & Main.

DESIGN&LIVING A favorite place of Mechtel's, the screened-in porch captures the views of Long Lake from all angles.

Serving as a major focal point in the kitchen area, Hart incorporated Solaris fixtures from Crystorama, found at Valley Lights. Custom Alder cabinetry by Crystal Cabinetry of Western Products was modified to create a larger pantry, eliminating the need for excess cabinetry. The island, which seats six, features counter stools and chairs found at West Elm.

"I spent 40 plus years on the farm, then lived in a twinhome in Fargo where there were neighbors all around. This is the next best thing to being on the farm, actually better because of the water. I love the privacy and now the only thing I see out my windows are boats." - Georgie Mechtel, homeowner

71

DESIGN&LIVING

Mechtel refers to her master bedroom as the treehouse — and for a good reason. Retiring to this suite perches her among the trees with expansive lake views just a glance away. The bedding is available through Monica Hart Interior Design.

Designingwomen2 was given the opportunity to put the icing on the cake. "It's always nice to first pick out an inspiration piece that a client falls in love with. The beautiful teal, yellow and gray rug was Jill's inspiration for our design. From there, we picked out her sectional from a company that's known for its slip covers. Tim wanted a comfy, curl-up-in, piece so we gave him one with a combination of feather, poly fill and foam. They both like clean lines and lean on the contemporary side, so the style included narrow arms and a flat, shorter skirt. The covers can be removed for cleaning and switched out seasonally," said interior designer Linda Birmingham.

RETREAT As a teacher and owner of Hair Success Salons and The Salon Professionals Academy in Fargo, Jill Krahn knows a thing or two about beauty. When it came to modernizing her Fish Lake retreat, she and husband Tim took a once weathered cabin and transformed it into a chic, beachside bungalow. This transformation was a team effort from the Krahns, Linda Birmingham of designingwomen2, Howard Lomsdal and architect, Jay Pepple.

BEFORE

Jill Krahn chose a Coco granite top with a white base while architect Jay Pepple came up with the design for the kitchen. This modern approach gave the family ample space in the high traffic areas. The Krahns wanted an open ceiling, but when challenges arose, were forced to come up with an alternate solution. "We had a wall in the middle of the cabin, which was a supporting wall. So we had to put three major beams in the ceiling for support. When we put the skylight in we had a beam to deal with and Jay Pepple came up with the idea of wrapping the beam and also lighting it up," Jill Krahn said.

DESIGN&LIVING

"The challenge was to eliminate the many small spaces and develop a more open living area where the barrier between outside and inside disappears. By flipping the stairway around, Pepple was able to open up the kitchen to the family room and share the view of the lake." - Linda Birmingham, designingwomen2 87

“Jill wanted a beachy feel, so it made sense to go with the green tones and, of course, sunny yellow. We brought in the tables, lamps and art and used some things from the old cabin. We chose to use a light gray screen shade in the family room and four-inch plantation shutters in all the bedrooms. It’s a very family-friendly design.” - Linda Birmingham, designingwomen2

89

DESIGN&LIVING

Moving the fireplace so that they could open up another living area, the Krahn's garage became an entertainment hotspot with space for everyone and even an additional sleeping area. "Our family likes to play spoons and just hang out together. Plus our lake home is a place for family and friends. We have teenagers, so having that area works great," Jill Krahn said.

An architectural blend of coastal and modern craftsman, Lands End put the focus on the details and design. The original cabin remains seasonal and is now used as the guest house while the main house is year-round. Today, the cabin, which is up on stilts, is separated from the main house but they remain connected by the roof. Looking to the right, you'll see there’s a second gabled roof, the square window up in the peak is where the guest house is located.

artistry Living just minutes from beautiful Minnesota lakes, these homeowners in the city were looking for a seasonal, weekend getaway. Contacting Lands End Development to design their cottage retreat on Leech Lake, the homeowners soon fell in love with the lake life. One year later, they've skipped town, sold their home and expanded on their original idea, building their dream home alongside their coastal style cottage.

Started in November of 2011 and finished in the spring, the 18x24 guest house consists of vaulted ceilings, a main level with one bath, master bedroom and loft with two beds. The cottage's interior is a mix of stained and painted wood with white paneling and pine trim throughout. A corrugated metal roof over the entry with shake style siding complete the cottage appeal.

DESIGN&LIVING

"There’s definitely a trend to get back a little smaller. There is a lot of interest in getting that cabin feel and even that throwback design where it feels like the old cabin with the exposed rafter tails and overall smaller spaces." - Jeff Balmer, Lands End Development

DESIGN&LIVING

Framing in the view to the guest house, large windows bring the outdoors inside. A small kitchen is accented with hanging mason jar lights the homeowner made. "The homeowner was really involved with the design ... she had a great interest in design so it was kind of a tag team effort on a lot of the finishes," Balmer said.

A feature Lands End always encourages is the outdoor shower, shown here on the guest cabin. Proven to be a popular feature, homeowners are surprised at how much they use and love them.

This screened-in porch features a Marvin bifold door that stacks to one side to fully open the space to the whole house. A clear plastic panel is also installed at the top of the screens that can be pulled down during the winter to protect the furniture. A gorgeous addition to the porch is the stacked stone fireplace with steel corbels for the mantle.

ABOUT THE ARCHITECTS Fourth generation builders, brothers Matt and Jeff Balmer of Lands End Development, are based out of Crosslake, Minn., and build 20 to 25 custom homes a year with a team of 30 and two partners, Brian Engen and Jon Fogarty. They are a full service design and build firm, including general contracting services that specialize in lake homes.

DESIGN&LIVING

Mastering the details in the main house's great room, this beautiful fireplace has barn style doors that slide to reveal a TV behind. “My brother and I have a wood working background, so at our offices here we have a large wood shop that we’ve got a couple guys that now work full time on detailed projects like this mantle,” Balmer said.

For the main house's kitchen, the homeowner had brought in photos of things that inspired them. It was important for them to have the tray look on the main level to add the same type of drama and interest of vaulted ceilings. Simple, flat panel, mission style cabinetry and marble countertops were used throughout. A butcher block center island was done in walnut with an oil finish.

It may look like your typical barn and silo as you drive by, but a closer look reveals the perfect cabin getaway in a quaint 1,200-square-foot building. After purchasing the barn and property, the homeowner’s mother scattered a handful of seeds. Soon, a field of wild daisies sprouted up and they’ve continued to grow ever since.

redbarn CABIN

It’s hard to miss it if you’re taking a Sunday drive around Detroit Lake. A field of wild daisies is the precursor to a brilliant, red barn-style cabin, owned by Mike and Darla Rufer. Mike Rufer’s family bought the barn, formerly used for storing cars, in 1986 and he and his brother-in-law began fixing it up. Soon, the old barn was transformed into a quaint cabin, complete with a deck, two-car garage and even a silo that contains a spiral staircase.

DESIGN&LIVING

Positioned directly above the garage, the living area, kitchen, bedrooms and bath utilize the space without feeling cluttered. Darla Rufer has brought in several finds from antique stores and events around the area to customize the space.

The simplistic design of this cabin, which functions as a second lake place for the Rufers (their main cabin is right across the street), unlocks a step away from the busyness of everyday life and a step back into nature. The cabin backs right up to the edge of the Sucker Creek Preserve, providing the overall retreat feel of the cabin.

DESIGN&LIVING

Mike Rufer and his brother-in-law originally put sheet rock up for the interior walls when they refurbished the barn in the late 80s. However, extreme temperatures during the following winters cracked the walls, so they brought someone in to install knotty pine throughout the cabin.

“We were trying to figure out how to get from the downstairs to the upstairs without taking up a bunch of room. And we thought, ‘Well, let’s just do a walk across with the stairs.’ It adds to the barn look.” - Mike Rufer, homeowner, commenting on the silo addition

The silo add-on completes the style of this cabin. While it is certainly decorative, it serves an essential purpose, housing a spiral staircase to travel from the ground to the main level of the cabin.

To the left of the red barn cabin stands, arguably, an even more conspicuous building, not for its architecture or placement right across the street from Detroit Lake, but for it's bright pink siding, white trim and blue accents.

The pink cottage, owned by Dana and John Emery, who are neighbors of the Rufers, is the avid gardener's dream. Behind the cottage is a whimsical

expanse of flowers and plantings that the Emerys maintain throughout the spring and summer seasons. Darla Rufer said Dana Emery is something of a master gardener and Dr. John Emery is a retired physician. The pink gardening cottage, just across the road from their main place, is the perfect hobby for the Emerys. Not to mention, it's a fun sight to take in if you're driving around Detroit Lake. 111

The landscaping of this property, designed by Laura Bowles of Land Elements and installed by Lakes Area Landscaping, creates the perfect outdoor entertaining space for large gatherings, be they family reunions, celebrations or simply weekends at the lake.

LAKE LANDSCAPING

ON PELICAN Step into the outdoor oasis at this Detroit Lakes, Minn., area cabin and you’ll see firsthand the way landscaping and design can create the perfect space for relaxing and entertaining. The homeowners of this lot on Pelican Lake have a large family and wanted to be able to accommodate dozens of guests on their property. Bringing in Laura Bowles of Land Elements, a landscape architecture firm out of Fargo, the homeowners were able to create their ideal space that fits all the company they could ever have.

“There’s so much natural vegetation already that the mulch just kind of dies back into the hillside. Even where we added plants, we wanted it to look like it was still natural.” - Laura Bowles, Land Elements

113

DESIGN&LIVING

Bowles was able to incorporate elements from the house, which was built in 2012. Two columns with stacked Chilton stone frame the walkway from the driveway to the patio. That same stone was used on the cabin’s exterior. The stone also continues into the rock wall that surrounds the fire pit.

“We were trying to bring some of the architecture from the house out into the landscape. It feels like it was planned together, not like you built the house and the landscape was an afterthought.” - Laura Bowles, designer

The lake side of this property reveals a wide view of Pelican Lake that can be taken in from the deck, just off the screened-in porch of the cabin. It was important for the homeowner that the cabin and landscape were zero entry so it could be easily navigated by all family members, whether they are elderly or in a wheelchair.

DESIGN&LIVING

The property is preceded by a unique water feature at the top of the driveway. Wes Pare of Lakes Area Landscaping said it was a way of creating interest in an area that wasn’t utilized before the completion of the project.

The homeowners wanted to include all of the essentials for entertaining when they tackled the project with Wes Pare of Lakes Area Landscaping. A gas fire pit, sunken-in hot tub, countertop with built-in grill and decorative paver stones accenting the walkways and driveway are some of the features that make the space a perfect getaway for a summer weekend on the lake with friends and family.

LAKEFRONT DIGS IT’S JULY AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS ARE ON EVERYONE’S MIND. What better way to spend our few months of warm weather than with family and friends on the shore of one of our region’s thousands of lakes? Purchasing a lake place or lakeshore lot can be overwhelming and take all the fun out of your summer getaway. We met with a few realtors in the area that provide some expert advice on this special topic. Rodger Pape, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, and Ryan Mullikin and Shannon Bienek, Park Co. Realtors, gave us their thoughts on lake property.

RODGER PAPE

A competitive fisherman and lake lover, Rodger Pape has a vast knowledge of the lakes surrounding the FM area and beyond. As a lakeshore specialist with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Pape uses his expertise to help people find their lake getaways, sometimes even taking them out on the lake in his personal boat to provide a glimpse of the lake living experience.

Q&A What lakes are standing out as premier locations this season? “Everybody always wants to get to Detroit Lakes and close to Fargo. The reason they’re in such demand is just commute time. If somebody can get to the lake in 45 minutes, they want to go there versus an hour and 45 minutes. “Pelican (Lake) is probably the premium as far as asking price goes. They’re always in demand. When you’re within an hour of Fargo, everybody loves that. Heck, you could stay over on a Sunday night and get up early in the morning and come to work. You miss all the traffic and you have the sun to your back; it’s great.”

What trends have you noticed that people are looking for in lake properties?

What recommendations do you have for people searching for their perfect lake getaway?

“There are a couple trends. One of the big trends that has happened over the last five years — and it’s even happening more and more — is that elevation used to be huge. Everyone wanted to be leveled off with a sandy shore. (Now) if you have elevation and you can get down there with an ATV or something, elevation disappears. There’s another thing about elevation that people don’t realize: not only do you get this great view, but you also have privacy. People can’t look right in your cabin.

“Buy the lake first and the property second. A lot of times your budget won’t allow you to buy the perfect lake lot on Pelican. So then don’t look for the perfect house on a real sub-standard lake. Then look for a good lake. Always go for the lake first. The size of the lake depends on a lot of people; how much time you spend on the water. If you like to be on the water in a pontoon every weekend, don’t be on a lake that only has two, three miles of shoreline.

“A lot of the younger buyers don’t have the desire to have a big acreage spot. Fifteen, 20 years ago, the more acreage I had, the happier I was. Well, that generation loved working on their lake place all weekend. People’s lifestyles now are so busy; they don’t want to go to the lake and work. They’re very happy with a smaller place. The less upkeep, the better.”

“Someone once told me there’s no such thing as a bad lake place. And there really isn’t. Some lake places are better than others and some lots are better than others, but once you’re on the water and you’re looking at the water and the trees, you’re happy. There’s no such thing as a bad lake place.”

SHANNON BIENEK

RYAN MULLIKIN

This brother and sister form a team of realtors that can help folks in the FM area find their lakefront getaway. Shannon Bienek recently joined her brother, Ryan Mullikin, at Park Co. Realtors after making a career change from retail to real estate. They both bring something different to the table, sharing their experiences and expertise to help their clients find the perfect home away from home.

Q&A Can you tell us a little about how you two work together? Shannon Bienek: “They’re (clients) going to get a lot; I mean, they’re getting two realtors they’ll be able to work with. He might bring something to the table that might better serve them, I might bring something to the table. I think we both have different things to offer for our customer, different perspectives.” What’s important to know about the lakeshore real estate right now? Ryan Mullikin: “The thing is they’re

not making any more lake shore properties so it tends to hold value. I advise our clients to not make a rush decision. We want to make sure that the property meets their needs and their long-term goals.” What additional advice do you have for clients looking at lake properties? RM: “Think water. A lot of lakes now are getting annexed into the city and so they’re either going to be special assessed to have city water and sewer, but there are still a bunch of lake properties in certain areas that aren’t going to have lake water, so we always advise (people) to make sure the septic is certified and updated. You kind of have a rural setting so you want to know who’s going to be taking care of your garbage. And knowing that the

type of area you have that you’re going to be able to take care of. I always try to tell people also to get to know the property, because, whether you buy it for a second home or you look at it for a retirement investment, you want to make sure you know what’s around in the area for medical and all sorts of different services. Know what you can do with the property because there are covenants and there are bylaws and there are restrictions on property. That’s why it’s good to have a realtor who knows the area so they can help assist you.”

TABLESCAPES By Maria Bosak | Photos By J. Alan Paul Photography

I

grew up in a paper plate, picnic table and hot dog home. That was the extent of outdoor entertaining in my family. Still, today, my friends will tell you that dinner at my house is simple. A stack of plates, a pile of forks, grab your grub and find a place to sit. Now there is nothing wrong with any of this. Life is busy and we surely don’t need to worry about fancy table settings or fine china. But what if we embraced the time we had with one another and just incorporated a few things to enhance and enjoy our time together? I remember hearing the word “tablescape” for the first time. I truthfully didn’t completely understand it. Oh, I grasped the concept and knew what it meant, but it didn’t fit me. We grew up in a home where dinner (or supper as we called it in South Dakota) was for survival. We were busy, exhausted at times from all the farm work, and eating was truly just a means of nutritional energy. I remember my mom having a wedding set of china that resided in the highest cabinets in our kitchen. But I can count on one hand the number of times it made an appearance. No, I take that back. I remember it, but I don’t remember ever using it. It has only been recently that I have taken a different look at dining. I heard Dave Ramsey once say, “Something magical happens when you break bread with others.” I agree. One of my favorite days of the week is Monday nights when I join my friend Audra and her family

for dinner. I’ve always admired her for the way she takes care of her family. She always cooks a nice meal and they actually sit together at the table and eat. They say grace, sometimes twice, the second time so their 4-year-old Aiden can say his version, which is totally adorable and glorious. I’ve been doing this for years and recently decided to step up my game when eating dinner at home with my husband, Tate, or with friends. I realize a nice tablescape isn’t about being fancy, sophisticated or rich. My friends will tell you I’m none of these. It is about celebrating those sitting around your table, shutting off your phones and connecting with what matters most. People. Lately, Tate and I have been eating at the table, facing each other and talking, instead of sitting in separate chairs in the living room while watching TV. Now some of this might be because we’ve moved into a different house and we are

DESIGN&LIVING DIY

“SETTING THE TABLE SHOULD BE ABOUT CONNECTING WITH AND LOVING ON THOSE YOU CARE ABOUT. LET’S FIND WAYS TO BRING ELEGANCE AND EMPHASIS TO THE EVERYDAY AND MAKE DINNER COUNT.”

out of our old routine. Or, it might be that we are taking on the spirit of the lovely couple whom we bought our house from. Whatever reason it is happening, I’m just glad it is. I’m going to embrace it and find ways to make it special without worrying about making it picture perfect, expensive or fancy. So when Tracy Nicholson from Design and Living Magazine gave me the assignment for this issue, I jumped at the chance to create a tablescape for an evening with friends that is simple and elegant and very achievable for anyone just by taking a few extra moments and using items you already have or can find inexpensively. I hope you enjoy the photos and maybe find a way or two you can create a simple tablescape for dinner with your sweetie or friends.

FLOWERS I inherited my grandmother’s love of flowers. I think fresh cut flowers are one of the simplest ways to add elegance and charm to any table. Peonies are one of my favorites. These were cut from my garden before dinner. I used recycled old jars as vases. I sometimes buy wine simply because of the beauty of the bottle. That way I can reuse it when it is empty. PLACEMATS & TABLE RUNNERS Placemats are necessary if you have a nice table and want to protect it, but they also give subtle texture to the table and define the space. These particular tables were too narrow to hold traditional-sized placemats, so I used Hungarian grain sacks as runner and placemats all in one. CANDLES Maybe it’s just me, but simply lighting a candle makes me feel fancy. While putting candles on the dining table is nothing new and earth shattering, we often forget how much atmosphere they add to a dinner. In this case I found some citronella candles with dark pink votives that matched the peonies from my yard. It tied the table together with color. BOOKS I love to read. But recently I’ve begun to look at books for a completely different purpose. They make great décor pieces. I buy old books at thrift stores based on the fun titles, color and texture. There are many ways you can incorporate them into your décor. Using them as risers, or just as a pop of a color on a shelf are just two fun ways to incorporate books.

CAFÉ LIGHTS & CHANDELIER I know. You are busy and you are not going to have time to string a chandelier in a tree in between work, kids, laundry and life. I’m not saying this is a normal night at my house, I just thought it was fun to try something new and think out of the box. But you must admit, the café lights and chandelier feel fancy and add charm to the event. I think this look would be great for an outdoor rehearsal dinner. SETTING We recently moved to a new home in the country and one of the reasons we purchased the home is the gorgeous setting. Take advantage of the beauty of nature, get outside and soak it in. Now, on this particular evening we were attacked by mosquitoes. They had their own agenda and it didn’t involve us soaking in nature. So, sometimes outside isn’t an option. I would love to hear what you do to connect with friends and family during meal time or special occasions. I hope you found a few tidbits you can use during your next tablescape experience.
