FROMTHEEDITOR

HELLO Hello, my name is Brady Drake. I'm a lifelong resident of the Fargo-Moorhead area and am very excited to start helping with this magazine. Over the past two years, I have been working mostly on our sister magazine Fargo INC! And while I will continue to do so, I've been given the opportunity to expand my creative horizons a bit. And what an opportunity it is! I love our community and the chance to highlight the great things going on here through this publication is going to be so much fun.

those activities are replaced by trips to the rink to play some hockey. But, the parks still offer a great opportunity to get activate and strengthen connections with others. Whatever your outdoor fix is, we hope this magazine can be a resource to introduce you to a new thing or two in the area.

Brady Drake Editorial Team Lead

In this particular issue, we take a look at some of the great things the parks have to offer in our area. I don't remember my first trip to the park, but I'm sure I loved it. What I do remember was a childhood full of swinging on the swingset, avoiding the "lava" on the ground and making a TON of friends. As I've grown, my activities at the park have changed a bit. In the summer spring and fall, I love walking the trails, playing disc golf and having cookouts with friends. In the winter,

This month's issue of Fargo INC!, like always, provided our team with the opportunity to work with a bunch of great entrepreneurs in the area, including Bethan Berkeley and Katie Munion, the Co-Owners of Dale Carnegie Training of ND and Northwest MN. Through our interviews with Berkeley and Munion, we learned just how the Dale Carnegie brand continues to thrive and what there team is able to bring to the business community to drive results. Read the issue to learn about that and so much more!

The Cultivate Conference, hosted by Grand Farm, is set to take place on July 15 and is an important event for agriculture in our area. As we look to feed a growing population, collaboration becomes ever more important. We must continue to push innovation between tech and agriculture. This conference will do just that by featuring topics such as software applications, precision agriculture drones, alternative farming methods and more. This year's event features a number of impressive speakers and groundbreaking innovations. Attendees will be treated to short talks, breakout sessions and a farmer's panel focusing on emerging technologies in agriculture. As a magazine, we want to provide a sneak peek for those that cannot attend as well as supplementary information for those who will be at the conference. Coming Soon!

MEET THE

Crafty Ninja T

his month for summer we’re hanging with April Iverson of Crafty Ninja! Her wraps are the go-to summer accessory for lake days and backyard patio hangs…

Tell us a bit about yourself: My name is April, and I live in Fargo with my husband, Josh, and three pups, Ninja, Buster, and Luna. My husband and I are both elementary teachers. He teaches 4th grade, and I am an elementary physical education teacher. We are very fortunate to have our summers off together, and we try to pack in as much fun as possible. In the summer we enjoy hiking, camping, going to the lake, wake surfing, eating meals out on our deck, and having fire pits in our backyard. We try to be outside as often as possible. Our favorite indoor activities include playing board games with friends, date night movies and eating out, and binge watching a good show. Describe what you create under Crafty Ninja?

By Ashley Morken, Unglued Photos Provided By Crafty Ninja

40 | JULY 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

I love to sew and create a variety of things. Crafty Ninja focuses mainly on kimono wraps, and with these it is a lot of fun to work with a variety of fabrics. I make some wraps that are warmer for fall and winter, and some that are lightweight and sheer for summer. Recently, I have started using my scraps to make scrunchies! I have a very hard time getting rid of, or throwing away scrap fabric, so this was the perfect

opportunity to use some up. I have also really enjoyed getting back into making zipper pouches and tote bags. I am a little bit of a bag addict, and it really sparks my creativity when I get to think about all the possibilities within making one little pouch. Tell us where your name came from? My husband and I will be celebrating our 14th anniversary this July. Shortly after we got married, we got an adorable puppy and named her Ninja. As I was developing my business, I threw around a lot of names, and that was one that stuck. I love that I named it after her. She is still spunky as ever and we love her so much. What's your most popular product or pattern currently that you sell? Crafty Ninja is primarily known for kimono wraps. I created the pattern myself after not being satisfied with what I was finding in stores. Many of the wraps I found were of low quality, would not stay on and fall off your shoulders. Also, being short, most of the things I found were way too long for me. So I went to work and created my own kimono wrap.

It has been really fun developing and improving the pattern as Crafty Ninja has grown. What is your favorite thing about having your own business? My favorite part of owning my own business is being welcomed into a community of makers, artists, entrepreneurs and small business owners. The support network in the FM area is unreal. The relationships I have made with fellow entrepreneurs is nothing I ever expected. The way this community shares information, looks out for each other, and reaches out to support one another, is next level. Also, the local community always shows up and gets excited to support their local makers. It is a wonderful thing to be a part of. What is the most challenging thing? The most challenging thing is balancing time. I always think how great it would be if I could be in three places at once or have 10 sets of hands. It is a challenge to make sure you are putting in time with friends, family, a full-time job, and a small business. But, again, I have an amazing support system, which helps me do what I do!

popular. Instagram and Pinterest are great visual search tools to get me inspired. A lot of times ideas just come to me, and I have to try it out. Also you began a new group this past year called Maker's Membership - tell us most about it! During the pandemic, I started putting together Virtual Craft Markets. All of the vendors would be invited to a zoom meeting before the event. Once everyone got in a room, the camaraderie, sharing, and support was palpable. I absolutely loved the mix of makers and artists that would come together and just learn from each other. My friend Heidi and I wanted to continue this support system, and Makers Membership was born. Heidi and I bonded over our shared love of community and helping other entrepreneurs grow and thrive in their businesses. As entrepreneurs ourselves, we know how hard it is to run your own company. You are a one-person show, doing all the things needed to run your business - ie. creating the products, taking the photos, running your marketing campaigns, fixing tech issues, fulfilling orders, and all the bazillion other tiny details that need to get done on the daily.

Where do you get inspiration from? I am a very visual person and get inspired in a lot of ways. I love seeing people out and about and observing what outfits they put together, or what color palettes are

We get it. And it is hard to do it all by yourself. That’s why we created the Makers Membership. In a nutshell, Makers Membership is a subscription membership

group that gives you a community of fellow makers, resources on running a productbased business, and guest speakers in monthly virtual meetings so you can create movement in your maker business, even if you’re just getting started (or haven’t started your business yet). Heidi and I are working hard to launch to the public this fall. We are SO excited! What advice would you have given yourself 10 years ago? Work smarter not harder. Streamline as many things as possible. Get your finances and tracking in order right from the start. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Don’t be afraid to say both “yes” and “no.” Talk to people who have done it before. Reach out and form relationships with people who are willing to mentor you. Find people who are in your shoes and lean on each other. Once you’re in a place where you can, give back in the same way others have helped you. Where can people find your work? I am most frequently posting about my work and life on Instagram or Facebook, @craftyninja.co . You can also shop Crafty Ninja at www.craftyninja.co . I will also be at the Island Park Craft show, August 28th and 29th. How can we keep in touch? Instagram and Facebook: @craftyninja.co www.craftyninja.co

OVERCOMING

Adversity and Leading by Example Shalom Alekhem! I hope this article finds you enjoying Summer activities with your beloved ones! I am truly excited to introduce you a person I look up to and who is making a lasting impact in many lives in the community: Sir Jered Pigeon is the Director for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and serves as the Campus Diversity Officer for Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM). He is also a MinnState system diversity officer leader across the state. In his roles, he serves in a collaborative advisory capacity to the campus administration, students, employees and the community at large. In addition, he leads staff that provide programming and services to students out of the American Indian Center, the Intercultural Center, the Rainbow Dragon Center and the Women’s Center. Mr. Pigeon was born in Grand Forks, ND but has moved 42 | JULY 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

around the nation before coming to the Red River valley. He is first and foremost a family man of faith that centers his actions on his loved ones and those around him. With his life partner Tina, they live in Dilworth (MN) and impact the lives of their six children (ages 24-14) through intentional role modeling and parenting with love. Mr. Pigeon is an active member of our community, as a local member of the Dilworth Lions and the Moorhead American Legion as a member of the Sons of the Legion. He is a pillar in the Black Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) community and is considered one of our region's trusted DEI experts. His life experience being a biracial male has afforded him life experiences that prepare him for leading work in this arena. Mr Pigeon’s educational path was non-traditional to say the least. He stopped high school after grade 9, returned and achieved a GED, then earned an Associate of Arts at Northland Community and

Technical College. After completing his AA degree he enrolled at MSUM and received a Bachelor of Arts, double majoring in Criminal Justice and Sociology. This propelled him to earn his Master’s Degree in Counseling and Higher Education in 2011 and is on track to complete a Doctorate of Education in spring 2025. One of his life mantras: Education is an equalizer and once you get your degree, no one can take it away from you! Next time you see him make sure to ask him why he loves the Red River valley! Cheers! - Cyusa Where do you call home? I call home the Red River Valley. I have lived in Dilworth, MN, since 2010. My life journey starts with birth in Grand Forks. My mother is from this region and my father was stationed at the Grand Forks Air Force Base when they met. At the age of three, my mom relocated with my step-father to Winchester, Tennessee, home of the beautiful Sawnee Mountains. This is where I was raised up to sixth grade. After grade six we moved to Finley, ND and then Argyle, MN, where my grandmother lived. Both were small

cities, not more than 500 people and I was one of only a couple African American students in the schools. Following that, we relocated to Fergus Falls, MN and then Dilworth. What has been your journey growth and what lessons have learned before coming to Fargo? Identifying as an African American Male has afforded me many unique experiences in my life. One major lesson I learned from my step-father is that education is an equalizer and once you earn your degree no one can take it away from you. My mother taught me how to cook, how to clean and how to care for others. Another life lesson that I learned as a result of being raised primarily by a single mother is the role of fatherhood in a child’s life and what the lack of that can do to a child. The third life lesson that I learned is that the world is full of many different people that have various beliefs and you will have to interact with all people, it’s a small world. This was tremendously important at the times when I was the only person of color or one of a few in a specific region. This leads me to the fourth lesson which is that you can be what you aspire to be and you become what you think. Do not let others define you or shine your light!

How did you develop such a passion for the youth and how did you land in Academia? My educational path was non-traditional to say the least. I dropped out of high school after the 9th grade, returned and achieved a GED, then earned an Associate of Arts at Northland Community and Technical College. After completed my AA degree, I enrolled at MSUM and received a Bachelor of Arts, double majoring in Criminal Justice and Sociology. This propelled me to earn my Master’s Degree in Counseling and Higher Education in 2011 and I am on track to complete a Doctorate of Education in spring 2025. Go Dragons!! What are your favorite activities in Fargo during each season? Fall brings the change of weather and the ramping up of school. This is the time that we gather as a family and go over the school supply list and begin our adventure hunt. Literally, as most of the supplies are selling out quickly. This is also my birthday month, so I enjoy the celebration over a large cookout annually. Winter brings the time to get out there and immerse yourself in the heart of winter, the snow and the low temperatures. I love the seasons the region brings and embracing winter is a part of life in the Red River Valley. 43

THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL

This is the time when we get the sleds out to go down the snow hills. Living in Dilworth comes with having a community skating rink and as a result during the winter we skate and play hockey for fun. Spring brings the melting of the snow and grass starting to show. During spring, we embrace the idea of spring cleanup and look forward to starting the seasons fresh. Spring, for me, means new life or the rebirth of life and seeing the snow melt is reassuring that summer is right around the corner. Summer: Schools out for summer! This is the phrase that my children love to say. To them, they have their time that they get to reclaim. Summer is the months that we try to visit our extended family and take some time to get away. Having family in Florida, Nevada, and California makes it ideal to go. Another fun family tradition in summer that we do is to travel to county fairs as the carnivals come to town. Why should the Tri-College system and the Fargo-Moorhead area at large care for its youth? What is the role of the youth in shaping the valley’s culture? I am reminded of the African proverb that states, “it takes a village to raise a child,” and this rings so true as to why our colleges need to invest in our youth. The youth are our future and need specific attention and investments. Education is the 44 | JULY 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

pillar of success for our youth and by instilling a strong appetite for learning, we can increase their overall life. We are only as good as the children we are raising. Stronger partnerships with K-12 is needed to create a vision for students that may be the first in their family to attend higher education. What are Clichés and misconceptions on the Millennials and Gen Z? How do you debunk them? Some of the misconceptions of Millennials and Gen Z are that they feel entitled, or that they are not loyal or that they avoid personal communication. These are grounded in a lack of knowledge and a deficit mindset. The same way that race and gender was and is used to create false narratives is exactly what these misconceptions are doing. In addition, they restrict people to access. The other thing is that we can’t paint people with broad brushes and lump all people into boxes. Life is unique, everyone deserves a fair shake and opportunity to receive grace. Can you share some of the work you do to help build the personal brand of the youth in the area? Recently, a local group of community leaders came together with the Science Museum of Minnesota and one of the topics was on building a personal brand. During this session we defined what a personal brand is and why

it is important to have a strategy behind your brand. As we further went into the presentation, the community youth appreciated the fact that they can influence their narrative, or at least inform people’s opinions with facts. The group was comprised of community youth from diverse backgrounds. They reported that many people defined them by a statics or categorized them, often with negative undertones. Upon completing the training, participants were able to walk away with practical strategies on successful social media usage, leading with a purpose and developing life plan of action that adapts as they grow.

7 Ways To Boost Your Summer Workouts

BY Dr. Karla Wolford PHOTO BY Kayleigh Omang

46 | JULY 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

1. Get it done early.

2. HYDRATE!

No excuses. Set that alarm and just go. You will have more energy throughout the day. There is a lot more going on or fun functions that just pop up in the summertime so if you save your workout for later you have a higher chance of skipping it. Big bonus, it is much cooler in the early morning. If you do find you are exercising during the hottest part of the day, you might want to decrease the duration of your workout or the intensity, or make it an interval type workout so your body can cool and recover. Also, activities such as biking or swimming during the hotter parts of the day would be a better choice than running for the simple fact that cooling your body is easier during biking and swimming.

Ditch the summer alcoholic beverages for a blue dolphin - aka a water on the rocks. Up to 60% of the human body is made up of water. If you don’t give it the hydration it deserves, you will run low and not be able to regulate your temperature when it’s hot (or cold) outside. Studies show that your body will sacrifice muscle function in order to regulate temperature, so thinking you can “tough it out” and work through thirst during a workout is not only potentially dangerous, it can actually undermine your fitness goals. Staying hydrated will help prevent symptoms such as dizziness, stomach cramps, and headaches which will cause you to stop exercising altogether. Water is not the only consideration, though. You also need to refuel with salts and electrolytes, try and skip the electrolyte drinks with lots of sugars.

Since then, she has become a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP®), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), obtained her International Chiropractic Sports Science Diploma (ICSSD), Chiropractic Acupuncture certificate, Level 1&2 CrossFit trainer Certification and she is a Level 2 USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach.

6. Challenge a friend or family to do an “active activity” once a week.

3. Grab a friend and find something to train for. People are motivated in a variety of different ways but the main two categories are intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is the act of doing something without any obvious external rewards. You do it because it's enjoyable and interesting, rather than because of an outside incentive or pressure to do it, such as a reward or deadline. Extrinsic motivation is reward driven behavior where external factors drive it. Intrinsic is harder for most people… so grab an extrinsic motivator (such as an event to train for) to get in the groove! Then let your intrinsic take over!

4. Hire a coach. Simply put, coaches move the needle. If you want to see results, work with someone who does it for a living and can show you the results from their clients time and time again. Coaches can also help prevent injuries by showing you proper technique. Workout smarter not harder.

5. Sleep Don’t skimp on the sleep and recovery. Even though it is light out pretty late in the summer, missing that extra hour of sleep will really catch up with you... not to mention destroy your workouts. Keep your thermostat between 65-68F when you sleep. That will lead to a more comfortable sleep. Avoid those crappy food and drinks close to bedtime. The caffeine should stop around noon to ensure you have the best night's sleep!

Product Recommendation Try using some essential oils of peppermint or eucalyptus and put a drop or two at the base of your neck and temples before you start exercising. Those oils are meant for cooling.

Yes, grabbing happy hour is fun and so is lounging around and watching Netflix, but take advantage of the summer and take advantage of some activities in the great outdoors. You’re more likely to stick at something that is mentally stimulating, scenic, or fun. The Fargo-Moorhead area has some awesome bike trails, hiking paths, outdoor volleyball, softball, kickball leagues, disc golf and kayaking. Next time you golf, skip the cart and walk. Find an outdoor pool to grab a swim workout or test your core strength at the batting cages or tennis or pickleball courts. If you are down for a more mellow adventure there are plenty of opportunities for yoga. You could even come join in for buddy day at EHP Performance, you can train outdoors in the summer if you want!

7. Get your priorities in order. If exercising is something that you prioritize and you want in life, you will make time for it. Try replacing the “I can’t"s with the “I won’t”s. For example, you may say ,“I can’t get up early to workout,” but replace that sentence with, “I won’t get myself up early enough to workout and prioritize my health." Those two statements sure do sound different! When motivation runs out, discipline is there to save the day. Sometimes you just have to grind and get it in. Simple as that. You either do or you don’t. Oftentimes it might not be the workout you are imagining but something is better than nothing.

ith over 17 years of restaurant experience, I know food pretty well at this point. Located in the heart of downtown Fargo, Chef’s Table Catering, in the Sanctuary building, offers everything from grazing tables to formal plated dinners for any size event. I’m passionate about the culinary world and find joy in sharing my creations with others. I’m excited to be taking on some bigger things and stepping up my game. With the anticipated opening of The Armory event center in Moorhead (904 Center Avenue) fall of 2021, I will be helping curate and execute The Armory event center catering menu, for all of your event needs. Featured today, one of my favorite appetizers! We would like to introduce those both unfamiliar and accustomed to the Samosa. Available through Chef’s Table and will be on the new catering menu for The Armory Event center this fall. Originating in South Asia/India, the samosa has stood the test of time. Wrapper

You can use a phyllo dough or a puff pastry. Both work well and can be found in most grocery stores.

FILLING

• 1 cup olive oil • 2 lb idaho potato (cleaned, peeled, in large dice) • 1 lb vegan beef substitute (I like to use IMPOSSIBLE) • 2 medium red onion, diced • 3 clove garlic minced • 1 jalapeño • 2 bell pepper cleaned and diced • 1/2 tbs salt • 1 teaspoon pepper • 1 teaspoon ground coriander • 1 teaspoon cumin • 1 tsp paprika • 4 scallions chopped • 1 cup frozen peas, defrosted • 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro chopped

Preparation

Fill a small pot with 2 qt of water and bring to a boil. Add the potatoes and cook for 3-5 min, or until done. Remove potatoes from the pot and place on a sheet tray.

In a large pan over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil. Once hot, add the onions. Cook the onions until translucent, then add the peppers. Saute for 3-4 min. Now add cumin, garlic, coriander, pepper, and paprika. Bloom for 30 sec then add the potatoes and impossible beef. Use a spatula to break apart the meat. Cook for 3-4 min or until the meat has browned. Taste filling and adjust salt as needed. Add the peas and cilantro, then cook for another 1 minute. Remove the meat filling from the heat and let cool. Heat an oven to 400 Degrees. Cut one of the pastry dough into circles using a biscuit cutter. Take one pastry circle and brush with water cornstarch mixture. Put 2T of filling in the center and fold in half. Use a fork to make ridges and help seal the pastry into a half moon. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling. Place the Samosas on sheet trays, and bake for 12 min. Garnish with cilantro, and serve with sweet chili. ENJOY! Or, better yet, come have one with a glass of rosé on our patio all summer long!
