MUSIC IS IN THE AIR W
hat a treat it was to put this issue together! While searching for local artists to include in this magazine, I was exposed to a vast array of fantastic local musicians that I had never heard of... But I should have.
I'm extremely amazed at the amount of undiscovered talent there is right in our region. From DJs to producers to rockers to rappers to those singing the country blues, there is a lot of musical talent that is living right next door. Now, make no mistake about it, I am the furthest thing from a music aficionado. Anyone who had to listen my screeching attempts to play Hot Cross Buns on the recorder in elementary school can attest to that. Therefore, I would never try to create a best of issue in regards to local musicians. This magazine is not that. The artists featured here are simply ones
that I thought had a good sound and deserved more recognition (there were plenty of others that fell into this category as well, but we only have so many pages to work with). A larger request I have is to please support your local musicians. It takes serious guts to perform for strangers like they do.

In this issue, we introduce you to one of the best kept secrets in our business community.
October is here–and with it so many nostalgic aromas of harvest and spice filling the air. From new kitchen spaces to cozy coffee nooks, to preparing your home for the fall season, this issue is all about what makes the home such a special place during the autumn season.
This is an extremely exciting time for NDSU basketball. Last season marked the first time since 2008-2009 that both the men's and women put together a winning record. Both squads are returning the majority of their rosters from last season's successful campaigns, meaning expectations at the SHAC are sky high for 2021.

It is said a lot, but the arts are so important in our community. They add a level of vibrancy and identity for everyone living in the Fargo-Moorhead area and our local musicians play a huge part in that. In fact, there are so many talented musicians in the area that we couldn't possibly create a "best of list". Instead, we decided to highlight a handful of artists in the following pages that you should know. Each one puts out original music on streaming platforms and would love the support of their home city. 17

Jake Ingamar is a talented local singer and songwriter. For now, Jake is living out of a 1963 Greyhound bus with his studio all intact. He hopes to release some new stuff he has been working on in there throughout the fall/winter. How did you originally get into music? My dad took me to go see The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen at the Fargodome in 1999 when I was 5 and 6 years old and that had a pretty big impact on me. It wasn't until I was 13 that I picked up guitar and started taking that seriously. I started to play drums and writing/recording my own song ideas when I was 16. And then I started playing the pedal steel guitar when I was about 18. How would you describe your sound? To name a specific genre for myself is a bit difficult but I’d probably categorize myself as a sort of indie singer-songwriter/indie
rock sound with a mix of folk and alt-country. Otherwise, I'd say I'm pretty much just a blend of all my biggest influences–The Beatles, Bruce Springsteing, Led Zeppelin, Elliott Smith, Gram Parsons, Townes Van Zandt and Brian Wilson. Where can people find your music? Older releases can be heard on Spotify, Bandcamp, iTunes etc. For up-to-date newer stuff, I've been posting little snippets of song ideas I've been working on up on Instagram and Facebook. I’ll bump it to my reel-toreel tape recorder and make a little video of it.
Dearly Departed is a local band of five individuals, each hailing from a small town in Minnesota. The band plays a variety of active rock that spans from catchy radio tunes to heavyhitting metalcore.

When did your group form? How did you come together?
It's been something we've each been exposed to so much our whole lives, from hitting pots and pans to seeing massive live concert videos on YouTube, the inspiration started right away when we were kids.
Jesse and Deven had always jammed together since they were kids. Once they met Jordan and Hunter through mutual friends and seeing the vast amount of big rock shows coming through the area, the idea of forming a band came together and we first went public in January of 2018.

With our album 'Moving Slightly' we are proud of the eclectic sound that is created between all of our separate influences, inspirations and ideas."
How did you originally get into music? We all discovered various artists that inspired us to play music with our friends! Some examples of bands we all grew up on are: Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, Blink 182, Joy Division, The Cure and Nirvana. When did your group form? How did you come together? Winter 2018. Nashat Khan or "ShottytheBeam" didn't start making music until quarantine, but that doesn't mean he's not taking it seriously. The recent Davies High graduate and current Bismarck State student edits his own videos and makes his own beats all while crafting his rapping and singing style. funk, indie and alt-rock all found in his sound. "I would describe my sound like a smoothie. I take my favorite things that sound good individually and put them all together to make something that sounds even better. I take inspiration from everything from classical to folk to RnB to hip hop to even rock."
In June of 2021 I dropped an album called "THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES... sometimes" Its a project about the inconsistency of my mind, and how indecisive I can be. I would say the record is an Indie/RnB/Rap Album. This album was produced by me with help from Keylime Beats. It features people such as Shravya Kamaraju, Fil Ricchiardi and Fargo's own Horizon. Alongside this album I dropped multiple music videos that go along with the music, there is even a storyline within them."
Where can people find your music?
What else should we know about you?
Listen to me on all major streaming platforms and YouTube.
I have 3 main goals right now. First, I want to inspire people that look like me to follow their dreams, using a movement called "BRWN XCLLNC" where I want to eventually help curate and prop up South Asian hip hop artists. Second, I want to retire my parents by the time I graduate college. Finally, I want to put Fargo on the map, it seems like everyone wants to leave but I have pride in living in Fargo, so let's show the world what we can do!
How did you get into making music? I used a lot of YouTube tutorials and books to learn because I didn't really have a music background when I started making music during quarantine. I had time to kill and I was bored so I wanted to give it a try. I ended up making music I was proud of right away and ever since I've been hooked. I see music as a way of disciplining myself just as much as I use it to relax and go into a different world.

Dakotah Poitra (stage name Dakotah Faye) is a 27-year-old rapper from Minot, ND. During his now 15 year career, he has released solo records
How did you originally get into music? I wrote poetry from a very young age. My mother got me into rap music because she loved all types of music. I always gravitated towards rappers watching them on tv. I wanted to have the same acceptance and status they did. When I was around 12 years old my best friend Eddie Mack got me to rap on a song he had made. I never looked back. When did your group form? How did you come together? Like I said my best friend Eddie Mack (E.Mack) started our crew Money Stackz back

in 2008 as children. It's what we thought hip hop was at the time. Success, money, fame, etc. The meaning has changed a lot over the years because, to us now, it means dreams, failure, success and most importantly family. In 2013 our friend Rhetty joined and he gave us an identity and the knowledge to start doing shows and taking it more seriously. Then in 2016, CALi joined and completed the circle.
Now that I’m older, I’ve developed my own sound. I love to layer my vocals, rap or singing, to give the sound a lot of depth and wave. I like to pride myself on using a ton of different sounds because I don’t want to be in one box.
How would you describe your sound?
What else should we know about you?
I definitely started when I was young a huge fan of Drake. So I tried to have a somewhat classic hip hop sound along with the new dip into r&b.
I care. I care about music and I care about all of you. Stay blessed and focus.

What is your favorite way to listen to music? Spotify
What are your 3 favorite songs right now? 1. Sitting on the Dock of the Bay by Ottis Redding - It is my go-to happy song. 2. Let's Stay Together by Al Green - His voice is smooth like butter and I love the 70's vibe along with the lyrics. 3. We are the World - It is a great reminder especially during these times we need to take care of each other to make things better for the younger generation plus the amount of talent on that track is unreal.
What are your 3 favorite albums of all time? 1. The Bodyguard Soundtrack - Whitney kills it in this album and I love singing the songs in my car (when I am by myself of course). 2. The Rent Soundtrack - I am a musical nerd, I love the meaning of acceptance of coming together no matter who you are and what your background is. 3. 21 by Adele - This album was my go-to during a tough time and her voice is ridiculous.
When is your favorite time to listen to music? When I clean or am working on a big project.

When is your favorite time to listen to music? One of my favorite times to listen to music is on weekend mornings with a nice hot cup of coffee.
What are your 3 favorite albums of all time? What are your 3 favorite songs right now? In no particular order, some of my favorites are: 1. HOLIDAY by Turnstile Honestly, just a banger. 2. Happiness in Self Destruction by The Plot In You - An incredibly honest and heartfelt reflection of the artist's adolescence painted in a bitter-sweet light. I think there is a lot most people can relate to at least a little bit in the lyrical content of the song, coxing the listener to look back on some of their own less than commendable actions, that maybe they couldn't help but enjoy. 3. Parasite Eve by Bring Me The Horizon - Lots of cool production on the vocals and instrumental. Things break away a little from a standard song structure, but doesn't stray too far to where it would hinder the flow or momentum of the song.
34 | OCTOBER 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM
No particular order again. 1. Feel Something by Movements - One of the most emotional and sonically cohesive albums I've probably ever heard. Every track feels like it belongs without them blending together or getting boring. Especially for a band's first album, the level of polish on the songwriting is just incredible. 2. What You Don't See by The Story So Far - Super nostalgic album for me that still holds up with zero skips after nearly a decade. 3. Stoney by Post Malone - A lot of the tracks on this album bring me right back to having good times with good company while blasting it on repeat.
What is your favorite way to listen to music? I love listing to music through a good quality pair of headphones or speakers with the volume cranked to get the most detail possible out of each song.
*Al likes to sing around the office What is your favorite way to listen to music? Apple Music
What are your 3 favorite songs right now? 1. Tattoos by Tyler Childers his lyrics hit. 2. Anything by Luke Combs dude is a badass. 3. I'm Not for Everyone by Brothers Osborne
What are your 3 favorite albums of all time? 1. Purgatory by Tyler Childers - His lyrics are all unreal, this guy chills me out for sure.
When is your favorite time to listen to music? Whenever I am in the car.
2. What you See Ain't Always What You Get by Luke Combs. - Every song by him is awesome and I am a huge country guy. 3. Dangerous: The Double Album by Morgan Wallen.

What are your 3 favorite albums of all time? 1. Brand New Man by Brooks & Dunn - This was one of the first Cassette Tapes (yes I am old) I ever bought. I grew up on a farm and my dad constantly had either Ag Radio on or Country, so Country has been my favorite since and I have always liked Brooks & Dunn. 2. No Fences by Garth Brooks - Same as Brooks & Dunn except my Dad had the CD for this Album so I listened to it plenty at home. Eventually hit Record and Play at the same time to record it myself on a Cassette Tape (again...old). 3. Thriller by Michael Jackson - My Dad had this as a CD so I listened to it growing up. Needless to say, it may be on Millions of people's "best albums of all time" lists. Bonus 4. Back in Black by AC/DC - It's a Classic. I love sports and basically listened to AC/DC my entire childhood and still do today. I can listen to this album and once I am done believe I can run a marathon... then I try and remember I still can't... but it pumped me up at least!
36 | OCTOBER 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM
What are your 3 favorite songs right now? 1. The Way You Make Me Feel by Michael Jackson - I am not sure if this is "right now" but it is one of my favorite songs of all time. Whenever I hear it, I like to think I can sing and dance like Michael Jackson... basically it allows me to forget about life for about five minutes. 2. Hell of a View by Eric Church - It reminds me that no matter who people think you are, you are as good of a person as you want to be, regardless of what people think. Live life like you have nothing to lose, and if you can, find someone to be by your side through life!! 3. You Shook Me All Night Long by ACDC - This is my go to song when I am looking to get motivated and pumped up. Always has been as long as I can remember
When is your favorite time to listen to music? All Day
What is your favorite way to listen to music? In my car while out on photography adventures. It's hard to beat a summer night during golden hour with the windows down blasting your favorite songs.
What are your 3 favorite songs right now? 1. Never Love You Again by Cheat Codes (with Little Big Town & Bryn Christopher) - I love the energy it has, the layered vocals, and the songwriting is brilliant. As a producer who loves EDM, this song has everything you could ever want in a song. 2. By You Side (Feat. Tom Grennan) [Acoustic] by Calvin Harris - I've been a big CH fan since "Feel So Close" came out 10 years ago in 2011, and this song reminds me of the classic Calvin Harris from the 2010s. I love the guitar rhythmic vibe, and Tom's vocals give me chills. 3. Not Dead Yet by Lord Huron - Lord Huron is my favorite band, especially for all of my favorite outdoor photography adventures, and the Beach-Boys-meet-ElvisPresley vibes of this song has me putting it on repeat again and again.
When is your favorite time to listen to music? When I am feeling creative, especially late at night while editing photos, or designing. I also grew up listening to music while my family and I would cook meals together. I have a lot of really special memories attached to listening to music with family.
What are your 3 favorite albums of all time and why? 1. Strange Trails by Lord Huron - Wow–this album is an ethereal experience. It's like stepping into a portal, filled with ghosts, pine trees, love and heartbreak. One of the songs, "Frozen Pines" inspired the name for my photography name. I can't say enough about this album, it always fills me with adventure and wonder. Leader and songwriter Ben Schneider writes and creates fictional storylines, characters and a whole world in each album and every other album by Lord Huron ties characters and worlds together. It blows me away. 2. Stories by Avicii - Avicii (Tim Bergling) was a huge inspiration to me, and is one of the main reasons I pursued EDM in the first place. All singles, EP's, and albums are phenomenal, but Stories has one of my favorites, "The Days". Avicii never fails to inspire my creativity and put me in a good mood. 3. We Are Young & Free (Live) by Hillsong Young & Free - This was Hillsong Y&F's debut album, and many of the songs were played at church youth events and camps when I was in high school, and I have so many amazing memories attached to the songs on this album–from making lifelong friends, to playing with the worship team at church. Eight years later and so many timeless classics come from that album that I still enjoy today.

What is your favorite way to listen to music? All the way up without being interrupted.
When is your favorite time to listen to music? While I'm designing, cooking or drawing.
What are your 3 favorite songs right now and why? 1. Sunflower by Rex Orange County - My husband and I don't share the same music taste, but for some reason, we love this song and we probably sang this every morning during spring-summer. 2. Hunnybee by Unknown Mortal Orchestra - This song puts me in good spirits, especially in the mornings. 3. Sunshine by Flight Facilities & Reggie Watts - No reason needed. The bass line is *chef's kiss*.
What are your 3 favorite albums of all time and why? Hmmm, that's a tough one. Probably... 1. Música De Fondo by Zoé - It's an MTV Unplugged concert, very different from what Zoé normally does but it's so far my favorite album from them. 2. A Kind of Magic by Queen - This one hits home. Queen has been present my whole life. My dad used to put me to sleep while singing to Queen's songs. I also have a lot of memories of my dad and me singing their songs in the car. Good times! 3. I Don't Want to Grow Up by Descendents - They've been my favorite band for years so it's really hard for me to pick just one. But this one has most of my favorite songs.
38 | OCTOBER 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM
What is your favorite way to listen to music? On vinyl
What are you 3 favorite songs right now and why? 1. 25 & Wastin' Time by Vincent Neal Emerson - This is a song that makes you tap your foot when it plays. I love playing this one when I don't feel like doing anything. 2. Light My Love by Greta Van Fleet - GVF is awesome because they're a new age rock band that sounds like an old school band–I love this one because of the vocals and heavy drums, there's no better song to roll down the windows and drive fast on the interstate to. 3. September by Earth, Wind and Fire - There is no song that creates the vibes this song does–I dance every time it comes on.
When is your favorite time to listen to music? After work with my fiancee while we cook dinner.
What are your 3 favorite albums of all time and why? 1. At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash - My grandpa played this all the time when I was a kid–it makes me feel nostalgic and makes me miss him. Johnny Cash is my favorite artist and hearing the prisoners cheer when he plays is just incredible. I can listen to this one from front to back. 2. SOUND & FURY by Sturgill Simpson - I love all of Sturgill but this one is a roller coaster ride. It's more of a rock album than country, but it's Sturgill and he can do whatever he wants. It's awesome. 3. Good kid, m.A.A.d city by Kendrick Lamar - Kendrick is the king of storytelling in rap and this was his masterpiece. I played this one on a loop when I was walking to class in college and I'll be playing it until I can't listen to it anymore. There are zero skips on the entire album.

AWESOME FOUNDATION GRANT AWARD WINNER
Shop-with-a-Cop The holiday season is quick approaching, and the Moorhead Police department is gearing up—to go shopping. December 2021 marks the fourth year that the Moorhead Police Athletics and Activities League (PAL) will be hosting Shop-with-a-Cop, a program designed to connect with at risk and underserved Moorhead children while also providing them and their families with a little Christmas cheer. “It’s a fun way to connect with the community,” says Sergeant Scott Kostohryz, one of the organizers of the event. “Unfortunately, a majority of contact between the police and the community is negative in nature—people don’t call and tell us they are having a good day—and that can be even more traumatizing for a kid. So we want to build those positive interactions; build trust in us, and trust in the community itself. There are a lot of options for adults, not as much outreach for kids.” To proactively reach out to the youth of the community, the Moorhead Police Department has been creating opportunities to interact. Since their first event, a kids hockey game in 2007, they have created multiple programs to connect community children with police officers, such as providing bikes for area children or hosting their first baseball game this past July. To make it

easier for the community to assist and donate to their endeavors, the non-profit, Moorhead Police Athletics and Activities League (PAL), was formed in 2017. “The nice thing is that we don’t have any parameters,” laughs Kostohryz. “We can try different things. Our imagination is our only limitation.” For Shop-with-a-Cop, each child is paired up with an individual police officer and provided with funds to purchase holiday gifts for their family members. The pair spend time shopping and getting to know each other before going to the volunteer gift wrapping station set up at the front of the store. While the child gets their presents wrapped, the officer sneaks away to purchase and wrap a Christmas gift for their partner. In this way, each child returns home with wrapped gifts for everyone in their household, including themselves. The first two years of the program served between 30 and 50 community children nominated by schools, counselors, probation officers and occasionally judges. Last year the program helped over 70 kids get presents, and Sergeant Kostohryz is hoping 2021 will expand their reach even further. “Last year we just grew. We’re starting to have parents call, which means we are building relationships with the parents and family, too. We’ve been really lucky. Target has been a great corporate
sponsor and a lot of organizations and people help keep us going. We’re still growing and so far we haven’t had to turn anyone away. Ideally, we’d love to expand to help kids all over Clay County.” Funding for the Moorhead Police Athletics and Activities League changes every year, as PAL doesn’t have a specific funding source. This year Shopwith-a-Cop will be partially funded by a grant from the Cass Clay chapter of the Awesome Foundation, who named the program their September 2021 grantee. Their gift of $1000 will assist PAL in reaching out to ten additional families this holiday season. Sergeant Kostohryz is firm that it is the continual combination of support from organizations, companies and individuals that make the Shop-with-aCop program successful. “We appreciate groups that step up and support programs like Shop-witha-Cop. It’s amazing how expensive doing good is. It takes money to do programs like this, and you need public support. In other parts of the country this program would not exist. It is the community supporting the program that has kept us going these four years. The continued support of law enforcement in general, and programs like this. It really is building a community together.”
Community members who wish to learn more, support the Moorhead Police Athletics and Activities League, or a specific program like Shop-with-a-Cop, are encouraged to contact Sergeant Scott Kostohryz directly. Phone: 218-299-5283 Email: scott.kostohryz@moorheadpolice.com Website: moorheadpal.org/ Facebook: @MoorheadPAL
The Cass Clay chapter of the Awesome Foundation awards a $1,000 gift each month for awesome ideas of all sorts. Grant recipients do not need to be associated with a non-profit. Applications can be made at awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/ cassclay.

s summer gives way to winter, the change in weather calls for a change in daily routines. Jackets begin to make an appearance, pumpkin spice becomes a staple in households, and preparations to brace for the colder weather begin. With all of these daily adjustments, modifications in skincare routines are mandatory to keep up with the changing weather. While the temperatures drop, you most likely notice that your skin becomes increasingly dry, flakey and dull. Luckily, there are simple changes that can be implemented into your skincare routine that will keep your skin radiant all year round. Local esthetician and spa Owner of Belle Amé Luxury Skin Studio in West Fargo, Maggie Homstad, discusses the necessary changes that can be made in your skincare routine to help maintain a glowing complexion.
FALL SKINCARE TIP #1-
HYDRATE YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN. Skincare is not something that should only be addressed as a superficial concern. Nourishing your body with supplements and H20 is crucial for reaping the benefits of a healthy glow this fall. Licensed esthetician Maggie Homstad suggests supplementing your diet with fish oil. “The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil will really help to hydrate your skin from the inside out.” The easiest way to incorporate fish oil into your diet is by taking a daily fish oil tablet. These tablets can be purchased at grocery stores, superstores and local pharmacies. She also encourages upping your water intake to combat the dryer, cooler climate. Increasing your water consumption by even 16 ounces a day can make a noticeable difference in your skin health.
FALL SKINCARE TIP #2 -
MOISTURIZE YOUR SKIN CORRECTLY WITH HYALURONIC ACID. The moisturizers that were used in the summertime during hot and humid months won’t be enough for the fall climate. "A good choice for a topical product that you can use at home would be Hyaluronic acid.” For this, Maggie suggests using the iS Clinical Hydra-Cool Serum, which is the go-to in her own skincare routine. “Hyaluronic acid works to attract water molecules inside of your skin so that they come to the surface.” You can purchase this serum, as well as other hyaluronic acid containing products at her studio, Belle Amé.
FALL SKINCARE TIP #3-
KEEP YOUR SKIN BARRIER HEALTHY WITH REGULAR ESTHETIC TREATMENTS. Her last suggestion for getting the most out of your routine is to incorporate monthly skin care treatments. These services will not only leave you with an immediate glow, but routine trips to the esthetician will greatly improve your skin’s health. Maggie’s recommendation for a treatment that’s suitable for all skin types this fall is a microdermabrasion with facial. “What a microdermabrasion does is it exfoliates your skin and infuses hydrating ingredients into the skin.” During a microdermabrasion, the esthetician gently removes the dead layer of skin that is sitting on the surface of your face. This allows the nutrient-rich products to penetrate into the skin most efficiently. “Also, the Snow Day Hydrating facial, Honey Enzyme facial and HydroFacial are all great choices that will leave your skin very hydrated and glowy.” To learn more, visit belleameskinstudio.com.

Tell us a bit about yourself: I am originally from Mandan, North Dakota. I graduated from MSUM with a BFA in Printmaking and a minor in Mass Communication in 2014 and decided to stay in the F-M area. You may have seen me around because I used to work at Atomic Coffee for many years but now I currently work at Office Sign Company as the shipping coordinator. When I am not working or creating art, you can find me getting a coffee at a local shop, thrifting or hanging out with my boyfriend, Luke, and our two goofy dogs, Kanye and Jay-Z. Describe what you create at Yellow Chair Press? At Yellow Chair Press, I create mostly screen prints with each layer hand-drawn and pulled to create a limited amount of prints for each edition. I like to add a little wit and humor to my work, especially in the titles, to make my prints unique and fun for everyone. To keep my work original and limited, I only do one edition of a print so the amount in the edition is all that there is. AKA once I sell out of a certain print, I don’t make more. Tell us where your name came from? I don’t really know exactly, but when I started printmaking, I made a few prints
that had chairs in them, and for some reason, I always made the color of the chairs yellow. And then, one day, I found this green, wooden, miniature armchair, probably for a doll house, that I bought and painted yellow. From then on I knew there was something about yellow chairs I was drawn to, so when it came time to think of an art name to use, I thought of that chair and figured it would be a good name. How did you get started with your business? Once I graduated college and found a place to print (I shared a little studio with my boyfriend at Seagrave Studios below the Red Raven Espresso Parlor), I began to make work and build up an inventory. I attended printmaking conferences, saw what others did to continue their art, and was inspired. I just created work and sold some here and there at coffee shops or small shows. Eventually, I discovered The Arts Partnership and became a partner, which opened my eyes to a lot more about local art. I began being a guest artist at their holiday markets and when they opened Aptitude Studios at West Acres, and I knew I wanted a space of my own and so I applied, got my own studio, and that’s where I guess my business officially started to go into full bloom.
What's your most popular print currently? I think the most popular print, currently, is one of the prints I created and entered in the 2020 Rourke Halloween show. It is called "Fargo Fright", and it is a print of the popular scene of downtown Fargo with the iconic Fargo Theater sign… however, a Godzilla-like monster foot is destroying/ reeking havoc on the town. I only did a small edition of that print, so I think I only have one or two left! What's your personal favorite print you've created? One of my favorite prints I have made is a screen print titled “Jurassic Park.” The image is of a group of elderly people having a ton of fun playing on a big colorful playground. I like this print because I think everyone is a child at heart, and who wouldn’t smile when you see old people on a playground having a grand ol’ time? It's actually the image I use on my business cards. I see you work with other print mediums, but focus mostly on screen printing–what draws you to this type of medium? When I graduated college, I knew that I wanted to continue printmaking, but I didn’t have access to a studio anymore to do some of the other printmaking methods. Screen printing seemed to be the most affordable and apartment-friendly method to continue with. But even before graduating, I chose to focus on screenprinting because I enjoyed that you could screen print on multiple materials, the ink
was easy to mix and create colors, it dried fast and I could finish multiple editions in a day. Another major point for me was that I could still use hand drawn methods in creating my pieces because I have always been more traditional with my art than getting into digital art technology. How do you come up with a new piece of art? What are you inspired by? Inspiration for my prints comes from just everyday life. I probably consistently have 2-3 sticky notes with random words written on them as print ideas…. Funny things people say and do, stuff I see at thrift stores, random thoughts that pop into my head, events happening in the world, basically anything and everything! What is the most challenging thing? Finding time to create when you’re in an art funk. Just like having writer's block, art funks can be draining. The past year has been hard because of the pandemic. I found myself not wanting to work on anything new for quite some time, but over the summer, after getting back to a little normalcy, I realized I needed to get some new work out and got back into the studio. What advice would you have given yourself 10 years ago? Oh man… 10 years ago seems like forever! I’d probably say stick with your gut. I went to college knowing that I wanted to do art, but was told “you’d never make any money.” So I started college with a major for something I didn’t really want to do…
eventually I learned I’d rather be happy with what I am doing than just doing it because someone told me going for art was a bad idea, so I switched majors, learned about printmaking, fell in love, and here I am now! Since we are diving into October...do you have a favorite Halloween costume you've worn?! I’m going to be honest here, I went trick-ortreating until I was a senior in high school… (Free candy is free candy!) So I had many years of costumes… but I think my favorite costume was when I went as the red Power Ranger, or else a couple of years ago for a work Halloween party I went as Log Lady from the show Twin Peaks! Where can people find your work? My studio is located at Aptitude Creative Studios in West Acres mall. It’s a collection of studios with wonderful artists and makers doin’ their thing! My studio is #18 and we have open studios most Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. Plus, with the holidays around the corner, keep an eye on the Aptitude Facebook page for Holiday Market dates where all the studio tenants will have their wares for sale! Website/social to stay in touch? I am mostly active on my instagram (@yellowchairpress), so follow me there for all updates on new prints, shows/exhibits, events I’ll be at, and more!

THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL
GIVING BACK WHILE IN GRADUATE SCHOOL,
a Foreign Perspective
Happy Fall! This month I had the privilege of connecting with a dear friend who has exposed me to many opportunities in the F/M area. She is a constant source of inspiration and knowledge whenever I want to have a mind expanding conversation or get advice from a worldly person: Dr. Belmihoub is my go to person.
By Alexandre Cyusa Photo By Josiah Kopp 46 | OCTOBER 2021 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM
Dr Belmihoub has been living in Fargo for the last eight years. She got her Doctorate degree from North Dakota State University's English department while she taught writing courses and engaged in community building and New American programming for inclusion. She grew up in Algeria and is from the Kabyle, a Berber ethnic group indigenous to North Africa. Her travel experience, meeting with international and multicultural people, and her
story as a Kabyle woman all influence her work and life. She currently works as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion program coordinator at UBUNTU Consulting. Additionally, she coordinates programs at the New American Consortium and teaches writing courses at North Dakota State College of Science in Fargo. The Valley is fortunate to have her call here her home away from Algeria Until our paths cross again: Stay Healthy! - Cyusa
Where do you call home? I call home both Chorfa, Algeria and Fargo, North Dakota. Chorfa is where I am from and where my story and history start, while Fargo is where I found myself, carved my path, and defined who I am. How did you develop such a passion for giving back to the community? I was a shy girl. I hid behind my mother’s skirt when someone addressed me directly. I heard the women in my life say that silence has value and words of wisdom have weight. I was taught that it was important to learn my place in the world. I took every lesson with skepticism. I knew they were relevant in my immediate local context, but I wondered what it would be like in a different cultural context. How are silence and words valued in other places? What is the place of a woman in the world? I asked myself these questions very young. What I learned is that it is all about perspective. It is about what you value, what works for you, your family and your community. What matters most to me is to be respectful, learn, grow and keep an open mind and heart. It may sound typical, but giving back to the community was a lesson I first learned from my parents. I saw my parents volunteer in our community. I witnessed my mother give her home, food, skills, clothing, money and time to family, friends and community members. I saw my father give his time and resources to family, local sports, politics and community building. I did not know how crucial community engagement would become in my life. However, during my first academic and cultural exchange program, I learned this life changing phrase: “giving back.” I was at Council Bluffs, Iowa, in a community college for one academic year as an
exchange student. That is where I met, for the first time, many people my age who were from different cultures, religions and countries. We were mentored as a cohort on volunteering and learned about giving back to the community that educated and brought us up. It felt rewarding to see change happen with packaging food, providing meals and, most importantly, empowering people. It finally made sense to me that what my parents did was giving back with no conditions or expectations. It was just part of their life to make their environments and communities better. I understood that giving back was something that I was committed to because we only live well, if we all live well.
to find time to do anything other than study. However, for me, I needed a community to belong to. I needed a balance between work, school, and a supportive community. Taking a break from studying to do community work only enriched my experience living here. I was able to connect to people and get out of the isolation that graduate school can cause. I wrote my dissertation using community-based research approaches. I studied New American Digital Storytelling which is a topic that was informed by the World in Fargo Moorhead, one of the community projects I participated in. Engaging in the local community broadened my perspective, allowed me to be a resource for others, and built a stronger local community.
Why should graduate students care about the FM community?
How can other graduate students get involved?
There are countless opportunities to use one’s skills, time, and resources to help others in need. Some of the opportunities I was involved in in the past included serving food at homeless shelters, packaging and providing food boxes to fight hunger, and participating in community building events like Pangea. I particularly invested my time in tutoring English and assisting with programming activities at The New American Consortium for the last five years and the Afro American Association over the past two years. As an international student, I understood the struggle of being a newcomer in this community. I knew the difficulty of learning a new language, let alone having to learn it as an adult later in life. So, I assisted new immigrants and refugees in learning and practicing their English.
I encourage all graduate and undergraduate students to use their volunteer hours, community service time, and free time in a community setting that employs their skills. Additionally, it is rewarding to know that the specialized, technical, and theoretical knowledge we gain in school has impact on the “real” world. I envision a FM area, a country, and a world in which universities and schools collaborate with nonprofits and small businesses to connect students, staff, and faculty to opportunities that are mutually beneficial.
What are some of the things you do in the community? As a graduate student, it was difficult 47
