A note from the President

We are excited to bring you this edition of The Bridge, as we illustrate how The Chamber works with all of you to leverage and maximize relationships, resources and expertise for the most critical projects and initiatives in our region.

The ability of our community and Chamber to influence local, state and national leaders and elected officials can give rise to opportunities that would otherwise not be possible. A prime example of this would be the Good Jobs Challenge Grant award; which saw 78 major letters of support from across our region and states to get behind The Chamber and elevate the FMWF region to become one of only 32 EDA Good Jobs Challenge Grant awardees in the entire nation. Now, harnessing the power of this grant and working alongside our community partners will create lasting systems and effects to benefit several facets of our region for years to come.

Our recent trip to Washington, D.C. was a week of leveraging relationships and expertise to advance issues and topics for our community. This year we traveled with over 25 individuals including military leaders, established and innovative business owners and operators, and our regional elected officials, to have intentional meetings with Congressional delegates, federal agencies and other major leaders. This created a very dynamic and diverse group of FMWF representatives as we brought an array of perspectives, experiences and knowledge to the table. I mention this trip about D.C. because one of the greatest assets of The Chamber is our dedication to public policy. We are working to share more about this work with you more often, as it can oftentimes go unnoticed, but it has unprecedented effects on our community and region. Getting the hard work done on local, state and national levels is what will keep our big goals and initiatives moving forward, and ensure our region’s health, vibrancy and vitality, and that of our businesses.

Enjoy this Bridge as we showcase just a few ways FMWF is working and succeeding locally, regionally and nationally. From workforce initiatives, to our stellar education entities, to an area business finding themselves in the top 0.1% nationally.

Speaking of the national stage, stay tuned to our channels as we will soon announce our 2023 Voices of Vision speaker! We won’t be keeping you in suspense for too much longer; this will be another big year and another huge speaker.

Meet The Chamber Staf NEW HIRES

Please briefly describe what you do in your position.

As Vice President of Events, I am responsible for the strategy, development, management and execution of events that are targeted to promote the growth and retention of Chamber members.

What do you love about your role so far?

I feel very passionately about making all events, regardless of the type, an experience for people. I love being creative with spaces, food, décor, and programs. At The Chamber, I get to plan a wide variety of events that have direct impact on the FMWF area!

Please briefly describe what you do in your position.

As the Event Support Specialist, I work closely with our VP of Events to help coordinate and execute all of our events. I will also work with staff to provide event planning expertise and assistance to anything event or programming related. In all of this I work mainly with the coordination of event details and logistics.

What do you love about your role so far?

The Chamber of Commerce is a fantastic example of the strength behind connections and community. Through our programs and events, there are many opportunities to network with influential professionals. Additionally, The Chamber serves as a voice for local business owners and industries. When you are involved in The Chamber, your knowledge, options and ideas become a part of that voice.

More about Nicolette

When I am not at work you can find me spending time with my family and friends, shopping, reading, or doing something outdoors.

This is such an easy answer – the people. I’ve worked with some incredible individuals in my previous organizations, but The Chamber staff as a whole is second to none. Going to work is something I look forward to every day because of the people I am surrounded by. I read a crazy statistic that you will spend 1/3 of your life at work – the key takeaway from this was who you choose to work with is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. I can confidently say that I’ve found coworkers – and work – that challenge me day in and day out to be the best version of myself. That’s something that is hard to come by and something that I’m very grateful for.

Why

The Chamber?

The Chamber team is incredibly passionate about what they do and the people they serve. With everything they do, they have you and your organization’s best interest in mind. When you become a member of The Chamber you are investing in not only your organization but also this community.

MIDWES T

In November, our Chamber and community hosted the Midwest Energy Summit, the fourth part of this major regional series. The morning was filled with genuine and difficult conversations, new and diverse perspectives, innovation and collaboration, and several voices from across the country. Energy and business leaders were able to connect, learn, and take a deep dive into long-term energy production and sustainability.

One of our keynote speakers, Julie Fedorchak, spoke on the rising cost of energy for people across the country. “Let me be clear, I have no doubt that technology can and will fix this gap. The most brilliant minds in the world are working on it, and the budget as discussed is massive,” she said.

“In a regional or integrated grid, any single state’s attempts to ban or impose state-level burdens on specific multistate resources is unlikely to be successful as a policy prescription to challenges,” said former Federal Energy Regulatory Commissioner Tony Clark. “Those resources will then just get built somewhere else, but you’ll lose the value of the investment, and it will have exactly the same impact on your internal resources on the grid, your resource adequacy and reliability. We really are in a multi-state environment, and we are all in it together.”

Thank you to Cass County Electric Cooperative and Xcel Energy for being the premier sponsors for this summit, and making these critical discussions possible.

The Midwest Summit series is continuing to gain momentum and is now co-hosted by 25 chambers of commerce across Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

The Midwest Summit series is an important gathering of community leaders that provides vital insight into the categories that matter most to the Upper Midwest. The Mighty 790 - 104.7 and MWC Advertising Fargo-Moorhead continue to support this Summit Series because we believe that open communication on topics such as these are incredibly important to our future. If you don’t understand what’s happening in your own region, you aren’t fully preparing yourself for the environment you are navigating. Topics such as ag, energy, economics and tech are core to the daily topics in not only Fargo-Moorhead but the Upper Midwest as a whole. As the community leader in daily conversation, KFGO and MWC Advertising are proud to help bring the Midwest Summit Series to more people on a quarterly basis.

We value the opportunity to partner with the FMWF Chamber to bring this important information to our members. Not only do our members receive relevant information, but it makes us look good!

The Midwest Energy Summit is always a great opportunity for us to have an honest conversation about energy. Whether is how it’s generated or how it’s consumed, the summit covers every angle and provides invaluable information to everyone in the space. Family obligations prevented me from attending in person this year but tuning in remotely was a snap! It felt like I was in the room to listen and engage.

I was excited to attend a recent Midwest Energy Summit hosted by The Chamber. We are without question an energy powerhouse with our oil, natural gas, coal and renewables. It’s tremendously important for all of us in the Upper Midwest to understand the opportunities and responsibilities that go with each energy source. Additionally, depending upon where you live, the issues may be different. The Midwest Energy Summit was a great opportunity for startup and established companies to understand the business opportunities that exist in the energy industry and the potential for new business opportunities.

The No. takeaway from the event, which was put on by the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce, was that nearly every business in the modern world is at risk of a cyber attack. That point was driven home by several speakers and panelists who offered their perspective on cybersecurity and how it pertained to fields like agriculture, energy, health care and the military. While the morning’s discussion took on a foreboding tone with regard to the dangers of cyberattacks, the speakers and panelists also offered guidance for businesses seeking to secure their enterprises. ‘Any company at any time’ Jerry Wynne, vice president of security and chief information security officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, opened the summit. Wynne called upon attendees to establish and foster a “culture of cybersecurity” at their firms. In the same way a business would rely on its CFO to approve major purchases, Wynne said that businesses should weakest link will be your employees,” he said. “They will click on things. They will do the wrong things. You want to embrace the idea that cybersecurity (attacks) can happen to any company at any time.” A growing danger Both Jeff Crawford and Blake Griffin, the two keynote speakers who followed Wynne, agreed that cyberattackers have more options than ever before. Crawford, a systems engineer specialist for Palo Alto Networks, said the attack surface “has grown infinitely” thanks to the evergrowing number of network devices that businesses use. Griffin, president of Fargobased Communication Network Engineering, added that cyberattacks cost businesses an average of $200,000. Citing data from his company’s own research arm, Crawford shared that ransomware attacks make up the largest share of cyberattacks in 2022. Business email compromises made up the second largest portion, with the two accounting for 70% of all cyberattacks. In its simplest form, a ransomware attack is when someone steals a company’s data and holds it for ransom. Those attacks have become increasingly sophisticated, though, Crawford said, with attackers now stealing, deleting, denying and threatening to publicize data. In short, Crawford inconvenience and high cost. Justin Otto, director of sales for Arctic Wolf, expanded on the difficulties small businesses face when it comes to cybersecurity. “To stay on top of all of the latest tools, tactics and procedures that the adversary groups are using, it’s a huge and daunting task for companies that can’t afford multiple, 24/7 security engineers to monitor their network,” he said. Still, he said that any business can take steps to improve their cybersecurity. “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great,” Otto said. “Cybersecurity is a journey, it’s not destination,” he later continued. “Wherever you’re at, there are things that you can do to improve.” International affair During the morning’s second panel discussion, experts pointed out that cybersecurity attacks come from around the globe. State-sponsored attacks have increased 100% from 2019, with 10 more attacks taking place each month, Crawford said. Foreign attackers have a broad range of interests as well. Perhaps the most impactful area of interest is the military, as Maj. Dan Sly from the North Dakota Air National Guard said. “We are just this tiny little state up here, but we are running some major, major up here North Dakota’s chief information officer who moderated the discussions, added to Sly’s point later in the morning. Riley said that North Korean attackers were found to be hiding in the network of one of North Dakota’s school districts. The attack was squashed before it advanced further, Riley said. However, the reason the North Korean attackers lingered in the school’s network was to try and subsequently access the National Guard’s network of nuclear weapons. Dan Inman, chief information security officer for the Minnkota Power Cooperative, said that foreign actors have also targeted the nation’s energy systems. He asked the audience to imagine a scenario where an attacker caused North Dakota’s power system to go down in the middle of the winter. “Yes, we’re in North Dakota, but the network is connected,” Inman said. “We’re seeing a lot of activity from Russia, from North Korea, from China, from Iran and even domestically.” Nathan Joraanstad shared that the FBI has even predicted that agriculture will become a growing target for ransomware attacks. This is particularly the case in the planting and harvest seasons, when foreign countries would seek to disrupt productivity and yields. “People are starting to wake up to the fact that they could be David Samson The Forum and many more... and many more... KEYNOTE SPEAKER

The 2022 Midwest Economic Outlook Summit welcomed four keynote speakers, including Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis President & CEO Neel Kashkari, and two interactive panels filled with regional business leaders, industry experts and government representatives. Attendees heard directly about major regional challenges and opportunities, and how our businesses, policymakers and individuals must remain agile to respond to this evolving environment.

WASHINGTON, D.C. BUSINESS FLY-IN

In November, a cohort of 25 FMWF business leaders participated in our annual Chamber D.C. Business FlyIn. The leaders represented business interests at our nation’s capital during key meetings with each of our ND and MN Congressional delegates, federal agencies and other major stakeholders. The goal of the fly-in was to discuss and advance issues that are important to our region while hearing from experts on issue areas such as energy, immigration, military and more. This year the group focused advocacy efforts on supporting workforce solutions, smart immigration policy, infrastructure projects and military topics.

Another crucial aspect of this fly-in is advocating on behalf of military support for the region. Our business and military leaders conducted and attended meetings with the congressional delegation and other key military personnel, messaged the importance of our National Guard, and all of our states’ military assets, to our region. This year, our military messaging was one of gratitude to the congressional delegates, as well as advocating for the reinstatement of an Air Guard federal tuition program to assist with recruitment efforts. We were also joined by delegations from Grand Forks and Minot for the National Guard Association of the

United States’ North Dakota Military and Congressional Reception.

The group heard from The Chamber’s government affairs partners, Primacy Strategy Group, as well as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and received a tour of the Pentagon. Additionally, they heard briefings from Veterans Affairs, the National Guard Association of the United States, Office of Refugee Resettlement, and Edison Electric Institute. We are grateful to have had such a strong presence in D.C. for the week, and look forward to future visits and strengthening our voice and relationships on the national level.

COMPREHENSIVE WORKFORCE

MARKETING CAMPAIGN | TALENT ATTRACTION

Thanks to the Regional Workforce Impact Program (RWIP), a North Dakota State Grant, the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation (GFMEDC) will launch a $600,000 campaign to attract talent to the region. It’s the most comprehensive regional talent recruitment plan to date.

The GFMEDC is receiving $450,000 from the state along with a $150,000 match from Fueling Our Future. The goal for 2023 is to fill an additional 300 open positions in the region, attracting up to 1,000 more people to our market.

CONTINUE PROGRESS WITH DOCUMENT-READY SITES

The GFMEDC has worked with multiple partners to build the program and qualify sites across the region as document ready, which means that a significant amount of pre-work, identification and location of utilities, and technical reporting on the properties is complete. This is crucial for companies looking to FMWF for a new location, as these sites drastically improve the speed to market.

The GFMEDC is continuing to work with regional partners to prepare additional. The region has two document ready sites covering more than 300 acres and six proposed sites.

CULTIVATING TECH TALENT | EMERGING DIGITAL ACADEMY

Emerging Digital Academy is North Dakota’s first (and only) immersive coding bootcamp focused on accelerating the technology community. The Full Stack Engineering program is an immersive 20week course that teaches not just the concepts of coding and software design, but how to use cutting-edge software tools to build modern web apps. No prior software development experience is required to participate in the program.

Since the program’s inception in April 2020, the program has graduated eight cohorts with 55 graduates.

THE FUTURE OF FUELING OUR FUTURE | FOF 2.0

As Fueling Our Future 1.0 reaches its end, the organization’s Board of Directors contracted with Economic Leadership, a consultancy that had recently completed a workforce strategy for the region, to engage local stakeholders and determine areas of focus, prioritization, and expectations for a second fundraising campaign. Business education and community stakeholders, as well as Chamber leadership, GFMEDC leadership and FOF investors, are currently collaborating to build a defined plan and strategy for what Fueling Our Future looks like in the future.

TESTIMONIALS

“Our regional colleges and universities draw in more than 30,000 higher education students that call our metro community home. Campus FM’s mission to develop a collective strategy focused on college student engagement and retainment is exactly what our community needs. The importance of expanding the social infrastructure of students outside of their campus life is critically important to ensuring they are connected within our community and see a long-term future for themselves here.”

“The intentional and meaningful engagement that Campus FM will bring to our regional college students will not only grow our workforce capacity and add to the vibrancy of our community, but will provide a foundation for future economic and cultural growth. This, coupled with an actively engaged student population across our community, will help attract new residents and businesses all while further enticing the retention and further growth of businesses already within our community.”

“Campus FM is the kind of long-term strategic investment that’s vital for the continued success of the entire Metro. Out greatest asset is our students, and finding ways to not only engage them while they are attending a local college or university but to keep more of them here as young professionals and beyond will ensure that we’re growing economically across every sector. We know that today’s young generations expect communities to be filled with diverse artistic and cultural opportunities when deciding where they will live, and we’re delighted to know that there will be opportunities for our robust arts sector to plug in more directly with this demographic to help them see, experience and engage in our community through the Campus FM initiative.”

2022 Workforce and Housing Summit

In November, F5 Project hosted the 2022 Workforce and Housing Summit at the Courtyard by Marriott in Moorhead. F5 is a local nonprofit that works with formerly and currently incarcerated individuals to provide them with job opportunities, housing and other resources in the FMWF area. At the event, attendees heard from F5’s CEO & Founder Adam Martin, business leaders, and speakers from state offices about the challenges and stigma around formerly and currently incarcerated individuals. The summit also included a job and housing fair where attendees were able to learn more about the second-chance employers and rental opportunities in the area. As a business-led, community focused initiative, Ignite FMWF was a proud sponsor of this event, and spent the day connecting with attendees and hosting interviews with currently incarcerated individuals for open positions at The Chamber and Chamber Foundation. This summit was designed to engage the community to build a stronger workforce and housing network through second chances, collaboration and grace.

Health, Tech & Trades Career Expo

Tractors, trucks, tools and over 3,800 local students filled the FARGODOME on December 6 for the Health, Tech & Trades Career Expo. Over 55 area schools were in attendance for this annual event, geared towards helping get 9th grade students excited about careers in the Health, Tech, and Trade fields. Area businesses, like Marvin, Bobcat Company, Essentia Health, Sanford Health and many more showcased their career opportunities through hands-on activities, engaging conversations, and of course, some swag for the students to take home. Team members from The Chamber and Chamber Foundation served on the Steering Committee for the Expo, which met regularly to coordinate and facilitate the event. The Chamber Foundation’s Ignite Initiative was also proud to sponsor a booth at the Expo, along with the other 100+ organizations, colleges and universities, trade schools, nonprofits, and government agencies that took the opportunity to connect with the area’s youth - our future workforce.

NDSU’S REGIONAL RECOGNITION

NDSU is designated as an R1 research institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Since 1970, the Carnegie Classification has been the leading framework for recognizing excellence in research activities and compares and groups of accredited and degree-granting institutions. The R1 classification of “Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity” is the highest possible ranking awarded by Carnegie.

Carnegie’s latest list conferred only 146 institutions in the country with an R1 status and NDSU joins the University of Minnesota, Montana State University, and the University of Montana as the only R1 institutions in our region.

“Earning R1 status is a significant validation of the work NDSU researchers are accomplishing, and it signifies that we are having tremendous success in our research activity,” said NSDU President David Cook. “Our R1 status says that NDSU is among the best research institutions in the country.”

“NDSU’s R1 status is important in many ways,” added NDSU Vice President for Research and Creative Activity Colleen Fitzgerald. “It’s a powerful recruiting tool for faculty, students, and staff and it opens the door for NDSU to lead research endeavors like the multimilliondollar National Science Foundation Great Plains I-Corps Hub and the five state Mountains and Plains University Innovation Alliance. These regional projects will serve to leverage

existing research, education, and training programs to boost our collective ability to attract and support the expansion of hightech innovation and industry in the region. The world wants to know more about the great research happening in our region and NDSU is in a position to answer that call.”

Carnegie’s list is updated every three years and considers a range of statistics, including each institution’s research expenditures in both science and engineering disciplines and those in non-science and engineering disciplines, the number of doctorate degrees conferred, and the numbers of faculty, post-doctoral and non-faculty research staff. From the data, an institution’s research activity index is calculated to determine if they are part of the elite ranking.

Research expenditures are the costs of experimental activities that occur with a goal of discovering new information. They are an indication of the amount of research activity occurring at an institution at any given time and are a common metric used in university research. NDSU’s research expenditures have risen more than $18 million over the last three years to $164 million in fiscal year 2021.

In addition to expenditures, Carnegie examines the number of doctoral degrees conferred by an institution across STEM, social science, humanities, and other categories. NDSU conferred 139 doctoral degrees during the last fiscal year.

Fitzgerald noted that recognition like the Carnegie R1 classification only comes when an institution exemplifies excellence across a wide range of disciplines across campus.

“As NDSU continues to grow its research expenditures and reinforces its strategic stewardship and return on investment to North Dakota, the strength of our balanced portfolio approach will position us to take advantage of new possibilities on the federal front where we align with national priorities.”

MARVIN RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE IN HEALTH AND SAFETY

On November 16, Marvin, a premium manufacturer of windows and doors, earned OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star certification for its West Fargo North manufacturing facility in North Dakota, illustrating Marvin’s commitment to ensuring a safe working environment for its employees.

OSHA’s VPP Star certification recognizes organizations that maintain injury and illness rates below the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s national averages for their respective industries through effective safety and health management systems. Just 0.1% of companies across the United States have earned this credential. And now, four of Marvin’s facilities have received this certification.

“Marvin is committed to helping people live better. For our employees, that commitment comes to life through the focus on safety we have made for our manufacturing facilities, our investments in training and safety protocols and through the partners we choose to work with,” said Chris Barta, senior director of operations at Marvin. “We’re proud to have achieved this milestone at another Marvin facility in North Dakota – it’s just one example of the ways we continue to invest in our people.”

The West Fargo North manufacturing facility joins Marvin’s three existing VPP Star-certified locations in the area, Fargo, West Fargo South and Marvin Composites (formerly known as Tecton) – to make up four of the 11 total VPP Star-certified facilities in North Dakota. To earn VPP certification, employers must work cooperatively with OSHA and employees to prevent injuries through rigorous systems, testing and evaluations.

“Through our priority to keep our workforce safe, we are also committed to continue our role as a responsible corporate partner and employer in the Fargo community,” said Barta.

“I want to emphasize just how significant what the teams here have earned with VPP star-certification. Just 0.1% of companies across the United States have this credential. And now, four of Marvin’s Fargo-area facilities have received this designation. That’s incredible!”

With more than 1,100 people attending, and over 100 member booths, our Holiday Business After Hours was our biggest networking event of the year!

Thank you to Avis Fargo and Bernie's Wines and Liquors for sponsoring this unforgettable evening. We will see you at the next BAH in April!

DECEMBER EGGS & ISSUES

In early December, we were joined by area business, community and education leaders for a detailed discussion about what evolutions and strategies are taking place in education to meet workforce demands in FMWF. Topics included upskilling and reskilling, career academies, internships, mentorships, Ignite EDventures, partnerships with the business community, new programming and more.

OCTOBER WOMEN CONNECT

Jeanne Masseth, founder of Legacy Talent Development, spent the afternoon sharing how professionals at every level gain tremendous clarity with the support of a mentor. This workshop offered attendees a playbook for gaining a strong network of professional and personal mentors, and included action steps and accountability to propel attendees on their mentoring journeys.

NOVEMBER WOMEN CONNECT

Dr. Tiffany Johnson and her daughter Callyn Johnson pulled back the curtain and showcased how the depth of their relationship has led them on a path to have deeper conversations, higher standards, and stronger boundaries, to create a unified family that celebrates and supports one another in leading themselves separately. Their delivery and stories were genuine, edgy and honest as they hopefully left attendees with an ache to make their lives count. To make their lives matter.

Not even a snowstorm could stop the holiday spirit at the 2nd Annual Women

Connect: Jingle Mingle!

Almost 300 attendees braved the winter weather to enjoy live music and dance performances, photo opportunities, giveaways, booths from local vendors, beverages, and even an appearance from Santa himself! Attendees were able to connect with other area women in a laid- back atmosphere, all while getting in the holiday spirit. Thank you to all of our both sponsors and businesses that donated gifts and prizes to attendees.

EDventures connects educators with area businesses to create strong relationships and experiences for students. Educators will experience a company’s environment, interact with employees, and be exposed to the educational needs businesses and their industries are currently seeking, and will seek in the future.

This year’s EDventures will be held June 26-30, and will be a major opportunity for educators to get into the community for a firsthand experience with our businesses and the work they do.

We are currently looking for businesses/host sites for the 2023 sessions. These organizations would host educators for up to two hours and provide work-based learning opportunities.

For more info, or to sign up to be a host business, visit this QR code. Contact Matt at mwalstad@fmwfchamber.com for any general questions about the program.
