2020 Economic Outlook Forum! Thursday, February 20 Noon to 1:30 p.m. | Delta by Marriott

Tech, Trade, Turbulence and the 2020 Elections In early 2016, Karlgaard predicted Donald Trump would win the presidency. Now, he dons his political-economic lens once more to provide insight on the 2020 elections—and how it will all likely impact the U.S. economy and markets. In this speech, Karlgaard will tackle a number of questions. How strong, really, is the U.S. economy? What will trigger the next recession and when? Is the stock market poised for a crash, and how will we know one is coming? How far will Trump take his trade war, and how will China respond? Why are technologies such as AI speeding up and punishing businesses unable to keep up? Hear his financially grounded advice on how your business should deal with AI, the Cloud, IoT, and digital disruption. Stay tuned for more plans and speaker announcements soon to come!

IN MEMORY OF

Craig Whitney In place of a message from the president in this month’s Bridge, we are going to remember our visionary and fearless leader with this tribute to the man who led our organization for the past 10 years. On December 14, Chamber president and CEO Craig Whitney, passed away from complications with cancer. He has left behind a legacy after a professional journey that took him from the White House to corporate America to the Olympic Games. Prior to The Chamber, Craig served as chief of staff to the chairman of Cerberus Capital Management, former vice president Dan Quayle, in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1989, he joined the White House staff, serving through the entire Bush-Quayle administration and rose to the position of Assistant to the Vice President and Director of Advance. In that role, he coordinated all domestic and international events for the Vice President, eventually traveling more than a half million miles aboard Air Force Two. From there, Craig went on to a series of executive responsibilities in the private sector—serving as director of guest services and special events for the Atlanta

6  THE BRIDGE  •  JANUARY 2020

Olympic Committee, and vice president of external affairs for the widely respected Hudson Institute in Indianapolis. Craig’s impact here has been nothing short of incredible. Voices of Vision began from Craig’s own vision for bringing top national speakers to our region to talk about leadership and business. He played a major role in the creation of Fueling Our Future, a current region-wide initiative set out to support economic development and prosperity for Fargo Moorhead West Fargo and ensure our competitiveness and future success. Craig cared deeply for his country and our community. Ever the patriot, his dedication to honoring members of military was unmatched. He can be credited with the creation of our Military Affairs committee and Air National Guard Support Group, and has been a tireless advocate for the Happy Hooligans. He has also been a key leading voice in issues as permanent flood protection for the region. His expertise in public policy has resulted in the largest and most active committee, successful Eggs & Issues event series, and a rich policy program. Craig had a way of treating every individual with compassion and sincerity. He held every relationship in high regard, from his family and friends, to colleagues,

business associates and acquaintances. Those close to him remember his big heart and ability to inspire. He respected everyone on all sides of big issues and took the time to understand the big picture. His leadership can be described as bold, strategic, visionary and tenacious. He was passionate about evolving to meet the needs of today and driving new ideas and initiative with passion. There was also a very fun-loving side to Craig that not everyone got to see. Craig absolutely loved Christmas, even having a countdown to the big day on his phone. He frequently could be found inspiring his staff by playing Lee Greenwood throughout the hallway and causing gentle mischief with his sincere chuckle and smirk. Craig loved supporting the Bison, attending most all games, tailgating, and traveling to Frisco to watch the team play. He has left a positive influence and lasting legacy on not just Fargo Moorhead West Fargo, but in every stop throughout his journey. He will be missed by many. If you would like to share a memory of Craig to be included in a Chamber blog, please email info@fmwfchamber.com.

O P E R AT I O N

Thank You

Coming to your door January 15 to 17 The Chamber’s Operation Thank You has a mission to say THANK YOU to our members! This special event allows us to share with our membership new information and materials. This is our biggest ambassador-driven event of the year, and volunteers will be stopping by all member businesses on January 15–17 to deliver new packets with our 2020 Metro Profile & Member Directory, new window cling, flyers and more.

What to expect

• Ambassadors and Chamber volunteers will assemble new membership packets

How to help

• We need help delivering packets! Let us know if you’re willing to pick up packets at our office and bring them to members around town. It’s a great way to connect with other businesses!

• Then, we hit the town to hand-deliver packets to all area members

• Make sure your business address is updated in your member record (you can do it yourself on our website!) so we can make it to you.

• Watch for us to come and receive your new member materials

• Let your staff know that we’re coming so they can watch for us in case the main contact is out.

• If you’re out of town or a home-based business, we will mail your packet to you

• Show us around your offices or ask us questions when we come! We love connecting with you during these visits.

For more information or to become involved, contact Mickayla at mthompson@fmwfchamber.com.

I love Operation Thank You with The Chamber! It’s a great way to start out the New Year and it’s also a great way to meet many of the business leaders in our FMWF community and thank them for their support and membership throughout the year. It's also fun to assemble all the packets with our fellow Ambassadors and celebrate with them after they are all delivered too!”

—Kriss Burns, PRO Resources

As an Ambassador, Operation Thank You is the best one-on-one networking events of the year! Nowadays, everyone has their shields up, thinking someone is trying to sell them something. With Operation Thank You, as soon as they see you're there to thank them for being part of The Chamber, their shields drop and you can see them relax and smile as they know you’re a volunteer just out thanking them for their membership. When was the last time someone actually stopped into

a business and said thank you? —Bryan Shinn, SaveCoin

For many of us, today’s technology makes it all too easy to get wrapped up in the future, excited for innovation and hopeful for new successes that come with new decades, often putting the past in the rearview mirror. At Microsoft Fargo, this excitement is certainly noticeable; however, it can’t be severed from a strong pride of their roots. It is clear that the leaders and 1,600 Microsoft team members all recognize and are authentically proud of the fact that successes they celebrate each and every day, are tightly tied to their start. Microsoft Fargo recently celebrated their 20-year anniversary of their campus. This wasn’t 20 years of Microsoft Fargo; the team and community celebrated the roots of the physical location they have called home for 20 years now. Further driving home the importance of people and place, their celebratory program included numerous mentions of the many hardworking individuals who built Microsoft up to what it is today, including Governor Doug Burgum, and former site leader 14  THE BRIDGE  •  JANUARY 2020

Don Morton, as well as a 20-year celebratory logo of a tree on the campus that has flourished over the past 20 years, similar to that of the business itself. As Microsoft Fargo’s Site Leader, Sandi Piatz says this site has a lot of depth, referencing the numerous areas including research and development, customer service and support, accounting services, payroll, sales and more. All of this and the strong culture today can be traced back to the humble beginnings of Great Plains Software. After betting the family farm, Doug Burgum became president and CEO of Great Plains Software. This once-small tech company located in Fargo broke ground on a new Fargo location, and in September 1999, opened the doors to the Horizon Building, the first building at Microsoft Fargo’s current location. Since then, the campus has evolved, growing to become home to four buildings and becoming Microsoft after being acquired in May of 2001. This was no small acquisition for Microsoft in 2001; in fact, it was the most expensive

acquisition that Microsoft had made up until that point in time. Since then, Microsoft has grown immensely. Piatz shared that when Microsoft acquired Great Plains Software, they had about 2,000 employees globally. Today, the Fargo campus alone has 1,600 team members.

A combination of great talent, background of dynamic heritage businesses, and strong culture across the campus Though much has transformed around the campus since 1999, including a technology shift to the cloud, a hardware transformation from servers in rooms and phones on desks to mobile devices and working anytime any place, data has become the new oil, and bots, artificial intelligence and quantum computing are now part of our every day, what has not changed is that Microsoft is still a global company that believes in being customer obsessed and has the same strong values.

MEMBER PROFILE: MICROSOFT

scrapbook photos from the Microsoft Fargo Campus construction and tree that has flourished over the years This lone tree is the namesake for the road entering the campus “One Microsoft” is one of the main pillars of Microsoft. Piatz described this as every Microsoft employee around the globe, no matter where they sit, having the same mission of empowering every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. This cohesiveness complemented by a strong embracement of diversity, allows Microsoft to succeed. Piatz explained the importance of hiring diversity. “It helps us understand our customers because all of our customers are so diverse,” she said. She added that it gives them a wider range of ideas, which breeds unique thought leadership. A commitment to diversity doesn’t just mean hiring diverse individuals of ethnicity, background, perspective, abilities and thought. It means giving them a place to belong. This is why Microsoft has various employee groups open to diverse passions, backgrounds or interests to support inclusion. Their employee benefits don’t stop there though, they offer tuition reimbursement programs, wellness programs, career and professional development, parental leave for both mothers and fathers, family caregiver leave, employee stock purchase plan, and more. Microsoft is also committed to empowering their employees to give back to their communities. They have found a unique way to partner with their employees in this mission through their employee giving campaign. Microsoft matches $1 for $1 and an hour of service for $25 up to $15,000 per employee per year to any charitable organization. This campaign has been extremely successful in encouraging Microsoft employees to give both financially and of their time. In fact, Microsoft Fargo is one of the most charitable sites with $1.9 million coming from Fargo alone just in the last year.

This dedication to community has been a part of the very fiber of Microsoft Fargo. Piatz sees this as a way to connect people to the community saying, “Serving in our community gives us a greater place to live.” In addition, as a large tech employer, Piatz views it as their responsibly to continue to build an ecosystem of technology in the region, constantly striving to answer the question of “How do we help support our own backyard?” “A combination of great talent, background of dynamic heritage businesses, and strong culture across the campus” is what makes Fargo so unique, Piatz said. She further plugged that Microsoft Fargo is always recruiting and looking for great talent to join their team as the people are one of the biggest variables in making the Fargo site so wonderfully unique. Microsoft Fargo has come full circle. From their early beginnings on a farm and the groundbreaking of the first building, to now as a growing tech company that contributes to their ag beginnings through investments in initiatives such as the Grand Farm. Microsoft Fargo truly understands and cherishes its roots. Like the large tree that has flourished for 20 years on their campus and has become a symbol of their 20-year anniversary, we are excited to support such a great organization and watch as they extend their roots further and grow beyond imagination while they work toward celebrating many more decades of the Fargo site.

EGGS & ISSUES

A National Guard briefing and about HBOT: December Eggs & Issues recap

Delton Steele of U.S. Bank moderated December’s Eggs & Issues regarding the military. Steele has been a long-time advocate for our local military and serves as North Dakota’s chair of the Employer Support of the Guard Reserve (ESGR). The program kicked off with briefings from military leaders of our three local National Guard units: 119th Wing, ND Air National Guard, 141 Maneuver Enhancement Brigade (MEB), ND Army National Guard and 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry Regiment, MN Army National Guard. Colonel Darrin Anderson overviewed the 119th Wing mission and dove into national missions, shared information about the Regional Training Site, which is one of four sites in the Air National Guard, and shared the great accomplishment of the 119th Civil engineering squadron receiving the Deneke award, which designates the best civil engineering squadron in the Air National Guard. In relation to recruitment and retention, Anderson said, “Today, our end strength is over 95% and growing.” With this he asked those in attendance to spread the word that there is an Air National Guard here in Fargo and they are always looking for great people to join the team. This message is especially important since the Air National Guard was not able to get a national marketing contract. Anderson also reminded the audience of the enormous economic impact the NDANG had on 2018, reporting $184,331,448. Major Derek Kuntz, the Officer in Charge (OIC) for the 141 MEB took to the podium to speak about the area’s ND Army National Guard. After touching on their footprint across the state and trainings and operations around the country and even into Romania, he spoke to the large impact that they have locally with just over $100 million in economic impact. In addition, Major Kuntz shared that “Combined together, the North Dakota Army and Air National Guard, have just over 3,500 National Guard soldiers, airman and their dependents that reside within a 50-mile radius of Fargo Moorhead.” He ended with a preview to 2020 including one of the exciting projects in the works for the upcoming year, the 141 MEB Readiness Center. This $32 million project sitting on 25 acres of land is anticipated to be completed in 2021 and will house the 141 MEB headquarters and more. Captain Jordan Dibich, the OIC for the 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry Regiment, MN Army National Guard, wrapped up the military briefings by speaking to the Bearcats statewide presence, federal mission and international partnerships. He elaborated about the mission of the 2-136 IN explaining, “Close 16  THE BRIDGE  •  JANUARY 2020

#FMWFEGGS

with and destroy the enemy is the highlight of that mission statement.” He also shared the current strength of the Bearcats at 780 soldiers, this includes soldiers that drill as well as those that are recruited and are waiting to ship to training. Dibich touched on relationships, asking those in attendance to be mindful of the unique challenges that military families may face. Steele also conducted a panel focused on military services with Dr. Jeffrey Rondeau from the Fargo VA, Dr. Angela Collins from the Fargo VA and Tyler Einarson, a retired veteran of the USMC and employee with Healing with Hyperbarics of North Dakota. Dr. Rondeau kicked the panel off focusing on the overall VA. He explained that help begins the minute a military individual walks out the door of service, and that they are constantly trying to make veterans aware of all that they offer. Dr. Collins dove into specific issues that veterans face with mental health being at the forefront. She stated that the number one importance for them is suicide prevention. Tyler followed up with his own story of countless treatments and medications for his PTSD and other mental health struggles. He complemented the VA, stating “It’s the best VA in the country. Some of us realize how fortunate we are here.” The panel’s conversation shifted to the specific service of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy treatment. This is an emerging treatment option for those with PTSD. Senator Hoeven announced in September that the Department of Veterans Affairs has added the Fargo VA Health Care system to its hyperbaric oxygen therapy clinic demonstration program. This is one of five VA sites in the country. Tyler shared more of his personal story explaining the healing that HBOT has provided him and encouraged veterans to inquire about this option saying, “It is one of the most pleasant medical procedures I’ve ever had.” All of the military leaders and panelists had great extensive information to share so there wasn’t time for questions during this session, but the room remained full with conversations following the event.

“Lean Out offers a new and thoughtprovoking perspective on what it means to be a successful woman in the professional world. As a working mom, there were a number of points and examples Marissa made that resonated with me, especially related to how incentives and accomplishment can look different from the traditional measures of such, and how that’s something we can all strive to change in the workplace. LEADERSHIP FMWF

Leadership focus on entrepreneurship and innovation December’s Leadership FMWF session focused on innovation and entrepreneurship in our community. Year after year, this is always one of the most popular sessions. We have so many great innovators and entrepreneurs in our FMWF business community. The day started at Fargo Jet Center where the class had the opportunity to learn about the Jet Center and Weather Modification from Darren Hall. Following the presentation, the class toured the Jet Center and also heard from Dani Gilseth, Grateful Cratefulls; Patrick Kirby, Do Good Better Consulting; and Matt Lachowitz, Matt’s Automotive, who served on our entrepreneur panel. To kick off the afternoon, the class learned about one of our area’s best examples for innovation in the workplace, both in culture and in product, Bushel. Camille Grade, Carly Gunnerson and Ann Marie Persico spent that afternoon talking about Bushel and how innovative practices can be applied anywhere, in any seat! The class ended the day touring Hannaher’s and learning about their innovative practices in creating the everyday workspace.

Naming the YP of the Year

The Young Professionals Network has announced the winner of its first YP of the Year award! This honor is given to one YPN member that demonstrates outstanding commitment to their community and their professional development throughout the year. After a nomination period, the YPN leadership committee evaluated the nominations and selected the YP of the Year.

#FMWFYPN

Erin exudes professionalism, drive, approachability, sincerity, expertise and is a great example for other YPs Erin Larsgaard in the area. She is also incredibly involved with YPN Wold Johnson so she is dedicated to the program, her network, and being there as an asset for other YPs and their networks. Ask Alyssa, I believe she was one of the most involved YPs last year, attending probably more events than anyone. She comes and is present and works to meet new people and make them feel comfortable and respected and not just flocking to people she already knows. Also, she is a successful person but sets an example by garnering her peers' respect without bloviation; she is humble and respectable in how she conducts herself. That example of how we all should network and sincerely care about each other is important! She is now a member of the YPN Leadership Committee further proving her dedication to the program. She is the epitome of a young professional the community should take notice of and get to know. Hers is a career we should all be watching! *Erin serves as a Member at Large on the YPN Leadership committee*

YEA! YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY

Students begin work on business plans It’s hard to believe we are already starting our second segment of this year’s YEA! program. We finished our first segment at Concordia College Offutt School of Business and are beginning our next segment at NDSU’s Barry Hall. We will finish our program at MSUM later this spring, which will be here in no time! We continue to be thankful for the support and resources provided by each of our tri-college universities and the students enjoy experiencing what it’s like to attend class on a college campus.

December was filled with presentations from a variety of business individuals. Kimberly Flamm, Chic-fil-A, joined us to present on franchising; Rinda Norberg, Nothing Bundt Cakes, joined us to present on niche marketing; and we closed out December with Ashley Cossette, RHI Supply to talk about accounting principles. Our YEA! students have been making tremendous progress on their businesses. We have a wide variety of businesses in this year’s class, from fashion to dog toys, to an app, this year's class has brought a variety of ideas to the program. In addition to working on business plans, our students are also working hard to create their products and applications.

About YEA!

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) teaches middle and high school students how to start and run their own real businesses. YEA! is a national program, and our chamber is the first and only organization to host a YEA! program in North Dakota and one of few in the entire Midwest. Learn more at fmwfchamber.com/YEA.

Ambassadors Holiday Social Each year, the chamber ambassadors host a holiday social, where both Member and Public Relations teams, and Ambassadors Emeritus, gather to celebrate the season. Thank you to O’Clevy’s Drinks & Eats inside the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center for hosting us this past December. The ambassadors enjoyed tasty appetizers of buffalo wings and cajun potatoes over happy hour. Congrats to Brian Heger, 702 Communications, who won the ugly sweater contest.
