FROM THE
PRESIDENT Chamber Takes Longer View Hello 2018! In a community leader survey completed just a few months ago, a question was asked about how to leverage community strengths to spur regional growth and enhance the region’s attractiveness. The Chamber is taking comments to heart as we plan partnerships and programs to generate and foster a community-wide, longer term vision based on our exciting potential. The aim is to strengthen our economy and quality of life for the growth of all businesses, large and small. While the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo metro has much to be thankful for in economic vitality, certain constraints have emerged that may threaten our best intentions. There is an intuitive disconnect when we have a low unemployment rate while job openings beg for candidates. Both factors constrain our ability to meet market demand for economic expansion. Yet at the very same time, thousands of high school, trade and college grads replenish the employment pool annually with career-ready talent and fresh energy.
How can the labor supply and demand equation be better balanced to satisfy regional needs?
To have a wider discussion about strengths and opportunities, The Chamber is convening a task force, together with supporting organizations, that will paint broad outlines for moving business goals forward as a region, united in purpose and commitment. Can you imagine a Fargo Moorhead West Fargo known around the country by name and reputation? One that the nation’s businesses add to their must-invest-in or must-move-to spots? A region that competes nationally and globally because we offer market strength in a distinctive destination? To participate in this discussion, please give us a call.

Homeward Animal Shelter:
Connecting Families with Furry Friends One can hardly mention Homeward Animal Shelter without getting warm fuzzies over everything this organization does for animals in our community. You may remember them as the former Humane Society, which served our community for 51 years, with the mission of preventing the euthanization of impounded animals in the area. Since July 2014, they’ve been known as Homeward Animal Shelter with the core value of bringing pets and people together. And, they’re the only shelter in the area that rescues both cats and dogs.
No dogs in the kennels!
Monetary donations are most helpful for Homeward Shelter to care for their animals and continue their mission. To donate, volunteer, adopt or learn more, visit homewardonline. org or call 701.239.0077. 8 THE BRIDGE · JANUARY 2018
This shelter takes in over half of the stray, lost and abandoned animals that end up in local pounds. They also take in pets surrendered by their owners as well as transfers from other rescues. Once in their care, they make sure all their basic needs are met while they wait to be placed with their human companion. During the last 51 years, it is estimated that Homeward Animal Shelter has placed 35,000 cats and dogs into lifelong homes. In 2016 alone, 837 animals found families to call their own. In fact, they achieved the impossible in 2016 by adopting every single dog in their care. It is something that has never been done before in our area. And the records don’t stop there. This past October, they adopted out over 100 animals in that month alone.
MEMBER PROFILE
At the helm of it all for over 10 years is the shelter’s executive director, Nukhet Hendricks, whose passion for her work overflows when she speaks about the animals in her care. “The organization is about not just rescuing, but creating a partnership with our community, educating people about the compassionate care of animals, being an advocate for them, and making sure that families have a four-legged friend in their home, because pets are the fabric of our lives,” she said. Homeward Animal Shelter has also been a major player in emergency animal sheltering, as demonstrated in 2009 while successfully housing and caring for over 200 animals belonging to misplaced families during the flood. Volunteers are an invaluable part of the organization. Over 160 volunteers every week assist with socializing pets, assist with fundraising, adoption events and processing adoptions. They provide volunteer opportunities for individuals of all abilities and ages as young as 8. “Non-profits are created because one person cannot do what they believe in by themselves,” Hendricks said. “Donors invest and trust in us to know we will do the right thing by the animals. They invest in our organization, and we can do more together than we could alone. That’s what keeps us going. I have the best team ever, and they never cease to amaze me.” The impact of Homeward Animal Shelter is immeasurable, affecting both humans and pets alike, and it’s clear that they’re leaving a positive paw-print on the community. Who are our ambassadors? Ambassadors are some of The Chamber’s most active volunteers! Each works for a member business but acts as a trusted Chamber representative. A total of 93 individuals make up our ambassadors, serving on one of three committees. Member Relations Ambassadors The member retention arm of The Chamber, this group assists with recruitment and retention of member businesses, helping retain members through personal contact, information, encouragement and support. Last year they made 304 contacts to new members. Public Relations Ambassadors The public relations arm of The Chamber, this group provides groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremonies for new and expanding businesses and assists with special events and recruitment and retention efforts. Last year they conducted 103 member celebrations! We also have a group of Ambassadors Emeritus who have served 10 or more years on the Public Relations committee.
Operation Thank You Coming January 17 Our annual Operation Thank You event has one mission: to say THANK YOU to our members! This is our biggest ambassador-driven event of the year. Volunteers will stop by all area members on January 17 and 18 to deliver packets and say hello. When you see us come to your door, please feel free to show us around your business, meet your staff, learn what you do and share any feedback you have for our chamber. MILITARY & PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Honor Star Update We are pleased to share that from Honor Star funds last year, we recently were able to support two local military causes. A donation check was presented to NDSU’s Air Force ROTC detachment. The funds will be used for new Honor Guard equipment at future Bison football games.
NDSU Screaming Eagles, a student organization.
The Chamber’s Honor Star program is a way for businesses and individuals to say thank you to the men, women and families who have answered the call to serve our country. With an annual investment of $100, these funds help foster a community of support for the local military and their families through our Military Affairs committee.
A financial contribution was also made to purchase Christmas wreaths for the state military cemetery in Bismarck, where North Dakota veterans are buried. Over 250 businesses and individuals pledged their support to our troops by joining the program last year. As we head into January, we’re entering a new year of Honor Star membership. If you would like to renew or join this program, contact us at 218.233.1100.
Impact of the arts on the metro: Eggs & Issues recap “Arts and culture are unequivocally the single most important thing that happens in a community,” Dayna Del Val, president and CEO of The Arts Partnership, said to attendees at December’s Eggs & Issues event. Del Val presented findings of the recent Americans for the Arts Study, which looked at the economic impact that arts and cultural organizations and their audiences have on the greater community.
“When you work with us, and we work with you, we all do better,” she said. “You fill your jobs, you retain those jobs. We have to do a better job of attracting, and arts and culture are a significant way to do that.” One other point Del Val revealed was that they looked at other similar communities around the country to compare funding that supports the arts. Unfortunately, our community is at the bottom. The metro spends $235 per capita for 194,000 people. Des Moines, Iowa, sets a standard that Del Val wants to see happen here.
Some of the findings included: • The arts generated $41.6 million in spending in 2015.
We were also joined by Karin Rudd, Gate City Bank; Jodi Duncan, Flint Group; and Jack Yakowicz, Office Sign Company; who answered questions from the audience and shared why they choose to support the arts.
• Arts organizations spent $17.5 million in organizational costs, including ticket prices.
A few comments on our last Eggs & Issue event:
• $24.1 million was spent by area audiences outside of tickets.
“This subject matter was so interesting. Dayna was not just a great speaker but she presented great data that we, as a community should take into consideration.”
• The arts support 1,533 full-time-equivalent jobs here and yield $3.6 million in revenue to state and local governments. • Attendees spent $19.83 per person per event, on average. • 82% of attendees were local. Of those that were not, 13.5% stayed in a hotel here and spent 178% more on things besides their arts ticket. • Proving that it’s not C-level executives who enjoy the arts, about 40% of people attending events are under 55, and 14.4% of millennials are traveling in to see non-profit culture.

A few years ago, we had the opportunity to host our three superintendents from Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo. Since that event, thousands of students have been added to our school systems, new buildings have been built and funding mechanisms have passed. Join us to hear from three local leaders again as they provide us an update on how they are planning for the future as our thriving metro continues to attract families from all over the world.
You’ve heard talk of the F-M Diversion on the radio and read about it online; now, hear updates firsthand from the individuals most closely involved in the efforts. This largescale project has had ups and downs since talks of it first surfaced as a solution to permanent flood protection in the metro. From feasibility studies and funding setbacks to taskforces and permits, where does the project currently stand? At this event, we’ll be joined by the mayors of Fargo and Moorhead for an update. Both will have the latest scoop as outgoing and incoming chairs of the Diversion Authority, respectively. A panel of experts will also join us to share their perspectives into the past, present and future of our region’s flood protection.

The competition for talent is fierce out there. Do you know how to answer the question, “Why would I want to work for your company?”
We’ve all had great leaders who we have respected and wanted to do our best work for, and then we’ve had not-so-great leaders who lacked what it takes to motivate us to do our best.
The employee value proposition (EVP) by definition is the balance of the rewards and benefits that are received by employees in return for their performance at the workplace. Organizations generally develop an EVP to provide a consistent platform for employer brand communication and experience management.
Here, we’ll gain a broad perspective on leadership characteristics that motivate people to do their best work and stay with their employer. Backed by groundbreaking research, participants will discover potential blind spots for how employees across cultures prioritize the importance of various leadership characteristics.

Leadership class learns non-profits The Fargo Moorhead West Fargo metro has a number of non-profit organizations that serve diverse populations in our community. For many, gaining exposure to gather funds or volunteers for their organization is important. This December, the Leadership class had the opportunity to learn about 12 different non-profit organizations in the community.
on Follow us see twitter to
e up to what we ’ r ! each month ber @FMWFCham ership #FMWFlead
The day started with Scott Holdman of Dakota Medical Foundation and Impact Foundation, who gave an overview of the non-profit landscape nationally, statewide and in the FMWF metro. Following Scott’s presentation, class members participated in a nonprofit roundtable where they heard from five different non-profits about the population they serve and their importance in the community. Our roundtable leaders were Jay Thoreson, New Life Center, Than Baardson, Unseen Ministries, Jessica Thomasson, Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota, Sally Jacobson, Red River Zoo, and Kristin Krile, REACH and Dress for Success. After our roundtables, we headed over to two of our community’s non-profits, Churches United for the Homeless and Family HealthCare, where the class was able to get an insider’s look at the difference both of these organizations are making to the individuals and families they serve and the community as a whole. To finish the day, a panel moderated by Leann Wolff, Great Outcomes Consulting and including Tara Flack and Amber Blomberg, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, Eric Wilke, Oak Grove, Nancy Jordheim, Imagine Thriving, and Cody Schuler, FM Coalition for Homeless Persons, focused on how to take the class’s newfound knowledge of our local non-profits and move forward. Whether our members were interested in starting a volunteer program in their businesses or wanting to join a professional board, our panelists provided them with insight and opportunities for many ways to get involved in our local non-profits. After being exposed to so many different non-profits in our community, the participants are armed to go forth and make a difference in our community. Thank you to Dakota Medical Foundation and to Front Street Taproom for hosting this session.

YEA!: YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY
Your Time! Over the last three years, it has been great to have so many adults who are willing to work with our Young Entrepreneurs Academy students. Our program would not have the impact it does without so many community members sharing their time and talents with our class.
As we enter the new year, our
Last month, Nathan Everson from Smiling
YEA! for Leadership
Moose kicked off our series of guest speakers by coming into our classroom to talk about franchising. He provided great insight into the food industry, operating a franchise and more importantly, he had excellent advice about developing a strong set of values under which they should operate their businesses. The best part of his visit was that he gave us a little extra time to make sure all of the students’ questions were answered—we have a very inquisitive class!
class will wrap up at the Concordia College Offutt School of Business and move to Barry Hall at NDSU. For the next several weeks, our classroom will have a revolving door with guest speakers, mentors and graphic designers coming in to work with the students.
In December, some of our past
and current YEA! students went to the North Dakota Association of Student Council’s state leadership conference in Bismarck and had the opportunity to talk about their experiences in our program to students from across the state of North Dakota. Jack Machacek, Connor Dahlvang and Joanna Lin represented their schools and

fielding questions from the audience. They spoke about the impact our volunteer instructor, mentors, speakers and field trip hosts had on them, what they took away from YEA! and how their experience in the program will benefit them in the future.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
“Freedom Resource Center for Independent Living is a disability rights organization. Our mission is to provide services that increase independence for people with disabilities. In 1989, Freedom Resource Center was formed by a few individuals from the Fargo-Moorhead area and secured the necessary status as a non-profit. The term ‘center for independent living’ means a consumer controlled, community based, cross disability, nonresidential private nonprofit agency that is designed and operated within a local community by individuals with disabilities and provides an array of independent living services. The philosophy of independent centers is that people with disabilities have the same rights, options and choices as anyone else. Freedom Resource Center’s service area is 10 southeast counties in North Dakota and 11 counties in west central Minnesota.”
— Nate Aalgaard
Executive Director
What makes your organization unique? We serve people with any disability, at any age. We do not require any proof of income or medical verification and the services are free. A majority of staff, board of directors, and management are people with disabilities.
What initiatives are you focusing on? Since passing of the ADA in 1990, there have been some strides made over the last almost three decades, but issues remain most noticeably accessibility. Our Civil and Human Rights Task force is very active in surveying businesses to learn how well they meet the standards required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Survey results are reported in four areas: Approach, Entry, Accommodations and Restrooms
Total employees: 19 Year founded: 1989
What do you like most about doing business here? We pride ourselves in giving individuals choices. Here in the area, we have the privilege of having those choices. The metro area is still small enough to enjoy but large enough to be given lots of choices.
What is one thing you most want others to know about you? We want to be the resource to help people with disabilities be integrated, valued members of the community. We have the resources to help individuals and businesses make that happen.
What’s your best business tip? Spending power of
Americans with disability: $175 billion in discretionary spending, diners with disabilities would spend $35 billion in restaurants and 75% of people with disabilities eat out at restaurants at least once a week. Think accessible.
