a note from the

PRESIDENT Our mayors agree: We need to work as a metro! In last month’s Bridge, I spoke about our thenupcoming State of the Cities event and the excitement over having two new mayors join the panel. My message focused on embracing a metro mentality. I pointed out that for our region to prosper, decisions must happen with a regional approach to the issues and challenges we face as a growing community. Most of these don’t just affect one city; they affect us all. Now with the event successfully just past, I am thrilled to say that these expectations were firmly met. For the first time, all four mayors individually and collectively embrace the idea of working together. It’s high time our elected officials and business leaders approach all issues with a regional mindset. While our mayors were elected to serve their particular communities—as they should, and do—it remains extremely important to serve our collective community. It was mentioned among our 650+ attendees how refreshing it was to hear this collaborative spirit come from the panel and their vision to build a stronger community. Some questions were posed as to exactly how they would follow through.

We at The Chamber commend these leaders for their forward thinking, and we challenge them to adopt a process of working together for one community, for one metro. We want to see everyone at the table when it comes to community discussions. That is the only way we will see our region succeed as an economic engine, a thriving hub, a destination, and hopefully the envy of other communities. We must stay dedicated to attracting and retaining talent to solve our workforce gap. We must see through permanent flood protection. We’re confident these things will happen. We’ve just got to work together!

EGGS & ISSUES explained the timeliness of the project noting that the original Plan A plan’s permit was denied; however recently, Plan B, the revised plan, was just approved by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Due to the numerous delays and plan changes, the cost of the project has increased $550 million since 2015. In order to secure this funding, there is a plan for an additional ask of $300 million federally as well as $300 million from the State of ND. With this ask, the state would be making a total contribution of $870 million. There will also be a $86 million ask from the State of MN.

An update on the FM Diversion: Eggs & Issues recap At January’s Eggs & Issues, we heard updates on the FM Diversion from a panel of local leaders closely involved with the project. Tom Dawson, Dawson Insurance, and chair of The Chamber’s Business Leaders Taskforce for Permanent Flood Protection, opened with an overview of what our taskforce is and does.

#FMWFEggs

Jason Benson, Cass County engineer, was our first panelist who took the stage to discuss the Governors’ Task Force, led by MN Governor Dayton and ND Governor Burgum, with 16 members “To develop design principles and conceptlevel engineering solutions to achieve balanced flood risk management for the Fargo-Moorhead region.”

6  THE BRIDGE  •  FEBRUARY 2019

With the Minnesota DNR finally granting the project a permit just late last year, Benson discussed Plan B, which is the one plan option that was deemed to be the best and only viable option to achieving 100-year flood protection for our region. We learned the current status of the project, plans looking ahead and that funding is the one last thing to be figured out before the work begins. Mayor Tim Mahoney, Fargo, who has long been a vocal champion of the Diversion, commented on the great need for this project. He spoke to the extensive work that has gone into this project and that funding is one of our last hurdles to the completion of this project. Mahoney

It is vital that individuals voice their support for the project and funding requests during this last step in the project. The FMWF Chamber will be sure to provide updates regarding the progress of the funding requests and alert members of opportunities to voice support for the funding of this imperative project. In addition to presentations from Benson and Mahoney, Mayor Bernie Dardis, West Fargo, and Mayor Johnathan Judd, Moorhead, also shared comments about why they support the project and their own experience with flooding in the past. “We all have a role to play in our communities to make sure we get past the goal for this project… We have to look at the future,” Judd said. “We are one event away from a major problem,” Dardis added. “I would encourage all of you and our neighbors to work on this as diligently as we can.”

The State of ND’s Workforce Tony Grindberg

A Hard Look at Behavioral and Mental Health

Michelle Kommer

VP of Workforce Affairs, NDSCS & Fargo Commissioner

ND Commerce Commissioner

This Eggs & Issues event will bring together two leaders to discuss one of our state’s most pressing issues – the ability to develop, recruit and retain a qualified workforce. With an estimated 30,000 job openings and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation, North Dakota’s ability to address this challenge will determine the future prosperity and success the business community in North Dakota, with significant effect on the health of our communities, and our economy as a whole. Kommer will share the report of recommendations developed by the Workforce Development Council—and how these recommendations connect with the governor’s budget, including legislative progress. Grindberg will share legislative perspectives as well as workforce priorities for the region.

At our recent State of the Cities event, Chamber members voted behavioral and mental health the second biggest challenge facing our community. This month at Eggs & Issues, we will bring in speakers to discuss behavioral and mental health and their effect on businesses. These topics have become a rising concern across all industries and fields. Here, a panel of experts will help us better understand the challenge we face as employers and as a community, as well as learn about helpful resources accessible within our region.

MEMBER PROFILE Ronald McDonald House Charities

(RMHC) of the Red River Valley is the only organization of its kind in the

community. Their mission is to support families whose children are receiving

medical care in the area by providing

home-like comfort, support and care. The organization was born out of need— a need for families to be close to their sick child without having to sleep on the floor, in their car or other less than desirable places. They provide not just a comfortable bed, but an ear to listen, a home-cooked meal, and a support system where families can connect with each other. To meet the needs of families in the FargoMoorhead area, the first Fargo Ronald McDonald House was opened in 1982 in north Fargo. In 2005, a second Fargo Ronald McDonald House was opened in south Fargo in response to increased demand.

14  THE BRIDGE  •  FEBRUARY 2019

With the need to address hospital growth and outgrowing family space, a new Ronald McDonald House opened in May 2018 to serve as an expansion and replacement of the two former houses near the new Sanford hospital. With the unwavering support of a RMHC founding partner, Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Red River Valley fundraised for a 17-guest room, 30,000 square foot facility. The new facility is located at 4757 Agassiz Crossing South in Fargo and has a large, fully stocked ADA family kitchen; a volunteer kitchen; private bathrooms for each bedroom; living rooms/community spaces; laundry facilities; playroom; game room; outside playground area; administrative space; and capacity to expand to 24 bedrooms. RMHC is excited to add a Family Room program with Essentia Health in their new NICU space expected to open in the fall of 2019. This will offer a respite room for families as they are by their baby’s side and will be the first Ronald McDonald Family Room in the Dakotas. In 2018, RMHC served 357 families. Jill Christopher, executive director said, “Our goal is to limit stress by helping families stay near each other and to the care their children need as they encounter one of life’s most difficult situations. We strive to provide secure and home-like accommodation—a place where additional strength and stability is received from a comfortable room, home-

cooked meals, amenities from home and connections with other families in similar situations.” In addition to supporting the hospital community, RMHC provides volunteer opportunities for hundreds of community members a year. This includes teambuilding like maintenance work or making a meal, youth opportunities like coloring ornaments or making blankets. Plus, their Heartwarmer program is geared toward folks who have left the paid, working world. “Heartwarmer volunteers are more extensively trained to cover the house so staff members can attend trainings and have lunch breaks,” Christopher explained. “We are excited to have such talented community members dedicate weekly time to our organization.” This year’s People’s Choice organization puts its people first—their staff, volunteers, partners and families, by focusing on their core values of heart, integrity, exceptional service, partnership, and team.

Foundation for Consultative Selling

The Culture of Meeting

When customers have completed 70% of the buying process without engaging with a single person and can complete many purchases online without ever interacting with a sales person, traditional, transactional sales tactics simply no longer work. High-performing sales people are doing something that the internet cannot: building relationships.

How many meetings are truly effective? And how many meetings are too long, get hijacked, leave people thinking “why was I here?” or seem to be the same meeting over and over? The price of bad meetings is beyond financial. Consider the cultural cost of dissatisfied, unproductive employees, plus the costs of time wasted or failing to meet the expectations of clients or partners due to a bad meeting.

New and seasoned salespeople will learn the fundamentals of a consultative selling approach that creates win-win outcomes for their organizations and customers. This session will offer an overview of consultative selling and then dive deeper into vital sales skills like managing time effectively, focusing on priorities, and creating a compelling personal vision.

Before your next meeting, learn how to influence a meeting’s success when you’re leading or participating. With deliberate planning and strategies, every meeting is an effective communication tool to engage a group in a specific dialogue and directed outcome. Learn to make your face-to-face meetings effective every time you and your organization bring people together to get work done.

Thank you to Andrea Hochalter, Beyond Facilitation, for talking to January’s Business Training attendees about the facilitative leadership style, engaging and inspiring employees and the generational shift.

Rachel rocks the arena at January Women Connect

In a setting more akin to a headlining concert in a sold-out arena with a national name drawing literally thousands, national best-selling author and influencer Rachel Hollis shook up the typical Chamber event last month, shattering all event records and expectations. We are still blown away by the incredible response and outcome of our fifth annual Women Connect anniversary event. Hollis is the author of the book, Girl, Wash Your Face, and in front of nearly 4,000 women at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex, she shared highlights and takeaways from her life as a working mom. That is, in between random arena eruptions of dance parties set to the tune of Beyonce’s “Run the World.”

“We’re always looking for the quick fix. You’re never going to want to do the hard thing. You have to make yourself do the thing you don’t want to do.”

“That thing in your heart is a what if. It’s your heart begging your head to get out of the way.”

Hollis covered many topics that hit home with attendees, from the importance of moving, connecting, believing in yourself, and not comparing yourself to others. She challenged the women to be their authentic selves and reminded attendees that they have the power to transform their lives. She gave permission and motivation to be more, to go after the “what ifs.” “The difference between success in any area of your life is choosing what you want most versus what you want right now,” was just one of her nuggets of wisdom. The event also served as a celebration of the Women Connect program, and several former and current committee members took the stage to share highlights. We want to give a special shout-out and thank you to Tonya Stende, Carrie Carney and Katie Hutton, for their work as volunteers and on stage. We couldn’t have pulled off this wildly successful event without the dedication of our committee, events staff, volunteers and sponsors (especially Essentia Health for presenting sponsor!). We can’t say thank you enough! Through our attendees, we collected donations of 600 books for Lutheran Social Services and 540 new winter items for PATH ND.

It’s Complicated: Leading Yourself through a Relationship with Change

Tuesday, March 26

Work-Life Fusion

Kimberly Busch

Dana Haagenson

Regional Director of Sales Aimbridge Hospitality

HR and Accounting Instructor Minnesota State Community and Technical College

Change is the only constant in life. How many times have we heard that? But it’s so hard! We go through these changes at home or work and sometimes we end up hurting ourselves, our companies, and the ones we care about because we don’t know how to get through it or help each other. Sometimes as a solution, we hear “suck it up and deal with it,” but the truth is, it’s complicated. People feel, think, and act in different ways going though transitions. By understanding where you are in the relationship with change, you can be aware of how to navigate through it by managing feelings, leading yourself, and inspiring others to follow.

Should we feel guilty when we check work email during family time? Are we cheating our company when we text our kids during the workday? With technology that connects all aspects of our lives and different expectations from multiple generations in the workplace, it is harder than ever to separate our personal and professional lives and achieve the balance we’ve all been striving for. Perhaps we should stop trying to achieve perfect balance and strive for a healthy fusion instead. In this session, we’ll introduce the concept of work-life fusion and discuss practical ways to find and maintain the right fusion in your life.

Enthusiasm and a spirit of collaboration exuded from the 2019 State of the Cities stage, where our region’s four mayors gathered to share updates from their cities. With two newly elected mayors joining the panel for the first time, attendees got the hear how all our leaders are working for the betterment of our metro, what growth they’ve seen, and what their vision is for the future. Xcel Energy’s Mark Nisbet and WDAY’s Jay Thomas served as moderators.

Dilworth

Moorhead

Beginning with Dilworth, crowd favorite Chad Olson talked about the expanded businesses and developments in the city. In 2018, Dilworth named ALDI the Star Business of the Year, “because they embody the idea that when one city succeeds, all cities succeed.” Olson referenced a new development called Dilworth Commons, which completed construction in 2018 and offers new amenities for the city. “2018 was a fantastic and successful year for Dilworth. I believe it’s important to reiterate that the success of the city of Dilworth contributes to the overall success of the FM area,” he said.

Only having three full days completed as mayor of Moorhead, Johnathan Judd brought laughs and excitement. His theme? Moorhead is growing!

PRESENTING SPONSOR

In a city with a population of 43,000, some of Judd’s updates included the Cullen hockey center as a city asset, the newly completed joint law enforcement center, the 21st Street underpass, the momentum of downtown and changes to the corridor. (He also said to watch for the term “NoMo,” as in north Moorhead.) He shared that Moorhead achieved the Minnesota GreenStep 2 designation for its sustainability efforts, and is working to become a GreenStep 3 community in 2019. Judd has a vision to make Moorhead a cultural center. “We want Moorhead to be on the map for being the place to be when it comes to culture,” he said. Looking to the future, Judd said we need to look holistically at our neighborhoods, adapt to changing dynamics and economics, and consider not only who we are, but also who we want to become.

Fargo In Fargo, Mayor Tim Mahoney celebrated the completion of the new city hall, and says it will be future-focused and a game-changer. Other recent city developments include the expansion of the water treatment plant and police headquarters. Construction permits have seen growth, and downtown’s Block 9 is in full swing. He gave a shout-out to Del Rae Williams for her work with the Minnesota DNR and finally receiving a permit for the FM Diversion, and offered a look at what’s next for our region’s flood protection.

West Fargo Finally on the westernmost edge of the panel was longtime businessman but new mayor Bernie Dardis, who referenced his city’s incredible growth (which ended 2018 at 37,730). He shared that housing has finally leveled out, and in 2018, the city worked with three developers to increase affordable housing options, one of the pillars that aligns with the city’s new comprehensive plan, dubbed West Fargo 2.0. The West Fargo school district is the fastest-growing district in the state, with the addition of about 500 new students per year. Last year saw the opening two new schools, and citizens passed a $106.9 million bond referendum to help improve current facilities and build even more. The city’s departments are also growing, and Dardis recognized the fire department, which has

Mahoney mentioned various development opportunities in Fargo, plus the need for a performing arts center. Looking ahead, he says Fargo plans to focus on the new downtown city plaza, Red River Valley water supply project, and his hopes to see efforts in workforce, including having internships in every sector and retaining young professionals. A particular bright spot? Social services is seeing success with report of a 50% decrease in opioid prescriptions! Finally, Mahoney offered a challenge to his fellow mayors and members of the audience to harness our energy and become an EEME epicenter of the upper Midwest (EEME standing for educational, entertainment, medical and economic). “We do great things together, but together we can do far more!”

improved efficiency and turned volunteers into part-time city employees. A brand-new position was also created in the police department with the hire of the first cultural liaison officer. He referenced the work that is being done on Sheyenne Street and downtown, and encouraged attendees to take a drive through and see all that is going on. Several more developments are planned in West Fargo, including the destination Lights at Sheyenne 32. One exciting announcement is that nationally, West Fargo was chosen as the site for the Habitat for Humanity blitz build in 2019, where three new homes will be built in 10 days in one neighborhood. More planning meetings will be held this month with community members invited, and many events, facility upgrades and excitement is in the future. Dardis closed with a call for engagement and input from our community members and businesses to keep our forward momentum and solve our region’s challenges.

Live Poll Results We also conducted live audience polls to find out where they sit on the issues. We learned that a majority (41%) felt that workforce was our region’s biggest issue, followed by behavioral and mental health, and flood protection. Most also felt that North Dakota’s blue laws should be repealed. Here are the official results. Which of these do you see as the biggest challenge impacting our community?

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

“JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our strength lies in our exclusive focus and singular influence on the worldwide effort to end T1D. Locally, we host an annual walk and expo event in September at the Scheels Arena to raise money for Type 1 Diabetes research and advocacy efforts for regulation favorable to medical research and that makes it easier to market new medical devices.“

—Danelle Johnson

T1D Mom and Volunteer Corporate Fundraising Chair

About the disease Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. And, at present, there is no cure. In T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone the body needs to get energy from food. This means a process your body does naturally and automatically becomes something that now requires your daily attention and manual intervention. If you have T1D, you must constantly monitor your blood-sugar level, inject or infuse insulin

through a pump, and carefully balance these insulin doses with your eating and activity throughout the day and night. However, insulin is not a cure for diabetes. Even with the most vigilant disease management, a significant portion of your day will be spent with either high or low blood-sugar levels. These fluctuations place people with T1D at risk for potentially life-threatening hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic episodes as well as devastating longterm complications such as kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, blindness and amputation.

Last September was our 5th Annual Walk for our region which is North Dakota, South Dakota and Northern Minnesota

JDRF One Walk Fargo 2018 raised $113,533 with 54 teams (21 of which were new teams)

JDRF One Walk Fargo 2017 raised $98,914 with 43 teams

What makes your organization unique? JDRF doesn’t have members and due to health privacy laws, the only way we learn about someone diagnosed with T1D is when they seek out JDRF on their own. Most of our volunteers are either T1Ds themselves or have a loved one that lives with T1D. When people learn what T1D is, and how it must be managed day in and day out for the individual to survive, they want to make a difference by helping educate, advocate and raise money for a cure. We have found fast friends and strong support networks among so many other families that face this disease every day for which there are physical, emotional and financial burdens.

Are there any initiatives you’re focusing on right now? JDRF works every day to change the reality of this disease for millions of people—and to prevent anyone else from ever knowing it—by funding research, advocating for government support of research and new therapies, ensuring new therapies come to market and connecting and engaging the T1D community. We’ve funded more than $2 billion in research to date and made significant progress in understanding and fighting the disease.

What’s in a name? A bit of “JDRF” history JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and

became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day.

What is one thing you most others to know about you? I am just a regular mom that is determined to make a difference in the fight to cure this disease for our daughter, and all the other people that have been diagnosed with T1D.

What do you like most about being a member of The Chamber? Being able to network with people in the community that are always interested in learning more and energized by making a difference. Also by letting them know the JDRF organization is active in our regional community. Sharing our stories, letting people know we need their help, letting them know we are diagnosing many individuals right here in our region that are their family members, neighbors, friends or co-workers.

Fact Our daughter’s last 90-day supply of insulin had a retail price of $3,946.99. This is one of 12 prescriptions that are necessary for her to manage this disease between insulin, pump, supplies, continuous glucose monitors, test strips, lancets, lancing devices, etc. That is not a typo. We need to work to make these prescriptions affordable and accessible. T1Ds are rarely helped with medical expenses yet, they or their families incur large outof-pocket maximums for medical care every single year. —Danelle Johnson   FMWFCHAMBER.COM  •  23

LEADERSHIP

Leadership class learns community safety Throughout this year’s Leadership class, we have focused on the different sectors of the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo business community. January’s Leadership session shifted focus onto community safety. The class started the day at the State of the Cities event. Immediately following, they had a one-onone meeting with the mayors to ask questions about leadership and go in-depth about our community before taking the class through a training simulation similar to what the citizen’s Police Academy participants do. After we wrapped up our time at the Holiday Inn, we traveled to the Fargo Fire Department Station #1 for a tour and to learn about the needs our Fire Departments have from Chief Dirksen. We spent the rest of our day at the new Moorhead Law Enforcement Center where Lieutenant Chris Carey and Lieutenant Brad Penas (both graduates of the LFMWF program!) started our time there by providing the class with tours of the new facility. Following the tours, Lieutenant Carey spoke about his personal leadership vision and change management in law enforcement.

“My favorite session to date. It really expanded my knowledge of my community and increased my feeling of connection to it.”
