PRESIDENT’S LETTER
A note from the President Thank you, and congratulations to our entire business community. Last month we celebrated with our members at the annual ChamberChoice Awards Luncheon and were able to honor the hard work, dedication, innovation, resiliency and energy of our local businesses. In this Bridge you will have the opportunity to learn more about this year’s award winners, but I want to also give a shoutout to all of our nominees, candidates and finalists. Every year we are blown away by the community response to nominating so many great businesses across our region for an award, and are extremely humbled by the amount of effort put into applying for these awards. I am continually shocked at how this community shows up for one another, and how truly dedicated the people here are to being connected to and ingrained in this community. I hope you all sincerely enjoyed the afternoon celebrating together and are proud of your accomplishments in business and in our community. I would also like to give a special congratulations to the recent grads of the 2021-22 Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo class. 2022 CHAMBERCHOICE AWARDS
The
humble beginnings of this year’s Small Business of the Year started on a Saturday in 2017, after Legacy Plumbing’s two founders realized a shared vision to build a company that puts people first and serves its community. This is what they call the “Legacy way.”
PLUMBING
With a goal that continues to this day, Legacy Plumbing is working to revolutionize the industry by developing top-trained technicians who deliver outstanding workmanship, world-class customer service, and create the best plumbing experience in town. The company started in the third stall of one of the founders’ own garage, and was followed by knocking on doors to introduce the new company in town. Today, it has a team of 23 on staff and specializes in 24-hour service, repair, remodel, and new construction plumbing.
Supporting people also extends to the larger community. Legacy Plumbing is intentional about picking its partners, and supports local youth sports teams, serves on the Impact Committee for Bio Girls, and are Chamber ambassadors. Legacy Plumbing’s strong community relationships led to the creation of a new plumbing construction division, and it is working on opening an HVAC division.
PLUMBING
Co-owner Rob Mesteth says Legacy Plumbing promises to get up every day to build a legacy through service, one team, one customer, and one neighborhood at a time, the Legacy way.
Like many other businesses, Legacy Plumbing faced supply chain issues and price increases in 2021. It came out the other side by taking risks to pre-buy, stock up, and secure other suppliers. The company is built on a culture of learning, support, and shared expertise, shaped by cofounders Rob Mesteth and Brad Kosidowski. The core values that guide the team are: Humble Beginnings, The Legacy Way, Sacrifice, Conflict Resolution, Excellence in the Ordinary, Team, and Training and Education. Legacy Plumbing organically instills “The Legacy Way” in its employees every day by living and breathing these values. The team makes sacrifices together and celebrates its successes together. And, a monthly internal “Top Banana” award is given to an employee who exemplifies excellence by being a team player and displaying a positive attitude. To address the workforce shortage, the company hired many young apprentices and ensured their success by investing in a fulltime trainer to pass down the skills of the trade to the next generation. Following its mission to build better lives, they implemented a performance-based compensation plan so its team can achieve their dreams.

A
company with a long history in the region, TrueNorth Steel’s story starts in 1945 when Ole Rommesmo, a Norwegian immigrant, launched the business with modest resources and a vision to help communities build with the strength of steel. It is known as a manufacturer of steelbased construction and storage product solutions for a variety of industries, from construction and architecture to stormwater management, energy, and agriculture. In 2004, Dan Kadrmas joined the company as president and still sits at the helm. The business was built on principles important to Ole. Personal responsibility, outcome focus, team player attitude, positive, trust, and commitment, are at the heart of the driving values today. On both a quarterly and annual basis, TrueNorth Steel recognizes employees who exhibit these values through the company’s internal leadership program called Game Changer. So far, 685 employees have graduated from the program. Knowing the importance of developing a talent pipeline locally, TrueNorth Steel joined the Ignite FMWF initiative to highlight the benefits of a career in the trades. It also partnered with the F5 Project to help reduce the stigma of employing people establishing their lives after incarceration.
mirrors the growth of the community. In the past seven years, it has increased revenue significantly and grew employees by 33%. Leadership credits this to a culture of resilience and diligence through change management. As just one example, the company converted its Casper, Wyoming, plant to manufacture storage tanks to better serve the emerging shale oil market, which allowed its West Fargo location to add bridge fabrication to its capacity. TrueNorth Steel is always looking at new, innovative solutions. Many of its systems hold proprietary trademarks. Another differentiator is its in-house transportation logistics, drafting, and engineering services. In 2021, the company acquired Texasbased Beck Steel, which brought on 300,000 square feet of additional manufacturing space in West Fargo. Recent notable construction projects include work for Google, Disney, Amazon, and Bayer Monsanto. And, it’s nearing completion of a steel project for the Sacramento, California, courthouse. Locally, it shaped the Fargo skyline with its work on Block 9 and Sanford’s medical center. This innovation has allowed TrueNorth Steel to truly thrive, stand the test of time, and prove its place as this year’s reigning Business of the Year.
True community supporters, it partners with area organizations to give back, including the United Way, Great Plains Food Bank, Salvation Army, and more. TrueNorth Steel also steps up to the public policy plate. In 2018, company leadership visited the White House to discuss tax reform and later hosted the Secretary of Commerce in Fargo to discuss the impacts of steel tariffs. Throughout Dan’s tenure, TrueNorth Steel has navigated through the 2008 recession, volatile markets, supply chain and workforce issues, and a pandemic. Despite this, it continues to grow, and at a pace that

the belief that every child deserves a chance to have a happy and safe childhood, the Red River Children’s Advocacy Center is helping so many children in our community with that very goal. In 2021 alone, the center served over 700 children referred to them through allegations of sexual or physical abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Staff there worked every day to provide hope and healing through interviews and mental health, medical, and victim advocacy services. Non-offending caregivers are connected with a family advocate and resources to support the child. A core function of the center is to use a trained and trauma-informed interviewer so that the child only has to tell their story once. Then, a team of medical professionals, law enforcement, prosecution, child protective services, victim advocacy and more, come together to decide how to best help the child. This means a vulnerable child doesn’t have to rehash their trauma multiple times.
The agency recognizes the toll chronic exposure to child abuse has on staff, so it made great efforts to provide training, support, and tools, to help the helpers of the community. To prevent children from being abused in the first place, it has partnered with Dakota Medical Foundation to build curriculum that will bring child sexual abuse prevention education to every corner of the community. It also hosts an annual child maltreatment conference, provides donations of clothing, toys, and blankets to those served, and participates in numerous local events. Thanks to the caring work of this area nonprofit, many children in our community have the chance at living the life they’ve always deserved.
This sharing of expertise and resources is called the multidisciplinary team and is at the heart of the work of the Red River Children’s Advocacy Center. The center hosts orientations for new members of their partner agencies to share why their approach is best for both victims and for creating further safety for our community. The Red River Children’s Advocacy Center has added a mental health team that is dedicated to providing free assessments and evidencebased therapies that are otherwise not available in the community. Even prior to the pandemic, it started the journey to removing the barriers of telehealth services, and since has trained other agencies nationwide to do the same. It is the only local agency providing group treatment for youth struggling with problematic sexual behavior, and recently trained to expand the age group served with the model. It also expanded programming by adding a full-time, in-house family advocate to offer support to families before they even step foot in their doors.

In
a time when workforce issues affect so many, business are asking how to find the best talent, and employees are looking for a place they can feel valued. Construction Engineers seems to have both figured out, as their culture of support and education has earned them this year’s Young Professionals Best Place to Work designation. Founded in 1978, Construction Engineers is a general contractor that provides construction management and design-build services in North Dakota and northern Minnesota. Noting that many in the workforce are close to retirement, it is home-growing its own talent. Of the company’s 70 total employees, exactly half are young professionals. And those young employees are able to develop their professional skills, grow their network, and engage in the community thanks to the benefits offered by this area employer.
One of the company’s core values is supporting the cities in which it does business. This year, it committed $100,000 to the Career Impact Academy in Grand Forks. During covid, Construction Engineers donated to local non-profits instead of giving holiday gifts to business partners by asking employees for nominations of organizations in need. So far, it has given more than $25,000. Beyond that, employees can also submit requests for support for causes or events that need funding through a program called Construction Engineers Cares, with leadership fulfilling most. The company’s owners, Scott Kringstad and Jeff Melgaard, lead by example in a culture that embraces positivity, teamwork, and success. In an industry that is booming, and even with career opportunities in abundance, it’s clear that Construction Engineers proves its place as a Best Place to Work for young professionals.
Construction Engineers continuously supports young professionals through continuing education. In 2021, it invested more than $200,000 to start its own Registered Apprenticeship program. This in-house training grows new young professionals in the carpentry trade and comes with increased pay, recognition, and credibility. The company also offers an Educational Reimbursement program that financially supports employees continuing their education through advanced degrees or professional development. Quarterly management meetings brings the team together to learn new communication and supervisory skills. Four Construction Engineers employees have been recognized by Prairie Business Magazine’s 40 Under 40 list. Every year, the company nominates one of its hard-working young professionals, with the belief that it’s important to cultivate an environment that is conducive to retaining young staff. Several are also members of The Chamber’s Young Professionals Network. Construction Engineers offers one of the highest 401(k) matches in the construction industry and region, and fun company events for employees and their families.

2022 CHAMBERCHOICE AWARDS
The
Chamber’s Emerging Business of the Year Award is all about recognizing a new business in the area that is seeing incredible success with less than three years under their belt. And this year’s winner, The Center for Plastic Surgery, is a shining example of how a small business based on the principles of caring for others, providing outstanding experiences, and investing in state-of-the-art technologies can thrive. Its founder, Dr. Nicholas Adams, generated the idea in late 2019. Living in Arizona at the time, he realized the need in his home state for a new practice based on contemporary techniques and top-notch customer service. He decided to take the leap and lay down roots with his family here to build his dream. Launching a business in the midst of a pandemic proved to be no problem for Adams, who started with just one employee in a shared clinic and grew the practice to a team of nine. In just one year, The Center for Plastic Surgery established itself as the region’s only plastic surgery clinic and med spa run by a board-certified surgeon, exceeded revenue projections, outgrew its building, and positively impacted the lives of hundreds of patients in the tri-state area.
for both staff and clients and creating a personalized approach. The Center for Plastic Surgery staff treats everyone with the utmost respect, privacy, and concern. Adams even gives each patient his personal phone number so they can call anytime. Their big dreams don’t stop here. Adams said his team is motived to not only become the premier destination for plastic surgery and aesthetic services in the region, but to be one of the bestregarded destinations in the entire nation. The Center for Plastic Surgery is proof that despite the odds, with drive and determination, it is possible to start anew and find success, as Adams now cares for the region where he grew up.
While the team wasn’t sure if people would be ready for in-person appointments for non-essential services, they were floored at the reception from the community once doors were opened. Dr. Adams now has a four-month waiting list. The Center for Plastic Surgery does more than the traditional services for the face and body. It also offers reconstructive and hand surgeries, injectables, laser, body contouring, facials, and skincare. Adams attributes success to three factors: being a steward for the community and supporting those in need by giving back; providing innovative techniques and exceptional experiences for guests; and training the team so well that they could work anywhere else but treating them so well that they don’t want to. It’s clear that Adams has established a new standard for plastic surgery in the community by going above and beyond

Considering
the challenges so many businesses have faced lately, it is a feat to simply have survived, but Noridian Healthcare Solutions has demonstrated going beyond that and truly thriving. This is likely due to its culture of being adaptable and resilient. Noridian’s mission is to enable access to medical care, eliminate barriers, and elevate people. It does this by developing solutions for federal, state and commercial health care programs through a suite of offerings, including claims processing, medical review, and contact center and provider administrative services. Values of constant innovation, service excellence, responsible stewardship, integrity, and effective collaboration are demonstrated every day by its employees and guides how the business is operated.
Another testament to Noridian’s resiliency is that when the company began in 1966, it was one of over 100 companies providing Medicare administrative services. As Medicare evolved, Noridian established a Medicare Administrative Coordinator to serve as a primary operational contact between Medicare and providers. Today, it is just one of eight still working with the Medicare program. Despite all the challenges the pandemic brought, Noridian continued to grow – adding about 100 employees in two years. Those employees have increased engagement, pride in the company, and it’s seen an improved culture index. Through it all, Noridian ensures peace of mind by always putting people and our community first.
Noridian is anchored in purpose and its work is laser focused on the people behind the transactions: patients, providers, and partners. When the pandemic began, Noridian had a leg up as nearly half of its staff already worked from home. In under three days, the rest of the team was moved to home offices, and business never stopped. During the pandemic, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services relied on Noridian to get funding for rural providers. Noridian set up an advance payment system to ensure that these providers could remain open and continue to serve their communities. Several of them said that without the advance payment, they may have had to close their doors. Noridian was also able to use its call center services to assist the North Dakota Department of Public Health. The company used its already-trained and operational call center as a large-scale COVID-19 hotline to answer residents’ questions. Many even stepped up by answering more than covid questions and connected callers to support for housing assistance and worker’s compensation. The call center worked so well that the contract was extended through this year. And, the state gave Noridian the nickname of “hotline heroes.” As of mid-February 2021, their staff responded to over 105,000 calls.

Knowing
that not every child has the same opportunities as others, TNT Kid’s Fitness in Fargo was founded upon the mission of unlocking potential through movement for individuals of all abilities. It started in summer 2006 when a small group of people designed an inclusive gymnastics space to provide programming and physical activity for children with special needs alongside competitive athletes. The non-profit’s values are Balance, Education, Loyalty, Innovation, Equality, Versatility, and Equality. Together, this stands for Believe. And you had better believe that the team at TNT Kid’s Fitness is breaking down barriers, solving challenges through innovative solutions, and making a difference in the lives of so many families. Throughout its history, the team at TNT has developed a wide range of special needs curriculum, professional development, adult fitness and occupational therapy programs, and community partnerships to enhance learning for all abilities. Its values are instilled in team members through knowing that everyone is an influencer. The organization has partnered with Essentia Health for 10 years to serve children 0-5 years old, representing the most critical years of a child’s life. Working with its pediatric health services helps kids grow physically, cognitively, and emotionally.
to workforce vocation pathway to address labor shortages and support special needs individuals working in our communities. TNT is using focus groups across the state to test the ABLE education and P.E. curriculum, and it’s being executed in 10 public school settings. In 2021, it held the inaugural ABLE Games, the region’s first all-inclusive test of functional fitness with athletes celebrating all abilities. It drew 75 teams, 150 athletes, over 200 volunteers, and hundreds of spectators. When the pandemic hit and schools went virtual, the TNT team redesigned its programming from daytime gymnastics to active education using a “think tank” approach. It created a full school day to serve 50 children, held Zoom classes with 50 teachers, reworked its facility, and strengthened its partnership with local schools. Reaching well beyond our own community, a video of a TNT wheelchair-bound child laughing in delight on a trampoline with his trainer went viral, made national news, and garnered over 4 million views, perfectly illustrating the impact of TNT’s programs. Establishing itself as a community asset and homegrown treasure, TNT Kid’s Fitness certainly earned its pick as the 2022 People’s Choice Award, and will continue to positively impact generations to come.
TNT’s Explorer Academy is North Dakota’s first K-8 special education day school with project-based STEAM and motor program opportunities.
