PRESIDENT’S LETTER

A note from the President We are honored to dedicate this month’s Bridge to the great men, women and families of our military. I was raised to have a great appreciation for the men and women who served in the past and continue to serve to protect our freedom and liberties. My grandfather served in WWII on a transport ship shuttling supplies back and forth from the U.S. to Europe, and his brother served in the Normandy invasion. I recall many stories that they would tell us about extreme conditions, moments of terror and devastating loss, and yet they would say that they would do it all over again. We have thousands of men and women who courageously volunteer to protect and fight for our honor. We are so blessed to not only live in a country with dedicated people like these, but we also have the good fortune of having so many of these individuals in our community. My husband and I have taught our children that whenever they see someone in uniform to thank them for their service, because we know that we are able to be together as a family because they are making the sacrifice that often takes them away from theirs. Please enjoy this edition of The Bridge, and we will see you this August at our annual Military Appreciation Night at the RedHawks!

My role enables me to speak with many business owners and employees who have served or currently serve in the military. We often reminisce about some of our shared experiences and things we appreciate. I admire those organizations that remain dedicated to working with our military to support, engage and employ these dedicated and motivated individuals. Throughout the time I served, my eyes were continually open to different cultures, people and experiences. Even though I have moved on career-wise, I will always have an affinity and loyalty to my brothers and sisters that I served with. Every year during the Chamber’s Military Appreciation Night I am reminded of the sacrifices others have made to include families and communities.

Sometimes

it’s hard to believe this is me, and now I see our daughters following (and soon our son) and I think about how it all started.

grew up watching my mom go to and from Guard. I used to love ironing her uniforms, polishing her boots and rushing to get a hug when she got home and being in awe seeing her in uniform. We also grew up hearing awesome stories from my mom, dad and grandfathers about their times in the military. Our family has a long history of service from the War of 1812 to Pearl Harbor, Normandy Beach, Korea and Vietnam. They interested me when I was little, but I honestly never thought about joining the military. I was ending my sophomore year of high school and was getting nervous about what I was going to do after high school. I had no solid plan outside of college. Everything became clear when we went to my mom’s retirement. I saw how many people showed up to wish her well. The sense of family and friendship. The look of pride on everyone’s face. The tears. I started to consider that maybe the military was not such a bad choice. My decision was solidified when I started looking into the benefits and opportunities. The sense of service and family. The college benefits all the way to retirement. I decided to enlist and haven’t regretted a second of it. I have experienced so much from my time in service in regard to confidence and personal growth. I can happily say that I am proud to be a member of the NDANG and look forward to what my future with the NDANG will bring me.

Senior year. Small town. Big Family. I wanted to go to college and make my parents proud. The military was already part of my family. My father, brother and all my uncles served our country. I remember my dad talking about traveling the world and describing the things he did and saw. I remember waiting at the

FAMILY tone for my journey in life and how I present myself and perceive the people and world around me. Being in the military gave me a sense of purpose and belonging. The three core values of the Air Force are Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do. These are things that I have carried over into my civilian life and passed along to my children. I believe that as a parent, it is our responsibility to set an example for our children and guide them. Now that I am retired, I get to see the military and my service from a different perspective - a parent’s perspective! I understand the sad faces of my mother and grandmother the day that they dropped me off at the airport for boot camp. I also know how proud my parents were as I get to experience what they did now that our daughters have decided to follow my path and continue the family tradition.

I liked what the NDANG stood for and their service to the community. I also liked the college benefits I would EARN. So, I made one of the best decisions of my life and joined the ND Air National Guard family, a commitment that would span 25 years. I served under and with many amazing people! I have many lifelong friends from my service that I continue to be in contact with.

Seeing just how proud my dad and grandparents looked and listening to what everyone had to say about her made me want to be part of the NDANG family. I was 14 at the time. Three years later, at 17, I enlisted. Coincidentally, my grandpa also enlisted at 17 to serve in Vietnam. I flew out to Texas for basic training in June, a few weeks after graduating high school. The last ten months have been a whirlwind of new experiences with people who have become what I hope to be lifelong friends. My favorite thing about being home now is that my sister and I can sit and talk with my mom, each sharing our experiences about basic training and tech school. I have a new appreciation for all the years my mom worked, especially now that I know more about what her guard life was like. The times when I was little and would wake up to her getting ready in the bathroom while everyone else was still asleep have a deeper meaning. The weekends helping her iron her uniforms and shine her boots, I didn’t know that I would someday be getting up and putting on the same uniform just like she had. I’m planning on taking some of the opportunities to travel out of the country like my uncle did, and I’m beyond excited to see where my career takes me. T O R I NG

Though my service was all stateside, I was able to serve the country and community in many ways, including flood relief for our area. I took my role very serious; uniforms ironed and boots shined. I was proud to represent the NDANG. I always felt I was an integral part of each and every mission that the NDANG was part of. Joining the military set the

2022, North Dakota’s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is celebrating 50 years of promoting supportive civilian work environments for National Guard and Reserve members. ESGR, the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, is a Department of Defense office comprised of dedicated and trained volunteers and staff. The group strives to develop and promote employer support for Guard and Reserve service by advocating for relevant initiatives, recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of applicable laws, and resolving conflict between employers and service members. ESGR informs and educates service members and their civilian employers regarding their rights and responsibilities governed by the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994, and serves as a neutral, free resource to service members and their employers. North Dakota is a state rich in military heritage with many of our National Guard and Reserve members being the third or fourth generation serving in the military. And the employers throughout the state of North Dakota for 50 years have been helping North Dakota Guard and Reserve employees meet the challenges of increased deployments, increased training, and responding to state and national emergencies at a higher pace than ever. These employers play a visible connection between Guard and Reserve employees, local North Dakota communities, the state, and our nation. For the last 50 years, ESGR has been inspiring employer awareness, resolving conflicts, and helping make the employer-military employee relationship work for the nation’s benefit.

February 1925, a group of prominent Fargo leaders traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with the Director of the US Veterans Bureau to discuss the idea of creating a new Veterans hospital in the community. The group saw an increased need in the region to serve the Veterans of all wars, but especially the influx of World War I soldiers. In December of 1925, the proposed hospital was approved and it was time to get to work. The groundbreaking for the 57-bed hospital took place in July of 1928, with the first patient admitted in June of 1929. The campus continued to grow, with more and more buildings being constructed over the next sixty years. The largest and most influential building on the campus, built between 1945 – 1947, is building 9 with 5 stories and 220 patient beds. Today, the Fargo VA Health Care System has grown to become a Joint Commission accredited medical and surgical hospital with 36 acute care beds, a 38 bed community living center, multiple primary care and specialty clinics, 10 community based outpatient clinics and a community resource referral center. The Fargo VA Health Care System operates on their mission to fulfill President Lincoln’s promise “to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan” by serving and honoring America’s Veterans. The Fargo VA Health Care System provides health care to more than 34,000 Veterans living in North Dakota, and also serves 17 counties in Northwest Minnesota and one county in South Dakota. The Fargo VA HealthCare system is affiliated with several higher-education institutions, and provides training to medical students in a variety specialties.

Whole Health is designed to help Veterans achieve and maintain their best health and well-being by providing complimentary and integrative therapies and modalities. This patient - centric team was created with a variety of clinicians and leaders trained in developing healing relationships with their patients. The team gets to know the Veteran as a person and develops an individualized plan based on the Veteran’s goals, needs, and values. Whole Health partners with the Veteran to reach their individual goals for their life and health through health-based skill building. The goal of the Whole Health team is to meet Veterans wherever they are in their health care journey. Individual visits with clinicians and coaches are provided in addition to group therapies and classes which focus on wellness, well-being, and healthy lifestyles. Emcee: Joe Schmit Joe Schmit is an award-winning broadcaster, community leader and popular keynote speaker. He joined KSTP-TV in the Twin Cities in 1985 and has won 18 Emmys from the National Television Academy. He was also honored with the Emmy’s Silver Circle designation for extraordinary contributions to the television industry. As a speaker, Joe was inducted into the Minnesota Chapter of the National Speakers Association Hall of Fame in 2019. He also has earned the CSP (Certified Speaking Professional) designation which only 15 percent of speakers nationally attain. Joe has won 18 Emmys and numerous awards for his community service. He is past president and board member of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Twin Cities and was the winner of the Jim Kelly Distinguished Service Award from Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Odyssey Award for commitment to youth mentorship. EDUCATION IS KEY TO KEEP AHEAD OF FRAUD Business fraud is as old as business, but it’s constantly evolving and taking new forms. Especially over the past year and a half, with many workers first shifting to their homes and now returning to the office, security gaps and changes in behavior have emerged that fraudsters are able to turn to their advantage. Business owners need to know what to watch for and how to be prepared. Often the best defense is simple — stop, think, and ask questions when something unusual comes up. Here are some things to think about:

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR EMAIL COMPROMISE FRAUD During the pandemic, cases of business email compromise (BEC) soared. In BEC, a criminal impersonates a coworker or partner and requests a payment to an account. They may pretend to be a CEO, salesperson, or banker, or may act as a regular employee and ask HR to change their direct deposit. Unlike “spoofed” emails, where the sender address is recognizably fake, today’s BEC often comes from a real hacked account. Keep passwords secure and follow up every email request for funds with a call or in-person verification.

BEWARE OF RANSOMWARE Ransomware is also on the rise. Major attacks make the news, but small companies are a prime target regardless of industry. Ransomware is sold as a package to cybercriminals, so it is no longer the domain of a few skilled hackers. It infiltrates a system, often via an email link, and encrypts files in the background. A victim’s first sign will often come too late — a locked screen demanding payment in exchange for decrypting the data. The best defense: educated employees who don’t click on strange files and links, internet security software, and robust data backups. A great resource is stopransomware.gov.

COVER YOUR BACK WITH BACKUPS, TESTS, CHECKS, AND SOFTWARE Start with internet security software and regular data backups. Then test your data backup to make sure it is copying all expected files, and practice accessing and using the backup. Make sure the backup can’t be infected from the network. Check bank accounts daily for unusual activity. Consider testing employees with fake phishing emails. This is a chance to reinforce key lessons and drive home risks.

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE POLICIES Active defenses and education are crucial, but its also important for businesses to mitigate risk. Check your insurance policy to confirm it covers cybercrime, fraud, and ransomware attacks. Some companies provide assistance in the event of fraud. Insurance brokers and business advisors can help you identify the best level of coverage for you. It can be the difference between a slight disruption and being down for weeks — or maybe even out of business.

EMPLOYEE EDUCATION IS KEY TO BLOCKING FRAUD It can’t be stated enough: people are most often the conduit through which fraud hits a company. Make sure all employees are trained. Too often leaders are taught about the risks, but don’t deliver the message effectively to those in need. Make cyber defense a priority, teach it, and revisit it.
