To start, I am overjoyed to share that in August, our Chamber Foundation was awarded a $9.62 million Good Jobs Challenge Grant from the Economic Development Administration. Together with several community organizations, we will be bolstering our region’s economy by training and developing a skilled workforce in the industries of precision agriculture, advanced manufacturing and cybersecurity/IT. This overall initiative is called the Ignite Initiative Regional Workforce Training System (IIRWTS), and within those industries we will focus specifically on enrollment of new Americans, justice-involved, people of color, military veterans and spouses, and high school students. This is without a doubt the highlight of my career as a chamber executive, and I am beyond grateful for the dedication and support from our entire community, and especially the 78 businesses and elected officials who submitted letters of support for this grant. If you would like additional information or would like be a partner with us, please reach out to me or Jenna Mueller here at The Chamber. Also, we have some big news with The Bridge magazine that you are reading now; you may have noticed that this is a September-October issue. Over the past year, we have been steadily and organically increasing the reach of our Chamber and community voice for a variety of important reasons. We are now moving forward with six expanded issues of The Bridge per year, published bimonthly, and investing our efforts into enhancing the reach and impact that our messages have. In the past, we would typically send around 12,000 physical and digital copies of the magazine to members, businesses, employees and leaders around town. Moving forward, our reach for each issue will be over 50,000 businesses and individuals. In addition to that, we are continuing to diversify our communication channels so you will see and hear us through numerous forms of media. We are extremely excited for this growth and evolution of The Bridge, and look forward to this becoming an even more powerful tool for the work that we are all doing together.
IGreetings, hopeyou are all enjoying the last few weeks of summer. As we enter our new fiscal year, I want to take a moment to thank you all for the integral role you’ve played in driving tremendous success and achievement within our community. Every major step forward we take as an organization, community and region, is made possible by you - our dedicated members who invest time, talent and resources into building a better tomorrow for Fargo Moorhead West Fargo and beyond. I am beyond excited to share with you all of the things we have been up to lately in the community, but especially the big goals and plans we have for the future.
A note from the President
Enjoy this issue of The Bridge and I look forward to seeing you soon!
As you flip through the magazine you’ll come across many stories about the big things in store for our region. I want to specifically call attention to Fueling Our Future (FOF) and the newly-unveiled Master Workforce & Talent Strategy for our region, as this was a top priority for FOF, and we now have a blueprint to success when it comes to workforce challenges in our region. I also want to give very special recognition to our 2022 Legacy Leader, Richard Solberg. Richard’s leadership over the years has had an immense and extremely positive impact on the vibrant and growing FMWF region that we know and love today. In fact, Richard was the very first person that reached out to welcome me to the community almost two years ago. Congratulations, Richard. Please join the community as we come together to honor him at our Annual Celebration on October 18.
6 THE BRIDGE SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2022 PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Shannon Full President & CEO Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce
I enjoy wood working, playing guitar and going to concerts, cooking, playing golf, traveling with my wife and spending time spoiling our two dogs.
I have been married for 19 years and have four children. I also have an irrational fear of birds.
The people that work at the Chamber are truly passionate about what they do. They also have a love for this community and making it prosper. When you become involved in The Chamber you are in the hands of people that will be looking out for your best interest.

What are a few fun facts you can share about yourself?
I sit at the front desk and provide support to visitors and callers. I am also a member of our engagement team, where I support the team by scheduling meetings, reaching out to members and maintaining database records.
So far, the thing that I love most about my job is working with the amazing team at The Chamber.
When I moved to Fargo, I took a chance and submitted an application to participate in the FMWF Chamber Leadership program. That decision was one of the most impactful of my career.

Please briefly describe what you do in your position.
Why would you recommend businesses or professionals get involved in The Chamber?
I like working with numbers and am very social. My family can attest to that by our involvement with local theatre groups. My husband and I have 8 children and they have all been involved in a theatre production over the last 18 years either as part of the cast, technical crew, or orchestra pit – each part is important.

Anja Kalvoda Administrative & Finance Specialist Matt Walstad Vice President of Workforce and Talent
Similar to theatre, each part of The Chamber is important as well. We help businesses and professionals work together as a catalyst for growth and prosperity in the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo area.
I love being able to interact with different people every day and following the accounting flow from setup and registration to the completion of an event and payment.
I have had the good fortune to work with some wonderful groups in my career, but the passion, dedication, and professionalism I have seen in my short time with The Chamber has been unmatched.
Leadership introduced me to so many wonderful things in the community, and connected me with an amazing network of local professionals who were eager and excited to improve the community through their professional contributions. The Chamber, The Leadership program, and the lasting friendships I was able to create truly made me feel like a member of the FMWF community.
As Administrative & Finance Specialist, I handle the day-to-day mail and accounting aspects that come into the office. As part of the team, I work with the event registrations to help people get registered and send invoices afterwards.
Why would you recommend businesses or professionals get involved in The Chamber?
I work closely with the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo business, education, government, and non-profit community to develop and deploy new programs, initiatives, and solutions to the workforce and talent issues facing our region, along with overseeing the management of current development programs like YPN, POC, and Leadership FMWF.
What are a few fun facts you can share about yourself?
I love getting to meet new people and learning new things about our community.

W e are honored to announce that Bell Bank board chairman, accomplished businessman and community champion Richard H. Solberg is the recipient of this year’s Legacy Leader Award! This prestigious award recognizes and emphasizes the important role and contributions of long-time local leaders in both shaping and serving the metropolitan community and greater region. Solberg was selected by a nomination committee based on his leadership in business and in the community.
“Richard Solberg’s leadership has had a tremendous positive impact on our community that will continue to benefit future generations,” remarked Chamber Board Chair Shawn Dobberstein. “Richard is thoughtful, passionate, caring and leads by example. He is always willing to serve and provide guidance for causes that will benefit the community. He is not a person who takes or needs credit for his contributions; he will always recognize and lift up the work of others on his team. He is so deserving of this prestigious Legacy Leader award from The Chamber. Richard, congratulations on this award and thank you for everything you have done to make FMWF a vibrant place.”
During Solberg’s tenure at Bell, the bank grew from a single north Fargo location to a regional bank and trust company, with multiple banking locations in North Dakota and Minnesota. Solberg’s son, Michael, was named Bell Bank’s president in January 2009 and CEO in 2014.
Richard Solberg serves as board chairman of Bell Bank. From 1968 to 1982, he worked for First National Bank, Grand Forks, N.D., and Citizens State Bank in his hometown of Finley, N.D. Solberg was named president and CEO of Citizens State Bank in 1979. Solberg became president and CEO of Bell Bank (at that time State Bank of Fargo) in 1982.

“Last summer, we held a major FOF retreat with business and community leaders and had the opportunity to level-set our education as leaders,” said GFMEDC President & CEO Joe Raso. “We heard impactful and educational presentations about the economy, demographics, trends and workforce. Then we had a half-day discussion that organically centered all around workforce development. Fueling Our Future was challenged to dig deeper to find ways to better work together, review all of the data that was shared and set a course of action for our region. That work has been done and it is now time to dig into this in a meaningful way.” You can view a video of the full July 25 event and learn more about Fueling Our Future by using the QR code.

Making it easy to take action applies to employers, too. Offering a financial wellness program should be as easy to set up and administer as it is to use. Fortunately, the trend towards automation, online self-serve portals, and remote assistance from professionals allows business owners and administrators the same kind of convenience and time-savings the program is designed to deliver for workers.
Businesses can help employees achieve financial wellness by partnering with business advisors and benefits providers who make wellness a focus. These programs offer one-on-one and group sessions to guide employees, along with tools they can use to manage their individual goals and progress, helping workers take control and gain confidence without requiring the employer to manage the programs.

The COVID-19 pandemic raised awareness and interest in all types of insurance. Many workers took a closer look at their health insurance and became more savvy about comparing offerings. Meanwhile, it also became readily apparent to many why safety net insurance, like life insurance or long-term disability coverage, is so valuable. Employers should reexamine their offerings and consider offering or promoting these benefits as part of a complete package.

One of the hardest financial wellness goals for many people to achieve is building emergency savings. Employers can help encourage their employees to save by choosing a financial wellness program that includes the option for employees to establish emergency savings accounts. These accounts offer a higher yield if the account owner deposits funds on a regular basis and lets it build up. Helping employees set up automatic deposits from their paycheck makes it even easier for them to save.
Retirement accounts are still one of the most visible and attractive benefits for employees, but like all aspects of financial wellness, they need to be used properly to have the desired impact. Gate City Bank has been selected by the Secretary of Defense for this award – which is the highest honor given by the U.S. government to employers for exceptional support of National Guard and Reserve members. Winners are recognized for going above and beyond to support National Guard and Reserve employees with enhanced pay and benefit packages, flexible scheduling, generous leave policies and support before and after deployment.
“Gate City Bank elevates the standard by actively reaching out to military servicemembers to see how they can support them better or differently,” adds Andy Stein, Gate City Bank’s Vice President of Information Security, who has served in the North Dakota Army National Guard for 11 years. 38 THE BRIDGE SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2022 FM DIVERSION PROJECT
The FM Area Diversion Project
On Tuesday, August 9, we came together to celebrate the official groundbreaking of The FM Area Diversion Project, an over-decade-long project fueled by community organizations, residents and policymakers advocating for permanent flood protection. The collaboration throughout our communities, on both sides of the river, is truly remarkable, and everyone involved should be extremely proud of this one-of-a-kind project that we were able to bring to fruition together. This project will serve as a major asset to our business and residential communities, protecting North Dakota’s largest economic hub and Minnesota’s fastest-growing metro outside of the twin cities. Not only will this keep our businesses and nearly 250,000 residents protected, it will also strengthen our region’s business and talent attraction efforts. This was a historical day for the FMWF region. The Chamber is grateful for the support and dedication of our members, community organizations, elected officials and residents for making this project a reality. Congratulations to Red River Valley Alliance and ASN Constructors for the vibrant and successful groundbreaking celebration in August, and thank you to all speakers, partners and elected officials for being present at this major event.
