PRESIDENT FROM THE
New (fiscal) year brings new volunteers, priorities We’re about one month into our new fiscal year here at The Chamber, and we’re excited about the prospect of yet another strong run for our Chamber and for our community. We’ve seen quite a few accomplishments in the past 12 months. In fact, you’ll notice something special in this month’s Bridge about that. A brief Annual Report recaps some of the most notable achievements across our events and programs. As always, none of these accomplishments would be possible without the support of our volunteers. We’re lucky to have a large group of dedicated men and women who graciously donate their time and talents to what we do. From new leadership joining our Board of Directors, to the folks who serve on our events committees and plan educational and inspirational training
opportunities, to our program volunteers who seek out valuable networking, service and leadership opportunities, to those who represent business interests in the public policy arena and support our military, to the ambassadors. The latter is a group focused on serving our member businesses by welcoming new members and celebrating milestones with them. Everything these folks do is about spreading the goodwill of our Chamber and community. The strength of these volunteers helps our Chamber staff fulfill the mission and vision of our organization. We sincerely appreciate all they do to give back.
At our Annual Meeting last month, we were able to recognize all the individuals who volunteer and serve The Chamber. It’s always an honor to turn the spotlight on them and share what they’ve helped us do. As we push further into this next year, I hope things continue to push forward in a positive direction for our Chamber, community and country. We’ll do our best to serve our members and offer valuable opportunities for all. If there is anything we can do for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Together, we can do more.
I also have to thank each of our volunteers’ employers, who graciously allow these individuals time away to do this work. This support and teamwork is one of the reasons I love this region. FMWFCHAMBER.COM · 5

Highlights from the Seventh Annual Meeting Another successful fiscal year—and corresponding Annual Meeting—are in the books. Last month, at the Holiday Inn, almost 700 Chamber members gathered to hear our accomplishments, look ahead and honor Bernie Dardis as the 2017 Legacy Leader. We thanked all our outgoing Board members and committee chairs and shared highlights from the past year. Thank you to all! You’ve probably seen their trucks around town—you know, the one with a Laney’s man waving at you from the back door of the vehicle. It’s just one of Laney’s unique forms of advertising that backs this special company. Laney’s began as a typical new construction plumbing company in the ‘60s. A couple decades later, current co-owner Scott Nelson purchased the business, adding heating, cooling and in-home services to its offerings. He also helped implement a strategy shift for the business, introducing their now-famous 8 to 8 at the regular rate guarantee and a strengthened commitment to the public.
The company has engrained itself into the community by serving residents and businesses, providing quality jobs, and giving back to the community. Even during hard financial times, they’ve sacrificed profits for community service. But that approach has paid off in the end, as they’ve seen incredible growth in both revenue and employees in the past several years.
Kevin Wolf joined in 1993, starting by simply installing their computer systems, eventually becoming GM and then president. “Since then, we’ve experienced great growth and continue to look at other services to offer our customers,” he said. Some of these add-on services so far have included electrical services, duct cleaning, sewer & drain cleaning and restoration, water conditioning and softening, and more.
Keys to Success
10 THE BRIDGE · OCTOBER 2017
One key to their success is that they always look for ways to separate themselves. Initiatives such as guaranteed upfront pricing, lifetime guarantees, never an overtime charge, unique advertising, professionalism and care, have all helped establish their identity. Wolf says it’s also extremely important to them to hire the right
people—and not just a heartbeat. “While technical skills are always important in our industry, the person themselves is the most important criteria,” he said. “Polite, professional, eager to learn, willing to work and ethical—those are the people we want.” Laney’s is dedicated to providing the best. In 1993, they joined a national group called Nexstar to offer training on best practices. They also cite their commitment to safety as a core value. Valuing their employees is further evidenced by a generous benefits package. “Ethics is number one,” Wolf said. “Without this, no other values can exist. We want to treat our customers and employees with respect and fairness in everything we do.” To make sure they follow through on their promises and customer
MEMBER PROFILE
service, Laney’s employs a rather basic strategy—they ask! Laney’s calls and surveys every customer to make sure that they are satisfied. They also monitor and respond to online reviews, happily reporting that they consistently maintain at least a 4 out of 5 rating.
Community involvement is high
on the list of priorities for Laney’s leadership, and they support multiple organizations through special programs, sponsorships and hands-on volunteering. They also offer a program called Service from the Heart, a program that allows Laney’s to lend it expertise and services in HVAC, plumbing and electrical to select non-profits, helping to maintain their equipment as well as advising them in decisions that need to be made in these areas. Looking forward, Wolf hopes to continue to be successful so that they can keep helping the community and provide for their employees. And as he and Nelson look ahead to retirement, he hopes future leadership keeps moving things forward.
Ethics is number one. Without this, no other values can exist. We want to treat our customers and employees with respect and fairness in everything we do.
Wolf calls Laney’s a “modest” company and says the best award is being part of a great team. While that is certainly true, the company’s benchmark success makes them no doubt very deserving of another award— this year’s Business of the Year.

Discussing the drought at September Eggs & Issues You’ve seen the headlines “’History is being made’ Farmers, ranchers assess impact of North Dakota drought” and “Truckers, hay wanted to help aid drought-stricken livestock producers in region.” Although we may not see the cracked, dry land here in the Red River Valley, the economic impacts that
Daryl Ritchison, interim director of the North Dakota Agricultural Weather Network, shared fascinating information on weather patterns that the state has seen. Ritchison pointed out that not all areas of the state were hit equally in terms of dry weather, with western North Dakota and eastern Montana being hit the worst. As we head into August and September, Ritchison reminded the crowd those are on average our driest months, which could put even more strain on the already-impacted producers. Dr. Frayne Olson, associate professor at NDSU, discussed the potential economic impacts. He shared that it may not be felt across the board—some agricultural industries may feel it more than others and many may not feel it until 2018. With the livestock industry hit the hardest,

could be seen by this event affect us all across the state. Last month we gathered to hear from experts on just how we have reached this point, what impact is it having on North Dakota producers and what kind of economic hits we could be facing.
Dr. Olson pointed out that farmers and ranchers will still spend money, but there will be belt-tightening. Capital purchases may go down, but repair costs will go up in an effort to use old equipment longer.
to start cultivating some crops on some Conservation Reserve Program land. His hopes are that what they are able to produce there, they can transport it the 300 miles home to help feed their herds.
Weston Dvorak is a fifth-generation cattle rancher who operates near Manning, North Dakota with his wife and daughters. In addition to their 400-head cattle operation, they also operate a 1,000 head feed lot. Dvorak said he was seeing the trouble with the drought begin in December 2016 with a bitterly cold winter and an overabundance of snow. Cattle were going through hay at an exponential rate just to keep themselves fed. This in turn used up a majority of the hay reserves for many ranchers in that area. Moving forward with extensively dry conditions, farmers and ranchers were facing a real problem this summer. Weston stated that due to the drought, he had to cut his herd by 10 to 15%. As a result, through his personal connections, Dvorak has come to the eastern part of the state
Dr. Greg Lardy, associate vice president of agricultural affairs and head of the Animal Science department at NDSU, shared what is being done to assist those who are suffering through the drought and just how busy the NDSU Extension offices have been. A hay lottery was put into place by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture to assist livestock producers with hay donations from farmers from across the country. Through the state government, private businesses and non-profit groups, donations have been made to help sustain many of the farmers and ranchers. NDSU Extension continues to be busy assisting farmers and ranchers where needed and offering educational opportunities including farm financial planning information.

FMWF: A Region on the Grow!
MILITARY AFFAIRS
Military Affairs Committee Gets a WDAY Honor Flight Highlight At the September Military Affairs committee meeting, the group heard from Dave Rice, Board member of the WDAY Honor Flight. He shared the background and history of how Honor Flight came to be and what their plans are for the future. Thanks to WDAY Honor Flight and their hard-working volunteers, over 1,000 World War II and Korean War veterans have been flown to Washington, D.C. to see the memorials erected in their honor. These special trips are no small feat to bring together. With the estimated cost of over $150,000 per flight, fundraising from private citizens and organizations is vital. The countless hours of volunteer time that
14  THE BRIDGE ¡ OCTOBER 2017
goes into planning and executing these events maintain it as a highlight for many who are able to participate. With veterans who attend receiving VIP treatment as they travel around Washington, D.C., they receive a true heroes welcome home when they land at Hector International Airport. The Chamber and its Honor Star members are happy to continue to support this group with financial donations. Rice was happy to share with us that the next flight has been announced for November 4-5, and is already full. If you would like to learn more, visit wdayhonorflight.areavoices.com!

One challenge we face is understanding how other people communicate. Studies show that each individual has a preferred style of communication, therefore, in order to connect with others we must learn to flex our communication styles. In this interactive session, you will assess your own communication style and work together to identify ways you can flex your style in order to open up the communication channels and gain understanding with those you interact with on a regular basis.

When you find what really ignites your soul, it has the power to transform your life and the lives of others—if you let it. During this session, you will explore how to take risks and put purpose to action by channeling your own self-belief, humility and resilience. A panel of community risk-takers will help you develop a manageable plan to mitigate the fears holding you back from achieving your life’s purpose. Panelists include Angela Mathers, Minnesota State Community and Technical College; Carrie Carney, Eventide Senior Living Communities; and Nikki Berglund, Luna Fargo.
We all have two sides to our social mask. The outside is filled with positive traits we project to the world, while the inside is filled with our quiet thoughts and concealed self. As women, we feel particular pressure to prove we “have it all together.” This constant stress is exhausting and leaves us hoping people do not see the mess and chaos bubbling beneath the surface. In a world where we are challenged to be authentic and vulnerable, how do we know what to share with those around us, and how do we honor the parts of ourselves we choose to keep from the world? Learn the theory behind the persona, explore the two sides of your unique social mask, and build understanding and appreciation at this session.

YEA!: YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY
YEA! will get underway this month with orientation and classes at Concordia College Offutt School of Business. We are eager to see creative ideas emerge as our students brainstorm and collaborate with one another. Be sure to follow @FMWFYEA on Twitter for updates on what the students are up to each week!
@FMWFYEA
September was a busy month as we recruited and selected our third Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) class. Katie Ralston, our YEA! program coordinator, delivered over 40 presentations to nearly 2,500 middle and high school students. We are thankful for our YEA! partners in area schools and businesses who have helped us promote this program and look forward to introducing the 2017-18 YEA! class to you next month.
YEA!
gets Underway!
Graduate Update
After facilitating the YEA! program for two years, it has been fun to see graduates of the program emerge as real entrepreneurs and young professionals within the FMWF business community. Most recently, our 2016 Saunders Scholar, Mukai Selekwa, and his partners at Webblen, the business he developed in YEA!, fully launched their Webblen app! In September, Webblen became available in the App Store (for iPhone users). Since graduating from YEA!, Mukai and his partners, Nate Thoreson and Austin Braham, have evolved Webblen into a resource for individuals with similar interests to connect through events. App users can select their areas of interest and will then receive information about events happening in our community that fall within their interests. We couldn’t be more excited for the Webblen team! It’s truly incredible to see the business ideas our young people have come to life! We hope you’ll join us in supporting this YEA! grad by downloading and using Webblen. Android users, you’ll have access to Webblen in the coming months.
Thank you to Red River Coffee for providing gift certificates for our YEA! recruiting presentations and school visits! They were a big hit with our high school audiences!
