a note from the
PRESIDENT On a mission to honor our military Heading into a month centered around thankfulness, it is fitting to reflect on the unparalleled dedication our service men and women and their families have for the missions they carry out on our behalf. It is for this reason that we at The Chamber work so hard to advocate for and honor these individuals and their families. For us at The Chamber, dedication to the military forces means a variety of things. It means engaging business leaders and military personnel through our Military Affairs committee, providing opportunities for businesses to honor military members and veterans through our Honor Star program, interacting with public officials to strengthen the Happy Hooligans Air Guard in order to defend against any possible Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) effect on the base, hosting military appreciation events and fundraisers to support and honor the military as well as providing education to the community at large as to the economic impact that the guard has on our region. In 2016, the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics at North Dakota State University conducted a study on the economic effects of the Air National Guard on the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. They concluded that the Air National Guard alone was responsible for $93.4 million in business activity (sum of direct, indirect and induced business activity). Knowing this, The Chamber lobbied on their behalf at the state legislature to ensure military-friendly policies, drawing more service members to the region. With these efforts, we have continually advocated for state funds to assist in recruitment efforts for the Air Guard in order to protect the Happy Hooligans from negative effects in the event of another BRAC. In order to uphold our commitment to education surrounding the military, on page 30 you will find an article all about our area’s military. There, you can “meet” our local military leadership in each of the branches, find definitions of common words used in the military, learn more about our Military Affairs committee, Honor Star program and more! It is an honor to advocate for our military men and women as they give so much to our community, states and nation. Because of this deep commitment from our military men and women as well as their families, we are on a mission to foster a community of support for these individuals. Please join me in this noble venture.

CHAMBER EVENTS
2020
State of the Cities Thursday, January 16 8 to 9:30 a.m. Hilton Garden Inn Fargo
Bernie Dardis West Fargo
Tim Mahoney Fargo
Join us at this annual event that brings our community together to ask questions of our local city’s leaders and talk about our region’s growth, goals and priorities. Where are we headed? What challenges do we face and what successes can we celebrate? We will have our local mayors representing their cities to provide updates, including Mayor Bernie Dardis in West Fargo, Mayor Johnathan Judd in Moorhead, Mayor Tim Mahoney in Fargo and Dilworth Mayor Chad Olson. Don’t miss out on this community-wide conversation. In addition to presentations from the mayors, live polling and Q&A, you can also expect to get a hot breakfast with every registration and the opportunity to network with your peers and our region’s leaders.
Johnathan Judd Moorhead
Chad Olson Dilworth
Don’t forget to bring in your cell phone! We’ll once again conduct live polls to ask the audience what issues you think are most pressing. Last year 41% of attendees said that workforce was the most important challenge in our region, followed by behavioral and mental health and opioid addiction in second for the first time, overtaking flood protection. Will the tides turn this year? Share your voice and weigh in!

The Chamber has a Coupon Book?
Integrity Fundraisers works with local schools and non-profit organizations in order to assist their overall fundraising efforts. The Chamber is happy to assist in the impact that this book has on the youth in our community! The funds raised have gone directly back into schools, used for field trips, experiences, and even in some cases much-needed building renovations.
What have coupon participants said about being featured? “Hi, my name is Rob Roberts and I am the owner of your local Breadsmith Bakery in South Fargo. I began with the Chamber Coupon Book at its inception eight years ago, and have found it to be impactful as well as a very positive experience. Last year alone, we accepted over 4,000 coupons, averaging almost seven visits per day all year round!”
Fun facts about the coupon book • Every business in the book is a current Chamber member. • There are 42 businesses featured and 252 coupons plus a mobile coupon pass • Every featured member on the front cover (26 businesses) is giving something away completely FREE! • Each year approximately $104,000 is raised and goes right back into our local youth and non-profits. Currently 9 local schools participate in this fundraiser.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Founded by Paul Wurzer in 1978, FBS started as a custom programming shop primarily focused on financial institutions and hospitals. Forty-one years later, and now run by Paul’s son Michael, FBS has grown to become one of the top three vendors in the world for MLS (Multiple Listing Service) software and a leader in real estate technology and software innovation. Utilized by over 247,000 industry professionals, FBS-created technology and software plays an important role in helping more Americans become homeowners. If you’ve bought, sold or shopped for a home in the area, it’s likely you’ve used Flexmls®, FBS's flagship product during your search. Formally expressed, the FBS purpose statement is: “FBS is dedicated to the American Dream of independence through ownership, for both our employeeowners and those we serve with our real estate software. As owners, we embrace the responsibilities necessary to gain the freedom, opportunity, and respect of ownership. We are empowered to exceed our clients' expectations with innovative real estate products and services.”
What makes your organization unique?
Are there any initiatives you’re focusing on right now?
Since becoming an employee-owned company in 2005, our path to success has been paved by our purpose: proliferating ownership through our company structure (100% employee-owned) and software products (real estate focused). We’ve walked that path with focus and in doing so, demonstrated that a software company can be built and scaled sustainably, nurturing and retaining both customers and employees for decades through tremendous growth. We were commended for choosing that path by Forbes in May 2019, when they named FBS a 2019 Forbes Small Giant.
In recent years, FBS has acquired and invested in products and companies that serve real estate professionals at every level. Most notably, we are set to release two products in the coming months:
Being selected by Forbes from hundreds of applicants as one of 25 Small Giant Companies in America is truly an honor for us. It validates the decision we made nearly 15 years ago to define and walk our own path paved with the goal of creating a purpose-driven organization that creates owners before marketing mantras, cultural initiatives, twitter handles, and recognition like this existed. We are so incredibly proud to be a Forbes Small Giant.
Spring websites empower brokers, agents and the MLS to showcase their listings in all-in-one, public-facing, consumer portals packed with live listing data, local information and more.
FlōPlan is a mobile application that enables real estate professionals to create and upload a complete floor plan to their listing online in 24 hours using only a cellphone. It's easy and affordable; we want consumers to gain the benefit of a FlōPlan on every listing.
With new products comes growth! We invite you to visit WeAreFBS.com for current job openings.
What do you like best about doing business here? FBS was founded in Fargo and we’re proud to call it home. Each year, we host a three-day customer event that brings in ~130 MLS staff from all over the country. Sharing the charm of Fargo with some of our favorite people is something we look forward to every summer. —Katie Kapel, Events and Brand Experience FMWFCHAMBER.COM • 11
MEMBER PROFILE
Entrepreneur of the Year— Jeff Shipley
Embracing failures is not typical in the world of entrepreneurship. However, Jeff Shipley isn’t your typical entrepreneur. Shipley believes that embracing failure is a pre-requisite to success and often reminds the team of this formula. “As a leader, it’s important to be transparent and vulnerable enough to share your own failures and more importantly what you learned from them,” Shipley said. “Failure is a good indication you are pushing yourself out of your comfort zone—where the magic happens!” Shipley, a local businessman, originally from Devil’s Lake, currently owns and leads 12 real estate-related companies with multiple locations covering two states, and this number is growing rapidly. JSE, Inc., Shipley’s parent company, was recently honored with a #1,327 ranking on the Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest growing companies. Moreover, locally this month, four of the companies were named as finalists for InForum’s Best of the Best in the Red River Valley. “It’s certainly been an amazing year for all of our companies,” Shipley said. “The recognition just validates the 12 THE BRIDGE • NOVEMBER 2019
extraordinary talent that our teams continue to attract. While I might be the one that is handed the award, it’s the team that deserves the credit.” JSE, Inc. started as The FM Real Estate Team in 2009 with less than 10 people. Now, JSE Inc. has become a family of companies with a unified goal of helping others live the biggest life possible.
"We've put our all into building this unique culture that really is hard to understand from the outside and hard to explain from the inside" KW Inspire Realty, acquired by Shipley in 2015, has become the largest residential real estate broker in North Dakota, adding 62 agents in 2018 alone. Spire Custom Homes, started five years ago and added over half a dozen newly designed plans with local market price points to fit the needs of our expanding community. Regency Title, acquired in 2017, has more than doubled its market share, setting year over year monthly growth records in 6 of the last 7 months. Most recently, Shipley started Forward Mortgage, which is already being recognized as one of the top mortgage companies in Fargo Moorhead and has instantly provided real value to our team members and homeowners.
Experiencing such quick growth over 10 years comes with its challenges, but Shipley says, “My role has been to find and hire great people who value what we value, set and share the vision and get out of their way.” The vision of JSE Inc. is vast and scalable with growth at every level, allowing opportunity for both veteran and new professionals to build careers worth having and businesses worth owning. Following a people-first approach, integrity is their most highly protected principle. Shipley believes that a business is only as good as its people. “My grandma once told me that you must be able to lay your head on your pillow at night and know that you have your word,” he said. “Never lose that.” This along with asking great questions, embracing failure, and constantly working on yourself and your mindset are attributable to the organization's growth. “We’ve put our all into building this unique culture that really is hard to understand from the outside and hard to explain from the inside,” Shipley said. “While each company has a different product or service and is independently operated, we support each other at a very high level. We focus on communication and constantly discuss how we truly win together. Nobody succeeds alone!” Education and personal growth is another value important to Shipley.
MEMBER PROFILE
To invest in their people, over 1,100 education opportunities were provided to staff and agents in 2018. Inspire U, the newest company in the family, offers personal growth and mindset courses to the community among continuing education courses for local agents. “We value personal growth and see it as key to growing a solid business,” he commented. “Our people amaze me every day,” Shipley said. “They are constantly creating opportunities to give back in their own ways, using their time and unique talents, and finding passion serving many of our local non-profits. We also love to serve together, as it is a great way to team build and contribute at the same time. We’ve recently had a great time at the Ronald McDonald House & YWCA and ran fundraisers for the Dorothy Day House, Local Food Pantry and the United Way, among many others.” The team also makes sure they take care of their own. In times of difficulty with members or families of the team, they all step up. “Sometimes it’s financially, sometimes making meals, or support with their business—that’s the true magic in who we are, and what we are building. It’s not something we advertise, you won’t see this on billboards or magazines, it’s just who we are, it’s what we do, our culture. Our team knows we all have each other’s backs if and when you need it. It's just who we are and that's priceless.” The family of companies was created to empower team members and agents to take ownership and run businesses on their terms and build their own brands. “It’s not about me—it never has been,” Shipley said. “I gain joy by creating the opportunities for others to succeed and adding as much value as possible so there is no better place for them to build a business or career that supports their BIG WHY…that in itself is my own BIG WHY. These people are my second family. I will always do my best to help them succeed.”
We believe as an organization that embracing failure is a pre-requisite to success—it's a message we make sure our teams hear often.
Fail Often, Fail Fast, Fail Forward.

EGGS & ISSUES
Talk about transportation in our region: Eggs & Issues recap At the top of October, our Eggs & Issues event “The Route to Removing Barriers for Employment: United Way Workforce Transportation Project” focused on the United Way’s partnership with MATBUS, the City of Fargo and various community partners to successfully secure reliable and affordable transportation to the Fargo Industrial Park, which hadn’t been available since the 1990s.
Fargo’s Assistant Director of Transit for MATBUS Matthew Peterson spoke to the impressive timeline that this service was accomplished within. He said “This is one of the only routes or services that we were able to get going on such a short time,” going on to commend United Way’s ability to engage key stakeholders in the conversation quickly. He explained that this service isn’t a typical fixed route for MATBUS. TapRide, an on-demand bus service works more like Uber or Lyft to ensure employees of the nearly 20,000 jobs in the Fargo Industrial Park have reliable public transportation.
#FMWFEGGS
Thomas Hill, VP for Community Impact at the United Way of Cass-Clay, began the program outlining the TapRide service that was launched in August and spoke to the importance of this collaboration. He referred to it as “an opportunity to
increase access and remove barriers so more people can access good jobs and employers can fill their workforce needs.”
Carey Fry, Workforce Manger of Job Service ND, spoke to the numerous barriers of individuals getting and holding a job. Noting transportation as the first priority on the list she said, “The transportation barrier is so important because the rest an employer can work with, but if they can’t get there, then there is no job.” HR Manager at Cardinal IG Kelsey Kasten talked about the need for this service and how reliability is a big selling point. Many times, candidates for a job are confident they can find reliable transportation if they get the job, but once they do and winter hits or the co-worker they had been riding with daily is sick, their transportation becomes not so reliable. In this, she explained that the service will greatly help with retention of employees and decrease employee turnover. As this is a new service, there was limited data on the impacts that TapRide has had on the Industrial Park’s workforce, however the team was happy with current usage of the unique service. This important service, which developed through a collaboration of the United Way and key stakeholders, is serving as a solution to one significant barrier for our area’s workforce: transportation.
Moorhead’s special elections The City of Moorhead will hold a special election on Tuesday, November 5. Agribusiness Update Our Agribusiness committee went on the road for September’s meeting as they attended the 2019 Big Iron NAMA Social! Elli Ressler, grower services director for the North Dakota Corn Growers Association and Agribusiness committee member said: “Attending the 2019 Big Iron NAMA Social was a great way to connect with other businesses and organizations. We also had the opportunity to hear from the NDSU Student NAMA team who took first place at the national competition this past spring. It was inspiring to hear about the students' experience at the national competition and how much work they put into their presentation.”

The Focus Mindset: How to Stay on Task in a Distracted World
Wednesday, November 20 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Hilton Garden Inn
We live in a world with 70,000 thoughts that travel through our head a day. Thoughts that come and go no matter what we do. Of those thoughts, 80% are either rooted in the past or the future, with only 20% in the present. More alarming is that only half of those thoughts are positive, and half of those are relevant to what you are doing. With a human attention span only lasting 8 seconds, how do we ever accomplish anything?
Karla Wolford
Founder and CEO, Sports Chiropractor and Coach Elevate Human Potential and EHP CrossFit
This session will equip you with the tools to know what thoughts to keep in your focus window so you can stay on task at work and hit the goals you set out to reach. Attendees will also learn to identify common workplace distractions, triggers, and action steps to take to regain focus.
REGISTRATION includes lunch

What are others saying about Marissa and Lean Out? “I saw Marissa speak before the book came out. She told revealing personal stories about her experiences at Google and Facebook, bringing us along on her journey with an inviting humor and wit, also tying in research from behavioral science, management studies, etc. Yes, she answer a key question: what have we’ve gotten wrong about women at work? But she also provided great insights and perspective on corporate dysfunction and how we can improve everything from leadership and talent evaluation, to reward systems, innovation/ creativity and motivation.” —Kim Ray, Amazon.com review, June 15, 2019

Connection Opportunities
What is PUSH and why are we talking about it?
As an addition to our Women Connect speaker each month, women in the community have an opportunity to continue networking through the PUSH program. In short, it allows women to meet new people through these small circles of influence. The mission behind PUSH is to create a supportive network of women who empower each other to ask tough questions, challenge the norm, and grow individually and professionally.
PUSH Groups
We currently have 66 groups (of 4 to 8 women) that meet once a month throughout the FMWF area. PUSH offers you the flexibility to start your own group, or we can place you in one that fits based on your networking requests! September brought a new calendar year of Women Connect, and the first year of non-originating committee members leading PUSH. This year, our committee’s priority is to bring a fresh focus to this great opportunity for women. We aim to help you make bold, lasting connections. Our vision is to change the way women encourage each other and empower themselves. 18 THE BRIDGE • NOVEMBER 2019
We are broadening our reach to provide further flexibility, and we have even more ways than ever to connect!
1. The original coffee connect Coffee Connect is an opportunity for you to meet someone new. Simply invite one or more women to join you for coffee to discuss the speaker’s topic or find business connections.
2. Join a PUSH group
Be bold and join a randomly placed group of women to meet monthly, build friendships while growing in your personal and professional life.
3. Pop-Up PUSH
We understand that not everyone can commit to a monthly meeting. This “Pop-Up PUSH” opportunity can accommodate anyone—from working moms to the single ladies. Our monthly social held after the monthly Women Connect speaker provides flexibility to your schedule, and no registration required. Pop in for Pop-Up PUSH!

LEADERSHIP FMWF
Leadership class learns non-profits
The Fargo Moorhead West Fargo metro has a number of non-profit organizations that serve diverse populations in our community. For many, gaining exposure to gather funds or volunteers for their organization is important. For our October session, the Leadership class had the opportunity to learn about a variety of different non-profit organizations in the community. The day started at the the Village Family Service with Travis Christopher from Dakota Medical Foundation giving an overview of the non-profit landscape in the metro. Following his presentation, the class heard the seven Community Change Initiative (CCI) proposals that were selected to become this year’s projects. Following our CCI proposals, the class participated in non-profit roundtables, getting 12 minutes with six different non-profits. Billi Jo Zeilinski, Make-A-Wish; John Fisher, Friends of the Children; Missy Heilman, BIO Girls; Erica Johnsrud, Ronald McDonald House Charities; Darcy Kasprowicz, North Dakota Autism Center; and Nancy McKenzie, PATH, served as our roundtable hosts. The class had the chance to learn about both national and locally grown nonprofits, their board structures and the populations they serve. After our time at The Village, participants split into groups to tour non-profits in the community. This year, participants had the opportunity to tour Churches United for the Homeless and Family Healthcare. This provided the class with the opportunity to get an insider’s look at the difference these organizations are making to the individuals and families they serve. In addition to these great organizations, some members of the class had the opportunity to serve at Great Plains Food Bank. 550 pounds of cereal were packed for families the food bank serves! At the end of the day, the class got to kick back and reflect on what they learned at their monthly social at Drekker.
