November 2021

A note from the President I am honored and blessed to be the leader of this organization, and thinking about it gets me a little choked up because I am very passionate about the work we are doing. When my family and I moved here almost a year ago we were absolutely blown away. This community, unlike any other we have lived in, shows up for one another. You all show up when there are problems to solve, questions to ask, people to help, events to attend, celebrations to enjoy and so much more. What my family and I found here was unbelievable and unexpected; we found passionate people that care about where we are headed in the future. I am thankful to have had the opportunity last month at our Annual Celebration to set the tone and vision for our organization and for the community that we serve. I am excited about the collaborative opportunities we have with so many great partners and organizations to bring our missions together to make an immense impact on our region. We are positioned well for the future. It is fitting to be having these conversations about the strength of our community and region, as it is now the month of Small Business Saturday. Small Businesses make up over 70% of The Chamber’s membership, and they truly are the backbone of not only our organization but the entire community. We are honored to share a few of their stories this month in The Bridge. On Saturday, November 27, be sure to support our small business Chamber members, and all small businesses in our community! To all of our small business owners and operators; know that we are here for you, we will be your voice when you need it, and we will continue to strive to give you the access and engagement you need at any stage in your journey.

CHAMBER FACES

2021-22 Incoming Board Members

Meet the Chamber staff —New hire!

Tina Amerman Doosan Bobcat

Bernt Eidsmoe Graphics and Multimedia Specialist

Please briefly describe what you do in your position.

Mike Arnston Cardinal IG

It is my responsibility to advance The Chamber’s key messages, publications and marketing efforts by producing highquality content and visual design for various media use, including print, web, video, digital signage and social media.

What do you love about your role so far/ what are you looking forward to?

I love the team of people I get to work with! My coworkers legitimately love what they do, have a passion for their careers and the community. I am excited to see the different opportunities to promote all The Chamber has to offer.

What are a few fun facts you can share about yourself?

Dr. William Heegaard Essentia Health

“Fun facts”? Nothing. I sent a text to my wife asking her. She responded, “Star Wars”? Seriously though, I always love to go out with friends and am a huge fanboy when it comes to Star Wars (minus the sequels) and ‘80s nostalgia.

What is something interesting or unexpected you learned about The Chamber since starting?

I had no idea The Chamber offered so many resources to it’s members and it’s impact on the community. The Chamber is a key behind the scenes player in making the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo communities a great place to live!

Military Veterans in FargoMoorhead Area Deserve Support By Amanda Torok, Gate City Bank Senior Vice President of Culture Military veterans throughout FargoMoorhead and beyond have sacrificed so much for the sake of our freedom, and they deserve to be honored – especially at work. Gate City Bank has a long history of creating a better way of life for military personnel and their families. The Bank accomplishes this through support, gratitude and recognition, while offering top-ofthe-line workplace benefits that help courageous soldiers continue doing what they do best: serve.

“Gate City Bank is truly thankful for the opportunity to make a difference for servicepeople and their loved ones,” says Kevin Hanson, President & CEO. “Whether they’re customers, community members or fellow team members, these heroes 6  THE BRIDGE

deserve our support for all they do to defend this great country.” Additionally, Gate City Bank has assembled a Military Support Committee centered around providing a better way of life for service members, veterans and their families. The group works through strategic subcommittees throughout Gate City Bank’s footprint, researching military-related events for potential partnerships, finding unique ways to recognize past and present service members, and promoting veteran hiring and retention. Gate City Bank’s military support efforts have helped multiple team member veterans, including Andy Stein, Vice President of Information Security. Stein has served in the North Dakota Army National Guard for 11 years. He was deployed to Kuwait in 20112012 and Fort Meade, MD, in 2019-2020. “Gate City Bank has been so supportive of my efforts to defend this great country,” Stein says. “By standing behind team members who serve, the Bank reduces stress for them and their families.”

Partnering with ND Cares to Enhance Soldier Support To further broaden its military support strategy, Gate City Bank has partnered with ND Cares, a coalition launched in 2015 as an executive order by thenGovernor Jack Dalrymple to

improve business collaboration on behavior health services for military veterans, families and survivors. In partnership with ND Cares, Gate City Bank signed a statement of support establishing itself as part of a statewide network dedicated to educating residents about potential needs and challenges faced by those who have served.

Recognizing Heroes for Years to Come Gate City Bank will always support the service members who keep our nation safe, standing with them for a better way of life. It’s a promise that has meant everything to area veterans, including David Francavilla, a Retired Colonel of the U.S. Army who works with the Department of Veterans Affairs. “Gate City Bank truly makes a positive impact that leaves a lasting legacy with veterans in its communities,” Francavilla says. “The Bank helps many veterans and their family members receive help with anonymity, confidentiality and a stigma-free environment.”

Tuesday, October 12 was a day filled with celebration of the past, excitement for the future, and recognition of many incredible community and Chamber members and volunteers. 2020-21 Board Chair Sandi Piatz kicked off the event by recognizing volunteers, celebrating major initiatives and milestones such as the diversion project, and reflecting on the previous year while focusing on grit and grace. Sandi also introduced the 2021-22 Board Chair, Shawn Dobberstein. Shawn shared his excitement for the upcoming year and expressed his gratitude for this new role. Shannon Full, president and CEO of The Chamber, delivered an inspiring message as she set the vision for the future of The Chamber and greater community. Emphasizing the importance of a disruptive mindset, courageous will, dynamic leadership, strategic partnership and critical collaboration; Shannon introduced The Chamber’s five cornerstones, which will be the guiding principles as we move forward with our work in years to come. The five cornerstones include business vitality, public policy & advocacy, talent & workforce, community enhancement, and organizational excellence. The Chamber’s initiatives, programming, events, and organizational evolution will be strongly connected to these cornerstones. The 2021 Legacy Leader recipient, Mark Nisbet, was also honored at the Annual Celebration. Mark has been dedicated to serving his community through volunteering with numerous boards of directors, involvement with local and state government, and advocating for important issues, such as workforce development. It was an honor to recognize Mark in front of a crowd of community changemakers, and thank him for all he has done. Senator John Hoeven, Governor Doug Burgum and Mayor Bernie Dardis also congratulated Mark on receiving the prestigious award.

Sasha Holmes, Director of Operations

Briefly share your company history, how you’ve grown throughout the years and what your business offers today. As a team we have grown from a virtually unknown title company in 2016, when we had one employee doing less than ten closings a month, to one of the top three title companies in our region! Our team has handled thousands of closings, of all kinds. No transaction is too large or small, and no client is more or less important than the other. From small residential closings to multimillion dollar commercial deals and everything in between we have the

experience to get the job done, fast, professionally, and right, every time. We strive every day to provide the best possible service to our clients, we work quickly, professionally and we always remember that how each and every closing goes is how we will be seen in our community. When we do an amazing job every time, that allows us to continue to grow quickly through word of mouth, which in turn allows us to do what we love most: give back to our community by volunteering monthly, donations and drives.

How many employees do you have? Regency has eight employees and we are an all-female team.

What do you believe sets you apart? We are fast, efficient, and diligent. Our foundation is built on integrity and our goal is to continue to grow so we can have even more of an impact through our community outreach, donations and drives. We know that it isn’t about us, it is about how our clients feel throughout the closing process and beyond. Closing day is their big day,

How has The Chamber been a part of your story? Without connections, it’s difficult to grow and gain the exposure needed for growth and opportunity. When you’re doing good things and running a solid business, the Chamber allows us to share our story, support our advocacy and mission of giving back, and provide great training opportunities for personal and organizational growth. What’s most rewarding about your work? Being able to be there for people during huge transitions in their lives. Often when people are buying or selling a home it is typically because they are hitting a large milestone in their lives; getting married, starting a family, growing their family and needing more room, someone is retiring and downsizing or wants to travel or live someplace new. All of these and the life changes that are less happy, need someone behind the scenes working for you so you don’t have to worry about the details that you shouldn’t have to worry about. That is where we come in. When you are at the finish line and signing the closing documents, we

and that is what we love to do. It’s so much more than transferring ownership and signing papers.

What do you like best about doing business in FMWF? Our favorite thing about doing business in FMWF is being able to grow and make a difference in our local community, where what we do feels like we can and do make a real difference in people’s lives. The business community in FMWF is like a family. We care about each other, and we care about our community. We are focused not on our competition, but on what we are doing to make an impact. We feel that our loyal clients bring us business because they love supporting others as much as we do.

What do you like best about doing business in FMWF?

Dennis Krull, Owner

Briefly share your company history, how you’ve grown throughout the years and what your business offers today. For the first 18 years of my career, I was a graphic designer in various positions in the advertising world. Although I freelanced on and off most of those years in addition to a fulltime job, I never felt that I could break out on my own. It was not until 2009 when the company I worked for laid off me and 49 other people, that I got the push I needed

to go out on my own. I started by working out of our living room and rediscovering photography as well as developing my fine art skills. By 2010, I had my first fine art solo show and joined Gallery 4, Ltd., the longest continuous running Coop Art Gallery in the United States. By 2011, we were ready for our first studio outside the home and our very first Chamber Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. It was during these first few years that businesses like the United Way of Cass-Clay really took a chance on me and gave me my start.

How many employees do you have? Myself and my wife, Jeannie, who does our accounting, writing, and some of the creative work, including Calligraphy, when she has time away from her professional career.

What do you offer our community? What do you believe sets you apart? The very diverse nature of the services that we offer with graphic design, photography, illustration, and fine art services makes us very unique. We can help businesses and individuals in the community, locally and nationwide, get just what they need. Whether it is a gift for the family member or client; a logo or brochure; or photoshoot for a corporate event or a bunch of headshots, we offer it all.

How has The Chamber been a part of your story? Most recently, we were recognized as a ChamberChoice finalist for the “YP Best Place to Work” Award. This was a big honor for us as becoming the best place to work remains one of our top priorities. The recognition and exposure behind the awards and events have certainly helped highlight us in the community. Being involved with The Chamber really does help establish a strong sense of community. Meeting new

members at events, attending ribbon cutting ceremonies, connecting with Chamber staff members, and hosting tables at events like Business After Hours helps us feel more connected and part of a larger initiative in the Fargo-Moorhead area. I believe it’s important to have a strong local network that you can share ideas with and gain perspectives from regarding the challenges (and successes) that their businesses have experienced. The overall attitude we’ve experienced from Chamber members has been very positive and one of reciprocal interest. It’s rare that I meet someone at a Chamber event who isn’t equally as interested in finding a way to support our business as I am in finding a way to support theirs.

GOING BACK TO BASICS FOR BUSINESS CAPITAL Capital is a catalyst. It is a necessary ingredient for a business to launch, grow, make an acquisition, transfer ownership, or weather challenging times. Lenders play a crucial role in helping businesses achieve their goals – and there are lots of things businesses can do to make the process smoother and more effective. Whether amid economic uncertainty or in flush times, it’s always smart to start with the fundamentals of good credit: how to qualify for it, how to borrow it, and how to use it. Finding capital starts with a good partner who can guide you every step of the way.

Refresh your business plan so you can be open to opportunities The key idea here is to think about how your business would appear to an outside party. Are your books balanced? Do you have a good business plan? Are your goals realistic? Especially during the COVID-19 era, businesses should update their business plans and projections and keep their balance sheet clean. This can position you well to get capital if an opportunity comes up, and streamlines the process if you are ready to sell.

Focus on investments that pay long-term dividends Talk to your banker earlier rather than later It’s important to explore financing at the same time you are considering purchase agreements, ownership stakes, equipment investments, or other strategic discussions. What you are doing, how you finance it, and how you structure a deal can have a major impact on the bottom line because of tax impacts or loan terms.

Pay attention to the “5 C’s” lenders and investors look for Character, capacity, capital, collateral, and conditions are the things that indicate if your business is a strong candidate for credit – and they are also things you need to work on every day. Pay debt on time, don’t take on too much debt, keep a cash reserve, keep assets in good condition, and borrow intelligently for good reasons, and you’ll have a much easier time raising needed capital.

When rates are low, high-impact investments become more affordable. In manufacturing that might mean automation, or in other businesses it might mean upgrades to computer platforms, enterprise resource planning software, and other sophisticated tools to improve efficiency. Your banking advisor can help you judge if an investment is worth it.

Don’t be shy asking for help or advice Business capital is complex, and it’s not something most business owners need to deal with on a daily basis. It’s worth building a relationship with an advisor who knows banking and finance, the same way you do with legal experts and accountants so you can move quickly and correctly when opportunity arises. Whatever your need for capital may be, a business advisor at Alerus is ready to help you. We have a long history of helping businesses through all stages of development and all kinds of transformations, and our professionals will get to know you and your goals so they can recommend and help execute the best financial solution. Reach out today and learn how we can help your business.

Education is a two-way street when it comes to the right lens selection for a client and this is something that definitely sets us apart.

Why do you think it is important that our community have a Chamber with many initiatives and areas of work, and powered by so many various types of businesses, industries and professionals? The Chamber offers a central hub for all entrepreneurs, organizations, and businesses of all sizes to interact. Whether it is networking opportunities, chances for continuing education and professional growth or acting as a concerted voice on behalf of all local business, the Chamber is a vital institution in any business-minded community.

Bringing the Community Together

The Future

The pub, short for public house, has always served an important role in communities. It’s a special place to catch up with friends, meet your neighbors, share news, and have genuine conversations. We strive to bring this out in a number of different ways; we’ve designed the space to be easy to move around in, there are no TVs on the walls, and our events aim to draw folks together over common interests, which include music, comedy, and games. We feel like an example of a huge success story for our mission is looking at the Fargo comedy community. Before opening The Cellar, our basement event space with a focus on stand-up, the comedy scene was scattered. Now, with Front Street and The Cellar acting as a home, there is a cohesive group of talented and diverse individuals, who now have a network of friends and a backbone of support in their craft, and we are very proud and grateful to be able to be a part of it.

Hopefully, by continuing to offer a premium selection, premium service, and a premium aesthetic, we are able to make a positive and lasting impression on our community, and become a permanent fixture in this exceptional city.

Briefly share your company history, how you’ve grown throughout the years and what your business offers today. Grateful Cratefulls was founded in 2018 with a clear mission: to help you “be there” for all of life’s moments through unique, thoughtful gifting services. What started as a 500 square foot brick and mortar storefront that doubled as an office and “warehouse” space has grown to a 1600 square foot storefront and warehouse with offerings now including brick and mortar, a super convenient and easy to use e-commerce platform and custom business gifting services.

How many employees do you have? We have four full-time employees, two part-time employees, and five to 10 seasonal helpers!

What values are most important to your business? Compassion is number one on our list of Core Values. We truly care about every gifting experience that we have the pleasure of being a part of. Gifting is special – whether it’s a loved one, a co-worker or a client. Our goal as a business is to take any stresses that can go along with gifting off of your shoulders. At the end of the day, it is about making someone’s day a little bit brighter, and we’re beyond thrilled to help you do that.

How has The Chamber been a part of your story? One of the first (and smartest) things we did as a new small business was join The Chamber. We’ve built and grown our Business by creating real, authentic relationships. Events like Business After Hours and

Women Connect have provided opportunities that have allowed us to engage with, learn from and get to know so many outstanding business leaders in our community. We are so fortunate to have one of the largest chambers in the Midwest right here in FMWF. Not only is The Chamber an advocate for economic growth through collaboration, education and community, they are a leader in forecasting the needs of our local businesses and bringing new initiatives like Ignite FMWF to us to help bridge the gap between talent and employers.

What’s a surprising or fun fact about your company? We are a Certified North Dakota Woman-Owned Business! We are also Family Owned; Dani Gilseth (daughter/niece), Dori Walter (mom/sister) and Aimee Hanson (aunt/sister).

How many employees do you have? The Rape and Abuse Crisis Center hovers around 40 employees.

How has The Chamber been a part of your story?

Sami Harwood, Development Director

Briefly share your company history, how you’ve grown throughout the years and what your business offers today: Rape and Abuse Crisis Center (RACC) has been serving the FargoMoorhead community since 1977. RACC has grown and evolved with our metro and now serves four counties and nearly 2,500 child and adult victims / survivors every year. With the growth comes the addition of free and confidential services including counseling, public education and soon the Rainbow Bridge Parenting Time Center.

As a nonprofit, Rape and Abuse Crisis Center sees tremendous value in being a part of the FMWF Chamber. Nothing allows you to share your mission better than connecting with other local businesses who believe in safer communities and the wellness of families beyond the workday. Whether it is presenting at local businesses, giving the human resources team information packets to share with employees or collaborating on fun internal fundraisers, we love the chance The Chamber gives us to keep these connections going.

How else is your business involved in the community? RACC is heavily imbedded behind the scenes in our community’s formal systems. We are in the public schools offering education and counseling, we are the ones who are called to emergency rooms and we collaborate with our local police departments. We are also visiting the shelters and various other outreach locations where our services are needed.

What do you like best about doing business in FMWF? This community cares. We are so appreciative of those who reach out to learn more, sponsor our events, host fundraisers or support us by volunteering. This business community always shows up to let our clients know a safer future is possible.

We continue to see the job market shifting, with a surplus of available roles, yet a deficiency in the workforce. This means we need to learn to take better care of the employees we have. How do you keep your employees not only engaged, but also loving their job? You should focus on getting your employees to a level of satisfaction where they ignore that recruiting call and their mind doesn’t wander to thoughts of a shiny, new job. In our time together we’ll learn the three keys to keep employees engaged as well as the tools your leaders need to successfully carry out these keys.

Maximizing Greatness: Using Psychological Safety to Drive Team Performance

It’s no secret that our region has recently seen a lot of success! With the diversion being fully funded, career academies well on their way in both Cass and Clay counties, and the metro gaining national recognition, many are wondering what’s next. The Fargo Moorhead West Fargo metro must continue to grow, evolve and innovate. Hear from past Chamber Legacy Leaders as they look toward the future and share their excitement for what’s to come. Wednesday, December 8 | 11:30 to 1 p.m. Courtyard by Marriott Moorhead and Livestream Mike Meagher

Psychological safety might sound a Sagency bit fluffy, but it isn’t about putting bubble wrap around people or lowering expectations. It’s quite the opposite. Psychological safety is about creating a space where people speak up, take intelligent risks, and focus their energy on what drives success. Participants will learn the 4 Domains of Psychological Safety and how teams can leverage Psychological Safety to: make great decisions, create healthy group dynamics, stimulate intelligent risk taking and innovation, foster inclusion and equity, ensure effective execution, and retain and engage key talent.

The Red River Valley Water Supply Project is the region’s emergency water supply for over 50% of North Dakotans. A 1930s style drought would cause an extreme water shortage, leading to an estimated $32 billion impact over 10 years. The Diversion is the permanent flood protection solution our community needs, protecting more than 235,000 people from catastrophic flooding. This project will protect North Dakota’s economic epicenter and preserve $5.4 billion in wages and more than $3.5 billion in taxable sales. Visit fmwfchamber.com for the latest updates.

We

are excited to bring the community a new publication of our public policy and advocacy work – a Legislative Review. This resource provides an overview of the key business legislation that The Chamber advocated for during the 2021 legislative sessions in both Minnesota and North Dakota, as well as how our local Cass and Clay County legislators voted on the legislation. As we more publicly hold our elected officials accountable for their votes through this resource, we also intend for it to serve as public appreciations for those who were aligned on so many critical business issues.
